The boys had appeared backstage at the ghost club. They were together in Julie’s garage about to get ready for the show when Caleb showed up. Now they stood backstage. Not one of them was enjoying any second of being there. It was a lot harder on Luke because the last time he saw you, you had suddenly vanished out of the garage. Caleb taking your place and appearing on top of Julie’s piano. He told Luke that you were, “Okay…for now.” Which did not sit well with the boys. Next thing they knew Caleb blew some magic dust in their faces and they poofed out of the garage.
Now here they were, in some of the most ridiculous outfits they’ve ever worn. Luke’s collared shirt, tie and blazer were too much for the free loose style he preferred. The boys watched as Caleb came down some stairs from their left.
“Well don’t you look nice.” He smirked
“S-Sweet threads.” Reggie was surprised by the outfits they were wearing but somehow they were nice and he hated that fact he agreed even more. Caleb took a nail file and filled his nails in front of the boys.
“H-How’d you know our sizes?” Alex put his hands out.
“That’s your question!” Luke responded in annoyance as he kept pulling at his collar that did not want to loosen up. He felt so restricted and covered up he felt like he was about to snap.
“I know you boys aren’t my biggest fans, and an eternity at my club might seem overwhelming, but I just put you in sweet threads so humor me on this one last pitch. Now for starters…isn’t it nice that you’re all here together.”
Luke looked at Reggie, then at Alex.
“And believe me, everything you two want, including Willie and Y/n…is here.” He gestured to Alex and Luke. Who were confused about what they should do. Alex shifted on his feet while Luke looked over at Alex. On one hand they did not want to join the club, but you and Willie were here. The only people they wanted to be with. “And on my stage, you don’t vanish when the music stops.” Caleb approached Luke. “You soak in the applause for as long as you want. The connection that you will feel with that audience…” He adjusted Luke’s black bow tie. Luke’s thoughts were unsure. He looked like a hopeless puppy. “Will be like no other, I promise.”
Just as he finished the crowd cheered, all excited for the show that was about to start.
“Oh, shh shh. Do you hear that?” Caleb took a step back from Luke. “They’re waiting for you!” A sudden high jolt struck the boys in the chest making them bend over in pain. They groaned in agony as they got struck harder this time.
“Ooh that one looked like it hurt!” Caleb shrugged as he walked backwards towards the curtain strings. “Now let me remind you. You don’t know if playing the Orpheum is your unfinished business. Do you really have time to make that mistake? I suggest you take my offer because the clock is ticking.” Caleb reached for the glass on the tray his servant was holding for him and took a sip. “And Luke.” Luke looked up from the pain. “So is Y/n’s time.” He smirked as he set his drink back on the tray.
“What did you do to her-“ Luke groaned as another jolt struck him and the boys. They were growing stronger by the minute.
“Ouch.” Caleb furrowed his brows. Just then Caleb snapped his fingers and you suddenly appeared. However he didn’t make you reappear gently. You ended up hitting the ground with a thump. You groaned as you slowly sat up with your hands.
“Y/n!” Luke exclaimed as he rushed over to you to help you up gently.
“You know where to find me.” Caleb opened the curtain and walked onto the stage. “Ladies and gentlemen I’m back!” He exclaimed to the audience.
Once you found your balance again Luke could see a look of fear in your eyes. “Y/n?” He frowned, caressing your hairs out of your face with his hands.
“There was nothing there…” You whimpered. “I-I couldn’t see anything.” You closed your eyes, shaking your head. “It was all just pitch black.”
“What did he do to you?” Luke said it more to himself than towards you.
“Luke, you have to get back to Julie.” You looked up at him with tears in your eyes. “You have to…you can’t stay here with Caleb. It’s not everything he says it is. You have to fight it okay?” You cupped his face crying.
“What about you? I’m not leaving you here with him.” He shook his head. “You had to go through a month of losing me that night, alone. I’m not losing you this time.”
He was referring to how he had died back in 1995. You were a mess after hearing the news. You couldn’t get out of bed, you wouldn’t eat, you just didn’t want to live in a world without him. And soon tragedy followed you till your dying breath. Your car flipped. A semi had run into the drivers side after you failed to see the stop sign. Funny how things ended up now. It brought everyone you knew great loss, but it brought you back to your Luke.
“You can’t save me this time Luke.” You whispered and you took a deep breath.
“Don’t say that. We’re gonna find a way and we’ll all be back singing with Julie in no time.” He smiled softly.
“Luke’s right Y/n, we’re gonna find a way okay.” Alex spoke up.
“No matter what.” Reggie pitched in. He smiled your way.
“No you guys don’t understand.” You shed a tear. Luke and the boys frowned.
“Don’t understand what, Y/n?”
“I can’t leave…” You broke down. “He took my soul.”
“N-No.” Luke furiously shook his head as he walked up to you again. “No he didn’t.” He chuckled, but you weren’t laughing. “No…” His voice grew quieter.
“He took Willie’s soul too.” Alex looked down at his feet.
“No that can’t be. He can’t do that.” He ran a hand through his perfectly styled hair. You noticed that it went back to being styled again. “I’m gonna kill em’!” Luke huffed angrily.
“Well technically he’s already dead…” Reggie made a noise of disagreement. Luke turned to give him a look of annoyance. “So you can’t really kill…” Reggie averted his gaze as he trailed off.
“When?” Luke looked at you with a serious expression.
“Luke-“ You began to protest but he cut you off. “When, Y/n?” Angry Luke was not to be messed with.
“Yesterday.” You sighed. “I didn’t know what he wanted to talk to me about. He said that he wanted me to pass you guys a message. He told me he wanted to invite you guys to another show.” You scoffed remembering, you hated yourself for falling for his lies. For falling into Caleb’s trap. “Nothing felt wrong at the time. He showed me the perks of being able to do tricks, he said he could grant me my deepest desires with the snap of his fingers!” You made emphasized gestures with your hands to demonstrate how much Caleb made it seem like this big luxurious thing. “It seemed silly at the time but that didn’t turn out to be the case…” You cried “I-I didn’t think the stamp would be harmless.” You sniffled as you pulled back your sleeve to reveal the purple stamp. Luke’s heart ached at the sight of the purple mark printed on your wrist. He knew all too well about that stamp and what its actual purpose was now. “I’m such an idiot.” “You’re not.” Luke held your hand.
“He tricked you, Y/n. All of us. Besides you were just being your trusting self like you always are.” Luke smiled sadly. “He took advantage of that. He was wrong to do that.” He pulled you into a hug. “We’re gonna get your soul back Y/n, I promise.” He pressed a kiss to your temple.
“How?” You gripped him tightly.
“We’ll find a way.” He dug his face into your neck.
“Yeah!” Alex and Reggie chimed in.
“Everything’s gonna be fine, Y/n.” Reggie offered reassurance. Even if he was scared himself. “I’m scared guys, what if something happens to m-“ You suddenly vanished from Luke’s arms. He tried grasping the air of empty space. His hands wrapped around nothing. You were no longer there. Confused and scared he turned to look at the boys.
“W-Where’d she go??” He whipped his head around multiple times. Trying to catch a glimpse of you around the room. You were gone. Caleb let the boys see you for only a limited amount of time. He had his leverage to uphold over the boys and he wasn’t gonna screw it up. Caleb was willing to do anything to get the boys to join his club.
Before they could panic any more their bodies started reacting to the music that was playing. Caleb was pulling them in by the groove of the beats playing.
Alex was first. His hand twirling his drum stick, not being able to control it. He then appeared on stage, he was scared because he couldn’t stop playing the drums.
“Alex…show me watcha’ got.” Caleb introduced him. He looked around at the audience who cheered but he was nowhere near as happy to be there.
“Yeah Alex!” Someone cheered from the crowd.
Next was Reggie who could feel the music flow through him, he could feel his body move on his own and that’s what worried him. Luke turned his head to see the empty spot where Reggie once stood and watched as Reggie reappeared next to Caleb on his left.
“Reggie…swing it baby!” Reggie played a smooth bass run. The musical connection he’d usually have wasn’t there. His feet moving on their own accord.
“Now Luke!” Caleb pointed off to the sidelines of the stage. Luke had swung his guitar to the front of him. He scowled as Caleb kept magically pulling him closer on stage, but Luke was trying to fight it. He tried and tried and soon he was walking forcefully towards Caleb. He scowled as he aggressively played each note. No control over his own body. You were right this wasn’t what it seemed like. They’d get to play eternity, but not on their own accord, not willing, there was no individuality, no freedom. Nothing.
“How do you like my new band?” Caleb sang. The crowd was eating it up. They were loving it more than the boys were. As Caleb began to scat. You suddenly appeared center stage wearing a hot number similar to Caleb’s backup dancers. The only minor difference between your outfit and theirs was the lack of feathers and extra accessories. Caleb made you look less ridiculous than his dancers. A purple two piece that coordinated with the boys suits, the added beads and jewels color coordinated with their suits. As someone who was from the 90′s, the heels Caleb put you in were new. Never in your life would you ever wear heels. You could never walk in them. High tops were always the move, not the three - four inch heels you wore. Yet as you moved, not on your own accord, but by whatever Caleb was making you do. You moved gracefully. Twirling and kicking a leg up in the air. Swinging to the music.
Luke’s eyes widened as he watched you go into a sudden split. You got up and then danced over to him. Your hands ran across his shoulders, and your hips swayed side to side. You were not enjoying one bit about this. Luke’s eyes displayed how grateful he was to see you again. Yet they feigned hurt because this wasn’t what neither of you wanted. Caleb smirked at the two of you, then snapped his fingers as he sang.
Luke had stopped playing which caused him to wonder why, but he soon realized why. His hand immediately reached out for yours, suddenly twirling you in circles three times. He was surprised by how you didn’t get dizzy. He knew that you weren’t loving this either, he knew that you had two left feet, but Caleb made you move so elegantly no one would ever know that in reality you couldn’t actually dance. You stopped spinning and then Luke spun you out and then in. For the ending drum hit that Alex played, Caleb made Luke dip you into his left knee then bring you back up. Your head hung back as he dipped you. Luke supported the back of your head as you went down, then right back up. Chest against chest. The motion was quick and sudden. You breathed heavily as your hands rested on his shoulders and your left leg lifted against his hip. Luke’s right hand caressed your exposed skin on your left thigh as he held it up against his side.
You could feel his hot breath against your cheek. Luke had turned his head briefly then looked right back at you. Your breath was taken away by his moves, it had caught you off guard. Luke wasn’t gonna lie, even in the ridiculous outfits they were in, you managed to look even more beautiful. You were breathtaking the moment you appeared on stage. If the circumstances were different, Luke would have showered you with kisses. He wouldn’t have hesitated to take your lower lip. To take you there and then like he would back when he’d convince you to skip classes with him.
As he reached forward to brush his lips against yours, you vanished into thin air again. Luke almost wanted to cry. He looked to the roaring crowd that he had tuned out, then looked to Reggie, then to Caleb.
He knew they couldn’t stay here, he knew what would happen to them if they didn’t accept Caleb’s offer too. Yet no music was worth making without Julie, without you by his side every time. A world worth living in the afterlife was not worth it without you. It wasn’t worth picking up a guitar again if he was being forced to play in front of a crowd.
He knew what he and the boys had to do. They had to fight.
-
Julie had gone onto the stage. The boys were nowhere to be seen. She grew worried that something had happened. She had an idea but it was too much for her to bear. She was devastated her friends were gone. She didn’t want to have to play alone but she knew that she had too. She had to go up there alone, she had to do it for them. They were the reason she was where she was now. Julie wouldn’t have been able to do it if it hadn’t been for them. If it hadn’t been for you. You were starting to grow on her. She found an equal, a companion, a shoulder to cry on within you. You were there for her when she couldn’t go to the guys about things. Luke liked to tease you and let you handle the ‘girl stuff’ as he put it.
You were gone too.
After delivering her speech, Julie took a deep breath and began playing the notes she knew by heart on the keyboard.
“Don’t blink. No, I don’t want to miss it. One thing, and it’s back to the beginning Cause everything is rushing in fast Keep going on never look back. And it’s one, two, three, four times That I’ll try for one more night Light a fire in my eyes. I’m going out of my mind, Whatever happens Even if I’m the last standing. I'ma stand tall. I'ma stand tall, Whatever happens Even when everything’s down I'ma stand tall. I'ma stand tallI gotta keep on dreaming. Cause I gotta catch that feeling. Whatever happens Even if I’m the last standing. I'ma stand tall. I'ma stand tall.” Julie poured her heart out onto the song.
Alex was the first to appear on the stage with her. She was taken aback, but so happy to see him. He smiled at her as he each beat.
-
The boys were about to play another song but they were trying so hard to stop. Caleb smirked as he twirled around two of his dancers. The crowd were dancing in their seats waiting for another great song.
Alex had looked down at his hands. He could admit that this was now how things were supposed to go. He should have been there right now with Julie and the boys playing the Orpheum, not here being forced out of his will. Music was supposed to come out freely, not pressured out by some old magical ghost. He knew Willie’s soul and yours was taken. Alex was going to make sure that you both got them back, so that you wouldn’t have to endure this place anymore. The song was beginning and right as he was about to collide his sticks with the center of his drums. He stopped. He didn’t know what it was but it was like he could feel something stir within him. Like music…He observed himself, then began unbuttoning his white shirt. He smiled as he was able to remove the bowtie, then quickly folded the ends of his sleeves. The boys were watching him with curiosity, then were taken back when he vanished from the stage. This caught Caleb’s attention. He frowned as he heard Reggie gasp.
Reggie felt like something was calling to him, almost like an echo to his heart, to his soul. It was a light trying to guide him back to where he belonged. Reggie quickly shed off his blazer, feeling like he was wearing too much red to begin with. Caleb took a step back as he looked offended about the blazer being on the floor. Reggie kept the vest on though. He smiled over at Luke, who was also smiling non stop. Then he vanished too like Alex had. Luke laughed as he stared at the empty space Reggie stood.
-
“Right now. I’m loving every minute Hands down. Can’t let myself forget it, no. Cause everything is rushing in fast. Keep holding on nevеr look back.” Julie’s heart felt full as Reggie appeared beside her. Her boys weren’t gone, they were slowly coming back to her one by one. All that was left was Luke. “And it’s one, two, three, four times. That I’ll try for one morе night. Light a fire in my eyes…” Julie grew aware of how much Luke was glitching. Luke was having a hard time trying to appear on stage. To the audience it looked like the ‘hologram’ was malfunctioning, but to Julie and the guys, they knew Luke was trying so hard to fight against whatever was holding him back.
-
“Now Luke…” Caleb chuckled. “Alex and Reggie clearly have some different opinions in mind.” Luke scowled. He pulled at the collar that was suffocating him. He grunted as he ripped the bowtie off, then the sleeves of his shirt. Leaving his whole arms exposed just how he liked it. His chains and arm scarf made their appearance as he looked down at the ripped pieces on the ground.
“Ouch!” Caleb feigned hurt. He placed a hand on his chest and shook his head. “Should’ve stuck with the sleeveless outfit I had in mind for you then, huh?” Caleb clicked his tongue at Luke.
“This isn’t about the outfits.” Luke snapped. “It’s about the-”
“The music. Yes I know.” Caleb rolled his eyes. “But what about it being about the girl too.” Caleb smirked.
“What are you…Where’s Y/N-” Luke suddenly remembered. He began but was cut off when Caleb made you reappear once again, but this time Caleb had a strong hold on your arm. Luke grew guilty at the thought of almost leaving without you.
“Luke?” You were in your normal clothes again. The fear in your eyes was prominent. He was scared too.
“Let her go!” He warned Caleb. Luke’s eyes grew dark.
“Can’t do that!” Caleb sing-songed. You looked down at the torn material on the ground. Then you looked up at Luke’s outfit. He changed his look….
You looked around for Alex and Reggie but they were nowhere to be seen. A smile appeared on your face.
“Luke, you have to go. The Orpheum, remember?” You exclaimed trying to get out of Caleb’s hold. “Julie needs you. You pleaded.
“Not without you!” He argued.
“Yes without me. You made the outfit your own. See! The guys were able to leave. You need to go, Luke.” You smiled sadly. “Your unfinished business, remember.”
“What about yours huh? You’ll be trapped here, remember. You didn’t even know what it was. You said it was something you didn’t get the chance to do.” Luke’s eyes watered.
You did though…You did know because it was the one thing you had been scared to do. To say. Your smile grew as a tear shed down your face. Caleb found the interaction adorable, he just had to roll his eyes at the two teenagers in love.
“Well this is just too precious, but I do have a show to do so if you’ll excuse-”
“I love you, Luke!” You blurted out.
Luke took a step back not expecting you to do that. He was gonna say it back, but he noticed that you had started to glow.
“Y/n your-” He gasped. You frowned then looked down at yourself. Caleb let go of you then yelled angrily.
“No!”
You then gasped when something struck you. You knew that it wasn’t good. You didn’t feel good, but you didn’t want to tell Luke.
You looked down and watched as the glowing hue died down. You glanced up at Luke and giggled as you ran up to him.
“I think I got my soul back.” You muttered. Yet deep down you knew that something was wrong. Caleb struck you with something, but you just wanted to get Luke out of here so you lied, plus it was nice seeing him smile again. “I love you…so much Luke.”
“You waited till I died to tell me…dumb!” Luke chuckled as he cupped your face and kissed you roughly. He was taking the moment to savor the feeling of your lips against his. To make up for the moment that Caleb ruined between you two on stage. To show you how much he loved you. He pulled back and pressed his head against yours. His smile grew every second.
“No!” You both turned your head to face Caleb. “I’m not through with you my darling.” Caleb smirked.
“You forgot about something Caleb.” You smirked too. “And what is that?”
“You went back on your deal, You can’t harm another ghost you mark…Willie is free now.” You reminded him. His smirk faded away suddenly. “You don’t have a hold over him or me. You lost this time.” You knew that wasn’t true. He still had his hold over you, but Willie was free. Caleb promised you no harm would come to Willie or the guys, but he hurt them. So now he had to let Willie go. He was being reluctant to let them go…to let you go. Luke grabbed a hold of your hand.
“I believe we have a show to get to.” He beamed.
“Let’s go then, what are you waiting for!” You exclaimed as you pulled at his arm. Luke grinned, grabbing your hand and then orbed you guys out of the club. Not wanting to spend another second here.
-
“I’m going out of my mind!” Luke finally appeared on stage coming in with his vocals. There were no more glitches or malfunctions. He fully appeared as himself. He rocked out and sang his heart out. Julie had grabbed her mic when he finally showed up. She started jumping up and down on stage. She had looked around for a brief second which Luke caught onto. He looked at her then gestured over to the crowd where you stood in the front row. Julie turned her head in time to see you throw a big kiss at her with your hands. She grew excited and continued dancing around on stage.
“Whatever happens even if I’m the last standing I'ma stand tall. I'ma stand tall Whatever happens even when everything’s down I'ma stand tall. I'ma stand tallI gotta keep on dreaming Cause I gotta catch that feeling, Whatever happens even if I’m the last standing I'ma stand tall. I'ma stand tall.”
“Like I’m glowing in the dark. I keep on going when it’s all falling apart Yeah I know it with all my heart. Ooh, ooh.” Luke and Julie harmonized together. Then Luke sand.
“Never look back!”
“Whatever happens even if I’m the last standing. I'ma stand tall, I'ma stand tall.” Alex stood up and let his voice be heard. You always enjoyed hearing him sing.
“Whatever happens even if I’m the last standing. I'ma stand tall, I'ma stand tall.”
Reggie then sang his heart out next. “Stand tall!”
“Stand tall!”
“Whatever happens even if I’m the last standing. I'ma stand tall, I'ma stand tall, Whatever happens even when everything’s down I'ma stand tall, I'ma stand tall I gotta keep on dreaming. Cause I gotta catch that feeling, Whatever happens even if I’m the last standing. I'ma stand tall, I'ma stand tall…” They finished off slowly.
The crowd cheered as the guys and Julie stood in the middle of the stage bowing. You blew a kiss at Luke and then placed your hand over your heart as you looked at Julie. You were even surprised when you noticed Carried had stood up as well. It had been a beautiful moment to witness. You knew the band was going to be a hit.
You started crying right after the boys vanished from the stage leaving Julie standing alone. You wanted to go up there and hug her. They were the reason why Julie was doing what she loved again. You were so proud of them. Their unfinished business was accomplished. They played the Orpheum. They could finally cross over. You were so happy for them that you couldn’t even be hurt by Luke leaving. Luke talked about crossing over so much you weren’t surprised that he finally did.
But you grew surprised when you and Julie made it back to the garage studio to find the boys laying on the ground in pain. You didn’t even bother to turn the lights on, but Julie did. You were only worried about the boys and why they were still here.
“Luke!” You ran over to him. His eyes were closed, and he groaned out. “I-I don’t understand?”
“Why are you here? I-I thought-” Julie was cut off by the sudden jolt that struck the boys. He held onto Alex and Luke’s hands as they groaned out in pain. Coughing because taking so much of their energy away. “I-I thought you crossed over. Why didn’t you cross over?”
Alex took his hand back silently thanking you for comforting him. “I-I guess playing the Orpheum…” He struggled to stand up. “Wasn’t our unfinished business.”
“Point Caleb.” Reggie said sarcastically. He used the sofa chair as support to hold him up.
“We wanted you guys to think we crossed over…so we pretended to.” Luke glanced up at Julie then looked at you beside him. “We just…” He shook his head, shrugging because he found it silly. “We had nowhere else to go.” Luke looked so hurt you didn’t think holding his hand was doing enough to comfort him.
“We’d thought you’d go straight to bed…” Reggie shrugged looking at Julie then at you.
“And we thought you’d go on one of your walks or visit your parents grave like you always do.”
“Yeah well.” Alex sighed heavily as he leaned against the piano. “I knew they were both gonna come out here but nobody ever listens to-” Another jolt struck the boys. This one was stronger than the last one causing them to curl over and clutch their stomachs. They were all brought down. Luke had to lay down, Reggie let go of the couch, and Alex almost fell to his knees.
“I don’t know how to help!” You exclaimed as you looked over each of them. You had never seen them in pain this badly.
Julie rushed forward and pleaded at them. “You have to save yourself right now! Go join Caleb’s club please! It’s better than not existing at all…please just go, go poof out, do something please! Do it for me please. Do it for Y/n, Luke.” Julie gestured to you, who was on the verge of crying. Luke turned over to stare at you with a look you couldn’t describe.
“We’re not going back there.” Reggie shook his head. He never wanted to return to that terrible place.
Luke stood up letting go of your hand and stepped closer to Julie. “No music is worth making Julie, if we’re not making it with you.” Julie tilted her head, her eyes glossing over his words. “No regrets.” Luke admitted. She reached forward to embrace him. At first you were touched that she even attempted to hug Luke, but your eyes widened when Julie was able to wrap her arms around him. She didn’t phase through him. You were taken back because she was able to touch him. Luke wrapped his arms around her too when she went in for a hug. Reggie smiled and Alex was confused.
“I love you guys.” Julie sniffled.
Julie then suddenly pulled back realizing she could feel Luke. She ran her hands down his arms then to his hands. “How can I feel you?”
Luke was surprised too. “I-I don’t know.”
Julie gasped as she placed her hands on his face. You were in too much pain to care about her touching Luke, you knew there wasn’t anything more to it. Luke then cupped her face too. Laughing because he couldn’t believe what was happening.
He turned to look at you guys. “I feel stronger.”
“Alex, Reggie, come.” Julie told them. You knew that the boys were more hurt, so Julie had motioned them over. Julie wasn’t aware that you were hurt too. She thought you were fine, all of them did. So they thought.
“How can that be?” You said to yourself. You were about to walk up to them when you felt the energy suddenly drain from your body. You stumbled back slightly.
The guys walked up to Julie and wrapped their arms around each other. Halo beams glowed up into the air above them as they stayed in that position for a few seconds. They were too busy to notice that they didn’t catch the sudden thump that hit the ground. You collapsed.
“Woah, I-I don’t feel as weak anymore.” Reggie smiled.
“Yeah, me neither. Not that I was ever that weak.” Alex joked, causing them all to laugh. The guys then all looked down at their wrist. The purple stamp removed itself from their wrist and flowed up into the air.
“What do you think that means?” Julie gaped at the purple magic that floated above her.
“I think the band is back.” Luke smiled.
“You guys think we could try that hug one more time?” Alex asked, they laughed and huddled together embracing each other with their hands.
“I like this!” Reggie admitted.
“Me too!” Julie exclaimed. “We played the Orpheum!” They all jumped up and down together.
Luke was the first to step back from the hug briefly to glance back at you. He finally grew aware that you were quiet the entire time.
“Hey, Y/n why you’d get-” Luke chuckled but felt his heart plummet when he noticed you on the ground. Your eyes were closed. “Y/n!” Luke rushed over to your side. The guys and Julie rushed to your aid too. Luke cupped your face trying to get you to open your eyes. “Hey baby, come on now. Open your eyes for me yeah.” Luke smiled, pleading with hopeful eyes. He gently patted the side of your cheek. “Why aren’t you opening your eyes?” He exclaimed. “W-Why isn’t she opening her eyes?” He looked over his shoulder at Julie, Alex and Reggie. “Y/n, open your eyes. Open your eyes baby, please!” Luke took you into his arms and rocked you. Shaking you and patting your face. No response. “Come on now. I can’t do this without you.” Luke shook his head.
“She was fine….She looked fine…” Julie shook her head. “Why isn’t she fine?”
“You guys were the last ones to leave the club…”Alex pointed out. “Did anything happen?” “She said she got her soul back, but why would…” Luke trailed off as he looked down at you. His eyes roamed over your body until he caught a glimpse of your wrist. He grabbed your arm and pulled back your sleeve to reveal the purple mark still present, still tattooed onto your skin. “I-I don’t…why is this still here?” Luke croaked. “Shouldn’t this be gone.”
“Caleb might still have a hold on her.” Reggie furrowed his brows.
“He can’t.” Luke denied any thoughts. “Y/n was fine, she was fine.” Luke hugged you closer to his chest. “You were fine, why aren’t you fine?” He whimpered to you. He brushed your hair out of your face looking at your closed eyes. You looked peaceful, too peaceful. You didn’t show any signs of suffering. His hands stopped as he suddenly remembered that Julie was in front of him. “Julie, come here.” He sniffled as he adjusted your body to allow Julie to be able to get closer to you. “Y-You can feel us, maybe if you hug her, or touch her, she’ll wake up.” Luke was so sure that his idea would work.
“I’ll try.” The corner of her lips were drawn down, but her eyes reassured Luke that she was willing to try. Julie slowly reached forward to place her hand on your skin. The anticipation was tense around the room. Alex, Reggie, and Luke waited for her hand to come in contact with your skin, but all she was met with was air. Her hand had gone through you. Luke shed a tear as he watched Julie’s anxiety start to form as she repeated the motion. Her hand still went through. He gently stopped her hand and shook his head. Luke reassured her through his teary eyes.
“Could you guys give me…” Luke gestured to you. “I just want to be alone with her right now.”
“Luke are you sure?” Alex grew unsure about leaving Luke alone. No one should have to be alone for something like this. Alex was so fond of you. He was glad Luke and you met when you guys did. After he and Luke had gone through something, Alex thought things were going to be weird, but you never made things weird. Alex was just glad Luke had you. His anxiety was slowly growing and making its appearance. He never did like change. Dying had been a big change, now you were not waking up. He didn’t know how he’d be able to handle this. He was concerned for Luke because Luke never really showed anyone how he was feeling. He’d bottle things up, so staying calm right now was worrying Alex.
“Alex please…” Luke’s glossed over eyes peered up to look into his. Luke averted his gaze and glanced down to look at you again. His thumb caressing over your cheek.
“We’ll be outside okay.” Julie stood up and placed her hand on Luke’s shoulder before she guided Reggie and Alex out of the garage closing the doors behind her.
As soon as the doors closed Luke immediately broke down. Tear after tear fell down his face. He hugged you closer, rocking you in his arms as he dug his face into the side of your neck. “I’m so sorry baby.” He muttered into your neck. “I’m so sorry.” He pulled back to look at you. “I-I didn’t even tell you I loved you.” He shook his head. He hated himself for not saying it back at the club. He had kissed you instead, he didn’t say it, not even when you guys were in school. “God I love you…I love you so much. I should have told you sooner, I should’ve told you after our first date. I should’ve told you when you were there for me after I ran away. I should’ve…” He cried. He clenched his jaw, closing his eyes as he rested his face on the crook of your neck. He just held you. Trying to embrace you closer, there wasn’t any more room to possibly hold you against him closer. He kept readjusting his arms around you to hug you. He sniffled, small cries filled the quiet studio.
Julie, Reggie, and Alex, could hear him through the doors. Each shedding their own tears. Each filled with sorrow and pain.
Luke couldn’t move. He stayed sitting on the floor. Holding your body up. He began muttering words that slowly turned into a song. “When I can’t think of the right words to say…I just sing oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh.” He sniffled as he rocked you. “Come on and harmonize with my melody and we’ll sing oh oh oh oh oh oh oh…” He pulled back to get a view of you. “Ain’t it a perfect harmony. You got me.” He waited to hear you sing your part back to him, but you didn’t. “I got you.” He whispered. “I got you.” He nodded. “You got me. Yeah you got me.” A tear fell down his cheek. “I got you. A perfect harmony…” You two would always finish off harmonizing but you didn’t sing your parts, so Luke’s voice alone didn’t create that magical sound that made your voices mix so perfectly. “I love you so much…” He dug his face into the crook of your neck sobbing. He had been too lost in his own thoughts he didn’t notice the purple mark leave your body. The magical trace that was printed on your skin flowed into the air. Caleb’s mark was gone.
“You waited till I died to tell me….” You rasped. The glowing hue came back and took over your body. “Dumb.” Luke gasped as he pulled back and gaped at you with wide eyes.
You sighed as you slowly opened your eyes squinting at the lights that were too bright at the moment. Luke cupped your face as you tried sitting up, but you found yourself on his lap instead. Luke looked relieved and on the verge of happy tears. You placed your hands over his cupped ones and smiled. You were so tired and your head hurt from the fall.
“Oh my god!” Luke exclaimed as he checked you over to make sure nothing else was wrong. “Guys get in here!” Luke yelled out. The three outside gave each other looks of concern as they opened the doors and rushed in. They all stopped mid run once they saw you awake. “Oh my god. You’re okay!” He held your face in his hands. His eyes gleaming over with tears of joy. “God I love you so much.”
“What just happened?” Julie was confused because the light in you dimmed not too long ago.
“I’m free.” You gasped. You looked down at your forearm, running your palm over the area where the mark had been.
“Does that mean that…” Alex trailed off as he stopped to think for a minute. “Willie? Is he-”
“He’s okay Alex.” You smiled as you caught sight of someone entering the studio.
“Alex.” Everyone turned around as Willie suddenly appeared. Alex stood still for a moment as he ran up to him and hugged him. They pulled back and shared a hesitatant kiss.
“You’re okay.” Alex laughed. “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
“Likewise hotdog.” Willie smiled at the happy blonde.
Luke couldn’t help but smile at his best friend then look over at you.
“I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t woken up.” He ran a hand through your hair.
“Hey, you got me.” You sang as you cupped his face gently. He smiled as he pressed his head against yours.
“I got you.” He harmonized with you. You laughed and pressed a tender kiss to his lips.
“I want love!” Julie pouted. Blurting out her inner thoughts causing everyone in the room to laugh.
“You’ll get there soon kiddo.” You laughed as you reassured her. “You’ll get there soon.” You smiled fondly at Luke.

