❝ IMPOSTER ❞

SATURDAY — SEPTEMBER 12 — 8:56PM

THE WORLD WAS MOVING WITHOUT BENTLEY, AND IT WAS THE MOST TERRIFYING THING HE’D EVER EXPERIENCED.

He couldn’t move. He was pinned to the debris by the massive shard of metal that was protruding from his chest, and all of his pain meshed into one strange feeling of numbness. The only thought that was bouncing around in his head was the last statement he heard from Jason.

That Asten wasn’t breathing.

Asten wasn’t breathing.

Asten couldn’t be dead. He couldn’t. That wasn’t how this was supposed to end. None of this was supposed to end like this. The world could go on without Bentley Whittaker. Everything would be fine without Bentley Whittaker. But how could the earth keep spinning without Asten Evans?

He guessed he should’ve expected it. Nothing he does ever goes right. Only this time it went so, so wrong. Death wrong.

(Was Asten dead because of him?)

There was no one around him. No one that knew where he was except maybe Nico, who was unconscious. All he could really see were the tall buildings and night’s sky over his head, the end of the metal sticking out of him. He couldn’t lift his head, couldn’t really move.

He twitched his fingers on his right hand, which caused a jolt of pain that ran through his entire body and made him whine.

Was there a point in calling for help if he already knew he was going to die?

His eyes began to water at the half-realization that he was literally living out his last moments alone in a pile of rubble. The thought helped him force his hand up a little more, up toward his pounding head. His muscles were trembling from the effort, and it hurt so bad to move anything… but he didn’t want to die. He didn’t. (But he was going to, he knew. What was one last streak of denial?)

He clicked his earpiece on, and was greeted by a low, constant, staticky hum.

“Help,” He muttered, his voice coming out strangely hoarse and soft. “Help.”

The static continued, melding with the low sounds of the remaining crackling fire and shifting rubble.

“I’m… dying,”

Static.

Bentley’s stinging eyes spilled over down his face, but he couldn’t really cry, it hurt too bad — all he could do was let his eyes water. “Help me. Please. Please, help me.”

Nothing.

“I don’t… I don’t… I don’t want to die,” He muttered, sniffling lightly, staring at the sky. “I don’t want to die alone.”

Silence.

“Batman,” He tried, wincing when he sobbed a few times anyways. “B, please. I-I don’t want to die by myself. Please.”

The only response he got was a shift in the rubble beneath him, and the twinkle of the stars above him.

He coughed, which sent a ripping pain through his whole body that made him cry out in agony — and now there was blood on his face. Had he coughed up blood?

“Bruce... Bruce, please. Please. I-I want to go home,”

The static in the earpiece didn’t budge.

Bentley was going to die here, and alone.

He would’ve wiped the tears off of his face, but even the thought of moving produced agony, so he didn’t. “Bruce, please. Please, please, please… Dad, please.”

Silence.

(How was he supposed to come to terms with dying? How did people do this? How did Jason…? Damian?)

There was an oddly familiar whooshing sound, and Bentley could’ve swore he heard feet hit the ground not too far from him. If he had the willpower to move his head, he might’ve tried to look at whoever was there to mock him.

Not a second later came a shrill: “Oh my God! Oh my God no way! I did it!”

The voice wasn’t one he knew, but it wasn’t not one he knew. It was a guy’s, and he didn’t recognize it. (But he kind of did?)

“Screw you, space-time! Barry’s gonna lose his mind when I tell him-“ There was a pause. “Oh, shit, right.”

There were footsteps that came oddly close to Bentley, but he only saw the figure they belonged to when it was practically looming over his head. It was a tall guy -- maybe Jason’s age, maybe Tim’s -- in a bright yellow, white, and red jumpsuit. The majority of it was yellow, with red and white stripes on the arms and legs, accentuating a large white lightning bolt in the center of the chest. The suit went all the way up to his head and stopped, sort of like Tim’s cowl but with the top cut out so his hair was showing. He also had a utility belt around his waist, with only one small, yellow pouch on it.

This guy looked just like Nico.

Okay, so, yeah, Bentley was dying and probably hallucinating, but this guy had Nico’s eyes that looked so much like Dick’s. Not to mention that he had the same exact dirty-blonde mop on his head, dangling over the edges of the suit.

Bentley really was losing his mind.

“Hey… Hey there, bud,” The Adult Nico Imposter said, kneeling down next to him, his hands hovering unsurely over Bentley’s wound. His blue eyes very quickly turned misty and watery, getting bluer in that weird way only Dick’s and Nico’s did when they cried. “I never saw...”

Bentley’s half-hearted response was a soft, simple: “Huh?”

The Adult Nico Imposter rubbed his hand over his hair, exhaling heavily. “Okay. Okay. Hi. Hi, Bentley, uh, it’s me… Nico, but, uh… not yours. I’m Nico from the future, and I’ve just broken the space-time continuum to be here. So, here I am. God, great job explaining, you idiot,” He muttered to himself, his eyes still blown wide and staring at Bentley’s abdomen. “In the timestream I came from, you died tonight, and now I’m here to make sure you don’t, uh, like Barry did for me. But, uh, I’m not taking you to a new universe, just… yeah. Anyways. Can I pick you up?”

Bentley blinked. He was literally losing his mind.

Since speaking to a hallucination couldn’t really hurt anything, and he didn’t want to die alone (even if his company was blood-loss-generated), he nodded as much as he could force himself to.

With a nod and a deep breath, the Nico Imposter opened the little pouch on his belt and pulled an inhaler out, shaking it and puffing on it a few times with that telltale rattle-rattle-hiss-hiss.

And it was strange, because everything, down to the material of this guy’s suit to the pain caused by movement of the metal piece, Future Nico picking him up felt really… real.

“You’re… from… the future?” Bentley muttered, watching the buildings and stars move above him. Future Nico was really warm, and it felt nice. (Was it even real?)

“Yeah. But saving you is about to make a new one. I’ll have to go back to mine when I’m done here,” He explained lightly, sitting Bentley in his grasp, cupping his head with one hand.

Bentley hummed. “Did Asten live?”

There was a moment of silence. Future Nico’s gaze fell to the ground, his eyes going distant for a moment.

“No. It was just me,” He replied, shaking his head. “I’m about to run. It might feel weird.”

