Avatar Girls Become Joo Dee Smut Story/Series Challenge
(This is an idea that I have been intrigued by for a long time and wanted to publish to see if someone is willing to take a crack at it; basically, an ATLA smut idea involving Dai Li, female characters on the show, and hypnotism. If you'd like to know more or take on the challenge, read the short story inside for more details on what to know and do. (note that this is a challenge))
Hello Readers and Authors
So this is just a heads up, but this is an Avatar the Last Airbender Smut series challenge that involves various girls and women from the show being hypnotized by the Dai Li into Joo Dee and forced to do both practical services in Ba Sing Se but also more personal stuff for them and Long Feng.
You can pick what characters you choose first in the series(stories) and decide how it goes as long as you remain true to the core of the challenge itself. Since this is the first time anyone has developed the idea for this kind of smut series, I would put it out there and let someone write the content based on this challenge.
If someone on this website takes on this challenge, make sure you send a PM or leave a comment about it to tell me that you are taking it on and writing.

stuff about the taz atla au:
Taako and Lup are the last surviving air nomads (and by extension, elves). Lup is the Avatar. I established Taako as an airbender but I think it could go either way; if he's a nonbender, he's still got the high-dex rogue-y vibes of an airbender for any fighting.
Barry is a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe, and the one who finds the twins. He's extremely unnaturally gifted at bloodbending, but shit at most other waterbending until they find a master. (He can bloodbend when it's not the full moon, but usually only to shift someone's balance, shove a limb, etc. Can be very handy when used right, though!)
Lup's hardest element is water. She has the instinct to directly blast stuff, which pushes against the give-and-take nature of waterbending. Once she gets it she likes making huge, scary, ocean-like waves. She's progressively faster at learning earthbending and, of course, firebending comes easiest & becomes a favorite.
Lucretia is also water tribe, probably in the North, though I would love for her to be friends with Barry somehow. She may not be a bender, but she's for sure attuned to spirits, especially the moon. Possibly the whole North Pole spirit imbalance is because of some well-intentioned thing she does while they're trying to repel the fire nation.
Prince Kravitz is trying to capture the Avatar but the Avatar's brother keeps flirting with him and it's very confusing. I don't know if I want to make the Raven Queen be the Firelord but if she's anyone she might be Ursa.
Kravitz is accompanied by Davenport (tell me captain "haven't we earned a little wrath" davenport isn't a firebender), a family member or close advisor who has been secretly a traitor/spy for like a decade. He's mostly coming along to keep his own eye on the Avatar and make sure she doesn't get captured or killed. White Lotus member.
Merle is a swamp waterbender with plantbending and, to everyone's shock in a dire moment, healing powers. He was a good friend of Lup's 100 years ago. Also White Lotus.
Magnus is an earthbender, Julia is a Kyoshi warrior. "Why isn't Magnus the token nonbender" well you see this whole thing is an elaborate AU of that one stretch of SC where Taako learned fighting and Magnus learned wizarding (joke)
Magnus is desperate to interact with spirits but is not attuned to them at all. He's excited to meet Lup because she is obviously the bridge to him getting to pet spirit dogs. Might have a pet dog or bear fusion variant.

To this day I still think about my Kyoshi Warrior Zuko + NWT Azula AU.
Not enough people talk about the potential of Zuki meeting early and becoming besties, while Azula is working on making Yue have a stronger backbone and not let anyone tell her what she can and can't do.
Suki and Zuko practicing with their weapons. Suki encouraging Zuko to practice bending, giving people dirty looks if they stare at the firebender weirdly. Zuko joining the Kyoshi Warriors and being there for the ambush™ before he leaves Suki behind in order to be Aang's firebending master.
