Sometimes when you're on a journey you have the presence to realize you are in a special moment. Such was the case for me and this sunrise. Of the places I would see on this trip, this was the highlight. Maybe that's because it was what I had most hoped and looked forward to. Perhaps it was because just an hour earlier it didn't seem like it would be so beautiful. But whatever the reason, I was elated, ecstatic as the sun came up. And though I was certainly clicking away capturing the moment, I was also just enjoying the view. Perhaps it's a nice thing that sunrises can linger sometimes. It was pretty much all I could hope for. This is of course Bryce Canyon National Park's main amphitheater as seen from along the rim trail just west of sunset point. The formations below are mesmerizing. You can spend an hour, you can spend a week, you can spend as long as you can afford enjoying this part and the rest of the park. Maybe I'm just overly enamored by it, but I still think it's my favorite National Park of all that I've been to (which is most of them in the west and many beyond). . Jan 2021 . I can't believe it's been a year now since I visited Ketchikan, Alaska. Ketchikan is known for fishing (Salmon), bears, the Misty Fjords, and most certainly totem poles. The artistry and craftsmanship of the poles is interesting. Whether they be older ones or newer ones like this one. I think it's a good tradition to keep going. Dead Point Creek near Punchbowl Falls (not to be confused with the more popular Punch_Bowl Falls of the same larger area). I've probably said it before, if you want beautiful green scenery, just add water. Believe it or not, this part of Oregon is where the green is less and the grasslands start. You wouldn't know it from this picture. You see, the Cascade mountains stop much of the clouds as the jet stream passes. So the western side is wet and green and the eastern side is mostly grasslands and even desert. When most people think of Oregon (or the Pacific NW) they usually only think of wet and more wet. But much of it is actually not. But here near Hood River on the eastern side of the Cascades, the water is still there but not gone and so you still have beautiful spots like this without quite as much rain all year. . Apr 2021 . A metallic blue wave? No, just another unique perspective of the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, Washington, USA. The brass color is actually the more accurate color for this part of the building, but if the shadowing evening light it was reflecting the blue sky giving it the even more unique variations. The MoPOP certainly gives no end to photographic angles. This is another of my series from last summer when I took my camera to the Seattle Center after working a project in the area. I don't like to miss any opportunity for places I don't often get to visit whether they be 50 miles away or thousands. . May '22 . Bank of America Corporate Center from Romare Bearden park, Charlotte, NC. I ended my road trip around the southern (southeastern) USA last year in Charlotte, NC. Mostly to visit my nephew and family. But their being aware of my fondness for photography we spent some time in the city where the kids could play and I could take some pics while we talked and visited. Despite the southern heat (why was I in the south during the summer!?!?!), it was a good time that I enjoyed very much. They showed me Romare Bearden park and then walked around the city center. I definitely like this park for the various artistic areas including the fountains and sculptures. An new urban feel with a lot of green grass and trees in the heart of the city. I hear they have various entertainment festivals here which would be a perfect way to spend an evening. All-in-all a good day. . Jul '22 . Somehow sharing this pic on a rainy day in the Pacific NW felt right to me. Maybe because as I remember it, I took this pic on a rainy day in the Pacific NW (or at least it was cloudy). I snapped the pic of this depression glass in what had been my parent's cabin. Mom always liked the colorful glassware and having grown up in the depression she had various pieces. So this reminds me of her - and history. Oddly enough I hadn't looked into Depression Glass before now. I knew it came out of the great depression time but it wasn't really specifically from that. Rather, it was SWAG (stuff we all get?) from various places and even included in some food boxes you would buy. It was cheap to make and often given away free. When people could afford nothing, it was a welcome thing. For me, having grown up with various pieces always around the house it's nostalgia. It's memories. Maybe it's even a touch of childhood home. . Jun '20 . Magnolia Plantation, outside Charleston, South Carolina. Sometimes you get an unexpected surprise when you're taking pictures. Not being from the south, I didn't realize what was happening, but I noted that when I showed this pic to those more familiar with the area they spotted it right away. So do you see what's special about this pic? Nope, not the bridge - as lovely as it is. I shared a pic of the bridge last year, but it didn't have the other visitor present. Look just below the bridge. See the alligator? I have to admit I did not see it at first when taking the pic. I was too focused on the bridge. But all of the sudden there were others around me that got excited (for obvious reasons). Further, realize I'm just sitting on a bench taking the picture and there is NOTHING but a gently sloping shore into the water just a few feet in front of me. There was NOTHING to stop the gator from coming up to me! Granted, I'm a pretty big guy and it didn't seem too interested in me but as someone else commented as we watched, a child or pet could easily be tempting for this guy. Besides this encounter (which I then saw the gator a few more times as I wandered the plantation) it was a pleasant time visiting here. A bit of a step back into the old south. . Jul '22 . The Bridge to Nowhere or so it was called when it was first proposed and constructed. The Astoria-Megler Bridge with Astoria city, Oregon behind. I took this shot from the Washington side using my long lens. I think it gives an interesting perspective from about 5 miles away across the mouth of the Columbia river. The complete bridge is about 4 miles (6.6 