Bentley said nothing, but closed his eyes and waited. Going super fast couldn’t feel much weirder than being impaled and then picked up by a guy from the future, could it? He was pretty sure his life had reached the maximum amount of weird. Either that or his hallucinations had?

There was a split second (or three) where Bentley couldn’t breathe, and it was really cold. It felt kind of like he was pinned down for a moment, like his whole body stopped moving and then started again.

When he opened his eyes, he was in a medical bed in the Batcave.

The only explanation Future Nico gave was a stammery: “Sorry, Mr. Pennyworth… yeah, hi, um… I’m Nico, but from the future, and I brought Bentley here so he can… Y’know! I… I’ve gotta run, I’ll be right back!”

There was a flash and a gust of wind, and the Future Nico was gone.

Bentley was surely losing his mind.

He was in the cave. (But was he really, if he was just hallucinating?) Barbara was now at the computer, and Bentley very vaguely saw Alfred toss an earpiece to her and abandon his spot at the massive screens to run into the medbay toward him.

“Oh, my dear boy…”

Bentley opened his mouth, but nothing came out. Alfred seemed so real. He touched Bentley’s arm and it felt real. He sounded real. There was no way he… that Future Nico was…?

Maybe Bentley really wouldn’t die?

(There surfaced that unhinged, deep, unmistakable hope and determination again that Bentley Whittaker was so famous for.)

Maybe he really wouldn’t die.

Okay. So the worst part about the entire situation at hand actually wasn’t that Bentley had a giant piece of metal protruding from his chest.

It was the fact that Alfred couldn’t get him unconscious enough to start surgery.

He typically had the opposite problem — his body seemed to love passing out at every opportunity, even at the worst times. But right now, Alfred had already administered nearly twice the typical amount of sedatives recommended. And while Bentley was pretty loopy, he just wasn’t going out of it. He’d had two small injections, and was now rocking an oxygen mask with an anesthetic pumping through it constantly to get him in a state where Alfred could help. And it still wasn’t working.

But, even worse than that, was the fact that he had to see Asten.

It wasn’t long (probably three minutes after Bentley arrived) before Future Nico (who had to actually exist because Alfred was talking to him?) zoomed back into view and laid Asten on the bed next to Bentley.

He was limp, and already extremely pale. Bentley wasn’t lucid enough to focus on whether his chest was rising or falling, but he didn’t guess it was, since Jason said it wasn’t. Asten looked… strange. Different from unconscious or sleeping. It was colder. Stranger.

Maybe three minutes (and more sedative) later, Future Nico swooshed back into the cave with Current Nico, who was still unconscious and bleeding at the nose, and put him on the other side of Bentley. But Future Nico was very persistent about Alfred not worrying about him, that he ended up being okay even in his own reality where no one came to his aid.

That was about the time the Batmobile came squealing into the cave, followed by bike after bike with different Wayne’s on them each time. After that, the cave turned into a mess of shouting and yelling and panicking and loud noises and chaos and Bentley still couldn't go to sleep. He couldn’t really comprehend what was going on, but he was awake, which was too awake for the operations he needed.

He didn’t really know what to focus on (or if he could focus) until Nightwing came into his view, over his head, peeling his domino mask off. He was crying — hard. Bentley couldn’t really talk through the oxygen mask (not that he could talk anyways.) but he was able to twitch his fingers and get Dick to grab his hand.

“You’re going to be okay, Babybird. You’re going to be just fine,”

A beat passed.

“I love you,”

Bentley felt a pinch on his arm, likely meaning someone had injected him with something else.

He couldn’t seem to create any coherent thoughts. He liked that Dick was holding his hand. He was glad to be home, even if he died. At least he wasn’t dying alone.

He opened his mouth in an attempt to speak, but coughed instead, and the inside of his oxygen mask got splattered with something dangerously red.

Seeing that color seemed to spark a wave of panic, and he blinked away a new wave of tears that threatened to come.

“…Dad,” He managed to just barely rasp, coughing again, splattering more red on the mask. “Dad.”

Dick said something, he didn’t really hear it. Someone else said something.

He managed to turn his head just far enough to see someone (he couldn’t tell who) put a defibrillator on Asten’s chest, and with a loud bang! he convulsed terrifyingly.

After a moment, someone turned Bentley’s head away. Bruce’s face appeared in the empty space in his vision.

“Everything’s going to be okay, chum,” He said, putting on that same stupid reassuring smile that he loved to plaster on and keep there with his life, even in the worst situations. He touched Bentley’s forehead like he always did.

“You’re going to be okay. Just breathe. Rest,”

Bentley wasn’t going to die alone.

Bruce kept brushing his hair back, smiling all the while, and for the first time since he’d been home, Bentley relaxed enough to let the sedatives take him under.

The moment Kyojuro told you about the Mugen Train mission, you got a terrible feeling. A horrible, twisting feeling that made you absolutely sick.

You told him as such, and he took it seriously, telling you he promised to come back if he could.

“If you can isn’t good enough!” You cry, almost choking on your words as Kyojuro pulls his haori onto his broad shoulders. He offers you a solemn smile, and you feel tears burn behind your eyes like fire as he slides his katana into his belt.

“I can’t promise I’ll come back. I never can. This is a dangerous profession. You know that.” He says seriously, and you grab ahold of the edge of his haori as he turns to leave.

He can’t leave.

What if he dies?

It slips off his shoulders, and he turns, catching the fabric as he frowns.

“What’s wrong? You’re never like this.” He asks, and you feel your lips quiver. Your voice trembles when you speak next,

“I have a dreadful feeling. Like something bad is going to happen. What if you don’t come back?” You whisper, and he reaches forward to cradle your hand in his. His palms are rough from years of using a sword and hard work.

But you love his hands. They’re strong but kind hands. Hands that have saved countless lives, including your own. You weren’t a demon slayer. Kyojuro always said you were too kind, too gentle, to kill demons. You had tried, and that was how you met.

So you knew how dangerous this job was. And that just made your gut feeling worse.

“I can’t abandon these people based on a feeling, my love. If I don’t come back, then I don’t come back. But if I die, I want you to know I love you, I will forever, and I will try by best to come back to you.” He tries, but you shake your head, tears welling up and dripping down your cheeks.

“I’d rather die than live alone without you—”

“Don’t you dare say that.” He cuts you off sternly. His eyes are serious and dark, as if that thought of you dying was going to kill him. But you push on as if he hadn’t cut you off.

