First of, if you absolutely massacre the main character's personality this book is totally kusbosai. Like just look at these:

does plaithus require their citizens to do military service?

Military service is not a requirement, per se, but the military is absolutely glamorized. To the lower class, the military is sold as an opportunity for a more "stable" lifestyle while simultaneously serving one's country. Most children in the lower class are essentially groomed by public education into idolizing the military, and orphanages really push the agenda that the children should go into the military as it's the best place they can find camaraderie and family. You could honestly view most public schools + orphanages as a sort of military school to begin with, to be honest. And while the children aren't forced to join the military once they graduate, I would say it's definitely been implanted in their heads to join.

With the nobility + upperclass, the military is still pushed as being something honorable. But it's sort of fetishized, in a sense. For example, a lot of them sexualize certain militia figures because they represent power, strength, "honor," and resiliency, all things Plaithus really emphasizes as being attractive and important traits. Most upper-class citizens will still try and join the military because of this, but will often serve in officer positions and will likely never see real combat, even if they are trained in it.

So no, service is not required, but the military is such an intrinsic part of the national identity of Plaithus that mostly everyone you meet will know someone directly serving in the military to one extent or another.

There's also sharp divides on mentality of the military within the military, as only certain groups have ever truly served on the frontlines. MC + Syfyn's experience of the military as young adults is absolutely a different experience than middle-class recruits, or a noble's son.

Me: What if MC has a crush on Derek in Step 2 and then he makes the marriage pact, and MC asks him if he likes them and he plays it off because he's so nervous, so MC thinks that he really just doesn't like them like that so by the time Step 3 comes along they're ready to date Baxter, then he leaves and then in Step 4 Derek confesses that he actually really did like MC the whole time but then like a few weeks later they meet back up with Baxter for Jude and Scott's wedding. Okay so I've been reading a lot of anti reverse harem fics undertale but like what if it was twisted wonderland instead. Like there was a magicless student before yuu (in their 3 or 2 year) and yuu moves into ramshakle with them. But unlike other reverse harem fics I read the other human isn't a two face bitch. Like they true to help yuu settle in make there transitions a bit easer. But it's the boys that don't like yuu ( not the first year's ofc). Like it's the older boys that make yuu time at NRC hard. Not cartoonishly bulliying, but like ignoring yuu or doing things that inconvenience them.

step 1 personality: "child of the flowers"

cheerful and bubbly, many people that know her describe her as a bundle of joy. she likes to tease the people around her and is shown to be a lot more perceptive than people expect her to be, many assume she is gullible due to her natural innocent expression. can be shy around adults that aren't her mommy and she can be very clumsy, bandaids appearing on her from time to time. she loves to draw and paint, as well as bake (with parental supervision ofc) she loves strawberries, flowers and many other things described as cute. she likes to explore and look for shiny or attractive things she finds outside and stores it in a box full of 'treasures'. She owns a teddy bear named Mimi who is her best friend.

fun fact: she is not afraid of any bugs, she brought a centipede home and tried to keep it as a pet but it died which made her really sad 😭

step 2 personality: "maiden of the clouds"

has become a lot more toned down but still friendly to the people around her despite being described as closed off from time to time and not having any proper friends besides her neighbours, qiu and tamarack. to qiu and tamarack, she's the same except the playful teasing has been turned up a notch, though she's very supportive of them (listens to qiu about their problems, attending tamarack's cello recitals) she started to become interested in activities related to her appearance (e.g. painting her nails, wearing a necklace, flower clip) and is seen from time to time to have stylish outfits and hairstyles of many different kinds. she becomes quite admired by her peers for this despite her being oblivious to it; she normally hangs around by herself which adds to her mystique. her hobbies remain the same with the addition of skateboarding which is her main mode of transportation and taking long naps. the problem she faces is the inability to share her feelings with other people and bottling up her emotions, even to the point that qiu and tamarack worry for her due to a past experience in elementary where her 'friends' actively bullied and made fun of her to the point that it damaged her mental state and her fear of confrontation didn't help whatsoever. those friends only wanted to be her friend to get to qiu. when they found out years later, they felt extremely horrible but she never put it against them. her trust issues and inability to express herself makes her seem disingenuine which causes her to lose a lot of friends. her main way to resolve conflict is to just run (in this case, skate) away and avoid everything. the necklace she wears was a gift from her mother. she's very comfortable in her gender identity, normally dressing up in both masc and fem fashion and has supported qiu in their gender crisis. meanwhile, she actively helps tamarack gain confidence in herself.

fun fact: her first crush was baxter (probably because of the similar ways they resolve conflict LMAOOO) she blasted chasing pavements in her room while sobbing after he graduated highschool

step 3 personality: "lady of the vogue"

fun fact: many of her family members say that she's starting to resemble her mother in her teens, which she can agree with.

planning to pursue her dream of starting her own fashion brand, cheyenne has come a long way with her battle with the fashion industry and insignificance as a whole. she still takes good care of her appearance, becoming an influencer and running a blog that showcases her daily looks and fits. she now rarely has issues with expressing herself due to the support of the people around her. she always looks out for the people around her, gaining the title of the mom friend which is a funny pair with tamarack being the 'grandma friend'. her younger self (specifically step 2) avoided striking colours like red due to not wanting to stand out (which is contradictory bc ms girl walks into class with a brand new fit every time), but her step 3 self has fully embraced the bright red that she used to proudly wear as a young child. she's become quite popular amongst her peers after realizing that she could trust other people and lives her life not caring about what other people thought. also she's madly in love with qiu but you didn't hear that from me

For any horror fans out there that haven't read it yet: The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher is SO GOOD. I don't remember ever being so scared by a book

#the hollow places is also very good but it made me feel more like... fascinated than scared #the twisted ones actually has me like... i cant read it alone at night bc i get too spooked lol. i have to read it in bed next to my gf #and then i STILL get spooked. i spent all of last night in between dreams Scared Of Monsters Getting Me #until i woke up this morning and realized wait a second... that was in the book not real life #i am. so pleased by this. it is SO hard for me to find content that actually scares me anymore #and i love the authors voice too. the characters in each book have their own unique voices and both books have way different vibes #but even with that theres still some sort of just... essence that the author brings thats very present in both books and i really enjoy it #would definitely recommend both of them and i will DEFINITELY be checking out more of her books #rambling #edit: im looking at a list of her other books and two of them have a nonbinary mc?? hell yeah!!! #ive never seen a nonbinary person just casually represented in a non-lgbt focused novel. ESPECIALLY not as the protagonist in a horror #t kingfisher I LOVE YOU
