Me, remembering that pill bugs can filter heavy metals from soil:

Me, working on amperi headcanons: Wait LET ME FINI-

I’ve gone over a few times that I like to think that talpaedans are techno-organic, less so being silicon or silicone based beings but being an integration of organic carbon materials and the more industrialised physiology of being a walking talking construction equipment. I have also previously made use of the whole ‘machine’ aspect of their natural biology to not only consider them as burrowers, but also as ant-like burrowers with haplodiplody, this form of sex-determination system being used to expand the combinations of construction equipment that an individual talpaedan might have, but also as a basis of which I form the sociopolitical building of talpaedan cities, in which case we have large city state colonies of ant inspired pangolins recreating feudalism Europe of the 10th-13th century.

But up - until this point - there was not quite a lot of circumstances that would allow for actual metallic components to not only present itself biologically but also do so naturally, so with the heavy metal eating pill bug there’s a source of extra inspiration. Oniscidae (apparently the more accurate name for pill bugs/rollie pollies and literally any name under the sun) can remove arsenic (which is actually a metalloid), cadmium, lead, and depending on sources also mercury from the soil; additional metals that can be extracted from soil are copper and zinc. The pill bug in question would crystallise these ions in their gut and create spherical deposits within them, but since we are not talking about the isopod alone surely it isn’t too much of a stretch to the idea that perhaps talpaedans can use these deposits within themselves to feed into the development of their most notable features, their built in equipment?

Assuming that Poiana Lüncas has these metals and that talpaedans would in fact filter for them, in real world human employed Earth uses of these metals can indeed be of fine use. Both arsenic and cadmium can be used as alloys and zinc specifically can galvanise other metals such as iron to prevent rusting, very significant indeed in industry, notably especially with large amounts of zinc can be used in hardware industries. Copper has a very notable use in electronics and wiring of which motors are included, let alone more refined wiring in TVs and radio. And argueably the more infamous of these metals (at least to a standard ‘basic’ level of understanding) we have mercury and lead, the former being used in many different industries for it’s ability to measure the change in temperature and pressure, and the latter for some solders, gasoline/petroleum and wonderfully hazardous cosmetic items that uninformed humanity has come to be harmed by.

ngl, spent a bit of time trying to find an oxygen-carrier of these metals that can feasibly make black blood but i literally do not know if the colour of oxides is in any way relevant to how oxygen-carrier bloodcells would actually be coloured as i’m not a chemist

But in highlighting these metals, I am not simply looking to see if a techno-organic talpaedan can have galvanised armour nor if they come built in with blood pressure monitors. No no no, I am saying more than what talpaedans eat but also what metals can talpaedans have easy access to in the development of technology, and how one might say that actually interacts with the ant-psychology of utterly fucking despising other colony.

Let’s say that google might be a little concerned about me learning about elements used in the construction of ammunition and radiation protection ehek-!

With the earth tilling that many developing talpaedans need to incorporate necessary metals into their diet, depending on the availabilty of said metals they may be an over abundance for food alone; especially with the pressure of competition of resources in combination with a general disdain for anything extracolonial, a factor that may lead to an escalation of tech development. There is an inherent baseline for technology in talpaedans that would already give their industrialisation a boost, in addition to the materials that may vary on quantity based on the region, colony size, and general population needs. Before long there are city states reinforcing their own barriers and expanding their borders for more and more materials - to consume and to create - to in fact increase and increase the tension between colonies so loud to the point pressure spills like a broken thermometer spills mercury and conflicts arise.

And when everything boils over do they realise that many have to balance the act of raising young and building more weapons, the factor that may in fact be the tipping point to realise that the colonies with the most resources are not only a threat but a threat that can overwhelm on the technological scale and the population number. In spite of how many colonies may indeed hate each other, it is more than worth it to them to compromise and in fact LIVE rather than be caught between the suddenly unveiling superpowers of the world that had previously lay unknown thanks to willful ignorance. Decimation of land is significantly reduced from cataclysmic to catastrophic as entire colonies are rased and in fact dug out into craters, many war-era alliances held to the modern day of Poiana Lüncas. A tithing - remnants of the treaties formed at the peak of desperation - of the youngest generation of adult men stands as both tradition and of appeasement, a colony trade and marriage across many different colonial alliances as a symbol of what had to be done before, sharing resources and rearing while the soldiers fought to live.

