Struggling with something, failing has a great effect--a gap opens, you realize you don't know everything--a little emptiness forms where you can receive something. Particularly in our Western ambitious, productive, drill, workout society it is hard to hear what's at our backs; we only pay attention to what's in front, advancing, a goal. Not succeeding brings us to the ground, to look outside our shell, to even use the small word we are afraid to use: help. [Practice is] something you choose to do on a regular basis with no vision of an outcome; the aim is not improvement, not getting somewhere. You do it because you do it. You show up whether you want to or not.

There's an old adage in writing: 'Don't tell, but show.' What does this actually mean? It means don't tell us about anger (or any of those big words like honesty, truth, hate, love, sorrow, life, justice, etc); show us what made you angry. We will read it and feel angry. Don't tell the readers what to feel. Show them the situation, and that feeling will awaken in them.

If you begin too exactly, you will stay precise, but never hit the exact mark.
Natalie Goldberg, Getting Down the Bones (Shambhala, 1986)
I love this walk.
I love the unseasonably mild autumn days when the runners dominate the path. I love the grim days where I only pass anoraked dog walkers. I love the lycra-clad, fast-peddling office commuters on the river path and the men walking home in their…

One more chapter until the end of “Writing Down the Bones”. I find I’m a little sad that it’s coming to an end because the author is so inspiring. Hearing her voice and her passion sets fire 🔥 to your own and sets your mind a buzz with ideas. This book is one I know I will revisit in times of need of inspiration. #audiobook #audiobooks #writersofinstagram #writing #nataliegoldberg #adultcoloringbook #inspiration #creative #creativehappylife #mindfulness #innerpeace
