on today’s episode of essay-length hot takes nobody asked for:
So I freak out and internally implode whenever ~bughead~ doesn’t let their ship set sail as much as the next person, but I’ve been (over) thinking about it and maybe doing all this weird ‘everyone breaking up and going to the person they dont really work with’ is actually a good thing in the long run.
Not saying I like it, in fact I have approximately seven fanfics that deeply demonstrate HOW MUCH i don’t like it, but this is the canon storyline we’ve got.
Since the writers clearly want to drag it all out for as long as possible because they… want to (their choice, its their work of art, we can only glare at it from afar), perhaps they’re trying to go full circle and prove that couples like bughead, varchie, choni and even kangs are the ones that will work out in the end.
here’s my reasoning:
Yes, I have scrolled as fast as humanly possible through my dashboard to avoid the jughead and tabitha gifs, and earlier today learned that they sang ‘perfect for you’ and my immediate reaction, after I’d finished mourning their platonic friendship, was just *vomit emoji*. But, then I saw the lyrics to perfect for you…. And it sounds like Jughead is trying to change himself into being someone ‘perfect’ so that tabitha will like him. That just doesn’t strike me as either healthy or long lasting. He shouldn’t HAVE to change himself to be in a relationship with Tabitha. Get better, yes, because he’s recovering, but change himself??? They were good friends, they worked well as a team, but in none of those interactions did he try to change himself to make her happy. So why is he now??
And take Fangs and Toni for a moment - they just had a baby together, and they’re apparently in love after one episode (hey if it works for barchie and veggie then why not -.-), but really, aren’t they doing this because they work well as a team and are starting to think ‘maybe we can be a perfect little happy family’???
And Veronica and Archie (won’t lie didn’t watch the musical ep so can’t be sure) broke up because they see themselves doing different things in life (?) and veronica wants to go back to New York. And she wants to work on herself (valid)  and for some reason goes back to Reggie the sister-swapping gigolo next ep (whom she made THIS face at when she found out:
Tumblr media
But I digress.)
With this in mind, I would assume Veronica is fearful that, like she lost herself in her relationship with Chad, she’ll lose herself in her relationship with Archie because he isn’t a big time New York City high roller like Reggie must want to be. So she’s hoping that maybe Reggie, who she works well with in a team, could be the one for her.
Now, Betty and Archie…. My soul shivers with cold despair as I even type this, but let’s humour them for a second. Archie is upset that veronica has left him, betty has been shown to use sex as a coping mechanism to avoid her trauma, makes sense they might start their FWB situation again, right??
Except…
Betty is devastated by the loss of her sister and needs to stay in Riverdale, Archie needs to stay in riverdale because he has 673 jobs there, and both of them have shit they want to move on from or be distracted from - they’ve been shown to work well (dare i say it?) as a team, and they’re apparently good friends with each other, so why not give dating a go since their first choices (and make no mistake, Veronica is Archie’s first choice and Jughead was Betty’s first choice) are unavailable and they’re both depressed, traumatised and lonely??
So this should all be just fine and dandy, then right?? Everyone’s happy with their friends-to-lovers relationships, they can frolic blissfully in Pickens park with the loves of their lives shouting “Go teamwork!” Because this is the height of passion! Right??
No.
None of the above mentioned ships have achieved anything more than showing that the characters are SETTLING for the relationships that are ‘second’ best because they’ve come to the conclusion that this is safer than going for the ones they really love. You can’t get burned by your second choice because they don’t hold your heart in their hands - after all, you haven’t truly given it to them.
So if all goes to what I think (hope) is the plan, then by the end of this mysterious 5 episode event, most of these ships should have realised that their relationships are all just relationships of convenience. They aren’t passionate about each other. They are trying to force themselves into a ‘perfect’ relationship that suits what they think they need.
But inevitably:
Betty will realise that nobody understands her like Jughead. Nobody else lets her feel vulnerable and shows her its okay to open up. Jughead will realise he doesn’t have to change himself to suit a relationship, and he and Tabitha can still be friends - Betty accepted his darkness for what it was, and he loved her even when she showed him hers.
Veronica will realise that she doesn’t have to give up being who she is, even if she chooses to live in Riverdale. And she doesn’t need to be with another Hiram-Lodge wanna be - she loves the small town boy who tries to be good rather than rich. She sees the value in his desire to help others, and HE sees her passionate nature and refusal to give up when she knows something is right!