Azula training Yue to defend herself. Azula getting soft for the spirit touched princess who reminds her so much of her dumdum brother, both so caring and nice and eugh. Yue showing Azula that she can be more than a weapon for her nation. Yue telling Azula her frustrations and fears. Azula being the first one Yue tells her engagement about. Azula being the one who does whatever she can to break that marriage because she knows Han (or however the fuck you spell his name, I don't care about him enough to remember) is a fucking little bitch.
Zuko and Azula reuniting in the North Pole. Both recognize each other yet at the same time, aren't able to. Both of them taking time during the Gaang's stay to talk and catch up.
Azula tells Zuko how she felt betrayed and hurt when Ursa left her at the NP. How it took her so long to understand why, and how it was still hard to grasp her around everything.
Zuko tells her how he was afraid he'd be outcasted by the residents of Kyoshi Island. How he almost stopped bending because he thought he wouldn't be accepted.
Azula tells him about Yue. Zuko tells her about Suki.
They're together when Zhao arrives with their uncle. They're together when they take down Zhao, something both had been longing to do, kick his ass.
Zuko asks Azula to join him and the Gaang, but Azula declines and decides to remain by Yue's side. Once her brother and his new friends leave, she goes to find her only friend in the NWT. And she finds her with her uncle, helping him set up a raft so he could leave as well. Azula doesn't think much of the extra bags until Yue asks if she'd join them. That she's tired of hiding behind the walls of the NWT. That it was about time they did something and she was going to see the world, as much of it as she could. Azula joins them on their raft and they head off. Next stop: the Earth Kingdom.

Hi, have any sokkla fics recommendations? Thanks!
Of course I do! I'm not sure whether or not you want smut or if you want a one shot vs a multi chapter story so I'll list a bit of all the categories
Prisoners dilemma by PurplePlatypusBear21
In an alternate universe where Mai and Ty Lee betray Azula slightly earlier, Sokka finds the princess trapped in the Boiling Rock, barely clinging to life and sanity. What will he do?
(No smut, multiple chapters, fluff, hurt/comfort)
P a i n t by lotusunset
After Suki's untimely death, Sokka needs to do a little soul-searching. Along the way he finds Azula living in a small town, making a humble living as an artist. He also discovers she's keeping a secret she didn't even know she had.
(No smut if I remember correctly, multiple chapters, hurt/comfort)
Accidentally posted this when I just wanted to edit it and add more fics, please ignore for now
All the pain of yesterday by ButterflyGirl006
Her own body is killing her, and she is so far from home.
OR
Azula falls irreversibly ill and has to make it back home in order to die properly by Fire Nation standards. But home is miles away, and filled with people she doesn't remember.
(no smut, multiple chapters, mostly focuses on Azula and her relationship with everyone around her but does contain Sokkla, hurt/comfort)
Can you handle the heat? by tjlyricz
Wax drizzled over his chest. Azula left a more than a generous amount on his right nipple. Tears pricked the sides of his eyes, but he refused to let them fall. He refused to give her the satisfaction of breaking him.
"You're a horrible liar, Sokka." Azula tilted the candle again, this time spilling a small stream over his left nipple. She drank in his cry of pain. "I can't help but wonder if you secretly like me treating you like this."
(smut, one shot, tw non-con)
Gladiator by Seyary_Minamoto
In a world where the Avatar wasn't found, the Fire Nation has taken over two nations and they strive to overcome the last one. Water Tribe warrior Sokka seeks to fight for his people's rights, but he's captured by his enemies. His life is no longer in his hands as he fights as a Gladiator, and his fate will eventually depend on the Fire Nation Princess, who needs him for her own ends...
(eventual smut, multiple chapters, slow burn, occasional hurt/comfort)
The Blizzard by DeadDirector
They were supposed to be in the South Pole for the Festival of the Winter Solstice. However, the harsh and unyielding blizzard had other plans for them. Trapped in an igloo together, newlyweds Sokka and Azula have to come up with something to pass the time.
