The Future

Time to establish what's going to happen from this point forwards.

The vast majority of you have been exceptionally patient this last year, and for that you have my deepest thanks. You've given me the time to not only write a book, but edit it, and send it off to literary agents, something I would have long given up on doing without the continued support of those who enjoy my writing.

Now that the book is off doing the rounds independently, it's time I got back to Myrk Mire.

Originally Myrk Mire was built in ChoiceScript, a scripting language created by the Choice of Games company. Choice of Games control what is done with their script, understandably, they own it. This does pose some restrictions. I can't, for example, release any paid material built using ChoiceScript unless it is directly through their publishing label. If I do publish under their label, I maintain IP or Intellectual Property Rights, however I also grant them the exclusive rights under perpetual license to publish the multiple choice game 'electronically'.

As you can see from the outline above, they do make exceptions for stories published in non-competing formats, and for sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. However, traditional publishing houses might require stricter control over IP, distribution, and exclusivity. It will only become more and more complicated as things progress, and being locked into a perpetual license agreement of any nature is not a decision to make lightly.

As some of you may be sensing from the tone of all this so far, I'm going to be moving Myrk Mire away from Choice of Games and ChoiceScript, and into a new medium/format.

After tinkering, and trialling with a few alternatives, I've decided to go with Renpy. Renpy, while largely used for visual novel style games and stories, provides a very workable framework for interactive fiction, and is an Open Source script, it isn't beholden to publishing contracts, licence cost, or exclusivity.

I'm not going to be diving into transferring Myrk Mire right away, it's a huge piece of writing, in an entirely different scripting language, and as previously stated, there are a lot of changes I want to implement with the cast. Instead, I'm creating a trial story: One Háḟest Day. My Patrons have been aware of all this for about a month or so, and have already seen some previews.

One Háḟest Day takes place in Aldmirham before the events of Myrk Mire, around the time the Main Character and the Wanderers first arrived in town. The reader will have the choice to follow one of the romanceable characters through a single day, with opportunities to explore their lives and relationships before the Main Character and Child come along. I hope it will provide a proving ground for the changes that previously caused debate, and an opportunity for people to try out the new format and interface.

My plan is to distribute One Háḟest Day through Itch.io, working with their early access framework and voluntary payments for such as soon as one of the character routes is ready to play from beginning to end, updating regularly with the other characters as they too are completed, and with additional features as required. Once the full game is complete, I will release a separate full build with a set minimum price that can be discussed with the community as we move forwards.

At the second, I'm aiming for a web hosted format and a desktop/laptop downloadable format, with phone compatibility to come later down the line once things are stable.

I will post production updates and info when I can to tumblr, though a lot of what I'm doing now is very python coding heavy, so perhaps not that interesting?

I've included some screenshots below of very early development, featuring a Character Log and Word Log that I hope will allow readers to more easily navigate the story. I'm toying with the idea of having a Mysteries Log as well that will keep track of snippets of information gleaned from each character's route, but that can be a tinkering feature for now.

I read them, I write them, I live and breathe them. Absolutely anon, allow me to dive into my bookmarks.

Juncture by @pennflinn may be my favorite fic of all time. Technically he gets kidnapped before the story's events but that's because it's an alternate ending to Escape from Earth-2 (and he is held captive for pretty much the entire fic so). The whump is SUPREME and the overall story is so well written. I will always recommend this fic.

One Second by pennflinn. Another one by penn because she is an incredible writer and HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS FIC!! It takes my favorite premise for a fic "What if Barry was kidnapped in this scene/episode when he wasn't in canon!" and brings it to a WHOLE nother level. This one is diverges from 1x14 "Fallout" where, instead of everyone getting away semi-safely, Eiling kidnaps Barry and whump ensures. BUT there's another twist to this fic that (in my opinion) makes it stand out from many others-- every once in a while, there's a glimpse of a parallel universe where the events were different and let's just say some of those universes h u r t. Also, I wanted to kill Eiling so bad after reading this that I wrote a ficlet with the sole purpose of murdering him :) Anyways, go read; it's amazing.

Miles Through The Night by @hedgiwithapen. First off, this is an everyone whump fic, Barry is not the only one who is kidnapped but 1. IT HURTS GODS IT HURTS SO BAD I'M DYING. 2. The writing is spectacular, all the characters are super well done, and the story is INTENSE I'M STILL DYING SORRY I'LL STOP NOW. In this one-- actually nvm, the actual summary will do it justice. "With Eobard Thawne dead, life in Central City can go back to normalish. But Barry’s greatest enemy is not a speedster from the future fixated on him, and Eobard’s threat may have been the only thing keeping Team Flash safe from someone who doesn’t consider any meta to be human." THAT'S RIGHT-- AN EILING FIC! Just. Go read it, it's so good and I'm dying.

Lightning Bug by Hedgi. The writing in this was SUPERB and Eiling is a fucking bastard as always (count your days general.). And this time we have another speedster in the mix-- a toddler Wally! Ngl, I just reread this while getting the link and it was SO GOOD-- and once again my words can't seem to do it justice so I'll leave you with the summary "Months after the defeat of Zoom, Barry's main concern (aside from the odd metahuman attack) is helping Joe and Iris raise the four and a half year old Speedster Wally West, Cisco-named "Lightning Bug." And while that's hard, it's nice to have this speedster as family, not an enemy. Things are pretty easy.

Unfortunately, that doesn't last. After all, General Eiling's deal was only good for as long as their mutual enemies were still a threat." Eiling needs to die in a ditch as you can see, but there's some really sweet whump in this and it's because of him soooooo-- anyways, go read; it was fantastic.

Can’t Take That Away From Me by SophiaCatherine (or @sophiainspace on here). DUDE. DUDE DUDE DUDE-- I LOVE THIS FIC. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS FIC. EVen once the whump passes, the A N G S T is so delicious! From the beginning of the first chapter alone; you'll see the sweet whump AND angst this fic has in store. Oh, and it's Coldflash which I somehow forgot to mention even though that's a foundation of the entire fic lmao. I love it, go read. Also, there is a sequel but it's not Barry being whumped this time... double also; there's a prequel and it's really sweet (no whump in that one fyi)

I Never Told Him by messedupstargazer. I am SCREAMING. THIS. FIC. Fyi, it's Coldflash. SO MUCH ANGST THE WHUMP-- IT'S SO GOOD I HAVE NO WORDS. DYING DYING DYING I AM DEAD I HAVE PERISHED.

