Reading List: Spirituality, Globalisation, Parenting and the 0.99 Cent Pricing Bias
What I’ve read (🖤) and planning to read (🤍)
Books
• Fall of human intellect - A Parvasarthy (genre: spirituality, humanness) 🖤
Academic Papers
The backlash against globalisation - Stefanie Walter (from annual review) 🤍
In recent years, the world has seen a rising backlash against globalization. This article reviews the nature, causes, and consequences of the globalization backlash. It shows that, contrary to a popular narrative, the backlash is not associated with a large swing in public opinion against globalization but is rather a result of its politicization. The increasing influence of globalization- skeptic actors has resulted in more protectionist, isolationist, and nationalist policies, some of which fundamentally threaten pillars of the contemporary international order. Both material and nonmaterial causes drive the glob- alization backlash, and these causes interact and mediate each other. The consequences are shaped by the responses of societal actors, national gov- ernments, and international policy makers. These responses can either yield to and reinforce the global backlash or push back against it. Understanding these dynamics will be an important task for future research.
The causes and consequences of urban riot and unrest - Tim Newburn (from annual review) 🤍
This review explores those varied bodies of work that have sought to un- derstand crowd behavior and violent crowd conduct in particular. Although the study of such collective conduct was once considered central to social science, this has long ceased to be the case and in many respects the study of protest and riot now receives relatively little attention, especially within criminology. In addition to offering a critical overview of work in this field, this review argues in favor of an expanded conception of its subject matter. In recent times, scholarly concern has increasingly been focused on ques- tions of etiology, i.e., asking how and why events such as riots occur, with the consequence that less attention is paid to other, arguably equally impor- tant questions, including how riots spread, how they end, and, critically, what happens in their aftermath. Accordingly, as a corrective, the review proposes a life cycle model of riots.
Parenting and it’s effects on children : reading and misreading behaviour genetics (from annual review) 🖤
There is clear evidence that parents can and do influence children. There is equally clear evidence that children’s genetic makeup affects their own behavioral characteristics, and also influences the way they are treated by their parents. Twin and adoption studies provide a sound basis for estimating the strength of genetic effects, although heritability estimates for a given trait vary widely across samples, and no one estimate can be considered definitive. This chapter argues that knowing only the strength of genetic factors, however, is not a sufficient basis for estimating environmental ones and indeed, that attempts to do so can systematically underestimate parenting effects. Children’s genetic predispositions and their parents’ childrearing regimes are seen to be closely interwoven, and the ways in which they function jointly to affect children’s development are explored.
More than a penny’s worth: left-digit bias and firm pricing- Avner Strulov-Shlain (from MorningBrew) 🤍
A penny saved. What’s the difference between $2.99 and $3.00? Basic math says one cent, but you probably perceive the difference to be about 22 cents, a new paper by a University of Chicago business school professor estimated. The research explores left digit bias—the phenomenon where consumers’ perceptions are overly influenced by the leftmost number in the price—and it brought receipts, analyzing retail scanner data on 3,500 products sold by 25 US chains. And while it might seem like every price you see ends in .99, the paper argues that retailers are leaving money on the table by underestimating this bias when setting prices.

The Yoga of Happiness and Bliss - Light On Ananda Yoga - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast
Tumblr media
Sant Kirpal Singh: "There lived in India Swami Shiv Brat Lal, a disciple of Rai Saligram [successor of Swami Ji Maharaj], who was advanced in spirituality but he gave out all these things about which I am now referring, in story form. He would bring out these very teachings of the Master in some novel like form in the Urdu language, of course, not in English. He did a splendid work, having brought out two, three thousand books, I think. Somewhere he takes the soul as a prince so that he may bring out a story with all these teachings given here. He did a very wonderful work. He has now passed away. He loved me much. I loved him too. He loved Master too [Hazur Baba Sawan Singh]. In all love, you see, he wrote many stories like that. Novels -- very interesting -- in which all these teachings of the Saints were included -- given out. That will draw many people to the Truth." (The Light of Kirpal, Sant Bani Books)
Today, a Sant Mat Satsang Podcast featuring readings from a rare Radhasoami (Radhaswami) spiritual classic, Light on Ananda Yoga - The Yoga of Happiness, by Baba Faqir Chand's spiritual master Shiv Brat Lal (also known as Sant Daata Dayal Ji). Light On Ananda Yoga, was published in English in 1982 by Sant Bani Ashram with some editing guidance from my good friend Steve Morrow. "Ananda" means bliss and happiness and is Shiv Bral Lal's description of Surat Shabd Yoga: the bhakti (love) of inner Light and Sound Meditation, the spiritual practice (sadhana) of Sant Mat, also known as the Radhaswami Faith.