Toni and Fangs will part amicably as happy little coparents, and i’m sure Kevin and Cheryl will eventually sort their shit out - what’s beautiful about these four though, is that they’ve been working on themselves all season and have actually spoken to each other a fair bit. I’m not even going to pretend to know whats up with Cheryl, but she at least leaves Thornhill occasionally now, and while I don’t know how its going to happen, i’m sure kangs and choni will rise.
On that note, fangs still doesn’t know kevin wanted to win him back, so that can be some actual tension between the characters in the coming episodes.
So where does that leave Tabitha and Reggie?
I can see it going two ways:  1. Tabitha franchises pops diner and moves back to Chicago where she doesn’t need no man, and Reggie keeps being a little philanthropist car salesman (possibly still hooking up with veronica’s sister) 2. #Teggie rising???
They’re both very driven people, both business-minded, both excited about the opportunities life has to offer AND they’ve both been shown to be incredibly ambitious.
They’ve hardly interacted this entire season…. Maybe the writers are Saving a sneaky little surprise for when all the main ships get back together??
We can hope.
Anyway, I wrote this instead of an overdue essay (a real one for my masters degree) so i’m gonna leave my theories in the tumblr void for the time being. Let me know what you think :)

i have no idea when the voicemail takes place but i bet before or after betty's captivity doesn't matter, she's gonna take the blame nevertheless. they'll start saying (i actually saw these comments that's why i'm upset) "why jughead has to take the blame? she's the one who cheated and broke him." or simply "she deserves it". i honestly have no idea why they can't accept the fact that both of them somehow hurt each other. betty apologized for what she did seven years ago, she will surely again. jughead needs to clear the things up about the voicemail, they need to talk and "fix" themeselves first, then they can comeback to be our bughead™. it's not fair to blame only betty, i know the reason jug sent that thing is because he was hurt (and still not over her, i don't see him or either of them hurt each other intentionally) but he still said something bad enough to betty that she thinks he doesn't want anything to do with her anymore. and if you think about it bh situation is pretty fun, i mean he wants so badly to talk to her, she's like dude wtf do you want i thought you hated me (even tho we still haven't seen her admitting that she's not over him yet, but that's a matter of time). we love (2) investigative idiots in love^^
there’s a very large assumption that they haven’t talked in the 7 years, isn’t there?
i don’t know if i think that yet (it’s possible, sure) because i felt it was implied when they talked about the voicemail that they had been in communication. without the full story, everyone speaking their truths about the voicemail is just a lot of assumptions based on minimal information.
what we know for sure:
he left her a voicemail that made her think he never wanted to hear from her again
he looked like he had no idea what she was talking about when she brought it up
he was using/drinking in new york to the point of blacking out and losing time
something happened in new york to traumatize him to the point of repressing it (is it why he started drinking and using drugs? did it make his substance abuse worse?)
what we don’t know for sure:
how long they went without speaking
what prompted the voicemail
why betty didn’t answer the phone when he called
where betty was during that time
there’s a lot of people hanging onto a kiss from high school and that’s whatever, if they want to sit in their feels until august about it, i’m fine with that. i’m more interested in the story as a whole and i feel like ras implied there was more to why they’re more awkward than varchie so i’m very curious to know what, if anything, happened in those years that led up to the voicemail. did they talk? did she find out about his drinking/drug use and say something (basically a train of thought that stems from the “don’t be such a betty” line because i know people often forget that riverdale is telling a whole story but shockingly enough, they are and this could be something that makes more sense in retrospect or it could be a random one liner thing. which is to say that we’ll know when we know as with all of riverdale stuff, ha).
some people are always going to blame betty for everything wrong in jughead’s life, you know that. let them. jughead is an adult™ and owns his choices. which includes forgiving betty, still being in love with her, and getting back together with her. much to their future displeasure, i’m sure.
i’m not going to assume i know the whole story by only having seen half of it. some people have. that’s fine. and i agree, i think the bughead stuff is going to be pretty good in 5b. am i speculating on things? sure. am i attached to anything specific? no.