And all of this because they got a pill bug diet see this is why ants aren’t allowed to have materials for megaton bombs smh 😞

Family Night

Summary: homemade pizza and a uno game are the perfect combination if you want to meet your in laws.

Warnings: none 😋❤️

You park outside of Pedro's house, nervous over the fact that this would be the first time you are meeting his family.

You knew his brother because he lives with him and to he honest your relationshipwith Fer was really good. His parents knew about you, they heard good things about you and how good you treated their son.

That didn't stop you from worrying about them not liking you and that affecting your relationship, especially because Pedro is a family person.

You check yourself one last time on the mirror of your car and grab the bottle of wine you bought for Pedro's parents, you make your way to the door.

You can feel your hands slightly shaking when you knock on the door.

The waiting was short, the nervous feeling making it seem like it was a lot of time.

"Hola y/n, estábamos esperandote" (Hi y/n, we were waiting for you). Fer say as he opens the door for you to enter the house.

"Hola Fer, perdón la demora, el tráfico esta horrible" (Hi Fer, sorry for the waiting. Traffic was terrible.) You gave him a little hug.

You wait for him to close the door, and both make your way inside.

"Mami esta emocionada por conocerte, Pedro ha estado hablando todo el día sobre ti" (mom is excited to meet you, Pedro has been talking about you all day.) He grabs you by the shoulders and shake you slightly.

"Espero no esté aburrida de mi" (Hope she's not tired of me) you laugh.

He was going to answer, but Pedro interrupted the conversation by greeting you.

"Preciosa, que bueno que llegaste." (Baby, so good you're here.) He was excited for you to meet his parents. He knows you're kind of shy about meeting new people and trying to make the situation more comfortable for you he organized a family night. "Mis padres están en la cocina, ven" (my parents are in the kitchen, come.)

He grabbed your hand and dragged you to the kitchen. His mom was the only one there.

"Mami, mira quien llegó." (Mommy, look who's here.) He says getting his mother attention.

You smile and wave at her.

"Hola, Señora Lopez, es un gusto conocerla" (Hi Misses Lopez, it's so nice to meet you). You feel tense because you really want to make a good impression.

"Tu debes ser la famosa y/n, créeme que Pedro no deja de hablar de ti, es de lo único de lo que habla, Por favor dime Rosy." (You must be the famous y/n, believe me when I say that Pedro won't stop talking about you. You're the only thing he talks about. Please call me Rosy.) She smiles and goes for a hug.

"Espero que sean cosas buenas de las que habla" (I hope he's saying good things about me) you laugh a little looking at him.

"Hola, llego tarde a la presentación?" (hello, am i late for the introduction?) The man that you identified as his father says while he enters the kitchen. "Pero mira que linda señorita, venga Pedro, presentala bien." (But look at this pretty lady, c'mon Pedro, introduce her to me) he says happily.

"Papá, ella es y/n, mi novia. Y/n, este es Fernando, mi padre." (Dad, she's y/n, she's my girlfriend. Y/n, this is Fernando, my dad.) He introduced you in a funny way.

"Mucho gustó, señor González." (Nice to meet you, Mister González.) You put your hand out for him to take. But he went for the hug, just like his wife.

"Venga, hemos escuchando tanto de ti, ya se había tardado este muchacho en traerte. Por favor dime Fernando, no me hagas sentir como un viejo." (C'mon, we heard so much about you. He took too long to bring you around. Please call me Fernando, dont make me feel old.) He hugged you tightly.

The smile on your face doesn't go unnoticed by your boyfriend, that only makes his own smile grow.

"Qué tienes ahí, cariño?" (What you have there, honey?) Pedro's mom asked, noticing the bottle on your hands.

"Oh, Pedro me dijo que les gusta mucho el vino, les traje una botella, espero os guste." (Oh, Pedro told me you guys like to drink wine, so I bring a bottle for you. I hope you like it.) You hand the bottle to her.

She took it, saying her thanks to you for bringing it.

"Ya acabamos con todo esto de los holas y las buenas noches? Estoy hambriento, por favor." (Are we done with all the introduction and the hellos, good nights? I'm hungry, please.) Fer says hugging his brother.