“I want you to know that if you are going to die, I expect you to find a way ‘round it!” You sob. His grip tightens on your hand, but it’s still gentle, like a feather-light kiss. Like sunshine peeking over the horizon.

“Not everything can be avoided. Not forever. You know this. Demon slayers must die sometime, and if I die in the line of duty, I want you to be proud of me.” He says, pulling you close. You fist your fingers in the fabric of his haori again and press your face into it. He presses a kiss to your forehead.

“But you’re you. There’s always a loophole! You wait until the last minute, and then you make it out alive!” You are almost weeping at this point, your voice muffled by the fabric.

“Every night is the last night for someone. Sometimes it can’t be avoided. But know I am going to come back to you if I can.” He says softly.

If he can?

It was like he was expecting to die.

Was he?

Did he have the same terrible feeling as you?

“But you will! You’ll wait until there’s no hope! All will be lost, and then you’ll smile and then save the day! You always do!” You clench your teeth until your jaw hurts in an attempt to quell your tears. Kyojuro shakes his head, burying his nose in your hair.

“No, I don’t. Not always. Times end, love, because they have to.” He says finally and pulls away, leaning in to kiss you.

You kiss him desperately. Holding him to you as if that would convince him not to leave.

But he does anyway, a smile on his face and his hand waving goodbye.

So he leaves.

And never comes back.

anyway fic concept I'm pulling and stretching like candy in my brain rn: what if amara pulled cas' grace out as a "gift" to dean instead of resurrecting mary and it was so awfulhorrendousbad for everyone involved.

like cas does not want to be human but there's nothing he can do and also he just has to live in this state knowing full well that it was something done to him (again) for the sake of someone else (again) and the person his body is supposed to serve is like. he's not even interested in it! he's not even caring and apologetic about it! because dean wouldn't be.

the problem with Dean is that he's extremely self-indulgent when he's experiencing pain which means that even when hes dying of guilt he'll turn it into a pity party and explode with anger and frustration instead of. like. putting the needs of the people he's feeling guilty about having hurt first. and he never expects absolution but he craves it deep within and he's also. like. so afraid of it. like he wants to be forgiven for things but he cannot handle the tenderness that comes with forgiveness i think so he must like. act unforgivable. or something. idk I'm just. thinking out loud.

anyway. yes. so when this happens dean's just so goddamn hurt that he can't do anything to help cas get his wings back + that cas is. like. in this state because Amara wanted to do something for him so this is simply the most blatant and warped manifestation of his desire to be. like. with cas. which. at that point i think he's still battling with that intensely and he doesn't like what he's seeing. i think he only becomes okay with it post widower arc in s13 because the vaccum cas left behind was like. too large. and if it was a choice between being okay with being gay for the angel and not having the angel at all, it's an easy choice. like that's my interpretation. but anyway. i digress.

so. dean's just incapable of even confronting cas head-on beyond, idk, just bringing him back to the bunker and making sure he's not dead (bmol plot is not happening in this fic bc i am. not someone with that much talent lmao). he avoids him and leaves sam to take care of cas and sam is like. bad at it. he is horrible at it. he also does not want to be involved in whatever is going on with Dean and cas and he craves a return to normalcy. so when cas decides to just bail on the brothers after he's had enough of this. frankly emotional torture, sam is like. more than happy to pack his bags for him and give him money and send him on his way. I think cas does confront dean before he goes and he openly states whatever dean is not ready to face. he's like you love me and that's why this happened to me and i love you and i forgive you but i cannot stand to be here anymore. and he just leaves and does not contact dean for a long time. like i think dean does. get better. because he has to. rwrb thoughts from someone who hasn't read the book (yet)

The good/general thoughts:

pleasantly surprised by the acting! which I know sounds mean, but listen, I saw these guys in other things and I wasn't suuuper into them, so it was a nice surprise lol

THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THE TWO again, pleasantly surprised by that lol they played off each other SO well

10/10 soundtrack, it definitely took inspiration from older rom-coms and I loved it <3

PS I really liked all the side characters! I wish we'd gotten to spend a little more time with some of them, but everyone was pretty great <3 also, all the women were awesome, and I am very gay and very in love <3

Ok, I really, REALLY liked how they showed the two of them texting each other, and the whole editing around it. It was pretty cute

I was living for all the latine songs at the new year's party, that was a nice touch

ok, when everyone was getting down at the party and alex and henry stayed up and stared at each other and time slowed down, I know it was supposed to be romantic, but I have to say it: it was also the funniest shit I've ever seen lol

henry at the party is giving both 'i have social anxiety and my only friend here is a social butterfly and keeps leaving to be with other people send help' and 'i thought you invited me here as a first date kind of thing but you're dancing and making out with other people and i'm feeling so betrayed rn :('

Listen, I'm not usually into rom-coms (I say, like a liar), but I was pretty happy with the writing, in general. I laughed at all the funny parts, got emotional over all the dramatic ones and swooned at the romance bits. Great job, everyone

ok, full disclosure: I don't really like sex scenes all that much (there's nothing wrong with them, I'm just very ace lol), so I usually just use my phone while they're happening, and while I did that a little bit here too, I was still paying attention, and honestly, they were pretty sweet. They did a good job. And, like, I have no idea why the film was R-rated lol you literally don't see anything

again, love the little montages that show the passing of time, while also showing they're keeping in touch and getting to know each other better and stuff. It makes the relationship between the two and the way it's developing feel a bit less rushed, which is nice

Sooo, as I said, I haven't read the book yet, but I've seen some posts about it, and I think after watching the film I've realized that it's biggest flaw is that it's that - a film. It's a great film, don't get me wrong! And it's pretty obvious I really liked it. But damn, I'm a firm believer that book adaptations only work as series. They don't have to be super long or anything, but there is just no way to fit everything in a book in a two hour film. And yeah, when you're adapting something you have to make some changes, but Idk, it's kind of a shame that you lose so much (and even without reading the book, I can tell there's a lot of stuff missing). In any case, I can't talk too much about it until I read the book, but yeah 🤷‍♀️ It does seem like they did a good job, though - like, it genuinely can stand on its own really well, but I guess I'll have to find out for myself

the cosmic turnabout is underrated af and always overshadowed by turnabout for tomorrow so i'm going to make a list of things that are awesome about it because it's my secret favourite case

it takes place in a SPACE CENTRE with ROCKETS. there are literally ASTRONAUTS. if you're a space enjoyer then this case has the greatest vibe and aesthetic and is made for you. the cutscene at the beginning is so space movie.