little things in the wonka score/soundtrack that get me every time: a post made by a music major with severe brainrot (seriously it’s getting bad)
• even though i’m not sure how to feel abt what they did orchestrally to pure imagination when it was sung in full, i loved the way it was interwoven until then-the opening credits, the clock tower chiming its intro, etc
• when the intro to hatful of dreams ends and the instrumental HITS. that was the moment i was sitting in the theater like “…oh i’m going to be so charmed by this movie huh”
• something abt the way timmy sings “i’ve put everything i’ve got into my choc’late”. see above bullet point
• welcome to scrubbit’s has no right to be that much of a banger
• the low brass in scrub scrub HELLOOOOO?!?!? the chromatic slides. the muted trumpets. abacus’ bass moments (go off king). the song is literally about laundry and yet IT GOES SO HARD
• walk into the club on a friday night like FIRST YOU PICK UP THE APPAREL AND YOU
• the instrumental of ynhclt that plays while everyone’s flying is so cheesy and so golden-age-of-hollywood-children’s-musical and i cannot help but smile
• the cuh-lassic “one instrument at a time” opening of sweet tooth
• mathew baynton’s voice. that’s it that’s the bullet point.
• #GiveTheCartelMoreTight3PartHarmonies2k24
• well we’ve got lots and lots and lots and loTS AND LOTS AND LOWHY AM I SINGINGGGGGGG
• somethin about how the “noodle noodle” countermelody is a sort of arpeggiated outline of each chord, like a vocal warmup, like he’s letting her take the melody bc he knows she will in time. i’m gonna sob they’re literally family
• the orchestration of for a moment, esp while they’re dancing on the rooftop, just SOARS. idk if anyone here has seen mr magorium’s wonder emporium but that movie shaped my childhood, it’s probably my favorite film score ever, and this instrumental bit is SOOOO reminiscent of it
• clock tower. a fifty-second masterpiece
• CHOCOPOCALYPSE. (for those of us who were on the theatre kid side of the internet in 2018, i think chocopocalypse should be the new calculust. hear me out)
• mat’s voice gets a second bullet point bc what the hell man. literally the sonic embodiment of dark mint chocolate. h e l p m e
• …#fickelgruberisathinmint2k24
• noodle’s portion of ynhclt, while she’s teaching willy to read, has a few instrumental nods to mozart’s famous sonata in c, a typical piece for piano beginners-kids-to learn. in the 1971 film mrs teavee incorrectly identifies mozart as rachmaninoff. this MOVIE
• i wish there could have been more, and more involved/complex, ensemble vocal moments
• charlotte ritchie <3 (okay i’m biased sue me)
• the new orchestration for the oompa loompa song is straight fire
• the LEITMOTIFS the fucking LEITMOTIFS!!!!!!!! the opening fanfare that became the basis of hatful of dreams popping up here and there. the melody to a world of your own playing whenever he thinks of his mom. every time we think willy’s safe from the cartel, ope there’s that descending major sixth again.
• (now that i think about it. sweet tooth is in g major of all keys, rather atypical of a villain song. most of the intervals are major too. it’s the trembling strings that give it that “evil” sound. and it fits so well-like, “we’re not completely immoral! time for a fun little tango! there’s colorful lights! killthisguyplsOH LOOK CONFETTI!” they’re so sinister i love it)
• the way that the intro to a world of your own echoes the intro to pure imagination
• THE ORCHESTRATION DURING “chocolate bushes, chocolate trees” etc AND THE WAY IT BUILDS OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOD. MY HEART JUST BURSTS. EVERY TIME. I AM NOT IMMUNE TO CHEESY MUSICALS.
• the!! chromatic!! basslines!! in!! that!! song!!!!!!!!
• the fact that the bridge comes before the second verse-name any other songs where that happens i dare you. just another example of willy changing the narrative in every way
• the fact that sorry noodle is AN ENTIRE *OTHER* COUNTERMELODY that then falls back into the for a moment melody at the end what the FUUUUUUUUUUUCK
• the monks chanting “giraffe. a massive giraffe”. so fucking funny
• stripping down pure imagination to its essence while willy sings it to noodle was a thousand percent the right decision. and the lyric changes for the situation are sooooooo clever
• as someone who grew up with the 71 movie and has been utterly enamored with its music her whole life, i’m not the world’s hugest fan of this version’s pure imagination orchestration; i get they felt they had to do something different, it just feels slightly too modern/disneyesque, but it had the vibe that they intended for the end of the movie
• anyway god i love this score

hey, sorry to ask, but could you do a sdv elliot x fisher reader 🤭 if not, that’s alright! i don’t wanna take your time from ya
of course! :D, im not too into elliot’s story but i’ll go based off of what i’ve seen and heard,,,
pairing: (sdv!)elliot/(gn! fisher!)reader
wc: 1.09k
cw: spoilers to elliot’s heart events, mutual pinning, fluff, gender neutral (no gender specific terms), use of platonic nicknames (bucko by willy), established friendship, friends to lovers
Tumblr media
wiping your brow and setting your fishing rod to the side, you marveled at your small bounty of sea creatures. having caught three fish, combined with your walk through cindersap forest, plus your stops to greet your neighbors had worn you out.
an exasperated sigh flew past your lips as your legs dangled over the edge of the dock, you knew your work wasn’t done yet. turning back to check the clock on willy’s storefront, you were met with a certain long haired man walking by, gazing off at the water. “OH- my, goodness!” you yelled before chuckling nervously, “you scared me!”
elliot chuckled back softly before his gaze shifted back to the sea, “i thought you’d be used to seeing me by now.” he hummed, “i’m afraid not.” the man playfully chided much to your, just as playful, dismay.
you’ve been living in stardew valley for a while now and built up a decent relationship with elliot. he’d shown you around his cabin numerous times, played his piano for you, and invited you to a book reading he’d hosted in the local museum/library in town. he’s supported you too! in his own ways, of course.
he based a couple of scenes in his books on you, inspired entire books off of the interactions you’ve had, complimented you on your fishing skills along with other things of the sort. you enjoyed it, the brief gleam of joy in his eyes when you tell him you liked a song or excerpt he wrote, it made you want the dream of living in pelican town to never end.
you hadn’t realized it but in the midst of your thinking, elliot had walked away. maybe this was why you weren’t used to him, he’d always been disappearing just as quickly as he appeared. you knew he had his own schedule, but visiting his house was always an option, so you’d do it later.
standing up, you decided to pack up your things and head home, briefly stepping into willy’s to sell any fish that you didn’t need to donate to the junimo at the community center. on your way home, you made a took quick detour to the saloon only to be greeted by elliot once again. you ordered and found a seat with some familiars of the right-corner table of the place.
elliot was spewing his usual poetic nonsense which you couldn’t help but laugh at his slurred tone caused by the strong wine he often drank when he visited. sharing one last chat with clint and willy, you decided to focus more on your food, not wanting to be fatigued the next morning. though, you couldn’t help but notice the not-so-subtle glances elliot was taking from across the saloon.
given you’d been doing the same thing occasionally, you didn’t think he was too. admittedly you were a bit flustered and this didn’t go unnoticed by willy or even ‘the romantically oblivious’ clint. “you should talk to him.” he stated bluntly nearly prompting you to spit out your food. “it’s not like you don’t know the boy, and not to mention we all saw you leaving pierre’s with those flowers.” willy added.
you swallowed your food and grinning defeatedly seeing as your purchase earlier this week outed you. it’s not like you weren’t going to give elliot the bouquet, you’d just been building up the courage to.
“you’re the same person who told me to go for it with emily? seriously? i find that hard to believe.” clint grunted, taking a sip from his stein of beer. “okay, well, don’t act like that. you got with her didn’t you?” you huffed back, waving your fork around before hiding your face behind the glass of your wine—that elliot had bought you earlier that night—in even more defeat. “which is just the reason you should go and splay your feelings to elliot, bucko.” willy prodded matter-of-factly, moving the bottle away from your face.
standing up, you placed a pouch of gold on the table. “i’ll do it. tomorrow. and if i don’t! i owe you both double this!“ you announced catching the attention of sam, sebastian, and abigail—who’d just been a room away—causing them to snicker at your seemingly random announcement.
willy and clint laughed in amusement at the bet, “we’ll take it, i could always use a little extra cash, you haven’t stopped by to process any geodes lately.” clint chortled. “i won’t even owe you a silver dollar!“ you guffawed, snatching up your bottle of wine and heading to the door.
Tumblr media
the next day came faster than you’d expected, it almost made you wish you never stepped foot out of that bar with the thought that the night would have gone slower if you hadn’t.
you took your time watering your crops and feeding your animals, hoping that somehow they’d convince you to go give the bouquet to elliot. fortunately you did it yourself, after checking your personal stash you realized you didn’t have enough gold to renovate your home and pay the men for the bet so you’d just have to perk up and confess.
on your way to elliot’s you greeted your friends around town, emily in particular noticing the bouquet and cheering you on before quickly sending you on your way by shoving you out of her house and on your way to the bridge. “you can do this!” she loudly whispered, the giddiness she’d been holding in becoming evident when she spoke. “okay… okay!” you reassured her and yourself.
walking onto the beach, you notice elliot dusting off the old boat that always sat next to his house and luckily enough he’s not quick to notice you just yet.
“ahem… uh. elliot!” you speak out, causing him to look up at you, flashing a brief smile before going back to dusting off his boat. “hello, the weather is just about right for a boat ride. willy says to give it another day though, something about those silly ‘tides’ and such.” elliot replied.
laughing dryly, you nod. “yeah… listen, um, i wanted to give you this.” holding the bouquet down to elliot, you notice his eye slightly widen and you couldn’t help but feel you made a mistake, but you waited for him to confirm your suspicion. “you really feel that way?” the question made you gulp, “i feel that way too!” he said cheerily. letting out an excited yelp, you hopped into the boat and hugged the red head tightly, “thank yoba!” sighing as you slid off of him, elliot gently ruffled your hair.
you felt relived that this was finally off your chest. smiling at elliot, you kissed his cheek and waved a pleased goodbye, breaking off into a run to willy’s not too soon after you left his eyeshot. “i told you i’d do it!” you yelled, swinging the door to his shop open.

