everyone knows how the kotlc economy is messed up but i know how to fix it without really changing cannon, by assuming Della and Fitz are unreliable narrators when it comes to how their world works because they grew up in noblity

only nobles get birth funds, but they tell themselves and their kids that everyone does so they don’t feel guilty, and because Della was the one to tell us about the birth funds it was just her brain washing from growing up in nobility talking

Nobles are the only ones with Gnomes living at their houses, otherwise they work at or own their own shops in the lost cities

nobles lose their birth funds by getting a bad match/match fail, or by being talentless, on top of that children of bad matches/match fails never get birth funds even if they join noblity, or are directly descendants discouraging those things more than they where already

there is a working class (the nobles just like to pretend it does exist) that works in mysterum and they live in neighborhoods outside of the city that the council likes to pretend don’t exist as well so they are very rundown

Working class families still discourage getting bad matches because if they marry someone from a noble family, weather that person works for the council or not they will still will have access to their birth fund

on top of that bad matches have to worry about medical malpractice, fake reports of crimes, and being the scape goat for nobles mistakes, which most working class families don’t have to deal with.

working class kids don’t get a birth fund even if they do join nobility, unless strings are pulled, but if they marry a good match and their spouse is also a noble their child will get a birth fund

both the working class and the nobility get taxed, because no society can function without taxes, and the taxes are very high to pay for the birth funds* which keeps the working class poor and the nobility rich

the working class can’t afford the same fancy things and houses that the nobility can, and while the working class tends to make the products the nobility can buy, they can’t afford that much themselves, they need cheaper products to buy and rely on.

there are factories in the neutral territories that the banished can work at for exchange for necessities, the working environment is awful but so are all the other options for getting necessities in the neutral territories so they have a large supply of workers,

the products the factories produce go to the shops that the working class buy from because they are cheaper, even though they know that the factories are mistreating their workers, they don’t have a choice because there’s no other option for them. them working class makes the products the noble use and so on and so fourth

*there’s this saying in my economics book “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” it means the money always comes from somewhere and that somewhere is the people

mythal, flemeth, or flemythal?

my opinions on this incredibly complicated woman. nothing here is like... hard canon i can firmly prove, i'm just extrapolating based on what we see (mostly in dai tbf)

i don't even have a super strong read on what her deal is, these are just some of the thoughts i'm having about her tonight

note: this is NOT character hate and if u add character hate to this post you WILL get blocked. but i'm not softening her either - she is pretty fucked up and i'm not going to ignore that

also i've read none of the books/comics/other supplementary material, so this is based off of in-game lore only

cws: abuse

flemeth and mythal

flemeth: a (human?) woman who was betrayed, whose love was killed

mythal: an elvhen woman, an evanuris, who was killed by her family

when mythal was killed she found her way to flemeth because they were similar. something in flemeth drew mythal to her. there's a lot of options here, although i tend to think it's their shared personal histories and experiences that drew them together, particularly their shared pain. they bonded in some way, some physical manner of becoming one, inseparable, inexorably connected

early on, they might have been more distinct. sharing a body, but still with an individualized sense of self. however, i believe that over time that separation became smoothed, blurred. it's like how very wounded people can sometimes come together and find resonance in their shared experiences, a sense of familiarity, and let it go too far. into the territory of codependence, but so extremely literal in this case

maintaining their body

i'm not sure how they manage this. the way i see it, there are two main options, with a lot of branching details:

body hopping through her daughters, or

literally any other way

#1 is of course possible, but i don't tend to lend it a lot of credence. but let's say it's true, and that what flemythal tells morrigan in the fade is true, that the hosts need to be willing. in that case, her daughters - throughout centuries - would have had to consent to having their selves taken over to host their very complicated mom. i can buy that some of them would have consented; maybe flemythal twisted them into feeling like they had to perform a function, that they had a fate, a destiny, and then revealed what it was. but all of them?

perhaps some did deny her. maybe she forced them to accept - threatened their loved ones, maybe - or else gave them up and started again with a new child. but it's still a lot of finding a new body throughout a massive period of time. it just doesn't feel very likely to me

so, that brings us to option #2. there are many particular ways this could go - the men she brought home and drained, perhaps they sustained her single body, flemeth's original body, that she has always worn. perhaps she uses blood magic, or elvhen magic, or elvhen technology, or- like there are a LOT of possibilities

but i also think #2 is more likely because that would mean the grimoire was a total lie. and why would she lie to morrigan in that way? perhaps because morrigan was curious, intelligent, inquisitive, and flemythal had to throw her off the truth? so she provided a horrific lie, let morrigan "discover" it, let her live in that horror, all the while it just... concealed how she actually continued her existence. give morrigan an answer that was appropriately awful and horrifying so she'd think she found the truth, because it fit what she thought she knew of her mother. and if she found her answer, then she'd stop looking for the real answer

that feels more in line with flemythal's character. she's very much a chessmaster, positioning people throughout the centuries. which leads me to my next point...

flemythal and feelings

first off, i think that both flemeth and mythal have suffered abuse at the hands of people they lived with, perhaps people they loved. i think in both cases that led them to being closed-off, cynical, and self-centered

in the case of body-hopping, i think she would have developed a very thick skin regarding her children which would limit - or even eliminate - any real feelings she might have had for them. if she doesn't body-hop, i still think she'd be tempted to keep herself apart, and in either case she enacts some of the abuse she(/they) were subject to

in the body-hopping scenario, she's used so many of her daughters, in some manner or other. but in both scenarios, she's existed so far beyond a normal mortal lifespan. if she did care about people, she'd inevitably see them die. again and again and again

both mythal and flemeth were abused by the people around them (in mythal's case she was literally killed by her family - the fact that it didn't take is intriguing, but doesn't lessen what they tried to do to her or the emotional toll it would take)

so all this is to say... i don't think she'd really care about mortals. maybe she did once, maybe not; maybe she's too mired in her pain and anger to care about anyone else, or maybe she's lost too many people she did care about and hardened herself to avoid more suffering

but yeah, idk if she cares about morrigan, or about kieran, or even necessarily about solas, although with him if she's scared of losing the people she cares for, he's safe. but if she's just closed off, then it wouldn't matter that he's (possibly/presumably?) immortal as well

she fascinates me. we know so little that's absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt true about her - and we know that some of what was presented in-game as truth turned out to NOT be. flemythal is keeping secrets. she always has been

and final note: the line to morrigan about a willing host, about her never being in any danger from flemythal... that could've been her referencing her own act of coming together. perhaps the only willing host in their entire joint history was flemeth herself

I would love to know about the process by which you were diagnosed as autistic. I think I am, I've thought it for years...but the GP doesn't want to know (as I'm on the surface a functioning woman with a job and a family and there isn't enough "evidence") and I can't afford private assessment.

