Another cameo that's only notable because I have no clue why Vic would be here. He has literally never met Hal Jordan, how did he get an invite. He's even standing off to the back instead of sitting with everyone else.

The Question Returns

The river emissary is conceptually a lot better than any of the other supernatural takes on the Question. The idea that Vic's death in the river would make his conscience literally haunt him is interesting, and it being questionably supernatural is more to my taste. Making the river a magical harmonica-playing old black man was not a great choice though.

Vic describing Tot as "an ex-father figure" makes me want to implode.

"these auditory hallucinations are getting on my nerves" BIG mood.

Vic is a mess. He can't go home, he can't stay away, he's shifted from Vic Sage the hard-hitting journalist to Vic Sage the laid-back poker player but he hasn't been able to change the Question. This is why he takes up so much space in my brain.

Even after he left he still held on to his love for Myra and Hub City, and this is where he can't do it anymore. He will never see her again. Godddddddd.

Steel #38

I hadn't read this one before, and I'm glad I'm reading it now, because it's great. I gotta get into Steel eventually.

Vic declares himself teammates with John and then immediately splits up and gets his shit wrecked. Maybe let the guy with power armor protect you next time.

This wandering gambler era is fun, I wish it had lasted a little longer. There are so many interesting places Vic could pop up with poker incidents as an excuse, it's the perfect way to keep him around without him having anything specific going on.

A World for Burning (Tec #714-715)

Calling her a supporting character is maybe a stretch but she gets to talk to Martian Manhunter so I'm counting it.

Cataclysm

Vic interlude is over, time for events.

I like Cataclysm quite a bit. It's heavy on the cop shit and some of the issues are just not good, but I think the earthquake makes for a better citywide event than any of the "oh no it's the Joker" ones, and everyone involved really gets to shine.

Once again I am forced to admit I like when Cluemaster shows up. Steph saving her dad from Helena despite everything is a strong moment.

Random Encounters (Batman Chronicles #14)

OH NO. Ohhhh no. Strap in folks it's time for her to become a main character.

Renee talks to her brother about his guilt over killing when he was in the Navy, and she uses Two-Face's coin to make her point about randomness and how right and wrong aren't simple, which. Hhhhh.

Apparently she shot a guy who was trying to kill Two-Face, and got the coin in return.

Sorry but Renee flipping the coin and making decisions based on the outcome fucking annihilates me and I cannot BELIEVE I hadn't read this before now.

This is in continuity, but it ignores all of Vic's canon post-Charlton - he's a newscaster working with Nora from the Ditko run, Hub City is Ted's home city but not his, he's characterized pretty much how he was in Charlton and those few Blue Beetle crossovers post-Crisis... the other heroes seem a little more up-to-date but they're all still kind of janky.

Wow this does not do a good job making me care about any of these characters.

The plot is mostly racist and/or nonsense and most of it bounced right off my brain despite repeated readings.

Honestly I'm here for Ted more than Vic. He's going through it.

I do like the framing device of Vic writing his report in the final issue. The real treasure was the friends we made along the way.

Grinning down at me, this man decided this was the perfect moment to say the most cheesy flirts I'd heard in years.

I couldn't help myself.

Laughter bubbled from me as I clung to Solaris in an attempt to not fall again. I wasn't sure if it was because of the frantic scramble to save Leonela and the near-death fall or purely the fact that he had decided now was the perfect time to say something like that, but the whole situation was suddenly hilarious.

And my laughter was contagious. Solaris started to laugh as well. Soon we were clinging to each other, bodies shaking with murth as we tried to stay quiet and not fall to our deaths.

Catching my breath, I grinned up at Solaris. Lost in the adrenalin and hilarity, I said

"I fell for you ages ago. This was just a coincidence."

My brain caught up with my words, and my smile dropped. I shouldn't have said that! This was bad.

Solaris's smile left his face, but he didn't look upset. Longing had replaced the murth that had been there moments before.

"I know." He murmured.

I could have had a relationship with this man and his brother if I wasn't a vampire. They would go out and fight dark, evil creatures while I kept the home warm and ready for their return, working in a smithy for some extra money. We would have the summers together, going on adventures or staying home to snuggle up on the couch. Maybe we would even-

My train of thought was smashed. Solaris's warm lips were pressed to mine. I had been so swept up in what-ifs that I hadn't noticed him leaning forward.

