i actually got this prompt a few times!! so behold a tiny extra for the asmr/roommates au that hasn't even been written yet lmfao

"Okay that's it, you're officially banned from being in any of my future videos."

Zuko cracks open his right eye at the statement, observes just for a moment the cranky look on Sokka's face before glancing down to the pestering hand on his hip, then shuts it.

And promptly turns over to face the wall.

"I was napping, Sokka," he grumbles. It was a really nice one too, with him prefectly warm and comfortable against Sokka's pillows after being lulled to sleep by the soothing sounds of his boyfriend's recorded voice in the background.

"You fell asleep in the same room that I'm doing my editing, not my fault," Sokka instantly shoots back, the usual response to a usual complaint, then says, "but that's besides the point. You have completely messed up my metrics!"

Zuko sighs from underneath the blankets. "I have no idea what that means."

"The key performance measures," Sokka clarifies, and when there's not even a twitch of a muscle from the bed he gives a loud huff. "You're too hot and it's ruined all the hard work I've done to curate my intended audience."

That finally gets Zuko to twist back around to stare at Sokka in open confusion. "What?"

"Don't what me," Sokka complains, before leaning his chair back so he can gesture at his computer screen. Zuko doesn't even try to pretend to look at the various graphs. "The numbers are all screwed up! I've never seen the bars for these age ranges so high before!"

Zuko's face scrunches in disbelief. "So you're mad that older people are watching your videos?"

"No, I'm mad that older women won't stop only commenting on all the videos you're in. It's skewing everything! Now the front page of my channel only highlights my videos with you, which—" Sokka cuts a quick, slightly chagrined glance at Zuko after realizing his poor choice of words— "isn't a bad thing, I love seeing your pretty face, but—"

"Hold on," Zuko interrupts. He's not a content creator or much of a numbers guy; whenever Sokka starts talking about the channel or video analytics, he generally tends to zone out.

Except for one time, when Sokka had mentioned off-handedly about how his data includes not only a ranking of his top videos, but also a breakdown on which parts of them are watched the most.

"Who's the one with shirtless videos on his channel?"

Sokka stills. "There's only one—"

"Sure, and who's shirtless video broke over a million views in two weeks and before even having a million followers?" Zuko asks, and Sokka flushes. "Uh huh, that's what I thought. If I checked my phone right now would I still see that video as the very first one to pop up?"

"That doesn't—you liked that video too, don't try to play me."

"Yeah, I did. A lot." With an indulgent smirk, Zuko burrows back under his boyfriend's blanket. Sokka has the high-level data to generally know what section of that video is most replayed, but only he knows just how many times he's rewatched minutes 25:08:36 to 32:49:12.

"Just like everyone else. But you don't see me complaining about the fact that the entire world thinks you're hot, do you?"

Came across a post that claimed for Zutara "a romantic relationship would undermine Zuko’s redemption arc & undermine the found family aspect of Zutara's friendship" & I'm so annoyed now. So, becoming romantically involved w someone means your redemption arc is no longer valid? & what exactly is wrong with becoming friends w someone, choosing them as your family & then falling in love w them? If anything, K@taang undermines the found family aspect of K@taang's friendship.

People who claim that romance undermines found family relationships must have a very odd view of like, families in general......like are two people who are in love and have kids w each other not each other’s family now???? It’s just really bizarre to me lmfao like, familial relationships aren’t inherently platonic bc I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t be able to genuinely fall in love with someone I didn’t consider to be family, or close to it!

Anyway, this idea that found families must Stay Platonic otherwise their bonds are being undermined is just so fucking boring. Like, you know what the absolute best found family dynamic in television in the early 2010s was? Leverage. And guess what! Nate and Sophie fell in love and John Rogers himself said that the ot3 was made canon in the finale, a poly relationship that comprises the other three of the family. That doesn’t make them any less a found family, though???? Like, they chose each other. They found each other and then they chose each other and they kept choosing each other, and that isn’t somehow Less just because romantic love became involved in some of their relationships.

Found family is all about choosing the people you love. Choosing the people you want in your life, choosing the people you want to be around. Romantic love can be part of that, and often is! Zuko and Katara falling in love doesn’t undermine the found family of the gaang any more than Suki being part of it because she’s Sokka’s girlfriend does--because that may be where her connection to the gaang began, but not where it ended. (Or, rather, didn’t have to be where it ended--one of my gripes with the show is how little Suki is given to do with the rest of the gaang, especially Katara. They should have had a friendship on screen and I’m a little annoyed they didn’t.)

