Dead Point Creek near Punchbowl Falls (not to be confused with the more popular Punch_Bowl Falls of the same larger area). I've probably said it before, if you want beautiful green scenery, just add water. Believe it or not, this part of Oregon is where the green is less and the grasslands start. You wouldn't know it from this picture. You see, the Cascade mountains stop much of the clouds as the jet stream passes. So the western side is wet and green and the eastern side is mostly grasslands and even desert. When most people think of Oregon (or the Pacific NW) they usually only think of wet and more wet. But much of it is actually not. But here near Hood River on the eastern side of the Cascades, the water is still there but not gone and so you still have beautiful spots like this without quite as much rain all year. . Apr 2021 . Just watched a movie called A Dog’s Purpose and I have to say it was a tear jerker or I’m just a sensitive soul. If you haven’t watched it I recommend but have some Kleenex next to you just in case you’re a sensitive soul.

Look at this gorgeous beetle I found while out hiking today! Scaphinotus angusticollis, aka Snail-killer Carabid, perfectly matches the description of the "lovely wine-red" beetle Daniel catches for Cecilia in The Words and the Bees. Of course, it's a Pacific NW beetle, and, for the record, the New York species I had in mind when writing the book was Stictoleptura canadensis, the Red-shouldered Pine Borer. I can't get over what a jewel this Scaphinotus was though!

In The Words and the Bees, the MMC finds a beetle early in the morning and catches it for the entomologist he's falling in love with.

It wasn’t until they’d eaten and she’d finished her cup of coffee that she suddenly lifted her head and said, “You brought me a beetle.” “Yes,” Daniel said. His heart gave a heavy thump in his chest, and he felt awkward and nervous all over again. It was a bug, and he knew she liked bugs, and yet his palms were sweating. “I thought you might like it.” Cecilia looked over at the beetle, and a soft smile curved her lips. He would bring her a hundred beetles with his bare hands to see that smile directed at him.

It was 99 degrees in town yesterday, so I ran away to the coast to be around nature and as few humans as possible. I always feel happier when surround by Mother Nature. About a half mile into this hike, it was determined that this area was still too hot, so the walk back to the car began. I got some lunch and headed to another part of the coast that is much cooler. I made sure not to leave Ecola State Park without capturing this view. I’ll share a picture from the second trail I hiked. I see a lot of shots of sunrises and sunsets featuring Rainier but the #tatoosh were just as good or better this particular morning. I had been up long before the sun decided to poke its head out that morning. I was alternating between shots of Mt Rainier and the Tatoosh every couple of minutes but the Tatoosh soon out that day. It's that time of year again when the Salmon are jumping upstream in our part of the world. I shot this at a park in the town where I work just out of the Puget Sound. This would have been about the 2nd waterfall this fish came across on its journey upstream. It's interesting to get a shot like this because this particular fall in in the shade so I had to shoot quite a high ISO. And even shooting with a long lens, due to bushes blocking the view, I had to be fairly close which meant a lot of spray to try and keep dry and a clean lens. Not to mention that they come shooting out of the water from wherever, so you can't be too tight or you won't catch them in the frame.