Juke Jeudi time! This time you get a double feature. Art and a story! Enjoy.
Tumblr media
Ever since the stamps went away and Julie was able to hug her boys, things were going good in the Molina house. Although nobody knew how or why it happened, none of them complained about it. The boys could still spend time with their favorite alive person (because they still weren’t sure exactly what they were) and happy that they could still spend time with each other.
It was one of those days where things were more quiet than normal. Reggie was hanging out with Ray and Carlos, Alex was probably with Willie somewhere, and Luke was in the studio, working on a new song he and Julie had started. He hadn’t come up with any lyrics, but he’d started plucking out some notes on his guitar that fit with the melody they came up with.
Eventually all his ideas had been spilled out and he left the pages on the piano. He wasn’t sure what time it was, but Julie must be home from school now, right? He shrugged and poofed himself up to her room, hoping she’d be there.
She startled with a jump and rolled her eyes. She tried to look angry but Luke saw right through it.
“How did you even know I’d be here yet?” She asked, barely having set her backpack down by her bed.
“It was just a hunch.” He shrugged. “Whaddya say we go work on that new song?” He asked, a grin forming at the end of his lips.
“I would love to, but I just got slammed with a bunch of homework for tomorrow.” Julie sighed heavily. “And you remember what my dad said. I’ve got to focus on school first.”
“School can wait, Jules. You always get it done anyway, right?”
Once again she rolled her eyes. “Yes, but that’s not the point right now. I need to crank out some of this stuff before we go into the studio.”
Luke rolled his eyes and pouted. “C’mon… you’re sure you can’t just take a little break before working on your boring school work?”
“Yes, Luke, I’m sure. It won’t take long, okay? I promise we’ll work on it after.”
He was still pouting but nodded and sighed. “Fine. I guess we can do that.”
Julie smiled at him and grabbed one of her books out of her backpack. “You’re still more than welcome to join me. I don’t mind the company.” She said, that smile of hers turning into a smirk.
“Oh, why thank you.” He smirked back and sat on her bed.
After Julie grabbed the book, (some Shakespeare play that Luke had unfortunately recognized from his own high school days) she sat up on the bed as well. She propped herself up against the head of her bed, her pillows behind her back, and started to read.
Luke sighed quietly to himself, not so patiently waiting for when the two of them could go out to the studio. He knew that this is what she needed to do though. He knew Mr. Molina meant it when he said Julie needed to focus on school, otherwise their so-called “plug” would be pulled. And as much as he wanted to work on the song, waiting for her to finish her homework so they could still make music together was worth all his time.
Eventually Julie was about halfway done with her reading, which took shorter than Luke thought it would. She set her book down momentarily and decided to stretch.
“Jeez, I should’ve sat at my desk. That board against my back is not comfortable.” She mumbled, raising her arms up.
Luke nodded. “I can’t imagine it would be. At least the pillows help though.”
“I suppose. Thankfully I don’t have much more to read, though.”
“And then we can go work on our song.” Luke said as he grinned.
“And then we can go work on our song.” Julie laughed, grabbing her book again. This time though, instead of resting against the board and her stack of pillows, she leaned up against Luke.
His eyes widened a bit and then his grin turned to a soft smile. “Sounds like a plan, boss.”
Julie laughed quietly and returned to her book. As her eyes went over the pages and the words form sentences in her head, she eventually found herself under Luke’s arm, her head not too far away from his.
He looked down at her, happy to have her in his arms. So glad he can finally hold her and be around her without being afraid that they’d never be able to touch. That they could never hold hands. That this little relationship of theirs couldn’t go anywhere. Now he felt like he didn’t need to worry about that anymore.
Her eyes glanced up and she saw his soft hazel eyes staring into her own. They looked at each other for a second, taking in each other’s beauty, until they both leaned closer and their lips locked together.
After they pulled away, Luke grinned.
“I think this little relationship of ours just got a bit more interesting.”

My Reaction to the First Six Episodes of Wolf 359 (Because my mutuals have enticed me)
@sophieswundergarten @oflightningandstars @acollectionofcuriousreblogs
My curiosity got the better of me. Will I do these for every episode? Will I listen to the full podcast? Who knows, but I hope you like this💕
My Live Reaction to Episode 1:
At first, an ad played for a way more upbeat story podcast involving Greek gods, rainbow magic, and teenagers, and I was very confused because none of this was mentioned in any of your posts.
Yes, yes, Eiffel. Hera forgets what's necessary to sustain human life and accidently made the cabin too cold, hahahaha...foreshadowing.
"Whatever you're up to Dr. Hilbert, best of luck!" Dude is your whole job ominous foreshadowing? Sorry guys, I get half the characters from your posts confused, I just know that Hera is the AI, but Eiffel dude, there's no way Hilbert's not up to something.
"It's not like if she let me have a cigarette, I'd light it and set the station's air supply on fire" Bro, stop.
"The people on the station have serious trust issues." I mean, fair. You knocked over acid, you're lighting cigarette willy-nilly, I still don't know what your job is man.
"Let's see if we can actually get some work done." -Well I know I'm not.
Ooohh... they're looking for intelligent life! 👀 This sounds like a good plot.
Dude I don't think coffee will solve your problem. I'd focus on getting rid of the ominous piano music.
Oh good at least he got his coffee. Oh ew never mind.
Oh no more on the Doctor. I don't trust him.
Wow Eiffel is a terrible employee and now I gotta listen to his training.
1,001 survival tips? That's actually a pretty low amount for space. These tips are also some wonderful foreshadowing though, and very cheerful too. "Failing to remain calm could result in your ✨😍 grisly 🌈💖gruesome🍭 🦋death🥰!" I love that.
Hilbert. Dude.
"A man's life is at risk". Are we sure it's just one man's life?
Okay Douglas. That's his first name.
Wait...is that....the Entertainer? Is the alien transmitting the Entertainer? Something about old timey music...I think that's also the song they play in Westfield after a massacre in the old west (I stopped watching after a while).
Well that was a musical transition. Oh wow the same guy did Douglas and Hilbert? Good voice acting. Yes it was the Entertainer! Alright not sure if the episodes have post credit scenes, but I might just skip to the next episode.
My thoughts on Episodes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 (semi-live reaction because I'm listening to these while I'm working now, but it's really good. Let me know if you want me to split up by episodes or include time stamps in the future):
Okay. They can't shut Hera off. That seems ominous. I'm not sure if it's ominous because the time will come when they want to shut her off, or ominous because the time will come when a bad guy finally figures out how to shut her off. Either way not good.
This also seems like a lot of effort for toothpaste. How did Douglas get hired? He seems like a huge liability. Also, why are they running out of supplies? Shouldn't they have a ship coming to restock them at some point or a return date? They mention "Earth", but so far I don't think anyone has mention loved ones they left behind, a return date, or anything like that.
I like the captain though (I can't spell her name, I'm so sorry).
Why does Douglas (and apparently everyone) hate physical examinations? They're in space. It's not like they can force them to run a mile...right?
I love Hera. "The report was a fabrication! 🥰". "You place too much judgement on the concept of lies... it's only sticks and stones that can break a human's feeble delicate flesh." I love how everyone just accepts this is how she talks.
Big plant? Roots? What is this Little Shop of Horrors now?
Um... what on earth is this physical examination? Why is there so much pain? Why can't it be stopped once it starts? Is this a meta thing where this is the physical examination?
Nah, the one thing I agree with Douglas on is that Hilbert is up to stuff.
Okay. Don't like it. Don't like the plant. It's either a crisis or a lie that's going to eventually be a very appropriate metaphor.
Oh my gosh why does Hilbert want their spinal fluid? Like...why do they need to do this? I get that they're in space but normalize providing reasons for serious medical examinations.
Kill it? What if it's not hostile? But then again what if it is? How does it have an eye? Teeth? Oh never mind it is hostile.
Oh it's still on the loose...Douglas what the heck. A good day? A plant wants to kill you. Have you seen the musical?
...wait. Is that a theme? First the Entertainer plays, now we got Little Shop of Horrors references...is this a theme of season 1? Space musicals?
And...now Douglas is in space. What happened to the plant? Why is that not a priority?
I do love the commander's "No Tomfoolery" clause.
Hey! More music! 🎶It sounds faster and more urgent now. You can probably use music to send coded information. A shame there seems to be no codebreaker on board.
I wonder if Hera understands what it means.
Oh dear. Here goes Douglas. Well, he was a nice character while he lasted. 🫡 And by nice, I mean he was entertaining, but very underqualified for his position. Scarily underqualified in fact, in terms of his ability to cooperate and work with a team. How did he even get this job?
He was blinded by the flare? So is he blind the rest of the show or can they fix it?
Oh dear...Hera...drown in space? Of all the ways to go. And still nothing about that killer plant. Did I listen out of order or something? I feel like I might have.
I like the Commander. Hilbert on the other hand? The worst.
I'm also wondering when/if other characters show up. Are there really just four characters? I swear I saw people posting about more.
I still want to know why they are in space. If this is a research mission, then why isn't anyone giving them supplies? Why don't they have a return date? If it's a survival mission, why aren't they acting more urgent?
Also does...does Douglas or another character nearly die at the end of every episode?
Hera: "Because I missed you."
Also Hera: "I lie 🥰"
And...more ominously cheerful piano music🎶🎹🎵🎹🎶. Which honestly fits Hera's aesthetic pretty well.
Okay Douglas has a clear nicotine problem.
Also. While he deals with his illness, I just gotta add something I noticed: the AI on the ship is called Hera. The ship is called Hephaestus. Isn't... isn't there a Greek Myth about Hephaestus being the son of Hera that she rejects and throws off Mount Olympus? Don't like how that sounds...
Hilbert. Hilbert. Why have you tied him to the bed and left him with nothing but his nicotine? That sounds like a major consent and health code violation. He's not violent or at risk of hurting anyone! Well, I mean, at least not any more than he normally is.
Huh. Hera's not here. And yet she said she couldn't be shut off "even if they wanted to". Weird.
Well at least Hilbert is feeding him. Oh my gosh Douglas is fake taking the pills? I'm not saying taking them is a good idea, but not taking them isn't great either. Why do they have this one guy doing all science stuff? Like he's the medical doctor, but he's also the guy running all the technology and experiments. They couldn't have a different guy to be their medical doctor? Maybe someone slightly less crazy?
Hilbert. Once again, he might trust you more if you didn't tie him to a bed, drug him in his sleep, and say things like "some people need to be dragged kicking and screaming towards improvement".
Yeah what on earth does "Big Day Tomorrow" mean? I'm not sure, but once again does Douglas nearly die during most episodes?
Also tying someone to a bed with a killer plant on the loose seems like a pretty bad idea.
WHY DO THEY HAVE TROPICAL FLU ON BOARD?
What sort of ship is this? And why do I feel like Hilbert might be a supervillain?
500th day around Wolf395 you say Douglas? Okay, so they've been in space for about a year and a half. Still not sure what they're doing up there. Also Hera's "I don't know what I want, but I know how to get it" quote. Very ominous coming from an AI.
I don't like the way Hilbert talks to Hera. Apparently Hera doesn't either...oh dear.
Hilbert you foolish liability, what did you do?
PFFT- Douglas imitating the captain.😂
Ooohhh...mysterious audio recordings!
Uh. Why can only Douglas hear the mysterious sounds? I don't like that.
Ah yes heading down to Engineering. Does the ship have an engineer?
Ugh I wish I could make out what the audio is saying. And I wish it would get louder Douglas. Then maybe I could hear it.
Oh now this is interesting! Wonder what the voices mean?
Have these voyages or experiments happened before?
I suppose we'll find out. Oh that is not a solid explanation from Hera. And again, why are Douglas, Minkowski and Hilbert the only people on the ship? Don't they need anyone else? And what happened to the killer plant? Did I skip an episode? Are we suppose to just pretend that never happened? Is it gonna come back later? Find out I guess.
Anyway, great podcast, thank you for recommending, I had fun listening. I might do more of these later if you enjoyed this.

🔹"It's damn cold out here!" Reggie and Anyone
"It should be E major."
Luke looked up from his guitar and smirked. "Oh so you know music now?" he asked Julie as she sat beside him.
"Well you do," Julie said with a shrug. "Plus my mom was a musician. So was I once upon a time."
"And now you're a graphic designer?" Luke questioned.
"When she died..." Julie stopped, smiling as Reggie appeared, laying an arm over her shoulder. "It was like music died with her. So I took to my other passion-art and design, made a career out of it."
Luke laid a hand on her knee, squeezing it. "Do you want me to stop playing then?"
Julie shook her head. "No, it was hearing your music... even when I didn't know where it was coming from that made me feel okay about it again."
"What about you Reg?" Luke asked. "You like music?"
Reggie looked up at the sky, the gentle snowfall catching on his eyelashes and hair. "My MeeMaw taught me piano and my Pops taught me how to shred on the banjo. I always wanted to learn bass, but we could never afford one. I play with numerators and quadratic equations more than instruments now."
"Weird how we all have some connection to music, but I'm the only one who made it a career," Luke commented.
"Maybe that's why we have this connection," Julie said with a hint of contemplation in her voice. "Other clusters may have another type of connection, or maybe they have nothing in common."
"Weird that we're all over the globe and can still have things in common," Reggie said, and then shivered. "But maybe we can head inside? It's damn cold out here!"
"Georgia boy," Luke teased with an eye roll.
"I'm in San Juan, so I'm with Reggie," Julie said. "Why are you outside in the middle of winter when you live in Canada?"
Luke shrugged. "I grew up here, it doesn't bother me as much. But I came to my family's cabin to get some writing done. Reconnect with nature, help get the creative juices flowing."
"Yeah until you get frostbite in your fingers," Reggie said. "Inside, or someplace warm."
"I think Willie is on a beach in LA," Luke offered. "Though Alex is actually there visiting, so who knows what they're doing."
"Let's go to mine, MeeMaw just made a pie," Reggie said, blinking out.
"Pie sounds good," Luke said. "See you there?"
Julie grinned. "Sure. Maybe we can get Reggie to take up the banjo again?"
Luke screwed up his face. "I'm not one for country music."
"Well you're stuck with us now, learn to love it," Julie replied, blowing him a kiss. "Race you to Georgia!"
Luke laughed as she disappeared, and though he was tempted to beat her there, he decided maybe it would be a good idea to visit while his body was inside. Not that he would ever admit to Reggie that he was finding it cold.
But the steaming peach pie did wonders in warming him up!

Luke and Julie were in the studio minding their own business just making out like two normal teenagers when Alex and Reggie threw open the studio doors.
“Ugh,” Alex groaned and called over his shoulder. “I regret to inform you the straights are at it again.”
“Hey!” He and Julie both protested as Willie came rolling in on his board behind Alex.
“I’m offended,” Julie said sliding off Luke’s lap and handing him one of the pillows next to them without a word. He grinned and casually put it in his lap where she’d been.
“Yeah me too!” he pointed at himself.
Alex rolled his eyes as he sat in the recliner and Willie plopped right down in his lap.
Reggie was already in the other chair grinning like a loon, watching the show.
Alex was distracted by his boyfriend so Willie was the one that asked. “And why are you two offended? You were the ones making out in a public space and I thought we’d decided that was against the rules.”
“Yeah, no,” Luke started, “we definitely owe the rule breaking jar a fiver.”
“We’re offended you called us straight.” Julie nodded at them.
“What?” Alex finally looked up. “You two aren’t straight?”
Luke rolled his eyes. “None of us are straight dude.”
Reggie raised his hand, “I’m straight.”
They all looked at him until he put his hand down.
“Sweetie, we’re not getting into that right now.” Julie reached over and patted Reg on the knee making him blush and jump up. “I thought we had practice today.” He headed over to his bass not making eye contact with anyone.
Everyone ignored Reggie. He’d figure it out when he was ready.
“So you two aren’t straight?” Willie asked.
“When did you figure that out?” Alex leaned forward wrapping his arms around Willie’s waist to hold him steady.
Julie shrugged, “I’ve known I was bi since I was twelve.”
Luke grinned at his girlfriend long enough for Alex to get impatient.
“Luke?”
“Oh, yeah sorry.” He turned back to Alex. “I think everyone is hot so I’ve been thinking I might be pan?” he glanced at Julie again who nodded encouragingly. “At least bi.” He looked back at Alex. “I mean you and I had that thing…”
Alex’s eyes bugged out and he hid his face in Willie’s back who started to howl with laughter, “How have I not heard about THIS!?”
Alex stood up with Willie in his arms and set him down gently on his feet kissing him quickly. “Like Reggie said, we have practice.” He darted off to his kit and started checking his snares for tuning.
Willie plopped back down in the chair. “Well someone is going to tell me that story sometime soon.”
Luke and Julie got up and as Julie headed for her keyboard Luke leaned down and whispered, “I’ll tell you tomorrow if he doesn’t tonight.”
Willie gave him a wink and a pat on the shoulder. “Thanks man.”
Band practice went great for about an hour and then Julie missed her queue to come in on Now or Never and then thirty minutes later she flubbed her piano playing on Edge of Great. When she messed up the words to Wake Up, which they’d modified to make it a whole band piece, Luke knew something was wrong.
“Hey, baby.” He set his guitar down as he looked over at Julie who was looking more tired and sweaty than the rest of them and she’d been sitting the last couple of hours. “Are you ok?”
She sighed and shook her head. “No, I don’t think so.”
They were all frowning at her as Reg reached over and put his hand on her forehead. “Oh no, she’s hot.” He looked over at Luke who was making his way over to her to check himself.
He pressed his lips to her forehead. His mom had always done that saying lips were a better judge of temperature. “Jules you’re burning up.”
“Oh good,” She leaned against him, “Because I feel like shit.”
He chuckled. “Ok, band practice is over.” He scooped Julie up in his arms. “Everyone go drink like a gallon of orange juice.”
“What about you?” Reggie frowned as Luke turned to carry Julie up to the house.
“Dude,” Alex rolled his eyes. “Do you not remember what they were doing when we got here?”
“Oh…” Reggie nodded. “You’re screwed.”
Willie laughed from over on the sofa. “You need any help?” he asked standing up but keeping his distance.
Luke shook his head then paused. “Maybe text Ray and let him know what’s going on.” He glanced down at Julie who had her eyes closed and was leaning against his chest. “I’ll text my mom that I’m staying over here for a couple of days. I can’t afford to get either of them sick right now.”
The guys all nodded solemnly. They all knew his dad had just finished his first round of chemo for throat cancer a couple of weeks ago. Getting either of his parents sick right now would be… bad.
He got Julie up to her room and in her bed as quickly as possible. She was going downhill fast. Her teeth were chattering by the time he got back with some medicine to bring her fever down and a large glass of water.
He held her up, helped her take the pills and drink some of the water.
She looked up at him with glassy eyes as he laid her back down. “You’d marry me if I asked, right?”
“What?” he chuckled as he went to stand and she grabbed his hand tightly, tears filling her eyes.
“You’d marry me,” her voice broke, “if I asked… right?”
He had no idea where this was coming from and this wasn’t the time to ask. The answer was the same no matter the reason anyway.
Luke leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. “Yes, I’d marry you if you asked.”
She grinned. “I thought so.”
He went to stand again and she held his hand tighter. “Stay?”
He’d already agreed to marry her so what would be the harm in staying.
Still, he got in the bed on her other side but stayed on top of the covers so as not to upset Ray when he got home.
Although by the time Ray got home a couple hours later he was shivering and feverish too. Ray got him some meds and reluctantly agreed he might as well stay with Julie who was sound asleep.
She didn’t remember asking him if he’d marry her once they were well but Luke wrote it down and told her the whole story when they were on their honeymoon five years later.