"Empecemos entonces, y/n, Pedro nos dijo que te gustan mucho las pizzas, así que vamos a preparar una especialmente para ti." (Let's begin then, y/n, Pedro told us you love pizza, so we're making some pizza for you.)

You felt so special. His family was doing everything to make you feel like one of them.

"Lavate las manos, vamos a amasar hermanita." (Wash your hands. Let's knead some dough, hermanita.) Fer was the most excited. He loves pizza as much as you.

You both wash your hands and begin with the dough while his parents are preparing the sauce and Pedro is cutting and preparing the toppings.

"Dime algo, y/n. Pedro te trata bien?" (Tell me something y/n, is Pedro treating you well?) His father asks you while you're spreading some flour.

You fix your eyes on Pedro. He was looking at you with a funny expression. You were about to answer, but Fer had other plans.

"Honestamente, yo creo que Pedro podría ser mejor novio, deberías hablar con él, papá." (Honestly, I think Pedro can be a better boyfriend. You should talk with him, dad.) He says with a serious expression.

You wanted to laugh, Fer, and you are used to joking with him like that.

"Venga Pedro, qué haz hecho para que tu hermano hable así?" (Pedro, what did you do for Fer to talk like that?) His father wink at you, catching your joke.

Pedro, on the other side, changes his expression "joder, ahora vas a creerle a este tonto?" (Oh c'mon, now you're believing what he says?) He was serious. "Preciosa, defiende mi honor, por favor." (Baby, please defend my honor.)

"Tu tranquila, y/n. Acá estamos papá y yo para defenderte, di la verdad." (Calm down y/n. Dad and I are here for you. You can tell the truth.)

His mother is laughing with how Pedro is getting worried. Not catching the obvious joke you three have going on.

"Preciosa, por favor." (Baby, please), he says, looking at you.

"No, déjala que diga su verdad, vamos y/n, estamos contigo." (No, leave her to tell her truth, c'mon y/n, we are here for you.) Fernando says, passing his arm around you. You start laughing at this point and so did his father.

"Ya Fer, déjalo" (Stop it Fer, leave him alone). You carefully take his arm away from you, still laughing. "Respondiendo a su pregunta, si me trata muy bien, es el mejor." (To answer your question, yes, he treats me so well, he's the best.)

"Toma, capullo" Pedro came close to you "mi preciosa jamas diría nada malo sobre mi, verdad amor?" (Take it, dumbass, my baby would never say anything bad about me, right love?) You only nod smiling, kissing his cheek quickly.

You push him lightly with your arm "sigue cortando, aun nos falta mucho." (Go back to cutting, we still have a lot to do.)

The conversation after that joke was easy, Fer and Pedro throwing jokes around, his parents telling you about his restaurant, some stories about Pedro and some plans they have as a family.

Once the pizzas were in the oven, Pedro, Fer and you told his parents that you were cleaning and that they can enjoy some of the wine you brought.

While they went to prepare the table you helped Fer with loading the dishwasher while your boyfriend put back all the ingredients you didn't use.

Thirty minutes later you seated at the table, Fer idea was to play a UNO game while you eat.

"Quieres un poco de vino, y/n?" Rosy asked you, serving some wine for Fer, her husband and herself. (Would you like some wine, y/n?)

"No gracias, estoy bien con mi agua" you smile while mixing the cards. (No thank you, I'm good with my water.)

Fer serves you a big slice of pizza, knowing you'll try to grab a small one for the shame of the meeting.

"El más grande para ti, por ser la invitada de honor." (The biggest slice for you, because you're our honor guest.) The pizza looked amazing. It was made with love, and things made with love are the best.

The game begins with Fernando giving Pedro a +4, everyone laughs at him getting mad with his father but grabbing the cards.

"No, cariño. Debes agarrar dos cartas, no puedes poner otro +2" (no, honey, you have to grab two more cards, not pile another +2) Fernando laugh.

"Espera, yo siempre agrego otro +2, esta mal eso?" (Wait, I always pile another +2, is that wrong?) You were curious because you were ready to add another +2 if she did the same. "Pedro igual lo hace" (Pedro does the same thing) you point to him laughing.