Looking through all of these at once has filled me with many emotions and I apologize if some parts were incoherent. I'm probably missing a few and may add more as I find them but for now I'll finish with these two I wrote.

12 hours Barry's kidnapped before the events of the story but I think it still counts. He's trapped in Zoom's lair and forced to run for twelve hours every day :)

Trophy this is my beloved and the entire fic is a Barry whump fest (and angst. a lot of angst.). (or will be, There's one chapter posted atm) Technically we haven't seen the kidnapping yet but in the first scene he is in a cell so. Premise is that Zoom wins in the season 2 finale and everything goes to hell from there. I do feel obligated to warn though that there's not a happy ending for this one.

𝐇𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬 (𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧).

Sci-fi NA series (6 books) about superhumans (people with superpowers). Due to an accident, hundreds of super end up in jail. The altered are human creations that are getting out of control and threat to break the order. A group of superhumans are selected for their powers to try to stop the altered and the experiments that humans are making with them and creating new drugs. The only problem? These kids are in prison for being super. Will they succeed or will they kill each other before the fun begins? (This is my main wip)

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐧 𝐎𝐧𝐞 (𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧).

This is a prequel trilogy of Hidden Heroes. Sci-fi NA. Set during The Cold War (with some historical changes, just because, lol), a group of superhumans discover that humans are experimenting with them to create a super soldier, someone who can fight their wars and stop them before they even begin. They will have to risk their lives and hearts trying to stop something that seems impossible. First generation.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐲.

Standalone sequel after the events of the Second Generation. Sci-fi NA. Vasilisa Azarova (orphan since 7 years-old) has been trained since she was young to become a lethal spy, trained to kill and torture, and to blend to get information, by a Russian organization that specializes in training humans and superhumans to create the best European spies. During a mission, Vasilisa discovers that the things she's been told all her life, may be lies. Vasilisa and her team will try to scape and destroy the organization that once raised them and trained them. Will she succed, or will she lose everything again?

𝐋𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.

Paranormal urban fantasy YA trilogy. Isabelle Jones is a witch that wants nothing but greatness and to become the greatest witch the world has ever seen. But first, she must understand that the world doesn't revolve around her and that some alliances and friends from her new paranormal school, Ashckerton Academy, are important to defeat the evil that is looming on them.

Pairing: Jake 'Hangman' Seresin x F!Reader

A/N: Doesn't follow the film plot, this is just a prequel

Warning: Talks of cancer, alluded/talks of trauma and PTSD (I have no knowledge of psychology and how the navy works), pregnancy, alcohol consumption, fluff

Another buzz from my phone went off, thinking I can just check it after the session.

"And I think that's okay, you feel frustrated that it happened but you also need to remember that you lived another day, one step at a time" I remind my patient, "Anyway, anything you want to cover in our next session, just write it down and we will go over it"

Letting my patient out the door with a smile on my face and walking over to my desk to check who decided now to annoy me.

UNCLE ICE: Cancel any plans you had for tomorrow night

ME: Why?

UNCLE ICE: You and I are going to an event, find a nice dress.

Rolling my eyes fondly at the obvious order from Uncle Ice, grabbing my bag and walking out my office finished for the day. I guess I have a dress to look for runs across my mind.

NEXT DAY

Finishing up the final touches to my curled updo and lipgloss, I bend over to grab both my clutch and phone. Seeing a text from Uncle Ice to say that the driver is outside causing me to walk out my front door locking it behind me.

As I'm involved with the conversation at the table with Uncle Ice, Aunt Sarah and a few of the older higher ups, looking around the room until my eyes meet a set of gorgeous green eyes a few tables over. Quirking my eyebrow at the obvious wink he sends my way before taking the finishing sip of my drink.

Slowly standing up, excusing myself to my table mates as I walk away to get another drink from the bar. Standing there for a moment before I hear a slight cough and a southern drawl behind me.

"Well aren't you just gorgeous?" Twirling my head around to meet the green eyes of the tall, blonde gentleman in dress whites.

"Does that ever work for you or do you just save it for naval events?" Escapes my lips before I get the chance to stop it.

He slightly chuckles as if what I said was mildly amusing.

"Well tell me if it does" He takes a slight breath thinking I wouldn't notice, "Jake Seresin ma'am and may I ask your name?"

Introducing myself just as the bartender approaches with my drink, thanking them turning back around making my way back to my table. Sipping my drink with every step that I take, he strides up to my left causing my eyebrow to lift at his obvious determination.

"Well may I ask, pretty lady, if I could see you some time?"

Humming to delay my response, " I guess you'll have to find out"

Finally reaching my table, kissing Uncle Ice and Aunt Sarah on their cheeks to let them know of my departure and plans to stop by in the next week.

Grabbing my things and making my way out the main doors, I can still feel his presence one step behind me. Reaching the street, I pull out my phone to order a ride before he slightly covers the screen with his hand.

Looking up at Jake confused, "May I give you a ride home?" He asks almost in a nervous way.

"I don't usually do this but just this once" I reply, kind of shocked that I would actually say that to this Adonis like stranger.

Leading me to his truck, one hand at the small of my back before proceeding to open the passenger door for me and assisting me in.The next 20 minutes in the car was not what I expected. Jake was constantly asking me questions about myself and actually listening to what I had to say, sharing small stories of his life growing up in Texas, shared music taste.

Well let's just say he ended up with my number and a date the next day.

TIME SKIP

6 months into the relationship with Jake and it's going amazing, he is the biggest sweetheart despite having a cocky persona. It seems to everyone else we rushed into this relationship especially since we decided to move in with each other a month ago, but I honestly think Jake is my soulmate no matter what anyone else says.

Its currently December and we're heading up to Texas to spend the holidays with his family. I met Jake's family at the 4 month mark and honestly it felt as if I was one of them. Jake is one of the biggest momma's boy I have met and it both warms and hurts my heart to see.

