I'm trying to coherently express a bunch of connected fandom observations and the first draft is not working. Trying again.
People are not wrong when they observe that broadly individuals in fandom (especially newer fans) are getting increasingly prone to emotional prioritization (ex: feeling personally attacked when people criticize a character they identify with, or feeling personally betrayed by creators they've parasocialized when reality differs from their view) and also a general lack of boundaries with cast and crew (thanks twitter), and it's leading to bad outcomes - both from a "stifling healthy analytical engagement with the narrative" perspective and a "leading to bad behavior toward creators / other fans" perspective.
I also think that emotionally driven analysis attitudes like "I liked this therefore it was objectively good" are contributing to idolization-cancellation cycles, which is known, but also the resulting polarization (ex: "Since it's objectively good, the only explanation for the people who dislike it is they must wrongly think it's bad and probably harmful") + awareness of the first point might actually be creating the assumption of backlash that isn't there? Like - personal anecdote - despite being in the center of the canon-critical discussions post-OFMD S2 and historically having seen twitter receipts about the fandom's bad behavior, I have yet to see any post, screenshot, or even direct telling of an incident actually @-ing the creators other than circulating posts with effusive praise for the season (which sometimes have an attitude of trying to "drown out" the supposed harassment?). And yet people in both camps re: S2 are seemingly convinced creator harassment is a serious problem that is undoubtedly going on because fans are posting criticism in fandom spaces (some of which does accuse the show of ableism or homophobia due to everything being moralized nowdays - too many people think something needs to be problematic before they can criticize it - but again doesn't actually @ anybody).
And on top of that, both of these views of what is going on when someone posts angry criticism of X - either the concern for the health of their emotional investment in a story that's not being written specifically for them OR the assumption that there's an inherent malice and moral weight in disliking something where critics think the creators must be punished and the show canceled - ignore a pretty big elephant in the room that sometimes people are just venting. Sometimes the salty post about how maybe the main character should have been killed off is literally just sarcasm and bad feelings entirely proportional to watching a tv show and not actually a concerning lack of media literacy. Occasionally the op (myself included) probably is being kind of a dick because they are irritated but tbh it's not any bigger of a deal than that because lots of people are dicks sometimes.
There's a real, complex person behind all those posts, and - especially on tumblr - the fandom engagement / online persona that you see is not actually all of them? A post on their 95% fandom posting blog about eating a showrunner's heart in the marketplace doesn't actually prove that the most serious concerns of their day to day life are showrunner crimes or that they approve of the death penalty for bad writing.
Like in the midst of being concerned about troubling trends we should also maybe remember to watch out for various ways to assume the absolute worst of anyone who disagrees with us, because that in itself is a troubling trend that can easily make fandom worse?

But that was just a story. Reality is in the details and even if you can predict what's going to happen you can't imagine how you'll feel.

'Why creatives are seeking residuals' - thread by Stefanie Williams
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Tweet thread by Stefanie Williams @/StefWilliams25
TRANSCRIPT:
Why creatives are seeking residuals vs. "do you pay the mattress maker every time you sleep on a mattress?" A thread. I keep hearing over and over again that writers/actors/creatives don't deserve residuals for the work they create. "If I build a bathroom in a house, I don't get paid every time someone uses the toilet."
TRUE! However, your bathroom build has a set market value. Art does not. No one knows what makes one TV show an overnight success, and another a flop. No one knows what makes one song a hit, and the other a dud. If they did, trust me when I say record companies would be churning out Taylor Swifts over and over again. Studios would be making nothing but Stranger Things.
But that isn't the case. No one could predict Stranger Things would be a massive, billion dollar hit. No one could predict Taylor Swift was going to be a world wide phenomenon who literally could record herself reading Aesop's Fables and make millions of dollars. Which is why residuals are important. The pay structure protects both the creators and the publishers/distributors.
The easiest way to explain it is by referencing an author writing a book. Sure, an author might get a very modest up front fee, but the author is banking on royalties to really make money on the book — for every book sold, the author gets a piece of the pie. This protects both the author and the publisher—because if the book is a flop, the publisher doesn't go broke on a financial promise they made to the author that didn't pan out, and if the book is a mega-hit, the author didn't give away a massive, million-dollar book for 20k.
It's a sliding scale that is required for a product that has no set market value. What makes an actor's work on a hit show more valuable than an actor's work on a show that gets canned after five episodes? The market value for art almost always comes after the fact, so residuals account for that reality. They make sure the creator get compensated at a fair market rate. A person who builds a bathroom knows, upfront, what the market rate for a bathroom is. That bathroom won't suddenly be worth 1000 times more than you built it for in six months. It doesn't have the potential to be built for 20k and generate 20 million.
Residuals are a pay structure that simply account for an unsure market value. Trust me, we all wish we could quantify art in terms of dollars. But art is unpredictable. So studios and streamers -- which literally REQUIRE content to stay viable -- have to account for that unpredictability. And for studios (or record labels, or book publishers) it's always trial and error. The only way to get a hit, is to go through a few flops.
For every Whitney Houston, there was a singer you never heard of. For every Sopranos, there was a show that got scrapped mid season. For every Titanic, there was a movie that bombed. For every Twilight, there was a book about vampires that went nowhere. Residuals are kind of a reverse market valuation. They pay a fair wage for a product than can only have a set value once it's been created and effectively consumed.
And even then, shit changes. Anyone think Kate Bush would spend weeks on the top of the charts in 2022? Residuals account for unpredictable markets. And in order to have accurate residuals, streamers and studios need to be transparent and open about their data, which is one of the MANY things the WGA and SAG are both fighting for.