just remember that all those worst case scenarios everyone yelled about all hiatus? didn’t happen. people wanted him to hate her, to yell at her, to never talk to her again and what did they get? none of that. their projection of dislike for betty on jughead isn’t affecting the writing on the show and i’m sure that frustrates them but that’s not our problem.🤷‍♀️

Hi,
I don’t normally sends asks but that episode broke my heart. I feel like a big, angry break up would have been easier to handle than what did happen. It felt like a disservice to all the love and passion that Bughead have for each other and how crucial they have been to each other. They don’t have families they can rely on but they have each other and have been through so much together. I felt like this was Archie’s story and I didn’t get much of their POV. I also know Betty should have told Jug a lot sooner but she was also the one who didn’t want to take it further yet it feels like she faced more consequences than Archie. I felt Varchie was well done and I do understand Archie more now but this felt at the expense of Bughead. These two had been everything to each other and then it was just quietly over and both just seemed to accept it. That just doesn’t fit in with the characters I’ve been watching for four seasons ( tho obviously not the first time I’ve questioned the writing). Sorry just having a rant but was hoping you could make me feel better!
Aw, I know bb, I know. I was just ranting to @thatiranianphantom about how emotionally unfilled I felt by 5x03. But, you know, it’s Riverdale. Take heart that Betty and Jughead reaffirmed the fact that they will always love each other, and that it ended very much unresolved. It seems obvious that we are being set up for a reunion post-time jump. Hang in there! And I know there are going to be lots of fic writers who will explore all of this in a more nuanced and satisfying way than Riverdale did.

Recappin’ Riverdale, 1x10: The Lost Weekend
Tumblr media
This episode is such a good example of how to portray so many emotions wordlessly. Bughead exist on honesty and acceptance. I would submit that this is what made them last so much longer than the other couples on the show.
- Sigh. I really don’t want to do this one.
- Why does school go to 3:01? That’s oddly specific
- If I just start skipping the narrations would that be cool?
-  Look I have zero doubt the Riverdale cast has partied together and it’s like if they’ve done that why are these party scenes so awkward?
- Ah, Jarchie scenes and normal teenage boys playing video games. Two more things that didn’t last.
- This is actually really sad and sweet. At the end of the day, Archie is still a kid and he wants his parents together.
-  Don’t feel sorry for Hiram, don’t feel sorry for Hermoine.
- Honestly, I feel like Betty’s intentions were good here. A bit misguided, sure, but it did honestly start out as a small gathering to celebrate Jughead and from what we know about her, it did come from a place of love.
- Ah the fingernail cuts thing. Another thing that was quickly forgotten about.
- Again, Betty and Jughead built a really healthy relationship foundation. Their instinct is to be very honest and transparent with each other.
- Okay, so in this episode there is confirmation that FP wasn’t ONLY a shitty father after Gladys and Jellybean left, but right from Jug’s childhood. But cool, lets selectively ignore that.
- I am VERY MUCH skipping past this dance battle thing, which I honestly think has to go up there with the rocketship for most ridiculous scene ever.
- I honestly feel bad for Cheryl and god she can rip people apart with words. Also thank GOD they started letting Madelaine do her own makeup. It is SO noticeable when she does her own, it looks about 5000 times better.
- What a great and non-problematic way that Riverdale treats its POC. Also Chuck is HOT.
- God honestly Veronica’s parents are toxic before we even saw them on screen.
- I’m skipping a lot of the party too.
- Yes, one of these teens fathers was invited and it will not be awkward at all.
- Yeah it’s the famous I’m a weirdo scene and it’s just as cringey. This is just PEAK Riverdale. It’s up there with “I’d know those abs anywhere” and “the epic highs and lows of high school football”
- Right after this speech you can tell Jug knows he’s gone too far. And he has. He was an asshole.
- Ah almost directly calling the twincest out. So close to doing something about it but not quite.
- Again, I feel so bad for Cheryl
Tumblr media
me @ riverdale
- “is that why you became a mediocre musician overnight” THIS is the kind of lampshading I live for
- Even when it’s bad Jughead still defends Betty, and we begin the tradition of Jughead punching people who insult Betty
- FP saving Bughead. We briefly stan. Briefly.
- IT’S THE FIRST FALICE SCENE. I wish more time had been devoted to this.
- And the first of FP’s Somewhat Accurate Snake Facts
- Could we read the symbolism of Jughead not wearing his beanie in the Bughead scene? It sort of symbolizes him throwing his security blanket away, and being completely open and himself.