I explained to Jake my story about my dad passing away in a training accident when I was four, my mom passing away from cancer and the breakdown with my brother Bradley who ended up going to Top Gun at the same time as Jake. He just hugged me as I sobbed my heart out telling him how much I wished my parents could have met him.

His mom Debbie practically adopted me in, teaching me baking recipes and telling me childhood stories of Jake and his siblings that he obviously was too embarrassed about.

I knew I wouldn't have traded that for the world. Only I didn't know what was to come 2-3 months later.

TIME SKIP

After returning home with Jake from the holidays in Texas, I came to the realization that my period was late. Without telling Jake, I decided to go get a pregnancy test or four just to be sure.

Sitting against the bathtub waiting for the timer to go off felt more like hours than it was minutes.

"Sweetheart? Are you in there?" Comes from outside the bathroom door and before I can stand to hide the tests, Jake comes walking in.

"There you are darlin, what are you doing on the-"Cutting himself off from finishing the sentence as he spots the pregnancy tests sitting on the counter.

Taking a deep breath in, "My periods late Jake and so I thought just to rule it out"

As I stand up, the timer goes off. Jake and I both look at each other before he flips one test and I flip another.

Positive they both read

Shocked, we look at each other once again before he suddenly darts towards me picking me up and slightly spins me.

Giggling, "I take it you're excited about it?" struck by the smile that emerges on his face

"Oh sweetheart, you made me the happiest" spinning me around again in our bathroom, sharing a smiled infused kiss

Well I guess we're having a baby.

Some responses

Maybe it's a difference of opinion, but someone who attended the play clarified that by the time Henry got to the UD, he already had his powers because he was able to defend himself while he was there with said powers.

It's not a situation where someone can plop into the Upside Down for 5 minutes and get their powers. Nancy, Joyce, Hopper, Steve and Robin aren't about to become super powered because they were there for a few hours.

I'm not too bothered about Brenner's original interest in the UD. I already knew about the Philadelphia Experiment with the ship and it's relationship with the Montauk Project. It is never mentioned in the show even though the creators of the Montauk Project use it as one of the pinnacles of their "evidence" so seeing it finally tied into stuff here is kinda neat.

It doesn't change much with Brenner's story. I did write a post a while back I think saying I don't think Brenner was aware of other worlds until the incident in 1979, but I guess this disproves that.

He believed in what most people thought was a conspiracy and was finally proven right by what El did in 1979. Brenner's obsessed with El, Henry and the UD makes sense. He's a weirdo fanatic that probably would've written Montauk Project himself if he weren't one of the main people involved with it.

This is not what was stated by the person who saw the play.

Kali's involvement with this doesn't make a ton of sense right now. It's too coincidental that Brenner found a pregnant European woman in the US, had her injected, and then she went back home all chill? Just seems odd. Did he have agents all over the world randomly pricking pregnant woman with Henry's blood, possibly killing most of them, and then taking the children of the ones who showed promise when they were born?

Kali's story would make a lot more sense if there are just naturally gifted people out in the world rather than this blood transfusion story they're going with but whatever.

I have no choice but to believe a lot of women had no idea they were being experimented on in the first place and didn't willingly give up their children.

For example, Terry. She was involved in MKUltra yeah but she supposedly stopped participating when she found out she was pregnant.

Or if we go with the Suspicious Minds explanation, Brenner knew she was pregnant before she did because they took urine samples every visit and he continued to experiment on her anyway. So I suppose the blood transfusion could've happened then.

Then most of the rest of the women I guess were called in my their ogbyn one day like "Hey we need to do this super dangerous blood transfusion. For your health and the baby of course! NO other reason" and they either lived and then their baby got kidnapped or got sick and died.

Contrived...

As for Bob's involvement, doesn't feel like Bob needed to be involved. Nothing against Bob of course...but it is without a doubt a contradiction.

This play has a big issue that I take with many a prequel........ NOT EVERYONE HAS TO KNOW EACH OTHER IN A PREQUEL. I understand the temptation to be like "Hehe, they were connected all along!"

But if the sequel to the prequel makes it clear that that's not the case... then just don't do it. It ends up being cheesy.

This play is like.... a dream where some bits of relevant information are dropped but the rest is kinda like a fanfic reimagining of the story events by the creator themselves.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing. While I can't think of any off the top of my head right now, the creators making an AU version of their story for shits and giggles is not new.

But them insisting this is canon and will be relevant to season 5..... why are you telling people this is 100% canon when it's contradicting your million dollar show?

In the end, I feel like the "THIS IS ALL CANON" stuff is just marketing to get people to come watch it. To me, this is about as canon as that first Will comic and Suspicious Minds.

It's canon.... save the contradicting parts.

So I just finished my fourth read-through of Lingua Franca (and FINALLY twigged onto the fact that I could search you up on tumblr, oops), and saw one of your recent posts tagging The Old Guard. I want to know more, as long as you have the time and motivation for it, of course! I'm so invested in that universe, and so far it's only one fic. Please, if you have any tibits to share, this reader is STARVING for more info on this AU? XD

Thank you so much with your patience in my replying to this ask, @atsuyuri-sama I have been thinking about this ask since you sent it and getting super hyped when i finally had a week where i had enough brain energy to give it the answer you deserve.

First off: !!!! FOUR read-throughs??!? It's mind boggling to think someone enjoyed Lingua Franca so much to reread it three times. You honor me.

On to the question: Since you mentioned really loving the AU and the fact that it's only one fic right now, I think it'd be fun to share what I'm envisioning for the entire series, structure wise.

Lingua Franca (the series) will have 4 parts, one of which is obviously Lingua Franca (the fic) The rest are as follows:

Prima Lingua - A prequel/companion story to Lingua Franca from the perspective of Nicolo. The second chapter of which will have one of my biggest writing experiments to date and I'm very very excited to see how it lands with people.

Nolexi - What happens after Lingua Franca? A very awkward dinner, first off. The title/theme of the work comes from Rudy Francisco's I'll Fly Away which. I highly recommend, especially to any poetry lovers out there OR people who love linguistics.