I appreciate the label in itself is not everything but I need some resolution as to what is wrong with me beyond the fluffy psychology labels (high functioning anxiety, highly sensitive person)

Obviously understand if you don't want to go into it...but it would help me understand if I need to start saving....

oh sure; so, this was getting on for 10 years ago now, obviously but it was, at the time, a fairly drawn-out process of getting a referral from a GP and then a series of assessments, involving yourself and family members (if you had relevant family members to testify about your behaviour as a child etc - I didn't take this option up as aside from anything else it was becoming screamingly obvious I was autistic from the tests on me)

there was various diagnostic processes, including an initial multiple choice quiz basically that felt way too general but then they started drilling in to bits of it. which I guess makes sense because otherwise it's like [flops entire brain onto desk like a load of focaccia dough out a tupperware] analyse this fuckos.

they talked quite a lot about how I coped with school (an additional complication for me due to having been raised by wolves/not in school very long) and how I understood social interactions. at the time my explanation for why I seemed to have quite a lot of empathy and depth of understanding was that there'd been some volatile situations I'd been in that had required me to become very sensitised to the moods and behaviours of other people around me in order to try to manage the situation or avoid a sudden flare up. and then of course I was a little awkward socially because I'd ended up in a bit of a virgin suicides thing where I didn't get to socialise much as a teenager before I went to university and had been a quiet child.

all of that was still true, as was the fact that then (like now) I tended to use alcohol as a social crutch which is a fairly common autistic masking thing in the late diagnosed. I'd actually totally suppressed all cues like environmental discomfort because I'd just dissociate instead until I think I may have spent like, a genuinely significant proportion of my life before my thirties dissociating and that probably explains a few other things.

they obviously had some additional explanations for me, which at the time was (and I think in the UK still is) called being two points off the highest score for asperger's syndrome. in the US and other places they don't call it that now because asperger was a nazi and honestly, pretty fucking horrifying that whole thing so: heads up I don't know why we still do that in the UK instead of calling it autism spectrum disorder or just autism but y'know. the UK.

the waiting list back then was about a year for the NHS in London (I ended up getting diagnosed at the Maudsley) and it now looks to be a lot longer than that, more like three years or longer. which is, I am afraid, bad news; I believe you can go private and that it's not prohibitively expensive in the sense it's like, used car money not new car money, as far as I know but it's not a process I've done and I wouldn't be able to make any recommendations unfortunately. at the time when I was diagnosed I thought the whole thing was stupid and I obviously wasn't autistic so wasn't in a hurry.

in retrospect this is obviously very, very funny because not only am autistic but like the most autistic but oh well that's what happens when the only depictions of autism you've ever seen are people totally unlike you etc.

sorry not to be more help, anon - I hope you can find a way to make more sense of your brain.

it can be helpful to find out about yourself and to stop berating yourself for the ways your brain is wired. sometimes we need to run things slightly differently in order to make them work and being given a map (or some suggested maps, at least) to try to find those routes is a lot less frustrating than wondering why the fuck it doesn't work the way it's supposed to. feel free to reach out if you just wanna talk Seemingly Nonstandard Brain Things.

As I am now 30 and apparently an Actual Adult and Twitter is exploding even more, I figured that before I get back to the last bit of ArtFight I'd do some Dolly Introductions because most of my characters exist in the form of very expensive, very large dolls rather than the far cheaper "just draw them" option.

This is because I have impulse control issues and just love these idiots so... Hey! LORE is below the page break, as well as their sculpts!

These are just the ones who are important in some way in the big ol' thing I have going on, there are MORE DOLLS. So many more dolls.

1. Callum Shelley - Dollshe David Kuncci - the man who made Frankie and his siblings. Married to Science and Science only; he's also very gay and very awkward, and so decided that his desire to be a father could only really be achieved through sewing a ton of bodies together and reanimating it using science and Arcane Shit. He's technically on the run, as Frankie was kinda made in a lab that was meant to be looking into ways to improve transplants and other slightly theoretical ideas rather than Maybe Magic Could Help Me Have A Child, but he's managed to embed himself into Harlan's weird little underworld and so they don't have to jump ship at a moment's notice anymore. He now lives in London, in one of the many buildings owned by the Twins- Harlan wrangled that, as it would be useful to have an actual doctor on standby, right?

2. Franklin "Frankie" Shelley - Ringdoll Frankenstein 2013 - Frankenstein's Monster if he was a mid-20s Horrorpunk Dirtbag with a heart of gold. Very family-oriented- it was him and his dad for a few years just after he was made and they're very close. Had a few wobbly times as he came to terms with Being A Bunch Of Corpse Parts and therefore not really being able to do stuff, but now they have a little niche he's having a good time. Would literally die for-

3. Poppi - Aimerai Scraps - a ragdoll that was brought to life via some fairly arcane shit. A literal cinnamonbun angel. Frankie's other half, and generally makes sure that Callum doesn't accidentally forget to eat while he's working on stuff. As she can't have children (she literally has no internal organs), she's also involved herself heavily in looking after Frankie's siblings.

4. Evelyn Shelley - Sugarble Night Miriam - Frankie's "little sister". She's about six and she's always going to be about six- she's a very sweet little kid, loves dolls and dressing up. She has that "Family Princess" confidence, and can often be found "making Frankie Pretty".

5. Valentine Shelley- 5StarDoll Aiden - Frankie's "little brother". Although he's technically younger than Evelyn, he's probably more akin to a 7/8 year old. He was made as a playmate for Evelyn as she was getting pretty lonely. Callum had honed his technique a little, hence Val not literally being blue like his siblings. He's always ready for some sort of adventure, but lets Evelyn take the lead.

6. Magdalen - Doll Chateau Oort -very old vampire. She's the tactician; although she's very powerful, she tends to direct her brother rather than get her hands dirty. She talks the most of the twins, but even that's not much. The twins function almost as one person, and are rarely far from each other.

7. Alasdair - Doll Chateau Cyril - also a very old vampire. He's Magdalen's muscle- if something threatened them, he'd be the one actually dealing with it. He barely speaks, but when he does it's generally something very important. The twins live in Highgate and do not appreciate any link between them and that Highgate Vampire business. Their home is a massive Victorian thing that has some minor glamours so it's not considered "the clearly haunted house".

8. Harlan Silver - Ringdoll K -puts the Whore in Victorian, he's here representing the Pansexual Slut Vampires. He's considered the "oldest son" to Magdalen and Alasdair, but his function is less as a child and more as their connection to the outside world. He brokers deals and access to the twins, sources... food for them if they don't feel like hunting and has shown them how to connect to the wifi about 5 billion times. He lives in a basement flat in London that would make any antiques dealer jealous. He also kinda has a... thing... with Callum, but it's less emotion and more mutual benefit.

9. Seraphine - Doll In Mind Marcellina - the precious baby daughter in the vampire family. She was brought to them by Harlan as a toddler in the late 1800s, and they have raised her the way they were raised. She is doted upon absolutely- however she's not as odd as the twins, mostly because Harlan has done his best to expose her to humanity and help her be as well-adjusted as an immortal creature can be. She's currently going through Vampire Puberty so she's spending a lot of time with Harlan because there's nothing more frustrating than having a teenage mood swing in front of the twins.

10. Siddiq "Sid" Shah and Noa Kim - Universedoll Tsukimi and iDoll Arnoah - long-term schoolfriends who grew up in the London Borough of Camden. They were both on the 'social misfit' side of things, and spent a lot of their time trading Stephen King paperbacks and watching crappy horror films, until they found a book at a car boot sale that was apparently an actual Grimoire of spells- and then their interest in witchcraft took off, and all that time speaking one language at home and another at school really helps when finding rituals that work. They describe their magic as "kinda like one of those buffet restaurants that serves, uh, everything? Like you can get pizza, curry and fish and chips if you want, but instead of getting food poisoning, you get results."

The two fell onto Harlan's radar fairly quickly because he's a nosy pest that lives pretty much opposite the little park where they do business. He's now got them "in" with the twins, and they're also the ones who managed to create Poppi. They're now pretty good friends with Frankie and Poppi, and are working on some Glamour spells because Frankie would really love to go to a gig at some point. Or even just to Nando's.

They often find themselves helping Callum, but mostly because he's a scientist at heart and although he's used magic before, he doesn't really... get it. They're also both on the twins' payroll, because witches are also very useful, and not as common as they used to be.

As I'm sure is readily apparent, I am weak for Simarkus. I cannot describe the depth of my disappointment when, all those years ago, I discovered Simon was actually not a romance option for Markus like I had expected after the first playthrough. I had no fandom involvement at all at the time, so I just had to wallow in my sadness.

