And here we are with the final full decade featured on this blog. All throughout the 2010's retrospectives, we have been focusing a lot on how streaming and internet culture in general is shaping pop music. Now, that can be seen more than ever. Especially with the number one song this year, Lil Nas X's Old Town Road -- one of the first viral TikTok songs we'll be seeing. Old Town Road isn't just notable for how it took off through meme culture or how TikTok would soon come to be one of the main forces behind pop success, but the track was also controversial for how it blurred the lines between genres. Not through aesthetic or sound (which is nothing new), but through marketing. After reaching number nineteen on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, the magazine disqualified the song from counting as the genre. It should be mentioned that country circles have a history of drawing clear lines around what counts as their genre. There was a time when many country music tastemakers considered artists like Johnny Cash or John Denver to be too rock or pop for country. In fact during the 1975 CMAs, Charlie Rich burned John Denver's card after announcing him as the winner. And if it even needs to be said, this tension is even more noticeable when you factor race into the mix. Especially when you factor in how country being classified as a "white" genre was a marketing strategy less than a hundred years ago. Here's an article that went more in depth on the issue in response to the Old Town Road debate.

“Determining which chart a song lives on is an ongoing process that depends on a number of factors, most notably the song’s musical composition, but also how the song is marketed and promoted, the musical history of the artist, airplay the song receives, and how the song is platformed on streaming services.” - a representative from Billboard for Rolling Stone

Obviously, this is a lot of discourse and debate to drop onto a short TikTok meme song. But since this blog is essentially about how music is marketed, I couldn't not bring it up. Because Old Town Road wasn't controversial just because it was a song that used both country and rap influences (country had been incorporating more hip-hop production into their sound all decade), but it was largely controversial because Lil Nas X wasn't a country artist. This is a concept I touched on briefly during the rise of nu metal, but the definition of a genre can change depending on whether you're evaluating the sound as music or as marketing. And if you're in the world of marketing, the definition of "country music" is "music performed by country artists within the country music industry". But with the internet making it more possible than ever for people outside the industry to gain pop success, the lines are allowed to become even more blurred.

Unlike the start of the decade, the pop music now is much more low-key and moody. The popularity of trap lends well to a darker sound, and even pop tracks like Billie Eilish's Bad Guy and Ariana Grande's 7 Rings are taking influence from this production style. Lo-fi music and "bedroom pop" are now becoming the go-to sound. More production styles that encourage more individual, introspective listening. Music that sounds like it could have been produced by one person in their bedroom. And maybe the timing was just right. Because soon, most people would have to make their music out of their bedrooms.

The Robins Band AU Lore that nobody asked for

I'm writing a DC Band AU with the Robins and a couple of OCs. Here's lore that I created instead of actually writing.

Wayne Recording Studios was built after Bruce Wayne retired as Batman (DJ or singer idk)

Dick is lead singer

Jason is electric guitar

Tim is bass/keyboard (since he's good with technology he figured out a way to get his keyboard to repeat chords while he plays bass and can also change/add chords into the mix)

Damian is drummer

At one point, they [The Robins] broke up and went solo, though that didn’t last very long

The boys went under their respective superhero names

Dick - Nightwing

Jason Todd because a masked DJ called Red Hood (like Marshmello or Daft Punk) it wasn’t until after they reunited that he announced he was Red Hood

Tim Drake went solo and simple, though he rebranded a few times: Red Robin and Drake. They say his failed solo career was one reason for a reunion. He used a lot of launch pads as well as his repeating chord technique.

Damian actually wasn’t around when they split

Cass joined at some point, coming on as their sound mixer under the name of Black Bat

Broke away and started her own thing under Orphan

Steph started a band, which Cass is apart of, called Spoiler Alert

Babs is stage manager/tech director ofc, though back in the day, she started out with the name Batgirl under the Wayne Recording Studios but went solo for a bit as Oracle.

Duke is new and helps Babs out with stage managing. He guest plays with the Robins as a DJ. Often MCs for shows. Just getting the feel for the music world

We're thrilled about the response we got last month - so let's continue our newest fluff event 🥳

❄️ Each month of 2023, you will get a new bingo board which will have the following mix of prompts:

the month itself, which you can either use as an actual prompt or as your typical "free space" on bingo boards

two prompts (more or less) related to the month/time of year

and two general prompts

❄️ New: Whenever we prompt a line from a song, you can either use it as such or you can simply listen to the song and let it inspire you for your creation. This month's song is Silence by Marshmello ft. Khalid

❄️ You can fill as many or as few squares as you want - and you can also fill one creation with multiple or even all prompts!

❄️ Since this is a year-long event (with the exception of Flufftober itself, of course), reblogging will not happen daily! It will happen the first three days of the month and then every weekend. Note, this might change over the course of the year, depending on how this event will go...

I think they will pursue you. Or at the very least they feel a strong want for you 🤭. Although they are hot and cold with it. Sometimes they really want to take action but then other times they may feel some resistance. Originally from outside people or those around them but eventually It could get to them internally and they'd hate to admit it. But I think despite the opinions of others, it's not a big distraction for long for them and they will keep taking steps 😤. They will shake it off and stay focused in time. Their efforts can be presented in a smooth cautious way tho. they don't want to offend you or scare you 😳 (I kept getting mixed up with this and the next pile so there maybe some connections between the two for both groups/their intentions will evolve into the next pile)

yes and they wanna do it in a sweet way---they may plan it out And make sure everything is to your liking before they approach you! I'm trying to pick up more but I feel like it's that simple 😭 they aren't overwhelmed in a negative way. Sure they have a lot of plans or motives but they are secure. Pretty much, they haven't really got it all figured out yet. But they have a feeling that their intentions is something they wanna pursue so they are watching you and looking for an opening to act 😅. I get this frustrates you though but be patient! Good things come to those who wait!