(Smut, fluff, one shot)
My Slave Boy by dickard23
"No kissing on the lips," she said to him. "It's too personal." After his invasion fails, Sokka agrees to become Azula's slave to free Suki from Boiling Rock. Follow them as they go from slave/master to lovers and eventual spouses and all of the chaos along the way.
(smut, multiple chapters, eventual fluff, I know that it sounds like it but it's not really 100% non-con, more like meaningless angry sex)
The wine, not the label by PurplePlatypusBear21
"You're sure you're gay, right?" Azula asked with hopeful skepticism. "Yeah…" Sokka replied, the upward inflection of his voice betraying his uncertainty. "Then why are you staring at me like that?"
(No smut I think, multiple chapters, humor and romance)
The Failed Search AU by AKIIZAYOI4869
When Sokka sees Zuko dangling Azula over a cliff, his big brother instincts kick in and he decides to step in before things get worse.
&
Part 2 of The Failed Search AU. Zuko has finally found Ursa, but things still don't feel right. Meanwhile, Sokka decides that the best way for Azula to heal is to take her away from the fire nation, and after a suggestion from Suki, he takes her to Kyoshi island.
Azula gets the healing that she deserves, Sokka discovers that somewhere along the way his feelings towards Azula began to change, and Zuko has a lot of growing up to do.
(No smut, part 1 is a one shot, part 2 has multiple chapters and is not complete, hurt/comfort)
Sokka's Dumb Decision by sthomasf
Sokka get off work at Republic City, and heads to bar. There, like most nights, he makes an incredibly dumb decision
(no smut, one shot, fluff, humor, angst)
Interruptions and a Confession by AKIIZAYOI4869
Sokka attempts to confess his feelings to Azula but keeps on getting interrupted. He is not amused.
(no smut, one shot, humor, romance)
Surprise by OnceUponACaskett
“Um, whatcha got there, Sokka?” Aang managed to squeak out.
Sokka grinned and held out the cup in his hand. “Oh it’s mango-papaya juice! Want some?”
“Uh…not what I meant. Other hand, buddy.”
OR
A short drabble about Sokka visiting Katara and Aang and bringing Azula with him.
(no smut, one shot, fluff, humor, inspired by fanart)
Okay now I'm done, if you need more recommendations don't hesitate to ask

Zukka Fic Idea: Lunar Phototaxis
Originally I described this one as “Zuko is a sacrifice to the moon god (Sokka) and ends up becoming the consort of the moon god (Zukka)” which is pretty basic. This one is most straightforward story idea I have currently, at least in my opinion.
Warnings: mentions of rape/non-con, child and adult slavery/prostitution, mentions of pedophilia, referenced suicide, suicidal ideation and human sacrifice. Most of these happen before the events of the story and will mostly be mentioned, not happen concurrently with the main story itself.
Background details: In this AU, Zuko was born into a rich family off the coast of a continent still known as the Fire Nation, but they are not royalty. For most of Zuko’s childhood he had a normal life, but after his mother passed away (possible suicide) when Zuko was 14 life changed very dramatically. It turned out, much of their family’s wealth, while being somewhat related to trade, was also brought in by Zuko’s father selling their mother to his other rich “friends” which she agreed to do in order to protect her children.
Once Ursa was gone, Ozai instead switched to selling Zuko. Zuko figured it would only be a matter of time before Azula would be abused in the same way, so he prayed to Agni, the Sun god, to protect her. He figured he could endure it, as long as he could save her; and it seemed his prayer was answered.
His uncle Iroh, who was often traveling and doing actual merchant business, happened to visit and offered to take one of the children with him on a journey to the other continent (Earth Kingdom), and Zuko convinced both Iroh and Azula it was better for her to go. She did, and after a time Ozai and Zuko received a letter saying Azula had been selected to join an order of highly skilled warriors (Kyoshi warriors) and would be sending home some of her pay as time went on, cementing her in a safe place away from their father.