Tumblr media
- Nice parallel with Varchie too. Them being the person the other confides in, and feels safe with. While I genuinely wish they had kept this up, I don’t think this was the case in later seasons. They seem to protect information from each other and I don’t think it benefits them.
- Sidenote, I love Veronica’s outfit. It’s teenage-looking but also so cute.
- I so wish for more Jeronica scenes. They’re hilarious together in the brief interactions they have.
- Hermoine Lodge is not innocent, I do not support her, and I will die on that hill happily.
- Jughead eating his whole ass cake.
- Love Alice’s hair in this scene. Super cute.
- Veronica and her capes.
- I DEMAND more B and V scenes.
- How did Hiram know that Veronica trashed the pearls?
- Welcome, Molly Ringwald! You never really did leave the teen genre, did you?

what are your favorite gay ships in rvd?
welcome to my gay agenda!
kevin/moose are the only canon gay ship that i adore even with all the flaws. i feel like ras wants that so he put more effort into writing them and it’s the only kevin relationship that has been meaningful. i will wait until s9e23 when moose comes back from the war or whatever and marries kevin in the last second even if they don’t have any scenes leading up to this.
however, if these writers were braver and went kevin/reggie, BOOM! all the other ships would explode. imagine how iconic, how well written this storyline could’ve been, note that reggie never bullied kevin, how much it would bring to their characters. sighs BE BRAVE @riverdalewritersroom
still on the very heavy reggie-is-bi!topic, i have a hard time shipping archie/reggie because i feel like they’re too in love with veronica to do anything without her, but in a threesome or ot3 with her, i’m in.
i do ship munroe/reggie too because i think it would be the non-stale version of archie realizing his two boyfriends now like each other more than they like him (kinda what happened with archie and bughead but that was sort of boring)
cheryl/veronica would be a DREAM COME TRUE, because this girls just light up around each other and veronica is the only person who cheryl couldn’t overpower and even though i am varchie or die at this point, i would like to see it, not in an endgame situation, but yes, yes, yes.
josie/valerie wecouldhavehaditall.mp3 but instead we got cheryl being a creeper and josie running for her life. listen, i was never a huge josie fan, but i adored valerie and i always felt like there was something between them.
sweet pea/fangs even though i tend to stay away from all things serpents i cannot deny that they were married and that sweet pea never loved anyone more.
betty/veronica i have a very specific headcanon for beronica, in which i would rewrite s1 so veronica kissing betty would make betty question her sexuality and she’d spend a long time thinking she was pining for archie when she was, in fact, pining for veronica. with that, it would open the way for a slight controversial ship that i kind of dig too, which is betty/toni. i can also see beronica as a forbidden romance in “another era”.
fred is bi and since i still haven’t accepted his death, i will forever ship him with whoever would make him happy.
edit: i forgot to add elio to the list of the gays and i would love to see him with kevin in some fun storyline.
that being said, i do not ship any of the following gay ships: choni (i just hate the way they’re written), kevin/fangs (eh), joavin (joaquin was the trashiest trash), lopaz (i just can’t see it as a ship) and it’s hard to me to ship archie with anyone but veronica, so that counts for bi!archie too, but i could see him living his best tinder life swiping boys and girls right.
anyway, just as a conclusion:

002 Veronica Lodge
How I feel about this character: i love v. i have since the very first episode. i find reformed mean girls trying to better themselves so much more interesting than regina george types. that immediately drew me towards her. my love for her has just continued to grow over the seasons
All the people I ship romantically with this character: honestly, veronica is the character i find most shippable. archie is who i like her with most and who i want her to stay with, but i also dig cheronica, sweetvee, and lopaz
My non-romantic OTP for this character: beronica. yes, the show neglects them and, yes, they have their faults, but they love each other so much. they’re precious
My unpopular opinion about this character: i don’t know if it’s an unpopular opinion, but, i guess i feel like she gets a lot of unnecessary hate, like people look for reasons to hate her. i mean, it’s not exclusive to her, i see the same thing happen with the other core four members as well, but it seems like she gets it the most. that could just be because i mostly stay in the bughead fandom and, for some reason, a lot of bh shippers don’t care for her
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: bisexual veronica!!
my OTP: varchie
my crossover ship: i’ve never really understood crossover ships, so n/a
a headcanon fact: i don’t know if it can be considered a headcanon since we technically saw it on the show, but veronica picking out her own engagement ring is just so overwhelmingly her that i can’t accept anything else

REQUEST: headcanons for sweet pea & a river vixen - anon A/N: this is actually an incredibly old headcanon request from earlier this year - sometimes, I don’t get around to all of the things requested, but I do keep each and every single one in a doc on my laptop. I was going through them earlier this week looking for some inspo and decided what could be better than drilling out some for y’all. hope you enjoy, and remember! sharing is caring!
