Bethany darling, is Nancy Drew a... Riverdale?
I want to watch it (your fault) but I don't care for either:
A) the possibility of a crossover that means I have to catch up on Riverdale or watch Sabrina (2 spoopy for me)
B) shows about teens I feel watching kiss that suddenly become supernatural
I am possibly interested in the non-riverdale class, C) shows that are gently spooky anyway (like your Buffys or Classssss)
Thank x
I’ve not watched Riverdale, except on my tumblr dash with a mildly horrified fascination. But I don’t think Nancy Drew is a Riverdale. (I also didn’t watch Buffy. I knooow, but honestly it’s not likely to happen at this point—sorry, everyone who’s been yelling at me for years to watch it).
Nancy Drew is NOT a crossover. You don’t need to watch anything else to watch Nancy Drew. (There is a backdoor pilot for another CW show, Tom Swift, in S2, but that show was sadly short-lived.)
The supernatural is real in this version of Nancy Drew—ghosts, magic, witches, curses. This differs from the novels, in which (like Scooby Doo) what appeared to be supernatural almost always had a human villain behind it. I actually watched the pilot episode when it aired, because I'm a lifelong Nancy Drew fan, and while it was good, the supernatural elements made me think maybe it wasn't for me.
That said, the supernatural is used very effectively in this show, and usually it's related to or reflects some kind of trauma. And I'm a huge wimp when it comes to scary stuff, and I can handle Nancy Drew, which is more spooky than truly scary. So it turned out I didn't mind the supernatural aspect at all, largely because the characters are so lovable.
You don't have to be a fan of the novels or the games to enjoy this show, either! Many of the characters are the same, and have similar personalities and relationships as in the original canon, but it's really an AU. In addition to the supernatural elements, Nancy and the other characters are a bit older, and it's set in a totally different location. There are lots of easter eggs and references to canon for fans to enjoy, but it won't detract from anyone's enjoyment in the slightest to not catch those.
It's a thoughtful, well-written, well-acted show that seems to be made by lots of people who care about what they're doing and want to create the best story possible. The story arcs are clearly planned carefully and they don't deviate from their plans just because the audience might be guessing where the story is headed. In fact, the show's production was interrupted toward the end of S1 because of the pandemic, and when they were able to film again, they finished the S1 story and only then did they move on to the story they had planned for S2, which I love.
In conclusion, yes, I definitely recommend watching Nancy Drew! Yw! xx