After a couple of hours of flipping through the book, I got through the whole book twice and wasn't able to find a thing. I huffed in anger and rubbed my head in annoyance "Damn it. There is no way I'm going to Caleb for those damn answers." My phone suddenly started buzzing, my ringer being turned off, pulling the phone out of my back pocket, I noticed the caller ID to be Julie.
I swiped to the right to answer the call, bringing the phone up to my right ear I said "Hey Julie. What's up?" She was quick to respond "Oh no. Don't 'Hey Julie' me." I flinched a little at her tone of voice.
"First Flynn gets angry at us and now you skip school? Aren't you at least a bit determined to make it up to her?"
I shrugged while getting up to sit on my bed "Well, Yeah. Of course I am. You guys are like family to me." Julie huffed in anger on the phone before speaking "If that's true, than meet me at my moms studio. Pronto." With that she hung up, not even giving me a chance to respond.
Taking the phone away from my ear, I stared at my lock screen for a couple of seconds before getting up to go put the candles and books back in the compartment.
♬♩♪♩♬♩♪♩♬♩👻 ♪♩♬♩♪♩♬♩♪♩
I walked over to Julie's house and was quick to knock on the door only for Julie's father to answer. "Oh, Hey (Y/n). Julie just headed out back." He threw a thumb over his shoulder and I was about to respond when a small tune of what sounded to be an electric guitar and a bass could be heard coming from the back of the house. I widened my eyes while stating "Sounds like Julie already started without me, I better get going!" Squeezing past her dad I was quick to make my way to the studio.
♬♩♪♩♬♩♪♩♬♩👻 ♪♩♬♩♪♩♬♩♪♩
Once I made it to the studio Julie opened the door and was about to slip inside, only for her to notice me and gesture for me to go in. I nodded my head a bit to the tune of the guitar and bass, only for Julie to walk in next to me, shutting the door behind her.
"Guys."
This caused both boys to stop playing and look at the two of us. Reggie turning around in the process. "You aren't supposed to be playing out here alone" Reggie was quick to correct Julie as he stated "But we're not alone" Luke came up from behind him, throwing an arm over Reggie, pulling him close for a hug from behind " 'Cause we always have each other." Giant smiles sat on the two of their faces as Reggie looked back at Luke and pointed at him, only to quickly bring his hand back down and look back over at the two of us.
Reggie chuckled a little as Luke took his arm back and stepped a few feet away, I went over to the couch as Julie said "Ugh" Before unplugging the amp, I flopped back across the couch, legs crossed on one end, my head sitting on the pillow on the other. Luke took off his guitar and explained "But...but we had the volume level on one." Reggie was quick to throw in his input as Julie walked over to stand in front of the piano.
"But we rocked it, on volume ten."
Reggie was quick to gesture behind him to the amp as he asked "Want us to play it again?" I snapped one of my fingers at him, causing my fingers to look like a gun as I pointed at him while stating "Yes." Luke cheerfully went to grab his guitar, Reggie's attention was now on me, as was Julie's, she narrowed her eyes at me and was quick to say "No." in response.
Luke let out a sigh before sadly putting down his guitar as she unplugged the other amp. Reggie's attention was still on me, as was mine on him. He raised his brows at me, a small smirk gracing his lips as he sent me a wink with a smile showing his pearly whites. Taking off his bass, Luke pointed at Julie "We've actually been waiting for you to get home" Reggie turned around, rubbing his hands together in excitement as their attention was now on Julie.
"Ok, so we have some pretty major news to tell you."
Luke explained as Julie waited patiently for the news "We had a band meeting earlier, and..." Luke pointed at Reggie, as he hit his hands on his thighs in a drum roll, All while making a weird face. This caused a giggle to escape my lips. Reggie stopped drumming and glanced over at me, a smile on his face, before looking back at Julie. "We wanna invite you to join Sunset Curve. And no, you're not dreaming" Luke stated as Reggie cheerfully brought his hands together in excitement, the two of them smiling brightly.
Julie let out a slow sigh, not to thrilled about the idea as she stated "Oh." In a boring manor. Causing both of their smiles to drop as Luke said "Oh, uh.....oh, she said 'oh' um..." he chuckled quickly in fake amusement, now starting to grow aggravated as he's been told 'no' twice in one day. "That's what you say when you get socks on your birthday, not when you're invited to join the most epic band ever." I let out a small chuckle at their disappointed faces.
"Sorry. I'm honored, but I can't think about anything but Flynn right now. She's still mad at me for lying. She hasn't even texted me back."
Julie stated worriedly as Luke looked away "Yeah you're in a tough spot..." Reggie nodded his head in agreement "Yeah" he said as Luke looked back at Julie and asked "So, do you wanna join the band?" Julie's frown was quick to turn into an angry scowl before stating "Read the room dude." And walking over towards me, I stared at her in confusion as she opened her mouth to say something only to get cut off by Luke.
He stood close behind her "Oh come on! We need you, and you need us because you need music." This caused Julie to turn around and listen to the two of them, my eyes landing on Reggie as he looked at Julie and Luke "We found this poem that you wrote.." looking at Reggie, Luke stated "And Reggie and I, we added this really cool melody to it." I watched as a giant smile formed on Reggie's face, causing my heart to beat a bit faster within my chest.
A smile of my own sat on my lips as I stared at him. Luke took out and unfolded a piece of paper as he stated "It sounds awesome." Julie's stern voice now grabbed all three of our attentions, the boys looking away from the paper, as I looked away from Reggie, only for all eyes to land on Julie. "Where did you find that?" Luke was quick to pull Reggie in front of him, only for Reggie's eyes to land on me, rather than the girl in front of him.
"Uh... definitely not your dream box"
Julie stepped forward angrily "You went through my stuff?!" She ended up pushing Reggie out of the way to get to Luke. Reggie fell on top of my legs as Luke was now getting chased by Julie around the piano "I know, but..." Reggie was quick to get up off my legs, a light blush coating both of our cheeks as he looked over at Julie with a smile "Yeah, we can do that now!" I let out a small laugh as he smiled down at me, moving my legs I nodded my head for him to sit down, which he gladly did.
Once he sat down, he put his arms back along the top of the couch, as I threw my legs back on top of him, causing him to grunt from the impact of my legs. "No! No you can't! Boundaries! Give it back!" She slammed her hands on the piano in anger and distress. Luke hopped on the bench seat before stating "No! Hey, you need to realize how insanely talented you are. Ok? Listen to this." He put the paper down on the piano and read it to her.
"If somebody hurts you..."
She tried to grab the paper out of Lukes hand only for him to quickly hide it from her and keep it out of reach. "If somebody hurts you, I'm gonna get hurt too." He then started singing "And my life, my life would be real low, zero, flyin solo..." Reggie nodded his head along with the tune before adding a "Oh-oh" at the end with a smile. Julie and Luke both looked over at Reggie who now sat on the couch with me, only to look back at each other.
"It's a killer melody"
Luke stated, only for Julie to sigh and respond with "I wrote that about Flynn, when she was helping me with all my mom stuff. I gotta go."
Julie turned around and headed towards the door while gesturing for me to go with her "Come on (Y/n)." I sent her a confused look, as she stopped to face me "Why do I have to go?" Julie let out a sigh in slight aggravation "Because she's your friend." I scoffed while crossing my arms a cross my chest "Yeah, a friend who thinks I'm crazy, and calls me a drunk." Julie shook her head.
"You know what? I don't feel like having this conversation right now." She continued to walk toward the door only for Luke to speak up "Hey, what about the band?" Julie stepped outside the door before turning around "Oh....I almost forgot. Stay out of my room!" With that she slammed the doors shut and walking away.
"Yeah?"
Luke asked before hopping off the piano and running over to the door. Luke stuck his head out of it "We will if you join our band." He shouted at Julie. I looked over at Reggie, only to see him giving me a stern look "What?" I asked as Luke hopped back up on the piano, summoning his guitar to play it. Reggie's eyebrows raised as he stated "You know you should help Julie look." I shook my head, all while narrowing my eyes at Reggie.
"And why should I? All Flynn does is attack me about my drinking problems."
Luke stayed quiet, strumming his guitar, deciding to keep out of this conversation. "She does that because she cares, and is worried about you." My angry eyes looked off to the side, not having a response to give. After a couple of seconds of silence, Reggie sighed "Look." Reggie stated, all while placing his hands on my shoulders, my eyes landed back on him.
Reggie's green eyes stared into my (e/c) ones "Flynn is just looking out for you. Just a little harsher than Julie is, because she doesn't want you going down a bad path. I know that right now you'd rather not bother with her, but she's still your friend, so please, try to help look for her? Because it would be the right thing to do." Reggie sent me a small smile, and I stared at him for a couple of seconds.
A groan in annoyance left my lips as I swung my legs off of his "Fine! I'll go." Reggie's smile grew as I got up and marched over to the door. "Just, stay here." I pointed to the both of them before walking out the door and slamming it shut.
*Reggie’s P.O.V*
A smile sat on my face as I watched (Y/n) leave. A warm feeling spread through my chest at being able to convince her to go help Julie. My arms stayed along the top of the couch as I stared longer than needed at the door that slammed shut behind her. The sound of Luke's guitar being the only thing heard in the room until he cleared his throat, grabbing my attention.
I looked over at Luke, the smile still sitting on my face as I moved my arms down from on top of the couch. "Man, you've got it bad." Luke chuckled as the smile left my face, only to get replaced with a confused look. "What?" I asked, Luke chuckled and stopped strumming his guitar.
He looked up at me "Come on man." His hands wrested on his guitar as he continued "You two have only known each other for two days, yet you both act like you've known each other for two years." I shook my head in response to his claim.
"Luke, we barely know each other. I can't have a thing for her- I don't have a thing for her."
I sternly shook my head in denial, but over all felt my cheeks grow warm in response to my statement. 'I don't like her like that. Sure she's attractive. But it's only been two days. Two flipping days!' I felt my heart beat a bit faster just from the thought of her.
Luke chuckled in response before giving a shake of his head "Okay, keep telling yourself that Reginald." I rolled my eyes at the use of my first name, as he went back to strumming his guitar.
My boots came up onto the coffee table in front of me, crossing one leg over the other. My eyes drifted back over to the closed door, only for a smile to tug at the corner of my lips. 'Maybe I do feel something...' the thought stayed in my brain for a couple of seconds, only for me to quickly shake my head 'But she's a human and I'm a ghost. There is no way this would work.' I let out a small sad huff as my smile quickly faded away.
I sat up and took my boots off the table, bringing my feet back down to the floor beneath me. I was quick to move my attention away from the door and walked over to Luke who was by the piano.

leave me alone (if your only words are ugly ones)
a just-because gift for @wr0temyway0ut <3
1.5k, T, Willie & Caleb, Willie & Nick
Willie has a nightmare. Nick keeps him company.
on ao3
Willie is in the house he grew up in, in his old bedroom, and Caleb is there, too, casually reclining on his bed like he owns it.
“You don’t belong here,” Willie tells him, because it’s true—Willie doesn’t even belong here anymore, he hasn’t for years—decades, now—and Caleb has even less claim to it; Caleb should stay in a whole separate section of Willie’s life, one that’s nowhere near Willie’s old stuffed shark or the rug his grandma made or the jars of bottle caps collected on his desk.
Caleb’s eyes are at once soft with pity and sharp with condescension. “Doesn’t it bore you to be so simplistic, William? Why should we have to obey the conventions of time and space when we’ve already beaten death? Here, watch—”
He snaps his fingers, and they’re back at the Hollywood Ghost Club. Not in its current state, though; it’s more like when Willie first saw it. Caleb likes to present the Club like it’s timeless, and it is, in a lot of ways, but that doesn’t mean he’s never made adjustments. The Hollywood Ghost Club of 2020 feels sleek, dazzling, like the whole place is made of silver. The first time Willie was here, it felt more like velvet, heavy and plush, inviting everyone to sink right into it.
He should have fucking known it was a trap.
The stage has always been the same, though, and Caleb sweeps across it in elegant steps, dragging Willie along with him as his unwilling and incompatible dance partner. Willie yanks his hands back and glares daggers at him, as if he has any chance of actually cutting himself loose.
Caleb frowns. “Not even a hint of nostalgia? Oh, well, we gave it a shot. You’ll like this next one better.”
He snaps again, and they’re back at the bench Willie and Alex sat at when they first met. Alex is already there, and he lights up when his eyes meet Willie’s.
Willie glances back at Caleb, who waves him off. “He can’t see me, don’t worry.” It doesn’t make Willie less worried.
Still, he swallows hard and lifts a hand and says, “Hi, Alex.”
Caleb pushes him further towards Alex. “We’re here for you, William, you should enjoy yourself. Go on and soak in every second with this boy who was worth betraying me for.”
Caleb rests his hand on Willie’s shoulder, and Willie wants to shake him off, but Alex would notice, and even though he can’t explain why, Willie is certain that it would be really, really bad if Alex knew Caleb was here. So he grits his teeth and tries and fails to block out Caleb’s voice.
“You could have done worse,” Caleb muses. “He’s gorgeous, William, and he’s so forgiving—that’s convenient, isn’t it? He’s already so sure that none of this could have been your fault. You know, if something goes wrong again, he’ll only blame himself.”
“Leave me alone,” Willie hisses.
Caleb’s eyes widen. “Darling, I’m congratulating you. It looks to me like you’ve got him exactly where you want him. I’m impressed, truly.”
Alex turns to face Willie directly and cups his face in his hands. “I love you.”
Caleb’s hand is still heavy on Willie’s shoulder. “Alex, I—”
Caleb snaps his fingers.
They land in Julie’s studio this time. It’s empty, as far as Willie can see. Caleb takes a seat at the piano and plays a lazy scale, looking all too pleased at Willie’s fuming. Before he can say anything, Julie slips through the door, and Caleb jumps up to offer the seat at the piano to her with a flourish, though she doesn’t seem to be able to see either of them.
She settles her fingers over the keys and starts playing—Willie doesn’t recognize the tune, but from what he’s heard before, it sounds like one of Julie’s old songs, the ones she used to write with her mom. Caleb leans towards her, and that same sick, inexplicable dread from earlier makes Willie sure he’s going to hurt her, so he goes to push him away, except that all of a sudden, Caleb is intangible to him.
He swings at him again, and this time, Caleb catches him by the wrist and laughs. “Don’t look so surprised, William, what did you expect to happen, playing at being alive? Of course the rules change on you. You made your choice, you didn’t think it would be without consequences, did you?”
There’s purple spreading its way up Willie’s arm from the place Caleb’s nails are digging in, and purple dancing around Julie’s fingers as she plays the piano, and purple bleeding across Alex from where Willie held his hand—when did Alex get here?—and it’s all Willie’s fault for introducing them to Caleb and staining all their lives and then insisting on staying anyway, and he's going to ruin something, and—
He needs it to stop. He has to make it all stop. “Leave us alone!” he screams at Caleb. “Just leave—leave them alone, please.”
He doesn’t expect it to work, but Caleb takes a step back from him and nods, satisfied. “If you insist.” He snaps his fingers a final time, and everything stops, just like Willie wanted.
He isn’t sure where he is this time. It’s dark, and Alex and Julie are gone. Willie is disoriented enough that it takes him a moment to even notice he’s lying down, and when he sits up and blinks, all he can make out is Caleb’s face staring back at him.
Nick’s face. That’s Nick’s face, and Nick’s body, now—they were always his, but he’s back in control of them now. Willie never doubts it when he’s actually thinking—it’s easy to see that Nick isn’t Caleb; he holds himself so differently—but every once in a while, he’s caught off-guard, and he can’t help the way those eyes make his whole body brace for pain.
Like he’s read his mind, Nick carefully raises a hand to his heart, a silent signal for ‘hey, don’t worry, it’s just me.’ Willie mirrors the gesture: ‘I know. I’m good.’
“Bad dream?” Nick asks, and oh. Of course it was a nightmare. Willie would feel dumb for not putting it together himself, but after thirty dreamless years, he doesn’t think he can really be blamed.
“Yeah,” Willie says. It hangs between them for a minute, neither one of them saying anything else, until he realizes: “You’re supposed to be asleep, too.”
“I am,” Nick agrees. He doesn’t offer any details either.
Willie doesn’t push for them. He asks, “Wanna go outside?” and lets Nick answer by silently taking his hand and moving for the door. It’s not a talking kind of night for them, and that’s okay, a lot of their nights are like this. A lot of their time together isn’t for talking, it’s just for understanding. Just for sitting together and knowing.
It’s a short walk down to the beach—they’re at Carrie’s house, Willie remembers now, because there are only so many places Nick feels safe, and there are only so many teenagers Mr. Molina can offer to take in, and Nick’s parents still don’t know a thing about what happened, and Carrie is trying really hard, apparently—but it’s enough to clear a little bit of the fuzz out of Willie’s head, to make him know that he gets to control where he goes, no one else.
There are hardly any stars to look at in the middle of the city, but they both look up at the sky anyway, and Willie lets himself inch right up to the edge of contentment, like a kid trying to push a parent’s “you can get your feet wet, that’s it” rule to the absolute limit.
Willie’s just in up to his shins, okay? Practically an extension of his feet. The water isn’t even lapping at his knees yet, he’s still fine. Still safe, still somewhere that he can run out of without tripping. Still somewhere he won’t get carried away. He’s not stupid.
He’s never been any good at it. He’s never been able to sit still, always been after excitement, adventure, risk. Caleb sold a very specific kind of thrill, glittering lights and endless luxury and dancing at the edge of death, but Willie doesn’t want it anymore. He wants thrills like the beats his heart skips when Alex kisses him, like the burning in his throat from screaming too much when Flynn ropes him into karaoke, like watching Luke jump to his feet when he finally figures out a lyric that’s been bugging him. He wants the warm intimacy of every show that Julie rocks, the satisfaction of making Reggie laugh, and this, right now, sitting with Nick and looking at the sky and the water and the windows, finally just breathing.
It’s almost enough for him. He’s almost ready to let it be enough.