Sweet Pea had never really cared for sports growing up, and only participated because of Fangs most of the time. His growth spurt had hit at a young age, making him unstable and off-balanced for a while, therefore running had never been his forte.
The most he could get on board with was basketball, and that was only because his height was seen as his biggest advantage; growing up, the boys played street ball with the other kids on the Southside
When Southside High was shut down, and they were forced to relocate to Riverdale High, Sweet Pea had very little interest in joining Fogarty on his mission to make the team that following spring.
Of course, that was until Sweet Pea laid his eyes on you at the welcoming assembly.
You had come parading out in your uniform, glossed lips spread in a beaming smile with your hair pulled back and smoothed to perfection.
Cheryl had insisted that the River Vixens perform at the ceremony and be on their best behaviour, despite the very obvious distaste left in her mouth as she mutters the words “Southside Serpents”
You hadn’t been particularly enthused with the merge of the two schools, but you also hadn’t voiced much of an opinion, either. As far as you were concerned, kids needed to get their education somewhere
And really, it was about time Cheryl scoped the fresh meat and cleaned house.
He hadn’t noticed you, but you sure as hell noticed him. How could you not have? How could anyone not have? Aside from the largely obvious fact he was a whopping six-foot-plus, Sweet Pea was also notoriously known for his bad reputation and even worse temper. So when he walked into a room, he owned it.
You spent the entire period studying his frame and features, from his broad shoulders, to the way he cracked his knuckles, fiddled with his rings, and seemed to drift off into his own thoughts on occasion
He was cute, you decided, and he didn’t appear to be trying to piss anyone off or push any buttons, so you also concluded that he couldn’t be as bad as he seemed.
At the end of their first week, you confidently strode into the gymnasium with your poms high, scanning the crowd for his face
He was already looking at you, which admittedly threw you off, and made you a bit nervous. But once the music blared from the speakers, and your feet began to move, it was all too easy to pretend like he were the only person in the room watching
Cue the smize
Oh, how Sweet Pea melted at the smize. He couldn’t even hear fangs in his ear, he couldn’t see the other vixens, he was so incredibly transfixed on your body movements, your legs, the way the skirt teased him like a hooked finger beckoning him
He spends his entire lunch period walking around the school looking for you, nervously fiddling with his curl when he passes by anything he can view his reflection in
Fast forward: it’s just over three months later, and Sweet Pea has been nothing but sweet on you. He made the basketball team alongside Fogarty, and therefore has a harder time than some of the others keeping his focus on the game with you shaking your poms (among a few other things) - though he never gets over watching you turn down players from the opposing team, because when he’s on the court, he’s a student from Riverdale, not just a Southside Serpent, and to the opposing team, he’s just another kid with a hot af girl
finding balance with each other, giving sweet pea more opportunities to enjoy his high school experience
Loves that you have so much faith and trust in him, loves that you accepted him and his friends so quickly and with open arms
Loves it when you visit him after practice in your uniform even more
He sits in the gymnasium during practice after class, only because Toni convinced Cheryl to allow it. He’s always on his best behaviour: he’s quiet and doesn’t say much, claps on occasion, but mostly spends that time with his headphones in, watching you intently
Being that one gross, cute couple who posts photos in your uniforms
“Number seven on the court, number one in my heart!”
When he asks you to prom, it isn’t done without the help of the other vixens, the serpents and the bulldogs. Not that he had been able to convince them all himself, that was all done with the help of Cheryl and Veronica and their love for all things romance and flare
Congrats, sis. You’re now one of Riverdale’s top power couples - alongside Choni, Bughead and Varchie.

Riverdale Can’t Develop Relationships Rant
Ok so this is going to be long, sorry for that.
Choni (Cheryl/Toni)
• Don’t get me wrong, I like Choni and I think it’s good that Cheryl has someone who loves her but this relationship lowkey came out of nowhere.