PRAYER
O August Radhaswami (Lord of the Soul),
Thou Living Self and Living Master,
Beneficent Father and Mother of All!
Be merciful – make us Thine own,
And thus save us from the snares of Time.
Past are the Golden Age and others,
Unknowing of the Heavenly Melody proper,
Yet now art Thou Merciful, in this hard Dark Age,
To chant in loud and lucid strains, the Sacred Word,
O Lord, having descended into this plane below,
Helpest Thou the living entities,
To span the Worldly-Ocean across;
To cast off the Trinity, and reach the Fourth Abode,
Whence the Living Name unfolds,
And the Living Mastership.
Bathed in Glory and Effulgent Light,
Thy servant tenders this Solemn Petition:
Grant us even The Regionless Region,
The Chief Abode, the Sphere of Bliss,
The Holy Refuge at Thy Feet,
MY LORD!
– A Prayer of Sant Daata Dayal Ji (Shiv Brat Lal) of the Radhasoami Faith
In Divine Love (Bhakti), Light, and Sound, At the Feet of the Masters, Radhasoami,

When stress & the world become ons so overwhelming… go with the flow… Tao te Ching teaches how to develop personal power through living in alignment with the Tao, or ‘going with the flow’, being in harmony with Nature…
I listed to this and I didn’t understand much but go with the flow stayed with me, and even if I didn’t get, I internalized that… then imagine reading it again!

I have recently started reading "The Spell of the Sensuous" by David Abram and 16 pages in I have highlighted almost everything. He speaks so highly, so beautifully, of the earth, of magic, and indigenous cultures...and I've begun to see little pricks of light I often associate with spirits flashing in my vision as I read.
I hope the book continues on this way. I feel like there is a wealth of Knowledge within it.

Quote
16. Read good books, a little at a time. (Don’t gobble them up. Don’t read through it to say “I’ve read it.” Slowly read books. Sometimes, read the same book two or three times over again—trying to put into practice what it says.)

Baba Jaimal Singh On Daily Spiritual Practice - Also: Often Used Mystic Terms of the Masters
Tumblr media
"Particularly, just before going to sleep, see that there is no worldly desire or any kind of desire in the mind. Then repeat the Names. Then repeat the word 'Radhasoami'."
Baba Jaimal Singh: "Now I write to you a little about 'Parmarth': When you are free from your work and have leisure, develop that condition of the mind which enjoys 'sushupti' (deep sleep). Particularly, just before going to sleep, see that there is no worldly desire or any kind of desire in the mind. Then repeat the Names. Then repeat the word 'Radhasoami'. Go on putting 'surat' and 'nirat' in the Dhun and listen to the Sound with love and devotion of the 'nij man', and with an intense longing. And you will feel the bliss of the Dhun or the Sound. You may not be able to keep the attention there for long, but you will enjoy the bliss. Practise this every day, whenever you have time or leisure.
"You should not indulge in those actions which are fruitless -- whether they are of the world or of 'Parmarth'. Your spare time should not be wasted because you are allowed a fixed span of time. You take twenty-four thousand breaths every day. They should be utilized either in the performance of your worldly duties or in 'Parmarth', and the mind should be kept under control -- within the bounds of the Satguru's instructions. Then all worldly and spiritual work will go on very nicely and automatically.
"You should do your Bhajan and Simran  every day." (Baba Jaimal Singh, # 118 and 119)

A day on which I reflect on my shortcomings as a parent.
Hello, dear reader. Today was a difficult day. I wish I could say that every day is a good day. I know that, when most people ask how I am doing, they don't want to know how I'm actually feeling.
I can say it was a productive day, even if it wasn't an enjoyable experience. I started on my schoolwork for English Composition 1, a few days ahead of schedule. My key to success, other than diligence, has been doing things ahead of time. The floors were picked up and swept, the clothes folded, and I patched my jumper and a unicorn-puke-colored dolphin that my daughter received on her last vacation with her papa. I also finished up the next weekly spread for my bullet journal.
The negative side of the day is on behalf of the children, unfortunately. I know that, when I had the kiddos, I signed up for whatever difficulties will arise. This isn't another parent griping session, I promise. My kids are both sweet, imaginative souls. Today just wasn't their day. I found myself hollering a lot more than I would like. I'm not so much upset at them as much as I am upset with myself for how I handled it all. The whole thing set me off for the rest of the evening until I just ended up crying silently in my chair. I choose how I react to things in my daily life. I know that an adult must respond, not react, but I ended up reacting anyway.
There is a book at church about the beautiful mess of childhood and parenting, and I may borrow it. All the books I've ever picked up there have been fantastic. There was one about personal growth, and how our biggest changes happen in the darkness. It's called, Learning to Walk in the Dark, by Barbara Brown Taylor. There is an LGBTQIA+ devotional that is beautifully written. I picked it up on Pride Sunday, along with a book called Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Walk into a Bar? by Brian D McLaren. I haven't gotten that far into the last one, but it has been rather lovely so far.
I hope you'll pardon me. I don't much like talking about religion as it is a sensitive subject. Honestly, talking about it in the last paragraph makes me feel like some cringy Bible-thumper, even if I know that isn't the case. Please know that, no matter your religion-or absence of religion- my page will always be a safe place for you, reader.
As always, thank you for reading. I hope your evening is a beautiful one!
Love,
Natay