And then my husband finally convinced me to try out fandom in September 2020, and I locked onto simarkus within a couple weeks. I've still not let them go, poor dears.

I would say they are my overall favorite DBH ship, and I do a considerable amount of projection onto the two of them. How I view their dynamic really depends on which universe we're talking about. In my primary canon-compliant, post-revolution universe, Simon tends to be either notably or extremely mentally unwell, and in these scenarios, Simon is highly reliant on Markus' support for not only his functioning but his safety as well. Markus effectively holds Simon's life in his hands, and in his typical Markus way, he cradles it with extraordinary gentleness and patience while simultaneously zealously fighting for the rights of his people, with varying levels of aggression and restraint. I enjoy playing with this duality in Markus' personality, especially when juxtaposed with Simon's persistent meekness (excluding, of course, the most extreme of situations where he has to be assertive to protect his loved ones).

I would be remiss to not mention my OC, Ivy, as she has become so fused with Simarkus in my mind that they can't exist independently of each other. This is not only because I love her to death but also because she adds an extra layer (or several) to the Simarkus dynamic that just feels right to me. Tossing a child into the mix really opens up opportunities for Simon's caregiver nature to shine. I tend to view his role in his relationship with Markus as more passive, allowing Markus to take the lead so to speak, but when a child is involved, he takes on a more active role within the family, as he is the expert and connects more readily with kids than Markus does (and especially so with Ivy for...tragic backstory reasons).

Okay, I'm gonna stop blathering here because we don't want me getting into the relationship dynamics in my fic The Sunset and the Night.

In conclusion, Simarkus yes.

Oh, no, absolutely not. Given the option, they would be perfectly content to remain within the Link for the majority of if not basically all of their existence. But needs must. They were deemed patient and old enough to handle Odo's nonesense, and in the interest of the child (Odo) and the Link as a whole, they went, and they endure the annoyances of travel and the discomfort of separation from the Link with grace most of the time, because they deem it necessary to do so.

The Founder has a tendency to forget that solids have needs/feelings/wants/etc. For example, Rivan will often be left on the floor or not offered a seat or whatever because he's serving his function and that's just how Vorta are. It's not malicious, but they're so very old and so very separated from the realities of life as a solid, that things just don't occur to them.

They support the Dominion without question, doubt, or wavering and will not accept anything that indicates anything but the inherent superiority of Founders and the Dominion. It's frustrating for anyone else, but they are generally polite about it, and those sort of blind spots aren't exactly uncommon in most species.

The Founder tends to assume all solids are alike and exist almost purely to promote unnecessary entropy. This assumption can be argued against to some extent, but they definitely become exasperated with the constant chaos of solid life.

This is more of a headcanon I have about Founders at large which becomes by default a fact about The Founder, but they are always the same temperature as the air/other medium directly surrounding them.

Related to that, the temperature they prefer to be is quite cold.

The Founder enjoys a great deal of people-watching. Just watching solids interact with each other can be exhausting and frustrating, but it's not boring, and they enjoy that.

💘 HEART WITH ARROW — what and/or who do(es) your oc consider the most important to them?

The wellbeing of the Link is always their priority. Past that, Odo has been named their responsibility, so he is important to them as well. They're unlikely to admit to it, but by the time Rivan had been around for a week or so, they also give a great amount of attention to his needs, safety, and comfort.

🤔 THINKING FACE — what are some of your oc's quirks/mannerisms?

The Founder tends to favor forms that show advanced age and ambiguous gender markers relative to the species they choose. When they're hanging out on DS9 with Odo pretty soon post-canon, they do so in the form of an elderly Bajoran person. When they choose other forms, they tend not to be forms that fly or are weightless. The Founder doesn't enjoy speaking aloud. They certainly can, but when they do, it is only in Dominion standard languages (most often ceremonial) and they keep their thoughts fairly direct. Their preference is for direct telepathy, which involves less language and more sharing of abstract thoughts, feelings, and images. They have a particular dislike of Federation translation devices and will often use Rivan as a translator when that's practical.

Choosing Age-Appropriate Fidget Toys

First and foremost, consider who the fidget toy is for.

“The purpose of fidget [and] sensory toys for toddlers is sensory exploration,” Sanschagrin says. “[They] are learning about the world through their environment, and offering them various sensory experiences encourages them to learn in different ways.” At this stage in development, she recommends sensory-based toys that have multiple textures, high-contrast colors, or even fun sounds, like crinkle paper.

Fidget toys for elementary-aged children are used more for regulation. “This means that fidgets can be a tool to either ‘wake up’ your body [and] brain or to calm yourself down,” she says. For this age range, she says the biggest benefit comes from toys that encourage more movement and strong sensory feedback. Kids might use more concentration while playing with these toys and often focus more on the toy itself.

“Additionally, fidgets that provide a sense of deep pressure, compression—or as we occupational therapists call it, proprioceptive input—would be a great option,” Sanschagrin says. “This would include things that make the child’s hands work hard by squeezing, pinching, stretching apart, or pushing the fidget.”

Teens and adults use fidget toys for regulation as well, Sanschagrin says, but tend to use smaller ones that are both fun and easily used while focusing on other activities. “Consider fidgets that would be inconspicuous when held in their hands or even fidgets that can be manipulated using only one hand,” she says. “These are the more traditional forms of fidgets, like the classic fidget spinner that was popular a few years ago.”

Sanschagrin recommends occasionally rotating fidgets, as kids tend to go through phases of what they like, and this will help renew their interest in their toys. “Also keep in mind the goal or what function you want to fidget to serve prior to purchasing,” she says. “If your child really likes the fidget using their fingers, a fidget snake is more likely to land rather than a squeeze ball.” Overall, though, she says fidget preference simply depends on the person, and parents should be open to trial and error.

How We Evaluated

To figure out which fidget toys would make the cut, I asked for recommendations from other parents, as well as from Sanschagrin, who uses fidgets in her occupational therapy practice. I also tested a few out and allowed my 7-year-old to test some, too. I read through countless reviews on various retail sites to see which ones consumers recommend, making sure to note which reviews were independent versus ones that were in exchange for free products, to reduce bias. Ok I totally want to hear more about this survivors au/Delores is real! How do the siblings handle having this different version of Five? Five may be better adjusted but he still has to heard his family around like a bunch of stray cats. What happens when Hazel and Cha Cha show up? How do they find out that Vanya causes the apocalypse and how does Five handle that revelation?!

here is the thing, i think the survivors au has the potential to be HILARIOUS

no one knows how to handle a well-adjusted five, and this absolutely includes the commission

So you mentioned Hazel and Cha-Cha?? Five in this au was not nearly as absolutely feral as he is in the show bc he knows how to interact with people - he was raised by a competent adult and a weird best friend and they occasionally saw other survivors as well

please picture old Five hanging around the water cooler and chatting with Hazel

the other funny thing is that Five is competent passing - he is well adjusted emotionally but functionally?? Hazel is out there complaining about dental being cut and office parties and budgets and Five is there sipping his drink having never filed taxes in his life. Five doesn't know what the fuck a dental plan is, he was a child soldier and then lived in an apocalypse.

So please picture for me Hazel being like "okay I know corporate wants us to keep what we're being paid to ourselves but fuck that, workers unite, what do you get paid as a legend old timer?"

and five is like "you're getting paid? i get to not get tossed back into the apocalypse, I think"

"but what about expense forms? what about medical care?"

"I'm like 80% sure i'm being experimented on, actually." Five says nonchalantly, "Don't get me wrong, my idea of medical care is fucked by being a child soldier but I'm pretty sure regular people don't have electrodes attached to their heads every time they get a checkup. Could be wrong though! My ex-dad used to monitor my brainwaves while I slept so like, my idea of appropriate shit is fucked, you know?"