Code Switch - This is my anthology of pieces set into the Lingua Franca universe that don't fit in well with the main fics but I still feel are important supplementary snapshots into the characters and the events. Here are some of my favorite snapshots I'm going to be exploring:

Andrew is just shy of nine years the first time he accompanies his father on a sea voyage. As with most boys his age, he is brave and curious in equal measure, and can't help but flounce his father's strict orders to stay away from the strange metal box speaking in zeneize. Three decades later, Andrew is cornered in an alleyway on his walk home from the docks. These experiences are related.

Quynh has learned after several lifetimes that while she'll do it for her heart, Andromache has no love and no patience for the task of braiding hair. Luckily, Quynh has an alternative for when she wants to do something complicated with her hair. If it happens to interrupt his reading, that's his problem. (She knows Booker secretly loves helping her with her hair anyway.)

The first thing Copley does, once he's triple checked he's lost all traces of Merrick surveillance, is break into Booker's apartment.

I've got parts and pieces of all three of these fics written but I'm not sure when exactly I'll actually get them published or if I'll wait until i have them all completely written before posting but I hope whenever the time is right and I get the rest of the story shared with you all, it brings you the same satisfaction as Lingua Franca did :)

Your Quidditch series is progressing so well and it’s a joy to see your progress.

Sometimes new series bring surprises with them only the author can see, bts stuff that doesn’t necessarily show in the finished results, at least that’s the experience I have made.

Do you have the feeling it’s in any way different from your previous projects - method of writing, how it feels, building etc.? Or is it more like you general/style of writing mode?

First, thanks for the compliment 😊💙

Now, the answer(s) to the question(s). I can think of one way it is different: I have a beta reader for this series who makes me notice things I hadn't noticed before, so I think that, in the long run, she'll make me a better writer.

Another thing that is different about this series is that it will integrate events from the main story of the game. So while the fics I have written and planned so far concentrate on Alice's early days as a Quidditch player, after the Ravenclaw vs Slytherin match, the fics will take more into account what goes on regarding the Portrait Vault. While my Celestial Ball series (which is kinda the prequel of the Quidditch series) was inspired by the TLSQ around that event, and I did take into account events from Year 5, I didn't rely too much on the in-game events.

Before that series, most of my fics took place in-between in-game events or during the summer, so I just cared about the main thing that happened that year without going into details in my fics. This time around, I actually built a calendar where I placed the different events of Year 5 to better integrate the Quidditch storyline with the Vault storyline, and it's something else that is different from my previous works: more planning.

While some planning was involved in the Brazil series, it was more about what they visited on each day. What happened in those fics was more a spur-of-the-moment thing when I started writing them. With this Quidditch series, I actually write plans to know where I'm going when I actually start writing. There is a perverse effect to that, though: my brain considers this as "the story has been written, so let's move on to something new." Basically, my toddler of a brain doesn't want to write the fic that goes with the plan straight away and wants to do something new and shiny. I still like having things planned out when I do start writing, as it makes things easier when I do start writing.

Like with my other fics, dialogues are an important part of the fics in that series. But that's mostly because I suck at descriptions. I don't think my overall writing style has changed either. Evolved, yes, but no drastic change.

And I still don't post around a set schedule, but I do wait a bit longer before posting.

TL;DR: I plan more than for my other projects, but my style in and of itself has not drastically changed; just evolved.

New Year's Ask Game For Writers

thank you to @crestfallercanyon for creating this and tagging me, and also @blue-summers for tagging me as well!!!

To close out 2023…

1) what fic did you have the most fun writing this year and why? Or, if you can’t decide, what was most fun about writing this year for you?

i gotta go with How Brenda Spied-Her Man, even the title is fun. i had never written a superhero AU before let alone a semi-crossover event like this, and deciding how Minho would be Spider-man was a really fun experiment. i also just really loved creating the dynamic between Brenda and Minho in it, this is one of my favorite versions of them. maybe one day i'll write a sequel fic!

2) what’s a scene/story that you finished and felt “wow, I really accomplished that, that actually went so well”?

it's hard to say a specific scene but i think all of feet on the ground, head in the sky kind of felt like that. i'm proud of a lot of it and surprised i was actually able to pull it off.

3) What helped provide the most inspiration for stories, if anything? Was it poetry? A song on repeat? A gorgeous gifset? A walk outside? A book you read that made you want to change everything? Whatever it was! Tell all.

i think music usually is the main inspiration, i'll hear a line and it will make me think of a character, or a scene, or just general vibes of a WIP. i'm close to publishing speeding 72 which is named after a Momma song and includes some lyrics as paragraph breakers. and the fic itself is a spinoff/prequel to all we do is drive, which is quite obviously a songfic. it's usually a combination of music and me just really wanting to see a specific story be told. i write fic for me first, and everyone else second, to be honest.

4) What is something you want to share about what you’ve written this year? A particular line, a comment that made you feel really good, a scene that was difficult to write — you get to choose! What do you wish someone would ask you about when it comes to what you’ve written?

this is more a funny tidbit that when i was writing feet on the ground, head in the sky, i wanted Brenda to be reading a book, since she does in The Death Cure. but i couldn't tell from the screenshots i took what the book was supposed to be. but through some sleuthing in the Discord, lovely @smalleymcsmall was able to figure out that it was an X-Men book! so Brenda is canonically a fan of the X-Men. i have that as a note at the bottom of the chapter but i was so shocked that Laura was able to figure that out that i want everyone to know.

And to start off 2024…

1) do you have any writing/creation goals for the year? What are they?

if i can get my shit together enough to figure out what to do with this wip i have 34k worth of scenes written for but not enough purpose or structure to continue writing, then i will be unstoppable

2) is there a fic or idea that you’re really excited to be able to continue to work on in the new year?

i'm not excited for the fic i mentioned in the last answer it's more like my curse. but i am excited for the potential for people to see some of those scene cause i do like what i've written. that's the only WIP i have right now amazingly

3) What’s something new in your writing you want to try/are going to try? A different writing style? Different fandom? Darker works? Fluffier? Longer or shorter?

i would love to be able to write short fics again, like 2-5k. for some reason im allergic to fics that are less than 10k. i made some shorter things for Brinho Week which was refreshing so maybe i'll try to do more of those as writing exercises

4) what’s something you love about your own writing that you will continue to appreciate in the new year?

i gotta write more jokes! i gotta get sillier!

