"Mr. Ryu, I'm afraid I'll need all your raspberry and peppermint leaf supply for the day. Lady Park hasn't been doing too well in the early stages of her pregnancy," the physician announced upon entering the apothecary where he regularly obtained his medicines and herbs, his eyes busily scanning around for anything else that could be useful.
"Is that so? You might want to consider our latest batch of Codonopsis root imported directly from China just a week ago. It's highly effective in boosting vital energy and reducing fatigue during pregnancy."
Yunho's head shot up in surprise.
First of all, why hadn't he thought of that before? More importantly, the feminine voice addressing him sounded nothing like the elderly man who usually managed the store. He turned to find a young woman behind the counter, his eyes widening in astonishment.
"O-oh, um... hello there. I didn't realise Mr. Ryu had such a young wife," he blurted out before cursing himself, feeling embarrassed for making such a hasty assumption.

Miyamoto Musashi
Fue un destacado artista marcial, importante señor feudal y guerrero famoso del Japón Feudal, reconocido por haber escrito el famoso tratado de artes marciales titulado “El libro de los cinco anillos”.
Su nombre completo es Shinmen Musashi no Kami Fujuwara no Harunobu,
Los detalles de sus primeros años son difíciles de precisar. Según el propio Musashi en su famoso libro de los cinco anillos, nació en una provincia que se ubica en la actual prefectura de Hyogo en la isla de Honshu en 1584.
El padre de su padre era un famoso señor feudal de la época. Musashi no Kami, era un titulo judicial que lo convirtió en el gobernador nominal de la provincia de Musashi.
Cuando Musashi tenía 7 años de edad su padre murió o desapareció (no se sabe con seguridad), y dado que su madre había muerto un año antes de la desaparición de su padre, Musashi fue puesto al cuidado de un sacerdote tío materno suyo.
Hijo de Samurai durante una de las épocas mas violentas del Japón, los escritos lo describen como un joven de gran carácter, con gran fuerza de voluntad y con un físico sumamente desarrollado para su edad.
Por insistencia de su tío, estudió las artes del guerrero y esto, unido a su físico y a su carácter violento hizo que pronto se viera involucrado en participar en combates. Según sus propias palabras; “Desde mi primera juventud mi corazón se inclinó hacia el camino del guerrero”.
En su célebre libro, Musashi afirmó que su primer duelo exitoso fue a los 13 años de edad, combatiendo contra un samurai de nombre Arima Kihei quien era un experto samurai de la zona perteneciente a la escuela de artes marciales Shinto Ryu de Kenjutsu.
El segundo combate serio del que se tiene registro, ocurrió cuando Musashi contaba con 16 años de edad, derrotando a un samurai de la provincia de Tajima. Es por ese tiempo que Musashi abandona su casa para buscar experiencia y conocimiento a través de todo tipo de duelos y concursos de los que resultó siempre triunfador. Casi siempre las disputas se coronaban con la muerte del rival.
En su libro afirma que participó en mas de 60 duelos con diferentes guerreros de todo tipo y formación. Por ese tiempo había muchos ronin (samurais sin amo) que al igual que Musashi, solían vagar por el país y durmiendo en el suelo raso, sin preocuparse de nada que no fuera su entrenamiento físico.
Musashi abandonó este tipo de vida a la edad de 50 años cuando consideró que ya había que aprendido lo que tenía que aprender a base de vagabundear.
Musashi participó como guerrero en el ejército de Ashikaga en la batalla de Sekingahara, siendo parte del bando perdedor, no obstante a pesar de que la batalla duró tres días y en donde murieron alrededor de 70,000 soldados Musashi logró salir con vida.
La escuela de Miyamoto incorpora el uso de un sable corto llamado wikizashi o soto, que es un sable corto y que se usa como proyectil. Esta misma escuela también considera el uso de un sable largo llamado katana el cual se lanza como si se tratara de una jabalina a una distancia maxima de 4 metros.