Jack & Jack
The Return of the Jacks
By Emma Fox and Kayla Marra
Jack Johnson and Jack Gilinsky make up the power pop-rap duo known as Jack & Jack. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, the guys started making music together in high school, and have continued through the years to now. They went on to join Magcon, a touring meet-and-greet convention for fans to meet their favorite social media personalities. Though the tours and conventions came to an end, the creative journey for Jack & Jack did not. They have released two studio albums since then, a plethora of hit singles, and several incredible EPs.
Now based in Los Angeles, we’ve connected with the talented pair various times over the years, the last time being in 2015. But just this week we were able to re-connect with them before their Philly tour stop and catch up with the guys about touring together again, reminiscing on the Magcon days, Jack G’s recent fatherhood, and more.
We last spoke to you seven years ago. It’s incredible to hang out with you guys again! You originally released the iconic song “Like That” in 2014. What made you re-record it years later?
Jack Johnson: I think a big thing was that it was taken down off streaming platforms because of a copyright claim. The people who know us know this story, but we’ll give you a brief rundown of it. The piano part, in the beginning, was taken by the producer who sold us the beat from another producer. So, that producer got upset and we had no idea. It got taken down and copyright claimed.
Jack Gilinsky: It was off of all streaming platforms for five years, now, maybe four.
Jack Johnson: Then we got on TikTok and saw a big resurgence. We saw the OG one was going viral on there and we were like, “Oh, man!”
Jack Gilinsky: Every time we posted, people were like, “Please put ‘Like That’ back on Spotify and Apple Music.”
Jack Johnson: We were done and had eleven songs on the album. Then two weeks before the album was set to drop, we were like, yo, why don’t we just revamp it? Use more updated, cleaner sounds. Get G’s new voice on there, my new voice on there. Change a couple of lyrics here and there. Make a revamped version. It felt like it was a full-circle moment for the record.
Jack Gilinsky: It felt right.
Jack Johnson: We’re really grateful for everything that record has done for us.
Jack Gilinsky: We’re grateful that we decided to do this, too, because it has 54 million streams, which plays into the whole total Home album streams.
Jack Johnson: At the end of the day, we’re trying to get everyone to listen to the other songs on the project, which we’re so proud of. Honestly, we’re a little more excited for those, just because they’re new and we haven’t heard them a trillion times. It’s been awesome seeing the fans sing new stuff live, and we feel like “Like That” could be a good gateway into the project.
This is so full circle for your OG fans, as well. I went to Magcon, so it’s incredible seeing you guys do this.
Jack Johnson: It felt like a special one.
What was it like being back together in the studio again?
Jack Gilinsky: It was awesome.
Jack Johnson: It was amazing.
Jack Gilinsky: It’s funny because we didn't take too much of a break. In 2020, obviously, we took a little bit of a break because we were basically in different places. I went back to Omaha, and he stayed in LA. Halfway through 2020, we moved in together and had a studio in the house.
Jack Johnson: We would always make stuff; we just never knew what was going to happen with it. Actually locking in on a project and actually knowing we have a vision for it. Knowing we have a deadline we want to release it by this day. Knowing we had tour dates coming up. It really made it feel like we had a mission. It wasn’t just us willy-nilly in the studio, creating little ideas and not following through with anything. It was amazing to be able to lock in again, really on our own terms, make the music we wanted to make and not feel as puppeteered by a major label. As great as A Good Friend is, and I love that project, a lot of songs on there were demos that were sent to us by other writers or other artists. The label was just like, “you sing this line,” and I was like, this isn’t why we started making music in the beginning.
Jack Gilinsky: It was awesome creating Home the album, because every single word you hear and most sounds that you hear, even instrumentally, Johnson’s playing on the piano, I’m singing the lyrics I wrote, I’m singing some of the lyrics Johnson wrote for me.
Jack Johnson: It’s all just stuff that really came from us and it feels a little more personal this time around.
Jack Gilinsky: We’re really proud of it.
Tumblr media
That’s awesome to hear. With “Jack’s Version” at the end of “Like That” you’re really making it your own and taking back your art which is so powerful and cool to see.
Jack Gilinsky: We’re inspired by Taylor Swift, man. It’s pretty awesome to see what she’s done. We had to take that a little bit.
Jack Johnson: We want to set a guideline for other indie artists because this is the indie age we’re living in. The major labels are becoming a little bit less of a necessity as time goes on with how robust social media is.
Jack Gilinsky: Especially for smaller artists like us who have a core following and they support us through anything. We figured there was no need for a big system to get involved and take away what we all started for. We’re just grateful to have our crew and they’re always supporting us, like tonight.
You released your latest album Home earlier this month, congratulations!
Both: Thank you!
What was the recording process like, and what was your vision/goal with this album?
Jack Johnson: G actually lives about an hour away down by the Newport area, which is coastal California. Basically, we would just have three or four sessions throughout the week, and he would make the commute up into LA. We’re with a distribution company called CreateTV. They let us use their studios, and they have these great studios that we were super grateful to use. It would just be him and I in the studio and sometimes it would be a beat that producers would send us in packs, and we would be like, “Oh, we like this one.” It would just be me recording his voice and him recording my voice. I would make the first base mix and get a good reference point, and then we would send it all off to mixing. It was just a very hands-on process. We used to never really be involved in this stuff, as much as we like it.
Jack Gilinsky: Even in terms of creating the project, we didn’t really have a set goal and tried to have no expectations. Like, let’s just get in there and make a bunch of songs and see what happens. We started to make songs. We made one, then two, three, four five, and it started to be like, “Wait, all of these could go on the project.” It was never a thing, at least this year, that was said, “This one isn’t going to go on” or we’re just not hitting the right stride. I feel like we just got back in the studio together and it just kind of flew out of us. Within nine months – we recorded the last song in August, everything was done by September. It just came together.
Jack Johnson: With the whole “home” angle in terms of that creative for the project, there was this stop sign in our neighborhood we would always meet up at growing up. We were like, yo, let’s take our album cover picture there, change the “STOP” to “HOME,” another four-letter word. It was just something that was very sentimental to us rather than just slapping out a random cover art. It felt like it tied a bow on the whole thing with the creative packing of it all.
Tumblr media
We love the album! Everyone out there is loving it, too.
Jack Johnson: We love that you’re loving it. It’s been out nineteen days now. Even in Nashville on night one, it had been out for twelve days, and they were already singing all the hooks. They’re learning my verses; I have mouthfuls in there.
Jack Gilinsky: It’s been crazy, the support has been awesome.
Jack Johnson: We just can’t wait. We know Philly’s going to be jumpin.’ It’s going to be the craziest show of the tour so far.
As Philly always is.
Jack Johnson: They always show out.
Jack (G), you’re currently in your “dad era,” congratulations!
Jack Gilinsky: I am. For the rest of my life, I will be!
How has having a daughter impacted your life?
Jack Gilinsky: I feel like it impacts it in every way possible. It just changes the way you look at the world. Even the most basic things, it changes your perspective on. Specifically working. It was all really, really fun growing up doing this with Johnson. I never really looked at it too much like a job because it was so much fun. It is still so much fun [except] being away from my daughter and Geneva. Thinking about raising my daughter, you’ve got to have a job and you’ve got to give it your all because if you’re going to spend time away from your loved ones, you need to be putting that work in. It makes me look at this a bit differently because I’m really motivated to put food on the table and a roof over their heads. Also regardless of having a baby, we’re just older and more mature now. We got to kill this, man, because this is our lives. We went out on a limb and didn’t go to college, and we’ve been away for four, five years.
Jack Johnson: We almost had a five-year gap, and there’s a very finite shelf life for artists. There’s a window that you have to take advantage of. We’re just so grateful that they’re all showing up, even after that time period. Seeing him with Hayven, I see an extra spark of motivation in his eyes, on top of him just having a lot of life changes, too.
Jack Gilinsky: I appreciate it, because honestly, you said it very well. Having a daughter is the most amazing thing in the world. I’m just really grateful, and I’m grateful that we still get to do this for work. If I had to go work a 9-5 and be away from my daughter every single day like that, I think that would be harder than being with her ten months out of the year and then being on the road for two months. I love being on the road, so I wouldn’t do it for anything else, being away from my family.
You talked about not going to college and pursuing being creative. Do you have a memory from that era or the Magcon time that stands out to you as an “I made it” moment or an “I want to do this for the rest of my life” kind of moment?
Jack Gilinsky: That’s a good question. Magcon Dallas was the very first one. Shawn made me sing a song with him on stage. I was like, you know what, this is really cool. We had never seen the people that are liking all of our Vines, Tweets, and Instagrams in person like that before. I always thought, “That’s a big number,” but it didn’t ever click that there were real people behind each number.
Jack Johnson: It was weird. We just left for a long weekend from high school, and then we went right back. A lot of the boys started doing online school, but we stuck it out throughout our whole senior year and graduated with our class and everything.
Jack Gilinsky: It made it real though, seeing it in person. I think for me, Magcon made me realize “oh shit, this is real.” There’s a career here that if we want to take it seriously. We can do this for our lives. It convinced us to take a gap year.
Jack Johnson: We just had a glaring opportunity in front of us, and sometimes you just got to seize life by the horns and just ride into battle you know.
Jack Gilinsky: Yeah, so I would say the Magcon thing made it real. Like alright, let's take this seriously.
Tumblr media
That’s awesome! We’ve both loved seeing you grow. Last time I saw you was 2018 at a pop-up show in Baltimore, so it’s been great to see you grow since then and it’s awesome to see you back on the road! Can you talk to us a little bit about what a typical day on tour looks like?
Jack Johnson: Absolutely!
Jack Gilinsky: We actually wake up pretty late because we’ve been driving our bus. Johnson drove last night, I’m driving tonight. We’ve been switching off doing two-to-four-hour shifts, we’ll get into the hotel at 3-5am, depending on how long the drive is. Then me and Johnson get to sleep in because of how awesome our crew is, they load in by themselves. We wake up at around 12:00.
Jack Johnson: Well unless the fire alarm goes off.
Jack Gilinsky: Yeah, we had a fire alarm yesterday, it was pretty bad. But we wake up, we workout, come back upstairs and maybe have a bite to eat, and then get an Uber to the venue. Once we show up to the venue it’s straight into this thing called “Indoor Recess” which is an intimate meet and greet where you get to come backstage, we have a good conversation and take some photos. Then it’s straight into what’s called the “Soundcheck Experience.”
Jack Johnson: We’ll actually do our soundcheck and then we wanted to give everybody a little extra something this time around because whether it was in our hands or not, we did have a five-year hiatus, and we feel bad about it inherently. We decided to add the “Soundcheck Experience” where we do a general Q&A with the fans, just have a talk and nice banter with them, and then we do a little acoustic performance just to warm them up for the night.
Jack Gilinsky: Then we do the meet and greet!
Jack Johnson: It’s a good flow of a day. We’re starting to get the science down a bit more of how it’s supposed to run. Usually, we would tour with a 13 or 14-person crew, and we didn’t have to deal with any of these things. It’s a much more busy day, but I like it. It makes me sleep harder at night, makes me a little more locked in knowing that I do have more personal responsibility on this tour. I really do enjoy it because it feels like we’re taking our business into our own hands and being very meticulous about the way we’re doing things.
Jack Gilinsky: Then after the meet and greet we have a two-hour break. I always cook my bison; I eat it every day. Then maybe have a banana, chill out, do our vocal warmups, and I have a vocal steamer that we do. Then it's time for the show! An hour and a half later we’re off stage, we shower, and pack up our things.
Jack Johnson: We’ll say hi to some people outside the venue if they’re hanging around.
Jack Gilinsky: If we have an off day, we’ll do this thing called a crew dinner. But tonight, we’re in Philly, we have an off day tomorrow, we’re going to get a cheesesteak.
Jack Johnson: What’s the spot? We’ve been hearing a couple things.
I will say, my favorite spot is somewhere on South Street, it’s called Ishkabibble’s. They have the best cheesesteak I’ve ever had.
Jack Gilinsky: Bro we’re going. How far is that from here? I need to go, like I want one right now.
Jack Johnson: Okay I’m screenshotting this right now.
Jack Gilinsky: Is that your favorite too?
It’s also my favorite!
Jack Johnson: I’m literally telling our drummer right now – we have to go to Ishkabibble’s.
What do you guys get on your cheesesteaks?
Jack Gilinsky: On my cheesesteak, I order a Philly Cheesesteak and I eat it how it comes. What is it, peppers, onions?
What kind of cheese do you get?
Jack Gilinsky: I think I’m going to do provolone.
Jack Johnson: I will usually do the steak, whatever cheese they recommend, I want to do what the locals do. Then I’ll maybe add some jalapeños, something that adds a little kick to it. I've become more of a spice guy. Maybe some grilled onions in there too. Wherever we end up I’m just excited to get a cheesesteak in Philly!
Jack Gilinsky: It’s going to be great, it’s Philly!
What’s been your favorite song to perform live so far?
Jack Gilinsky: I’m not even going to sugarcoat it, my favorite song to perform live is “Like That,” because every single person who bought a ticket knows every single word to the song.
Jack Johnson: There’s just a different energy. Not to say that the other songs are low energy by any means, the people who have been coming to these shows have been hype for all of them, even the new stuff. I’ve got to say though, “Stuttering” from the new project, for some reason there’s like some crack in that song.
Jack Gilinsky: That’s going to be a hit, I feel it.
Jack Johnson: It’s such a hype one live. It’s early in the set so everyone’s still fresh, it’s just been going up every night the energy’s been through the roof. I also really like performing “September’s Gone” because we have the whole band jamming. Writing that at a piano and actually seeing it live, it’s crazy. They’re all great, the medley is so fun to perform because we get to take a little trip down memory lane.
Make sure to stream Home by Jack and Jack, out everywhere NOW and catch the guys on tour through May!

every time he walked into a room, you had to cover your ears and evacuate through the nearest exit; he wad like a fire alarm. his voice was so loud and his presence was so... aggravating. and that piano of his — he never seemed to tune it, and appeared to know only one song, which gets annoying once you've heard it all day and all week. not to mention his jokes, which barely made anyone laugh, unless it was out of pity. needless to say, louis was someone you didn't get along with.
the feeling was mutual — he didn't like you, you didn't like him. and you were glad to keep it that way. sure, he tried to make you like him, by telling more jokes and playing your favourite songs on his piano (maybe as a truce act, you didn't know) but they all failed; he was trying to win you over with the things that made you dislike him in the first place.
with a sigh, you pushed yourself up from your bunk and clambered down, careful to not wake up your roommates, omar, willy and aasim — although, it was terribly difficult to not wake anyone up, with the racket the shaky beds made whenever someone moved, and how the metal beams bashed against the peeling wall.
as you stepped quietly out of the room, you rubbed at your eyes, trying to rid them of sleep and fatigue; you hadn't slept very long. another nightmare. after waking up, you couldn't get back to sleep and just waited for the sun to more or less rise.
every few nights you'd have a similar nightmare: they all focused on the same person, but each dream made you feel a different way — one night you'd wake up sad, the other night guilty, the next angry. this time you felt guilty and upset, saddened by the memory.
in your head, the visions of a man screaming at you, begging you to run, filled your head. he was surrounded by walkers, almost engulfed, but you could just about see his head over the crowd, eyes bloodshot and sweat glistening over his forehead like honey. before you could see any lurkers pounce on him, you turned around, taking his advice and fleeing. you and him had been running for days now, and your feet and calves ached like hell, almost like you were stepping through the depths of tartarus. the last thing you heard before dashing for cover in the forest was his pained wails. and you hadn't even tried to help him.
you pushed forward, heading towards the courtyard. maybe some archery practice would help clear hour head?
as you emerged into the courtyard, an ashen haze settled over the garden — still too dark to be morning yet, but too light to be nighttime still. puffing air out of your cheeks through pursed lips, you approached the archery tree; a tall, naked tree with a painted on bullseye on the trunk. a black bow lay on the ground and the arrows to match had been stuck in the earth.
upon picking up the bow, you plucked an arrow from the ground and pulled yourself into position. as you stared at the tree and its bright bullseye, you could see many different things: the heads of walkers, of which you could shoot out and potentially save your father; raiders who had come to take over the school and take all you kids for whatever dastardly reason they had in mind; perhaps the bonds of which your father was tied up in, and with each arrow slicing through rope, he could fall down to you and be back where he belonged — with you.
whoosh! an arrow zipped through the air, punching through the tree bark and lodging itself right in the middle of the bullseye. well, at least you knew that if any of those scenarios were to happen, you'd be on-target.
lowering the sturdy bow from your vision, you let out a breath you weren't aware you were holding. when you plucked the next arrow from the ground, you realised your eyesight began to grow blurry and your nose began to run and grow itchy. you snuffled harshly, trying to contain everything that was being let out. but you couldn't see. the bow wobbled in your grip, your knuckles growing white, and as you let go of the string, another whoosh flew through the air, but it stopped short as it zipped past the tree and wedged itself into a cranny in the concrete wall behind it.
finally, you blinked. your vision cleared, but the tears that once clouded your world dripped down your cheeks. with a groan, you brought your free hand up to wipe at them aggressively.
"wow, didn't think you'd suck that bad," a familiar voice spoke up from behind you. suppressing another groan, you swivelled around. god, of course he had to find you like this.
eyebrows furrowed and jaw clenched, you came face-to-face with the boy who aggravated you most.
however, his amused expression faltered upon seeing your own crumbled one. "are you... are you good?" he asked, the happy smile on his lips reversing into a worried frown.
"yeah," you replied shortly, wiping at your cheeks again. "it just... rained a bit."
yeah... louis didn't really believe that. although it was still dreary morning, it hadn't rained at all. a soft chuckle brushed past louis's lips and he crossed his arms, looking up into the ashen clouds overhead. no rain to be seen. the clouds were pale, but not stormy grey.
he looked back down at you, eyes narrowed. from here, his expression was hard to decipher. "i don't think so." his bottom lip trembled as he looked over at you. "what's up?"
"nothing," you replied, sounding harsher than you were meaning to be, and you turned around, readying to pluck another arrow from the ground. behind you, the overgrowing grass crumbled under louis's boots. he appeared beside you and picked up another bow from the picnic bench and nocked himself an arrow.
side by side, you both shot and nocked arrows in silence for a while, until there were no more arrows to shot or nock. honestly? it felt good to just get your emotions out together, even if it was with someone like louis.
you lowered your bow and looked over at louis expectantly, waiting for him to say something. clearly, judging by the continued silence between you, he was expecting you to speak first.
"do you..." louis asked slowly, testing the waters, "feel any better?"
with a shrug, you replied, "maybe a bit." you replaced your bow back on the picnic table and sauntered off.
finally, the sun had risen properly and everyone else had awoken. jobs weren't going to do themselves, after all, and you were on watch, binoculars practically taped to your face as you gazed out of them. staring out at the calm trees and wildlife was a good way to clear your head, apart from archery with a partner it seemed.
a quiver went up the platform as someone tapped on the metal stilts holding it up. you pulled the binoculars away from your face and peered down at whoever it was on the ground.
and there he was: louis. he waved at you eagerly. god, was he lost or something? he was constantly following you around today, like a puppy in need of a home. "you doing okay?"
over the hours, your head had almost been rid of the memory of your ghastly dream. with a sigh, you returned to your old position, bringing the binoculars back to your eyes. "keep moving, asshat," you called down in reply. you didn't check to see if he'd left. you didn't check to see if his expression fell. you didn't check, because you didn't care.
why didn't louis ever get the hint? and you gave him a lot of those, enough that, by now, he should've gotten at least one of them.
that night, your dreams were nightmare-free and you woke up without a worry at all. in fact, your sleep was so good that it took ruby banging pots and pans in your face to wake you up, and everyone else had already hopped out of bed. when she asked what you were dreaming about, you didn't have an answer, for your slumber was just long and heavy and perfect, no dreams that you could recall about it.
just as your sleep had, the day went by in a blur, until you were on watch again, just after aasim. like yesterday, you stood on the wooden plank with your binoculars, examining the dark woods surrounding the school. and the sky darkened, and omar had dinner ready.
Tumblr media
splash! you quickly plunged your spear into the running waters, and when you pulled back with just as much haste, your mouth tugged up into a grin as you laid eyes on a fish, no longer moving around. bingo!
you twisted your body and shook the fish off your long blade, where it landed at the bottom of a bucket on top of a few other now-dead fish.
beside you, louis groaned. admittedly, he wasn't doing as well as you. maybe it was his curse for coming along with you (which you still didn't understand the backstory of — he catches you crying one time and now he follows you around as if you'll crack into shards of glass at any moment).
laughing dramatically, you kicked the fish-filled bucket closer to him. out of the six that were in there, louis had only caught one of them, and you'd just caught another to make the final six. "you're not doing too well, huh, punk?"
louis rolled his eyes, trying (and failing) to contain a smile. he returned to his previous stance, feet apart and flat on the ground, spear high above his head.
"no, that's what you've got wrong," you spoke up, edging closer to him. "instead of holding it above your head and then throwing it down like thor or something, hold it in your arm like this." as you demonstrated the correct — more like luckier — positioning, louis followed you with his eyes, moving his body to match your stance. "good," you said, "try that."
you took a step back, crossing your arms, and allowed louis to take another attempt now that he knew the correct way to spear. he was still for a moment, eyes rapidly following along the current, like a predator narrowing in on his prey. and then his arm shot down, slamming the spear into the crystal rapids, and when he pulled it out a fish hung from the blood-ridden blade. louis's lips tugged into a smile as he moved to deposit the fish into the bucket.
"i think that should be enough," you suggested, extending an arm out for louis's spear.
a sound like an uh-huh brushed past his lips as he leaned down to take hold of the bucket. "i think so," he agreed. "thanks for helping me," he continued somewhat sheepishly.
it wasn't like you were happy for him, or glad at all — well, maybe you were. after correcting and teaching him, he'd succeeded, and it was nice to see that it had payed off in the end. maybe you were... proud? proud of yourself, impressed by him?
tucking the spears under your arm, you began walking off towards the shed. "i'll be right there," you called behind you, and louis went in the other direction, his pace slow under the weight of the full bucket.
after leaning the hunting spears against a wall inside the shed, you closed the wooden door from behind you as you began to make your way outside. a groan from the woods ahead caught your attention, your ears perking up out of curiosity. you gazed out into the depths of the trees. something stepped out into the daylight.
its own skin hung loosely off its body, a sickly ashen colour. where eyes should've been, pale orbs were in their place, trying to perceive everything as they once had.
but those attributes weren't what made you freeze, eyes widening and goosebumps crawling up the back of your neck.
those clothes... you recognise them, that exact outfit. its hair was scarce, a drearier shade to yours, but you remembered that same hair as well. oh god... oh no...
your jaw clenched, lips clamping together although wobbling sadly. your hands balled into fists, nails just barely puncturing your palm. hot tears impaired your vision, wavering as they rimmed the edge of your waterline.
"dad?" a tiny cry left your lips, which tugged into a pronounced frown.
the man flocked by walkers in your dreams was standing before you, hobbling along with his frail limbs, appearing as though he had popped out of an entirely different timeline. this was not the same person you'd survived out here for so long with. this was a monster.
from far behind, a boy's voice called your name. "y/n? y/n! you okay back there?" and his footsteps neared, crumpling grass beneath his feet, as he usually did.
and then he saw it too, just when he joined you. louis didn't make a sound, gaping at the creature.
rain fell, clearing down your cheeks, glistening and glowing in the sun like. your whole frame shook as you tried to contain your emotions. it was like you were throwing up, gagging on your feelings. at this point, you didn't pay any attention to louis, as you crumbled down to the ground with your hands on your face.
louis bent down, taking something off the grass. he wound his arm back and threw it, landing in the bushes far off behind the walker, crushing leaves and rubble off somewhere else. catching its attention, the walker began to hobble off to investigate.
louis watched as it went and turned to you. you weren't exactly friends, the two of you. were you on hugging basis? did you like hugs? would you be mad he'd led it away? regardless of any question and answer that matched with it, he shuffled closer, placing a reassuring arm around you, rubbing with his thumb on your arm.

