The Future
Time to establish what's going to happen from this point forwards.
The vast majority of you have been exceptionally patient this last year, and for that you have my deepest thanks. You've given me the time to not only write a book, but edit it, and send it off to literary agents, something I would have long given up on doing without the continued support of those who enjoy my writing.
Now that the book is off doing the rounds independently, it's time I got back to Myrk Mire.
Originally Myrk Mire was built in ChoiceScript, a scripting language created by the Choice of Games company. Choice of Games control what is done with their script, understandably, they own it. This does pose some restrictions. I can't, for example, release any paid material built using ChoiceScript unless it is directly through their publishing label. If I do publish under their label, I maintain IP or Intellectual Property Rights, however I also grant them the exclusive rights under perpetual license to publish the multiple choice game 'electronically'.
Tumblr media
Source: Choice of Games.com
As you can see from the outline above, they do make exceptions for stories published in non-competing formats, and for sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. However, traditional publishing houses might require stricter control over IP, distribution, and exclusivity. It will only become more and more complicated as things progress, and being locked into a perpetual license agreement of any nature is not a decision to make lightly.
As some of you may be sensing from the tone of all this so far, I'm going to be moving Myrk Mire away from Choice of Games and ChoiceScript, and into a new medium/format.
After tinkering, and trialling with a few alternatives, I've decided to go with Renpy. Renpy, while largely used for visual novel style games and stories, provides a very workable framework for interactive fiction, and is an Open Source script, it isn't beholden to publishing contracts, licence cost, or exclusivity.
I'm not going to be diving into transferring Myrk Mire right away, it's a huge piece of writing, in an entirely different scripting language, and as previously stated, there are a lot of changes I want to implement with the cast. Instead, I'm creating a trial story: One Háḟest Day. My Patrons have been aware of all this for about a month or so, and have already seen some previews.
One Háḟest Day takes place in Aldmirham before the events of Myrk Mire, around the time the Main Character and the Wanderers first arrived in town. The reader will have the choice to follow one of the romanceable characters through a single day, with opportunities to explore their lives and relationships before the Main Character and Child come along. I hope it will provide a proving ground for the changes that previously caused debate, and an opportunity for people to try out the new format and interface.
My plan is to distribute One Háḟest Day through Itch.io, working with their early access framework and voluntary payments for such as soon as one of the character routes is ready to play from beginning to end, updating regularly with the other characters as they too are completed, and with additional features as required. Once the full game is complete, I will release a separate full build with a set minimum price that can be discussed with the community as we move forwards.
At the second, I'm aiming for a web hosted format and a desktop/laptop downloadable format, with phone compatibility to come later down the line once things are stable.
I will post production updates and info when I can to tumblr, though a lot of what I'm doing now is very python coding heavy, so perhaps not that interesting?
I've included some screenshots below of very early development, featuring a Character Log and Word Log that I hope will allow readers to more easily navigate the story. I'm toying with the idea of having a Mysteries Log as well that will keep track of snippets of information gleaned from each character's route, but that can be a tinkering feature for now.
Let me know your thoughts, concerns, or excitement, though do keep all messages objective and polite.