• Lets review: they have a few very short conversations (if you can even call them that) in which Cheryl says something rude, Toni says something along the lines of ‘I know you’re acting mean for a reason’ and Cheryl basically responds with ‘I’m popular, totally fine, and totally straight ha ha ha 👀’. Other than that they don’t really spend much time together until the Love Simon scene.
• The Love Simon scene: so, Cheryl is outside this theater and is going to see the movie when Toni shows up and offers to see it with her. Cheryl accepts, which is odd because up to that moment Cheryl had been pretty clear about how she felt about Toni and the serpents. There’s really no reason for Toni to want to spend time with Cheryl either, they didn’t know each other well and all their previous interactions were unfriendly.
• (Toni highkey just wanted to get into Cheryl’s pants, but that’s a story for another time).
• (Also was Cheryl planning to go see Love Simon alone?? she was going to sit there, in the back, completely alone and in the closet and return home from just crying in a theater by herself?? That was her frickin Saturday night plan)
• After the movie they go to Pop’s and Cheryl comes out to Toni which partly doesn’t make sense. I realize Cheryl was emotional that night and she didn’t have friends to come out to, but why would she come out to this random serpent of all people? Did she know Toni is bi, and if so, how? It seems very odd to me that Cheryl would out herself to a gang member she saw ONE movie with.
• Once Cheryl comes out, Toni calls Cheryl sensational. Remember how I said earlier that Toni wanted in Cheryl’s pants? Well, here’s an example of that. THEY HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR LIKE LESS THAN A MONTH. There is no way Toni could know if Cheryl is sensational or not, though it was a nice thing to say.
• Also it was kind of a weird thing to say. Sensational?? To some random north side redhead that made ur gaydar ping? Really Toni?
• Anyways, they have some flirting moments which are actually pretty cute, Toni saves Cheryl from conversion therapy (damn Toni gets attached real quick) and they seem genuinely good for each other but the premise of how they get together is weird.
• They go from 0-100 in a very short period of time. Over the course of a few episodes (maybe a month or so in Riverdale time) they go from being lowkey rivals to sending heart eyes at each other and we haven’t seen a lot of screen time between them since the show deleted a lot of their scenes. Them deleting the scenes makes no sense because they could’ve easily fit them into the episodes and it would have made Choni seem a lot more developed, but nO.
• Cheryl becomes a serpent near the end of season 2 which I kind of understand more than SOME people in that gang (ahem, Archie) but still, Cheryl has hated the Serpents for most of her time on Riverdale and now she’s one of them. It makes little to no sense. She wouldn’t have joined if it weren’t for Toni and again, she’s only been dating Toni for maybe a month or so?
• Either way I guess the Cheryl Hating the Serpents storyline is dropped now, so thanks for the inconsistency Riverdale.
Bughead (Jughead/Betty)
• WHERE DO I EVEN START WITH THIS SHIP OH MY GOD THE WRITERS HAVE TURNED IT INTO A DUMPSTER FIRE!
• ok, let me rephrase
• So if u watch the show u definitely know bughead since it’s the most popular ship in the show. They’re also the Ship of Going to the Extremes.
• If I go in depth about this it’s going to be way too long so I’m just going to list how Bughead evolved over these two seasons: it starts with Jughead and Betty being cute, Jughead climbs in her room and calls her Juliet, wears this tux and smiles at her, and they do normal teenage first relationship stuff. Then shit gets crazy.
• Season one is relatively tame to be honest. They seem a little too into each other for a couple that had been dating for about a month or two, but whatever they’re 16 and I can understand getting overly invested in each other when you’re young like that.
• It’s a very rushed relationship. In the first and second episode Betty has a crush on Archie, cries about him, seems heartbroken when he says he only thinks of her as a friend. By like the seventh episode (there were only 12-13 episodes in the season, I’m sure, so Bughead happened within ten episodes) she has completely forgotten Archie (who she liked for years and had been previously been best friends with, though she barely hangs out with him in current episodes) and is kissing Jughead.
• As per usual, Riverdale takes Bughead from 0-100 in the blink of an eye and competely changes how they act.
