RARE FISH SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE WILD
Australian researchers have found what is believed to be a narrowbody handfish (Pezichthys compressus) for the first time since 1996.
Narrowbody handfish were first discovered by CSIRO in 1986, and was last seen in 1996, but just in 2009 was identified as a different species. Using ROVs, researchers recorded these small fishes at 292 metres depth, at northeast of Flinders Island in Tasmania. This species is only know from two specimens in the Australian National Fish Collection, collected from deep waters off southeastern Australia.
Tumblr media
In life, the is uniformly pale pink, with no evidence of spots or other markings in types, is also small, reaching at least 42.4 millimeters in length. Photo by Last & Gledhill.
These weird fishes are related to the spotted handfish Brachionichthys hirsutus a critically endangered fish, only found in some parts of Tasmania. While nothing is known of the breeding ecology, or the preferred habitat of narrowbody handfish, it is likely that the prolonged trawls and dredge efforts in its habitat has impacted on the distribution and abundance of this species.

BREAKING NEWS
NOAA considers sanctuary in waters around Pacific Remote Islands
Tumblr media
Today, NOAA announced it is starting the process to potentially designate a new national marine sanctuary in the Pacific Remote Islands area under the Biden-Harris Administration. The proposed area in the central Pacific Ocean includes marine areas within the existing Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, as well as currently unprotected submerged lands and waters, an area totaling about 770,000 square miles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A sanctuary designation would help conserve the atolls, shoals, seamounts, banks and reefs surrounding the Pacific Remote Islands. This area is home to some of the most diverse and remarkable tropical marine ecosystems on the planet, and provides a haven for a host of wildlife, including corals, sharks, fish, marine mammals, seabirds and invertebrates.
Tumblr media
NOAA invites the public to comment on the proposed sanctuary designation through June 2, 2023.

I'm currently writing a paper on signed communication systems in the South Pacific for one of my Uni classes, and there's this one source that's just hitting me different. It's about a man named Kagobai who was the only deaf person in the islanders' living memory, so in order to communicate he just straight up developed his very own sign language from scratch. His signs were only ever documented once, back in the early 1970's, at which point Kagobai was already in his 60s, so he's likely not around anymore, and his sign language probably died along with him.
And like, I'm so happy that there is any record at all of this wonderful man who invented a whole language out of necessity, but it's so bittersweet that the documentation isn't complete and can no longer be fleshed out. And it just made me think about how many individual sign languages and sign systems have probably existed throughout time and went extinct without anyone ever recording them, so now they're gone forever. And that made me sad.

The white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is the largest predator fish in the world, however, the early life history and reproduction of this iconic shark is still poorly understood, in fact, no one has seen a white shark puppy in the wild, nonetheless, recent aerial observations made by drone off California, USA, have revealed the first images of a white shark puppy.
Footage done by wildlife filmmaker Carlos Gauna and biologist Phillip Sternes in July 2023, revealed seconds of a single pale pup, which apparently was shedding its embryonic layer. This record robusts the idea the coast of central California acts a birthing location for white sharks. This shark was stimated to reach 1.5 m in lenght. Many researchers believe white sharks are born farther out at sea, due the elusivity to find pups. This finding means they are likely to born in shallow waters.
