cecelia carter’s episode placement, the heat
cecelia has been hiding away from reese ever since literally running away from her last time. it’s not the one her hospital mandated psychiatrist would approve of, but it’s all she can handle at the moment.
she’s been slowly pulling away from everyone and everything, throwing herself headfirst into work, both at the hospital and with the volunteer group. spending more time at both than she’s spent at her home.
her phone buzzes with messages from tk asking if she’s seen owen, if he’s in the hospital and after a quick check she tells him he’s not in the hospital. it’s hospital gossip later that tells her owen has been arrested as the arsonist terrorizing austin.
the arsonist that has been at the forefront of her own nightmares on the hours of sleep she snatches, the nightmares that have her reaching out to matthew for the first time in what feels like ages. she doesn’t say anything and for a while neither does matthew before he eventually starts telling her about something called cruffins that della has started to sell at the cafe, tells her that he loves her, that they love her before she can hear that familiar alarm go off in the background. all she can manage to say herself is be careful before she lets him go.
cecelia picks up her phone what feels like a countless amount of times to call, drives by the firehouse and then subsequently shoves her phone back into her pocket and drives away before she can do anything. she can’t do this, not now, not for them.
caroline vanishes in the middle of her shift, just gets a phone call and vanishes without saying anything to her and all the swirling panicked thoughts that rush through her head, all the ones that end with her finally stripped of her white coat and lifeline are false, caroline’s the one helping bait the trap for the arsonist, for arson investigator raymond, part of the long con apparently.
caroline is explaining to her as much as she can about what’s been happening when hospital dispatch gets the alert about the fire, evacuation and possible injuries at the 126. caroline pulls her back from the edge, relaying the only injuries seem to be cuts from shattered glass, asking if she
cecelia is doing charts for a teenage boy who ran into his family’s mailbox trying to skateboard when hospital dispatch goes off again, relaying injuries involving a structure fire at 540 linwood avenue, carlos and tk’s home. there’s no other news besides the 129 responding. cecelia grabs the radio before caroline can stop her, demanding more information, pushing for another station to respond, for supplemental EMS when caroline pulls the radio away from her, issuing an order to keep the line open and updates clear.
they both sit there, caroline’s hand firm on her shoulder as the updates eventually start coming in, all culminating in varied second degree burns, smoke inhalation, but no casualties.
after the dust settles cecelia finds herself in the chief’s office once more, there’s no white noise this time, no way around any of it. the psychiatrist in the other chair and it feels like deja vu because she can remember sitting in that chair, them telling her she needs time .. this time isn’t so simple. they don’t call it a suspension, but she knows what’s happening. she’s reckless, impulsive, crosses boundaries left and right. they don’t call it a suspension but she knows what’s happening.
