little things in the wonka score/soundtrack that get me every time: a post made by a music major with severe brainrot (seriously it’s getting bad)
• even though i’m not sure how to feel abt what they did orchestrally to pure imagination when it was sung in full, i loved the way it was interwoven until then-the opening credits, the clock tower chiming its intro, etc
• when the intro to hatful of dreams ends and the instrumental HITS. that was the moment i was sitting in the theater like “…oh i’m going to be so charmed by this movie huh”
• something abt the way timmy sings “i’ve put everything i’ve got into my choc’late”. see above bullet point
• welcome to scrubbit’s has no right to be that much of a banger
• the low brass in scrub scrub HELLOOOOO?!?!? the chromatic slides. the muted trumpets. abacus’ bass moments (go off king). the song is literally about laundry and yet IT GOES SO HARD
• walk into the club on a friday night like FIRST YOU PICK UP THE APPAREL AND YOU
• the instrumental of ynhclt that plays while everyone’s flying is so cheesy and so golden-age-of-hollywood-children’s-musical and i cannot help but smile
• the cuh-lassic “one instrument at a time” opening of sweet tooth
• mathew baynton’s voice. that’s it that’s the bullet point.
• #GiveTheCartelMoreTight3PartHarmonies2k24
• well we’ve got lots and lots and lots and loTS AND LOTS AND LOWHY AM I SINGINGGGGGGG
• somethin about how the “noodle noodle” countermelody is a sort of arpeggiated outline of each chord, like a vocal warmup, like he’s letting her take the melody bc he knows she will in time. i’m gonna sob they’re literally family
• the orchestration of for a moment, esp while they’re dancing on the rooftop, just SOARS. idk if anyone here has seen mr magorium’s wonder emporium but that movie shaped my childhood, it’s probably my favorite film score ever, and this instrumental bit is SOOOO reminiscent of it
• clock tower. a fifty-second masterpiece
• CHOCOPOCALYPSE. (for those of us who were on the theatre kid side of the internet in 2018, i think chocopocalypse should be the new calculust. hear me out)
• mat’s voice gets a second bullet point bc what the hell man. literally the sonic embodiment of dark mint chocolate. h e l p m e
• …#fickelgruberisathinmint2k24
• noodle’s portion of ynhclt, while she’s teaching willy to read, has a few instrumental nods to mozart’s famous sonata in c, a typical piece for piano beginners-kids-to learn. in the 1971 film mrs teavee incorrectly identifies mozart as rachmaninoff. this MOVIE
• i wish there could have been more, and more involved/complex, ensemble vocal moments
• charlotte ritchie <3 (okay i’m biased sue me)
• the new orchestration for the oompa loompa song is straight fire
• the LEITMOTIFS the fucking LEITMOTIFS!!!!!!!! the opening fanfare that became the basis of hatful of dreams popping up here and there. the melody to a world of your own playing whenever he thinks of his mom. every time we think willy’s safe from the cartel, ope there’s that descending major sixth again.
• (now that i think about it. sweet tooth is in g major of all keys, rather atypical of a villain song. most of the intervals are major too. it’s the trembling strings that give it that “evil” sound. and it fits so well-like, “we’re not completely immoral! time for a fun little tango! there’s colorful lights! killthisguyplsOH LOOK CONFETTI!” they’re so sinister i love it)
• the way that the intro to a world of your own echoes the intro to pure imagination
• THE ORCHESTRATION DURING “chocolate bushes, chocolate trees” etc AND THE WAY IT BUILDS OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOD. MY HEART JUST BURSTS. EVERY TIME. I AM NOT IMMUNE TO CHEESY MUSICALS.
• the!! chromatic!! basslines!! in!! that!! song!!!!!!!!
• the fact that the bridge comes before the second verse-name any other songs where that happens i dare you. just another example of willy changing the narrative in every way
• the fact that sorry noodle is AN ENTIRE *OTHER* COUNTERMELODY that then falls back into the for a moment melody at the end what the FUUUUUUUUUUUCK
• the monks chanting “giraffe. a massive giraffe”. so fucking funny
• stripping down pure imagination to its essence while willy sings it to noodle was a thousand percent the right decision. and the lyric changes for the situation are sooooooo clever
• as someone who grew up with the 71 movie and has been utterly enamored with its music her whole life, i’m not the world’s hugest fan of this version’s pure imagination orchestration; i get they felt they had to do something different, it just feels slightly too modern/disneyesque, but it had the vibe that they intended for the end of the movie
• anyway god i love this score

Just rewatched the Royal Ballet’s Alice in Wonderland on marquee.tv* and goodness me but I adore it. It’s not flawless or wholly unproblematic, but it’s so damn fun and ridiculous and clever and (mostly) delightful. And the Tart Adagio is a work of genius. I remain a bit oof about the Duchess scene, and also a bit head-desky about some aspects of the Caterpillar (which I am sure was well-intentioned, but...).
I don’t always rate Lauren Cuthbertson in every role but I find her utterly superb as Alice. Federico Bonnelli as the Knave of Hearts/etc. is adorable. James Hay as the White Rabbit/etc. is incredible and holy shit it must have been intimidating stepping into Ed Watson’s shoes on that! Also I don’t care what anyone says, I think Laura Morera is magnificent as the Queen of Hearts. :D
Also Steven McRae as the Mad Hatter is naturally THE BEST and has no right to be either that hot or that conducive to gender envy. ;-)
And the Cheshire Cat puppet. Aaaah the Cheshire Cat puppet.
It’s not my favourite of the Wheeldon/Talbot ballets because Winter’s Tale exists, but I do love it a lot.
*A planned watch of the Royal Opera’s Don Giovanni having fallen through due to subtitle technical issues; so somewhat of a swerve there. ;-)