Zuko, though very grateful for his answers prayer, did start to feel bitter towards his situation. He didn’t have to “entertain” often but as he got closer to 18 he wondered how his father would get by after Zuko was technically an adult and could leave.
Turns out he couldn’t leave. Ozai had Zuko locked into his room, and claimed to outsiders that Zuko was troubled/ill in order to secure his claim on him and continue to use him for cash. By this point, it didn’t seem fair that he had no way out; even the window had bars on it to keep him from escaping or taking his own life. No matter how much he begged Agni he couldn’t seem to find the same blessing of peace, and Zuko began to curse his god instead, feeling only hopeless despair.
Then, at the peak of summer during Zuko’s 19th year, there was a solar eclipse. The phenomenon, while not impossible was still seen as a bad omen, as it was not predicted for another 50 years. It seemed the planets had fallen out of alignment, and the seas turned dark and stormy for weeks on end.
The story actually begins here, when Zuko is just past 20 years of age, thin from little to no exercise, pale from lack of sun, and bruised from abuse. His father, supposedly gaining clarity after receiving a strange letter from Iroh, declared the twin deities of the Moon and Sea had grown jealous of Agni and demanded blood. A sacrifice was needed to appease them and bring the warmth of the sun back to their coast.
Zuko, who in his adulthood has “lost his appeal” for many of Ozai’s less than savory friends, was taken from his cage of a room and sent out to sea, alone in a small boat, bound with no way to free himself and swim to shore. Zuko was resigned to the fate awaiting him, figuring it would be better to die than remain languishing in his room any longer.
Despite the harsh rain and rocking waves, the boat seemed to naturally remain upright despite it all, like the ocean were guiding him through the storm until there was not a speck of land in sight. Then, suddenly, the heavens cleared and the full moon shone down upon the abruptly still sea. Zuko’s boat, hitting the moonlight, sunk into the reflection of the moonbeams on the water. When Zuko should have drowned, instead it was like he was hit with a strong gust of air, and like that, he had entered the Realm of the Night Sky.
From there, Zuko meets Yue, the caretaker of the stars, one of the Moon god’s first High Priestesses who was welcomed into the Realm upon her death. She leads Zuko to the heavenly alter room where the twin gods, once known as Tui and La, are overseeing a procession of minor deities and spirits offer up sacrifices. One can only stay in the Realm if they offer something, and Zuko realizes he has nothing to offer but himself. So he does, fully expecting the worst, but the Moon god only takes a kiss.
Being touched by a god is overwhelming, and Zuko passes out only to wake in an empty bedroom. From there, he learns a lot of things, like how the Realm of the Night Sky works, what the other denizens do there, who Tui and La (who now go by Sokka and Katara) truly are, and why he was brought here in the first place.
A few little spoilers; Sokka started taking a male form after he changed his name, but he can change his body’s form after every new moon. And Zuko, despite now being in a godly realm, is still technically mortal though his age is suspended while he lives there as time doesn’t work the same in a world made for gods.
Anyway, shout out to @justaloadofgarbage-blog for being interested in this story idea! It’s pretty dark, especially the background stuff, but the story is supposed to be bittersweet. I have a lot of ideas on how I want to move things forward, but I don’t have any clear “end” in mind, so for now this will remain as notes.

Not sure if you already have this AU, but 5 headcanons for a suki and azula role swap?
I don't. I do have one where Suki and Toph are Fire Nation princesses, and Zuko and Azula are the Earth King's kids. And I have one where the Kyoshi Islanders are firebenders, and Suki is Aang's first firebending teacher, but I don't have a straight swap. Unfortunately, you caught me in an introspective mood. You won't be getting five headcanons, more like possibilities.
In my complementary elements AU, the one where Suki and Toph are Firelord Ozai's daughters, Suki is a nonbender. Suki's lack of bending and Toph's blindness mark them both out for disfavored status, and they are each disregarded and discarded by their father. So how does Suki's position change when Zuko is the older brother, and Suki is a firebender?