About Roboska

I have not abandoned it. I'm too determined to abandon it. Hell, I'll even sell me soul to Satan if he lets me complete this project before I die.

So what the hell am I talking about? Well...

Roboska is a game series that I'm planning on making over the next few...decades. Yeah...this is going to take a while. I don't mind though as this is my magnum opus, my dream game series, the only reason I exist in this world, the thing I really want to make and will do anything to be able to complete it in my vision. I've been working on it (mainly character designs and writing) since I was 12 and it's evolved from just a little animation series I had planned for 2021, to a whole meta multiverse kind of thing. Is it ambitious? Absolutely. However you'll see why I care so damn much about this thing once it actually starts to come out. This will be the highlight of my game development career and I will only be known as "that girl who made roboska" from that day forward.

The first one is "The Sapphic Princess", which I've already started. I've chucked little bits of lore into some of my game jam games so technically the first one is some 400 word visual novel I made in 2 days...Anyway, I tried making this idea back in 2022 but I lost motivation due to the limitations I gave myself. I still released it under the name "Sci-Fi RaiRoboska!?". It sucks and it takes up way too much memory thanks to me being a stubborn little brat who decided to code the entire thing in Scratch. To be fair, this was made before I knew what Godot was. The art is okay, the music is fine, the story really needs some work, overall it's the disappointment of the family and will not be considered canon. I keep it up though as it's part of history and also it explains what I was doing for 10 months of my life. Originally roboska was just that (and 2 squeals I had planned, which I still do to a degree) but it's evolved since then and has crossed over with some other projects that I've abandoned.

The Sapphic Princess (or LV for short) is the indirect prequel to the big one: Roboska: kanjou! It's a remake of Sci-Fi RaiRoboska but with much more content in, way more horror and 4th wall breaks, voice acting, 3D animations and also the planned squeal shoved in as well to make the ending more satisfying. It's in a completely different world with the main link between the 2 being the roboska experiments. Same experiment, different people testing on different worlds. Same with the 3rd one: Roboska: owari. Although that one takes place in the same world as kanjou, just with a different god with different motives testing it. I don't want to go into too much detail, but I've been tweaking and perfecting the story for 3 years now, and will continue to do so. I upload almost every piece of digital art that I do so here's a bunch of roboska art from both LV and kanjou (some of it is outdated).

In conclusion: I did not abandon roboska as a whole, just Sci-Fi RaiRoboska. It has evolved into something much greater than I envisioned and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I enjoy making it.

Also "roboska" doesn't mean anything, it's just a bunch of gibberish I chucked together back in 2021 that sounded cool and I've gotten too attached to it. I'll think of some kind of lore meaning. The closest I've gotten is that the prefix "robo-" means "automation" and suka in japanese (ska is spelt suka in katakana) means a bunch of random stuff according to google:

It's also a russian swear word apparently.

I guess any of these translations could work is you make it very abstract (or if roboska is short for a longer phrase). Roboska is used to describe a pre-destined event where an alien species called "emeraldeyes" directly communicate with humans to "test their limits of imorality" when given the opportunity to screw up fictional lives and not have to face any real world consequences. The idea of losing the lottery could work in the sense of the fictional characters having bad luck for being born just to suffer. I'm not too sure of the name meaning just yet. I'll think of something...eventually. It's a little annoying how tumblr says the username "roboska" is already taken so I had to name the LV blog "roboska-LV" which means I have to keep changing it every time I start work on the next one and make all the previous links to it not work anymore.

Hi so I'm interested in getting into the Kingdom Hearts series but I dont know which games to start, which games to avoid, and whether or not some of the games are canon or not. Could you help me please?

So the best thing you could get if you want to get into the series is this. (ignore the price tag Amazon has on it you can buy it at Walmart for like $20). It includes every game/cutscene movie in the series (except for the mobile game and the recently released Melody of Memory). Either way its the perfect collection to get you caught up to speed (I got caught up back before this complete collection existed so back then there were two collections you had to buy before they compiled them into just one lol). Either way, it includes basically every single thing you’ll need to get the (almost) complete story of KH. When it comes to what you’ll want to experience with it, here’s my take on things (in order of how you should play/watch them and what they are in that collection):

Kingdom Hearts (full game playable in the collection): Absolutely MUST play, its a great game and its story is the most simple in the series, very fun and charming and sets up some of the major characters (namely our main Destiny Trio) very nicely. Even if its not the first timeline wise, you’ll want to start with KH1 because of how it introduces the series and its concepts and characters in the most simplistic of ways

Chain of Memories (full game playable in collection, but honestly? I recommend just watching the cutscenes online its NOT fun to play through in my opinion): Again experience the story of this one at least. Its the direct sequel to KH1 and its where things start to get... kind of confusing. To fully understand what happens in this one, you may have to revisit it more than once, I’ve watched through it twice now and I’m still fucking baffled by a lot of it tbh but it sets up 2 so for that its worthwhile I guess?

358/2 Days (Cutscene Movie in collection); So you can watch all of the cutscenes in this one on the collection in a few hours. Its a pretty touching and emotional story focused on the Sea Salt Trio though it does have some... kind of confusing tangents in it too tbh. Either way its well worth the time to look into to learn more about certain characters, as well as the inner workings of Organization XIII

Kingdom Hearts 2 (full game playable in collection): MUST play, its fantastic tbh. Its often cited as the fandom’s favorite for a reason; it builds a TON on what KH1 set up, offers some really fun Disney worlds, and its plot is absolutely fucking batshit and I love that about it. Highly recommend this one for some of the character moments in it especially there are some really funny, really touching, and really heartbreaking scenes in this one, its a wild ride

Birth By Sleep (full game playable): MUST play though its kind of not that great to play in my opinion? Then again I suck at KH games so I might not be the best to ask in that regard XD Its story is great though, focusing on the Wayfinder trio and their absolute tragic backstory. Speaking of backstories, this a prequel, set like 10 years before KH1, something important to keep in mind going into it to avoid confusion (though you do see younger versions of some characters that show up in the “present” games so I suppose that helps lol)

Re:Coded (cutscene movie): Ugh... honestly? You can skip this one, it adds fucking nothing and its boring as hell to get through. If you really wanna sit through it, feel free to but its mostly a big old confusing waste of time if you ask me, one that doesn’t really add much to the story at all.