just the fact that the guy called apollo is best friends with an astronaut. i bet the localisation team were high fiving each other at how well that worked out

the bit when the judge asks what the bomb transport case is and simon's like "YOUR COFFIN >:D" lmao?????

and you already know from the first case that there's a dead body in there which makes it more cursed which makes it eVEN FUNNIER

actually the fact that this case is quite literally-speaking blown apart by a bomb and the two pieces fall either side of turnabout countdown... it's pretty creative, i know it's weird but i like it

junie gives apollo a raw lotus root and he just. eats it. he eats it raw. stuffs it straight in his mouth. cronch. i don't blame him tho like i don't think i'd be able to have brain cells either if my bestie had just been murdered

speaking of which, CLAY TERRAN IS SO FUCKING COOL I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO EXPLAIN????? everyone who knew him is always talking about how he was so cool and he loved life and living and apollo and he was always trying to cheer everyone up and make people feel better like an infectious ray of sunshine. he's named after the planet he never got to leave. he's like a mix of apollo and athena's personalities but as a hot astronaut. like if kazuma "i love my BFF" asogi wasn't an edgy emo badboy and was a cheerleader sunshine boy instead. dude is the actual goat and probably my fav victim in the entire series

like they had to kill him off to nerf him bc he would be too powerful otherwise, he's that perfect. he had the secondmost badass death (the most badass was... someone from turnabout revolution. if you know, you know) listen he took part in this cool badass switcharoo with the rockets to save him and sol from a bomb, then he carried a passed-out sol EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE BOTH IN THEIR HEAVY SPACESUITS, AND THEN DEFENDED THE HOPE CAPSULE FROM A SUPERSPY DESPITE BEING EXHAUSTED AND GETTING STABBED AND DYING AND HE SUCCEEDED EVEN THOUGH HE DIED

the original japanese title for this case is "the turnabout that became a star" in case you wanted to cry harder

his friendship with apollo makes me sob like a baby. apollo can barely deal with the grief and he even has the first of his breakdowns we ever see, and now i'm thinking about the backstory of how they met and all the optional dialogue you can get about the two of them and i could talk about how they're also a parallel to aura and metis (and how athena and sol have parallels regarding ptsd in their career fields) but you're not ready for it and it's another essay entirely

it's even mentioned how apollo and clay were competitive over who could achieve their dream first, and when apollo became a lawyer and showed his badge to clay, clay was so fricking happy about it as if he'd achieved his dream too, and supported apollo through the plot of the previous game behind the scenes and just... okay competitive-supportive friendship WHY DOES THAT ALSO REMIND ME OF APOLLO AND ATHENA? man she would be the perfect person to help apollo cope with the loss of clay... if he didn't, you know, suspect her of killing him

actually apollo losing faith in athena is so heavily foreshadowed in the previous case it makes me insane. also in TWO of the previous cases he brings up clay, in fact in turnabout academy he does it so much that athena pesters him about wanting to meet the guy herself so don't give me any of that "clay was never referenced before the case where he suddenly shows up dead" nonsense YES HE WAS and anyway we KNOW apollo hardly ever talks about his personal life at work, it literally becomes a plot point in the following game, so the fact that he rarely mentions clay makes it MORE personal to him imo okay rant over

actually in turnabout academy we find out apollo and clay have a psychic connection (i'm not kidding about this, this is canon) which means apollo probably sensed the exact moment clay got stabbed, i'm gonna die wtf

apollo having the bandage on his eye before the bombing is. chef's kiss. it's so mysterious and then we find out he did it to restrict his own powers so that he would stop doubting athena. i'm not crying i'm fine. and then he looks so badass later with the coat on and he even looks kinda like dhurke. i SAID i'm not crying shut up

apollo!!! leaving the office!!!!! i'm like 90% convinced he still lowkey hates phoenix tbh (this is more relevant in the next case but it does feel apparent here too) like remember in the previous game when he punched him lol?? i wonder if he wishes he could do that again

i've played this case a million times yet i always forget about the bomb going off in the middle of the trial, it's practically a jumpscare. i love it

also apollo and simon both taking the case so deathly seriously while everyone else is just like "haha funny buzz lightyear case" is also chef's kiss. that bit at the end when athena gets accused and suddenly everyone else starts taking it seriously too. it's one of the very rare cases where the canon ending is BAD auuugh i'm not sane enough for this

solomon starbuck talking about what it felt like to be in the HAT-1 is bloody terrifying. i will have nightmares about this scene

ALSO HE WAS CLAY'S FRIEND TOO I'M SMAD. CLAY KNEW ABOUT SOL'S ASTROPHOBIA AND SUPPORTED HIM AND LOOKED UP TO HIM ALL THE SAME. IMAGINE THIS LITTLE GUY STANS YOU AND EVENTUALLY BECOMES YOUR CO-ASTRONAUT AND THEN HE DIES AND YOU GET BLAMED FOR IT. CRYING SCREAMING ETC

yuri cosmos is funny. he's just a guy on a segway who has looney tunes powers. he would have been the incompetent sidekick of detective arme at the trial if she wasn't, you know, a corpse.

the plan with the launch pads switching around is wack and i'm actually obsessed with it. i'm picturing clay dragging drugged-up sol through the museum and sol's like "huh the rocket looks weeeeird.. .?" and clay's like "uhhhh nnnope haha, no it doesn't, it looks completely normal and fine, ignore all those exhibits on the walls-" jshfkskfsk

and athena was literally passed out in there in a random corner?? well we don't really find that out until the next case but still??? she was RIGHT THERE???