This is a Five who was raised by Rick, he is polite to his coworkers. If Dot asked him if he wanted to grab lunch, Five would have gone and grabbed lunch with her or politely said that he couldn't.

Cha Cha only ever talks to Five when she wants to talk shop, so they've had a couple of conversations about weapons but not much else tbh, Hazel just tends to be more personable

So when they're sent after Five, Hazel is much more hesitant to kill who he perceives as a "work friend" and also is definitely thinking about all the times Five casually revealed a way the commission was being highkey shady about him, such as the potential experimentation, no pay, working under duress etc. He's much more easily turned against the commission because he's even more primed to say "fuck the commission" than he is in canon

Hazel out here like "how did Five break his contract when Five wasn't even being paid? I kind of want to read it."

Hazel out here like "I would unionize if I didn't think the commission was anti-union enough to send literal assassins after me if I suggested it :/"

Five just. talks over them a lot and makes so much sense that it's actually really hard to argue with him, and he's weirdly considerate of his family's obligations

Like Diego is like "i have to go see Patch" then Five is like "that's great I'm proud of you buddy, it would actually be really handy to have some law enforcement read into the situation if you think she's up to the task. that goes for everyone by the way! If y'all have people you trust, more bodies would be super helpful I think"

Diego, with this weird permission, probably?? Does? Awkwardly attempt to read Patch into the situation? Patch is, obviously, like "what the fuck, Diego" but probably goes with him to the mansion (????????) because she's concerned and then meets his fucking whacko family with their superpowers and suddenly everything is 100% more realistic

Five is just like "yes hello I'm aware I look like a child, i'm actually in my late 50s or early 60s (apocalypse time amiright) because of time travel stuff. Yes I am Five Hargreeves who went missing in like 2002 or whatever. anyway it's lovely to meet you, i'm so glad diego has someone he trusts, and considering my sibling's shifty looks when i told them to invite anyone they trusted this genuinely makes me concerned that Diego is the most socially well-adjusted of them."

"That cannot be possible." Patch says, like someone who has met Diego Hargreeves.

"You haven't met the rest." Five says sympathetically, "In our defense we were raised in isolation as child soldiers."

"That... explains so much." Is all Patch can say to that, "But you seem..."

"I'm adopted." Five waves away.

"We're ALL adopted." Diego grits out, very aggrieved by this and also not sure if he likes the fact that Patch seems friendly with Five, or at least is listening to him?

"I'm double adopted."

However! With the recruitment of Patch, herding Diego becomes like 90% easier.

Honestly the worst to herd are probably Luther and Allison? Luther because he's Number One and resents Five taking charge and also resents Five's casual dismissal of Reginald and also suspects that Five (or at least the commission) has something to do with Reginald's death?

Allison because she is torn between following Luther and helping him and helping Five but also calling Patrick and Claire at every possible moment while ALSO trying to repair her relationship with Vanya. She's flighty - she'd bail on a Five-apocalypse-assignment if Vanya mentioned being hungry or if Luther called or anything like that

Vanya likes to be included and, if asked, would probably drop as many current obligations as she can. Like she would probably cancel her teaching if Five genuinely and sincerely asked her for her help, which he does because he's 100% sure Dolores would manifest in front of him and smack him if he dared even imply someone without powers wouldn't be helpful

Vanya is like "I'm not sure if i'll be helpful - I don't have powers ):" and Patch is like "wtf are you talking about - my superpowers are Gun, Backup, and Reading Comprehension and i am like the most useful member of this team right now"

Vanya gets a confidence boost just from hanging out with Patch honestly, I think they should be friends

Klaus is thrilled to be included are you kidding?? He says he does it for money but he's just happy to be there and also as one of the most emotionally intelligent siblings he is mildly concerned about the fact that Five looks like he's about to cry and also emotes

Five also gives Klaus positive reinforcement, hugs, and Five absolutely weaponizes the I'm not mad, but I believe that you can do better and I'm going to give you more chances because I love you and fully believe that next time you'll be amazing way that Rick used on him.

I feel like Five ends up saying something along the lines of "I understand that x is really important, and we're definitely going to look into it. Is it something that needs to be addressed right now, or is it something that can wait until after April 1st? If it can wait, I can write it down here on this list so we don't forget. If it can't wait then we can figure out a time to address it and help you" a lot

Like Grace malfunctioning and potentially killing Reginald?

"We don't have to make this decision right now." Five says patiently, "Because Grace is a robot, we have some options. Living with a robot who is potentially malfunctioning and homicidal is dangerous, but Luther saying that means admitting that Reginald might have made a mistake or error with Grace's programming or upkeep. I haven't been here for a long time, but I remember Reginald being very precise. Regardless, this isn't a choice between permanently shutting her off or not. We can shut her down temporarily until we can fully address the issue. We can ask and see if there is a 'system reboot' option or some sort of system check that Grace can undergo. We can try find and hire an expert to take a look at her programming to find the issue."

Five gives this speech while like, organizing the weaponry in the house on a table very nonchalantly

Five out here making buzzer noises at his siblings arguments like "yeah no that's a false dichotomy and a strawman's argument, want to try again?"

(Look apocalypse nights were long and they had games that were literally about arguing pointless shit like ranking types of chairs or the best way to break out of a prison without powers and things could get heated)

"Who died and made you boss?" Luther demands.

"Uh, the world? Were you not listening?" Five asks, looking very purposefully confused.

It gets even MORE delightful when Five reads Rick into the situation because a) he promised and b) his siblings really have like, no connections jeeze

Rick fully believes that this is his son from the future, like Five introduced himself, but Five skipped out on a few key details. Such as being adopted.

So Rick spends a solid chunk of time just staring at Five, who looks basically nothing like him, trying to think like, who is his mother ???? if we save the world will Five stop existing? why would I name my child 'Five'? Does everyone have powers in the future? was there like... a radioactive apocalypse? would radiation give future humans superpowers? when did my life turn into a comic book? am i even allowed to ask these questions? will knowledge of the future fuck things up?

and then when Five comes back and is like "what is up everyone this is my dad Rick who will be joining us, he doesn't have any memories of me thanks to time travel but if anyone is mean to him i WILL kneecap them"

"Your DAD?"

Five does kidney punch Klaus for saying that Rick is a DILF but otherwise everyone just is like, warily looking at this Normal Dad Man in confusion because?? This is the dude who raised Five, who they watched take out like an entire commission team by himself yesterday? He looks so. Normal.

Rick is very confused and like, wonders if he's supposed to be the team mascot? But Five keeps involving him and asking his opinion and in return Rick enforces snack breaks and makes everyone sandwiches and has gentle talks with everyone

Every time Five notices someone about to blow he just lovingly makes sure that that person is alone in a room with Rick

Luther ends up crying on the sofa with Rick gently patting his back as Rick calmly states that Luther seems like he's put a lot of time and effort into his family and making his father proud and that since Reginald isn't here to say it, Rick will have to be the one to say that he's proud and that they've been dropped into a difficult and stressful situation - so soon after Reginald's death when they're still grieving! - and he's doing so well

Luther, experiencing unconditional positive paternal regard for the first time in his life: i don't know why i'm crying so much

honestly this is just a comedy of juggling the gang, having impromptu therapy sessions and discussions, investigating the apocalypse and the eye, leonard trying to meet vanya continuously and failing because she's constantly surrounding by family or rick/patch, the commission trying their best to bust up the dream team/isolate Vanya/kill or remove Five, while Hazel lives out his romcom dreams with Agnes and also says "fuck the commission"

I don't have anyone to talk to about my general dislike of Kataang as a ship, so... I thought I'd ramble to you. XD

I actually really like when one part of a ship tends to do a bit more of the caretaking, though never all the caretaking, and I tend to like to balance that with the other partner either being generally more stable and sound or being physically stronger and more of a protector role. But one thing I never can stand in a ship is one part of the ship acting like a full on parent and the other part of the ship acting like their child, especially if it's a mlw with the woman acting in the role of mother (due to the tired 'my wife is a nagging ball and chain / I have three kids and one of them is my husband' stereotypes that I really hate.) And Katara was slotted into the role of Aang's mother figure despite what shipping moments the writers put in that feel awkward as heck. (And on that note, I really feel like laughing when people hold up those shipping moments as proof of the ship's supremacy, because it doesn't prove the ship was ever any good, it just proves that the writers might've had kataang as their baby they wanted to make end game even if it didn't feel natural.)