Union Cross/KHX/Back Cover: Ok so this is where it gets really confusing. Union Cross is the KH mobile game which I don’t recommend playing because from what I’ve heard its very grindy and basically its “pay to win”; so instead, I recommend getting caught up on this one through watching the “cutscenes” or reading through a plot synopsis online; This is another prequel, set waaaaaay before any of the other games and it has some... stuff thats significant mostly for the sake of KH3 and whatever will likely come after it more than anything else; Its story is... fine. Confusing as hell, but fine. Back Cover is a movie that’s on that collection that tells the story of the Foretellers and its boring as shit but I would recommend at least knowing what happens in it to understand the story of the first Keyblade War.

Dream Drop Distance (full game playable): Absolutely recommend this one, its a delight to play through and has a really fun (but also hella fucking confusing) story (confusing is a word thats very often used to describe KH for a reason XD); Its set after KH2 and follows Sora and Riku and its basically building up towards KH3 and elements that show up there. Again, highly recommend this one its one of my favorites of the bunch

Fragmentary Passage (full game playable): Though that game is only like 2 hours long. This is sort of another prequel though its also set during KH1 and you play as Aqua, who I’m in love with :) It was kind of made as a KH3 tech demo and that’s why its so short but its pretty fun and its story is compelling enough to keep you going as it continues building the way towards 3

Kingdom Hearts 3 (full game playable): Absolutely play this one; I may have my problems with its story, but its a hella fun time gameplay wise and its story has... its moments where its not fucking stupid. Though some of it is fucking stupid and I just have to deal with that :) Anyway KH3 is the conclusion of what’s called the “dark seeker” arc, which is really just the arc where we have Xehanort and the Organization as antagonists, tho knowing this hell series I’m sure they’ll all fucking come back someday :P Anyway its the culmination of a lot of things throughout the series and while some ends aren’t tied up the best, others are beautifully here. Totes recommend even if I personally have a very love/hate relationship with it ^_^

Re:Mind (bonus online purchase): This isn’t a game but its KH3′s DLC and it likely isn’t included in that story so far set. It basically adds more onto KH3′s ending and sets up for whatever game will come next after it (and also sets up MoM)

Melody of Memory (not included in set): The newest game in the series and a rhythm game at that; its largely just a recap of past games and their events, but the gameplay is really fun and addictive, plus KH music slaps. It does have about 15 minutes of brand new story content tacked onto the end of it, which again, is setting up for whatever game likely comes next, but if ya wanna skip it, I wouldn’t blame you, its waaaaaaay too expensive right now, I’d honestly just wait for a price drop :P

Dark Road: This is another mobile game and it basically tells Master Xehanort’s backstory; I personally haven’t looked into this one because I don’t give a single fuck about that asshole’s history but ya can if you want more context into his character I guess :/

And those are all the KH games. There’s a fucking lot of them and I hate them all. I also love them all. I basically love/hate this entire hell series,, so much so that I decided to write a shitty angst fic about it (which I highly recommend if you do actually go through all of the KH games, Keys to the Kingdom is basically an AU of KH3 and also sort of a “fix it fic” of sorts XD its a good, tragic time all around XD (forgive the shameless self promotion)) Anyway, enjoy the insanity that is KH!

So, this is a topic a lot of Rdr2 fan writers have touched upon, but I'm curious about your thoughts on Mary Linton. Do you think she was using Arthur in the events of the game? Do you think she was selfish for not following Arthur or was she reasonable? Do you think it's fair of her to hurt Arthur by stating that "he'll never change"? And while I get the feeling you'll touch this topic in ACW, how do you think Arthur with a new S/O would handle her coming back into his life?

So, Some if you may have read a reply about Mary Linton before and why I felt about her as the way I did, but it wasn’t this specific or mentioning of ACW, so here we go!

Was Mary using Arthur?

Yes.

Love her or hate her, when you respond to Mary’s letter Arthur and meets her outside of Valentine, it becomes very clear that she lured Arthur in with her letter to save her brother, Jamie, from the chelonians (aka the weird turtle cult).

She admits this by saying Arthur is the only person she knows who can help, and she begs him to go and get Jamie back, despite how upset you can tell Arthur is at the prospect.

He makes it obvious when he tells her how he’s not good enough to be her husband, but is perfect to be her knight in shining armor. He even almost leaves before the player is given the choice to help Mary or not.

This continues on with the mission involving her father in Saint Denis, when you have to get back Mary’s broach after her father sells it for drinking and gambling money.

As I mentioned in my previous post, Mary knows Arthur is fiercely loyal. He is one of the most dedicated characters, and he has made many sacrifices over the years that have cost him so much, with even Mary being one of them.

She knows that, and he does. Arthur writes about how Mary can “play him like a fiddle” and “like no one else.” He knows he’s being used, that he’s just falling down the rabbit hole again and he knows where it ends.

But he will always come when Mary calls. Always.

Granted, near the last mission, it is obvious Mary cares for him too. That their spark was never quite snuffed out.

The problem is that the ended for a reason, and no matter how much time passes or what they long for, they are both too stubborn to really compromise for one another.

Saying this though, Arthur did want to leave the gang to be with her if you continue with her side missions, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

It never was, and they both know that.

It’s just a matter of actually admitting it to themselves and each other.

Was she selfish or reasonable when she left?

I would say there is SOME reason in Mary initially rejecting Arthur, but there is a catch that makes it not entirely pure.

It is understandable if Mary broke her engagement off with Arthur if it had solely been about him running with Dutch and remaining an outlaw, but it wasn’t.

It’s stated in the game that the main reason Mary and Arthur split was because of Mary’s father and his intolerance of Arthur, and the hypocrisy of it all.