(i'm sorry i can't shut up about clay) it turns out clay also did the "i'm fine!!" early morning chords of steel exercises, so i imagine him and apollo waking up early every morning to voice call each other and do their i'm fine thing together. apollo cheering encouragement at clay while he's doing his astronaut training just like they used to with solomon. just stab me with a fork made of lava it would hurt less

also when apollo was in the hospital he adjusted his chords of steel workouts to be like "THANK U DOCTOR FOR TAKING CARE OF ME" that's so wholesome??? doesn't stop him ripping off all the bandages in the next case and probably bleeding out in court but whatever, i cannot expect him to be normal in these circumstances

you know how in the previous game, no one ever respects him and he's kinda a loser? well here he gets to do something undeniably BADASS, just like his badass astronaut bestie. he saves junie's life during the bombing. idk if it was a "i just lost my best friend, i'm not letting athena lose hers too" or just being a brave person who wants to protecc his friend or what but i'm just glad he finally gets to be cool in a way that no one can deny. and then the next game takes it to the next level with how badass he gets HOOOOOOO BOY

the bit where apollo is talking to clay about how he doesn't have a mum is supposed to be sad and it definitely is, but if you've played the previous game then it is also hysterical. yeah apollo it's not like you went to her concert or use one of her songs as your literal phone ringtone or anything lmaooooooo

this is by no means an exhaustive list and i've barely scratched the surface of how good this case is but trust me it's SO GOOD. it's understandable that it gets overshadowed considering it's basically the same case as turnabout for tomorrow which is the finale, but it holds up on its own too and i love it dearly. the only case that makes me more emo is frickin turnabout revolution, aka the most bonkers emotional case of all time, so that's saying something.

2023 Fic Wrap Up!

following last year's post, i'm going to go through all of my fics for the year and talk about them a bit! again, um, mostly a3, but yeah!

there's so much backstory for the chikahoma that inspired this, but it does end in character death, so i'll warn for that real quick. homare confessed to chikage via poem (i am not good at poetry but i tried lol) and they got together and they just... they were so in love with each other and just wanted to protect each other. but it ended up that homare was dying, and as he's about to die, chikage promises that he'll continue writing poems in his stead. and i. and i shatter every time i think about that.

for context again, me and some friends made a little fake theater troupe like a3, and we're all split into little subtroupes. so devil's gambit is the lead play of my oc/sona (lance, playing sammy) for the troupe, and quill's character (quill, playing lilith) is the colead!

okay, this one is one i wrote for chikatsumu week, so i'll go through each of the entries. it's chikatsumu week, but the actual thing went on for about a month with 7 prompts. i didn't get to finish all of them, but it was slay!

day 1, first meeting. chikage meets tsumugi in act 5. i don't think there's too much to say about it, since it's pretty self explanatory, but i think they're silly. they should stare at each other and try to peel each other.

day 2, letter. a letter that tsumugi writes to chikage following some unspecified incident where chikage disappears. i wrote this with the intention of it being the same universe as this au i have where april becomes the next organization head, lua.

day 3, domestic. it's just chikage picking up tsumugi after rehearsal and they hold hands and talk and walk. i can write so much about people just doing the most mundane shit, i swear. i love writing mundane shit.

day 4, angel/demon. playverse fic, morimiche (moriarty and michael). this one was inspired by a roleplay me and my friend did a billion years ago. basically, moriarty wants to corrupt the angel and drag him to hell with him. which, like. i mean. i fuck with that. go moriarty go. moriarty is a meanie.

day 5 fic, i ended up putting it in a separate fic (next fic in this list) because it touches on some more sensitive topics.

day 5, scars. so this one is an unofficial sequel to a fic i wrote on my alt, where basically chikage. y'know. this is the aftermath, and it's from chikage's pov, and he's kind of hazy in-and-out and doesn't quite know what's going on. it's unofficial because the actual fic didn't have any intentions of chikatsumu, but i figured it'd be a nice little what-if.

the original fic was titled freezerburn, and had a lot of themes of like warmth and coldness and such, so i carried that over here. so this one is titled silver sulfadiazine, which is used to treat burns.

i actually wrote this whole thing on a flight to visit my aunt, and then i posted it when i touched down at the airport. very fun.

this one was for fuyu ship week, though regrettably i only finished two, because i was preoccupied with rarepair week that started days later. i was also really busy at the time, since i was fortunately able to take my latest term abroad, but that also meant i was packing my shit and running documents for weeks.

day 1, garden + growth. nothing too crazy, just cute tsumuguys! i love tsumuguy. i love guy ships, though there aren't very many, which makes me sad.

day 2, debut. no-mankai au where guy still has journey, and tasuku is still at godza. this is based off a tweet i saw once about this concept, so i just wrote a little something.

i actually had plans for the rest of the week! very briefly:

day 3, beach. tasuhiso. tasuku picks hisoka up from the beach at 3 in the morning.

day 4, passion. tsumuhoma. it was going to be just ages of homare waxing poetic about how much he loves tsumugi's passion for theater and gardening and life.

day 5, snow. azutsumu. they're drinking hot chocolate in the lounge in winter and azuma laments how the flowers tsumugi was tending to are dying because of the cold. tsumugi tells him that there are flowers, too, that bloom in the snow. like you, azuma-san!

day 6, home. azuguy. my note for this just says "guy: tadaima; azuma: okaeri". and like. that's all you need to know, really.

the fic itself is a little bit of a love letter to self-shipping in general, and how it can help people get through some tough times. it kind of just explores itaru's relationship with lancelot as a character, and his relationship with the people around him, and just. idk. i like them. because, hey, listen. sometimes i can make out with hisoka in my head as a treat and it fixes me a bit. insert that post about being a little mentally unwell to get better.

rarepair week 2! um. listen. i blame my friends wholeheartedly for this. like several other fics, this was inspired by a roleplay between me and some of my friends. and like. god. i'm so mentally unwell. tl;dr is that merlin spent the entire time antagonizing everyone, but then he's becoming human and shedding his magicky dragon-y nature, and chikage, for some fucking reason, decides to be kind to him.

the title is venus, because it's the morning star! morning star, morgenstern, is also associated with lucifer. so, yes. also in the end note of the fic, the numbers indicate which order the different fic sections actually go in chronologically.

this one was for chikaita week! i had a lot of fun writing for these, and i had previously committed to being chill and low stakes about it, so i didn't have a lot of trouble or stress about it. the title references, of course, their a7 (??? i think ???) animals.

day 1, late nights. chikage hasn't come home and itaru's so worried he throws his matches. chikage's his lucky charm! or actually he's just so worried that he can't focus. either way, they're cute.