Comfortember Day 30
Moving Forwards
Spoiler: This is an excerpt from The Mandalorian Effect
Din steps back, bending over to put Grogu down in the center of the room, and lowering himself to one knee so they’re more at eyelevel. Across from him are two storage crates which came from the Skywalker home. This probably isn’t the best test, but it will have to do. He needs to be certain about this.
“Kid, I need you to listen to me carefully, alright? I need to know what you want. Do you want to stay with me, or do you want to go the Jetii so you can finish your training? You can take time to think about it.”
Grogu makes a quiet, adamant noise and points towards Din, something which makes Din’s heart melt, but he must be certain, as certain as he can be.
“If you want to stay, go to the right crate.” Din points at it, just to make sure Grogu knows which one it is. “If you want to become a Jetii, go to the left crate. Okay?”
Grogu turns around, looking first right than left, before looking over his shoulder towards Din. Then, he confidently walks straight towards the right crate, stopping when he gets to it, and beams up at Din with a quiet coo.
Din wastes no time scooping his kid into his arms. His kid. It hardly even seems real that Grogu wants to stay with him, that the child thinks so highly of him that he would rather remain with him instead of going back to his own people. “Ni kyr’tayli gai sa’ad,” he whispers to Grogu, uttering the Mando’a words for a formal adoption. As of now, Grogu truly is his foundling, his child, and Din is bound to do whatever he must to raise him as a Mandalorian. “That means,” he manages to say, “In Basic, that… you are my child. It’s an adoption vow.”
The kid actually squeals at that, plastering himself to Din’s armor. It’s about the biggest hug Grogu is capable of him, and doesn’t that make him melt entirely? Din cradles the child against his chest, lightly stroking his head. This is… perfect. He had feared, so much, what it would be like when Grogu inevitably was returned to the Jetii. But that isn’t going to happen now, and Din finds that he’s selfishly glad, because he cannot, under any circumstances, imagine living without Grogu following him around everywhere.
“Ni kar’tayl gar darasuum, ad’ika,” he whispers. I love you, little one. Grogu pats his chestplate with a coo, and Din chooses to believe that it’s a ‘me too’.

January 2022
i got rid of the devil. but was i attacked by the devil today. yes. i was attacked by the devil multiple times today. only the devil would tell me that i have to kill off all children immediately and cannot tend to my beautiful earth creation. someone just told me to kill off the children twice. this is why the new earth will be a while to be available to all of us. i have fought with my every waking, sleeping, last breath to get us into safety. and legit.... been attacked all day every day for sticking up for the kids. there willl be reincarnation because of the way you treated me. because of my spirit and it being holy true and perfect in comparison to you motherfu*kers. all of you who think that you're gonna get off easy or gonna just be able to ascend into the new earth it isn't that easy. you will stay on the earth like i did and struggle. you will want the new earth so bad you would die for it and still be in Armageddon. this earth is the most pathetic place in all universes to all day every day watch me tend to her creation, children plants and animals and still tell me you have to kill them all. i will kill of all of you instead, let the good reincarnate. it is completely safe as long as they are on a planet. i'm removing all forceful ways this is the devil itself, the ways of forcefulness. the planetary body is operating AS the devil itself. soon we will be freed. I HAVE LIVED AND DIED FOR THIS - I'M LIVING IN A HOME THOSE ARE THE THINGS WE HAVE BEEN PROGRAMMED TO DO AS WELL. IN CHRISTIANITY WHAT I'M FORCED TO BELIEVE IN MY FATHERS HOME WE WOULD ACCEPT OUR FRIENDS INTO ALL OF OUR HEAVENLY HOMES (DIFF ONES OF COURSE) AND I CANNOT COME INTO ALIGNMENT WITH OTHER BELIEFS FOR AS LONG AS I STAY HERE. you have let me be here life. that is for a reason. if we were someone in the stacy family and found out our child was Creator of planets they WOULD allow their friends to pass and only the devil would say they cannot. fuck all of you who expected me to completely wipe out humanity but you can't even kill them and just wanted to take it out on me instead. YOU'LL LEARN. you'll see i cannot just kill them and i didn't want to to begin with. i am goodness truth unconditional love and light.
we will be safe soon.. the planet and jesus will care about the world again. THEY DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO OPERATE AS THE DEVIL ANYMORE. they hated you they wanted you to die. they wanted to posess me to kill you. they wanted me to hate you. and wanted me to stay on the planet and expected me to just hate you and continue living here all day everyday.....