Ultimately it comes down to what you think Ozai values in Azula as opposed to Zuko. I don't think it was actually her firebending talent, not really. Ozai picked his favorites when Zuko and Azula were still both very young, and I'm not sure Ozai would have been capable of judging whether his preschool aged child was prodigious. Likewise, Zuko himself is shown not to be a slouch with firebending, defeating a master firebender in the prime of life, when Zuko himself is only sixteen. The show regularly tells us that the real thing holding Zuko back as a firebender is his utter lack of confidence, and deep sense of shame, both of which were caused by Ozai's disfavor, while it's also implied that Azula's status as a prodigy is a self fulfilling prophecy, because she spent her childhood both being told by her abusive father, how wonderful she was at firebending, and also told that she had to be wonderful at firebending or she had no value whatsoever, and would be discarded like her brother, so she worked obsessively to be perfect at firebending.
So if not firebending talent, what was the deciding factor? Ultimately who an abuser like Ozai chooses to favor is somewhat arbitrary, however, it's implied that it was her lack of Zuko's strong innate sense of compassion. She didn't feel the same sort of distress that her brother did when bad things happened to other living creatures, and Ozai, who liked to make bad things happen to other living creatures, saw this is something he and his daughter had in common, and therefore something that made her special and better than everyone else. And instead of attempting to help his child build that empathy muscle, like Ursa was doing, Ozai instead nurtured this lack of compassion until it became outright ruthlessnes, and a worldview in which she viewed everyone who wasn't either herself or her father in terms of how she could use them.
Suki has quite a bit in common with both Zuko and Azula, showing signs of both being perfectionistic, and having a strong sense of duty and honor. But does she have that innate strong sense of compassion? I would argue she does, and this is what causes her to lead the Kyoshi Warriors into leaving to find a way to help people during the war.
So if both of Ozai's children share the "weakness" of a tender heart, does he even pick a favorite, or does he simply resent both of his children, and blame Ursa for their defectiveness?
As for Azula on Kyoshi Island, it really depends on how much of Azula's cruelty you think is innate, and how much was caused by being raised by Ozai. If it's entirely a product of his raising, then we have no idea what Azula's personality would look like without his raising, because her perfectionism and her deep anxiety about failure, as well as her entire worldview, are entirely shaped by his raising.
If, on the other hand, you see Azula's cruelty as something she was born with, things get interesting, because with without her status as a princess and everyone knowing that her father approves of her actions, somebody like Azula would have to be very sneaky, and very careful about who she picks to target for control and victimization. And if she were able to be that sneaky for long enough to be appointed to the head of the Kyoshi Warriors, I have to imagine that being a Kyoshi Warrior would become really horrible really fast.

Recent/In-Progress Works:
March 2024 Monthly Short Piece, setting down roots: The thing is, Kyouichi has finally and permanently uprooted himself from Ohtori’s poisonous ground, but even as he feels himself growing into something new he’s desperate for familiar soil. The thing is, Wakaba needs a roommate to help pay rent and ease the loneliness, someone who will believe her when she lets something slip about the insanity of her previous school. The thing is, on paper, this new arrangement is perfect for them both. The thing is, in practice it might not be so perfect. A post-canon work for Revolutionary Girl Utena. Featuring Saionji and Wakaba trying to live together after Ohtori and navigate all the mundane difficulties of the real world. Also featuring a few Shie Hassaikai character cameos, because I could not resist. (You can read the entire series of my monthly short pieces, all the way back from August 2016, here.)
And the Universe Said “I Guess We’re Doing This the Hard Way”: My piece for the 2023 Natshig Big Bang. One of two/three chapters published. Neither Todoroki Natsuo nor Shigaraki Tomura put much stock into the concept of soulmates, unlike what seems like every single other person in the world. The future Symbol of Fear would only be weakened by a soulmate, and Natsuo is highly skeptical of the idea of meeting someone magical that will fix all his problems. So how the hell is whoever's in charge of this going to get them together? Spans one day, featuring angry cosmic geese, Todoroki drama, and maybe--just maybe--a little bit of hope for these two cynical dorks.