It Could Happen Here - The IMF Admits We Were Right About Inflation is a great episode not only because it's a pretty good economy lesson that a beginner could listen to and understand, but also because at the end of the episode it's comparison between the greed-flation theory and the supply chain theory of inflation shows very well why the theory we feel drawn to to explain the world isn't always the theory we need.
Just because 'the problem is evil CEOs' feels true and carries some grains of truth, doesn't mean it's necessarily useful. And when we have a more nuanced evidence based theory of inflation, we can not only accurately predict when inflation is going to hit, we can also recognize when labor-vs-management battles are going to arise, mobilize early and understand the nature of the fight we're in.
So, ya know, GO LISTEN TO IT.
And oh boy, there are A LOT or others parts of reality where we would be better equipped to resist oppression if we tried to have a constantly updated and evidence-based system understanding of the forces at work and didn't default to 'the problem is evil people deciding to be evil'.

discipline vs. motivation
some people tend to rely on motivation in order to manifest their desires, as in, waiting for the right time to identify with their desires. however, motivation — as good as it might make you feel — can be an indicator for why you condition yourself and your desires.
downsides of motivation.
see, motivation is cool as fuck. you get a sudden burst of energy and the urge to finally do things that you have already been planning on doing but never quite got to start, continue or finish — because that's what motivation is! the desire, the willingness and the cause to (physically) do something. feeling motivated is genuinely such a great feeling that makes you feel like nothing and no one can harm you, and that you are limitless and unstoppable, similarly to feeling confident.
unfortunately, feeling motivated doesn't last too long. just like any other emotion, it fades away. we stop feeling that way after some time and start to feel different or maybe the exact opposite. you simply cannot force to feel a certain way and you shouldn't punish yourself for not feeling motivated as often either!
if you only embody your desired self once you are in a good mood, you might not be able to actually become them physically. you won't be able to let that state materialise itself because you don't truly inhabit it. all you do is visit that state, enjoy it, realise that it's not your state to begin with and that it does not reflect your reality as it is, and return to your old state. it's very similar to daydreaming and imagining. if you only "manifest" (aka be) once you feel a rush of ecstasy, you can only do it once in a while but will eventually go back to "not manifesting" (aka not being).
importance of discipline.
this is why discipline is so important. you cannot solely rely on motivation, an emotion that comes and goes unpredictably, making it hard for you to maintain your desired state of mind and living in the end. whereas being disciplined is an action that comes from you. it's a choice you make, a decision, a promise you keep to yourself. it's quite predictable because you are free to declare whenever you want to discipline yourself.
sometimes, manifesting — or let's say being the person you want to be — can be difficult. you will experience days where you absolutely don't feel like that person at all, where you don't even want to accept that you are your desired version of self and knowingly prevent yourself from occupying the state of the wish fulfilled. and babes, it's okay. it's okay to feel saggy, to feel drained, to feel so bored to the point where you cannot stand living in your imagination due to the outer world. but you wanna know what's not so okay? giving up on yourself as soon as things get hard. stopping to believe in your power and losing faith in how, when or if things will ever manifest.
whether you like it or not, you have to persist through things you don't feel like persisting through. you have to keep trusting yourself, you have to continue what you have been doing for god knows how long until god knows how long and not question it. don't question your every move, because your only job is to live in your imagination, becoming aware of who you want to be and experiencing that version of yours in consciousness.
with love, ella.

Marvel Multiverse TTRPG
The Marvel Multiverse TTRPG is genuinely well designed and I am confounded.
Previously, I'd read Marvel Universe TTRPG (which is a completely different system written in the 90s) and was caught off guard by how clever *it* was. In it, you assign power gems almost like a worker placement minigame to pass checks, prioritizing effect vs safety.
Marvel Multiverse TTRPG is a totally different system by a totally different team, and now I have to confront the reality that there are at least two very elegantly designed and unfortunately Disney-owned Marvel TTRPGs.
So, what makes Marvel Multiverse work? Well, it starts with a bad idea.
Marvel Multiverse runs on a d616. This sounds *awful* but it's the best bit of tech I've ever seen in a game with this high a budget.
First, that 616 is actually 3d6. You roll and add up, and mathematically this gives you more average outputs. Also the "1" crits on a 1, and its 1s count as 6s. So it's basically an extra strong d6 that hands you crits 1/6th of the time.
If you crit but miss the target number you botch instead, but Multiverse's advantage/disadvantage system gives you the option of rerolling individual d6s. So you can try to hit the TN, or you can crit fish.
Also, that "1" tells you your attack damage. It's used as part of a formula that also factors in your stats and optionally weapon. No need for a second damage roll. You get a really high density of information out of a single pass through the 3d6.
Now, Marvel Multiverse is still a very traditional style TTRPG. You can hop from DnD to this and barely notice the change in scenery---it's just the dice are cleaner, faster, and more predictable. You're still moving around in 5 foot squares, using your suite of character-specific powers, swinging at and sometimes missing a rat.
But those rat-misses happen a fair bit less, and your special abilities all come from one big mana bar called Focus, and you can intentionally spam your powers until it puts you in a stupor.
Basically, I'd recommend this system to three people:
-It's Marvel Give Me Marvel
-I Want To Play Modern AU Superhero DnD
-Fellow Sleek Core Mechanics Enthusiast, This Core Mechanic Is Sleek AF
If those people are you, you may want to give it a look.