Kataang is one of those ships that I think makes sense that it happened, but I cannot see them making their relationship work for very long. Aang developing feelings for Katara and Katara developing feelings for him when they're some of the only people they see consistently for a long stretch of time while they go through a lot of trauma makes perfect sense. But then what makes sense at least to me is them starting to argue, struggling in their relationship, spreading it to their friend group some accidentally, and eventually cut things off mutually and decide to just be friends. That's my shit! Katara means a lot to Aang and vice versa, but I don't think that would change at all without a romance element and would actually just make their foundation as friends and as family that much stronger.

okay so this is like 2 weeks old forgive me but yeah; i agree with a lot of this.

a lot of people who have issues with k@taang tend not to have issues with the tropes in the ship, like a caring partner with a childish partner or w/e, but the way it’s applied in ka despite their canon development being portrayed as something romantic is ... weird.

katara is a maternal person, we’ve seen her react motherly & almost smother those around her — mainly toph — because it’s partly a trauma response & partly the role she was forced to mold into post her mother’s death & her father going off to war. this itself isn’t a bad thing, a lot of katara’s ships have her being maternal & caring towards her partner because that’s who she is!! she’s a caring person. but with a.ang, it’s less a functional choice she’s made in the relationship where she has the option to turn it off when it becomes too much, but more something she has to do because the relationship won’t let her grow out of it.

just look at some examples in the show. a.ang runs off to play with others while katara is concerned about them getting food & surviving. katara is consistently looking out for the group while a.ang is often off doing his own things & a lot of the time, not doing the one thing he’s supposed to do, master the elements.

hell; a.ang consistently goes into the avatar state & katara is consistently made the emotional band aid to prevent him from going too far & killing people in it, something that is never resolved in the show or even in the comics. in ember island players, he tells katara that he had to actively resist going into the avatar state just because a version of her on stage — an actively sexualized, demeaning, offensive version of her btw — made out with zuko & he didn’t like that. he doesn’t even care to ask if she was okay when her friends were laughing at her for rightfully being upset about this & then later on, he forces a kiss on her & then acts like a wounded puppy when yet again, katara is rightfully upset.

this also doesn’t change by the time we get to tlok. katara is now the healing housewife who does nothing when her husband actively isolates himself from his two non - airbending children to focus on the sole airbender; which was incredibly harmful & disgusting. this a.ang doesn’t even have the “excuse” that a lot of atla - era a.ang stands give him about his age, him “only being twelve.” well he’s in his 30s by that time so clearly nothing has changed. knowing what we know about katara in atla; how she’s headstrong, how she stands up to her loved ones if they’re doing something wrong, how she’s compassionate & cares & loves with her whole heart — does her standing by when a.ang is actively harming two of her children sound like something she would do? no.

but that’s what she was written to do because the writers fundamentally put her character behind the ship they wanted her to be in, a ship that they’ve had incredibly toxic & misogynistic ideals about, including a.ang being the “nice guy” that had to win her from all those “gross dudebros” that dumb girls apparently always fall for.

i really wish that even if they had to become a couple in atla, their marriage or whatever wouldn’t have survived into tlok. not because i ship zutara or i “hate a.ang” but because i love katara, i see a lot of myself in her & she deserved better than a relationship that would consistently treat her as arm candy, something to be won & would fundamentally change her character to someone who just stands by passively as a “caretaker”, rather than acts as a “lover.”

Oof... :''( this scene (honestly this whole chapter) came about after I'd written out the first drafts of both Chapter 54 and the next Lesson In side story (neither of which has been published yet, don't worry, no one missed anything!). Since we're not in Noctis's head for any of the narration, I realized that he seems to make a fairly dramatic jump from how he appears in Chapters 48, 49, and what is now 51, to how he appears in Ch54 and the side story. While I as the author know how he got there, I realized it wouldn't be clear to readers, so I added this chapter to show Noctis's mental state in more depth.

So all that said! Canonically, throughout FFXV, Noctis tries very hard not to show emotions in front of other people. I talked about that in this post already, but tl;dr aside from a handful of outbursts when he's pushed past his ability to cope, Noctis does an almost frighteningly good job of keeping his emotions bottled up unless he's completely alone with no one to witness.

I suspect it's because he's been a public figure his whole life, and in particular, the only heir to the throne of a country at war. Even as a child, his slightest show of emotions, aka weakness, in public would be pounced on by tabloids and anyone with a grudge against the Lucis Caelums. Even in a relatively more private setting, such as around members of the Council or other political figures, showing emotion of any kind would be very risky. Looking to the British royals as an example, it's always a Big Deal if the Queen or her grandsons show any human emotion or personality beyond a sort of benign statesmanship.

But Noctis is not only still in his emotionally volatile early 20s, he's also a deeply emotional and empathetic person in general. He feels things VERY strongly, and it's obvious that suppressing those strong emotions in order to be the Crown Prince takes a huge toll on him. He can do it, but the longer he does it, the harder it is on him.

During the events of FFXV, Noctis usually gets to take out his emotions on enemies in physical combat; it's the times when he can't that he tends to slip up and have a public outburst. As Crown Prince, Noctis can't openly show emotions or pick fights; his options are to either find somewhere to be emotional where no one can see, or be mulish, stubborn, and/or cuttingly polite in ways that get other people to start a fight with him. (Kind of like how as a teenager he provokes Ignis to a fight in Brotherhood.) That second one might not be as satisfying as getting to have an actual outburst, but it takes the edge off ever so slightly - enough that he can continue to function.

So back to this snippet. Right before this, Angeal's narration comments that Noctis went off by himself after Lazard mentions wanting to pass off the hard parts of the media campaign to Rufus; as well as that Noctis deliberately insulted Sephiroth that morning in Angeal's apartment. Putting 2+2 together, Angeal can tell both that something is deeply bothering Noctis, and that Noctis is - subconsciously or otherwise - seeking an outlet for whatever he has bottled up (hence provoking Sephiroth).

And hoo boy, what he has bottled up: primarily grief for his father and the memories of the times he's done similar public relations campaigns with him as King and Crown Prince; but also guilt that he left his friends behind to deal with hell on their own (like Lazard is); and the knowledge that if and when he does go home to fulfill his duty, he, you know, dies. That's a lot all going on at once, and he's reaching a breaking point. But he likes Angeal and Lazard enough that he doesn't really want to pick fights with them, so instead he uses his other tactic - retreating to be emotional in private.

The problem, of course, with retreating to be emotional in private is that if you have perceptive friends like Angeal, they can find you. Angeal was both trying to be a good friend, and testing his suspicions a bit, by letting Noctis hear him walk up, rather than trying to sneak up on him and catch him mid-breakdown. Noctis still hasn't figured out how well the Firsts can hear, so he doesn't know Angeal saw him in that moment. So he tries to evade again, to make an excuse to get out of sight so he can let go of the white-knuckled grip he has on his emotions. Of course, Angeal doesn't let him...

Redesign Prompt RESULTS!

Alright, thank you everyone who has voted, the results are now in! Overwhelmingly our winner is Ranmao 🐈!

