Weyoun was of a long line of dedicated attendants, not all of whom had served the child--he was more than capable of handling a lack of direction for the time that was being asked. It would take a toll--one that Weyoun didn't deserve--but it was what had been asked of him by the one he served, and he would persevere. They needn't interfere the way Rivan was requesting.

And yet, they had been quick to indulge Rivan since the very beginning of his service. A soft spot, Odo had called it. They stroked his cheek and then his hair, as they contemplated, then the Founder gave in. You ask a great deal, Rivan. That it is not on your own behalf is to your credit, but you must realize that giving my attention to Weyoun will limit what you receive.

Founder Odo had departed some weeks ago, and the rhythm of life on the ship had changed considerably since then.

Weyoun had probably taken it the hardest. Vanath, responsible and watchful as always, had spent a week making sure he wasn't going to self-terminate, with only minimal breaks for meals and sleep. A Blessed Attendant bond was hard to break. His mood, circadian rhythm, appetite, and ability to focus had all been severely reduced during that time, and although Vanath had dutifully and compassionately dealt with the worst symptoms through therapeutic reconditioning, he still felt like a shadow of his former self without Odo present.

Rivan, now at the beginning of his second iteration and a Blessed Attendant to the beloved Sage he served, had observed his former Field Mentor closely. It was Weyoun who had taught him what it meant to be an Attendant— the sacred responsibility of being both companion and servant, the boundless faith that transcended and superseded mere obedience. When he was upset or afraid, Weyoun had soothed him. When he'd had night terrors, a problem to which his first iteration was unfortunately prone, Weyoun had been the one to sit with him and hold his hand and reassure him that he was completely safe.

This was very clearly not the Weyoun he knew. This was a shambling corpse that happened to kind of look and sound like Weyoun, but possessed none of the same light behind his eyes. Sure, he performed his duties well, but there was very little true love or devotion behind the action. He seemed to only have two emotions: apathy, and fear. And if he was going to help his mentor at all, Rivan needed some kind of divine intervention.

He prostrated himself before the Founder, silently hoping that the added deference would serve to get their attention and drive home just how much their guidance in this matter was needed.

Oh. They straightened slightly, pleased, and offered her a small smile in return for her efforts. She truly was finding her place. They were prepared for that to be the end of the interaction, but Lyta continued, and they gave her their attention again.

"Ah. You intend to stay." It wasn't a question, or even a clarification, really. Just a restatement of what she hadn't quite said. "You will have a home here." The last thing they'd want to do was to rock the floor under her just as she began to stand again. They looked at her for a moment longer, then set a hand on her shoulder, just brushing the side of her neck, and expressed their gentle pride and growing affection.

The Founder thinks Lyta is a sweet kid with lots of potential. They're deeply saddened by her lack of appropriate training and guidance in childhood, and thinks she could benefit greatly from some religion.

Odo thinks she's a very odd example of humanity. He pities her a little, at least at first. After a while, though, he adjusts to whatever she is and just determines to treat her like a vorta in terms of praise and physical affection.

✈️ AIRPLANE — does your oc like traveling, or do they consider themselves a more homey person?

Oh, no, absolutely not. Given the option, they would be perfectly content to remain within the Link for the majority of if not basically all of their existence. But needs must. They were deemed patient and old enough to handle Odo's nonesense, and in the interest of the child (Odo) and the Link as a whole, they went, and they endure the annoyances of travel and the discomfort of separation from the Link with grace most of the time, because they deem it necessary to do so.

🤍 WHITE HEART — what are three of your oc's neutral/questionable traits?

The Founder has a tendency to forget that solids have needs/feelings/wants/etc. For example, Rivan will often be left on the floor or not offered a seat or whatever because he's serving his function and that's just how Vorta are. It's not malicious, but they're so very old and so very separated from the realities of life as a solid, that things just don't occur to them.

They support the Dominion without question, doubt, or wavering and will not accept anything that indicates anything but the inherent superiority of Founders and the Dominion. It's frustrating for anyone else, but they are generally polite about it, and those sort of blind spots aren't exactly uncommon in most species.