‘Warrior takes an armored cat for a walk’ (着甲武人猫散歩逍遥図) by Noguchi Tetsuya, 2014. Image widely shared on social media.
There's an image that's been shared on social media dozens of times over the past few years, typically without attribution. The image depicts a shoeless samurai walking an armored cat. The samurai has a helmet with cat ears, and the image appears to be weathered and old, perhaps dating back to Medieval Japan.
In reality, the paint is the creation of Japanese artist Tetsuya Noguchi, whose specialty is to depict samurai in bizarre, often comic situations.
He appears to have mastered traditional techniques to create highly-detailed replica armor that would not be out of place in a museum.
Writing for web magazine artscape Japan, which covers Japan's art scene, Alan Gleason dubbed the style “samurai surrealism”. He explains: ''Every few years an artist gains cachet with pictures of hamburger-munching geishas and the like, painted in the fashion of ukiyoe or Nihonga. Though the gimmick is fun the first time, after a while it gets pretty predictable — good for a laugh or two, but hardly the trenchant commentary on “traditional vs. modern” that the artist usually proclaims it to be. The best practitioners of this genre (Masami Teraoka comes to mind) make it work not because of the obvious satire, but because of their mastery of the classical art form used to set up the spoof. And once in a while the artist's technique is so exquisite that it elevates the work entirely out of the realm of parody, however droll the subject matter. Tetsuya Noguchi's work is just such an example.''

Catherine has titanium for spine, I want her to stand her ground and shut the access permanently. What can the press do? They've done the worst so anything after this is mere child's play for her. Prince Philip adored Catherine and I know he had imparted the most steely, valuable lessons of royal life that he had faced to her. The amount of humiliations Prince Philip went through isn't small in scale and he fought back like a true gangster 😂 Wait till the Catherine the Phoenix rises ❤
I agree.
Social media often makes the mistake of assuming someone who's quiet or content to follow, like Kate is, is a total pushover and that couldn't be more wrong. For so many of us, silence is our strength. We know that keeping our head down and carrying on to tomorrow in spite of today puts us one step closer to our goal and everything we want.
That's the problem with social media. It's an echo chamber of all the loudest people screaming "my way" at each other. They don't allow space for the quieter people to participate and when a quieter person wants to say something, they're bullied out of the conversation.
More people see Kate for the strength that she has and the strength that she is than the denizens of social media recognize. What you see on social media isn't reality. It's like election polling/surveys here in the US - when our media does those Candidate vs Candidate polls to try and predict election results, they're only talking to people who already know who they're voting for. That's why the polling never matches the actual results on Election Night.
Social media is the same way. It's a small representative sampling of a niche group of people who care very passionately one way or the other about a specific issue.
So yeah. Catherine the Phoenix is going to shock the hell out of everyone when she rises. And everyone who's currently pouring gasoline on the fires to smoke her out are going to be all "I knew she had it in her this whole time, you go girl!" supportive because they want the money she'll make them.

