In straight relationships, men are depicted as sexually aggressive pursuers while women are coy, chaste, and prefer romance over sex. Men are active subjects who chase their desires while women are passive objects who are desired and resist their pursuers.

Batman Returns flips this script by having Selina initiate most of the sexual interactions between her and Bruce. She kisses him first. She suggests they slip out of a party to a “big comfy California king.” She straddles him in her dominatrix-esque Catwoman persona and licks his face in an overtly sexual way. Even with men other than Bruce, (like Oswald and her post-Catwoman interactions with Shreck) she takes on the role of a seductress who uses her sex appeal to get what she wants and taunt the men around her.

Meanwhile, Bruce initiates more romantic interactions. He invites her to his home for a dinner date. He goes to Shreck’s party just in the hopes of seeing her. At the end, he suggests she stay with him so they can be committed partners. He romantically longs for and misses her after she’s gone. He's visibly softer and more emotional with her.

Batman Returns spits in the face of gender stereotypes by depicting a genuinely romantic relationship where the woman is sexually empowered and the man is happy to let her take the lead even though that man is literally Batman. In this essay I will—

One time I walked into a bar and the bartender looked at me and said “Hey! I am ready for more train facts!”

I had never seen this person in my life, but apparently another woman, who also happened to be a transwoman, and who looked a lot like me sat at the bar and told her a bunch of facts about trains.

Ok, I recently wrote an essay [here] talking about the definition and duties of civil engineering as well as the ethics because of the brain rot @swordfright gave me with calling Dream Sam’s ultimate engineering project. So, because I actually am a civil engineer I took it upon myself to design the title and summary of quantities sheets just like I do at work for roads but with Dream as the project instead. And in honor of angst day sponsored by @sixteenth-day-event, I figured I’d share it because I feel like it kinda works for the prison of the mind prompt.

“Sam’s “ultimate engineering project” he deemed too damaged like a bumpy road or crumbling building that wasn’t worthy of patching and filling in the cracks or reinforcing, that’s too eroded to be fixed and preserved. So, Sam strived to tear him down to the bedrock so he could remake, remold, and reengineer Dream according to his design for the common safety, public health and well-fair.”

{These are very similar to the actual sheets I make day to day, which I shall not share for the sake of doxing my location, but yea pretty much everything has a significance. Some of it doesn’t necessarily make sense but that was because I was more so taking inventory of what we see in lore (so you know I counted ;) lol)}

I just-

the way that queerness actually is shown fairly historically accurate in the show but not to the point where the lgbt community feels like 1-dimensional victims instead of people. The world is still the same as ours, Homophobia is there, it’s just… quiet. It’s not constant aggressive action, or violence permeating every moment of their lives… it’s the background noise.

It’s in the bullying Stede endures for not performing the ideal masculine, but it’s also the simple expectation and eventually enforcement that he’ll marry a woman. It’s in “anything goes at sea” and the calm, almost practiced defensiveness that prompted such a statement. The small confirmation that Hornigold would lose his mind at Ed having breakfast at a table every morning with Stede.

It’s not just seen in queer sorrow but community as well, even joy. How Lucius looks after Jim, Stede, and Ed once their queerness is known to him. How Ed kisses Stede in a quiet place away from expected public, the refusal to discuss Blackbeard further when the truth of being “lovely” to another man garners unsavory looks. In the best circumstances, protecting one another in a world that isn’t built for us is like breathing.

It even comes from people with no ill intentions. Mary doesn’t mean anything by “what’s her name?” but it tells us something anyway, about the world these characters inhabit. About which ones can step comfortably through it, and which ones must think carefully before even revealing they lack such luxury. The quiet understanding in tossing a stone in that perfect path by saying “his name is Ed.” It means something that she reacts in surprise, pleasant surprise, but surprise none the less.

It’s not a show without homophobia, but it’s not a show about it either. It manifests in the narrative the same way it does for most of us day to day: the white noise of heteronormativity.
