For non-Australians, may I introduce you to the annual “Hottest 100”.
Let me paint you a picture. Yearly in January, Australians far and wide gather around their BBQ’s and pools, they fry up meats of some kind and drink an assortment of cold beverages, comment how f*ćkįng hot it is and how wild the weather has been (we have had two cyclones already this year). Many a wild weekend was the Hottest 100 weekend. Radios on full volume, ads for national tiles and car insurance, everyone waiting for the radio station ‘triple J’ (known for its alternative music choices and supportive local and indigenous industries) and listening for the countdown of the past years top 100 songs. These songs are voted by listeners and the general public over the past few months. Top 10 are highly debated and highly anticipated. There are many journalists who’s entire careers are built of predicting the hottest 100. Previous years have caused many a drama. This year, was controversial and made history.
This year, the top song of the past year, as voted by the Australian public, was a Wiggles cover.
Yes, the 1991 turtleneck-wearing children’s band that teaches children how to make fruit salad and how to wash their hands, has taken out top song in Australia for 2021.
First ever Wiggles song in the Hottest 100. And it’s a cover of “Elephant". It’s is a song by Australian psychedelic rock band Tame Impala,
The original author, Parker, said that his favourite Lonerism lyric is from Elephant: "He pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac / 'Cause he doesn't like it looking like he looks back".
So as the Australian proverb goes,
“We aren’t here to f*čk spiders, we’re here to relive our childhoods through psychedelic rock covers.”