First of all, I need to insert a few caveats here. Unlike with Victorian fashion, I do not have years and years of studying of Qing dynasty-fashion behind me. So whatever results I show here are the product of a fortnight of reading up and meticulous studying of contemporary photographs. a.k.a. I am merely scraping the surface here. But! I do promise that everything shown here is done to the best of my ability to be responsible as a content provider.

Now without further ado, let us dive into Ranmao’s current design, the blatantly obvious inaccuracies, and how I propose to redes...ign... her outfit while keeping the original intact as much.... as possible???? Heck, this is not even worthy of being called a ‘redesign’, this is straight up designing from scratch!

Hair

Let us start with her bangs. Her bangs are in fact surprisingly accurate, as late Qing dynasty women would wear their bangs in a variety of Bettie bangs trimmed well above the eyebrows. Having sides of the bangs growing longer framing the face was usual too, though they would be cut slightly thicker than Ranmao’s. Though, we don’t know how much hair Ranmao has, so I see no reason to alter it.

Twin braids are very much associated with the “China doll look”, but they seem to have been branded into our image of the “Chinese Girl” because it was the go-to look for unmarried women in Republic China (which is many years later than Ranmao’s time, and also has more surviving images.)

In Ranmao’s time, unmarried girls would either wear the bottom part of their hair down, or have everything tied into a single braid behind them. Girls who preferred a more feminine look would often decorate the sides or the top with flowers or other ornaments depending on their wealth.

Yana’s notes say that the flower in Ranmao’s hair is a Chinese peony, which is also called the Empress of Flowers in Chinese as well as Japanese culture. I could find sources on how the peony was the symbol of the Empress of China, and how one better avoid wearing any type of peonies around the Empress herself for fear of being suspected of disrespect. But I could not find any evidence of such flowers being banned for other people, so presumably it was more an ‘unwritten code of politeness’ rather than fashion law.

Hence, I kept the pink peony design for Ranmao, and decorated them in the way Qing women would have.

Neckline

By far the most interesting thing I learned from this redesign attempt was that the “mandarin collar” - the thing that pops up first in most people’s minds when thinking about Chinese fashion - was in fact not at all common.

In this academic work on Chinese fashion history, Finnane writes that the ‘high collar’ was “not a common feature of costume before the twentieth century.” Instead, most costumes would have had a round neckline.

The ‘high collar’ gained popularity in early 1900s in China after the Europeans brought with them the beauty standard for high collars, as well as slim-fitted silhouettes. The Chinese increasingly adopted this type of collar and the slim silhouette (the well known ‘china dress/qipao/cheongsam’), and the relatively many early photos that survived helped engrave this stereotype into our minds.

Sleeves

I do not think it requires any mention, but 19th century Chinese fashion did not include boleros... For many of the original designs of Ranmao I can sort of see where Yana got that image from, but this bolero-look truly beats me.

The sleeves worn in the late Qing period were relatively wide, though they were starting to slim down over time. Late Qing women enjoyed much more flexible clothing rules than earlier Qing women, and the width of the sleeves was in great part determined by personal preference, season, but mostly one’s wealth.

Needless to say, the larger the sleeves the more fabric and embroidery it would require, and thus more expensive. Also, the wider the more it would get into the wearer’s way.

I don’t know how much thought Yana put into Ranmao’s original design in relation to her function as elite bodyguard, but considering how the original has zero practicality and only serves to maximise Ranmao’s attractiveness, I have no qualms about giving Ranmao fairly large sleeves too. Besides, let us assume that Lau is responsible for providing Ranmao with clothes. Illegal money tends to fill the pockets quite deeply, I don’t think he can’t spare a few pounds for big sleeves.

Wider sleeves would expose much of ‘a lady’s precious skin’, as such a more fitted layer would have been worn underneath. (The sleeves under the wider sleeves obviously did not have to be orange-ish. This was merely coincidence that both my redesign and the visual source have this colour.)

Silhouette

The figure hugging silhouette x Chinese clothes was - as mentioned above - not at all a thing in Ranmao’s time. In fact, the accentuation of the “female curves” was considered very inappropriate if not downright ugly in the Qing dynasty.

Yana’s notes mention that the thing Ranmao wears is just an European corset and that that is the only thing ‘English’ about her attire.

Well... I don’t know where the idea that Victorians wore corsets on the outside comes from, but I myself admittedly was fooled by this a few years ago too... I promise you all now however, Victorians decidedly did not wear their ‘bras’ on the outside. I think even now this look is considered rather ‘questionable’ by most people.

Instead, Qing dynasty clothes were mostly cut wide and straight, loosely dangling around their bodies offering maximum comfort and space. You feared Ranmao killing you in her corset? Now tremble before her now blessed with maximised agility.

Trousers

Well... I considered ‘translating’ Ranmao’s attire to 2020 standard like I did for O!Ciel, but that would not be Tumblr-filter approved. Skirts so short they could be mistaken for a belt are nothing too surprising today, but wearing one with a split that deep is probably a bit too revealing even by today’s standards.

By the late Qing dynasty, men and women, rich and poor alike predominantly wore trousers. Long robes (skirts) were definitely in fashion too, but they were reserved for those who could afford to not have much agility. If you were a farmer, robes would not have been your first option. Perhaps the way long skirts were viewed by the Qing Chinese was not unlike the way we see them now; ‘more classy’ ‘more feminine’ and ‘less convenient’, but not the only way to express femininity.

In these pictures below we can see relatively rich women, married and unmarried alike, all wearing trousers.

Ranmao is predominantly a fighter, and as trousers are plenty feminine in Chinese fashion culture, I don’t see why she would not choose to wear trousers instead of a restricting long skirt. Hence I gave her a pair of trousers.

Shoes

Like I said before, “the shoes are correct...” But the anklets definitely are not!

Golden or silver anklets are something that are worn by very, VERY young children in China. Even to this day it is customary among many Chinese people to gift newborn children at least one piece of pendant, bracelet or anklet, for it is believed to bring the child luck. More practically, this piece of jewellery will become the child’s first piece of property then, which can be sold later SHOULD they ever run into a financially difficult situation.

These anklets or bracelets would not be removed from the child unless they have outgrown them, which happens fairly quick. Ranmao who is probably full grown should have outgrown them at least ten years ago. Hence, seeing these things on Ranmao would probably make it look like she is still wearing diapers or bibs.

Chinese people would likewise not have worn shoes barefoot. Instead, they would have worn cotton socks which were mostly white.

DOUBLE HAMMERS

HERE COME THE WEAPONS! Luckily Yana wrote the following note or I would never have guessed what they are for my knowledge about Chinese weapons is next to nothing.

“These are【SUPER】heavy. They are weapons called 双錘 (double hammers) and they in fact exist. I heard these were used by power-type warriors.”

So, I googled 双錘 and it turns out that the type Ranmao is holding do indeed exist! But... only in fiction and theatre.

The hammers that were used in actual combat were either very thin and long, or short and plump. Such hammers were one of the most primitive metal weapons in China, and quickly fell out of favour among Chinese warriors when more practical weapons such as the metal spear, sword and bows were invented. The hammers mostly retained their value because of their weight in heroic tales and myths about legendary warriors and deities.

I don’t have the full details, but apparently according to some legends or myths, one of such big-ass hammers could deal a force of 200kg, and thus 400kg combined. Regardless of this being realistic or not, it sure does sound very cool! It is therefore no wonder this primitive weapon retains its popularity even today.

Nowadays when these hammers are used, they are either the blown up theatrical versions, or the smaller versions for the sake of preserving martial arts.

I had a bit of a dilemma as to which version to give Ranmao, but in the end I settled with the short and heavy ones because I wanted to keep the idea of this small and innocent looking girl wielding solid metal balls. Two cheer-leading sticks would simply not have the same weight, figuratively and literally.