I was thinking about the scene when Leia asked Obi Wan if he was her father. Someone said that his answer "I wish i was" implies he loved Padme (something platonic) or he wanted kids, etc.
But what i think in the moment it was he implies "it would be more easy to you if i was, but the truth could hurt you. It would be more easy if i was your father than the man your real father become."
Well, that was what i thought :)

Zukka week 2022
Day 6: accidental dating (or dads zukka)
Based on FLWOGB (@oldpotatoe), in one of the ways (I think, more headcanon) my favorite secondary character, Miura, noticing when Zuko and Sokka were flirting and practically acting like a couple.
And yes, also based in OFMD blackbonnet scene (love that coupleeeee❤).
[I love drawing Miura again, she is my favoriteeee!]
@zukkaweek
[ID: first drawing, showing a green/brown background, to be similar to a forest and a wood where Sokka and Zuko are sitting. Both are talking. Sokka is wearing his well-known water tribe robes, and Zuko a simple red/gold robe that remains a bit of his book 3 outfit, with the exception that Zuko's hair is more longer. Also both are with food or tea respectively. They seem happy together, with sparkle and little hearts around them.
In the second drawing, is Miura, OC from 'Feels like we only go backwards" by oldopotatoe in the middle, looking the interaction. She had a realization, and whispers "Oh Agni, this is happening", meanwhile Sokka and Zuko are smiling and blushing to each other, not noticing the Kyoshi Warrior. This two big obliviousness. END ID]

Zukka week 2022
Day 5: soulmates and chronic pain
In a world where everyone, after their 18th birthday, you start to share something with your soulmate. Something your other half needs to complete you.
Katara had dreams of a wonderful world, with no war, and the view from ocean or the sky. She had that faith in a better world only for these dreams.
(Hakoda and Kya were worried, because if she had dreams, a little bit of gray in her eyes, that mean her soulmate had 18 before she was born.)
(Then Kya died. Hakoda left. Sokka had no time for soulmates)
After the war, Sokka start to had memories from the day he comes to 18th. No, not memories. Nightmares. Pain. It's never gone, the feeling of not being enough, loneliness, being helpless, with no voice to scream.
Sokka knew his soulmate is Zuko.
But, why did Zuko never told him about their bond?
Why did he left him appart?
What is he truly hiding?
Zuko...
(Zuko always had five minutes to contemplate the blue in his eyes...always...)
@zukkaweek
[ID: background with blue, purple (cold), red and yellow (warm) colours mixed. Sokka and Zuko, divided in the middle, for lightnings/glass crashed. In the left side, in the back with red lines (from the top) is Kya with no clear face, Yue smiling, Hakoda giving his back, and a little view of the southern water tribe ships leaving the south in the middle of the night.
In the other side, warm colours, blue lines (from the top) is Ursa leaving Zuko, Azula laughing maniacally going mad, and Zuko in the Agni Kai where he got the scar, crying.
Zuko and Sokka, both with scared expressions, but Sokka is the one who can show more. Zuko is crying from his eye with the scar. Sokka had his hand buried in his loose, disheveled hair, desperately. Zuko had his hair almost loose, part of his chest with scars.
