I think the thing that I've taken away from this panel is that it's okay if you don't like your work because there are people who will love it.

And I didn't take that away because there was any implication that Hugh or Mads disliked the work they did on Hannibal but because they so obviously loved it but even they couldn't remember all the details of the things they loved. Hugh wouldn't stop talking about S1EP2 Amuse-Bouche but he could not for the life of him remember Eldon Stammets' name, and Mads and Hugh had to be reminded of Donald Sutcliffe's name.

And those details of the panel stood out to me because it's like wow I may forget about something I've written or recorded or drawn, but someone somewhere out there, even if it's just one person, probably loved what I made even more than I did and they might've committed parts of my work to memory that I've completely forgotten about or thought were insignificant.

I guess the panel just reminded me how thankful I am for fandom spaces and the fannibal community and just generally people who are kind and uplifting and share what they love with each other.

Fatal character flaws

Aristotle calls this ‘Hamartia’ - a tragic flaw or error. It can be anything happening to good or bad characters, even otherwise good character traits and with good intentions that ultimately lead to the character’s demise. They are often traits that don’t neccessarily lead to someone’s downfall, but can if they’re done to an extreme. So think of these otherwise normal ‘flaws’ as extremes.

ignorance - not seeking helpful knowledge

selfishness - not thinking about others

curiosity - getting involved in things they shouldn’t get involved in

impetuousness - being too passionate/ not thinking before acting

pride - not giving in/ not taking help from others 

hubris - exaggerated opinion of oneself/ thinking nothing can get to them

lack of self-control - can’t help/stop themself

indecisiveness* - not being able to make decisions

confirmation bias - only taking in information that supports one’s own belief 

arrogance -  thinking they are superior

*Interesting example: Chidi from The Good Place. A morally great character who is so extreme in always trying to make the right choice and therefore not being able to make a decision until it is proven to be right, it basically lands him in hell.

Hi there!

🦋what are you most insecure about when you post a fic?

Everything!

I really do worry about everything. I think my prose is stilted and awkward. I worry I worked too hard wording things just so, and probably went overboard constructing things in a way that pleased me.

I worry people won't jive with my characterizations (which is a big thing to me, I really care about characterization!) I worry things are too raw, too rough, for people. That people won't like the angst, or the sharp edges. I worry there's too much show and not enough tell; or too much tell and not enough show.

I feel envious of people who write very pretty works and very popular works. And I know I couldn't write that way. I wouldn't be able to even try, because it wouldn't be true to me, but it still feels weird all the same. Like my work is this ugly, gangly, strange creature in a crowd of masterpieces.

I dunno, there's a lot I'm insecure about and a lot I worry about, but I post anyway, which is a minor miracle! (This is probably too honest for the internet but here we are!)

🌿how does creating make you feel?

Fulfilled.

Sometimes it's fun. Sometimes it's joyous. Sometimes it feels good. But it doesn't always. Even at its worst; at it's most uncomfortable and painful, it's fulfilling. It's like my soul needs me to create, regardless of the cost. As if it's who I am, and I wouldn't be me without it. Even if it's not writing, as long as I'm creating something, I feel...right, I guess.

Hello hello! Thanks for the ask, these are fun!

🌈is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?

Hmm! I want to say Contempt since that is THE fic I fought with, but I've not shut up about it so I'm sure everyone knows LOL.

I think maybe Collateral Damage. The original draft, I got 10k into before I scrapped the whole thing and started over. It was a tone issue; the original was more dark and dreary than I wanted. I had to open it with smut of all things to get myself on track! Then there's the fact that it was a POV and a ship I don't write often, so I was a bit out of my comfort zone. And I was trying to pull off that plot twist the whole time and trying to set the stage for that...

A Matter of Time is up there also, since I was trying something new. Not only POV switching, but reverse chronology! Oh and trying to nail that ending, too...For such a short fic, it was a massive undertaking.

🎀give yourself a compliment about your own writing

Oh golly...I'm always so hard on myself, especially with my writing. But I'll say I'm proud of how brave I am. Even when certain topics or styles are scary or different, I still give my all to the stories I want to tell. No matter how dark or problematic or ruthless they are! And I've played around with my writing a lot, trying different things, and I'm pretty proud of that, too. And I'm certainly not short on PASSION!

🍭why did you start writing?

Because the world needed more Snarry!

And I needed more problematic Snarry. (No one ask me what my first fic actually was.)

Truthfully it was just a great love of stories and of snarry and their individual characters. I inhaled fics like crazy and I still needed more!

But that's with fic specifically...even before that I'd written some. I had a "super spy" story I was writing called Veronica and Klyde. I think I always just loved reading so much, and I think my love of reading turned into a love of writing. But since I'm pretty sure I started writing in general at age, like, 8, I really can't remember that much.