Forever My Dance Partner
A/N: This is a requested Mitch Marner piece. Thanks to @freddieflower3129 for the help :)
Warning: Drinking, Swearing, Smut
Word Count: 4500
“Hey babe you gonna be ready on time?” Mitch asks coming up behind you in the bathroom. You are in the bathroom hair dried and in the process of curling it, yet to even start your makeup.
“Am I a terrible person for not wanting to go?” you whine leaning against his chest setting your curling iron down.
“You hate when people cancel last minute, do you really want to be that person?” he asks his hands finding your hips.
“No” you groan “I just am really tired.”
“Well we can leave early and I don’t have to be at the rink tomorrow so we can sleep in” he smiles at you in the mirror knowing sleep in is your two favourite words.
He places a quick kiss on your cheek and heads over to the shower. You continue with your hair, almost burning a strand while watching him peel his clothes off in the mirror. His back is to you so he doesn’t see your eyes go wide staring at his naked body, and the sound of the water running muffles your moan.  Once he starts to shower you wander off to the closet to pick your outfit, and also to wait until the steam clears from the mirror so you can continue getting ready.
“Ready” you grumble walking into the living room a little bit later. You find Mitch sitting on the couch ankles crossed with his feet resting on the coffee table. He stands up and you take in his appearance black denim clinging to his legs and light blue long sleeve collared shirt covering his torso. You grumble under your breath about how it only took a half hour for him to look that good, while you have been in the bathroom for an agonizing amount of time; though given your lack of energy everything took longer than it should have.
“Wow babe, you look great” he smiles kissing you lightly, causing some lip gloss to spread to his mouth. You bring a thumb up to wipe it away but Mitch leans in pressing his lips back to yours, smearing more across his lips.
He starts peppering quick wet kisses on your mouth and cheek causing you to laugh. “Now we can go” he remarks seeing you smile.
Getting out the door, you walk hand in hand through the halls, down the elevator. Once in the parking garage, his hand finds the small of your back, guiding you to the parking space. The ride to Justin and Audrey’s isn’t too far and is relatively quiet. You stare out the window while Mitch’s hand rests on your thigh.
It’s kind of unusual for you both to be this quiet for this long. Normally when you get in your head Mitch is the first person to pull you out, telling you a random fact or funny story; anything to get you to smile. But tonight it’s different, you can feel him glance in your direction periodically, but he leaves you to your thoughts for most of it.
“Hey Fred” you say walking to the elevator.
“Hey (Y/N)” he replies giving you a soft hug before greeting Mitch. You lean against the wall of the elevator while the two men chat beside you. Fred and Mitch chat the entire way up, his laughter echoing through the small space; but his laugh puts you at ease. Regardless of how you are feeling his laugh is fastest thing that can change your mood.
Once inside and around people you can feel your mood slowly shift. While still feeling tired, seeing your friends and laughing with them helps pull you from your funk.
“Hey you” Mitch says walking in to kitchen to find you. He wraps his arms around you and begins peppering soft playful kisses on your neck. “Woah you smell like beer” you laugh pulling your head back to look at him.
“You smell like beer” he retorts jokingly.
“No I smell like water and iced tea, that way we can get home later” you laugh.
“You’re always one step ahead” he smiles placing a soft kiss on your lips “that’s why I love you.”
You bring your hands to his cheek pulling his lips to yours. Your tongue slips into his mouth and you can taste the beer on his lips. He pushes you a couple steps back until you are pressed against the fridge as his tongue continues to dance with yours. His hands reach around you giving your ass a light squeeze, you giggle into the kiss and roll your hips towards him.
“Hey lovebirds there are other people here” Auston jokes causing you to separate. You feel heat hit your cheeks as you bury your head into Mitch’s chest.
“Yeah and some of them want the beer in the fridge” Willy adds.
With a couple chirps from the boys, the two of you make your way back to the party. You find some of the girls and fall into casual conversation, while Mitch and Freddie get into a heated discussion over some Netflix show. Your eyes find Mitch from across the room a few times, each time he sends you a glance.
Not the kind of glance that makes you want to lock him in a spare bedroom. Every time he smiles, sometimes his eyes linger; but there is no smirk or devilish grin instead you get the feeling he is talking about you.
You feel a hand lightly tap your wrist and you jump slightly; you turn and see Mitch. You had no idea he had left his post on the other side of the room let alone he was behind you.
“Sorry” he chuckles “come dance with me.”
“It’s not exactly a dancing song” you reply hearing Katy Perry being played.
“Trust me” he says lowly in your ear. You set your cup down and follow his lead to the middle of the room.
His hand finds the small of your back and he pulls you in close. You can smell the beer on his breath, the cologne of his body as he grips your one hand. “Mitch we can’t dance like this to Katy Perry” you laugh not even mentioning that nobody else is dancing.
At that moment, half way through the song you hear the tune switch to a piano ballad and Mitch starts to spin you around the living room.
Thought I was good, I was good on my own, I was alright Thought I was grown and the strangers I known, they were alright Thought that I knew everything, never wrong, I was alright Oh, I was good, I was good on my own, I was alright
You can feel all eyes on you but yours are locked on Mitch, his baby blues. He smiles placing a soft kiss into your hairline.
“I love you so much (Y/N)” he says softly in your ear. “You are the greatest thing to ever happen to me.”
You tilt your head to look at him with a large smile “I’d be nowhere if it wasn’t for you.”
“That’s a lie Mitchy” you reply and he shakes his head. He spins you out and pulls you back into his hard chest “you are everything to me.”
Oh, I lived a whole life Thinking I knew how my Heart could handle love A love I thought I knew Everything before us Was stretching out my heart, just So it could be big enough to beat for two
His hand slides lower, resting just above your belt. You can hear the hushes conversations going around you but you can’t focus on anything while Mitch continues to whisper in your ear.
“If I never amount to anything, never win a cup, or get injured and never play again it won’t matter because I would have you. I can’t imagine not talking to you every day, not seeing your pretty face in the morning.”
“Mitch” you say lightly feeling tears hit your eyes but he doesn’t stop, his mouth inches from your ear.
“I see you with Jace and Theo, and I can’t wait until it’s our baby your holding.”
He opens his hand spreading across your back and dips you backwards. His lips find yours and your hand on his bicep slides up to his neck gently gripping it for additional support, though you know Mitch won’t let you fall.
Never understood why People always say, love chooses you Now I do Now I do Didn't ever think that I could ever say I promise you
“(Y/N) he says bringing you back up to your feet. “I love you so much and I never thought I could be this happy. I want you to be my forever dance partner (Y/N).” His hands pull away from you and he fumbles in his pocket before dropping to his knee.
“Oh my god” you whisper bringing your hands up to your face in shock. The tears once sitting on your pupils are slowly rolling down your cheeks as he opens the small jewelry box.
Your eyes are glued to his, if they weren’t you would have seen him drop the box earning some chuckles from other guests.
And now I do Now I do Now I do
“(Y/N)” he grips your hand “will you marry me?”
“Yes! Of course” you yell almost before he even gets the question out. His hand is shaking as he slides the band on your finger. As soon as he is standing your arms wrap around his neck, your hands tangle in his hair and your mouth finds his.
This is the road, we can see where it goes together You are my home and I know I can stay forever
His hands are on your back holding you against his chest while your tongues dance in each other’s mouths. Your moans are swallowed by him, and for a second you forget everyone else is there. You don’t hear them clapping or cheering, you don’t hear their excitement your attention fixated solely on Mitch.
He is the first to pull away, his lips swollen and covered in your gloss. You’re about to lean in for more when you finally hear some voices around you and remember you are not alone. Instead you place one soft but tender kiss on his lips and place your head on his chest.
The next half hour is met with everyone congratulating you, hugs and the girls telling you they have the entire thing on video. You hear Mitch get chirped for dropping the ring. He says he thought he had pushed his nerves aside (being an athlete he learned to push away emotions during intense situations) until he actually got down on one knee. Once he actually got down on his knee, all the nerves and anxiety about you saying no came crashing over him, even though he knew the answer would be yes.
It’s something that the two of you had discussed. There was no way you would ever say no and he knew that; but in that moment it felt like a possibility to him. Finally you feel some of the excitement dissipate as everyone begins to separate into little groups around the room.
Mitch leaves for the bathroom and you wait a couple minutes before heading down the hall. He opens the door but before he steps out you shove him back inside.
“What are you doing?” he laughs as you lock the door behind yourself.
Your hands find his belt and begin to undo it, a dark grin spreading across your face.
“(Y/N/N)” he chokes out as you pop the button and slide his pants and boxers down his thighs a few inches. Your mouth finds his and you palm over him a couple times, feeling him begin to harden under your touch. Your mouth finds his neck and you start to suck on it before he pushes you off.
“Not there” he hisses knowing that your mouth is higher than the collar of a dress shirt, and he doesn’t want any hickeys to be visible in photos. You smile and fall to your knees; you feel the cool tile through the denim on your knees.
You tug on him a couple times, rubbing your thumb over the precum that has spilt out. You glance up at him through your lashes before finally moving your mouth, wrapping it around his hard cock as he hisses in response.
You hear him mumbling as you bob on him a few times, coating him in your saliva. Your tongue slides up the vein on his shaft and you see his eyes roll back at the feeling. Your cheeks hollow as one hand grips him taking what your mouth can’t fit.
Your hand and mouth work in tandem, as his hands tangle into your hair. He pulls your curls away from your face, gripping them in a loose pony at the back of your head. Your other hand reaches around and grips his ass, you use it to guide his hips forward slightly knowing Mitch won’t push more than your limits.
You continue to work on him, swirling your tongue around him when you feel his hands tighten in your hair. His hips involuntarily buck forward causing you to gag slightly and you know he is getting close. His soft moans are becoming sporadic, and your eyes lock on his.
The sight of you on your knees, beady eyes peering back to him has him quickly approaching his thigh. His moans are loud, but the music and laughter from the party are louder. “(Y/N) I’m gonna cum” he whispers.
You gently cup his balls and give them a light squeeze. You hear him groan above you as his hips twitch. Curse words are spilling from his lips as his hands tighten around your hair.
“(Y/N/N) I’m gonna cum” he warns.
A few seconds later and you hear him grunt as his dick twitches. Warm ribbons spill down your throat as you continue to suck him dry. Pulling your mouth off a little dribbles down your chin, Mitch holds a hand out which you graciously accept rising to your feet. You bring the back of your hand up and wipe away the cum dripping down your chin.
“Babe” he mumbles pulling you into his chest, his mouth pressing into your hair. “You rarely finish in your mouth, and you never swallow.”
“I do on special occasions” you tilt your head up to him. He brings his lips closer ghosting over yours “a proposal seems like a special occasion.”
“I don’t deserve you” he smiles pulling you in by the small of your back to kiss your lips.
“Why because I swallow sometimes?” you joke kissing him again.
He just shakes his head in response sliding his hand down inside your jeans. His large hand cups your cheek giving your ass a light squeeze while his lips press back to yours. His calloused index finger slips under your underwear and you giggle pulling away.
“We should go home” you smirk. He adjusts his pants while you fix some of your smudged makeup. He unlocks the door and tugs at your wrist pulling you down the hall. Once in the living room you hear some chirping from the players, while their partners murmur for them to be quiet.
Your cheeks immediately go red as your curls fall in front of your face, shielding you from their glares. You hear Mitch give a couple chirps back and your eyes find Audrey who smirks at you from the corner. Once your boots are on you quickly grip Mitch’s hand and pull him out the door and away from the laughter of his teammates.
Once in the elevator you are like two teenagers, immediately finding the others mouths. Moans and giggles fill the elevator, your hands wandering up his back as he pins you against the wall. If the ride was any longer you are sure he would have tried to pull your clothes off, but you hear the ding and it pulls you two apart.
As the sober one you are the one to drive home. The car ride home feels painfully long, you hit every red light. Mitch has a hand placed high on your thigh periodically giving you a firm squeeze.
“Babe” you whine at a red light “I’m driving.”
He turns in his seat to face you “I can’t keep my hands off you, fiancé” he smirks.
“Fiancé, I like that” you reply his words warming your heart. He leans forward in his seat and places a soft kiss on your cheek before sucking on your ear lobe. You groan slightly and push him off of you as you accelerate through the intersection. He falls back into his seat but keeps his hand firmly attached to your leg.
Once in the garage you quickly pull into your spot, leaving the car diagonal not caring to fix it. You hear Mitch joking when he gets out checking your parking garage, but you are well on the way to the elevator. The ride up is long; another couple stepped on with you. You’re wrapped tightly around Mitch and as soon as the door opens on your floor you pull him out dragging him down the hall.
His hands are wrapped on your hips as he pushes you forward; his lips trailing on your neck. Your mind is clouded with lust as you approach your door fumbling to get the door unlocked. Mitch chuckles against your neck grabbing the keys to open the door for you.
Once inside you both kick your shoes off against the wall and your mouths quickly reattach. Your kiss is hungry and passionate, as he guides you down the hall to your bedroom. Your hands are firmly gripped in his hair, only pulling apart to remove clothing.
Once in your bedroom you are both left in just jeans, a trail of discarded clothing left in your wake. You quickly undo is belt and pants, pressing them down his large thighs.
“Fuck baby” he groans as you palm over his boxers “it’s your turn.”
He pushes you back onto the bed, air leaving your lungs as you hit the mattress. He crawls over you with blown pupils while his mouth attaches to your neck. He sucks and nips your skin while his hand gently grazes over your stomach. His touch is soft and slow, feather like sending a shiver down your spine.
Finally his calloused fingers find your denim releasing the button. He pulls your pants and underwear down your legs bringing two fingers up to your dripping folds. His mouth finds a breast gently sucking on your swollen orb while your entire body arches up to meet him.
His two fingers press your folds open, and gently flick your clit a few times. His fingers dance around your entrance, playfully pulling your lips apart. Every time you think he is going to slide his fingers in they pull away, causing you to groan from under him.
His lips curl against the skin of your breast as he sucks on your nipple before finally sliding in. Your hips rise and head falls into the pillow feeling his long fingers press into your folds. He begins to pump his fingers in and out of you as his mouth switches to find your other breast.
Your hands quickly find his hair tangling in as his fingers curl inside you. He hits your sweet spot with every thrust, having long been familiar with your body. His teeth graze over your nipple and your entire body squirms under his touch as you feel your high quickly approach.
Your moans are deeper, heavier as your hands grasp at his dark roots. You feel him smirk as his mouth finds the valley of your breasts. His thick fingers pump in and out at a rapid pace and your heels dig into the bed as your vision goes white.
Mitch groans feeling you clench around his fingers. Warm white liquid spills out around him and he keeps pumping working you through it. You release your grasp on his hair and he pops his head up with a devilish grin “that was fast” he growls in your ear.
His voice is low and husky, echoing through the room. Before you can respond you feel his swollen tip poking at your entrance. He strokes it over your folds a few times coating it in your slick.
You grasp his cheeks pulling his lips down to yours as he pushes into your heat. He groans as you welcome him in, a leg wrapping around his hip. He brings a hand down to grip the underside of your thigh, holding it in place.
“Fuck you feel so good (Y/N)” he moans beginning to rock in and out of you, swallowing your moans with his kiss. He starts off slow allowing you time to adjust to his size. While he is relatively normal in length, he is thick.
Super thick.
The first time you say him you didn’t think you would be able to take him in. Your jaw fell to the floor but Mitch assured you he would take it slow. And he did, but a part of you thinks that was also for him. He said you were extremely tight, and if he had of gone much faster you think he would have finished in under a minute.
Now it’s years later, every time you see it you feel your breath catch in your throat but you are used to it and him to you. He knows to give you a few slow thrusts before picking up his pace. He says he can see it written on your face once you are ready.
“Mitch” you pant breathlessly pulling your mouth away. Your hands find his back digging your nails into his big muscles.
Dark eyes stare down at you, a string of curse words leaving his mouth. He squeezes your thigh as you roll your hips into him his pace picking up. You bring your lower lip between your teeth as your eyes roll into the back of your head.
You feel Mitch’s head duck down biting on your neck. Your moans get louder as your high gets closer.
“Babe I’m close” you groan and he smirks against your neck. His hand slips from your thigh to your clit and he begins pressing into it. Each thrust is harder and faster than the last. You claw desperately at his back while deep circles are pressed into your sensitive bud.
His mouth finds the sweet spot below your ear, sucking and biting at it until you’re falling apart under him. Your back arches and you clench around him, pulling him in to your warm heat.
“Fuck (Y/N/N)” he groans above you as you clench around him. Your nails leave deep crescents in his shoulder while your heel digs into his back. He fucks you through your high, as your vision goes dark. You hear him mumbling into your neck but can’t focus until your entire body relaxes.
He continues to piston in and out of you his hips snapping as he chases his own high. You feel him peppering kisses on your jaw as you whimper, your cunt becoming very sensitive in need of a break. You feel tears prick the edge of your eyes as your whines become louder.
“Mitchy” you moan.
“I know babe” he groans. He picks up his pace. He pushes off your body changing the angle hitting you slightly deeper as he starts to become sloppy above you.
“Mitch” you whine tears rolling down your cheeks. He groans and you feel his dick twitch as he spills inside you, warm cum flooding your walls. A few final thrusts and his body collapses on you.
You lie there silently, the only sound is your sporadic breathing. Slowly Mitch pulls out and you whimper at the emptiness causing Mitch to grin.
“You okay?” he asks wiping away the stray tear that has fallen. “You were superfast tonight.”
“Never had a problem with me being fast before” you joke and he laughs flipping his wet hair back from his face.
“I don’t have a problem with it” he smirks “it’s just unusual for you.”
“The excitement of tonight got to me” you smile pulling him in for a soft kiss.
He moans slightly and pulls away falling beside you onto his back. “So what about the end of July?” he asks.
“For what” you ask turning to look at him.
“Our wedding” he laughs.
“Oh” you say lightly.
“Second guessing?” he smirks at you.
“No I was just thinking we could do it next summer” you reply.
“You know July is over eight months away, I think we can plan it before then” he smiles. “I don’t want to wait a year and a half to make you my wife.” He rolls onto his side, pressing a kiss to your shoulder.
You smile at his words “I know but” you trail off turning your head to look into his blue eyes that soft and genuine, etched with concern.
“But what babe?” he asks bringing a hand to your chin, gently rubbing it along your jaw.
“In eight months I won’t fit in my dress” you say.
Confusion washes over his face, his eyes shifting over you. You allow him time to process what you said when his eyes go wide and a large smile crosses his face.
“Baby are we having a baby?” he asks bringing his hand from your jaw to your stomach.
Tears prick your eyes and you nod quickly. His lips are instantly on yours, while he strokes over your stomach.
“When did you find out?” he asks crawling down to rest his head on your stomach.
Your hands find his hair, gently playing with his strands “when you were at practice, I was going to tell you tomorrow on your day off.”
You aren’t even sure if he heard you because he immediately starts kissing and whispering to your stomach. His hand is gently stroking over your stomach when his head snaps up to look at you.
“I’m such a dick for making you go to the party” he smiles.
“You didn’t know” you laugh running your hand through his hair. “Besides I had a very good time.”
He curls up beside you keeping his large hand glued to your stomach. His legs wrap over yours essentially becoming your blanket.
“So have you seen a doctor? They have you on any vitamins, or is there any special foods I should be buying to help this peanut grow?”
You laugh turning your head to look at him “I found out about 7 hours ago, I have not talked with a doctor yet.
“I’m just so excited” he smiles.
“I’m gonna be a daddy” he whispers eyes glazed over.
“Yeah” you smile up lazily tracing his tattooed arm “you’re going to be a daddy.”

December 1994
Luke groaned as he woke up, squinting hard to try and adjust his eyes to the amount of light in the room.
Even before he could see clearly, he knew he must've fallen asleep in the studio judging by the soreness in his back and neck that he always got when he slept on the old couch. It couldn't have been more than six in the morning, and Luke could still feel the tiredness in his bones. So he tried to turn away from the light and hopefully fall back asleep, but there was something keeping him firmly in place.
His heart skipped when he looked down and saw that you were laying right next to him with your head on his chest and an arm thrown across his stomach. When he realized that his own arms were wrapped around you, his heart broke out into a full-on tap dance.
Waves of confusion ran through his still-foggy brain until he saw his guitar case propped up against the piano and his backpack on the floor with his clothes spilling out of it.
Then the events of last night quickly came back to him.
How he had gotten home late from rehearsal and his mom was waiting in the kitchen with his latest report card and her signature lecture at the ready. One minute he was standing there yelling, packing all he could fit into his bag, and the next, he was halfway to the studio with the rain soaking him head to toe.
He had expected it to be empty when he finally got there, but he was flooded with relief when he saw you. All the frustration slowly melted out of him the longer he laid there with you, leaving him feeling exhausted and shivering despite how warm he felt.
The last thing he wanted to do was talk about any of it, but when you asked, the words came out of his mouth before he could stop them.
He remembered rambling and crying again, the sound of your voice and the feeling of your fingers in his hair warming him up even more. Then finally, he remembered falling asleep with his chin tucked on top of your head, the smell of your shampoo filling his senses.
Without thinking, Luke reached down and carefully pushed a piece of hair away from your face, tucking it behind your ear and smiling to himself when you shifted into his touch. Then taking in a sharp breath as the realization ran through him all the way down to his toes.
You were his best friend.
The person he wanted to see at the end of a long day. Whenever he was full of anger or lost in confusion, all he had to do was look at you and everything suddenly made sense again. With your pretty smile and laugh, and your way of flipping that little switch inside him that made his head all fuzzy and the ground start spinning under his feet.
You were his best friend, and he was in love with you.