Se dice que Miyamoto alcanzó una gran habilidad para lanzar tanto el sable real como un sable de madera llamado Bokken.
El duelo mas famoso de Musashi fue a la edad de 30 años contra Sasaki Kojiro, un destacado espadachín japonés en 1612. Sasaki Kojiro era un samurai con fama de invencible, quien había conseguido desarrollar una técnica de combate basada en el movimiento de la cola de la golondrina en vuelo.
Musashi es conocido por los japoneses como Kensei que quiere decir “esgrimista divino” o “santo de la espada”.
En 1643 escribió “El libro de los cinco anillos” en referencia a la tierra, agua, fuego, viento y vacío (los 5 elementos del universo del budismo) Es el único entre los libros de artes marciales que trata no solo de la estrategia militar o el combate individual con espada, sino ademas es un libro que trata de cualquier situación en donde es necesaria una táctica.
En 1642 Musashi sufrió ataques de neuralgia, indicios de su futura vida de enfermedad. En 1643 se retiró a una caverna en el monte Iwato para dedicar su vida a la contemplación. Murió en la cueva Religando posiblemente el 13 de junio de 1645.
Su cuerpo fue enterrado con su armadura como era su deseo.

a ryu si-o analysis
in view of the upcoming episode today, we're going to do a mini-deep-dive on ryu si-o, so grab a snack, a glass of water, get comfortable, and buckle in:
now, we'll be looking at his psychology based on what we know about him for sure + byeon woo seok's portreyal of the character
1. emotions
we can see throughout the whole series that ryu si-o is someone who 'talks' through his body and actions. his words are too straightforward and candid. he keeps his sentences to the point and includes many quotes from his childhood, which implies that he doesn't plan his words or think too much about subtext or manipulation through speaking, his words are just a means of communication to him. his real mode of expression is through his body language.
obviously, since his childhood, any expression of emotion which didn't show authority, or control would cause more harm than anything – meaning that anger is probably the only emotion he would never have had to hide, and he would've actively practiced seeming confident in all situations. We see his body language in public always coming off as very condescending: his stance, his posture, etc. and we know it's a practiced behaviour, because he sheds all these actions when he's by himself at home.
Publically, we see si-o mostly express anger/disapproval + his classic, almost devious smile he has around most strangers.
the only other emotion we've seen him express publically is: his fondness for nam-soon.
his only experience of friendship was through this boy, binbin, who made sacrifices for him and was probably present during his darkest times, including when they decided to runaway.
receiving that type of love, as a child, especially from someone he would have considered an equal, would have definitely impacted his views on allowing himself to receive love and knowing what it feels like. he clearly doesn't shy away from the vulnerability of the emotion, or the warmth of it, because i don't think he's ever personally seen it as a weakness. rather, he's seen it as something that gave him strength in a place that held him down.
and because he knows what it feels like to receive that sort of warmth, he definitely had no problem giving it to nam-soon.
we know that his feelings for her have developed from viewing her as the 'perfect weapon', and wanting to use her because it's so clear that, while he seems persistent in trying to keep nam-soon on his side, he wants her to choose him for exactly who he. he would truly tell/give her anything she asked for, even at cost to himself.
a man who saw her as a 'means to a goal' would have no trouble using force at any point, or treating her recklessly, but you see the care he holds for her and his instinct to protect her, even from himself.
at the same time though, because of his training, and maybe because of an experience we might find out about later, he knows logically, that relationships are pressure points that can be targeted. so it's definitely something he consciously chooses to display, and nam-soon's strength probably helped him be less hesitant in making his feelings for her obvious.
again, his expression of his affection is mostly proved through his body language, in his gaze, and how badly he wants to be relied upon to provide for her, because it's the only type of love that he knows: to need someone. Or rather, to be needed.