I let out a squeak of surprise and pulled back, meeting his eyes... then I leaned in and pressed my lips back to his, my arms sliding around his neck as we melted into each other.

Maybe I could have all those wonderful things with my hunters...

Look, I put this one first because I NEED you to read it. Holy shit. Don’t let the cute excerpt fool you--this one is SO sad but simultaneously so tender. AU where Nemik lives and Cass lays low with the rebels for about six months after the heist. Really splendid work building out Nemik’s character from our moments in canon, great Cass moments, and overall just gorgeous writing. This take on their relationship reminds me a lot of AMCA’s take on Nemik having a crush on Cassian “in all possible ways” in their episode on “The Eye.”

Category: Luthen and Cassian fuck in the Fondor. I hope this becomes a fandom staple while waiting for s2, because it’s the perfect missing scene premise.

Cass’s recruitment is so fraught for Luthen, at such a dangerous intersection of his needs and the Rebellion’s, and this fic captures that tension so wonderfully with a very hot sex scene.

Pull some strings, let them sing by gloss (E)

Luthen Rael collects the precious and the unique from across the galaxy. He'd like to show Cassian just how important he can be, how beautiful he already is. (Takes place during 1x04 before they arrive on Aldhani.)

A little different take on Luthen--I wonder how this fic might be different if it was written after ep 12 aired. That being said, it’s great, and the ending is such a dazzling bit of character work for Cass. Sometimes a fic author will write something and you just know that it is true, even if canon never does it.

When this ship lands Cassian will disembark as a soldier, he’ll go where Luthen sends him, he’ll take orders. But not here. Not just yet.

oh my godddddddd this fic. Really taps into two of my favorite thematic moves from canon: Luthen being in the near-continuous process convincing himself that he is the person able to make these life-or-death choices, and Cassian’s two times boarding the Fondor as moments of rebirth. Again: an ending moment that is just perfectly true, even if canon never articulates it in this way (canon Luthen/Cass sex scene does seem pretty unlikely lol, though who knows. if any one could do it right it would be my guy Tony).

And here's where the Weird Shit really starts happening.

Reverie goes to bed and wakes up in the Velvet Limo, which happens periodically. Sup, guys.

Igor proclaims that it is dangerous for them to keep moving without proper understanding of the destination. And if you compare the other images to this one, you can see outside the Velvet Limo, when it is in motion, there is an ephemeral wavering light in the air.

Teddie is walking on the same road that the Velvet Limo is driving on.

"Arc, what does that mean?" I have NO IDEA! NONE!

The team gathers to go over the facts again and tackles the fact Namatame seems convinced he is saving people by throwing them in. Now, I have been wondering if that means he thinks death is better than what would happen to people if he didn't kill them, but a whole new fucking concept springs up.

The letters that Reverie got? Not from Namatame.

Namatame has been INSISTENT on terminology here, he's saving the people he hurls into the TV, so when the warning letters said "don't rescue people" and said next time someone close to Reverie would die

Someone else sent the letters. Someone who, UNLIKE ME, does know how the Midnight Channel works, who can either predict who it will show or who decides what it will show and picked Nanako.

This is STILL the facet of the mechanic that has been driving me batshit. How the fuck does the TV know. How does it decide. Does it decide at all.

Naoto talks our way into seeing Namatame and

Namatame says the first person he threw in was Yukiko.

I want to flip a fucking table. Namatame's first 'victim' was Yukiko. Yamano and Saki were not him. They were someone else.

So from Namatame's perspective: The Midnight Channel 'chooses' someone who will die. He grabs that person first and hurls them into the TV. And a few weeks like they return whole and healthy and are fine. BECAUSE WE KEEP SAVING THEM!

THAT'S why he doesn't understand how the fuck the TV world works! Because every time he's tossed someone in, they got out perfectly fine!!!!

Oh my godddddddd.

Namatame's whole motif of being a savior of love and peace makes sense. He even admits it was because of his ego that he misunderstood everything. But he saw Yamano on the TV and watched her die. When he tried to reach for her, his hand went through.