Astrological Predictions I Wrote Down Last Year Which Are Still Relevant- and will continue to be!
Tumblr media
Note: I'm not here to spread fear and anxiety. Bad aspects do not exist. Our lives and the way the Art Of Astrology is expressed in our reality is a mix of different colours and vibrations. These predictions have been made with my own personal way of interpretation so please don't ask how I came up with some things. Don't drive yourself crazy trying to see the "mechanics" and "practical details" behind the predictions, simply read them and see if intuitively you vibe with them. Keep in mind these are written in a "personal notes" style so it is a tiny bit chaotic!
A year ago I did not post any content about astrology and tarot online, at least at this scale. Posting these personal observations is not a way fro me to "toot-my-own-horn". I'm actually quite skeptical about Astrology's capacity to "predict" but right now, looking at those notes it is apparent that most of those things have already manifested or are beginning to take form in our physical reality.
Enjoy and let me know what your thoughts are about what's coming.
2023 MAJOR ASPECTS
Pluto In Aquarius (23/3/2023, 3 months and then again in 2024): 20 year cycle, society, tech, consciousness, innovation on STEROIDS, last time 795,819, 1781 -> discovery of uranus, islamic/arab domination in north africa, fall and rise of dynasties in europe (foundations of europe as we know it now, al-Khwarizmi founded the field of algebra
Saturn In Pisces (7/3/2023, 26 february, may 2 2026): structuring the "unstructureable"
Jupiter In Taurus (16/5/2023-25/5/2024): wisdom of nature, stay ready/still, green
17/7/2023 -> N.Node in Aries/S.Node in Libra: love-war, Ares-Aphrodite, war between the feminine and the masculine. Fall of red pill and radical feminism, individual vs parrtnership.
Where Jupiter goes, Saturn follows. Dune, The Hermit energy. In the past few years with Jupiter in Pisces and Aries disillusionment was IN! Fights through screens (Aries), were just another day. Saturn clears the way after Jupiter's orgy. Dreams NEED a practical use (note from now : we have this whole hustling culture thing of set goals and be practical, we are basically trying to give structure to our dreams and create a step by step path to our vision). Example: astrology, NFTs and crypto, drugs, manifestation, art -> how are they contributing to our society and the betterment of it? Dissolving-then Forming-> identifying, dreaming-act/plan -> success. Only through the loss of individual power we realize we are nothing without a link to the rest of "life". Submitting to something greater/ fear (misty) of something destroying us or confronting external life. Sacrifice/Servitude. Who are you when stripped away from the world? (prison): stripped off the matrix/network, inner contemplation, power to serve to experience unity, science+spirituality meeting. loneliness + isolation = going deeper within, monk mode. developing a conscious ego. Information utilized/weaponized to help/guide the masses. Increasing consciousness and broadening the mind. We are realizing we are experiencing the "shadow" not the "idea" (Plato/Jung/archetypes)/Antigone-> divine law / human law/ loss of faith and search dor a new framework of values. Discipline in meditation, yoga driven towards God. Fight between atheism+spiritualism/nihilism+purpose. Turning inside because you lost faith, there you will find God and meaning. The form has outlived its usefulness -> conflict with the status quo and law. No church in the wild/godless. Saturn's death by Jupiter (taurus = structure).
Transformation of rules, social norms, ideas of humanity and how we use science+technology to manifest those ideas. Social + technological REVOLUTION. Renaissance. Turning to humanitarian, liberal arts/spreading knowledge-teaching. Astronomical discoveries, vaccines/antibiotics(shortages?), innovations in trade, change in the way religions and churches are structured as well as other organizations. More open. Blockchain. "Anonymity" but transparency. 48 laws of power, the prince. philosophy-> utilitarian/kant/pure reason. "how to maximize happiness for the majority. streamlined techniques. Pluto in Aquarius will bring the desire to reform. After 2044 these changes will be established. Everything will be brought to the surface. going deep and facing demons. PROMETHEUS MYTH , FIRE -> DARK SIDE OF TECH (note: AI). decentralised internet, open sourcing, energy. YOU CAN'T REACH GOD THROUGH TECHNOLOGY/CAN YOU? Grid failures+extreme weather. Internet cables connecting countries -> separation from WEB -> Who are we? power over...= domination / power with...= networks Pluto -> Πλούτος, abundance but can turn to greed -> eruption -> realizations. Society = individuals -> change= self change!
Society is going to turn its hopes, wishes , knowledge, resources and tech powers towards abundance and sustainability. Physical environment = abundance. I'm seeing a rise in holistic+cyclical approaches, natural medicine and art expression close to natural processes. Expect movement from big cities to the countryside and creation of luxury reatreats/hotels close to nature-sustainable.

Hey, Hun! I would like to see posts on your opinion on D-1 & D-9 chart. Differences between both charts yet how, they're related. Thank you. 😊🙏
Hey dear! ❤💫
I would randomly share what I know about D1 and D9 here:
D1/rasi chart is used for all kinds of general interpretations and D9 is a part of D1 that is specifically used to make interpretations on the person's marriage life and prosperity. D9 is a rather deeper insight about a person and their transformation in life than being just a tool in marriage matching.
D9 is said to be more prominent in the later stages of an individual or the second part of their life which basically matches with the universal marriage age group. It's because D1 is the reality we live in, D9 is our actual inner being, more like a subconscious mind. We mature and unleash our inner self when we grow older, we tend to try fitting in when we are younger.
We wouldn't be able to differentiate between what we think we want vs what we actually want, what we think we are vs what we actually are, these are the differences between D1 and D9. We explore ourselves and find that the only way out is IN. That's why D9 is said to be activated in the second part of a person's life.
(This is my perspective and NOT an actual thing from any books I know of, so you can ignore this thought if it doesn't resonate with you)
Coming to ACTUAL astrology part of D9, few points to note:
D9 is majorily used to find out the actual strength of the planets in D1 chart. If some planet is strong in D1 but becomes weak in D9, the favorable results cannot take place. Also, drishti or planetary aspects DOES NOT apply to D9 or any other divisional charts. Planetary aspects are only for D1 charts. D9 should be read along with D1, it should NOT be considered as an individual chart to make predictions. Any predictions you pick up from D1, the accuracy of that is dependent on the analysis of same placement in D9 chart. There are two important terms to remember when it comes to reading between D1 and D9 charts, to check the strength of planet-
1.Bhavottama- Planet in same HOUSE NUMBER in both D1 and D9. Ex: Sun in 5H in D1 and Sun in 5H in D9 regardless of any change of ascendants between the two charts.
2. Vargottama- Planet in same ZODIAC SIGN in both D1 and D9.
Vargottama is said to be more auspicious and stronger than bhavottama but if both are present, the individual will attain positive results of the planets in their planetary periods and during the second half of their life. Important point to note is that these two things must happen either in the Kendra (1,4,7,10) or Trikona (1,5,9) houses and preferably planets should not be present in enemy signs.
Btw thank you for asking this thought provoking question dear! 💕
Let's learn and grow together! 🤗💋
With Love-N ❤💫