Dead Boy Detectives issue 1
I just read The Dead Boy Detectives issue 1 under The Sandman Universe banner.   It’s sad to see that banner struggle to stay in existence.  When it first started in 2018 we had The Dreaming (reboot), Books of Magic (Soft reboot), Lucifer (reboot), and the new original title, House of Whispers. Then came John Constantine: Hellraiser, The Dreaming: Waking Hours (twelve issue mini-series) and The Locke & Key Crossover from IDW.  After that was the short lived The Corinthian: Nightmare Country, and now The Dead Boy Detectives (soft reboot) and soon there will be Nightmare Country: Glass House (Coming this spring). This version of Dead Boy Detectives is written in such a way that you can just ignore the previous Dead Boy Detectives comics. This is deliberate to make it easy for new readers (as the original version has been out of print for some time) and to also serve as a marketing tie-in for the up-coming HBO Max Dead Boy Detectives TV series, spun off from Doom Patrol (but with different actors).
It’s interesting to note that in Doom Patrol one of The Dead Boy Detectives was played by Ty Tennant (Son of David Tennant) and David Tennant has worked with Neil Gaiman repeatedly for The Sandman audio drama (where he’s Loki), The Sandman Netflix series (He was in Dream of a thousand cats) and in Good Omens where he plays Crowley.  He was also the tenth actor to play The Doctor on Doctor Who and his wife played The Doctor’s daughter, and his father-in-law played a previous doctor. HIs wife, Georgia Tennant, also had a brief appearance in The Sandman Netflix series episode Dream of a Thousand Cats.
Another interesting thing to note is The Dead Boy Detectives (though the show will be a spin-off of Doom Patrol) actually originated from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman: Volume 4: Season of Mists.   The boys are two ghosts introduced in issue 25 of The Sandman comics (I forget what chapter number in the audio drama but I know it’s in The Sandman: Act 2 of the audio drama, I just can’t recall what chapter).
The two ghost protagonists are Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland, two ghost children who read far too many Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew style young adult fiction and now think they have the knowledge required to function as detectives. But the real supernatural world and crime worlds intermingle into something far dark than the two ghost boys are prepared for.
The boys were roughly twelve or so years old when they died in the original version of the story but are bumped up to be in their late teens for Doom Patrol where Edwin was revealed to be gay and attracted to Charles, who seems quite oblivious.  Honestly, I never thought of them as having romantic interests in anyone because I always saw the characters as children.  The new TV version makes them older to accommodate for romantic storylines.
Anyway, I read the first issue of the soft reboot and it gives you a brief recap of how each of the boys died without going into too much detail about what was going on in The Sandman to cause the two children ghosts to initially meet.   Poor Edwin was killed by some wanna-be Satanists in the school attic.  And Charles was killed in the late twentieth century by the very same bullies who murdered Edwin, because they had been released from Hell when Lucifer quit to live on Earth and take up piano. (the main plot of The Sandman: Season of Mists and the TV series Lucifer). What I never liked about The Sandman comics was the idea of an innocent going to Hell and Death incarnate (who is portrayed as a kind woman) allowing that to happen. Because poor Edwin had also been trapped in Hell and he had no reason to be there except that he died thinking that’s where he’d go and for some reason Death, (who again is supposed to be kind) did not intercede even though we see her use her brother, Morpheus to rescue another soul from eternal torment later in The Sandman (See the Prez Rickards story in The Sandman: Words’ End).   I kind of hope poor Edwin’s origin is changed for the new HBO Max series and The Sandman Netflix series since it never quite sat right for me that an innocent child was in Hell, whether “Clerical error” or not.
Most of the first issue is pretty generic and just tells you the basics about Edwin and Charles while a few grizzly things are going on.   It turns out the three-thousand-year-old witch, Thessaly, is being held prisoner by someone and is being forced to use her powers for them.
I was never a big fan of the character Thessaly in The Sandman comics.  I’m not sure why the new Sandman Universe titles are trying to use her so heavily.  First she appeared in The Corinthian: Nightmare Country and now here. I suspect the plots are linked.
As I said, I was never a big fan of Thessaly. For starters, she was very much a TERF in her original comic depiction in The Sandman: A Game of you.  Yes, her TERFyness was downplayed for The Sandman audio drama but that doesn’t undo the original depiction, not really.
Also she was not a very sympathetic character to begin with. She was cold and sort of reflected what Morpheus was before his character growth.  She was also homicidal and selfish.  She sold Morpheus out to The Kindly Ones just to extend her already very long life and so they would look the other way for her own misdeeds.
Still, she was the most interesting part of the new Dead Boy Detectives soft reboot.  Seeing her in captivity was deliberately reminiscent of Morpheus’s captivity from the first issue / chapter of The Sandman.  And it makes me curious about how she’ll get her revenge- not if- but when she gets her revenge.

Let me introduce you to one of my other muses!
Okay but lemme gush about my favorite OC real quick.
Tumblr media
Taylor Lillian Borelli is a crossover muse, set primarily in the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew and Supernatural universe. She's a white witch, descended from one of the very first witches blessed by Hekate, and she's been trained as a government spy, which she's used for her monster hunting. She has a bit of a god complex, which can often result in disastrous consequences, but you'll never have a more loyal, feral best friend if you earn her trust.
However! She does have a Hazbin AU, where she's one of Alastor's..."employees"? She's not under contract with him, but she does work for him in a sense. She's not completely a bodyguard, not completely a protege, but she's earned enough of his respect that she was one of the first he calls upon to help with the Hotel. I would love to explore this AU with her!

How is there NO crossovers between Nancy Drew and Supernatural? It would be so fucking funny! Just imagine the Winchesters rolling up to this little Maine town, ready to kick some ghost ass, and this ragtag team of twenty year olds are just like....and who are you? Get out of here before you get hurt ' and just blow away some demon or other and then groan about some random cursed board game like it's nothing. Just...imagine the Winchesters comparing bad experiences to the Drew Crew.
Family secrets/secret families? Got it. Died? Yup. A witch you trusted fucked you over and made it impossible to be with the person you love? Done it. Demons? Yup. Death curse? Done and done. Body sharing with a supernatural entity with its own agenda? Yup.
It's so perfect. Where are my crossovers at?