It’s an issue of concern because she revealed that I always do this. I guess this was the straw that broke it, especially given that what we were discussing was very trivial. (Maybe the frivolousness of the subject is precisely what made my correction seem more pedantic, unnecessary, arrogant.) She says that my attitude disregards her long life experience, and that if she were a stranger, she would think of me as a “snot-nosed brat who knows nothing about life” instead of as a “wise young person”, which is the viable alternative. She said that I am closed-minded and that I shoot everything down. (The problem of small-mindedness is what you addressed the only other time I wrote to you.)

I don’t know why I come off as arrogant. I’m sure that I’m not. I asked my mother what it was that made her think that, which she thought was a silly question because what she sensed was a general demeanor rather than specific behaviors. In the end we were only able to establish that my lack of eye contact was one of those factors. I can work on that, but surely that’s not determinant. What makes people think of others as arrogant? Should I stop correcting people? I don’t correct others in order to feel superior to them. I do it because I like to debate, in order to keep my thinking sharp, and because there is something painful about friends/family having false notions. I think it’s fair to say that my intention isn’t rooted in arrogant soils.

Granted, my suggestion of stopping correcting people is black-and-white, given that there is the grey option of changing the *way* I correct people. I’m just wondering if it’s an unhealthy habit in the first place. But given how prevalent a thought process it is (i.e. questioning people’s statements and finding faults), the process of getting rid of it may be akin to self-directed psychological violence. I mean, this is the same mode of being that makes me good at what I’m good at. (There’s also the option of keeping the thought process, but not correcting people aloud, but I don’t know what else there is to talk about other than analyzing ideas and their faults. Maybe I should analyze ideas for their strengths too, and express that side more than the faults.)

So anyway, let’s go with grey: So far I’ve tried thinking of an arrogant person that I know in order to understand my behavior, but I can’t think of anyone. Also, no matter how hard I try to put myself in someone else’s shoes in order to simulate an interaction with myself, it doesn’t really work, and I can’t see the arrogance, except if I were to just tell someone “that’s wrong” without any explanation. (I wonder if that’s what went wrong in the conversation with my mother.) Either way, this whole issue boils down to the fact that I’m not arrogant by any reasonable criteria that I found online, but that I come off as such. This was longer than intended. Thanks for your kindness and help.

Here are some questions for you to reflect on. They are meant to increase awareness of your underlying assumptions, beliefs, and values. Answer honestly:

Do you care about your mom? Do you care about how she's faring, what she's experiencing, what she's thinking or feeling, what she needs and desires, what she hopes for or aspires to, etc?

If you care, how do you SHOW your care to her?

If you don't care, how does that affect your behavior toward her?

Do you believe that the mother-child relationship only goes one-way? (Is it the mom's job to do for you but you owe her nothing?)

You say you like to debate to sharpen your mind. Innocent enough. I like to roller skate to keep myself physically fit. In an ideal world, I would never take my skates off. Does my enthusiasm for roller skating mean that I slap my skates on anywhere, any time? No. Surely it is inappropriate to skate around a hospital or the supermarket. Not only could I seriously harm myself, I would also be exhibiting flagrant disregard for the safety and well-being of others.

What you like to do for yourself sometimes comes into conflict with other people. If you care about people and hope to have healthy and happy relationships with them, you have to take their needs and wants into consideration in every interaction. You have to abide by ethical rules and principles that allow your needs to be met without neglecting the needs of others or interfering with their ability to get their needs met. Without ethics, society wouldn't be able to function, because it would just be a free-for-all.

You mention small-mindedness. It is quite small-minded to walk around the world only thinking about what you need/want. In the best case scenario, you are completely oblivious to others, and they will perceive you as clueless or self-absorbed. In the worst case scenario, you only interact with people for your own personal gain, and that would make you an exploitative or even abusive person. Is that the kind of person you want to be?

Do you basically treat people as though their sole purpose on earth is to debate you and help you sharpen your mind - to serve you? Do you launch into debates with people without asking for consent or checking to see if they want to be corrected? If you do, they will call you arrogant, not because you've put yourself on a pedestal and call yourself superior like an evil cartoon character, but because you are communicating to them that your needs/wants are most important AND you don't give a damn about theirs.

Webster's definition of arrogance: "an insulting way of thinking or behaving that comes from believing that you are better, smarter, or more important than other people". You believe that you know better, otherwise, you wouldn't grant yourself the social authority to intrude on people's boundaries, invalidate their experience, and correct them uninvited. You believe that you are smarter, otherwise, you wouldn't automatically assume the dominant social role of corrector. You behave as though you are the more important member of the relationship because your main priority is YOUR need to feel better (about your skills or about what others believe) while overlooking the other person's needs. Seems like you fit the definition quite well.

Despite that, I wouldn't call you arrogant because I understand that small-mindedness is a difficult problem to overcome. I see the effort that you're putting in to understand it. I'm charitable because I'm not the one who was hurt by your behavior. When people feel hurt, they often have difficulty expressing it. Maybe it comes out clumsily or they aren't able to explain their hurt without hurting you in return. Expressing one's true feelings is to make oneself vulnerable. If someone doesn't trust you to understand and validate their feelings or, worse, they believe that you will attack them for their feelings, they will not be completely honest with you. Your mom is trying her best to give you the benefit of the doubt by saying "if you were a stranger...", but she doesn't feel comfortable enough with you to express her hurt fully and explicitly as it happens. Why? Because the very reason she is hurt in the first place is that you have shown very little regard for her feelings. Following from the previous post of yours, the root of the problem is that you have such a poor understanding of feelings to begin with that you view them as inconsequential in yourself and others (very immature Fe).

I believe you have no ill-intent. I have said before that the typical Ti dom never sets out to hurt people on purpose. Rather, they hurt people unintentionally because their perspective is too small: 1) they don't grasp that other people's needs may be very different from their own and thereby fail to consider them, 2) they don't know how to empathize with different perspectives and validate them, and/or 3) they don't understand that SHOWING love and care is necessary for people to justify continued investment in the relationship.

In other words, Ti doms tend to hurt people out of negligence or acts of omission. Some of them get frustrated at not being able to solve their relationship problems. They might try to convince themselves that doing nothing means that no harm can be done, so they adopt a passive stance in the relationship and perhaps even train themselves to keep their mouth shut (self-violence). They fail to understand that there's more than one way to cause hurt. Instead of learning better relationship skills, they check out mentally and emotionally. Being checked out only makes it worse because you hurt yourself and you keep hurting others by being even less attentive to their needs.

The foundation of meaningful relationships is showing care. In a healthy relationship, people trust you to care for their emotional needs and not violate their personal boundaries. If you only attend to your own needs/wants in social interaction, you are signalling that you don't really care about the other person. This problem with your mom shows that you give little to no consideration for emotional needs and personal boundaries. If you don't want friends, it's entirely your choice to be alone for the rest of your life, pretending that you never leave any footprints behind you. If you want friends, you'll have to put out more effort to be a better friend, by paying more attention to the consequences of your behavior.

Doing things that violate trust and boundaries, even if unintentional, causes hurt. When people feel hurt and don't feel safe to express the hurt, they are liable to say/do negative things. To have good emotional intelligence is to see past the surface of their negative words/behavior and grasp the underlying emotional needs that were unmet and/or the personal boundaries that were violated. Only then can you be a morally responsible member of a relationship, in terms of owning all the ways that you impact people, both positively and negatively.

Arrogant people don't care about the social impact they produce. As long as they get what they want and don't lose anything, the existence of others is of little importance to them. If your mom is important to you, then learn how to show it better by listening to her when she tells you about her needs/wants. You hyperfocus on the literal meaning of the word "arrogant" and whether it is true/false of you, as though proving it false means that there's nothing wrong. You need to listen to the people you have hurt, if you want to understand why your behavior is hurtful. Alternatively, you need to educate yourself about emotional needs, interpersonal boundaries, and what constitutes un/ethical behavior and why.