day 2, playverse. gawafuta! gawain (kniroun) and futami (uraomote). i think... this is the first fic for them i've posted, though i know there are more on ao3. my and my friend ended up making this ship after (another) roleplay thing, and then just... i just think they're neat, i don't know. i have a lot of gawafuta thoughts. i think that futami's one of the best people to help gawain adjust to getting, like, reverse isekai'd, because of his job. like, yeah, the info gathering stuff, but moreso being a teacher. like, modern jp lit takes a lot of inspiration and cues from earlier parts of jp history and lit, so futami presumably knows quite a bit about history and society as well, and just. i think they're neat.

day 3, office life. this was kind of inspired by when i met my friend and he was telling me about how when he went to shinjuku there were just a bunch of salaryman sitting around on the sidewalks and shit drinking and smoking and i was like... yeah. and then this was born. there's a lot of things about itaru's reputation that he has to keep an eye on, i think... but chikage will help, don't worry! also chikage is super pining and in love in this.

fun fact, there's a deleted line in this where chikage says something like not entirely accurate because he wasn't born in japan and only started living here a few years ago, and itaru calls him a gaijin lmao. i took it out because i don't think itaru would do that but like it's funny to me.

day 4, domestic. "nuh uh" "fym nuh uh" is the reason i wrote this entire thing. i had this exchange with someone on twitter about how itaru just says silly things and i was like. you know what? yes. so i just make itaru say silly things in this one.

day 5, plushies. after writing this, the world plushie didn't even look like a word anymore. and i'm just really obsessed with the mental image of itaru turning all of his plushies away so they don't see him and chikage doing the nasty. there's also references to the extended kniroun lore there (runa) which i am happy to talk about at great length always anytime.

this one was a gift for soda for a little server exchange! they didn't ask for much, so i was like... hm... what's the last thing you said about azusakyo... and then saw vampires and went, PERFECT. I ALREADY HAVE A SAKYO VARIANT FOR NOCT. although he ended up a little different from how i'd originally made him, but i think this works!

the faust backstory is that he's a vampire who's also the head of vampire hunters. why is he hunting other vampires? who knows. he and franz have a history. also, despite being a vampire, he can interact with holy objects and things. he literally trained himself to do that and not to react when it burns. he's crazy, lol. that part i think was inspired by raphael from the mortal instruments. i'm a little unnormal about raphael santiago, but don't worry about it.

the summary of the fic is an excerpt from goethe's dr. faust, who faust is, y'know, name for. he did this bargain with a vampire a long time ago for something. haven't decided what exactly, but something along those lines.

also, fun fact! in my current noct universe, faust's heir is akito, played by azami.

AND THEN I FUCKING LEARNED THAT BOTH THE GIFT EXCHANGES IN DIFFERENT SERVERS JUST RANDOMIZED THE GIFTEES. SO I RANDOMLY RECEIVED QUILL'S NAME TWICE BECAUSE THE POWER OF GAY OR SOME SHIT??? IDK.

this is based off an actual place i went to while wandering around. me and some irls found this cool little tea shop the city. it was really cozy, and there was an actual wall of tea with different blends. i got carnival! it was good tea. the owner asked my friend if he would be willing to help paint a mural on the side of his tea shop with some other japanese people, so that was slay and fun. there was a fire, we made smores! the owner also has a little wood soldering set, and he let my irl draw his face on the wooden counter. it's really nice. anyway, in universe, my irl is kazu, he just does shit for banri.

I love how much of a simp Ash is for her wife she couldn’t look away from her wife the entire wedding and her speech including big bro Abby I--.

Ash calling her relationship with Abby as “brothers from the start”!!! “We did life together” please... that’s the cutest thing and the “she took care of me”. Big Bro Abby guiding Baby Gay Ash through gay puberty is the cutest thing I’ve heard. The way Abby and Ash talk about each other it is such a unique siblingship and they really care so much about each other. But I’m dying that Abby’s ex was Ash’s childhood friend bro the L word chart is definitely something that exists.

HAHA AK making the first move is such a mood calling her from Germany; AK was a sugar mommy from the beginning sending her shit (mixtapes!! they were actual children I love their love) and spoiling the shit out of her from day 1. Also not surprising to me that AK was more in tune with her sexuality from the start than Ash she’s such a confident star that no doubt she was on her game from the start. I love how she was like, “oh wow” when she first met Ash. But also, does this mean that AK was likely Ash’s first and only long-term girlfriend? The story of Ash keeping the captain band after Abby’s last game!!! I almost shed a tear she is such a caring and kind individual to keep that badge. LITTLE BRO loving her BIG BRO man I freaking love them. Ash was SO young at the time still and she was still aware enough to keep Abby in mind for that band. I really hope one day, someone will be able to do that for Ash when she retires if she every (hopefully not) experiences something similar. They’re family bro.

THE PROPOSAL. “I knew I wanted to marry her the moment I met her” and then AK being all sarcastic LMAO. Had the wedding ring for three years “what was your thought process for those three years??” Abby having seen the ring too lmao and making a joke about why Ash waited and then Ash with the “I didn’t want to be selfish, I wanted her to be ready” WHAT A GEM!! I love her so much. She is so patient and reveres AK its unbelievably kind and she’s the OG simp fight me bro. I’m also so glad we got the proposal story without Kyle interrupting (love him, but his little video featured more of his commentary). I hope they share the ring photo at some point but I know that it’s probably a special photo.

THE BABY STORY. The first night!!! High fiving in the hallway as they take parenting shifts I TOLD Y’ALL they dap each other lmao. Also AK is such a mom telling Ash to get the ladder from the garage at 4am and Ash being the ultimate dad and just going along with AK’s shenanigans and her patience bro lmao. Also imagining Ash in her PJs all disheveled trying to close vents on no sleep lol. “I have to keep her alive” why is this something Kyle would say so it makes sense that AK would say it lmao. I love Ash’s patience in all of AK’s dramatics lol. Also AK talking about Ash having trouble sleeping and crying and being so tired and being so willing to take on extra shifts to help and she’s so considerate and loving to care for her partner and her family!! The rock of the household!!

Also neither of them fighting because they’re so honest and transparent with AK. Also Ash loving that AK keeps her accountable and she loves it. Also AK only being slightly snappy sometimes but apologizing immediately. Also AK being a yes person and Ash having to reign her in but doing it in such a supportive way that’s not taking away from all that she’s doing for others. Also AK considering marriage therapy as a “fun” option. Also so proud of her for seeking therapy to deal with childhood trauma and grief and putting her work in. Therapy is a beast and I’m so happy AK feels comfortable to discuss that in a public sphere.