He shush you, laughing. Obviously, by the rules, it wasn't legal, but you weren't changing that tonight.

"Para mi que ignoremos esa regla, Rosy, que piensas?" (I propose that we ignore that rule, Rosy. What do you think?)

She agreed with you, even when both Fernandos didn't.

The game continues, and Fernando was the first to win. You play a few more rounds, in one of the rounds you won.

After the pizza is done and you all agree with ending the game, you notice the time.

His parents also noticed the time, as Rosy was getting tired.

"Bueno, yo creo que ya me retiro, estoy algo cansada." (Well, I think I'll better go to bed, I'm tired.) She says, yawning. "Pero y/n, por favor quédate el tiempo que quieras, te quedas en tu casa, espero verte luego, nos encantó tenerte" (Y/n, please stay as long as you want, you're on your home, I hope I see you later, we love having you here.) She hugs you and say her goodbyes to her kids.

Fernando and Pedro pick the table while Fer and you get the cards on place.

"Dame, llevare esto a la cocina." (Here, let me take this to the kitchen.) You say picking the wine glasses. "Puedes poner mi teléfono a cargar? Esta a punto de morir." (Can you charge my phone, it's about to die).

"Vale, no hay problema, no quieres ayuda con eso?" (Okay, no problem, you sure you don't need help?) You say a quick no and walk over to the kitchen.

"Creo que tomaste una buena decision, hijo." "Y/n, es muy especial para mi, me alegro que la quieran." (I think you made the right choice.) (Y/n is very special to me, Im happy you liked her.) You heard the voice of your boyfriend and his father.

You stopped in your tracks, obviously hearing other people conversation was wrong, but you wanted to know if you did a good job.

"Bromeas? La adoramos, hijo. Es perfecta para ti e incluso tu hermano la adora. Por favor portate bien, ella lo vale. Además sabe escoger vino, cuidala por favor." (You're kidding? We love her, she's perfect for you and even your brother loves her. Please behave, she's worthy. Plus, she's good at picking wine.) Pedro laughs with his last words. Thanking his father for the words and promises to behave.

You feel so happy with his words. Giving a good impression was all you wanted, and you got it.

"Pedro, estas aquí?" (Pedro, you're here?) You say acting like you weren't listening to them. "Traje las copas" (I got the glasses.) You leave them in the counter, turning your body to the two men. "Señor González,fue un placer conocerlo." (Mister González it was so nice to meet you.)

"Ey, en que quedamos?" (Hey what did I say?) He points at you.

"Perdón, Fernando." You laugh.

"Fue muy bueno conocer por fin a la que trae a mi Pedro como niño enamorado." (It was so nice meeting the one that has my Pedro like a kid in love.) He pinch his cheek making Pedro blush.

He excuse himself, going upstairs to where his wife is, ready to go to bed as well.

"Bueno, no fue tan malo como creías, no?" (It wasn't that bad, right?) Pedro asks you, hugging you tightly. "Te quieren tanto como yo a ti, no puede ser mejor." (They love you as much as I do, it's the best thing.)

Kissing him was the only right answer, you were whipped for him.

All the fears and worries about them not liking you are long gone. You feel thankful for meeting someone as good as Pedro.

—Por la forma en que se dirige a usted parece que la considera de su propiedad —InuYasha no se molestó en esconder ese pensamiento.

Kagome lo observó por un instante que a él le pareció largo e intenso. Los tonos de sus mejillas se encendieron un poco más de lo que él le había visto hasta ahora y eso lo sorprendió. Había fuerza en su mirada, a pesar del arrebol que invitaba a pensar en la timidez.

—Usted y yo sólo nos hemos visto dos veces y no me parece propio comentar estos asuntos —ella habló con decisión e InuYasha percibió el modo en que la emoción de sus palabras y su voz lo llevaron a desear ver doblegado su espíritu, cedido, completamente entregado a él.

R.E.P.O. Necromancy Division Blues

@rayshippouuchiha Congratuations, you won my insomnia’s hyper fixation for the night. There was one big benefit to working at the REPO organization, Assistant Necromancer R.D. mused, standing at the side of the big vat of ‘mysterious red fluid’ (Probably the Hemo-divisions spare blood they stole from medical storage. Or janitorial returning lost fluids again. One of them. Until he had a Blood Mage step in and check, he wasn’t planning to touch it.)

