THE SHADOW SELF - HOW TO GET CLOSE TO KNOWING SELF AND KNOWING WHO WE ARE NOT . . . . The personal shadow develops naturally in every young child. As we identify with ideal personality characteristics such as politeness and generosity, which are reinforced in our environments, and we shape then into what can be called and seen as the New Year's Resolution Self. At the same time, we bury in the shadow those qualities that don't fit ourself - image, such as rudeness and selfishness. Many forces play a role in forming our shadow selves, ultimately deter- mining what is permitted expression and what is not. Parents, siblings, teachers, clergy, and friends create a complex environment in which we learn what is kind, proper, moral behavior, and what is mean- spirited, shameful, and sinful. The shadow acts like a psychic immune system, defining what is self and what is not self. For different people, in different families and cultures, what falls into ego and what falls into shadow can vary. For instance, some permit anger or aggression to be expressed , most do not. Some permit sexuality, vulnerability or strong emotion many do not. Some permit financial ambition, or artistic expression or intellectual development, while some do not. All the feelings and capacities that are rejected by the ego and exiled into the shadow contribute to the hidden power of the dark side of human nature. However, not all of them are what we consider to be negative traits. When I take stock of 2019, I get a mixed feeling. Losses, (loans and bad investments), Break-ups. I had 2. Highest since my playing days. I learnt the importance of exposure. Interaction with the world offers more learning opportunities than just googling. The Universe (University of Life) teaches a ton of lessons, from how we deal with bad drivers, poor service deliverers, clumsy waiter, crazy pastors, bad police, powersupply companies, and the list goes on. You get a chance to see yourself in more than one pictures. Mirroring where we are in life, events and news of world events come to us to guage our responsibilities to ourselves and to our neighbours we claim to love. In many scenarios, I have been made to stop fights with as simple as N50, teaching that our ego was the problem, not the money. We grow when we relate. I love all who I encountered, this 2019.