• For the whole first season Jughead actively does not want to join the Serpents and is very clear about that. However, at the end of season 1 he gets a Serpent jacket and all that changes. While Jughead is off doing this, Betty is being the typical ‘girl next door’ and has that crush (but lmao, they ditched that storyline too sO). There’s one episode where this football player, Chuck Clayton, lies about Veronica giving him a Sticky Maple (some Riverdale sexual act, put the dots together yourself) and so to get revenge B & V decide to tie him up in a hot tub and burn him until he admits what really happened on the date, while filming. This gets weird very quick because Betty shows up in a black wig and lingerie and says that ‘Betty couldn’t make it’ (Taylor Swift is sueing), then once Chuck confesses she tries to drown him, pours maple syrup on him, calls him Jason, and tells him to apologize to Polly.
• so instead of Bughead staying the cute relationship it is in season one the show makes them bring out the worst in each other and act like they’ve been dating for years. They’re obsessed with each other. It’s kind of unhealthy, they literally make each other worse.
• Jughead becomes the Serpent King and Betty becomes his Serpent Queen, despite having little to nothing to do with the south side besides her connection with Jughead.
• yep, another Riverdale gf joining the Serpents for their significant other
• They’ve also only been dating for a short while and go from being two damaged, trying their hardest teenagers to two gang leaders (Jughead literally skins a woman) and it seems they just keep going further and further which each other, increasing all the dangerous crap they can do.
• How did they get to this point? No one knows. A couple kisses and some longing looks quickly turns into this crazy ass gang relationship where they both do terrible things and the other is completely okay with it.
• Betty does this Serpent initiation dance in front of a bunch of old men and her mom, it’s very sexual and she’s in her underwear on a pole. She also starts wearing her Dark Betty (black wig and lingerie outfit from when she tried to drown someone) to bed with Jughead and briefly becomes a cam girl.
• Season 1 Betty would never do this
• They totally change both of their season one personalities to help fit the plot and are suddenly ready to do absolutely anything for each other, despite the fact that Betty had a HUGE CRUSH on Archie about 3-5 months ago
• If Jughead kills someone, Betty will be there to cover it all up and wash the blood away, previous storylines and character development be damned
Varchie (Veronica/Archie)
• I honestly don’t have much to say about these two because while they’re underdeveloped, they aren’t the most underdeveloped couple on the show and actually have some good moments together
• But anyways, the show starts when Veronica comes to Riverdale. Archie sees her at Pop’s and immediately likes her (they end up kissing in a closet at a party early in season one) and every viewer can tell that they’re going to date because it’s just so obvious. He has heart eyes from the moment he sees her. Veronica seems to like him too but she holds off for like two seconds because of her best friend (? not really, B & V don’t interact ?) Betty.
• Most season 1 relationships are fairly wholesome tbh.
• Yes, they have their drama because it’s Riverdale but no one is doing anything too drastic yet
• Archie is a COMPLETE fuckboy for the first season. For a lot of the season he dates this teacher, Ms. Grundy, and they have these sex scenes that I guess are supposed to make us think a teacher/student relationship is cool? Which, no. She tells him to stay away, he won’t leave her alone, and eventually Ms. Grundy has to leave to go screw other students/get choked out. So Archie moves on. He dates Valerie (one of the forgotten Pussycats, don’t worry u don’t need to know her name since Riverdale will give her zero screen time) for a hot minute and I forget why they broke up but I remember she throws a drink in his face so that happens. He also kisses Cheryl one time but isn’t really into it. When Bughead starts dating he throws weird jealousy looks their way even though he said he only liked Betty as a friend, it’s clear this dude can’t make a decision.
• Surprise, surprise, in season 2 this all changes and Archie starts making decisions. Which isn’t exactly a bad thing, but he becomes very committed to Veronica (again, keep in mind he’s only known her for about 3-6 months)
• Suddenly he’s ready to become hubby material and meets her dad, who he has a weird relationship with. Veronica’s dad is in the mob or something and Archie kind of joins his business (he’s like an unpaid, crazy intern) and runs around doing whatever Mr. Lodge asks him to. He’s a total obedient puppy. He makes promises to risk his life protecting Veronica, runs after a robber who stole something from her (possibly a necklace, idk I haven’t watched that episode in a while) even though literally everyone tells him not to and that it’s dangerous, gets kidnapped by her old (boy)friend, and says I love you first.