Sokka express where Zuko can't. Zuko just deal with the pain. END ID]

in modern atla aus, i’ve noticed people tend to make zuko/toph/suki either chinese, japanese, or occasionally korean. atla draws from a lot of different sources, and i don’t think any of those are the wrong choices to make! however, i do think it would be interesting to see some other cultural/ethnic interpretations. (the examples i’m giving below are based on the assumption that fics involving them would take place in a country beside those mentioned, with the gaang being immigrants or children of immigrants.)
for zuko, the fire nation does draw a lot from imperial japan, but a fair amount of their architecture, regalia, and other cultural aspects come from southeastern asian countries (zuko’s firelord regalia is drawn from thai theatre costumes — another win for theater nerd zuko). i would love to see more fics with viet, thai, or even mongolian zuko (i’m currently working on one where ursa is from central vietnam). with zuko, because ursa is canonically from a different part of the fire nation from ozai, he could also be mixed asian: ursa from one country, and ozai from another, or ursa being a part of diaspora from a different country but growing up in the same place as ozai. hawaiian ursa is another possibility: the comics may be controversial, but her hometown of hira’a is inspired by japanese-settled hawaiian villages in the twentieth century (the name hira’a is a contraction of hirahara, the first name of one of the first japanese people to become a hawaiian settler, according to the atla wiki). taiwanese ursa is another possibility. singaporean zuko could be interesting as well, due to the multiculturalism in singapore and the diverse cultural influences of the fire nation.
toph’s hometown of gaoling in canon is fairly obviously inspired by china. however, rather than just pegging her ethnicity as “chinese,” her family coming from a specific ethnic group or region could be interesting. toph’s specific style of bending is based on chu gar southern praying mantis, which is a martial art originating from the hakka people, one of the most diasporic chinese community groups, which lends a lot of possibilities to her modern cultural heritage. her earth rumble outfit is influenced by european fashion styles — perhaps her grandparents or great-grandparents could have immigrated to europe, and then her parents to another country? or her parents could have met when her father immigrated — he looks a bit different from a lot of earth kingdom citizens (most notably because of his brown eyes). the earth kingdom also has influences from central asian cultures, so mongolian toph could also be a possibility.
for suki, there are also a few different possible modern interpretations. the one i find most compelling, but would also probably require the most research to do it justice, is okinawan suki. my knowledge of okinawan history isn’t that comprehensive, so if anyone else knows more about it please correct me if i’m wrong, but there are some parallels with kyoshi island: somewhat like how kyoshi island seems separate from a lot of the earth kingdom, okinawa is legally a part of japan but is culturally different. in atla, chin the conqueror attempted to colonize kyoshi island before kyoshi split it from the mainland, and kyoshi islanders appear ethnically different from the rest of the earth kingdom; okinawa was previously ruled by the ryukyu kingdom, and then was invaded and annexed by japan (and later colonized by the u.s. — a whole other issue) after the ryukyus refused the request of a japanese ruler to help his military campaign against china, and okinawans are culturally and ethnically a different group from japan. though these outcomes are slightly different, the cultural and ethnic identification difference strikes me as similar, as well as the historical struggle against colonization. the kyoshi warriors could be a group suki organized to protest against american bases in okinawa, or a cultural heritage association for suki and other okinawan girls to connect with their culture.
and some assorted extra ideas: airbender ty lee theory lends itself really well to ty lee being half-tibetan or the descendant of tibetan diaspora in another asian country; south asian influences are also big in the fire nation, despite the lack of characters who look south asian other than a few, so half- or quarter-south asian zuko could also be cool; south asian jet and haru is also an interesting concept; mai’s name is the cantonese pronunciation of “sleeve of a robe,” so she could be from hong kong or macau (the two places where the cantonese dialect is/was an official language).

Ursa as regent in the tiniest firelord au is really *chef's kiss*, like imagine all the possibilities! 🙌 What happens next?
So when we last left our motley crew, the Gaang had just breached the bunker and Zuko has come face to face with his mother for the first time in years. And the Gaang is very surprised to learn of the existence of another Fire Nation Royal.
This is, in Suki's professional opinion, an absolute clusterfuck.
There really is no other word. None whatsoever. Suki is fresh out of any other vocabulary to express the degree to how unbelievably bad and awkward this situation is.
Zuko isn't answering Aang's question. Which, rude. They very much deserve some kind of explanation, any kind of explanation really. One that could hopefully answer "Zuko why is your mom ready to fight us?"