And as far as it undermining Zuko’s redemption goes, that’s actually really funny when you consider that Katara and Aang getting together in the finale actually did undermine Aang’s character arc--in a way that Zutara getting together wouldn’t have for Zuko, because his redemption itself didn’t actually hinge on his relationship with Katara. (His redemption was complete before he joined the gaang at the Western Air Temple--those life changing fieldtrips were about Zuko earning forgiveness for the things he’d done before he made the choice to do and be better, but he still would have been redeemed even if the others hadn’t chosen to forgive him.) On the other hand, Aang’s growth--and, indeed, his ability to become a fully realized avatar--explicitly hinged on his attachment to Katara. This is made explicit in the book 2 finale, where Aang is forced to make a show of ‘letting go’ of Katara in order to unblock his final chakra and enter the avatar state--and then it is promptly thrown out in book 3, where he’s allowed to double down on his possessive attachment and unlock the avatar state and defeat the firelord and get the girl at the end of it all.

Aang needed to let go of his selfish attachment to Katara--not actually his love for her, but, for example, the expectation that his romantic love needed to be returned, which is a huge part of the problem with his actions and overall arc in book 3--in order to achieve enlightenment master the avatar state, but this is completely undermined when, later on, he is... selfishly attached to Katara and practically demands she return his feelings, and then gets the avatar state back anyway, and is able to master it in order to defeat the firelord nonlethally. Aang getting absolutely everything he wanted just handed to him on a silver platter in the eleventh hour, without having to sacrifice a single thing--not even his selfish entitlement to another person’s feelings--is the definition of undermining a character arc tbh.

Meanwhile, two characters falling in love after helping each other complete their respective arcs--Zuko helped Katara finally achieve closure for her trauma and begin to heal, and Katara helped Zuko accept himself and gain the courage to face his uncle and beg forgiveness (forgiveness he never really needed, because as Iroh says, he was never angry--he was sad that his beloved nephew had lost his way, and this is something I think Katara understood even without knowing exactly what had happened between them)--would be building on and enhancing their journeys, rather than undermining them.

So yeah, I just.... do not understand that argument (except insofar as it comes from ppl with a vested interest in delegitimizing zutara, usually because they’re mad that it’s more popular or has more support than their preferred ship), because it completely misses the point of not only found family, but redemption arcs--Zuko’s in particular. (And I don’t even have an issue with redemption via romantic love--as with anything, it depends on how it’s handled--but Zuko’s very clearly wasn’t, and the fact that he was redeemed before seeking out Katara’s forgiveness means that if she did fall in love with him post-canon, it wouldn’t be undermining anything at all.)

this is definitely my favorite avatar blog, thank you guys for taking the time to share these Facts with us. yue’s story in the modern au was heartbreaking, but i was wondering if you had any headcanons about modern yue before the tragic accident?

yue is lowkey a mad scientist. sokka always has to remind her that they do not have the proper safety measures to “do the thing,” lest she get “blowed up.” and vice versa. they are equal parts figures of responsibility for the other, and also their worst enablers.

yue is an excellent poet. she actually gets published in some junior literary magazines. she wants to be a biochemical engineer, but she’s also a total lit nerd.

when yue was little, she invited one of her friends over to her house, and this friend, being a child, happened to spill some sauce on yue’s mom’s favorite tablecloth. ever since the Tablecloth Incident, yue was not allowed to bring friends over unless they were vetted first. immediate disqualifiers included: anything below a 4.0 gpa, “perpetual sticky hands” vibes, is white. ever since yue got her diagnosis, yue’s parents kind of treated her like that tablecloth.

yue’s dad loves sokka. when sokka goes off to college and thinks he has been spared of having to talk to either of yue’s parents ever again, he is distressed to find that arnook is still forwarding him emails he has to pretend to read. because he’s still “part of the family.” only, sokka does not want to be “part of the family.” for a plethora of reasons.

yue complains a lot that it would probably be helpful if she had a wheelchair, but when sokka is like “ok then we should get (build??) you a wheelchair” yue is like “nah” bc she knows it’s easier to just pretend she’s not in pain all the time than have her parents look at her with guilt and pity in their eyes, and have people pass her by pretending not to look at her at all.

people are always wondering how sokka has diligent notes taken for every class when they never actually see him taking notes. it’s a habit he picked up when he would go over what happened in class with yue on days where she couldn’t make it to school. he never dropped the habit, and now he has said notes on hand for whomever happens to need them.