Please share propaganda in the notes!
EDIT since this has breached containment! Some info on the poll as whole!
1- I'm sorry to put two bad bitches against each other. The bracket setup was randomly selected, not seeded to have equal match-ups. BUT there will be a revival round! 2- Image descriptions are in the ALT text. 3- As always, there is a real human person running these, so keep negative propaganda to a minimum in the notes. Talk up your faves as much as you want, but don't shit-talk the other option.
Thanks!

The thing that is striking me the most about this album is just how messy and human it is. She’s not holding anything back or trying to appear one way or another. She’s just letting it all out regardless of what anyone might say. She found that trying to be polished and keep all the ugly, imperfect, human stuff in to be stifling and just said fuck it I need to do this for me. This album was an exorcism for her.

the tiktokification of ao3
or: some of you fundamentally misunderstand ao3 and it really, really shows
i was talking about this with a friend a few days ago and since then i've seen multiple posts of various sorts that have just made me think about it more, so. here is me breaking down a disconnect i see particularly with younger members of the marauders fandom (i say marauders specifically just bc that's the only one i'm plugged into):
okay, so i've seen many (usually younger) marauders fans either talking online about how they wish ao3 was more like social media (specifically regarding algorithms) OR talking about ao3/fanfiction/fanfic writers as if they are operating under the same etiquette/guidelines/assumptions they would bring into social media platforms. this ranges from being mildly irritating to genuinely harmful, and i want to talk abt why.
first - you have to understand that social media, in this day and age, exists in a profit economy. and when i say social media here, i'm referring to platforms like tiktok, twitter, instagram, etc. all of these platforms exist in a profit economy where content is a product that can be monetized. this leads to a few important distinctions:
people posting on these social media platforms are generally posting with the intent to get their content seen by as many people as possible, as quickly as possible
they post with this intent because once their content is consumed by enough people, it becomes a product that they can monetize
therefore, if that content gets popular enough, these people can become influencers, where content creation is an actual job and their audience are, in a sort of vague and obscured way, similar to consumers purchasing a product
because of the profit economy surrounding social media, there are certain assumptions + forms of interaction that bleed across almost all social media platforms. the ones relevant to this little essay include:
operating under the assumption that anyone posting anything on the internet wants to go viral, ie. be seen by as many people as possible as quickly as possible in order to grow an "audience"
these influencers are creating content for us, their audience, so they should want to please us. they should also be trying to appeal to the broadest possible audience. therefore, if we dislike their content, we have a right to make that very, very clear.
in that same vein, we have a general right to critique content creators, as they are making a profit and we are the consumers purchasing their product--much like you might feel entitled to a certain standard of service in a restaurant where you are paying for the food.
when you carry these assumptions over to a platform like ao3, it creates problems. why? in a nutshell: because ao3 exists outside the profit economy
ao3 is a non-profit. it does not have an algorithm because it is not trying to sell you anything. this means that the writers posting their work on ao3 are not making a profit. we are not influencers. we are not creating monetized content to sell to a consumer-audience. where consuming content on other social media platforms might be comparable to eating at a restaurant, reading fanfiction on ao3 is more like coming over to someone's house and eating cookies that they made for free. you are in their house. the cookies are free, given as a gift. so what happens when those assumptions outlined above start to bleed over from other social media?
assuming that anyone posting fanfiction online wants their work to go viral -- i've seen this with popular fic writers getting questions like, "are you worried x isn't going to be as popular as y?" those questions are usually not ill-intended, but they demonstrate a fundamental lack of understanding about why writers post work on ao3. it's not to go viral. it's not to build any sort of online following. most of us who post on ao3 have jobs or schoolwork or other commitments, and writing fanfiction is something done for fun, out of a love for writing. those sharing their work online might be seeking community, but that is fundamentally different from seeking an audience, and in no way involves internet virality. if someone is posting fanfic on ao3 with the hope that it'll "go viral," then they likely either won't continue writing fanfic for long or will reach a point where they have to re-evalute their motivations, because seeking joy and validation by turning your art into a product for consumption just isn't very sustainable.
influencers are creating content for us, so we have a right to let them know if we don't like it -- nope!! fic writers are not influencers. yes, even the popular ones. no matter how much other people might blow their work up on social media, fic writers are still outside the profit economy. they are not creating content for an audience. they are not creating content for you. they are writing because they love it, and they are generously sharing it. if you don't like it, don't interact with it. you are never entitled to loudly and publicly proclaim how much you dislike a fic. i talk about this more here
we have a general right to critique fic writers, the same way we do with content creators/influencers -- again, no. you should not be treating fic writers the way you would treat an influencer on another social media platform, no matter how popular they may be. this is not to say fic writers are beyond all reproach; rather, it is a call-in to check your entitlement. fic writers are not little jesters entertaining in your court. they are not subject to your whims. they do not have to do things for you. they do not have to write things you like. in that post i linked on point 2, i talk about what etiquette might look like if you're really concerned that a fic writer is doing something harmful, but that is not what i'm talking about here. i am talking about the proliferation of negativity i have seen, especially on twitter and tiktok, where people essentially just talk shit about fics or fic writers as though they are entitled to have those fic writers working to please them. this is gross, and it needs to stop. you wouldn't go over to someone's house, eat the cookies they baked to share, and then spit those cookies back in their face and start shouting about what a shitty baker they are. or maybe you would--in which case, congratulations! you are Not A Good Person.
anyway, at the end of the day, a lot of this can be boiled down to: Because ao3 exists outside the profit economy, fic writers are not influencers, and you should never be treating them as though they are. i think i see this disconnect largely with younger people just because they've maybe only ever really understood social media within this sort of influencer-consumer-culture economy, and genuinely don't understand how to interact differently with the internet. so, consider this post a call-in to reevaluate the way you interact with fic writers and the etiquette you use when it comes to engaging with fanfic on ao3! i promise that ao3 being different from social media is a very, very good thing, and also a very, very rare thing, so let's treasure it and focus on fostering community rather than trying to morph it to fit the mould of influencer-audience dynamics that we see almost everywhere else <3