R.D. took a deep swig from the oversized coffee mug in his hand- shaped from the bones of one of his earliest failed experiments, the sealed skull of a fire demon kept the chai latte perfectly warmed, without being scalding. Where was he? Right, big benefit of working at REPO. The dress code, and the loose definition thereof. As long as it was mildly modest, wasn’t an active safety hazard, and didn’t flash unmentional bits at random people who didn’t want it, meant that being called in, literally from his bed, meant he only had to grab his non slip work shoes and a lab coat before getting summoned in. He glanced down at his vibrant fuzzy pajama bottoms: covered with the gaudiest blue, green, and teal shark print, and the loose black and gray lab coat and black band shirt that completed his ‘3AM’ appearance and then looked back up and took another swig of chai. “Boss!” looking over, R.D. tracked his personal assistant: Benny B. Language Self Studying 12/01/22

Hello! I’m studying Spanish, Toki Pona, Arabic, and ASL this coming month, so I’d like to share what resources I’ll be using and what goals I have :)

also this is a long post, so I’ll add my requests for info here too:

If you have suggestions on how to use the Toki Pona Dictionary, I would like to hear them! I know the point of Toki Pona is to come up with ways of saying things on your own, and I’m not really interested in... studying a dictionary... but it is a resource I have, and I would like to know some good ways to use it!

Also, I’m lacking in resources for ASL. There are a lot of ASL resources, especially on YouTube, however I’m having trouble finding ones from Deaf teachers / creators. Language is inextricably tied to culture, and that definitely applies to signed languages and Deaf culture! So if you know of Deaf ASL teachers / creators, or ASL resources created by Deaf people, please let me know!

I’m a bit excited because I’ve have inherited a lot of resources for learning Arabic - textbooks, reference books, children’s books, and a book of Arabic stories with a CD! However because I’m a beginner, I’m just starting with these pamphlets from BarCharts Inc:

They are very neatly organized and chockfull of information. Because I also want to learn how to read and write in Arabic, I don’t believe I’ll get very far in either of these pamphlets this month. But that’s ok! The rest of the language will still be there when I’m ready!

I also want to focus on the Egyptian dialect, and for that I’ll be using the Egyptian Arabic for beginners course playlist on YouTube from the channel Speak Like an Egyptian:

Unlike Arabic, I do not have a lot of resources for this language. I really want to learn from Deaf teachers, but I’m having trouble finding resources (at least, ones that are free / cheap enough for a broke college student). I’m considering getting The ASL App:

It is made by Deaf people, so that’s a plus, but there are some reviews that have me skeptical and I would prefer to not learn on my phone. However, I will take what I can get!

If you have any opinions on this app or recommendations for ASL resources (especially by Deaf people!), please let me know!

My cardiophile problem is always imagining what someone's heartbeat sounds like in any given situation.

I'll be reading fanfic or comics and all I can think about is "Oh god their heart must be racing!"

I think about Sollux and Karkat often because I headcanon both of them to have cardiac issues.

Sollux with his dual hearts and Karkat with a weak heart due to his hemo-mutation. Soft human-like organs inside of a hard troll body cannot be compatible can they? I kinda just figured since humans were copied from Karkat's DNA that Karkat's hemo-mutation must be more than just a hemo-mutation since humans turned out so differently.

His heart can have a lot of trouble if he overworks himself or gets overemotional, which is a problem because he's very overemotional <33

Cuspbloods

There are a few weird/cool/funny aspects that I found badass in my world and am proud to retell and take feedback with an understanding ear and take notes. This goes for AU ideas, RPs, and ships. But the subject today will be Cusps Bloods! That’s right, my favorite HS-related subject, consider that I am a real-life cusp baby myself. I rarely see Cuspblood fantrolls, except for a few homies in this community, and I like to do my take on them since I love Cusps. And after finding out based on my B-Day that I'm on the cusp of Cancer & Leo, Im a bit bias if I see a hot ass Cuspblood.~ I will be explaining my take on Cusps, some cool types of them, and how they are seen in the Empire and trolls around.

