Relationship status: Engaged (still weird to say it, lol)

Favourite colour: I love purples and greys, but don’t like wearing them. 

You talked about favorite lipstick colors, and my personal favorites are MACs Del Rio and Crème in Your Coffee. I also really like more mauve/pink colors but I am actually the worst when it comes to matching online swatches to my skin tone, lol. Maybe I’ll figure it out this decade. I’m also terrible at losing lipsticks so I’m very proud of myself for actually knowing where both of them are. 

Favourite food: Anything Italian, Japanese, or Indian is always good. I’m super spoiled because my MIL is a chef and she’s the best cook. Everything she makes is delicious and her love language is definitely cooking for her family. I enjoy her homemade Guatemalan food (but don’t really care for Mexican food in general outside of tamales). My guilty pleasure is elote and if I ever see an elotero man I will 100% do an illegal u-turn to go get some, lol. 

Last thing I googled: Something especially boring for work and AO3 because I have an addiction and my autofill never works on my phone. (I was marking things to read for later before I saw this.)

Time: 2:00PM PM (PST): July 12. 

Dream trip: I majored in history (my focus was on 20th century European history with a focus on World War II) so there are a lot of places I’d like to see in Europe, the US and Japan. My grandfather was a WWII veteran and was stationed at the RAF Bury St. Edmund’s and I’d love to see it. My cousin went pre-pandemic and the air base treated them really lovely and let them tour even though it was closed at the time. I’d like to see Germany, I’d like to see Auschwitz (and cry), Hiroshima and the Arizona. My grandfather was a prisoner of war in Austria and while the site no longer exists, it’d be interesting to see the place where his B-17 was shot down and get an idea of where his internment camp (Stalag 17) was. Outside of a veritable history tour, I’d really like to go to Scotland. I’d also like to go back to the East Coast because I have so many friends there that COVID interrupted me from seeing in person.

if you have a problem with gale's beard looking mossy in the game (which is a known bug since at least patch 3 or 4), you can do the following to resolve it:

go to your nvidia control panel or your graphic card equivalent

go to manage 3d settings

set the anisotropic filtering to x16

Unchanging Things

Maybe things weren’t supposed to stay the same.

As much as we felt like we were the destination. In life we have to accept that sometimes we are just a pit stop, a rest house, or maybe just that stranger that stopped a while for a small talk.

The people we want to stay will not always be there. What will remain are the memories: lots of good, lots of weird, lots of sad and unpleasant ones. And that’s how the story goes, doesn’t it? The people in our lives were once all strangers. They’re there now because we let them stay. Sadly, one day they won’t be here because we either chose to let them go or they chose they didn’t want to stay.

The parting of two people is a story told many times now. It’s not something new, nor are the emotions associated with them. But just as how history repeats its downfall, the stories with an unavoidable climax, it will still ache. The feeling of betrayal and longing will make us go mad in thought. And why wouldn’t we be hurt? We were once their first but now they can’t even bear to look at us in the eyes.

Yet to us they’re still our number one. Just like how the algorithm in all our social networks put their names first, it’s also them that comes first to our mind. How sad that they don’t even know that. But after the pain, we’ll begin to realize that perhaps, a day without you might actually be better than a day of seeing you not want me. That breaks me, compromising my words and my pen in writing something other than your beauty. Then did I know that maybe this is better.

Then, finally we let go. We finally accept that we were not a person meant to stay in their lives for long, that we are just the strangers that listened to their stories and gave our opinions. My own words. But a residency wasn’t meant to be given. We finally take our stand, look them once more longingly, and turn our back to walk.

Yes, we have to walk. We have to move. To keep moving and find the right people that we want to give residency to our lives. The people who will choose the same, the unchanging ones who will choose us every single day. But what if we meet another stranger? Or worse, what if a stranger returns?

Well, I hope by then we’ve grown. We’ve learned and we’ve earned. Who knows, maybe this time they’ll be able to fill in the vacancy left in our hearts. But until then, you, me, let’s get through this every day. Let’s be the best strangers for our future residents.

i think it's totally possible for anyone to embody his essence. you can even manage to rock something directly inspired by columbo without looking like you're cosplaying.

hair

if you have columbo's hair type, it's actually pretty easy to emulate his styles. i even know people who show pictures of columbo to hair stylists to get his look. my partner's hair in its natural state is very similar to columbo's--dark, wavy, tending to grow in spite of gravity rather than with it. whenever he gets his hair cut, he shows the stylist photos of late 60s/pilot episode peter falk, whose look is actually pretty on-trend for the current era. it works out pretty well.

your swag may have aged well pilot columbo but you can't beat floof

failing that, getting any haircut that is natural, low-maintenance, and not too attention-grabbing captures the visual language all the same. for reference, natasha lyonne in poker face has her hair in natural-looking, messy waves that to me just exude columbo.

how you present yourself to the world is up to you, but if you want to invoke columbo, there's a lot more you can do than buy a tan raincoat.

in an era of sharply-cut, wide-lapelled constructions, fat tie tuesdays, and gucci loafers, columbo stands out as classic comfort personified.