Or "who the hell is Azula?"
Or Suki's personal favorite: "did you just forget about the entire other heir to the throne who was not struck from the line of succession?"
But really, she's not picky.
"It wasn't important," Zuko mutters.
(Okay, that's a lie. She is, and she's also been trying really hard to give Zuko the benefit of the doubt. Even after he burned her island. But the others vouched for him having changed. But silt and sand, it's hard to not see a similar kind of carelessness in forgetting to mention his sister's existence.
Suki'd rather lose an arm than forget one of her sisters, and none of them share a tie of actual blood.)
The little girl peeking out from behind the stone throne, the one with the Fire Lord crown (because yes, Suki did pay attention to her lessons and does know what that hair ornament means) has an impressive scowl. "Mom, I told you Zuzu wouldn't care."
"Don't call me that!" he snaps at her.
"Zuko!" his mother says, sounding disappointed.
Zuko isn't the only one who recoils a little at that tone. He turns to the woman and says in a softer voice, "Mom, I don't...how are you here? Why is Azula wearing that? Where's dad?"
If anything, the girl's scowl gets fiercer, but she doesn't flinch. (Suki's impressed despite herself.) "I'm the Fire Lord, dumb-dumb, why else would I wear it?"
Zuko's mom looks heavenward. "Azula..."
"He asked."
Katara apparently decides to take pity. "You're, um, rather young. I think is where your...brother...was trying to go."
Azula shrugs. "Dad died," she says, matter-of-fact, like she didn't just drop an absolute bombshell. "Fire Sage Koga tried to tell you to come home, but you wouldn't. So he told me I had to."
"Excuse me, did you say Fire Lord Ozai died?" Sokka asks for all of them.
"Almost three years ago," Zuko's mom confirms as Azula nods.
Zuko makes a strangled noise. "Three years?! I could have been home, I could have had the throne for three years?!"
"It's mine, dumb-dumb." Suki can easily hear the challenge in the kid's voice.
"You stole it!"
"Did not!"
"Okay, HOLD IT," Aang yells before diplomacy can degrade any further. "This...this isn't helping us figure this out."
"What's there to figure out?" Toph asks. "We came here to help you beat Fire Lord Ozai, Twinkletoes. That job's already done, so what else is there?"
"Well, technically, I think I'm supposed to defeat the Fire Lord and bring balance back. But I really don't want to fight at all right now," he adds quickly when Zuko's mom (Suki should really ask her name at some point) tenses.
"That, I think, we can agree on, Avatar."
"If you have to defeat the Fire Lord, does that really mean combat?" Suki wonders aloud. "Or can it be, like, at cards?"
Azula looks over at her and her eyes go wide as she stares. Suki shifts slightly, wondering if she's got something on her face or anything out of place. "Mom," she hisses, "Mom, she looks like Kyoshi."
Suki blinks at the weird non-sequitur. Then again, kids? "I'm one of the Kyoshi Warriors. Our uniforms are in remembrance of Avatar Kyoshi."
The little girl edges out from behind the throne. "The Kyoshi Warriors still exist?" She starts moving closer, looking incredibly interested. "What about Rangi? Are those stories true too?"
(Zuko's mom pinches the bridge of her nose. "Of course now I regret making her learn about the Avatars...")
Suddenly, Aang zips up next to the girl, eyes bright and a familiar grin on his face. He taps Azula on the shoulder. She whirls towards him, immediately sinking into a defensive stance. Aang clears his throat.
"Tag. You're it, Fire Lord."
And then zips to the other corner of the room.
Everyone's still for a moment. Then, Azula recovers and chases after the Avatar with a cry. "Hey, get back here!"
Which leads to the incredibly bizarre sight of the pint-sized Fire Lord attempt to play Tag with a master airbender, which as far as contests go, is almost certainly one Aang is going to win.
Well, Suki supposes that a victory on a technicality is still a victory.