I could totally see how Abby was such a huge mentor to Ash, because even the advice she gives to AK about parenting and the transition to “normal life” - she is such a calm and positive role model and such a great older sibling who cares.

I really love that they’re going to be open and transparent with Sloane from the start and the work they’re putting in to make sure they’re responsible and diligent with how they approach intersectionality and raising Sloane in a mixed-gender household. Also talking about how they want to teach her to be kind and compassionate rather than another cog in the machine! I would kill to have Ash mother me lol that’s the approach we should all take with our children tbh.

They’re talking about retirement LOL honestly I could see them retiring together if not AK retiring first and then Ash shortly after. I’m happy they’re happy in Gotham (lol fuck u Orlando). Also Ash as a WWE wrestler would be hilarious. I’m totally onboard for her theatrics and the spandex and the chair throwing lol. but also Abby telling them she will be there for them during their retirement period to help them transition - BIG BRO AGAIN!! Abby is such a pure soul I love her sm.

What are your favorite things about the ship? Is it bad that I'm blanking on my favorite things? I do think a lot of it comes down to Will and Matt having a really good dynamic and really good chemistry with one another. I think if it wasn't for that I could have easily just been "Yeah I don't see it!" I do actually really like the argument they had with each other before everyone decided on going to the Pyramid, I think it's a good sign that even after what was frankly a pretty serious discussion they could both set it aside and still have the same rapport as they did, same as ever. Of course there were other, bigger things to worry about after that, so......

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? LMAO oh boy, now, it's been a long time since I did a relisten to the early episodes and I've only listened to the ending arcs once on account of me hating them so much so I'm going off half-remembered bits, but I don't appreciate is how they absolutely played into it the Oakson dynamic as the podcast went on, only to basically pull back completely and stick with a "just friends" sort of deal, which, IDK it leaves me feeling some type of way.

Commander Shepard/Thane Krios: I ship it!

What made you ship it? I'm a sucker for a cold, hard badass who is soft with their loved ones and surprisingly gentle and reserved. It's just A Thing and OKAY LOOK, if you had asked me like 5 years ago what my type was, I definitely would not have said "neglectful single dad with a dead wife who also fucking gets killed in a very stupid way whoops" but like the facts don't lie and I am feeling some type of way about it.

What are your favorite things about the ship? I like that Thane finding a second chance at love even after having given up on it, of learning to live again even when (probably especially when) he's dying of a terminal illness. I love that he calls her Siha, a warrior-angel, and like the parallels between Shepard and Irikah both being warriors in their own way and that's what Thane is attracted to? Chef's kiss. I love that when he goes to Shepard on the eve of their suicide mission, he can cry and confess that he once again feels afraid of dying, and I love that when he does, Shepard takes his hand and asks him to "be alive with [her] tonight."

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I will be completely honest when I say that I am not opposed to Thane dying, I just hate the way it happened (he JUMPED on a SWORD), and I especially hate the way everyone just sort of glosses over his death, even Shepard if you romance him and that is because the writers LITERALLY FORGOT he was written as one of your romance options!! I also think the Citadel DLC memorial was terrible, but hey at least we can say that Thane's last words to Shepard were the only thing that canonically makes (a Thanemancer) Shepard cry. So there's that.

Hi! I am asking this to you, the mun, cause you're the only Louis expert I know. How do you think Louis viewed Lestat saving his life at the end of Merrick? What do you think he thought about his new body and new powers? Did he think Lestat condemned him to darkness yet again? Was he grateful that he didn't die?

ANON WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME CRY

listen I'll be honest, it's been like 4 years since I read merrick start to finish, so this is a part of canon I'm actually not an expert on! On this blog, I don't count Merrick as canon, so I don't write post-suicide Louis. I'm still so butthurt about the whole thing and kinda erased it from my memory so please know my grasp on this era of canon is skewed and obscured by my love for louis LMAO

I think, ultimately, Louis IS relieved at his salvation for two reasons. The first being that Louis was literally not in his right mind when he ended his life. I know he had planned to end it before Merrick cast her spell on him, however his suicide note is so egregiously out of character, I refuse to believe it was Louis himself who wrote it. If Louis were ending his life on his own terms, I honest to god don't think he'd be able to do it without saying goodbye to Lestat (and Armand honestly!!). Or at least write more than two goddamn sentences in his fucking suicide note. But ANYWAY my own saltiness aside, I do think that part of him being thankful for being brought back has to be informed by the fact that he didn't even die on his own terms in the first place y'know?

In terms of him being saved by Lestat.......look, it's something I'll never not be devastated by, okay? For so long, Louis was defined by his weakness, and he embraced it not only because it allowed him to cling to the last dying embers of his humanity, but also because his weakness was what would allow him to eventually die, which he sees as a gift. He says himself: "the ability to die is key," and so on the one hand I think one of his greatest motivators for rejecting the ancient blood was simply that he was too scared to go on forever, he wanted to cling to his exit strategy.

The thing that breaks my fucking heart about Lestat’s decision to save Louis though is that he only does it because he genuinely believes Louis would want to be saved. He begs Merrick and David to listen to his thoughts because if Louis doesn’t want to be revived, Lestat is aware that bringing him back might result in absolute catastrophe. So even if we don’t know whether Louis wanted to be saved or not, we do know that Lestat was acting with his best intentions, that he wouldn’t have done it unless he 100% believed it was what Louis wanted. Ultimately, like most things that happen in these books, a thread can be traced back to the essential question of do we, the audience, trust Lestat and his judgment?

David (I begrudgingly admit) also makes some good points when he and Lestat are debating whether or not to revive him— ultimately, Louis had been looking to die for a long while, and the Claudia Debacle had given him enough nerve, but having "survived" one day in the sun, that nerve is probably gone. We'll never know what Louis was actually thinking in that moment, but I do think David is right on this one. I'm sure it was an intentional narrative choice, the way this sort of mirrors Louis' first turning, when he was still human and wanted to die but didn't have the courage, and relied on Lestat to give him a new life. He wanted to die and, having tasted death, wanted once more to live.