verbally, he's very direct in his statement of emotions, as if he loses nothing to reveal them, and this shows that he does not associate expressing emotions like affection, interest, or even rejection with embarassment, which makes sense considering: nothing is truly embarrassing when you’ve spent almost every day of your life trying to be useful enough to be kept alive, which leads us to our final emotion:
fear, the one he holds the closest to himself.
it transforms him instantly, and brings back the ten year old version of himself.
we see his hands almost shaking when he goes to take a call from his contact in the mafia, and it means so much that he has such a tight lid on the rest of his emotions but cannot control this specific visceral fear he feels.
simultaneously, he views them as a type of parental figure, regardless of the damage they've done, and thinks of going against them as "rebelling" rather than escaping, which i also think has something to do with the outcome of his escape attempt in childhood.
fear is also the emotion he keeps the most guarded, because to reveal it, means death, quite literally.
he's very careful to put his mask back in place, everytime, and it's very clear if you look closely that the emotion fueling all his acts of violence comes directly from a place of fear.
the one time we've seen him show that side of himself, is to nam-soon unsurprisingly.
it proves how intuitively he had come to trust her, almost as if she were loyal to only him, and part of his mini-mafia – which is definitely a type of "with me or against me" mindset that's developed within him throughout all his years in the mafia.

Strong Girl Nam Soon is falling into that sweet spot for me between being good and entertaining enough to make me invested in it and having sufficient flaws to make me deeply frustrated.
So obviously I'm going to analyse it way more than it deserves!
I think
The characterisation (or lack of it) of Nam Soon herself. Quite a lot to delve into here. She started off with a really intriguing origin and character with lots of directions in which she could go in... and she just hasn't developed at all really. She starts up very idealistic and naive which is understandable considering her upbringing. She acts charming in a childish way. She is rash and thoughtless but fundamentally good-hearted and on the side of the underdog and uses her powers for good. All of these are qualities that make sense in who she is but she is very immature. The show keeps these qualities but instead of interrogating them and allowing her to mature realistically while suffering inevitable set-backs and challenges to her idealism, she keeps all of this, is somehow incredibly attractive to both the hero and villain (despite her child-like tone and mannerisms - I genuinely find this so odd) and adds being a super spy to her list of accomplishments. (Surely being a good spy is literally the opposite set of skills to being good at brute force and not thinking before you act?) Dare I say it... she's a Mary Sue! Which leads onto the second issue with Nam Soon which is she is both over-powered and not given enough to do with her powers. The first few episodes showed her frequently using her super strength and it was very cool and superhero-like and fitted the apparent theme (and name) of the show. But she's rarely used them in the latter half of the show. Meanwhile she also has super speed, super vision and I'm sure something I'm forgetting. If she's got these skills, she needs to use them frequently and to advance the plot or it feels quite pointless. Instead, we see her playing the role of a spy which feels totally OOC. How is she so good at lying all of a sudden? It doesn't fit at all with the character we were introduced to in the first couple of episodes. Someone who just builds a ger in the middle of a public park and beats up everyone who tries to stop her without any thought for consequences is... not going to be good at a danger-filled spy mission in a high security mafia joint. Right???? It's hard to care too much about Nam Soon because there seem to be no consequences to her actions, she doesn't seem to respond realistically to what happens around her based on her own established character, and she doesn't seem to have developed from the beginning to close to the end of the drama.