The Founder tends to assume all solids are alike and exist almost purely to promote unnecessary entropy. This assumption can be argued against to some extent, but they definitely become exasperated with the constant chaos of solid life.

💯 HUNDRED POINTS SYMBOL — share three random facts about your oc that others may not know.

This is more of a headcanon I have about Founders at large which becomes by default a fact about The Founder, but they are always the same temperature as the air/other medium directly surrounding them.

Related to that, the temperature they prefer to be is quite cold.

The Founder enjoys a great deal of people-watching. Just watching solids interact with each other can be exhausting and frustrating, but it's not boring, and they enjoy that.

💘 HEART WITH ARROW — what and/or who do(es) your oc consider the most important to them?

The wellbeing of the Link is always their priority. Past that, Odo has been named their responsibility, so he is important to them as well. They're unlikely to admit to it, but by the time Rivan had been around for a week or so, they also give a great amount of attention to his needs, safety, and comfort.

🤔 THINKING FACE — what are some of your oc's quirks/mannerisms?

The Founder tends to favor forms that show advanced age and ambiguous gender markers relative to the species they choose. When they're hanging out on DS9 with Odo pretty soon post-canon, they do so in the form of an elderly Bajoran person. When they choose other forms, they tend not to be forms that fly or are weightless. The Founder doesn't enjoy speaking aloud. They certainly can, but when they do, it is only in Dominion standard languages (most often ceremonial) and they keep their thoughts fairly direct. Their preference is for direct telepathy, which involves less language and more sharing of abstract thoughts, feelings, and images. They have a particular dislike of Federation translation devices and will often use Rivan as a translator when that's practical.

Nah. Occasionally, they might add some decorative elements if they were trying to infiltrate something/fit in somewhere without drawing attention and it was culturally appropriate. But tattoos aren't really a thing they'll imitate for fun.

The Founder prefers, on the whole, not to interact with solids more than necessary. Given that, a few close friends seems more applicable, though they likely wouldn't use the word "friend" to describe any of them. After the first decade or so, they do strike up and maintain communication with several different people they find useful and those people would most likely call them a friend.

The Founder is wise in all things. After many centuries in the Link, they have a broad knowledge of many subjects and the sense gained from constantly thinking alongside others to think logically through a wide variety of factors.

The Founder exhibits unparalleled patience. Certainly, no other from the Link would have so calmly endured all of Odo's tantrums and illogical endeavors.

The Founder is merciful. While many of their family are swift to enact punishment for the slightest failure, they are generally content to forgive and move on without punishment, so long as they are convinced the lesson has been learned and the failure will not be repeated. Or, particularly unusual, if the failure was unavoidable.

watching odo just have to sit there in the background as dr mora is talking about him as a 'child' is giving me. such a visceral reaction. I too want to surrender my physical integrity and become formless goo to get away from being inside my own skin while listening to this. this one scene in a 1990s sci-fi show has better expressed my experience of neuroatypicality than every explicit piece of representation I've ever seen (save harrow the ninth but then no one is doing it like harrow the ninth it can't be beaten).

MORA: It would seem to me that being a scientist yourself, Lieutenant, you can appreciate the difficulty of our dilemma, and the elegance of the solution. When Odo was first found, nobody knew who, or indeed, what it was we were dealing with. A shapeless, viscous mass of fluid, a veritable organic broth. That was our Odo in the beginning. DAX: When did you realise you were dealing with a sentient lifeform? ODO: He didn't. I had to teach him that myself.

sometimes you are truly just sitting there while someone cheerfully calls your vulnerable unguarded childhood self a shapeless viscous mass of fluid or likens your body and soul to a vaguely unpleasant soup and you can't say shit about it. and the fact that young odo started to shapeshift as a desperate wordless helpless plea of 'please stop hurting me', and the way he phrases it as 'teach him that myself' in an attempt to cling on to some sort of control and agency he has to believe he had in that situation........