2020
All you felt was a mixture of anxiety and nausea as you stood on the Orpheum's street corner, biting the tips of your fingernails.
The entire plan hinged on Willie and Teddy getting everything done in time, and considering that they had betrayed you all before, you couldn’t help but expect the worst.
“Look, don’t worry. Willie said he’ll get us on that marquee.” Alex said nervously as he kicked pebbles across the sidewalk.
“This is going to work, right?” Reggie asked.
“It has to.” Luke mumbled, wincing seconds later when another shock hit them.
Two sharp pops cut through the air behind you and you all whipped around to see Willie and Teddy standing just a few feet away. Willie was watching you all carefully with concern written all over his face, his eyes lingering on Alex longer than anyone else. Teddy stood at the edge of the group, practically burning a hole in your face with his guilty stare.
“Are you guys okay?” Willie asked.
“Yeah, nothing we haven’t felt before.” Alex laughed awkwardly. “How’d it go?”
“Well, when the opening band wakes up, they’ll find their bus two hundred miles out of Vegas.” Willie said with a proud smile as he did a spin, showing off his stolen jacket with the band’s name across the back.
“With absolutely no chance of getting back in time.” Teddy added.
Luke gave Willie a fistbump and pointed up to the office above the Orpheum. “That means there’s probably a promoter up there freaking out right now.”
Willie grinned, sarcasm laced in his tone. “Nah, man. This is Hollywood. I’m sure he’s being very professional.”
You laughed and then Alex slowly inched forward, clearly struggling for the right words to say to Willie. You gave his arm a quick squeeze before following Reggie and Luke down the street to give them space. Before you even got halfway down the sidewalk, Teddy poofed next to you.
“You know, If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you don’t want to talk to me.” He joked.
“Teddy-”
"I just-I didn't want to leave things the way we did." He rambled. "I'm sorry, I should've told you everything that night in the diner-"
"Teddy, It's okay." You said. "You told me before Caleb could put the stamp on me, and you didn't know the details about the plan until after it was too late to help my friends. Plus, I know how much you're risking helping us now."
As soon as the words left your mouth, you felt some of the weight fall off your shoulders. You weren't sure why since the situation was still a little painful and awkward. But being around Teddy always made you feel a little like that kid who started working at the diner with Cece all those years ago. Besides, they were so alike that you found it hard to stay mad at him.
You held out your hand for Teddy to shake. "Despite everything, I'm glad we met."
“Likewise, Gorgeous,” Teddy said with a relieved smile as he grasped your hand. With a subtle wink, he nodded over towards where Luke was standing at the end of the street. “He’s a lucky guy.”
"What? How did you?-" You sputtered as he stepped away. You never told Teddy about Luke, or at least you didn't think you did.
Teddy just smirked in response before disappearing into the air. At the same time, you saw Willie skate away out of the corner of your eye, leaving Alex alone on the sidewalk.
You all phased next to him and Luke squeezed his shoulder reassuringly. "You okay, man?"
"Yeah. I'm good." Alex smiled slyly as he gestured to the office. "Looks like this show needs a new opening act though."
You grinned. "Let's go see if we can help with that."
-
When you got back to the studio, you found Julie pacing back and forth in the middle of the room as she wrung her hands together.
When you all poofed in, she immediately jumped into a load of questions, losing her breath halfway through and flailing her arms around.
"Whoa, just sit down," You laughed excitedly. "We'll tell you everything."
Julie took a gasping breath and plopped backwards onto the couch then stared at you all with expectant eyes. "Well?"
"It worked!" You announced. "Everything's fine."
"You should be getting the call...now!" Alex pointed to Julie’s phone on the table just as it started buzzing. You all cheered and Julie shushed you as she answered the call.
You heard a woman's voice say something through the phone and Julie gave a thumbs-up as she started jumping on the couch. You watched in amusement and mild horror as Luke and Reggie lifted Alex up into the air and spun him around.
Once he was back on the ground, Luke and Reggie made a beeline for you, each of them grabbed one of your arms and flipped you upside down over their shoulders.
You all spent the next twenty minutes laughing and screaming and Alex even got a little teary-eyed but you pretended not to notice. Then Julie called Flynn and ran off excitedly to decide her outfit for the night, leaving the four of you alone to plan out the setlist.
“Okay, so I’m thinking we start with Stand Tall.” Luke said excitedly as he wrote the words down in his songbook.
“Sounds good.” Reggie said, suddenly quiet.
“’Sounds good’? Guys, I wanna hear ‘That sounds awesome!” Luke reached out and nudged Reggie’s shoulder. “I know this isn’t the way we imagined any of this. But we need to be all in tonight. This is our second chance to play the Orpheum!”
“I get it.” Reggie sputtered. “But it’s hard. Do we even know what’s on the other side when we cross over? Do we still get to hang out together?”
You shifted your weight as the happy little bubble surrounding you popped. You had been so wrapped up in the excitement of finally playing the Orpheum that you almost forgot what tonight was really about.
“You guys are the only family I have.” Reggie’s eyes were glued to the piano as he played with his fingers. You reached out and locked his arm with yours in an attempt to comfort him.
“I don’t know what’s gonna happen either. But it’s not like we have a choice.” Alex said.
Suddenly, Reggie’s arm fell out of yours as all three boys fell back, clutching their sides.
“I’m pretty sure we do.” Reggie groaned. “And it rhymes with ‘Hollywood Ghost Club’.”
The garage doors creaked open and Julie appeared with a bright smile and a blue garment bag in her hand. When she saw your expressions, her smile fell. “What’s wrong?”
“We just got hit pretty hard by one of those jolts.” Alex said. “But we’re fine.”
“Oh, good.” She nodded, though she still looked on edge. “I’m nervous.”
“That makes two of us.” You said. “But we made it this far for a reason. We got this.”
“Can you ride there with me? I'm gonna need more pep-talk material for the drive there cause I still think I might puke.” Julie tucked her hair behind her ears.
“Of course, and don't worry, we’ll leave the windows open.” You joked, making everyone laugh.
The sound of a car horn cut through the air and Julie looked outside. "That's my dad. Are you ready, (Y/n)?"
You nodded. "Yeah, uh, give me a second. I'll meet you in the car."
As Julie disappeared behind the doors, you turned to the boys and sighed as you tried to soak up this moment. For all you knew, this could be the last little window of time you had alone with them before tonight.
Julie was a huge part of the band of course, but these were your boys. The ones who you started this all with, who had been by your side for everything.
From the look on all their faces, you could see that they were thinking the same thing.
Without saying a word, you launched yourself at Alex. He made a surprised noise but recovered quickly, throwing his arms around you and holding you tight.
"And I'm the emotional one?" He jokingly muttered in your ear and you pinched his side, making him jump back. "Rude."
As soon as your arms were open, Reggie stepped forward and hugged you so tightly that you were thankful to not need oxygen anymore because he was definitely crushing several vital organs.
You laughed and gave him one last squeeze before pulling away, locking eyes with Luke instantly.
Alex cleared his throat awkwardly and grabbed Reggie's shoulder, steering him over to Luke's songbook to 'check out the setlist again'.
"And then there were two." Luke joked.
You laughed and stepped into his waiting arms, making him laugh. You soaked up the feeling of comfort and familiarity for a minute before pulling away.
"This, uh, is for you," Luke said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. You knitted your eyebrows together in confusion as he handed it over. "I wanted you to have it in case...well, you know. If tonight doesn't work."
"It will." You said, trying to ignore the fact that it very well could happen. "You're not getting rid of me that easily, Patterson."
"I wouldn't dream of it." He quipped back, his voice sounding softer and less teasing than you would've expected. You pulled back from him and because you didn't know if you would ever get another chance, you stood on your tiptoes and planted a kiss on his cheek.
You moved away too fast to see his reaction but the gesture made the other two boys smirk at you as you dashed out of the doors, making a beeline for the car pulling out of the driveway.

The back rooms of the Orpheum were a maze.
You had left for a few minutes to walk around the venue and clear your head, trying to wring out the last of your nerves.
By the time you found your way back, you expected to find the rest of the band rushing to get ready in the dressing room. But all you saw was Julie anxiously pacing as she had been earlier, a habit she seemed to have inherited from both you and Alex.
“You okay?”
She snapped her head up towards you and sighed. “Yeah, just a little worried. The guys aren’t here yet.”
You looked around the room and then at the clock, frowning. The show was in less than half an hour and that was already cutting it close. Part of you wanted to go check on them but Julie seemed to need you more at the moment.
“Okay, well, give them another ten minutes. I'm sure they'll be here. They wouldn’t miss this…again.”
You ran your palm across the front of your pocket, feeling Luke's note next to your parent’s photo, and hoped you were right.
But then more and more time passed until the stage manager came to escort Julie to the stage.
"Just a second!" She calls out and then turns to you. "(Y/n), something's wrong. They were getting those jolts pretty hard before we left. They must've run out of time."
You shut your eyes tight as the words sunk in. All you could bring yourself now was, ‘This isn't what was supposed to happen.’
The world fell out from under your feet and you had trouble even standing up straight as you imagined what must've happened to them. Your best friends, your brothers, your family was gone and there wasn't anything you could do about it.
The guy knocked again, this time a little harder and with a nervous tone. Julie chewed her lip as she looked between you and the door and you could almost see the cloud of grief settling over her.
As hard as it was, you tried your best to shove your feelings down and marched up to Julie. There would be time to fall apart later, but you knew that this what they would want you to do. "Let's go do this for them, okay?"
She took a deep, shaky breath before hesitantly nodding. You followed closely behind her as she walked out the door though the halls until she reached the stage. You waited beside Flynn in the wing as Julie settled behind her microphone and addressed the crowd.
There were scattered claps from around the venue and then she took a deep breath before singing the opening.
After the first few lines, you took your cue and materialized at the center of the stage. The crowd gasped and cheered the way they always did, but you kept your eyes shut tight and focused on the music.
Just as the song started picking up, you heard a familiar pop in the air and then the sound of drumming. You whirled around to see Alex mounted onto a drum set at the back of the stage, twirling his drumsticks around and smiling like he had never been gone at all.
Once you got over the initial shock, you wanted to cry with relief. They were okay, they were here. Alex winked at you goofily, and you ran towards Julie’s keyboard.
She had started bouncing on the balls of her feet, both of you finally getting into the song now that they were coming back. You followed suit, dancing around the base of the drum set as yours and Julie’s voices came together.
Then Reggie appeared on the other side of Julie and you ran to his side. You bumped his shoulder with yours and he grinned, moving to stand back to back.
The song was ramping up to the chorus when a staticky noise cut through the air, not loud enough for the crowd to hear but enough to make you all look over to the other end of the stage.
You could see Luke's form fading in and out, a look of anguish on his face, and the pit in your stomach opened up again. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as Alex's drumming paused and Luke finally materialized to sing the opening of the chorus.
You didn't even know you were moving until you suddenly found yourself across the stage next to Luke, unable to stop smiling as you sang.
Julie joined you, throwing her arms up in the air happily and jumping around. Reggie appeared by her side, flashing the crowd a winning smile.
Alex stood up and gripped his mic as he sang this solo. You looked back at him and flashed him a proud smile, then whooping loudly when Reggie sang his lines.
You all went down the line hitting your notes until the chorus kicked in again and your heart felt so full you almost couldn't stand it. This was what you were so close to achieving before you died, it was all you had wanted for years, and you knew that if you hadn't died, that night would've changed your life. But this night was something even more special. Because you were all here, all together.
Even if it was just for one last song.
Julie caught your attention and nodded towards the platform that spread out into the crowd. You followed her to the center and stood back to back as everyone cheered.
The guys joined in on either side of you, Alex grabbing one of your hands and Luke holding the other. You all bowed to the audience before taking your cue and vanishing, leaving only Julie on stage.
You landed in the wing, feeling a little lightheaded and overwhelmed from all the emotions you had experienced in the last five minutes. The elated smile fading from your face when all three boys poofed by your side only to fall to the floor instantly.
“It didn’t work.” You said miserably as Julie emerged into the backstage area. She grabbed Flynn and whispered something to her, pointing in the direction of her family. Flynn nodded and disappeared into the crowd while Julie ran to your side.
You hauled Alex onto his feet, letting him lean on you to stay upright while Luke and Reggie trailed behind Julie as she led the group back to the dressing room. Once everyone was inside, they collapsed on the couch or the floor, loudly groaning in pain.
“What happened? Why didn’t it work?” Julie asked tearfully.
“I guess playing here wasn’t our unfinished business.” Alex said hollowly.
“Point Caleb.” Reggie muttered as he clung to the side of an armchair.
You stood frozen next to Julie as panic spread through your whole body, both of you flinching in sympathy as the shocks continued.
“You have to save yourselves right now.” Julie begged. “Join Caleb’s club. It’s better than not existing at all!”
“She’s right.” You managed to say, your voice shaky and almost giving out. Your stomach flipped at the thought of them having to work for an evil club owner forever, but the alternative was worse. “You guys need to go now! For me. For us.”
“We’re not going back there.” Reggie shook his head.
Luke pulled himself up and stumbled forward a little so that he was right in front of you. “No music is worth making if we’re not all making it together.”
You sighed sadly, thinking back to your conversation yesterday. “So no more regrets?”
Luke let out a deep sigh and then reached up and cupped your cheek with his right hand. “Just one.”
You furrowed your eyebrows in response and Luke blinked hard as if he was trying to find the words. "I never told you why I left that night."
"Luke, don't." You gave him a weak smile. "I get it."
"You do?" He asked.
You struggled to get the words out. "Yeah, I mean it was bound to happen eventually. We just got too close and it was weird for you. I understand t-”
"What?" Luke asked, cutting you off with a confused look. "No, no, that's not it at all. Read the-"
Before he could finish, you heard Julie gasp loudly from a few feet away. You looked over to see her stepping back from Alex with an awestruck look on her face as she gripped his forearms.
Wait, what?
Before you could even begin to process what you were seeing, Reggie was reaching out to Julie, who grabbed his wrist and hauled him up to his feet. The three of them stared at each other for a few seconds before Julie turned to you and Luke.
“Guys, come here.”
Alex reached out and pulled you into his side while Luke threw an arm around Reggie’s back and Julie brought you all in closer to her. At first, nothing happened. But then there was a faint buzzing sound and the boys lifted their wrist towards the ceiling and you all watched in awe as the stamp floated away in the blink of an eye.
“Whoa.” Reggie said, his eyes still glued to the ceiling. “I don’t feel as weak anymore.”
“Yeah, me neither.” Alex agreed. “Not that I ever was that weak in the first place.”
You rolled your eyes and let your head fall over on his shoulder. “What do you think that means?”
Luke smiled. “I think it means the band is back.”
It was quiet for a second before Alex looked at you all shyly. “You guys think we can try that hug thing again?”
You laughed as you huddled together again, sniffling and laughing. Then Julie yelled out that you had played the Orpheum and then you were all jumping around, still tangled in each other’s arms.
Eventually, you all broke apart and while the boys started chasing each other around, you turned to Julie. She looked into your eyes and immediately flew into your arms, muttering into your shoulder, “I always wanted a big sister.”
The words warmed your heart and you squeezed her extra hard, grateful that you actually could now. “Well, I’m honored.”
“My family's probably looking for me so..." Julie stepped back from your arms with the biggest smile you’d ever seen on her face, you jokingly bowed to her and she copied the gesture before disappearing behind the door.
You wiped the last of your tears out of your eyes and turned around to find Alex and Reggie were talking in whispers and wearing knowing smiles. When Alex saw you looking, he cleared his throat and nudged Reggie’s shoulder.
“Hey, Reg.” Alex said cheekily, not taking his eyes off of you for even a second. “I was going to check out the next band. You wanna come with me?”
“Sure!” Reggie started strolling towards the door, stopping only for a second to nudge your shoulder and whisper ‘don't do anything I wouldn’t do’ in your ear.
Alex fixed Luke with a pointed look over his shoulder and Reggie gave him a dorky wink before they poofed away. You smiled fondly at the space where they were just standing and awkwardly turned towards Luke.
“Hi.” You said, laughing awkwardly.
“Hi.” Luke muttered back as he stepped forward until he was close enough to grab your hand. “About what I was saying earlier…”
You opened your mouth to say something but he shook his head and pointed to your pocket. “Read it. Please.”
You tugged the note he had given you earlier out of your pocket and carefully folded it open to see that it wasn’t a note at all. It was the love song that Julie had found that day in the garage, the one that he didn’t want anyone to see. You struggled a little trying to decipher Luke's handwriting. The ink was a little smudged and the song was clearly unfinished but it was the most beautiful thing you had ever read. And he had written it for you.
"I didn't leave because we got too close," He said. "It was the opposite, (Y/n), I left because I was scared to lose you, and I know that doesn't make sense because I kind of did w-"
You carefully tucked the paper back in your pocket with one hand and grabbed the back of his neck with the other, pulling him down and closing the last bit of space between you.
Luke's brain short-circuited for a second before he started kissing back, grabbing your waist with enough force to nearly knock you both backwards. It was dizzying and a little desperate, yet weirdly familiar, as if you'd been kissing him your whole life.
Most moments with Luke felt like they were happening in slow motion, but this time it was like a high-speed movie montage of your whole lives. The stolen crayons, the time capsule, the pre performance pep talks, the smell of cinnamon, the ferris wheel, his jacket, the movie nights and songwriting sessions. All of it had led up to this moment.
"I love you." Luke said immediately after you pulled away. "God, I love you so much. I'm such an idiot. I'm sorry."
“Hey, it’s okay.” You laughed, blinking another wave of tears out of your eyes. “I should’ve told you forever ago instead of skirting around it.”
“And what is it that you should’ve told me?” He said teasingly and you rolled your eyes. You had gotten so used to Luke being so shut down or nervous around you that you almost forgot how much of a little shit he could be.
“That I love you too.” You said, unable to stop smiling.
Luke leaned down and captured your lips in another kiss, this time threading his fingers through your hair as he cupped your cheeks in his hands. “I’m never gonna get tired of hearing that.”
You bit your lip to keep another laugh from bubbling up as you looked up at him, feeling completely overwhelmed in the best way possible. "So...what now?"
"I don't know." Luke admitted. "But I know one thing."
"What's that?"
"That no matter where we go, or what we do," He pushed a piece of hair behind your ear. "In life, in death... I'm yours. Always."