Arthur hates Mary’s father. And for good reason.

Arthur isn’t a good man, but he is honest about it. He never hid what he was from Mary, and she knew when they got together that he was in the Van Der Linde gang and what he did in it.

But that didn’t matter until Mary’s father put his foot down, saying Mary had no reason to be with someone like Arthur.

It would be rational if his reasoning was that Arthur was too dangerous with his lifestyle for Mary, but it mainly came down to a battle of morals.

Mary’s father views Arthur as scum, a criminal not worthy of his daughter. He constantly drags Arthur into the dirt, and places himself and his daughter up on a pedestal that he deems unreachable by the likes of Arthur.

The problem is, Mary’s father is just as crooked as Arthur in some ways.

He’s a drunkard, a liar, a thief.

While you can argue we don’t know much about him, we do know just from the mission in Saint Denis that heals Mary’s belongings to sell them so he can continuously fuel his addictions at a cost to his family.

The way he talks to Arthur is condescending, and you can tell that there is definitely a war of egos going on between the two men.

It’s pretty much just a pissing war, with Arthur being the main target with even Mary taking jabs at him, and refusing to acknowledge he flaws in her father.

Ultimately, it is why they split.

And that’s why her leaving Arthur isn’t as reasonable as it could be if her intentions were solely based on the clash between her father and Arthur, and her denial to see that her father was only ever calling the kettle black.

I wouldn’t necessarily label it as selfish until she demands that Arthur change, when she can’t even admit that her father isn’t as great as he’s made out to be.

Was it fair of her to tell Arthur he could never change?

Okay, so I do want to say this before I get into the logistics of Mary saying that to Arthur: this game is focused on showing us redemption.

Arthur the entire game, Arthur is reflecting and figuring out if the man he is now is the man he wants to be.

Mary saying this line was assuredly to drive home Arthur’s will to change for the better, or to overall look at himself and know that something needed to be done.

So I wouldn’t entirely say it was all on Mary for that line— it was definitely a ploy by the writers for their overall message in the game.

However, they chose Mary as a conduit to relay this because she is from Arthur’s past, and the reason why they split was, as she says, because Arthur wasn’t willing to part with the gang and change for her.

Once upon a time it may have been true, but things were different. I doubt Dutch was the man we came to know, even in the prequel, and things weren’t going to hell as they were. It was the calm before the storm, so why would Arthur think he needed to pack up and leave when everything was just fine?

But the changes in Dutch and the changes in the world that were driving the life an outlaw to extinction have Arthur reconsidering everything, even before we play. There is doubts being voiced with Arthur as soon as chapter one, and that alone speaks of a great shift within him.

He isn’t blind anymore. He can’t afford to be.

And he sure as hell isnt blind when it comes to himself.

We see how Arthur is changing from the very beginning, and we can tell that he is thinking differently and wondering if this life is worth it anymore.

When Mary says Arthur cannot change, she is only refusing to see what is really happening, like with her father.

As I wrote in another post, she calls upon Arthur and uses him because he is he only person she thinks she can go to when Jamie needs saved, and when her father does too.

She keeps Arthur around and on a string because of what he is. She doesn’t expect him to change because what she asks of him is the very thing she criticizes him for.

And as I said, you cannot expect someone to change when you keep them around for what they already are.

So no, it wasn’t fair of her to say that. Both because Arthur was capable, and she wouldn’t let him prove he did.

And what about ACW or just another significant other being with Arthur when Mary reappears?

Oh anon, I can definitely tell you that Mary will be touched upon and talked about in my fic. There’s no doubt, because Mary is one reason Arthur is the way that he is.

I don’t want to spoil much, or explain things as I intended with the story, but yes— come chapter two, expect Mary to come into the picture.

As for Arthur having a different significant other, they wouldn’t be happy.

It’s obvious that Arthur isn’t over her, that he never quite can be. He is always loyal to her, and even with a significant other, he would more than likely still help Mary when she asked him to.

That being said, he would be able to admit that what they had has passed, and if Mary does express interest, Arthur would just smile sadly at her and tell her it’s a while too late.

He will remain kind to her, but he wouldn’t jeopardize his new relationship over something he knows won’t work out, and is wrong like that.

Of course, there would more than likely be fights between Arthur and his partner. Lingering jealousy, fear of him being unfaithful— of something rekindling.

Him still offering to help Mary won’t help the situation, but it is going to be up to his partner if they want to see through to his intentions.

Which isn’t anything romantic with Mary. For him, it’s a principle thing.

Because his heart is with his partner, no matter what. But he would not leave Mary out to dry just because it no longer lies with her.

With ACW, we’ll see this play out, and I’m pretty excited to portray the tension and conflict when it comes to Mary’s sudden reappearance and calling on Arthur.

Galactic Date Night Shenanigans aka "The one where everything is Balkar's fault." (SWTOR - Theron Shan/Jedi Knight). Theron "disaster spy" Shan is goaded into trying to take his wife out for a nice date for once, and it goes like every other plan these two have ever had anything to do with.

super secret short story/novella project - Okay it's not that super secret, but it is something I'm mostly keeping under my hat for now as I work on it because of reasons, and is actually (inconveniently, for 100 Days of Writing purposes) the main thing I've been working on lately. I expect to be able to say more about it later. Maybe even within the 100 days! We'll see.

southern gothic urban fantasy procedural romance - Faerie Animal Control Warden meets FBI Elf during investigation of a suspicious death out in the kudzu. A little bit of Bright, a bit Mushi-Shi, a drop of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Stuff I Want to Write

Distinct from works in progress in that I have not actually gotten past the planning stage on any of these - if that. A few of these have been rattling around in concept for long enough to have gone through several distinct evolutions without ever getting any writing done on them. Still, hope springs eternal and ideas are never wasted.

Fanfic

the rival bands AU / the rock opera playlist fic (Sailor Moon - Makoto Kino/Nephrite). Currently exists entirely as an incomplete playlist.

space opera Pride and Prejudice retelling - exactly what it sounds like on the tin. Do y'all know I have yet to encounter a futuristic/space AU? Surely there's one out there somewhere, but I have yet to see it. If you know of one, for the love of God don't tell me.