his collar, tie, and lapels are slim, proportional, and unassuming; they'd look good in almost any era. his pants fit closely to his leg but not too wide or slim, and sit at or near the natural waist. though his suits, shirts, ties, shoes, socks, and even coats rotate, there is a consistent color palette keeping him "on model". he embraces earth tones: creams, forest greens, light browns, dark browns, stony grays, rusts, and roses. his clothing seems like an afterthought, but it's an extension of his personality--rumpled and unassuming at first, yet sharp and deliberate upon further inspection.

amid the 1970s explosion of synthetic popularity, it says something that every stitch of textile on columbo's person is natural (aside from the raincoat, which is probably nylon or poly--he wears it without a lining and uses it as essentially an oversized windbreaker). his boots are leather with crepe latex soles; his tie is silk. his shirt is cotton, a bit boxy but comfortable and properly fitted. because the construction of his suits is roomy and unstructured, and because they're made of linen, they wrinkle easily.

this is easily confused for appearing slovenly. actually, all things considered, his clothes fit him pretty damn well, it's just hard to avoid wrinkling natural fibers like linen and cotton, especially in hot weather. he's running around los angeles sweating up a storm, the man needs loose, breathable fabric.

point is, columbo dresses very thoughtfully. since these clothes are workwear for him and he works a hell of a lot, it's imperative that he factors in the weather, his comfort, and proper fit when picking clothes. he wants to like and be comfortable in them while looking unassuming. so even though he sometimes ends up looking like an unmade bed, his choices are deliberate.

you could invoke these principles in your own appearance by picking earthy colors/jewel tones and comfortable, natural fabrics that you enjoy wearing, which has the added benefit of being better for you and the environment. consider also taking a few garments in to be altered. it's usually not that expensive, supports your local needlefolk, and makes even cheap clothes fit great.

as a last little aside, i think having a "signature" clothing item akin to columbo's raincoat would be a nice touch. a jacket, a pair of shoes, even a watch or necklace. something you always wear. if you really do want a raincoat like his, just make sure you're not buying a trench coat, because, repeat after me: columbo does not wear a trench coat.

It's normal to feel jealous. In friendships, relationships, whatever. Jealousy is a very normal, very human emotion and most likely, it's telling you that a need of yours isn't being met. But sometimes jealousy just shows up randomly and makes itself known for no reason. Maybe you have the happiest relationship possible and you still get jealous. Maybe all of your needs, and more, are being met. That's okay.

Never be ashamed of jealousy. Never be ashamed of anger or sadness or fear. These emotions are not “bad”, there is no such thing as bad emotions. You cannot be completely free of them, and they do not inherently mean you or the other person(s) is abusive.

Listen to what your mind is telling you. If you're jealous every single time your friend hangs out with someone that's not you; why? Are you scared of your friend liking the person more than you? Are you scared that you're not worthy of your friend's time and energy? Are you scared that maybe the other person secretly hates you and plans to turn your friend against you?

Whatever it is, its okay. Don't listen to people telling you that “non-abusers don't get jealous”. Because they do. It's just about how they handle the jealousy. If you listen to your body and figure out the underlying fear or insecurity, you're already doing way more than most.

Sometimes you can talk to your friend about that fear. Sometimes you can explain to them that you feel afraid when they hang out with other people because you're insecure. Do not ever make it out to be their problem, like something they should fix. They can understand and do their best to help you, but do not ever demand or even let them drop these friends for you. Unless the friends are genuinely awful people (which you should then have an entirely different conversation about), it is your friend's right to keep them as friends.

But maybe you can come to a compromise. Maybe when your friend is done hanging out with someone, they can tell you about what they did. Maybe instead of an obligation, its like a “oh my god I had so much fun and I want to tell someone about it” thing. They get to talk about how much fun they had to someone that cares, and you get to know that these other people didn't try to turn your friend against you, or whatever your fear may have been.

Anyway, my overall point is; jealousy is okay and normal. It usually covers some sort of insecurity or fear, like how anger can cover sadness or hurt. It doesn't matter how often you feel jealous - I'm a very very jealous person but I have coping mechanisms and ways to help me when I get jealous so that I don't hurt the person I'm jealous of. I will always suggest mental health assistance like therapy or medication if it's available, but sometimes, its more about the way you treat your feelings and the communication you have with your friends.

I'm actually begging thin people to make fat characters. You have so much power to normalize fatness by simply not making every one of your OCs thin (whether it's thin and dainty or thin and muscular).

More specifically, I want to see characters who are fat and are quick and quiet and have high dexterity. Characters who are large and burly and something other than a brute-force melee class. Make fat elves and nymphs and succubi, not just dwarves and orcs. Make fat characters with complex personalities. Don't have every fat woman 'make up for it' by having an extreme hourglass figure. Make fat characters who are desirable and loved.

But also, on a related note: please make characters who love to eat well, regardless of their size, and do not make it into a joke or a goofy trait. Make characters who go on long traveling quests and don't magically lose weight from all the walking, because not all bodies work like that. Make characters gain weight as a sign that they are physically or emotionally healing. Don't have every character refuse to eat as a tell when they are upset. Don't be afraid to have characters enjoy food. Please.
