yes its been five years but i am not over emma hallucinating that she severed all parabatai bonds while coming back from thule, just to turn and see jem bleeding as he asks "emma, emma how could you?" i mean WHAT a perfect scene to show how powerful the parabatai bond is. throughout tda the bond becomes an antagonist as julian and emma struggle against it, and its hard to remember that its actually a beautiful way to connect two souls. one of my favorite parts of the shadowhunters books is how cassie shows how powerful and overwhelming platonic love can be, and will and jem are the embodiment of that. the bond isnt just a symbol of their love but the physical manifestation of its endurance, and thats why the seelie queens proposal to break all bonds is so tragic. to take away that kind of connection is sacrilege, even at the cost of romantic love. one is not greater than the other, and thats one of the subtle but beautifully written themes threading through tda.

i can't get intimate parabatai moments out of my head

just imagine jace holding alec close to his body, rocking them gently when alec gets so stressed his breaths come out shaky. the way alec curls into jace in a way he wouldn't dare with anyone else. the way alec trusts him enough to let go completely. the way jace tightens his hold and shushes him quietly when alec let's out a sob and turns his face into jace's chest.

imagine matthew seeking james out in the middle of a party because he turned to tell james some gossip before realizing he had slipped away. the way matthew heads straight to the library because where else would his parabatai be? the way matthew lays his head in james's lap and let's james read aloud to him for hours. the way james cards through matthew's hair in the way he knows matthew loves. the way matthew silently preens. no one else willingly touches him like this.

imagine jem silently making his way to will's room sometime around 3 in the morning because he can feel the stress of his nightmares through the bond. imagine jem laying next to will and wrapping an arm around him because he doesn't want to wake will up due to how seldom he does sleep. so he just offers silent comfort and support and will basks in the warmth that radiates from their bond when he wakes up in the morning and sees jem sprawled next to him on the bed.

imagine emma wrangling all the kids up while julian cooks breakfast. the soft touches in passing and then the arm julian wraps around her once everyone is settled and eating. the kiss he presses to her temple and the smile emma hides in his chest.

imagine simon shrieking when clary beats him at his favorite game for the fifth time. clary's warm laughter flooding the room and simon shoving her bodily off the bed. simon's triumphant smile he gives clary from the bed.

imagine cordelia and lucie dancing in the ballroom of the institute for no other reason than want. the way cordelia ducks under lucie's arm with a laugh when lucie spins her. the way lucie absolutely giggles when cordelia dips her. the way they stumble when corselia looses her hold around her parabatai.

just intimate parabatai scenes where they both feel comfortable and warm and just loved because there is no love stronger than the one shared between parabatai.

Parabatai love: platonic, romantic ou something beyond?

You know, there's something that's been bugging me ever since I joined the TSC fandom in 2017, which is the way some fans get outraged when someone ships parabatai as a romantic couple. I know there are high controversies of what exactly the parabatai bond is all about, so I decided to give my opinion on it.

First of all, I'm not here to force you to like them romantically (because I myself am PASSIONATE about platonic connections), but rather to try to understand together how their bonding works.

There is a law that forbids them to love each other romantically, as old as any other Shadowhunters' law. And where there is a law, there are reasons. Jem explains a bit in TDA about the reason, and that the connection that exists between parabatai unleashes a man-made power, with no direct relation to the angels, which makes parabatai magic dangerous. In this case, it gives the pair such incredible power that it can turn them into either true nephilim (giants) or great mages. But since there is the corruption, in both cases where this happened there was chaos and destruction.

But while reading all of Cassandra's sagas, we come across at least one parabatai duo, from Robert and Michael to Emma and Julian. Several examples, several couples, and the most common thing about them is that one of them falls romantically in love with the other. Not in all, but so far in most cases. For me the reason is simple: the parabatai connection involves both platonic and romantic love.

Almost every time, it is mentioned that the connection is soulful, as if a part of their soul intertwines with their partner's, creating a kind of bond that simply does not exist in the world of men, mortal or immortal. It was a rune created by David and Jonathan with the intention of binding their souls to each other through the love they felt. A soul love is something beyond what we know.

Imagine loving a person so deeply, loving them more than you love your own soul to the point that it is impossible to compare even with lovers and children? Imagine feeling the presence of this person as a part of you that lives outside of your body and brings you peace and happiness? The way Cassandra wrote both Will and Jem and James and Matthew shows that deepness, that overwhelming affection. It is a love that blends the platonic and the romantic, where the characters love each other not as brothers, but beyond that.

So for me it is natural to read the books and feel the platonic affection that made us fall in love with the parabatai bond (and many of us, like me, have someone we consider our parabatai in real life) and also feel the vastness of the romantic love that exists between them. They love each other both ways and are not ashamed to admit it, it is so clear and at the same time a kind of love that those outside the parabatai bond would never understand in the TSC universe.

They love each other more than they love their own souls and that, to me, is the most beautiful kind of love there is.

So yes, do ship them romantically if you want, ou platonic if you prefer. By all means, the parabatai is just the BEST thing Cassandra Clare ever created in the TSC word, so enjoy it the way you want!

I didn't know that the tests were conducted before the parabatai ritual. A water test with which you can find out if there is a connection between them. good. How did Luke and Valentine manage to pass this test (if it was conducted at their age)? It's hard to believe in their true friendship and love in general, it was more of a collaboration, mentoring, but not a strong bond!