Tarot PAC: OPPOSITES ATTRACT 😳 You VS Your Next SO 🍒 | Cute And Innocent 🍑 Or Mysterious/Sensuous 🍓
Tumblr media
The setup: You stay over with your crush for the first time and you both get a little *closer* than expected. Opposites attract but which one are you? And what will happen next?
🌸 aimed at your current crush/next encounter with someone you like
🌸 This is just for fun. I can't predict anything but hey, it's fun to dream
🌸 18+ mature themes although more cute/coy than anything, kinda sexy 🌺 but not full on sexy ♥️
🌸 Take what resonates, leave the rest!
🌸 G/N pronouns
Pile 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You stay over at their house, a cute but cluttered apartment in a big city. As the evening draws on, you can see neon lights and twinkling stars through the small window. They are more experienced than you but they intertwine their fingers with yours and softly kiss your neck. The bed is unmade, they pull you under the covers and you start cuddling.
You were kinda scared to be alone with them, because they seemed so much more sophisticated and self assured than you. Yet the longer the two of you spend in each others arms, the more you begin to see them reveal a softer side.
In some ways you begin to act like a confidant. Despite the fact they may have a confident exterior, alone with you they open up and reveal their hopes, dreams, and fears.
You may have been insecure physically if you picked this pile. But a partner who is more confident and experienced helps you come out of your shell. You may be a pisces, cancer, virgo, libra, or capricorn. You may also have saturn in the fifth or seventh house or alternatively the moon in the fifth, seventh, or eighth, making you extraordinarily sensitive romantically. In this way you manage to take your partner back in time to when they were first dating. In this way your relationship may end up more like a permanent honeymoon phase. I'm seeing someone who may possibly want to make out to music or take you beautiful places - amazing sights, romantic hideaways, or underneath the stars.

You are more experienced than them! You're probably an aries, pisces, scorpio, or leo, or possibly a libra or sagittarius. Either way, you know this city like the back of your hand, while they've just moved there.
The first night you spend together it on and off, hot and cold. They sorta want you but don't want to admit their feelings. They're also pretty shy. The two of you bond over romance. You're a hooeless romantic yet so are they. Their dreams and fantasies are just as intense as yours, they just haven't played out on reality. You slip your arms through the sleeves of their hoodie and gently begin to carress their skin. The turn their head to you and the two of you kiss. Lots of tension and passion. You didn't realise someone so innocent could make your skin flush like this.
They're shy but they can't sleep. The two of you end up making out slowly. You never thought that slowing down like this could be so hot but you grow to love the way they curl their body into you as they want more.
In some ways that evening is the beginning of a deeper relatuonship. You guys are on and off yet ultimately you keep going back to them because of the way they teach you how to stop and smell the flowers. Life seems more relaxed and carefree when you are with them and love is gentler and more intimate. It's not what you thought you would want, but deep down, it moves you somewhere.

You both realise how much you want each other. But they definitely want you faster. Or do they? Slowly you feel your temperature begin to rise as you feel their body next to yours. They begin to run their fingers through your hair and all of a sudden you realise the feelings you have had.
You guys haven't been dating for long. But the feelings are so intense they might have come from a much greater period of time. You can't believe how lucky you are. Yet reality dawns this night as the two of you lie there as the clock passes the early hours of the morning. Neither of you can sleep. You make out this night or maybe more. But the fact is that when you wake you realise this is SERIOUS.
This is the kind of relationship where both of you get totally addicted to each other. You want each other SO BAD and yet there is so much chemistry and tension. You're almost scared as to how intense it is and you don't know what else there may be underneath the surface. Nevertheless it is a process of exploration for both of you. But for now you know you are immediately so HOT every time you see them and the look in their eye means you know you will be spending another night together 🌺🍓🍒

