Another Poe character! This time, it's Roderick Usher from "The Fall of the House of Usher". You may remember my earlier post with his twin sister, Madeline. Neither of them look like villains, which I love. Roderick just looks so sweet and unsuspecting, but he's actually incredibly controlling and insecure. He's obsessed with Lenore and is dedicating all his resources to finding her--but why is he doing that? Hm. Lenore sure as hell doesn't know. She has amnesia. And the plot thickens.

Happy Father's Day! I didn't prepare anything new, so have this sketch from 2 years ago. The characters are Emrys, a demon, and Starlight, a young witch he adopted. They're so cute. He dotes on her a lot.

Some more characters from other stories! This time, we have the main characters of my main project before I focused on TTAB. If you look back on my page, you'll see some other drawings of them I've posted over the past few years.

In order, we have:

T'Arnysh - 18 years old, water and air elementalist, part cat, very grouchy, my comfort character before Cerin, Alvie, Nimue, and Dwyer.

Aisehna - 15 years old, fire and earth elementalist, very impulsive and energetic. She and T'Arnysh have a complicated story, but in short, it's "childhood best friends to enemies to friends to lovers". We get the best of all the tropes!

Muran - 15 years old, wizard-in-training, T'Arnysh's younger sister. She left home shortly before the story begins to look for T'Arnysh. He got kidnapped when he was 10. Aisehna was also kidnapped at around the same time, but by different people.

Lueka - 16 years old, troubadour, changeling (which in this world is a type of faerie with no wings and random superpowers), can turn into a dragon, one of his eyes can see through anything (but he can't turn it off, so he wears an eyepatch over it)

Rose - 14 years old, from our world (actually, she's Alvie’s classmate), one of three reincarnating beings called Teldrae Souls. Remember the Sybil and Nyneve? She's one of them.

Tristan - 16 years old, friends with Aisehna because they're in the army together, can magically camouflage with his surroundings (like a chameleon but way better)

Lorelei - ancient immortal, the villain, has the power to create monsters she uses as minions

Emeir - 20 years old, assassin, hired by Lorelei to work against the heroes, half-faerie (hence the ears) - the tattoo under her eye is a cultural thing, not an assassin thing

I didn't finish writing their story, because I got bored, but I still have the notebooks. Yes, notebooks. I was 14 and writing this out by hand. Last time I read the notebooks, I cringed so hard. Which is good, because it means my writing has improved! Their story and world have changed significantly in the last several years and I'm planning on coming back to them someday. They're going to have some epic adventures.

Finally remembered to post!!! I've had a lot of art pile up in the last little bit. I was busy during the power outage.

So, some sketches of Tiernan! If you don't remember, he's the Hound from "The Strange Case of the Medium and the Hound", the short story I wrote for my Historical Fiction class. This is more or less how he appears in the story. Well, the left side of the page is. He looks creepy, but respectable. Ophelia doesn't see his wolfish teeth until the action starts.

To create Tiernan, I combined legends of the Irish cu sith with the English black dog. So, he can turn into a wolflike black dog, but he’s Irish and hails from the Otherworld, where faeries live. His origins are kept vague in the story itself. All Ophelia knows is that she accidentally summoned him from another plane of existence and now he refuses to leave. She also knows that he can shift from a dog to a human and assume the image of other people (he disguises himself as a doctor at one point).

He's a pretty fun character that I'll be putting some more work into! I have lots of ideas about him and why he doesn't want to go back to the Otherworld.

I keep forgetting to post, so have some sketches!

In order, we have:

Nimue, back when she was younger and becoming the awesome enchantress she is today.

My version of the mysterious Gallo-Roman god Cernunnos. I have one or two other drawings of him around here somewhere.

Ophelia. I drew this while I was researching 1870s clothes. I wanted to get a sense of what she'd wear during the story.

Kai, a non-TTAB OC. I have a recent post explaining her deal. She's the one with purple hair!

Wolf, Kai's friend. I've been drawing him a lot lately. He's just fun to draw.

And Merlin with his hair down! It gets boring to have it braided all the time.

Has anyone here seen Galavant? It's one of my favourite shows 😆 I took some funny lines from it and drew my characters saying them. This show's chaotic energy is well-suited to these idiots. It's actually a really good way to practice expressions! I'm planning on doing some more at some point, so stay tuned!

Note: Nimue does not have a dragon. Yet.

Also Cerin’s eyes will sometimes glow when he's mad. Magic is loosely linked to emotions, so most magic-users will have some sort of side effect when they're really emotional.

One of the perks of being a history major is that you're surrounded by inspiration 😁

This is Cernunnos! He's based on a Gallo-Roman god we know virtually nothing about. There's no surviving mythology, so all we have to go off of are several depictions of a man with antlers. It's very cool to research. And it's great for character design.

I'm still figuring what my Cernunnos is the god of, but it has something to do with wilderness and maybe the dead. I'm getting inspiration from some of the academic articles I've read, which have all sorts of theories.

I'm kind of proud of this sketch because I did it without references while I was watching TV. I prefer to use references, especially with poses and angles im less familiar with, but it's nice to know I can survive without them if I need to.

Also I've made a friend for him whose portrait I'll post in a day or two.

The Lady of the Lake

It occurred to me the other night that I haven't drawn Nimue in her element in years, so I had to fix that right away. This was a great opportunity to experiment with a few things! The colours are less saturated than usual, giving it a more realistic feel, and I had fun colouring the water and figuring out the lighting! Also, wet hair. I'll be doing more of that later.

Anyway, the results are very pretty and magical. This feels like a chilly morning, maybe in the spring or autumn.

Happy Valentine's Day! It's a day late, but that's fine because February 15th is when all the chocolate goes on sale.

Pluto and Lenore definitely don't have a Valentine's Day colour palette 😆 I love their relationship. They don't trust people easily, so it's kind of miraculous that they grew so close. They grow to have so much confidence in each other and their abilities, but they're also there to figure out when the other one needs help. Also Pluto’s a cat person, so he's just naturally cuddly. Makes for a great relationship.

The cover of a short story I wrote for my Historical Fiction class! It's set in London in 1876 and follows Ophelia Fawkes, a young medium who is trying to move on with her life following an accident at a séance. However, that may be impossible because she thinks she's being followed by a spectral black dog.

I did two illustrations for this story, the second of which I'll post later. It was really fun to experiment with lighting, because that's not my strong point. Also I loved researching 1870s clothes for Ophelia. Her father died several months before the story begins, so she's in mourning clothes. She's actually moving into a stage called "half-mourning", where she gradually integrates colour back into her clothing.

I'm adding to the Poe Society line up!!! Finally getting some villains! This is is Madeline Usher, from The Fall of the House of Usher. Again, in the original story, she wasn't very developed, though we're breaking from tradition because she didn't actually die 🤣

I actually came up with her a few months ago and I've been developing her in that time, so I know what her role in my story is! She, along with her twin brother Roderick, is part of a very old organization of magic-users. This organization is the villain. Madeline is an especially terrible person. I've decided that she's the one responsible for Pluto's imprisonment and she's the reason he only has one eye.

Designing her was so much fun. You look at her and you don't see a ruthless villain, you see a preppy university student. I'm just in love with her design. Also I really want her sweater. It looks so cozy!