Second issue is the way the romance(s) are being played. Look, I'm happy for the grandma and all and I think it's lovely she's getting a romance with sweeping soundtrack and dramatic moments but it is a bit odd that this is the relationship that is getting the most attention in the show. Nam Soon and Hee Sik are adorable and I can get behind a cute relationship without ridiculous manufactured impediments but very little attention is given to it and just as Nam Soon's character is very static, so is the relationship. There are no issues between the pair of them (and there easily should be) and their relationship doesn't seem to impact the other at all and make them grow individually as well as together, which a really good fictional relationship should do. It's cute - and that's it. As for Ryu Si-o, hmm, another puzzle. I'm usually behind villain romances and redemption arcs (I'm a Reylo shipper, for goodness sake) but I'm struggling to see it here. Mainly because Nam Soon acts so childish, I feel a bit icky shipping her in a relationship that is so adult coded. I know she's an adult (I'm not some weird purity shipper who can't deal with a bit of an age gap) but the way the actress plays the character makes her come across as so immature that I just can't read it romantically. And she has no interest in him. Nothing he says seems to sway her or interest her. She's a good little foot soldier and nothing else. Which is very boring, but that's the characterisation... Frustating. And don't get me started on the bizarre way Nam Soon's family is gunning for this "you have consummate this relationship and have strong girls when you're 22". Any normal person would be running for the hills! Why is this not creepy and an issue? Very bizarre.
The way the characters are forced to be unbelievably stupid to make the plot work. Like, it seems TOTALLY unbelieavable that Nam Soon has not been caught. She's really unconvincing as a spy - why is nobody running better background checks on her? How has Si-o not found Nam Soon before? Like, with his resources, it can't be hard! Why is nobody suspicious? Why did the police department let their supervisor lick a known deadly drug then believe him when he said he was okay and not take him to hospital etc.? Absolutely clown behaviour. Why does Geum Joo take the trouble of putting bodyguards around her family because they are all in danger but her closest confidante doesn't come into work on a very important day and won't answer the phone, just texts to say "she's ill" and Geum Joo is like "Sure, that sounds legit"? Why did nobody communicate about Nam In and the symptoms of the drug? The whole Nam In plot altogether... Why are the men in the family not just "not strong" but completely emasculated and massive losers? We're apparently dealing with wealthy and successful people but they're all behaving like complete incompetents! Which would be funny if the show had retained the comic tone it started with but it's got quite dark and so it's tonally off.
Okay. Enough whinging. Under the cut, I'm going to give some suggestions for how I would rewrite aspects of the show to try to make it less frustrating. (I'm so close to writing fanfic but I know I won't haha.)
First, the things I'd definitely keep:
The grandma's entire plot
Geum Joo being a total badass
Nam Soon's initial characterisation (and her plaits)
Cute romance with Hee Sik
Si-o's characterisation and tragic backstory
The drug plot - I don't mind it at all
In other words, I'd keep the show telling the same story but I'd alter the characterisation.
Nam Soon would have a lot more inner conflict, which she can have without losing a fundamentally optimistic outlook. She finds it very hard to living in Korea. Her homeless friends play a much bigger role and she dedicates herself to trying to make social changes to make society more egalitarian and is continually frustrated by her inability to make progress within the system. It leads to clashes with her mother after an initial honeymoon phase of being reunited who cannot understand why she can't just throw money at individuals and consider it done and why Nam Soon even grows to resent her own family's wealth. It also leads to clashes with Hee Sik, whose role as a police officer means he is upholding the very social order she finds so unfair. On the other hand, it drives her towards Ryu Si-o who she discovers knows more than anyone else in her life about destitution and who is willing to operate outside the law to effect change.
I also think it would be very interesting to have Si-o discover very early on who Tsetseg is. She is a terrible liar and not sneaky at all so he realises first that she is planted as a spy but she is so obviously terrible at it that he is more amused than angry and then he digs around and realises she is Nam Soon. He realises all this before/as he develops feelings for her. He decides to keep her around to keep the enemy close but quickly finds her straight forward attitude which comes through despite her best intentions and frustrations with many of the things that frustrate him too compelling and he ends up getting distracted from his business with the drugs in order to do big bad mafia villain type things like funding soup kitchens. And of course, social justice warrior Nam Soon who is learning about class inequality and really trying to do something about it is shown to mature by her dropping her childlike tone and mannerisms over the course of the show.