What is so special about Takaba that can made him cause the downfall of Kenjaku? Sorry if it's a dumb ask. I was so shock when it really is the end for Kenjaku.....
Also, if Takaba vs Sukuna, can you imagine the outcome? Like, personally, I think the fight will end < 5 seconds......🤣
I actually think the fight between Sukuna and Takaba would be quite long, assuming neither of them loses interest halfway through. Takaba isn't gonna kill Sukuna, just (unintentionally) wear down his consciousness and soul, while Sukuna also can't hurt Takaba. The only thing that might hurt Takaba is the world-bisecting Dismantle and I'm not even sure about that. This Dismantle cuts existence, but Takaba's cursed technique can alter reality, so would this cut be effective or also subject to Comedian? Anyway, I think a fight between them would be a very pointless back-and-forth.
Now as for why Takaba is so special: in short, he is exactly what Kenjaku had been looking for, what they wanted deep down and being led to indulge in that and allow to emotionally connect with someone else is what made them vulnerable to Yuuta's attack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All Kenjaku wants is entertainment, discovering new things and also sharing them with others, even if or especially when those people disagree with them. Before the fight started, Kenjaku was kind of lost. They achieved their life-long goal of capturing Tengen, the merger should be imminent, but they discovered that that won't give them Tengen's attention either and on top of that, they essentially lost their oldest friend. Even if Tengen wanted to talk back, by being under Kenjaku's control she lost all will and that is boring. She stopped being an equal.
So the person Kenjaku strived against and who they did all this for is gone. On top of that the Culling Game turned out less exciting than they thought. Everything was quite predictable and there wasn't as much chaos as they had hoped. Even the foreign nations invading and Sukuna switching vessels was quite predictable from Kenjaku's point of view. All they could do was go through the colonies and kill the remaining players to start the merger of Tengen and the Japanese population in hopes that at least that will be interesting to witness. Throughout all that they were still looking for someone who could fill that void their dwindling number of friends caused (mainly Tengen).
That's when Takaba shows up and disrupts all that, already drawing Kenjaku's attention through his extra-ordinary cursed technique.
Tumblr media
Takaba is there with the stated purpose to steal the show and Kenjaku agrees with him because this kind of distraction is exactly what they were looking for. A fun little side project of trying to figure out this clown. The main difference between Kenjaku and Sukuna is that Kenjaku entered this fight with the will to change and take in new perspectives, very unlike Sukuna, who currently makes it his job to try to make Yuuji bend to his worldview. Takaba was so effective on Kenjaku because Kenjaku was willing to engage with him from the beginning and was open to whatever insanity Takaba suggested because things were getting quite boring anyway, so why not. He peeked their curiosity.
Kenjaku is searching for entertainment and Takaba is willing to give that to them. He proposes to find something more interesting/funny for Kenjaku than the merger and Kenjaku even says they might be willing to let go of their merger plan if he succeeds. Even when they just met, Kenjaku was willing to consider his perspective because they were unsatisfied with how their current plan was turning out. All Kenjaku wants is something unexpected and that is what they got in their fight against Takaba.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following "fight" they continue to have this open perspective for Takaba's actions. Any time things get a little too personal or they feel his technique trying to influence them, they shut down, but they stay open to his spoken suggestions. When he declares he will make them laugh so hard they will puke up their stomach they are entertained and even the promise of a good one-liner gets them excited.
Which is something I really appreciated about this fight, it showed us who Kenjaku is when they aren't in villain mode. They are quite normal, bit wacky, but most importantly very human and that's the part Takaba brought out of them through their shared love for comedy. And that is what made them lose the fight. They stopped thinking about their insane merger plan, Sukuna's fight, the people they still needed to kill and essentially just "relaxed" and were able to be themselves. Playing around with Takaba's reality-bending technique is what made them actually enjoy the Culling Game, not the prospect of the merger or the bloodshed or whatever. Simply put, Takaba gave them something they didn't experience for hundreds of years because their fixation on Tengen and consequent plan always took precedent. Through that fixation Kenjaku lost what actually made them happy and excited, but they were too far gone to turn back.
Takaba brought that back through their comedy show. The comedy show is essentially all Kenjaku is looking for, in a very ordinary setting. It is a quick exchange of ideas and thought experiments. Since the show was improvised, both had to think on their feet and adapt to each other. They both surprise each other and have to adjust to the new scenarios. It's unpredictable due to the other person's input. Both being able to keep up and build on what the other offered is what made Kenjaku enjoy the experience. It's not just Kenjaku pushing things forward, but a team effort and simply through that they have less control over the process. That goes back to what Kenjaku said in Shibuya, about wanting to create something that exceeded their own expectations and that they have no control over. This isn't applied to people, curses or cursed energy, but I think it is still what this all comes down to and exactly that it is so ordinary compared to what Kenjaku previously stated they were searching for in the Death Paintings for example is what's important here, I think.
Tumblr media
The comedy show was like the illusions they threw at each other before, just in a more grounded setting. Which showed us that Kenjaku doesn't need complex techniques or world shattering events to have fun, be entertained or intrigued. Being able to be themselves and goofing around with someone else who is exactly on their insane wavelength was enough. Comes back to highlighting Kenjaku's humanity beneath all those insane and cruel plans.
Kenjaku wasn't willing to quite accept what Takaba provided them throughout the fight either, holding very desperately on to their carefully curated and collected image that allowed them to go through with their 5D chess plan. Takaba tried to pry them away from that with his antics, but they resisted instinctively. But when they determined the scenario (the comedy show) and there was no emotional manipulation present through Takaba's technique, they ended up having the most fun. They were concentrated on their skits with Takaba, essentially indulging in what they claimed to be their determining factors for friendship and they both didn't want any interruptions to that little bubble they created, which was when Yuuta pried on that emotional vulnerability Kenjaku showed.
So you could say Takaba manages to involve Kenjaku personally and worked through all those defences to pry out Kenjaku's true character. I don't mean this in a "Kenjaku is actually a pure little bean" way, I think they always had a very morbid humour and their curiosity and search for entertainment eventually became obsessive. Likely influenced by their split from Tengen. Tengen seemed to have been the person Kenjaku was most fixated on initially and who they relied on for friendship, attention, fun and exchange of ideas. And when eventually they didn't get that anymore, they became forceful. Takaba instinctively tapped into that original need, since he himself is also very desperate for connection, validation and someone who he can have fun with and indulge in his passions with. They are very similar in that regard and that was why they hit it off so well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kenjaku's last words summarize it pretty well. They echo what Kenjaku realized during their fight with Takaba, except here they don't deny that feeling and there is no cursed technique forcing them to say this. It is unfortunate that they had to tap out before seeing the result of the merger themselves, but they got what they had actually been looking for. Their time with Takaba was one of the most entertaining things they experienced in their life and going out on that high-note makes their death less painful. The base need for fun with someone who doesn't bore them was fulfilled, Takaba managed to do what he initially set out to do at the beginning of the fight.
Kenjaku still put everything in place for the merger to be carried out, but I think what's important here is the focus of their actions. All they ensure is that Tengen won't die with them and that Sukuna has the means to start the merger if he wants to. They don't force him however, in the end it is still up to Sukuna to decide what should happen and that unpredictability is what Kenjaku actually enjoys. Something they can't control. It is unfortunate that they won't get to see it, but that seems to be alright with them. The way I interpret their last words is that they had their fun at the end of their life and now it is up to Yuuta, Sukuna & Co. to find their own deadly entertainment.
So essentially it all came down to Takaba matching Kenjaku's particular brand of insanity, tapping into their special interest and he also showed up at a time when Kenjaku was already questioning their decisions and was very desperate for meaningful company. Then Yuuta showed up and burst that bubble.
Overall, I think it is actually a very good end for Kenjaku because it showed us who Kenjaku is at their core and how they might have initially started out before the fixation on Tengen and the merger took over their life. As The Mastermind and main villain Kenjaku is in control, but by going back to the basic need for companionship and simple entertainment Kenjaku made themselves vulnerable. Indulging in these attachments (ones Sukuna claims to not have btw) they lost. Plays into the theme of strength=loneliness and consequently emotional attachments bring "weakness" as we also often see with Yuuji.
The timing of Kenjaku's death is bad, especially because we haven't gotten any meaningful interactions between the main villain and main character, who are also parent and child. Quite the missed opportunity...and well, having Yuuta do the beheading didn't fit there either, since he's completely removed from all that. I have to say though, chapter 249 made me like Kenjaku's death a lot more. It doesn't even really feel like a defeat because the main threat isn't gone and Kenjaku went out feeling satisfied with how things went. The experiences they had with Takaba feel like a good end for them, it just came too early in the story.