Note: Some color names/hex codes are based around Fir3h34rt's Hemospectrum Chart and named colors on Encycolorpedia These are my headcanons and are open to anyone to join in on the wacky fun. And when blending colors, I use this online color blender, but you are free to use any other one of your choice. But, if you find another online color blender, please let me know so I can have backup sites to use just in case the current one shutdown.

What Are Cuspbloods?

Well, depends on the definition of cusp you choose, but when dealing with Homestuck, it would be based around the mixture of definitions 1 & 3 for the word cusp when searched on google.

Cuspbloods are trolls whose blood colors transition between two blood castes colors, resulting in new colors and hues, never before seen on Alternia. They are sorta rare, the likelihood of a grub hatching as a Cusp is very slim, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. There are a few Cuspbloods that are in hiding, roaming the streets of Alternia. Either as a Hemo Anon or in plain sight, they can easily be spotted if one is knowable enough to know the telltale signs. Sectoral heterochromia in the eyes is common with Cuspbloods as they reveal the two colors that are used to make their shade, so looking at their eyes can be a dead giveaway (Unless they wear contacts to hide it).

Cuspblood Type & Grouping

There are different groups and sub-categories to the Cusps, these were made to help the Empire record, analyze, and sort these trolls in a more organized manner.

You have True [T] and Fraction [F] Groups, these are cusps whose blood color make-up is analyzed based on the percentage. True Cusps are Cuspbloods whose blood is made evenly, an exact 50/50 make-up of the two blood castes. When this happens, this means the blood was fully compatible with each other and is less likely to suffer blood-related ailments. An example of one is Shuruo.

He is a mixture of Aster #6c00b2 (purple) and Azure #5519ff (Indigo/Blue). Which creates his shade, Han Purple #610DD9

Fraction Cusps are Cusps Bloods with an imbalance between the caste colors that make up their blood. These Cusps are known to have a plethora of medical issues due to this, which in most cases can lead to most of them dying before hatching from their eggs. But, the few that do survive can go on living normally, but requiring more frequent check-ups. An example of one is Voluma.

Voluma is 75% Volkswagen Monarch Red #4e182b (Rust) and 25% Volkswagen Ultra Maroon #7c0000 (Fuschia). Which creates her shade, Pink Raspberry #980036. Voluma suffers from a disorder similar to Hemophilia due to her imbalance and is required to take meds for it.

Now to break it down further is the color combination types within Cusps Bloods. Whatever the placement of the colors on the hemospectrum is will determine the combination type. And here are the main combinations:

Harmony [H] - Two caste colors right next to each other in the hemospectrum are used. They are most likely to fall into True Cusp grouping due to the closeness of the colors on the spectrum, and they are more likely to be Lowblood Cusp. These combinations are very common among Cusps. They are based on how the real astrological cusp works. Example: Shuruo

Doubles [D] - Caste colors that are 2 castes away from each other in the hemospectrum. Also known as the "Dulling Doubles", some of these turn out desaturated and dull in color, which is a clear giveaway to Cusp trolls.

Chaotic [C] - When Lowblood castes (Rust-Lime*) and Highblood (Fuchsia-Indigo) caste colors mix. They are sometimes called "Oddities", which to some Cusps is a derogatory against their muddier hues, these are the most likely to be in the Fraction Cusp Group. Example: Voluma

ACC [ACC/A]- It stands for "Additional Coloration Combination". These are for schemes that are yet to be named, don't fit the other schemes, or involves blood hues made with hues that are not in the hemospectrum (Mutantbloods).

*Note: Yes, Im including Lime cause fuck you, we're making a comeback.

For each Cuspblood hatched they are given a special code that shows what group, type, and color they are.

Example: Shuruo's would TH#610DD9, T is for True Group, H is for Harmony Color Combination, and then end with the Hex code of the color. Voluma's would be FC#980036, F is for Fraction Group, C is for Chaotic Color Combination, and then her color's hex code.

Second: Ivonne. Braxton's wife. Friendly, kind, and smart. She's the doctor among the vampires and helps her husband with his business. She often visits the other families' houses with Braxton for social visits.

~Drausio. Braxton's brother. He doesn't draw much attention to himself, preferring to leave his brother the spotlight. He helps his sister-in-law with the investigation.