Y/N didn’t actively go seeking out Luke or his bandmates after the night at the club for two rather prominent reasons:
1)      Caleb had explicitly told her not to, and after 25 years in his employ, Y/N knew better than to face the wrath of the most powerful spirit she knew,
2)      She was actually nervous to talk to him again.
So, while Willie skated around the city to try and catch a glance of Alex, Y/N stay firmly put in the club for the following days. She had the privilege of going out, she normally used it to follow Willie about LA as he skated or go see new bands at her favourite music spots around the city, but those few days she barely left her apartment in the hotel.
In fact, when she eventually met Luke, it was by complete accident.
Luke had spent that past few days with Alex and Reggie, trying to convince Julie to re-join the band. They tried singing her back in, tried bribing her after Reggie managed to finally grab a cupcake from the fridge, and nothing worked. It was only on Luke’s birthday, after seeing how he acted with his parents, that Julie finally agreed to continue the band, now labelled ‘Julie and The Phantoms’ thanks to Flynn, and they were able to confirm their first proper gig at a club downtown.
It was a showcase more than anything, a chance for managers and talent scouts to find fresh faces for records, the perfect opportunity for them. Sure, Julie had to sneak out after her dad and tía grounded her, but it was worth it. The boys met her at the venue, as did Flynn, and they found spaces in the crowd to wait for their turn.
“Am I late?” Julie asked Flynn as she rushed in, to which Flynn shook her head with a sigh.
“No, you’re early.” She muttered, gesturing to the stage as Carrie walked on stage with Dirty Candy, a sight no one expected to see that night.
“Carrie? How did she get in?” Julie asked Flynn, trying her hardest to contain the eye roll as the five girls on stage took their positions.
“Daddy probably made some calls.”  Flynn muttered, Dirty Candy’s track coming on in the background.
“Isn’t she the one dating the guy you-” Luke leaned forward to ask, wiggling his eyebrows, but he was shushed by Julie quickly, who folded her arms over her chest, making Luke and Reggie chuckle a little. When the third laugh of Alex didn’t appear, the pair glanced around, only to find their bandmate had disappeared.
“Where is he?” Reggie asked, only for Alex to appear on stage with Dirty Candy, dancing his heart out along with the girls. He flounced and twirled in time with the music, though his lanky frame made every movement a little clumsy and jagged. It was only a matter of moments before Julie, Reggie and Luke were all laughing beside a rather confused Flynn.
“It’s the guys..” Julie muttered, and Flynn just nodded, Alex reappearing right beside her. “You having fun out there?” She asked Alex, who took a few deep breaths.
“It’s not me… Uh…” He smiled a little, looking over to find Reggie with a dubious look on his face and Luke struggling not to chuckle. “It’s my feet.” He explained, a grin growing on his face. “Put me back in coach.” He muttered before poofing away back onto the stage, the action earning a laugh from behind the guys and Julie, making them all stop for a moment.
Luke and Reggie shared a look with Julie, all of them confused. They were the only ones who could hear their conversations, could see one another, so why had they heard another girl laughing? Reggie turned to investigate, his eyes widening as he spotted a familiar face two tables back, and he quickly nudged Luke. When Luke didn’t respond, Reggie yanked his arm and turned him around.
“Gotta say, I really thought you were the dancer of the group Denim… But I think Alex’s takes first place.” Y/N spoke over the noise, lifting her hand to wave her fingers. “Hi Reggie.” She said with a smile, the boy gulping and waving back, before waving a hand in front of Julie’s face to get her attention.
“Reggie wh-” Julie swivelled and stopped, looking at Luke and the girl Luke was staring at, who then looked back at her with an equal amount of shock.
“Why do you look terrified?” Flynn asked suddenly, noticing her best friend had done a 180 and was staring into space.
“I can… see her…” Julie said slowly, while at the same time Y/N asked Luke a question.
“Can she see me?” Her eyes never broke from the pretty Latina girl, probably a half year younger than herself, and Luke glanced between the two. The girl looked oddly familiar, like Y/N had seen her before, met her before, but she couldn’t place it.
“I uh… I guess so. Julie,” Luke snapped his fingers in front of Julie’s face, and the girl blinked quickly, nodding to show she was back from her daze. “Julie, this is Y/N. Y/N, Julie.”
“I wish I looked as amazing as you do in turquoise.” Y/N said quickly, trying to relieve some tension before turning back to Luke, and getting a baffled ‘thank you’ from Julie in return. “Why can she see me?”
“Oh, Julie can see all of us. She’s the one that brought the guys and I back… Not sure how she can see you, but I’m new to the whole ghost thing, I’m not gonna question it.” Luke shrugged, earning a smile from Y/N. “Why are you here? Stalking us like Willie has been?”
“Not at all, if you can believe. No, I’m… I’m a big music fan, this is one of my favourite spots. Like to listen to the new age rock coming out of LA… Not whatever this is.” She gestured to the stage, one of the lights shining on her: she was dressed quite the same as the last time Luke had seen her, this time a band tee and denim skirt with doc martens on, her hair in braids. “It’s almost like I perform for a… for an after-living.” She paused on the right word for it, getting a sweet laugh from the mop-haired boy. “Why are you interfering with my personal time?” She questioned right back as Alex reappeared with the song’s ending. He took one glance at Y/N and bent over to whisper into Julie’s ear, causing her to cover her mouth and squeal.
“We, uh, we’re performing next...” Luke said quickly, glaring at his friends and shooing them away. With the action, Julie and Flynn rushed away, the former whispering in Flynn’s ear as they went, while Alex and Reggie left to ready themselves for the performance. “Sorry about that.”
“Good things, I hope?” She giggled a little, and Luke went red. “You know, I knew you were in a band, I just didn’t think it would be with a lifer. How on earth does that work?” Y/N asked with sincerity, and Luke smiled.
“You’ll have to wait and see, darling.” He teased before disappearing, leaving Julie on the stage alone.
--
Luke thought he had got off lucky, that with so much focus being around getting Julie back on board with the band would let Alex and Reggie forget about what happened after their night at the club, but as soon as they all got back rehearsing, the subject of Luke’s mystery woman came up again: the first time had been late the night after the club, when Reggie mentioned it out of the blue and got him and Alex talking it over for an hour.
“Julie, I know you’ve been busy…” Reggie started the afternoon before their show with the tell-tale signs of oncoming gossip, causing Luke to look up from his song writing journal. “But the night of the club, sorry about that by the way, Luke got more than a stamp.” He dished, and Julie stared at him wide eyed.
“It was nothing, stop talking crap Reggie.” Luke tried to defend himself, but Alex had snuck behind him and pinned him to the couch, and Reggie was already rolling up his sleeve to reveal the faded markings of a telephone number.
“Who is she?” Julie gasped, moving to the edge of the couch and resting her chin on her hands.
“No-one… Her name was Y/N… But it doesn’t matter because I won’t call her.” Luke huffed, shaking off his bandmates and turning back to his journal.
“What? Why not?” Reggie asked, appalled. “You like her, she clearly likes you… Calling you Denim all night, dancing with you…” He trailed off, but it was enough for Julie to squeal.
“A nickname and dancing? Luke, why don’t you call her?!” She demanded answers, all three of them did, quickly forming a line up of folded arms in front of the couch Luke had gotten comfy on to write. He sat up, frustrated, and slammed his book closed.
“Because, right now, we’re focused on music! Last thing I want, or need is a…” He stopped, wondering what on earth he would even call dating a fellow ghost.
“A ghoulfriend?” Alex offered, the trio stopping for a moment before laughing hysterically, leaving Luke groaning and covering his face with a pillow.
--
Watching them perform was a level of exhilaration Y/N hadn’t felt since she was… Well, alive. It gave her ghost bumps on her arms, had her tapping her feet and dancing along, triggered every happy feeling she could muster.
After a slight hiccup with the band’s name, and Luke admitting that his handwriting sucked, Julie corrected the host as she sat down at the piano.
Julie’s voice was angelic, and watching her play the piano struck chords in Y/N’s heart she didn’t know were there anymore, and she found herself standing beside Flynn, Julie’s friend, as they watched together, though very separate. Her voice brought the whole room to life after the Candy Girls’, or whatever they were called, performance: people quickly went from focusing on their drinks and food to focusing solely on her.
And then, like magic, the boys’ and their entire set up, instruments and all, appeared on stage for the chorus. Even as a ghost, Y/N was as surprised as the other audience members, who had grabbed out phones to record and done double takes when the rest of the band appeared on stage from thin air.
She couldn’t help that her gaze fell on Luke, strumming away on his guitar in the sleeveless tee that just proved her point from a few nights ago about his arms: he was more than distracting, he was striking, and she couldn’t bring herself to look away. Not as Julie sang like a member of heaven’s choir, not on Alex’s drum solos, never: her eyes were caught on him.
It seemed that quite soon after her eyes had found their home on him, Luke’s eyes found their home on her. As he sang along with Julie, he couldn’t seem to stop the passion in his voice, the unwavering eye contact that the pair held with Y/N letting her know that whatever the lyrics meant, they were for her in some way. The eye contact didn’t go unnoticed by his bandmates, Reggie and Alex finding themselves sharing a glance at Luke’s grin as he sang, Julie getting in on it as they came to the song’s final bridge. Luke dragged his eye contact from Y/N to look over at Julie, who couldn’t stop smiling, wiggling her eyebrows for a moment to make Luke chuckle as he sang.
And then, the song ended, and Y/N watched the boys vanish the same way they appeared, earning another gasp from the crowd before the audience erupted with applause. She took it as her cue to go home, opting to save the congratulations for the band at another time instead of passing them on through Julie.
Within a moment, she was down the street from her home, from the hotel she had called home for 25 years. Each step along the quiet street took her high from the performance further and further away, until it was simply a spark in her heart, and she was humming the song as she started towards the building’s side entrance.
“So, what did you think?” The voice caught Y/N off guard, causing her to spin round with the intention to maim before she matched the voice to the person: Luke was a few paces behind her, still in his clothes from the concert, fiddling with a guitar pick between his fingers.
“You want the honest or the kind review?” She teased back, walking towards him with a smirk, one of her hands coming to undo her first braid. Luke watched for a moment as she quickly unfurled the hair until it bounced past her shoulders in waves, only looking back at her eyes once she had moved to the second braid.
“Honest, always.” Luke replied, smiling as Y/N slipped the hairbands onto her wrist and ran her fingers through her hair before replying.
“Well…” She paused, a smile forming on her face as she shook her head. “I think it might be the best musical performance I’ve ever had the privilege to watch. You were all just… Electric.” She concluded, thinking over each word, leaving Luke with a dumbfounded expression.
“I thought I said honest.” He chuckled, and Y/N grinned.
“The kind review wouldn’t have fluffed your ego so much.” She replied. “Take the truth however you want, but I’ve spent years watching bands perform and I have never seen any as good as you four.” She said with a blush and a smile that Luke could only just catch in the dim lighting.
“Can we go somewhere?” He asked after a moment, causing Y/N to look up into his eyes with a grin.
“The beach two blocks away is deserted any time past 10…” She suggested, and Luke held out his hand to her, offering to travel together. She took it with one last look back at the side door entrance, and for a moment she could have sworn she saw someone… But they disappeared before she had a good look, and a blink later she was on sandy shores, the waves rolling and causing her to smile.
“Where shall we bunker down?” Luke asked, and Y/N kept a tight grip on his hand, leading him to her favourite spot on the beach.
It was on the rocks, far enough back that the sea could never reach it, and high enough that they were given a perfect view of the whole bay, cliffs blocking the crystal clear water in on each side. The rocks were free of algae and moss, and too low for birds’ nests: the perfect spot on the beach.
They found themselves quite soon after sat cross-legged beside one another, watching the stars twinkle above them and the sea roll in, crashing quietly against the rocks further out.
“You certainly found the best spot on the beach.” Luke said after a moment, his voice so quiet it almost blended with the natural sounds around them. He didn’t like the idea of disturbing such tranquillity with his voice, and his choice of volume brought a beautiful smile to Y/N’s face.
“It took me most of my childhood, but I did it.” She said with a half-hearted chuckle, beginning to poke her finger through a hole in her top. Neither of them was quite sure what to say, so Luke took lead, turning 90 degrees to face her, prompting Y/N to do the same, the pair now face to face inside of side by side.
“20 questions, easiest way to get through all the simple stuff.” He proposed, and when not met with a no, he continued. “What’s your full name?”
“Y/N Y/L/N. Yours?”
“Luke Patterson.” He replied, and Y/N got the feeling she knew the name.
“Age. I’m 17.” She asked, and he smiled.
“17, a month away from voting… Favourite colour?”
“Don’t have one and I don’t think you do either.” She responded, met by a laugh and a nod. “Interest outside of performing?”
“Songwriting… You?”
“Nothing really…” She trailed off a little at that, and Luke frowned, reaching out and taking her hand in his.
“When did you die?” He asked, and Y/N smiled. She liked that they had moved on to what they actually wanted to know about each other.
“My birthday in ’95.” She shrugged with a sad smile, and Luke nodded. How uncanny, for her to die on her birthday, for it to be his…
“’95 as well, would you believe… Can I ask another question?” His thumb started rubbing the back of her hand. “How long have you been… Like this?”
“I uh… Coming on 25 years now… But it feels like 7 when you work at the Club.” She shrugged. “I uh… A lot of my co-workers, they tell me about this dark room they were in… Some of them for decades, but it felt like a day… I never got that… Did you?”
“25 years of it, actually… I appeared here about a month ago.” Luke answered, and the pair fell silent for a few minutes. There was a question eating at them both, neither quite courageous enough to ask. Instead, they held one another’s hands, rubbing their thumbs in circles, feeling the occasional jolt of electricity.
“How did it happen?” Y/N finally asked, though when Luke looked up her eyes were on their hands.
“Reggie, Alex and I all died on the same night… Same thing.” Luke sighed, letting out a laugh. “We ate some bad hot dogs, died within the hour.” He shrugged, and Y/N let out a giggle. “Yeah, I know. Weird way to go… What about you?”
“I uh… I don’t know exactly.” She stopped for a moment, removing her hands from his and placing them down on the rock below. “It was my birthday, obviously… My cousin convinced me to get a tattoo, promised me my parents would get over it. So we went to this parlour on the boulevard at Venice, they put on my favourite song to calm me down, the tattoo took maybe a half hour?” She gestured to her wrist, where a stamp from the club lay. “It’s under the stamp now. But anyway, thought my parents wouldn’t mind, but they went crazy. Livid. And I mean I wasn’t a perfect kid by any means, but for whatever reason the tattoo tipped them over the edge. They told me to leave and never come back… And I didn’t.” She looked up finally, seeing Luke’s brows furrowed from her story, urging her to go into the more grisly details.
“It’s been so long I don’t remember my birthday, I never celebrated it enough to care and remember the date, not even as a kid, but I remember that year, on my birthday, it was uncharacteristically cold. Not just for LA, but for the season, whenever it was. And I spent most of that night wandering. I didn’t want my cousin to know the bad news, or my aunt to see the tattoo, so I just wandered… Stumbled upon the beach… Found my rock…” She trailed off for a moment, and Luke glanced down at where he was sat: it became painfully clear that this is where she had died.
“I don’t really know what got me in the end. If it was hypothermia or some undiagnosed heart defect, you know maybe something happened when I fell asleep and I didn’t know. All I do know is… I woke up that next morning and… And I looked at my body from above, and my lips were blue… I went to the funeral, not a lot of people came, and then I just wandered again… Meet Caleb, rest is history.”
“I’m so sorry, Y/N… I really am.” Luke whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek Y/N hadn’t even noticed was there. She sniffled and let out a happy sigh, however forced it was, and patted the stone beneath her.
“It’s just what happened… I’ve enjoyed my afterlife a whole lot more.” She quickly wiped her cheeks again, making sure any stray tears were gone. “Are you better at singing or guitar?” she asked, trying to get the game back on track, and Luke obliged her.
“Well, you tell me. You, after all, are the musical critic.” Luke leaned forward as he spoke, earning a quick intake of breath from his counterpart. It felt nice, making her nervous… It felt nice to talk to a girl again, to hold hands with her like he wasn’t dead…
“Ah, but that’s not fair. I don’t play guitar, I have an uninformed opinion.” She refuted with a smile, and Luke’s eyes seem to light up for a moment.
“You sing?” He asked, and Y/N’s face dropped. She hadn’t said that, had she? But, by saying she didn’t play guitar, she implied she sang. Shit…
“I uh… No, not really.” She tried to brush it away, searching for another question to ask like she could pick it out of the air, but nothing came to her, and Luke watched her quick grab at escape with befuddled amusement.
“Your words say no, the look on your face says yes…” He said, bringing her back from her search with a hand on her shoulder. “I’d love to hear you sometime.”
“What? My voice? No, no you would not. I’m about two paces from a strangled cat compared to you, compared to Julie and the guys? You all sound perfect.” Y/N smiled, blowing a loose strand of hair from her eyes. The wind was picking up a little, and the faintest of tingles brushed their skin.
“Perfect isn’t everything… Seriously, if you ever want to, my offer stands.” Luke smiled at her, and she felt her heart beginning to race a little. His emerald green eyes were boring into her soul, sending a blush to her cheeks and nonsense to her lips.
“I… Uh… I’m…” She didn’t like the feeling, letting her guard down in front of him, letting him in on a guilty pleasure. It felt like she was digging underneath some invisible barricade she had created, stepping into her personal space with reckless care and abandon. “It’s getting late… You should be getting home, as should I.” She said quickly, standing up and brushing off the dust from her shorts. Luke followed suit, a frown on his face at the sudden ending of their get together.
“It was…  It was really nice to see you again.” He said with a half-hearted smile, and Y/N looked up at him.
“You know… Maybe you should think again about Caleb’s offer… I sing sometimes, at work… Just backing vocals really, but.” She stopped, running her hand up her arm as the cold settled into the salty air. As much as she liked her beach, she hated it on nights like this. “I’d really like to see you again… Come by the club if you get a chance…” She said quickly, walking over and pressing a kiss to Luke’s cheek in a surprising turn of events. For a moment, she was so convinced she’s just leave, just let it go and not look back, leave the job up to Willie. And yet, there she was, practically asking him out.
“I will. Come by the club… See you again.” He responded quickly, his hand coming up to his cheek absentmindedly. She just… It left a soft feeling, warm and gentle and he wasn’t quite sure what else, but it made his heart thump a little harder.
He had forgotten what crushing on a girl felt like.
“Good…” She nodded, the pair falling into an awkward silence, neither sure where to go from there. The wind was picking up again, and looking back inland they could both see the sky was slowly changing colour from a midnight blue to a pastel, with tinges of green welcoming a soft yellow. Morning was fast approaching, and they both had places to be. “Well, this is now a little awkward…” Y/N laughed a little, running a hand through her hair. “I’m gonna go… See you around, Denim. Tell your band they were great for me.” She waved her fingers as she took a few steps back, vanishing in a flash and leaving Luke to stare out at the ocean, decorated with the reflection of the overhead stars.
He walked back to Julie’s studio that night, keen to ponder the happenings of the night as he made his way through the city. He didn’t mean to pass the Orpheum on his way, but he did, stopping outside for a moment and glancing up at the neon sign that suddenly flickered off with the morning arriving. By the time he had gotten back to Julie’s, it was about time she would be heading for school, and he entered the studio to three expectant faces: Reggie, Alex, and Julie, all looking fairly worried for his safety.
“Where have you been?” Julie asked, Luke simply shrugging in response as he went over to the couch, lying back on the comfy pillows.
“I went for a walk.” He shrugged, glancing over. Their expressions had changed from worry to excitement all of a sudden, and it was freaking him out. “What?”
“Lipstick on your cheek says otherwise…” Alex mumbled, turning back around to his drum kit as Reggie and Julie sat on each side of Luke, Julie on the couch end and Reggie in the middle, making it rather difficult for Luke to escape. “Never seen you smitten before Luke. Was it the girl from the club again?” Alex asked with a toss of his drumstick, spinning it in the air before catching it with ease and taking a seat at his side of the room.
“Wait, the girl at the bar last night? The one I could see? Y/N?” Julie asked, receiving nods from Alex and Reggie, the latter of whom was closely examining Luke’s cheek. “She was pretty.” She drew the words out in a childish tone, craning her neck and batting her lashes to make Alex laugh from across the room, and Luke frown.
“I can’t believe she would be into you… You should have seen her at the club Julie, apologies again, I mean… She looked like a movie star.” Reggie rambled, and Luke had to flap him off with a laugh.
“Why don’t we stop pestering me about nothing and get back to rehearsal… And you, Julie, need to be at school.” Luke reprimanded her with a grin, “Isn’t it your big dance performance with a Mr Nick?” He teased, quickly getting the attention from him onto Julie as Alex and Reggie bombarded her with questions as she headed for the door.
“We’ve got a gig, tonight. We can sort out the order of the set list later, but pick what you want to show off. Dad’s getting it filmed for us.” Julie called, and she glanced back, catching Luke’s eye as she opened the door, the look they shared letting Luke know he wasn’t done talking about his mystery girl.
--
“You look sad, my little sunset.” A voice called to Y/N from across the club as she stood behind the bar, a row of polished glases to her right. she had spent most of her morning there, and as Caleb’s voice sounded the absentminded movement her fingers played on the countertop halted. The night before had been a success, one she was meant to attend, and by the tone of his voice and the fact he walked to her instead of teleporting, Y/N knew Caleb wasn’t happy with her.
“I’m fine.” She dismissed him and picked up another glass to polish, but the answer clearly wasn’t good enough.  A blunt object came under her chin, Caleb’s cane, tapping her head up and away from the glass she was polishing to look him in the eye.
“Y/N, how long have we worked together?” He asked.
“25 years, Mr Covington.”
“And did I not give you everything you ever wanted? A home, a family, a job you love?” He asked again and Y/N gulped.
“Yes, Mr Covington… You did.” She managed, the cane moving away from her neck, and for a moment she thought she had satisfied his ego.
With a forceful swoop of the cane, Caleb ran the metal topper through the row of freshly cleaned glasses Y/N had been working on, drawing a scream from the girl as glass shattered around them.
“Then why is it you run around behind my back?! HUH?!” He bellowed, and Y/N took a step back, lifting herself onto the back side of the bar to avoid the glass, to be further away from Caleb. “First Willie, now you… Your job was to tempt the boys back to the club, not go to their shows and fall for their lead guitarist, Y/N!” He continued, and she felt a tear roll down her cheek.
“C-caleb I’m… I’m sorry I…” She tried to apologise, but he cut her off as he jumped over the bar, his feet crunching on glass as he landed. Their faces were inches from one another, Y/N doing her best not to let out the sob that was clogging her throat.
“25 years… I taught you every trick in the book, everything I knew. I made you management material, I made you powerful…” He hissed, causing Y/N to flinch. “And look at you… A few days with some 90s teen heartthrob on your mind and it’s all been undone.” He sighed, the disappointment so clear to Y/N, it only made the tears run faster down her cheeks. “Take an hour. By the time you get back, you’ll have left your childish crush and fantasies somewhere else, you’ll come back to work the strong girl I know.” He started away, smashing one last glass for good measure, and earning a scream from the terrified girl.
“Whatever that boy did or said, remember this: love is weakness, and I don’t tolerate the weak.” Caleb reminded her, starting his saunter to wards his apartment, just beyond the backstage area.
“It would be such a shame if I had to let you leave us, Y/N. Weakness is a breach of contract after all.”

'Stupid Cupid, Stop Hitting On Me' by Bluefire510
Juke
Luke, a troublemaker cupid, meets Julie, who is also one of Love HQ's toughest cases to crack.
She claims to have no desire to fall in love.
But Luke is always up for a challenge.
Let's see if he could get Julie to fall for her Perfect Match by next Valentine's Day.... and maybe teach her all about love while he's at it.
*Operation Hashtag Rulie by where_you_go
Reggie/Luke/Julie
“Explain yourselves,” Caleb ground out.
“Uh…it’s not what it looks like?” Reggie tried, wincing.
“Oh really, Reginald? Because it looks like two of my most popular band members from a family-friendly band are fornicating in public!”
-
Julie and Reggie get caught up in a PR misunderstanding that leads to them "dating" for a few months. It's not a big deal, or at least it wouldn't be, if Luke would stop acting so weird.
*Unexpected by Phantom_Lover
Luke is determined to breeze through his senior year and onto mega stardom (which means avoiding school, and Principal Lessa, as much as possible). That is until he's forced to work side-by-side with quiet good-girl, Julie Molina, on the big end-of-the-year talent show. The two struggle to see eye to eye, and meeting the all-important deadline seems impossible until something unexpected happens between them.

Julie Molina has always thought it would be rather exciting to meet a pirate.
Unfortunately, she's right.
"Julie, Julie Patterson, I'm a maid here in the governor's household," she bluffs. And she wishes that Luke's name hadn't been the first that she'd come up with, because the long-haired pirate's eyebrows raise immediately.
"Luke got married?" he says, sounding oddly betrayed.
His blonde companion looks equally gutted. "He didn't even tell us."

Alex Mercer doesn't want to go home for Christmas; but if he has to, he's certainly gonna raise a little hell. Enter: Willie, the cute guy in his history of English class who would be the perfect fake boyfriend candidate.
So if you wanna piss off your parents, date me to scare them, show them you're all grown up. If long hair and tattoos are what attract you, baby then you're in luck.

“I know this is going to sound kinda crazy…but, could you maybe pretend to be in love with me for a few minutes?”
When Julie Molina approaches Luke Patterson at a bar and asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend, she never expects to find herself in a position where she and Luke have to keep up the ruse for longer than five minutes. Figures that out of all of the strangers she could have approached that night, she’d gone and picked the one guy who just so happens to be in a rock band that’s on the brink of blowing up.

julie molina has had nothing but a tough life. after losing both her parents early on, she was left in the care of her step-monster karen and her two step-daughters. while working at her late father's diner, completing household duties and being at karen's beck and call at all hours, julie was well on her way to getting accepted into the college of her dreams and having enough money to move out.
and then one day she received a text message from an unknown number. it started out innocent, crossed wires based on a flyer she put up three years ago.

But it had to be today. Julie had this crazy feeling in her stomach. Not nervous butterflies. More like fireflies that were trying to zap her (Do fireflies electrocute people? She should google that). It felt like that moment her parents spoke about all the time. The day they met. And when they first spoke to each other. Her mom always says that an intense zap went through her whole body.
Are you new or nervous? Julie has been waiting a (short)lifetime to hear those words be said to her.
She walked down a few more steps in the auditorium and found a spot. It was one of the few seats left in the room that wasn’t all the way up in the back. She sat down and settled into the uncomfortable, hard, plastic chair and took a deep shaky breath. The prof was nowhere to be seen. But there was a cute boy in the seat next to her. He had sort of long brown hair that was covered with a grey toque. And he was wearing a cut off t-shirt and you could see his very nice arms. Julie’s breathing was still shaky, and his attractiveness wasn’t helping the situation.

After the whirlwind her life has been since the boys showed up it’s not that surprising that Julie would be a little tired. But is it normal that she’s more exhausted than she’s ever been? With Nick acting weird, Alex and Reggie both wrapped up in their own problems and her relationship with Luke still a big question mark, she has her work cut out for her if she’s looking to sit back and relax.
Basically my ideas and speculation about what season 2 might hold, or at least some of the things I would like to see.