Oshi no Ko 143 Reaction
This was a fun chapter. Ruby getting aggressive finally forcing Aqua to stop ignoring the problems in their relationship that have been simmering for 20 chaps now and actually have a conversation that puts it all out in the open. They're mostly saying stuff I predicted in advance, but some of it took me by surprise.
One bit that made me stand up and !!! was this page:
Tumblr media
I thought I was doing something interesting when I compared Ruby's feelings towards Gorou to Aqua's feelings about Ai in my last two analyses but she just came out and said it directly on page, haha. I feel pretty validated.
I still stand behind most of what I wrote last week after this chapter. Ruby is desperately trying to make this a romance, but her best pitch is "I care about you in the same way we cared about idols in our past lives. Parasocially and without regard for the actual person, because I need to put somebody on an idealized pedestal or else I'll kill myself. This is what romance is, right?" Girl with so so so many issues, I love her.
The one thing that did really take me by surprise was the bit where she listed off Aqua's flaws as a person. In the past I assumed that Ruby was intentionally ignoring these flaws and making up a version of Aqua that didn't exist in her head. The way in her mind he's drawn like a romance hero and how she makes excuses for all the things she took issue with before lead me to believe she was intentionally distancing "Gorou, her idol" from "Aqua, the person, her brother" in her head. I'm not sure how to square this knowledge with the way she is (textually, now!) putting him on a pedestal. If I had to guess, I would think she actually is aware of who Aqua is as a person - she was friends with him as Gorou before and siblings for 18 years, she should know him better than anybody - but is intentionally separating this knowledge from the figure she is idolizing, because she needs to keep ahold of something for her mental stability.
I'm reminded of an analysis post of OnK ep 1 I read on tumblr almost a year ago, I forget who posted it so I can't properly credit it but it's not my own thoughts. (if anybody else remembers it please let me know so I can link it!) They contrasted Gorou's parasocial fan relationship with Ai to Ryosuke, the stalker who killed him: both put were fans of Ai, the Idol, but when confronted with the reality that she was more than an idol, that she had relationships and would have children, Gorou decided that the health and happiness of Ai the person was more important than his image of Ai the Idol, and did his best as a doctor to help her, while Ryosuke's reaction to having his image of the Idol shattered was to try and destroy Ai the person. The analysis put forth the idea that this was contrasting healthy vs unhealthy methods of being a fan - that there's nothing wrong with being a fan of someone, necessarily, but you have to keep in mind that you aren't entitled to anything about them, and there's always a real person underneath the performance.
I didn't fully agree with it - in my post about how the series portrays different kinds of love I talked about how it came down very harshly on dishonest and idolizing love - but I did think it was very interesting (obviously as I still remember it almost a year later). Anyway Ruby's approach to Aqua this chapter made me think of that a lot. She makes a big deal out of how Aqua is her idol, their relationship is idol/fan, and she can ignore all his flaws - but at the same time she points out that she does actually know what those flaws are. It puts her in something of a strange position. What would she do if her image of The Doctor, Her Idol, no longer existed, and she was left with just Aqua? Would she care for the person, or be mad at losing the illusion? According to this chapter she fits into neither of those, she chooses to pretend that the illusion still exists even while staring directly at the reality. Ruby seems aware that she is essentially using the idea of the doctor as a coping mechanism, but doesn't want to admit that this desire is directly in tension with the idea about caring about Aqua as a person, romantically or otherwise.
As for Aqua, it's great that he's finally being a little honest with his emotions and feelings after so long, to the one person who is really able to understand the context.
Tumblr media
However, I think he's still holding a lot back, especially in the latter half of the chapter, because there are things he doesn't feel that he can say to Ruby, specifically about their relationship. He seems hesitant to directly tell Ruby that he can't be her lover or her idol, he can only be himself - even when he tries to tell her that he can't be the person he was she just brushes it off - and I think with how Ruby's mental health is holding on by a thread he is unwilling to do anything to jeopardize it, even if it means accepting the spot on her pedestal.
My read of the relationship between Gorou and Sarina 22 years ago was that they were genuine friends at the time. Regardless of difference in age and position they were both socially isolated people who found one person they felt they could be honest and open with. This makes their current relationship even sadder - Ruby has twisted the memory of their old friendship into dreams of romance and idolatry to fuel the desire to live one more day. Aqua, who in his last life would have been willing to do almost anything to get her to keep living, is forced to cut away his own relationship to her, both last life friend and current life brother, because being dishonest - being an idol - is the only way he can see to keep her alive and healthy. Both have already cut away most of their other bonds for the sake of the revenge plan, and now they can't even be fully honest with each other. Very tragic stuff.
All in all I really really liked this chapter. The interactions between Ruby and Aqua has always been multiple layers of relationships and mindsets existing on top of one another, and that just makes it super interesting for me. I love it whenever that leads to character tension. They've been friends and siblings and idols and all of that has to coexist, its a very unique kind of character writing that Oshi no Ko does well and I don't see very often and makes me care for the series a lot. I think I have a much more positive view of this arc than most of the fandom because the trainwreck of their relationship is one of the series highlights to me, so chapters like this, where exactly how bad their mindsets have gotten are placed as the main focus, are some of my favorite story beats.
I know there's a lot of negativity about this chap but I'm having a good time over here in my corner. Not sure if it's because I've been letting my thoughts about the series out in posts a lot more recently or because I liked this specific chapter a lot but this is definitely most I've been invested in the series for a while now. I think I was letting the Discourse kind of sour things for me and now I have mentally exorcised it from my mind.