"Ten of Swords" - (Archer EMIYA/Minako Arisato). fate/stay night + Persona 3 Portable crossover what's even wrong with my brain.

the Regency fae story - a Regency-era fantasy in which a lot of the needlessly complicated and restrictive social rules followed by the upper classes are actually an attempt at defending against the Fair Folk. Sort of Pride and Prejudice vs Changeling: the Lost vs Labyrinth. Could turn into a whole Pride and Prejudice retelling, I guess?

drinking games - fantasy imperial court intrigues involving a romance between a court poison taster and a master spy/assassin.

untitled - East/southeast Asian-inspired Beauty and the Beast retelling in which the Beast is a mountain god whose appearance is based on a tiger. I'm probably too white to write this.

untitled - Private investigator hired to investigate local bad-boy-made-good for insurance fraud, turns out it was actually an ill-advised teenage deal with the devil coming due. Might fit in with that other southern gothic urban fantasy idea, I am not sure.

the ciphered letter - This one started off as a combination of a Mage: the Awakening campaign and a really, really weird spam email I got one time. Orphan gets mysterious ciphered letter, meets snarky Welsh mage, awakens to magic and maybe almost gets made a human sacrifice to an eldritch abomination.

Forfeit - Regency/Victorian-esque fantasy involving reincarnation, a race of immortals, and a half-immortal teaming up with a mortal who sacrificed his future reincarnations for pseudo-immortality to uncover and stop the sinister secrets that power a colonizing empire. It makes more sense in my head... probably?

untitled - Slow burn enemies to lovers between the world-conquering emperor and the rebel leader who's opposing him, over the course of a time loop. AKA Lord of Heroes Kartis/Monarch with the serials filed off. Or I guess I could just write Lord of Heroes fanfic?

low fantasy Magnificent Seven Samurai - Farming village scrapes together a group of starving mercs to protect them from marauders, drama ensues. That's it, that's the whole idea.

Unfinished Fics

Distinct from works in progress in that these are all old enough I can no longer claim I intend to finish them. Some of them I may come back to, especially the few that had substantial progress made before they fell by the wayside. Most will probably be left abandoned, either because I have lost interest in continuing to work on them or I have just plain forgotten what I was planning to do with them.

dreameater - A very old, loosely Forgotten Realms-inspired concept involving an aging half-elf, his fully elven partner, and a mysterious magical threat that's devouring people's dreams.

"Fortune Favors the Brave" (Baccano! - Luck Gandor/Eve Genoard). The Luck/Eve shipping fic.

"Intermezzo" (Blood+ City of Nightwalkers). Follow-up fic to an obscure manga prequel/side story for the vampire anime Blood+, involving Hagi and the Hong Kong cop who semi-adopted him that one time.

"The Art of Losing Everything" (Dragon Age: Origins - Alistair Theirin/f!Cousland). An Alistair/f!Warden fic with themes of loss, duty, and sacrifice.

"In Pieces" (Dragon Age II - Fenris/f!Hawke). A terrible horrible no good very bad AU where Hawke actually turned Fenris over to Danarius and then came back to try to fix her mistake, which I can never finish because I can't make that initial decision make internal sense no matter how hard I try.

"Pas de Deux" (Final Fantasy VIII - Squall Leonhart/Rinoa Heartilly). Exploration of how Squall and Rinoa's relationship could develop after the events of the game.

"With Good Intentions" (Final Fantasy VIII - Squall Leonhart/Rinoa Heartilly). An AU in which Rinoa discovers that technically you can change the past, it's just that if Squall has an actual decent childhood the world ends. Way too ambitious for me to ever actually finish, probably, but I can't quite give up on the idea.

"I've Loved These Days" (Gundam SEED - Mu la Flaga/Murrue Ramius). One of several partly-written Gundam SEED fics kicking around in my files.

"The Last Night of the World" (Gundam SEED - Mu la Flaga/Murrue Ramius). Another Gundam SEED fic, one that began as a prompt in ye olde LiveJournal days. "I've Loved These Days" might have been a prototype, though they don't appear to have any text in common. Could in theory still get finished, maybe.

Valentine's ghosts (Gundam SEED Destiny - Andrew Waltfeld/Murrue Ramius). I'm just saying, Andy/Murrue would have been so much more interesting than the whole Neo thing in Destiny.

"Lion Passant" (Kingdom Hearts). Something something Leon as a failed Keyblade Bearer. The Kingdom Hearts franchise has rewritten its own lore at least three times since I originally had the idea, I can't imagine I'll ever continue it now.

"Vigil" (KotOR - Carth Onasi/f!Revan). Carth/Revan retrospective somewhere around the tomb of Naga Sadow on Korriban.

"Semper Fidelis" (KotOR/KotOR II - Carth Onasi/f!Revan). Post-Sith Lords Carth/Revan resolution fic.

"Clarity" (KotOR II). Atton Rand backstory study from the POV of that one nameless Jedi.

"A Simple Game of Cards" (KotOR II - Atton Rand/Jedi Exile). Spoilers: it is never a simple game of cards. Turns out someone already did it with more or less the same twist I had in mind.

the besieged base fic (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). A fic rendition of the "Besieged Base" mission from the first Mass Effect.

"Get Up, Jonah" (Mass Effect). I woke up thinking about Turkish drummers. Didn't take long; I don't know much about Turkish drummers. Virmire, before the other shoe drops.

"Long Night" (Mass Effect). Ashley on Virmire.

"My Heart Dances" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Liara POV of Shepard/Kaidan.

"No Way Out" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Heading up the Citadel during the ME1 endgame.

"Right Here, Right Now" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). An ME1 epilogue / pre-ME2 sort of fic.

"While the Night is Still Young" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Shepard/Kaidan en route to Ilos.

Apparently I had approximately a million little Mass Effect shortfic ideas I never finished and in some cases never started. Apparently they're all for the first game. (I think there was a Thane idea or two for ME2 that I just never started on at all. RIP.)

"To Absent Friends" (Tiger and Bunny). Sad, sad futurefic of an elderly Pao-Lin reflecting on the deaths of all the other heroes over the years.