Project Rebirth - CH4: Final Touches

Content! From Whumper’s POV. (They’ll get a title soon btw, I just haven’t decided on a name yet).

Everything is set for the first practical stage of Project Rebirth to begin. All that is need is some final surgical attention, and a last talk to Whumper’s new investors. Also no editing we die like Toby’s previous owner...

Whumper sat next to Subject One, like he had every moment of spare time in the past five days. The last two, they barely twitched a muscle. Of course this was in part because of the starvation, but it was nice to have achieved nonetheless. Even if would wear of. Their body may be still, but the occasional twitch, hitch of a breath, told him their mind was racing.

He already picked out a name for them. Their masterpiece, even if it would take nine months before he would see their frantic eyes again. Everything was prepared. Their nursery—which was a rather misleading name, but it fit the process, and the marketing—was almost done, the housing facility would be complete in three months.

Subject One was the only one who really needed to be in the container for the sake of the time that it would give Whumper, but the aspect fit the aesthetic his investors expected. It would be what kept the program running for decades to come.

Subject One shuddered. They’d gotten the message. He’d chosen one of his newly acquired sponsors to deliver it through the earpieces. Not because it needed to be. He could just as easily move, then sedate the subject. Make the chaos in their mind spike just before they’d awake in ominous calm. Comforting calm, though it would take a while for the subject to feel about in that way. They had nine months, it would be enough.

The sponsors needed to feel special anyway. Some of them could make perfect pets, the way they seemed to crave special attention. He could try it someday. With this Project, even they could be reborn.

He nodded at Toby. “Bring them to the surgeon. It’s time for stage 3.”

Toby exited the corner he’d been standing in for the past day. It was a test, to see how obedient he really was. So far, Whumper had been pleased. Sure, seeing pets shiver at the thought of accidentally moving a muscle without permission could be rewarding, but it didn’t bring the type of productivity he needed. Toby’s compliant personality, in combination with Whumper’s training, did.

Toby reached for the subject’s shoulder like he always did.

“Not anymore, Toby,” Whumper commanded. “No more touching of any kind. You can move them, tube and all.”

Toby obeyed. With precision, he took the hand truck out of place and rolled it over to the doors that opened to the medical wing. Subject One would feel this, but it wasn’t enough to skew the results. If anything, it could amplify the result he was looking for.

He followed behind Toby, but entered the door to the watching room instead of the OR like Toby did. That’s where his funding was waiting. He hated having to care about it, but money was simply necessary for him to scale up the Project. “Thank you for coming back,” he told the seven investors waiting for him. “As I’ve said before, most of the program is completely tailored to your pet and the pet you wish they become. That means, no program looks or feels the same. This part though, they all have in common.”

He guided their gazes down to the OR—where the surgeon had sedated the subject—and begun the procedure. Toby watched from his corner, as Whumper had told him to. This would be the only time he was allowed this close to a subject before Rebirth, so Whumper made sure he knew as much as possible. The pet didn’t lie. He used to, but his previous owner trained it out of him.

If he were to fulfill any purpose at all in the future, he would have to learn to. Knowing about the stages before meeting the Reborn subjects was a good way to teach them. After all, he’d be the one to truly push the subject’s minds over the edge.

The investors patiently waited for Whumper to explain what was happening. “The implant all subjects receive is what makes this project so realistic. Like a newborn child, they have to learn everything. Eating, speaking, resisting, if you want them to. All in an effort to recreate them into the pet they were always meant to be. Now of course, some of them have skills we do want them to keep. Take Toby down there, he’s a master on the piano. For each pet, the implant’s functions can be customized.”

One of the investors raised her hand. “What are your plans for this one then?” she asked. “Does it have anything worth keeping?”

Whumper smiled. “In a less dire situation, we might have chosen to keep certain parts of them, but as you’ve noticed this is not the average pet we’re talking about. They will be reborn a blank slate. The only thing any pets are allowed to keep is their understanding of language—so they can obey commands, and their ability form minimal amounts of coherent thought and memory. We’ve found that this process works best if to some extent, the pets are aware of the changes. A risk, I know, especially with this one, but it will prove efficient.”

He straightened his tie. “This one in particular has quite the mouth, and they tend to use a bit too much of what they hear against their trainers. For that reason, we’ve limited their access to their vocabulary a bit more than usual. They’ll be able to understand simple sentences, but we won’t have to worry about their natural perceptiveness.”

“What’s he doing to their eyes?” a second investor asked.

Whumper’s heart fluttered. He’d hoped they’d ask. “Those, are highly sophisticated remote-controlled lenses.” They weren’t necessary, they function was mostly aesthetical from the subject’s perspective. They helped make it all a bit more realistic on both sides, though.

“They don’t have to be removed, ever. Which is why we’re putting them in so early. They control the subject’s ability to see color, and light. Like them implant, we can control them from behind the scenes. They aren’t vital, but they smooth out the transition from the Rebirth into the following stages of the program.”

He glanced down into the OR, where the surgeon was finishing up, and the other staff had begun to prepare the subject for stage 4’s container. “I’m afraid that I can’t show you anymore at this point, so my staff can take on this challenge with as little distraction as possible. However I’m happy to answer as many of your questions as I can.”

Several hands shot up. Whumper smiled.

“What are they doing?” Was the first question.

Whumper gazed down. Four people were removing the restraints and the jacket, and outfitted the subject in the thin white suit that would help keep them healthy and alive throughout the following stage.

They connected the dozens of tubes and wires that would take care of everything they couldn’t handle from outside the container, as he called it. “I’m afraid this is another one of those trade secrets, but what I can tell you is that in spite of how it looks, this will make the pre-Birth stage as realistic as it can be.”

“What about these nurseries that your people kept going on about. I’m sure they’re important, but it all sounds a bit too… human for my taste. I prefer my pets are used to the necessary restraints and housing conditions, so to speak.”

Whumper nodded. He wasn’t surprised to hear this investor thought his standard approach too kind. She’d demanded her pets were kept muzzled and bound at the facility’s daycare, even though they were among the most compliant creatures he’d ever seen.

“As I said,” he answered. “Everything can be customized. This subject I believe, will gain more from approach that teaches them that as a placeable pet, they will be cared for as long they don’t resist. Should you trust us with your pets though, if we decide after the evaluation that another approach may achieve the desired results more efficiently, we’re prepared. We have nurseries of all kinds, and our staff is prepared to fulfill any role they need to play.”

That seemed to please them. Whumper turned to the last question.

“How long does this program take?”

“We have multiple options. The standard program Subject One will go through can take up to sixteen years starting at the Rebirth, with a minimum time of three years. Now of course, that is a long time for a pet to be away. We have two accelerated programs that last either a few months, or even just a few weeks. You’re free to choose, but after the evaluation we will provide you with a suggestion. Not all pets need the full experience. Especially if they’re not old enough to be placed, a longer program can harm the natural development.”

A frown formed on a few faces.

“I can see you’re worried about the results I’ve promised you. You won’t have to wait long. The program may be an intense procedure, but the results will start to show after just a few weeks. The rest of the Project is about making them last, so these—” He dangled the subject’s bright red collar in front of them— “will soon be no more than a reminder of what I’ve solved.”

Whumper clasped his hands. The subject was moved out of the OR, into the container hall. “I must go now. My assistant will be up shortly to escort you out. I should mention Toby’s not allowed to be too talkative around strangers, but he’s still learning. If he breaks any rules, please contact me. He doesn’t respond well to strangers punishing him, he’s a bit too loyal for that.”