Once Louis is revived, he does thank Lestat and David and Merrick, but honestly I think the most telling passage is when he describes his new senses— the way he can hear far away music and feel mortals on the street— and he describes it as "sweet and welcoming" and to me this moment just makes my heart ACHE because it reminds me of when Louis was a young fledgling in awe of the simplest things like the light of the moon or the buttons on Lestat's jacket LOL! While it's clear Louis is overwhelmed by the power upgrade, there is also this renewed sense of wonder and jubilance, and he admits that he finally feels a part of something.

TL;DR— even though I fucking abhor this part of canon and refuse to write about it, I do think Louis is grateful for the chance to live again, and I think a case could be made for the way he approaches his new powers with curiosity rather than horror.

Now, thanks to a robotic replacement invented by Star Labs, she still gets to save lives & was the best in her precinct. She was transferred to Gotham to go undercover & try & help root out the more corrupt officers, but that doesn't stop her from saving as many lives as she can. She & Jason innitially met when they were both investigating the same drug trafficing trade. They bumped into each other, fought for a few seconds on instinct (note that they are fairly evenly matched, though with different skills), before realizing who the other was. Being familiar with heroes, she offers to help, he refuses, she does so anyway. Can be an alpha!Jason x fem!omega if that makes you comfortable. I would recommend that she's not the typical shy omega. The sort who had to fight her way to the top twice over in an omega-prejudice world. She's tough as nails & a badass.

kells (stxrryskygrayson): just had another idea for a one shot or smth:reader staying at wayne manor temporarily with the batfam and having the biggest crush on dick. bruce is taking care of business elsewhere so ofc it falls to dick to make sure you settle in. imagine him giving you a tour (your room’s right next to his), all those lil fluffy things. he’d def carry your things for you, help you unpack… *insert all the fluffy dialogue*being neighbors with him would be nice but also inconvenient at times. example: he’ll hear when you have nightmares and rush into your room (sometimes he’ll hear you cry or scream and it makes his heart hurt so ofc he’ll go to comfort you). he’s so hyperaware of every noise in your adjoining room. like if he here’s a thud or a shattering sound he’ll immediately go to make sure you’re okay. (you’ll be embarrassed because “just dropped a glass, sorry” or “knocked over some books.”) not the best when you need some private time. it’s impossible to be quiet. you made the mistake of thinking the walls were soundproofed when you first moved in (which would make more sense but nO) and dick, thinking you were sick or something, walked in to you touching yourself. my boy probably never knocks. maybe he’d knock after that. his cheeks would be so PINK like aw baby but he’d also be flustered too because he wouldn’t know how to react.

so. about platonic atsuiwa........

i believe they would have that weird kind of friendship where they don't know each other's favorite color but do know about their deepest trauma lol

like, atsumu will constantly rant about his love life (or lack thereof) and iwaizumi will listen with full commitment but pause him to ask things like, "wait, who was that guy again?" or "huh what high school were you from btw?" "what was your brothers name?" etc.

(and somehow its not awkward at all. atsumu answers and they move on)

i might be a bit obsessed with iwa's mom friend energy but can you blame me. he needs to take care of other people all the time or he will die. and with oikawa living overseas now he needs a new brat to take care of, you know.

but its not the same as it was with oikawa, because atsumu gets offended when people try to be caring with him. so iwa has to be sneaky about it, too. like instead of outward saying "don't overwork yourself" he has to go out of his way to invite him to do stuff when he knows the little shit's gonna spend the whole weekend at gym practicing serves again. and atsumu always agrees when iwa asks to hang out because he's a friendless lonely bastard who cries when people show him the slightest bit of love and attention

also atsumu calls iwa to rant about how much he hates samu twice a week. iwa tried to tell him once that he actually loves his brother very much and it's obvious but atsumu brushed it off by saying iwa wouldn't understand lmao

for iwa, tsumu is mostly a brat who needs him but he's also one of the most understanding people on earth. when iwa rants on the phone about his work or his family, he feels like he reaveals too much at the end and tries to cover it like "i mean i dont even know why i get so damn depressed over it this is so stupid" and atsumu will be like "nah i get it. want me to drop by with ice cream?"

and he does!! everybody wants to eat ice cream and cry sometimes!!! iwa needs to be babied too, thank you very much

tsumu's way of caring isnt as clear as iwa's but iwa gets it. instead of dragging him outside (like iwa does) tsumu will come over to his house, order pizza and put a random episode of friends or gilmore girls and sit silently with him and iwa it will be more than enough for iwa.

i feel like this is getting too out of the canon storyline and sounds more like an au but idk

one time iwa said he wanted to try dying his hair and they did it using grocery store hair supplies and at the end it looked so horrible that they both laughed until their eyes watered and the next day they went out to buy brown hair dye to fix it. then atsumu messed something up and the dye didn't work, iwa decided to get a buzzcut..

one time they sent a selfie to oikawa and he was.....not happy about it :D

iwa teaches atsumu how to cook some basic meals and atsumu tries to show off to samu with them

the first time iwa remembered atsumu's birthday and got him a little present atsumu cried and then said a bug got into his eye

they make fun of each other's choices of men

they go to gym together and atsumu always listens to music as he works out so one day iwa asked him to share a link to his gym playlist and it was just full of anime opening and some female kpop bands

oh my god yess yesssss yess YESSS !!!! i am YELLING !!!!!!! loveeeeeeeee all of this oh my god. gym buds atsuiwa is so good. iwaizumi teaching atsumu to cook (osamu is deeply offended that atsumu didn't ask him). atsumu forcing iwaizumi to watch romcoms and tv shows of the like (oikawa is deeply offended bc iwa refuses to watch telenovelas with him, but he'll watch friends with atsumu miya).

you're also so right that they literally know about each other's worst fears but atsumu would not be able to tell you what "aoba johsai" is if a gun was put to his head. iwaizumi could tell you the worst memory of atsumu's life but absolutely could not tell you what his favorite animal is.

like, atsumu: yeah i know iwaizumi best out of the whole national team we go to the gym together all the time

kageyama: what middle school did he go to then.

atsumu: ....

hinata: kageyama you went to the same middle school, that's cheating. atsumu, he went to kitagawa daiichi btw

atsumu: i'm quitting this team

and you have the way iwaizumi takes cares of atsumu vs oikawa so right tbh, like oikawa can get the tough love yell at rant kinda thing going on, but atsumu gets a more subtle kind of care. so true. man. i'm obsessed w all of this THANK YOU