every time yue shows up at school with a raging fever, sokka is just like “nope” and stares her down until she has to concede, and then he walks her home. he misses first period a lot due to the fact that his girlfriend is a “dumb, stubborn, overachieving nerd.”

whenever katara hangs out with them, she’s just like “are you aware that you are too pretty for my brother? do you know this? blink twice if he’s holding you hostage.” and yue just giggles. but katara knows something is wrong. she is so pretty. what the hell.

yue and sokka are both those people who are lowkey friends with everyone, but also, they are really only friends with each other. whenever yue suggests that they try to make new friends sokka is like “but have you met other people?? other people are terrible.” and she can’t exactly disagree because, well, she has.

yue never does actually make it to sixteen, but in the weeks leading up to her birthday, people keep asking her if she’s excited to be able to drive. she just gestures vaguely up and down the length of her body and is like “you think this is able to drive??? lmfao”

people are generally just asking her insensitive questions though. sokka makes her a shirt for her birthday that says “I HAVE A CHRONIC ILLNESS YOU STUPID FUCKING PRICK” she loves it, but she is far too much of a goody-two-shoes to ever actually wear it other than as pajamas.

yue sits next to zuko one year in english class. whenever one of the other students says something absolutely ludicrous (which is. often unfortunately) they just exchange a look. they are both too shy to actually talk to each other outside of class, which is unfortunate because they would have made for the best of friends. by the time sokka befriends zuko, it is already too late.

yue is not nearly aware of how beautiful and lovely she is, so she’ll often joke about how she’s an outcast and a loser by saying things like “i am definitely the coolest kid in this school. after all, i’ve done more drugs than everyone else here combined.”

whenever sokka has a cold, he knows that he cannot afford to infect yue, but he also knows that he needs to go to school so he tries to convince her that it’s a snow day. yue knows exactly what he is doing but she’ll just play along and be like “ah yes. a snow day. in the middle of summer. of course. guess i’ll just stay home then.” and then he carries a printed copy of his notes in a plastic folder while wearing sterilized gloves all the way to her house and drops them off with her parents and then briskly walks back home.

yue spends a lot of time just lying in bed reading, and she reads a lot of science books, so she has all sorts of deep pockets of esoteric knowledge that she just rattles off whenever it’s relevant in conversation. most people think she is a freak when she does this, but the first time she ever talks to sokka as kids, he is just like “wow okay wanna be best friends” and she’s like “yeah!!!!” and then they are, and that’s just that.

me being indulgent on main

aang

aang is a music education major for sure. he plays saxophone, and considering how good he is at everything the conductor has him switching between alto/tenor/bari like every other piece.

he’s also really REALLY good at instrumental tech classes (aka classes where you learn how to play/teach instruments)

katara

katara is also a music education major who plays piano! everyone is asking why the hell she’s not doing performance because she THROWS DOWN but like

she genuinely has a passion for teaching kids yknow? like she luvs those moments where a kid just Gets It™

sokka

sokka is a jazz upright bass major lmfao. that’s the vibe.

he ALWAYS drags the gaang to jams and they’re ALWAYS like “are you gonna play???” and he never does

not saying he doesn’t play at jams but he definitely Does Not Want Them Watching Him™

he’s not ~naturally gifted~ like katara and aang so he feels kinda weird abt it? and also he’s a bassist so he gets passed up on the reg lmao

toph

TOPH IS A VOCAL PERFORMANCE MAJOR

she’s a coloratura soprano with a craaaazy range and also perfect pitch

and unlike almost every vocalist in existence, she has hella rhythm

cello performance major!

him and azula were raised to be top violinists but he just...didn’t like violin.

(i am not a string major in the slightest so idk how it works but from what i can tell violin is HARD and you gotta kinda have a Knack™ for it)

iroh (who plays cello) definitely took him under his wing and taught him how to play cello

ozai was like “stupid. bad” but he also knows shit-all about music so iroh was like “this helps with violin” but SIKE

suki

i genuinely think she would be a percussion performance major

first i bang the drum and then i bang ur mum

she like. regularly outperforms everyone in her studio but cis male percussionists are actually terrible and consistently nitpick her

Ya know what was dumb was I was watching The Last Airbender and there was an episode with so! Much! Whump! Potential. But it fell so flat and I was mad. (basically Korra and Sokka were both sick but they were only in the episode for about two minutes and I was so mad)

Lmfao, I’ve watched that one episode like 5 times. Coulda been more whump. I agree.