Leader: Madeleine. Confusion, regret, and loss. Although she's the leader, she doesn't get involved in the family duties at all.

Second: Rasen. Madeleine's husband. Even though he tries to help Ariel with the responsibilities of the family, he often gets distracted by his wife, preferring to look after her first.

~Ariel. The oldest. Ariel helps Rasen with the family duties, so the others don't have to worry about that. Also, Ariel's a bit overprotective of Rosa.

~Rose. The youngest. A little spoiled and innocent, she's really sheltered by her family.

U.S. Venomous Snake Species and venom info

What are the four categories of venomous snakes?

Rattlesnakes

Copperheads

Cottonmouth

Coral

*Note: All besides coral snakes are somewhat related, and that makes up the pit viper family

Pit vipers have small heat sensing pits near their noses to help them find prey

*Note: Coral snakes are more closely related to cobras and sea snakes

They are regarded as more venomous than pit vipers

How many species?

There are 22 recognized species and 37 subspecies that can all be sorted into one of the categories

*Note: The most common type are rattlesnakes

What makes them venomous?

What makes a snake venomous is the presence of front fangs (not a rear hollow tooth in fear-ranged venomous- different type and not lethal or that painful) and highly modified saliva (toxic/venom) that is used to paralyze, harm, digest, or serve as an otherwise defense mechanism.

Their bites have to either be painful or lethal to be considered truly venomous and significant.

*Note: There are constrictors, rear fanged venomous, and venomous snakes

What makes up snake venom?

Snake venom is a heterogeneous mixture made up of peptides, lipids, enzymes, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (as much as most other things).

Usually are made from at least 20 different compounds to make the full mixture

There are many different chemical formulas for snake venoms depending on species, subspecies, age, morphs, etc. so they will be left off this sheet as all those factors could change the genetic makeup of the venom

This sheet focuses more on the biology and physiological effects rather than the chemistry

What types of venom exist?

There are 4 types of snake venom: proteolytic, hemotoxic (or haemotoxic), neurotoxic, and cytotoxic

Proteolytic is left out of most classifications as it is present in every snake bite, so it is often naturally assumed

Most snakes can create a mixture of different venoms, with the minimum of two (proteolytic as a base to basically upgrade the others)

Example: Jameson’s mamba produces a mixture of hemotoxic and neurotoxic venom

Proteolytic

Made from proteolytic enzymes (break down protein- digestion fluids)

More of an enzyme than true venom or toxin

Causes the degradation of tissue structures

This venom breaks down blood vessel walls and muscle tissues which accelerates the speed of envenomation

You will most likely feel this if it is paired with hemotoxic venom, but not neurotoxic

This is completely dependent on the venom it is paired with to take effect. Less of an actual harmful toxin on its own, but more of an add-on that accelerates and increases the pain

*Note: This type is often paired with Hemotoxic venom in rattlesnakes

Hemotoxic

Destroys red blood cells which directly impacts tissues and organs

Incredibly painful

50/50 on causing or preventing blood clotting (depends on other venoms it is paired with or other compounds in their saliva)

It interferes with blood pressure and platelets (what clots blood)

If untreated immediately you could have cardiovascular failure, loss of a limb, or internal bleeding

Hemo (think hemophilia- blood) attacks blood and cardiovascular, this is meant to kill prey

This is more internal destruction

Works slower than other venoms, so more time to get treatment, but your death will also be slower and more painful

You will feel this bite

*Note: Most rattlesnakes and copperheads have this type

Neurotoxic

Directly impacts the nervous system which can paralyze muscles and damage the brain to the point of unconsciousness/coma

This toxin also hinders nerve activity or impulses throughout the body which can lead to nerve damage

This venom blocks transmissions from the brain to control muscles and nerves, especially skeletal (mostly spine/back) one, which almost always leads to paralysis

It has an immobilization effect, making the body limp or rigid

Swelling is a common side effect

If untreated long enough, this can prevent the brain from sending signals to the heart to pump, leading to cardiovascular failure

Some people do not feel these bites as they aren’t the most painful, but you will feel symptoms start to come (say 15-20 minutes after the bite)

Most will collapse and be rendered unconscious by an hour or two, making treatment incredibly hard