Aren’t you that weird proshipper who ships adult and minors ??
??????? I'm sorry, what?
No, never. I'm actually really flabbergasted right now. I can't think of a single ship I've had like that. I also am not usually in fandoms for ships so much as characters, nor did I think I would have any fandom notoriety to lend to that sort of misconception. I'm pretty staunchly against anything like that, so- am I being confused with someone else? Is there something I'm missing here?
For what it's worth the main ships I've talked about in the past are:
Dean/Castiel (Supernatural)
Zach/Alex (13 Reasons Why)
Jess/Rory (Gilmore Girls)
Tobin/Leif (Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist)
Buck/Eddie (911)
Nancy/Ace (Nancy Drew)
I started as a Glee "blog" (barely doing more than liking and reblogging) when I was a teen and it was actively airing, and even then didn't get involved with most ship stuff. I had a ship I created with my best friend from a crossover when I was 16-17 and the main couple in that was a 17, almost 18 year old, and an 18 year old, and tbh that's the only thing I've written or been involved with that even did that and it makes me a little antsy looking back and is something I would change if I went back to it. I have a bunch of ships I like from various fandoms but not a single one is between a minor and an adult. I guess I have a soft spot for Zuko/Sokka from ATLA but one of them isn't an adult while the other is a kid, at least not in anything I've looked at or what have you. Can't think of anything else even going over and over things in my head. I guess I also have a soft spot for Will/Mike in Stranger Things, but not because of anything sexual. I read a lot in Teen Wolf when I was younger, but mainly shipped, like Scott/Isaac (and Scott/Kira), so again not a minor with an adult. :/
If there IS something I'm missing or have somehow screwed up with or that's being said, though, I'd love some elaboration. I would never endorse a relationship between an adult and a minor both as a human in general and someone with PTSD stemming from grooming and SA situations. Please let me know regardless, so I can rectify whatever has gone wrong (or know that there was in fact a mixup if that's what's happening).

I saw this on a post and I completely agree: Nancy Drew doesn't need anything added to her character to make her "interesting." I think that's why HerInteractive succeeded in a Nancy Drew media reboot where movies and shows did not. She is snarky, she is intelligent, she's a bit of a klepto, and she is determined. That's enough. She doesn't need all this other stuff to make her an endearing character. In fact, the way she is is WHY she's an endearing character. That's why I wish adaptions would build off of HerInteractive's Nancy. That's why I am so upset that HerInteractive seems to be changing Nancy. Maybe it is all for the best, what they are trying to do with her character and the franchise, but it just feels like I'm losing the one "true" adaption of her character.
So I mean, go ahead. Add ghosts, add characters, add chaos. Whatever. Do what you think you need to do to "keep it interesting." No, really. I mean, that's what I'm doing.
But for God's sake. Keep true to Nancy Drew. The real one. The one I knew, and grew up with. The one I looked up to. The one I admired.
I don't know who this is directed at, but I felt it needed said.

I like to think I’m generally not a fan snob…
… But the instant I found out that the CW Nancy Drew a) made the supernatural events real, b) got rid of Ned, and c) made Nancy not Carson’s daughter… I have never checked out so quickly.

2021 Writing Recap
Tumblr media
I was initially planning on listing all the works I posted in 2021, but then I counted and realized I posted 39 stories! That's way too many. Then I had the idea of narrowing it down to a top ten but couldn't quite do that either, so
here are my top eleven personal favorite stories I wrote in 2021.
1. The Haunting of Lockwood Estates
Co-written crossover between Supernatural and Nancy Drew. It's a 70k word case fic taking place in season 3 of Supernatural. I love how this turned out and feel as if this is the best thing I've had a part in writing.
2. mercury
Post-canon Supernatual fix-it fic with POVs from every member of TFW 2.0. Sam manages to help everyone find happiness, Jack and Dean repair their relationship, and Castiel gets the ending he deserves. 11k words. 7 chapters.
3. always
18k word Destiel fic full of pining, Cas whump, and a happy ending.
4. i want u
My most popular story on ao3. It's another post-canon fix-it fic, but this one solely centers around Destiel. 2.7k words.
5. sobriety
A 2.5k word Endverse Destiel fic in endverse!Cas' POV. Pining with a happy ending.
6. substance abuse
12.9k word Destiel fic. Dean is using alcohol as a coping mechanism to deal with the aftermath of a huge fight with Sam. It also doesn't help that his feelings towards Cas are only growing. Pining and angst with a happy ending.
7. Jody Knows
1k word Destiel one-shot about Jody immediately picking up on the chemistry between Dean and Cas and saying something about it.
8. true love
Another Destiel one-shot (1.5k words), but this time a love potion is involved.
9. touchstarved
A 3.6k word Destiel one-shot about Cas kissing Dean when he's drunk, forcing Dean and Cas to confront their feelings for each other.
10. Don't Be Stupid, Friend
1k word one-shot about Cas and Balthazar's friendship in season 4.
11. summer night
300 word drabble about TFW having dinner together.

