Legends and myths about trees
Children of the tree - Treasures of the forest
Mushrooms are known in Japanese as ‘Kinoko’ literally translated as 'children of the tree'. It just so happens to grow in forests, at the base of trees or on old fallen trees. When you come across a fresh tree cub, you will feel as if you have discovered a treasure. Quite a few people are rather particular about tree cubs in the forest.
Many animals other than people eat mushrooms. Squirrels and other animals are known to dry mushrooms on the tips of tree branches and use them as winter food. Numerous insects also eat mushrooms. Slugs and snails also often use mushrooms as food.
Mushrooms are either edible, toxic, or psychoactive. Those edible ones are rather nutritious, being rich in B vitamins, vitamin D and minerals.
Mushroom yokai monsters are traditional to the west Japan. These yokai monsters are said to be found in mountains and forests, and look like children of about three or four years of age, wearing clothes made of leaves or blue-coloured clothing. When humans see them, they look like shadows and it is not clear whether they are there or not. They are the mountain forest version of kappa (Ref).
They usually play in groups. They are often seen by loggers and people working in the mountains, and are said to be not so unusual for them. However, if they are not careful, they can play tricks on them, such as stealing their lunch boxes, and in such cases they are said to chase them away with a stick.

Note
your wind in the trees story reminded me: I live on the side of a beautiful unspoiled mountain, in a small neighborhood of people who forage and grow gardens and maintain a network of lovely little trails through the woods that carefully bend around the laurel and walk you past the stream. then a rich family bought up like 3 lots of land at the base of our mountain, and SHREDDED the forest. ripped out all the underbrush, tore down all the young/adolescent trees. only left mature oaks and pines and maples, all no less than 5 feet apart. we were all furious, and they told us their plan was to put down grass seed so it was soft, and it would be beautiful, and we were welcome to use it.
and ill admit, it looked very nice. it was pleasant to sit on soft grass under the shade, it was nice to be able to walk around easily without a trail, it looked like something out of a story book - mature trees springing fully formed from uninterrupted grassy hills.
and then a hurricane swung in from the coast and knocked down half their trees. they tried to bring in young trees from other parts of the woods, but they didn’t handle the transplant well. their remaining trees kept getting knocked down. they gave up and planted pines. so NOW, gone is our beautiful variegated mountain of different trees in different shades of green in the summer, that turned beautiful shades of orange-yellow-red in the fall, and left behind dots and streaks of evergreens in the winter, and slowly speckled back to life in the springtime. and we have this giant patch of pines that STILL continue to fall down because they’re NAKED. everyone leaves them nasty letters. please hold them in contempt for ignoring the lessons of the forest.
oh anon I am so sorry. That is a horror story, it must have been devastating to lose that beautiful forest, to complete morons who didn't understand the first about how the nature works. Picture-book landscapes are not sustainable in the high wind areas, and to think they just thought they could force it, is devastating.
I don't think it's them who are learning the lesson, they are getting very little consequences (the letters) from this. It's the animals who lose their homes, you the people, who lost your home environment, the climate that is inevitably changed with the lack of trees to hold water and control humidity, the soil that has now lost protection, nutrition, and all of its residents. Entire ecosystem is destroyed. They should be paying very costly for doing this, and doing anything like that to a forest should be illegal, even if you own the area.

I should at least be finding time to read TMNT Last Ronin’s Lost Years comics. Adulting today reminds of how I wasn’t mentally developed enough to watch Batman The Animated Series. But I still adored the late Kevin Conroy. So hearing SAINW Mikey again for a possible Last Ronin video game would have me posing as a smiling, lazy on his back, Garfield the Cat. I also hope for the additional spilling of graphic blood.😈😜😊