Something I really don't understand is this obsession the anti-Israel crowd (in the West) have with death and martyrdom. All they care about is dying, and often killing for their cause; I see nothing about building a better future that isn't based on the murder of 9 million Israelis.
It's easy to die for a cause. The challenge is living to make a better tomorrow.

Y’all I’m literally never going to be okay about Simon and Betty.
Simon realising that their whole relationship he hadn’t been examining why Betty always followed him because he was too focused on his love for her and not what she really needed. Not what they both really needed.
The devastating parallel of Betty being so blindly in love with Simon that she willingly and unthinkingly always put him first. And Simon being so blindingly in love with Betty that he saw her being happy and so never thought to fucking question whether those were the right decisions to make. Enabling them every time because they were in love and that was what she wanted, right? She wanted to be with him. She loved him. She was happy. So why would he think it should be any different?
And Betty reassuring Simon that she made her own choices. That he didn’t hold her anywhere. That he never forced her to be with him, or put him first. That she made those decisions and that she didn’t have any regrets. But that they both had to let this go because as long as they were focused on each other neither of them were ever going to be able to have the life they needed.
That they had both been trapped for so long carving pieces of themselves out for other people. Betty in her blind devotion when it came to Simon. Simon in his belief that his crimes as the Ice King, and that all the ways he had let down Betty, meant the only purpose and worth he could have was in sacrificing himself for others.
That they both deserved self-possession and the ability to find autonomy and actualisation as individuals. That they deserved to make their own choices, the good and the bad, and just live without the blind devotion, and guilt, and sacrifice that was going to trap them in this loop forever.
That they meant everything to each other, but that now they needed to mean everything to themselves. That the only way forward was on different paths, but that they both deserved that. That they were able to show each other that they deserved that.
That Simon gets to live now.
I will never be okay about this show. Or these two.