I feel like if anything Nancy Drew and Kung Fu are the mostly to have a crossover with each other. It's like supernatural/Fantasy but not a lot. Like Nancy has ghost and Nicky is part of a special bloodline.

April 2021 Picks
Tumblr media
And we’re back with the end to another month. April! Wow! Lots more great picks to talk about this time. Lots of new ones to the list too. So, let’s dive in!
Spoiler territory ahead!
Tumblr media
THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER
or should I say Captain America and the Winter Soldier
I just finished the finale last night, so it felt right to start off with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I really enjoyed it and I feel the episodes got stronger as the series went on. Each one felt like a mini-movie and I was upset it was over and had to wait another week for another one. I think the finale was my favorite. Especially the reveal of Sam as Captain America. I love his suit, his speech and the montage of everyone watching him. The last part of the episode was definitely my favorite and one I can watch on repeat. I loved seeing happy Bucky and him goofing off with the kids in Louisiana. He deserves so much happiness as he has now accepted he’s no longer who he once was. Bucky and Sam’s relationship is fantastic and I can’t wait to see it more. I know there’s a possibility of a second season and they have to be in a future MCU movie. Regarding the villain, I feel I was confused for most of the show as to what their objective was. I’m curious if this is because they had to reshoot parts during the pandemic. I also am mad with Sharon. Like what happened with her? She is definitely the true villain of the show. I also don’t love that we haven’t seen the end of Walker (but Wyatt Russell did a fantastic job). I also loved Torres and I hope he becomes the next Falcon. Definitely so different vibes from Wandavision, but just as good!
Tumblr media
THE IRREGULARS
This is a show that more people need to be talking about! It was SO GOOD! I feel like I heard some buzz about it when it first came out, but not much after. It follows the teens featured about who live on the streets during Victorian London. The leader of their group, Bea gets approached by Dr. John Watson (that’s right...as in Sherlock and Watson) to take on a case that has more supernatural qualities. The story takes off from there. I think the group dynamic was fantastic. There wasn’t a character I didn’t like and each one brought something else important to the group (which they even bring up towards the end of the show). [I’ve watched a few cast interviews since finishing the finale and they seem like they get along really well in real life too.] There is a kind of love triangle, but it didn’t bother me and was over fast. I did like both combinations though. Lots of twists and turns along the journey. I have no idea if there will be another season, but there should be. It didn’t end on a major cliffhanger, but definitely ended in a way where it could continue nicely. Come on Netflix.
Tumblr media
HBO’S THE NEVERS
From one show set in Victorian times to the next. The Nevers just premiered on HBO and HBO Max earlier this month. It follows an ensemble of characters, similar to other HBO shows, ranging from characters who are called “the touched” to men in government who are against them. Being “touched” means they have a special talent or power, which can range from healing to speaking other languages, being extremely tall, or being an expectational inventor (I seriously love Penance. I just don’t know how to explain her ability). Amalia True and Penance Adair are two of the main characters and they help bring in others who are touched to a remodeled orphanage that is a safe haven for people like them. Of course there are those who are against them existing. This seems to be at least two groups as someone is abducting and experimenting on some of the touched, but we don’t know who they are...yet. I love the fusion of a historical setting with a fantasy element. I am very excited to see where the show is headed. I also love seeing so many of my favorite British actors on the screen together.
Tumblr media
ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND
Time for a throw back. Fans of ABC’s Once Upon a Time might remember the short lived spin off following Alice in Wonderland (and some of Aladdin). It only lasted for one season of 13 episodes, but I remember loving it and I am so happy I can rewatch it on Disney Plus. It reminds me of why I enjoyed OUAT so much and I think this show deserved another season or more crossover with the original show. (Luckily the Knave got that opportunity.) I think it should have aired as a summer show or when OUAT was on hiatus, this way more fans would have tuned in. It is something I’ll believe forever.