WHICH. WHAT. So far there have only been two options for TV Screen Permeability. One is getting your own Persona, like everyone from Yosuke to Naoto has now.

The other is whatever fucking gave Reverie the power. Which, to my recollection, was a weird dream in which.... he fought someone in a foggy place. There was just a door and then fog.

Somehow, Namatame got the same power. I'm.... literally sitting here trying to think of a commonality between Reverie and Namatame. I have no idea.

SIGH. I DUNNO!

Anyway, Yamano appeared on the TV and died. Then, Namatame saw Saki on the TV and tried to warn her, but she died too. Taking his TV-touching as a gift from Yamano, Namatame threw Yukiko into the TV after she appeared.

Lo and fucking behold, it worked. She was "saved."

And so.

Namatame isn't the killer, he was trying to help and boy howdy was he uninformed.

The killer of Yamano and Saki is still out there.

The real killer seems to be able to decide who is on the Midnight Channel before they appear. That's how he targeted Nanako.

I say it has to be Adachi not because I have a fucking shred of evidence but because he's the only fucking option left!!!!

But I don't know why or how! I am trying to figure out why Yamano was even killed. Like, Namatame mentions that she was investigating some local election thing. There's no details, no indicator why she had to die, who she pissed off. Why was she the first?

... Cannot fucking believe this game is making me have to figure out the weird scandal from the beginning of the fucking game!!!!

No details on what Yamano was looking into.

Still no clue what this place in Reverie's dream was.

i beat xvi so here are my reactions from along the way

i did not do this in any kind of organized way like i think i skipped writing anything down for big portions of the game;;;

spoilers obviously. and also after this i'm going to start reblogging xvi things including spoilers tagged #ffxvi so. be warned.

i guess i'll link my demo impressions because this is basically a continuation of that.

a mite predictable so far....... though i did think cid was gonna crystallize instead of regular dying.

GODDDDDD i wish there were a chatlog. or at least that dialogue were progressed manually. i don't have the focus for this shit when i can't even rewind it.

i love the combat a lot. which is weird to think seeing as i'm very much a turn-based fan and really. don't play action games ever. but it feels very kingdom hearts to me? there's even shotlock.

THE BIG MOMENTS ARE SO SO GOOD. A+ ON THE MELODRAMA.

clive is prime whump material and i love it.

some of the worldbuilding is a little baffling... mostly ORCS? REALLY? WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY CLASSIC FF OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM.

personal preference i guess but i feel like they could chill with the "mature content" a bit....... how many sidequests do we need to drive home how shit Bearers are treated. how many random sex workers does one game need.

i was going to complain about linearity, but things opened up nicely soon after i thought it, so props there LOL

i know it's supposed to be "dark" but like.... i want to fall in love with a game world. i want to wish i lived there. i want unique local flavors and COLOR. most of this so far is just generic medieval squalor. even places like the treno slums had beautiful waterways and plucky npcs and... COLOR...

jill feels like......... an afterthought. sometimes she's there; sometimes she's not, and it doesn't seem to matter either way. she barely talks. we haven't seen shiva in game since we first met back up with her. there's a vague implication that jill's doing important things but that's kind of it???

jill update: okay Things Happening but like. now she's out of commission? i'm getting sacrificed-for-man-pain vibes. i don't know; it's too soon to say that, but it just doesn't feel great.

the state of the realm UI is SOOOOO good. it's a bit of an overload in the way xiii's datalog was, but it's fine if i remind myself i can read things Later.

for real i. i feel like i'm not as upset as i COULD be because i was really emotionally preparing for Everyone to Die through the whole game. but wow. this still hurts.

i actually got maliciously spoiled with "clive dies" before i even got the game in my hands and partly succeeded at not letting that ruin the experience for me, but. damn i had a little bit of hope that it was a fake spoiler until i saw his hand.....

i mean it was a largely satisfying ending. the fights were good. the Moral of the Story felt a lil heavyhanded but i do love the Power of Friendship. it could have been a lot sadder. but i'm such a sucker for a real happy ending o|--<

i think trying to brute force myself into liking jill more has made me like her less;;;;;;;;; i will try a different approach. her getting left behind for the end didn't help though. for the record i'm talking about liking her as a character. she's a perfectly lovely person.