km) long. That includes the impressive high parts as well as the lower section which makes up most of the length. At 1,232 ft (376m), the main span you see is the longest truss span bridge in the USA and 2nd longest in the world. Longer than that I think they tend to build suspension bridges. The high portion clears about 200 ft (60m) above the water for shipping. Though in my searching I couldn't find how high the bridge tops out at. The other thing I wonder is 200ft above the water - when? So 200ft above average river height which I'm sure has tidal affect? Mean Sea Level? High tide? Inquiring minds want to know! :) The bridge to nowhere came from the fact that there aren't any major cities on the north / Washington side. But these days it handles about 7000 cars a day which is far more than they expected would use this 2 lane bridge. It completed US highway 101 running roughly along the US Pacific coast from Los Angeles, CA to Olympia, WA. One of the more popular major scenic drives in the country. We took this route home one time just for fun. It certainly isn't the shortest or fastest way home (depending on where you started from of course), but it is one of the prettier paths to wander. . Wormsloe Road, Savannah, Georgia. I've said before that I think we like to say we like nature in its raw form. While that is somewhat true and may depend on the individual, we also like tamed nature. Nature we have cultivated and manicured to be the way we want to see it. We want the pleasant part of nature without the wild part. We don't want wild dogs in our house, we want our domesticated pets. A raw jungle or forest is messy but plant the trees in orderly form with cut grass and it seems more magical. And such is the case here. The trees all lined up reaching over the road definitely attracts our likes. The ivy and the moss on the trees adds even more. Our spot of magic in / near an otherwise urban area. Wormsloe is just outside of Savannah and though I particularly liked this avenue of the trees (about a mile long!), it is also a good place to see some history of the area in their museum and historical sites. I like that they showed a range of the times European-Americans have worked the site and not just a romanticized portion of it. . Jul '22 . Another picture from previous years as I watch the cherry trees starting to blossom around here. This is Portland, Oregon's Japanese American Historical plaza next to the Willamette river. Now if I can just time a photo shoot between the fullest blossoms, the weather, my available time, and a good day / time of day. One of the catches that surprised me when I moved to the Pacific NW is how similar and yet how different it can be for timing between Seattle, where I live (about half way), Portland, and other locales. The weather and ecology is overall the same but there are nuances different in spots throughout. So for blossoms they may be full this week in one place but not for another week or so in another. And with as short of time that cherry blossoms are at their peak (especially if a frequent storm comes through and blows the blossoms away) it can be a trick to get the best pics. Fortunately, though we may not catch the "peak", they last for a few weeks from buds to fallen petals and I can enjoy them during all that time all the same. . Apr '21 . Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling as depicted at Disney's EPCOT Spaceship Earth. A snapped this pic on the Spaceship Earth ride (the big geodesic ball at EPCOT). Living on the far side of the country, this was my first time to EPCOT. Since seeing a documentary / promo way back when they first built EPCOT I have wanted to visit and especially to go on this ride. I realize it's not the most popular ride but it is probably the most iconic for EPCOT. So for all the fun to be had, I headed straight for this. It details a history of human civilization and this is one of the animatronic scenes. One bucket list item checked off! The overall ride is quite dark. But I still chose to try to take pics (no flash of course). I think it did pretty good under the conditions. I did run it through Topaz's de-noiser and sharpener. In fact this was one of the first pics I tried my new software on. Overall I'm pleased with how it did, though it does give it a bit of a plastic or painted look for how aggressive I had to set it. Still a handy tool in the toolbox. . Jun '22 . I show all my pics here, or you can follow JUST my travel pics at @DSKwanders. . Sometimes my job takes me into unique places. In this case I had to work in an organ chamber. So many churches today don't have organs at all while those that do usually only have electronic organs. But occasionally I work in one with a pipe organ and it fascinates me. The intricacies of the various ranks of pipes while at the same time the ordered progression of each note's length. I think it's one of the places where the ethereal beauty of music becomes a beautiful real thing in the instrument itself. Or maybe it's the other way around? Either way I like it. . Nov '21 . Cherry blossom season is starting here a little later than is common but blossoms are starting to pop. So I decided to pull a shot from yesteryear for today's pic. As I wait and plan for where I might get cherry pictures this year I wonder how many more pictures I need of cherry blossoms. They're all so beautiful but also mostly the same (basically). Granted I plan on some different locations to give different context and backgrounds, but the flowers are the same. Then I realize that it's true not just for the pictures but the flowers themselves. They're the same each year more or less. But since it's also new each year and coming after the bare limbs of winter it always fills me with delight to see the flowers. It simply brings a smile to my face to see them. The beauty never gets old. Perhaps I don't *need* more pics, but I doubt I can resist. For though they're basically the same they're also each one unique. And so I will enjoy each and every one. . Mar '21 . Flint Creek Recreation Area / Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, Decatur, Alabama Just off the Tennessee river outside of Decatur is this spot as seen from the fishing pier. I just happened on it while starting out my journey that morning and decided to snap a few pictures.