Anyway, I’ll stop ranting now... I love Alice. I think she’s a badass and a fierce warrior. If you follow some of my posts on my other blog, Lydia-yougowith-Stiles, you’ll know that I love a warrior romance and Cyrus and Alice fit that perfectly (even if they are apart for much of the series). I also love Alice’s hair and outfits. Everything about her is cool. Her relationship with the Knave is one of my favorite friendships ever. I think they balance each other out so well and how they spend most of the journey together. Back in the day, I totally shipped them, but now I definitely don’t. (Even though I don’t love Anastasia.) This is definitely worth the watch if you’ve ever heard of Once Upon a Time or not. There is very cheesy CGI especially for 2013, but once you get pass that you’ll love it.
Tumblr media
ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST
It was on a longer break than I expected, and I didn’t miss it as much as I thought I would (which I know doesn’t sound good for a show), but I am still loving all the episodes this season. It feels like there are more musical numbers, which I love. Mandy Moore is killing it with the choreography. There are so many amazing moments. I also was a big fan of the newest glitch episode. Everyone is so talented and I also like that we’ve started to hear from more like Jenna and Tobin. Leif has become one of my favorites. I don’t love the new neighbor next door, but I think we’re done with his storyline. I’m not loving the Zoey love triangle, but I do like her with either Simon or Max. She seems really happy with Simon now. (FYI: I haven’t watched the most recent episode yet. The glitch one was my latest.) Can’t wait for more!
Tumblr media
KUNG FU
CW’s newest show this month was Kung Fu, which I just learned was a reboot. It follows Nicky who returns after 3 years to her home in San Francisco. Her family has mixed feelings as she has had no contact with them for the last 3 years. She is now a Kung Fu master and warrior, out to avenge her mentor’s death and stop a villain from acquiring mythical weapons. The show gives me Arrow vibes every time I watch it. It has similar flashbacks each episode to an earlier time in Nicky’s life. While Nicky’s mission is different, the style just gives me early seasons of Arrow vibes, which I am not complaining about. It stars Legacies’ Alyssa Chen, who I didn’t love on Legacies, but instantly fell in love with Nicky. I think she’s a bad ass character and love how she’s fighting for the underdogs on the streets of San Fran, while also taking down a bigger evil. The love triangle is heating up and I’m definitely team Henry (even though there’s some mystery there). I think he’s great and once again we have an awesome warrior romance. They balance each other so well and it’s only been like 3 episodes. Now they’ve also been sleuthing together and it’s just amazing.
Tumblr media
NANCY DREW
Are you sick of hearing me talk about CW’s Nancy Drew? I hope not because I’m going to fangirl again. I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH! I can’t wait till Wednesday comes and I tune in a little after it starts, so then I can fast forward on my DVR. Then when the episode is over I basically start it all over again and watch select scenes that were awesome. (More specifically, they tend to be Nancy and Ace scenes because I love them and we’re entering so much angst I don’t know if my heart will be able to handle it!!!)
I’ll say it a thousand times: THIS CAST IS EVERYTHING! Their dynamic is amazing. You can have any match ups and it’ll be a great time. There is not one person I don’t like. I was so upset that there wasn’t a new episode last week (especially because it was my birthday). I loved the last one with the Hardy Boys and that Nace reveal! OMG! I’m so sad that Grant has left again because we barely had him, but I feel he’ll eventually come back. He has to. I loved the ending when he spoke to Thom by signing to him. (My heart!) I seriously can’t say enough great things about this show. It is not your typical CW show and deserves more love and views. So happy a third season has already been confirmed!!
LAST NOTES
Just started Shadow and Bone on Netflix and am loving it! I’m sure I’ll have an entire post dedicated to it when I’m done. (Currently going to start episode 6.) I have no background on the universe or the books (just what my sister is filling me in with as we watch). I definitely plan on reading Six of Crows after this!
Tumblr media
So what are you enjoying? Let me know. I’m always looking for more shows to add to the list! Can never have enough.