A thing about Nigel Godrich that surprises me at times might be his propensity for working mostly with the indie rock or indie rock-adjacent players in his productions. Sure, The Divine Comedy do not seem like an outfit he could've helmed in a studio, though you eventually find out he does make sense in a context with Neil Hannon's project. Regeneration, the LP by the group Godrich collaborated on, may not be Hannon's favourite disc, but I would nicely ask him to reconsider this opinion. You see, the entire thing just soars and I believe Godrich did what he does best, i.e. locating the great of a musician he cooperates with and augmenting the latter. This, of course, means The Divine Comedy never sounded that luxurious.

Wonka (PG): A World of Pure Imagination.
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "Wonka". #WonkaMovie. Superb family musical entertainment. A Christmas gift. Go and see it! 5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Wonka” (2023). I can’t say that I built up very big expectations for “Wonka” from the trailer. But when my illustrious daughter Jenn (follow her hilarious susiesecondhand on Instagram!) gave it 10/10 I thought “Hello… maybe this is something special after all”. And so it turned out to be! I don’t give out many top marks during the year. But in this case, I just had…

Wonka
Tumblr media
Cynicism: a belief that ideas are motivated purely by self-interest; this was my thought process going to the origin story of Willy Wonka. I have more than my fair share of soulless cash grab backstories long before starting my career as a film critic, so I came in to this with a heavy amount of skepticism.
After seeing the first trailer I groaned in a manner similar to an allergic reaction, I came into this movie prepared to be underwhelmed. Funny thing about expectations, sometimes they surprise you.
Wonka is the origin story of the future enigmatic candy mogul, Willy Wonka; he travels to the legendary Gourmet Gallery with only is suitcase and his dreams of making the world’s greatest chocolate in his very own shop.
This movie was a much needed shot of serotonin, and I don’t use that statement lightly.
I guess I should get the negatives out of the way first, because they were few but absolutely need to be pointed out.
I can’t stand the “white savior” trope, and there is a subplot where it’s used and I could have done without it.
Timothee’ Chalamet, is an amazing actor as the title character, but he’s a milquetoast singer. With the exception of “Pure Imagination” I was not impressed by the songs that he led.
His more emotional scenes felt disingenuous at times, the performance while trying to combine the energy of Johnny Depp and the late great Gene Wilder, leaned more towards the former which was a disservice to the character.
All that aside, everyone in this cast gave entertaining performances regardless of my complaints.
Tumblr media
Chalamet’s Wonka performance while somewhat derivative was overall delightful, adding a level of charm and whimsy that the character is known for throughout every incarnation.
Tumblr media
Hugh Grant brought his dry salty wit as Lofty the Oompah Loompah.
The trio of Patterson Joseph, Matt Lucas and Matthew Bayton were hilarious as the bumbling trio of antagonists Slugworth, Prodnose, and Ficklegruber respectively.
Tumblr media
Callah Lane, was delightful in role as the precocious Noodle.
Tumblr media
Olivia Colman and Tom Davis as Mrs. Scrubbit and Mr. Bleecher reminded me of characters from Annie and Les Miserables which is not a negative, but it definitely left an impression.
Keegan Michael Key brought his comedic charm and timing to the role of the chief of police. Some of the gags involving him could have been disastrous, but I was pleasantly surprised by how tasteful they were.
Tumblr media
The visuals were as colorful as the sweets from Wonka’s factory, the settings were magnificent In their diversity, Director Paul King has an amazing eye for mood and setting.
The music composed by Joby Talbot and Neil Hannon, was a spectrum of emotion. The songs were all toe tappers, and I highly recommend copping the OST.
And the choreography is just as solid, sadly I could not find the credits for it as of this writing.
Most importantly Willy Wonka’s mystique is left fully in tact. Paul King and co-writer Simon Faranby, understood what a lot of prequel writers don’t, not every question needs an answer. Willy Wonka just is, and I love that they understand that.
I couldn’t stop smiling as the film continued, it’s warm cup of hot cocoa on a winter’s day and I highly recommend checking it out this holiday season.
Tumblr media
Wonka gets a very solid 4 out of 5.

Nach all dem dummen Zeug endlich mal wieder etwas Hochkultur, passend zur Jahreszeit, auch wenn es gar nicht so wirkt, The Winter's Tale. Nach Shakespeare! Getanzt! Liebe, Eifersucht, Tod, Verdammnis, Verzeihung, Auferstehung, alles geboten. Es ist ganz außerordentlich wunderbar. Zenaida Yanowsky stielt wieder allen die Show.
Tumblr media

:: Trama WONKA ::