BNHA 413 - some thoughts
I kind of dislike trying to make Star now somehow important by creating a crack to the "sad child"
I definitely HATE the idea of "Tenko" being an actual innocent ghost child who can be conveniently saved without Deku having a discussion with Tomura and dealing with him directly
I don't mind OFA being passed, but for the love of everything, why can't it be Deku's own initiative? Why does it have to come from Kudou?
My long-term gripe with the vestiges is fully demonstrated in this chapter. These dead people have no dynamic with Deku or with each other. It's just hollow to have "self-sacrifice" from a ghost who was already dead. (With Kudou being this important, I do wonder if the bak-u-go theories were correct, but HK changed his mind.)
I guess we can now predict all the vestiges getting lobbed over to dig Tenko out of the hole. I'm pretty sure at least Nana and All Might will go, because at least they have a connection to the "sad child". and will have some kind of emotional parting from Deku.
I am really really hoping that this fight won't be just won by the vestiges fully cutting out the need for Deku to get through to Tomura. That would make his fight worse than both Toga-Ochako and Dabi vs Todo-fam, which both needed to face their villain in their current reality.
So I'm hoping for one of two things:
Child Tenko is dug out, but he's like Tomura says is not a separate entity, but Tomura himself and to demonstrate that, he'll decay the vestiges. (They have no good narrative role / space, so might as well be sacrificed for some tension and a final test of faith that Deku will keep smashing the lid even when he's lost something he treasures).
Child Tenko crack is a booby trap set up by AFO and the "trump card" he mentioned to lure OFA out. So again, it would be somehow an attempt failing, but at least Tomura would get a chance to talk to Nana and see All Might vestige put everything on the line to try to save his child self that nobody reached out to. And that could prepare the ground for a conversation with Deku.