“You can’t be serious,” Tophfrowned towards Sokka. “How are you planning on leading troops with that kind of skill?” He mirrored herfrown as she scoffed at him. Even though it had been six years since Aang haddefeated the Fire Lord, she was as tireless in her training as ever, insistingon strengthening the forces of each kingdom—just in case. While she usuallyfocused on beating Aang into the ground—literally—todaySokka was her victim.

“I’ve made it this far, haven’t I?”He snapped, crossing his arms.

“Barely,” he heard her murmur, onlymaking him more irritated.

“What’s your problem?” He lurchedforwards with his practice sword, aiming for her legs to knock her off herfeet. Even with the surprise attack, she was faster, moving out of his path andhitting him hard in the back as he stumbled by, effectively sending him to theground.

“My problem is that we’ve beentraining for nearly three hours and you haven’t landed a single blow yet,” shesaid. With a flick of her wrist, the earth below him moved, forcing him uprightbefore sinking back down.

“Because you’re being especiallydifficult today.”

“Maybe the vacation you took lastweek just made you weaker.”

“My sister had a baby!” Heexclaimed. “Of course I took the week off! And it’s not like there are anyconflicts happening right now. And I doubt there are going to be any anytimesoon—”

Another wrist flick. This time theearth opened up around him before slamming back together, trapping him inside adark dome.

“Hey!” He shouted, pounding on theside of the dirt prison. “Let me out of here! Toph, this isn’t funny!”

“Don’t be such a baby,” Toph yawnedfrom behind him. “I didn’t trap you in here alone.”

“I can’t see anything,” hecomplained.

There was a snort, and she slappedhim on the back. “Welcome to my life!”

Sighing, he turned in the directionof her voice. “So, what’s the point of this?”

“What if someone attacks in themiddle of the night? What if you get trapped inside a cave? What if someonelets off a smoke bomb or something else to effect vision during a fight? It’simportant to not solely rely on your eyes.”

“I feel like you just want to punchme again,” he grumbled.

“I wouldn’t have to trap you in thedark to do that,” she snickered. “Come on, I’m going to attack. Listen for mymovements, feel the ground around you. Now, try to block.”

Out of the silence came a fist,directly in his stomach. He heaved, staggering back several steps. “What was that?!”

“You have to listen to mymovements!”

He focused on the darkness, tryingto hear her coming closer. Nothing. Another punch, this time on the shoulder.He fell against the wall of the dome, swearing under his breath.

“Listen.”

“I am!”

“Not good enough!” A kick, bucklinghis knees and sending him to the ground.

This time, he heard her foot comeback to the ground, and reached for her, grabbing her ankle and tugging hard,sending her to the ground as well.

“How was that?” He smirked, thoughit disappeared when he heard her moving again, and felt a foot in his gut.

The dome disappeared as he wheezed,trying to catch his breath. “Ok, that was a bit unnecessary.”

“If you can’t even manage thatmuch, then I’m not even going to bother. Let’s quit for today.”

His anger boiled over when sheturned and began walking away. Before thinking it through, he picked up apebble and threw it at her. She held up her hand, stopping it. She turned as itfell to the ground and frowned at him.

“What was that for?”

“I know you want us to be preparedin case anything happens, but that dome exercise was going a little too far. Idon’t know what I did to make you mad, but you need to stop being such a jerk.If you tell me what I did, I can—”

“Get stronger, that’s what you cando,” she snapped, turning from him again.

“Don’t just walk away!” He threwanother pebble. This time, she sent it back, hitting him on the forehead. “Thisisn’t about my training. You’re obviously taking something out on me, so whatis it?” He continued.

“I’m this hard on everyone.” Shecrossed her arms.

“No, you aren’t,” he seethed,closing the space between them with a few quick strides, “I watch your trainingsessions with Katara and Aang. You aren’t so impatient with them.”

“Maybe I just like them more,” sheshrugged.

He threw his hands up. “That! Thatis what I’m talking about! Just tell me what I did—”

“Just drop it, Sokka,” she frowned,attempting to turn away from him once again.

“I’m not going to drop it!” Hegrabbed her arm. “Tell—oof!” She grabbed his arm with her other hand, flippinghim to the ground.

“I told you to drop it.”

He hurried to his feet, grabbingher arm again. “No! I’m not dropping it until—”

In one swift movement, she turnedon her heel and punched him square in the jaw. “Just shut up! What do you wantto hear? That I think I’m in love with you and that scares the crap outta me?!Is that it?!”

He stared at her in shock, his handfalling away from his face as he just gaped at her. “You—what?”