The pain builds and grows worse

*Note: Fun fact, the most deadly neurotoxin is Botox (as by commercial name)

*Note: Cobras, coral snakes, and mambas are known to have this venom

Cytotoxic

This kills cells by eating away at them, eating the tissues and often skin

This is less deadly than hemotoxic or neurotoxic venoms, but can lead to permanent disabilities and loss of limb function

This is regarded as the most painful

Can start necrosis fast, leading to dead and unrecoverable tissues

This is more external destruction

Cytotoxin is a protein that kills cell membranes or makes them explode on a microscopic level in some cases

Regarded as the “flesh eating” venom

If untreated, it can spread from your skin cells and travel through your blood cells to your organs and other tissues, killing you, but this is less common (although some cases result in kidney and liver failure as the patients were not rushed to the hospital or given treatment ASAP)

*Note: Mostly vipers (specific would be rattlesnakes too) have this kind with the occasional cobra

Specific characteristics of U.S. venomous snakes:

Copperheads

Vertical pupils

Triangular head that is wider than the neck

Hourglass patterns down its back

Copper colors w/brown or reddish bands

Stocky body

Lighter bellies (sometimes pinkish)

Keeled scales (raised ridge)

“Pit” area near eyes and nostrils

Babies have yellow tipped tails

Adults measure 24-37 inches long (between 2-3 ft)

Cottonmouths

Semi aquatic/often found in water

Mouth is bright white

Darker in outer coloration

Thick-bodied

Adults measure 30-42 inches long (3-4 ft)

Older cottonmouths are often black

Very little markings or distinctive patterns

Broad, flat head that is wider than neck

Vertical pupils

Baby cottonmouths are brown/reddish with yellow/greenish-gray tipped tails

Rattlesnakes

Thick bodies

Triangular head

“Rattle” or interlocking circular scales at tip of tail

A new rattle every time the snake sheds

Depending on species they can be 1 ft to 5-8 ft

Heat sensing pits

Vertical pupils

Most are gray, brown, and rusty in color

Most have bands and diamonds for patterns

They can fold their fangs easily and jaw can go 180 degrees

Rattle produces sound as it moves fast and the scales click against each other

Coral snakes

Smooth scales

Slender

Adult size is 18-30 inches (1-3 ft roughly)

Most have colorful rings/bands touching each other (common is red, yellow, black)

Most are tricolored, but some are bicolored

Always circles or bands, no patterns like diamonds or triangles (uniform)

Fixed fangs (cannot fold up)

Smaller and sometimes weaker fangs, but larger venom potency

More round heads

Lays eggs while other venomous snakes give live birth

Some are aquatic with flat tails

How much antivenom is needed?

Antivenom is a serum medicine that is used to combat the chemical compounds and physical symptoms of venoms or poisons through antibodies.

One vial costs $1,200-$3,000 depending on where you are located/area of the bite

More than one vial is usually needed to combat snake bites with the minimum of 6 being common

Most insurances do cover the costs of antivenom and uninsured people might get a discount, but there are other financial issues

A big risk is that some people develop hypersensitivity or immunity to the antivenom itself by a few doses/vials in or the second time you are bitten by a venomous snake. You can develop immunities to antivenom, but never venom itself through any means. Also allergic reactions are an issue.

Copperhead antivenom

Most copperhead bites are painful, but not fatal (Still seek hospital help)

For copperheads, 4 to 6 doses are the most agreed upon dose if bitten

This leads the price of antivenom alone to be $4,800-$18,000

Rattlesnake antivenom

Seek hospitalization ASAP

Most time, there will be hourly injections of antivenom until improvement

Doses are going to change by the mL depending on bite and hour, so no proper estimate can be given

The amount of antivenom needed can strain your liver

Worst cases of envenomation sometimes require 10-15 vials of antivenom, so we’ll use that as a spitball estimate

For severe envenomation, the price would be $12,000-$45,000

Cottonmouth antivenom

There is less information on the bites of these snakes, but we will go with a similar estimate for copperheads

Seek hospitalization ASAP

Coral Snake antivenom

Seek hospitalization immediately

The average would be 3-5 vials with a high of 10 in most cases

The price would be $3,600-$30,000
