A few reminders about starting your Degree.

My masters is starting tomorrow - actually, it’s fresher’s week but still - so I wanted to take the time to remind myself (and potentially others as well as many courses are starting around this time) of a couple of things:

It’s okay to feel nervous when starting a new degree, maybe even at a new university. I’m starting my masters so I’m technically “used to it”. But I’m still anxious about a lot of things.

Related to that: Don’t feel stupid if you’re already worrying about what to wear, how to speak to others and all of that. Prepare as much as you can, there’s no shame in laying out your clothes a couple of days before (or is it just me?) or making a plan of what to do on campus in your free time. You need it - you do it.

People focus on all sorts of things. What you want to achieve with your degree might be completely different from what somebody else has in mind. I’m really seeing this degree as a way of building a career and advancing in academics but others might see it primarly as an opportunity to network in other fields. Just make sure you know what you want from it.

Similar to that, it’s okay if you don’t know where you’re going with your degree yet. You’re just at the start, and a lot of people will say crazy things like “I’ll work for this internationally recognized company once I’m done here” but they might not end up doing so. Figure it out step by step. Stay on track, stay curious, stay open-minded, you’ll find where you will want to go.

Day 1 of the Studyblr Community Challenge(yes, in the middle of October😭) // Introduce yourself and tell us what you study!

I can’t believe it’s halfway through October already, where did the time go?? Anyways, I’m Alina, a third year studying Sociology and minoring in Asian American Studies! Currently balancing academics with studying for the LSAT.

I started this studyblr when I was a sophomore in high school, but once I went on to college I kinda forgot about this blog because I was so busy, but now that school is online and most of my hours are spent studying, I’m hoping to start this up again and meet new people in the studyblr community!

Career Changes and Uncertainty

For the past year, bordering on two, I have not been active on here except as a lurker, and even then, tumblr has been an app that takes up a little space on my phone. I don’t get on here ever anymore, and while I miss it, I also think that having a studyblr and buying into this idea that I needed to grind and grind and grind allowed me to pretend for too long that I still wanted to be a doctor. I was stuck on a career path that I knew deep down that I did not want anymore, and my decision to drop premed and focus on my biology degree without showcasing my notes or my desk or how productive I was allowed me to appreciate biology for what it is.

And now, with COVID and the fact that I have no idea whether I want to go into research or academia, I am heavily considering taking a gap year...or five. What if I spent my twenties as a research assistant in a lab and paid off at least some of my student loans and then go to grad school? Or what if I decide after I get my bachelors in biology that I love advocacy more than research and want to get a degree in social work so that I can work in the disability community?

All of that being said, I believe that maybe it’s a good idea to start being active on here again. I have so much love for this community and it did make me feel proud of the things that I was doing. So, hi tumblr. I’m back.