She wiped hastily at her tearyeyes. “If believing something stupid like that gets you to stop bugging me,then go for it. I’m hungry, so I’m heading back. I expect you to be here brightand early tomorrow for another session.”

Sokka was still gaping as shepractically ran away from him. After several long moments, he shook himself outof it, smiling slightly.

“Toph, you really don’t know how tohandle a crush very well, do you?” He chucked to himself, touching his cheek.

every time i see a post by someone saying they just finished watching atla for the first time, i have this moment of jealousy–being able to experience atla for the first time all over again would be amazing, honestly–but then it’s replaced by this all-consuming sense of dread (and no small amount of pity) when i see the rest of the post (or in the tags) that they’re looking forward to watching lok.

like, especially if they’re gonna be coming fresh off of just barely finishing atla, expecting some amazing follow up to the series, and instead getting… that…………

like, it’d be bad enough if korra was just kind of a crappy show on its own. and don’t get me wrong, it absolutely is! the relationships are sloppy and inconsistent, the character development (where it exists at all) is all over the place, the plots make no sense and have ‘resolutions’ based on nonsensical fight sequences and dei ex machina because the showrunners couldn’t be assed to actually keep things consistent or bother with, like, narrative coherence or satisfying conclusions to plot arcs, probably because they figured Rule of Cool was good enough to keep the viewers distracted. on it’s own, korra would never have made waves. it probably would’ve been canceled after the second season at best, and hardly anyone would remember it. it managed to eke out four seasons by riding atla’s coattails and maintaining a meager fanbase who kept hoping things would Get Better (hint: they don’t)

but no, lok had to crap all over everything that was amazing about atla. the worldbuilding, which had been beautiful in its simplicity–there were complexities in the individual nations, but part of what made atla so amazing was that it didn’t miss the forest for the trees; there was a big picture that was gradually filled in as the story progressed, but still left plenty to the imagination rather than getting bogged down by so many details that the story got derailed–was actively destroyed come season 2 of lok, with near surgical precision. and the characters we spent sixty-one episodes getting to know and love in the original series?

well, let me do a headcount here:

katara: got to stick to the healing huts for the rest of her life, stuck at home with her two older children because they weren’t airbenders, and she was apparently perfectly content to let their father abandon them and her because apparently the only kid who was important to him was the airbender. katara, miss ‘i will never, ever turn my back on people who need me’, was nowhere to be found when her youngest son and his entire family were in grave danger. she also didn’t bother to attend her eldest granddaughter’s air master ceremony. i guess the journey was just too much for her old bones. (nevermind that in atla, the white lotus was made up of old men, one of whom [bumi] was over a century old, who still got to kick ass and take names. but whatever.)

aang: the afore-mentioned father who didn’t bother taking his oldest kids literally anywhere (not even ember island!!!) because he spent all of his time with his airbending kid and didn’t care if the other two had the slightest interest in their air nomad heritage. before you come @ me with ‘that’s just their interpretation!!! kya and bumi were exaggerating!!!!’, the air acolytes with whom aang and tenzin spent so much time while the latter was growing up and learning to airbend? they had no idea the avatar–THE AVATAR, the most famous person on the PLANET–even had other children!!! (and then, when bumi finally got to be an airbender two decades after his father died, he said ‘i hope i made you proud’ to his father’s statue–over something he was never able to control. as if he couldn’t imagine that his own father had ever been proud of him when he couldn’t bend anything. yes i’m still very mad about this.)

toph: had two kids with two different fathers, neither of whom her daughters ever met or knew the identity of, became police chief and then ‘retired’ (after getting her youngest off the hook for something, i forget, i think it had something to do with the incident where she permanently scarred her sister’s face [and then suyin had the gall to act like lin didn’t have perfectly valid reasons not to want to see her years later lmfao]), and fucked off to the swamp, completely abandoning her family and friends. (if the gaang could even be called friends by that point tbfh)

suki: disappeared

sokka: had a couple mentions, but he was dead, and nothing substantial was ever revealed about his life

zuko: the only one of the gaang who hadn’t either mysteriously vanished or been destroyed by the story. however, he was treated badly enough by the writers of the comics that i suppose it was only fair that he’s the only one who was a semi-decent parent, and who still cared about his family and his responsibilities. and he got a dragon so, i guess that’s one point in lok’s favor.

i just……… i’m so sad for anyone who’s about to go into lok thinking they’re getting something even approaching a spiritual successor to atla, and instead winding up with a crappy knock-off so poorly made the stitching is already coming out.