Honestly, can this end up being a Hee Sik/Nam Soon romance when he has so little he can contribute to her development? I'm honestly not sure. It depends how far down the redemption path you're willing to take Si-o. And I don't know how the show will end but redemption by death is so boring...
More exploration of strength and how Nam Soon and Si-o parallel each other. Oh botheration, no matter how I try to look at it, they ought to have the most compelling dynamic for a ship! It's just Nam Soon's mannerisms that stop me shipping it. :( On paper, it's a no brainer! Maybe I'll just plan a superhero/villain original romance instead!
Anyway, I just wish this show made more sense and was more coherent because I do like it enough to be engaged and invested. And the ideas and initial characters were so cool. Geum Joo - what a bamf! A whole series about her but without her strange lack of attention to issues with people near her... or deal with it properly as a significant character flaw.

So...as I've been watching Strong Girl Nam-soon, I've been feeling like Ryu Si-o is deeply misunderstood. Yes, he's behind the drugs and a few murders, I'm not being delusional there. But there were soft moments when he tried to see if he could confide in Nam-soon. He let himself smile, he let loose, and not only that, he's been trying to find his childhood friend. As soon as he found out that he was betrayed, he fucking LOST IT. I've been feeling like he stayed in the Mafia out of obligation, or maybe to destroy them from the inside. I don't know, I just feel like there's more to it. I also want to point out that for Nam-soon to be so sweet, she also tends to brush people aside or their concerns, because she's strong. I'm not attacking her, as I've seen this from all of the women in her family...but to see her callously discuss using Ryu when he had feelings for her didn't sit well with me. Or how the formerly homeless woman she met has randomly disappeared, but she didn't ask the ex-boyfriend about her? (I don't remember their names, maybe it was a plot hole?) I don't know, these are my random thoughts as the series will be over soon.

Si-o is not Bang Je-su level but both are>Kaneki+Ppang#if this gets a season 2 unlike BYT though I'll be too mad at jtbc; theres enough actual good series hanging minus next seasons#I like Bread Song's aesthetic but begs the question why weren't the mom and Bread Song the actual main characters from the start?#oh and also their whole use of names and codeword was weird and not too...well interesting for lack of a better word#the whole biblical st. paul bread thing...#(Pavel is Russian for Paul)

Here comes the random ass thoughts that nobody asked for but I will put out here anyway.
Please be warned my opinions are whack and I'm just here for the fiction I want.
I started watching Strong girl Nam Soon because I saw that Bo young and Hyung Sik cameo clips and then I was swayed by edits of the cutesy villain. Ahahha.
I have gotten to the point where I skip random episodes and scenes and mostly just watch the ones with Si-o because the others just dont interest me as much. This is coming from someone who loved Do Bong Soon okay??!!
And personally I feel like the only character that has any depth (even if the depth is crazy villain-ness mostly, yes I accept that the actor being good and hot does add to this) is Ryu Si O. I am only here for his minor redemption arc which is him somehow ending the Russian Mafia and going off into the wild. Yes I get that he has killed a bunch of people, he is still my favourite. His presence isnt bland. And I love sunshine boys and sunshine girls!
Initially it was a little sad that Nam Soon wouldnt give him the time of day no matter what he did. But I am over that now. Tbf her romance barely fits into this whole narrative. Her and hee sik dont have any development together. Except that theyre really nice to each other which would be ideal in real life but this is fiction and I am here for the wild wild west where a crazy villain does not end up dying but reels it in a little bit, enough to get the nice protagonist who by that point should have slightly not black and white character developement.
Basically, if they kill Si O i will be sad. No matter all the chaos he has caused which is yes not great.
So all I will mostly be doing is scrolling the internet trying to find out what happens to my boy and then I will hope kdramaland kinda progresses a bit into the villain is the hero of this show kinda thing and this boy gets to act in it. Somewhat like devil judge. They went places with that show. Even the glory tbh. But those shows had a different deal.