• Not all of these are bad changes but they’re sudden, out of the blue changes. He goes from kissing like 4 (?) girls and being jealous over Bughead to being totally committed to Veronica over the course of a few weeks. Seriously, it’s like at the end of season 1 he’s kinda fuckboy Archie and then in season 2 he’s willing to throw himself in front of a truck to protect her.
• Throughout this Veronica lowkey joins the mob or something. The show isn’t very clear about what’s going on with her family, except that it’s bad and Veronica goes from not really wanting to be in it to wanting to run the business to just wanting to be a normal family again. It’s very on and off.
Other Relationships (do I really need to name them, they’re so in the background that I literally can not remember who’s with who outside of the core four and Choni)
• Kevin gets to kiss a couple guys in the show, one of them being Moose. What’s going on with Moose? I can’t remember if he’s out or not but since they’re kissing in the season 3 promo I guess something is happening with them. I don’t really know because throughout the whole show they’ve gotten like 1-4 min of screen time. I feel like the show is going to have them kiss randomly (no one really knows what’s going on with them so any kissing between them is already kind of underdeveloped) and not talk about it for the rest of the season
• ARE REGGIE AND JOSIE A THING OR NOT? They flirted (weird because they’ve never spoken to each other in the show before then) and a lot of people shipped/still do ship them but we haven’t seen much from them. What was the point of having them flirt if you’re not going to do anything with it, writers??
• BETTY AND CHERYL: they’re relatives and while sometimes they’re nice to each other, other times they’re just terrible with each other. They’ll go from smiling and being friendly to arguing and hating one another within seconds. Betty actually blackmails Cheryl with her brother’s murder video (more evidence of Bughead changing each other) in one episode but there’s been episodes before/after that where they seemed friendly together.
• BETTY AND VERONICA: take this romantic or platonic, which ever way u want, but they screwed over this pairing. The first 3 episodes they’re calling each other BFFs and saying how they need each other in their lives and then they just kind of... ditched each other. They barely interact and when they do they’re arguing, which is very different from how Season 1 was.
Conclusion:
• Riverdale DOES NOT know how to gradually change someone’s actions/personality or how they interact with friends/significant others. For a lot of the characters their season 1 selves are almost completely different people from their season 2 selves.

I wanna say it, I’m gonna say it : Toni Topaz is the one of the most kind-hearted and genuine people on Riverdale.
First of all : How she was with Cheryl... She was nice with her even tho Cheryl wasn’t nice at the first time. Plus she’s always there for her and she made her feel accepted and loved by introducing her to the Serpents which I hope will be a family to Cheryl because that girl deserves love. Also Cheryl opened up to her and Toni was always there to support her.
Also even if I I didn’t ship the Tughead kiss she still waited for Betty and Jug to break up before kissing him so saying she broke up Bughead is irrelevant and false because no and Tughead wasn’t even a thing.
Anyways I could write about Toni’s beauty inside and outside and about Choni forever because *no offense to the other ships or anything* I think they are the most genuine and beautiful ship on Riverdale. Sorry but the other ships like Varchie and Bughead get pretty must just sexual and I prefer Choni anyways. And I hope to see more of Choni/cheryl being happy with toni in season 3 because it is everything.
Oh and also the fact that Vanessa Morgan and Madelaine Petsch are both best friends and Choni shippers is literally melting my heart they are just QUEENS and I staaaan so bad.

Something riverdale fans have to accept is the fact that bhva are toxic. Try to argue all you like but its basic facts. The fact that bhva fans can never actually justify or argue against the fact that betty and archie cheated on jughead and Veronica proves that they know they are but refuse to accept it. Cheating is wrong and lying about cheating makes it worse. Also the fact that bhva were then only ships not to be included in the trailer says something. And even if VA are getting content in the first 3 episodes we all know it's gonna be fan service that they are doing in the beginning to get it over with.
Barchie and jabitha are beautiful relationships that are not rushed, and mature and grown up and have chemistry that is in no way toxic.

What i want to see happen on the next 6 episodes:
Buckle up kids this a looong one. Idk if anyone’s gonna read this but, i hope you read it and if you did, like it if you agree or share your opinion in the comments 😊 If you disagree i mean let’s discuss it???
Betty and Jughead
Jughead learning everything that Betty has been lying about.
Webcamming.
Why she initiated the kiss with Archie and what did she feel? Does she still have some part of her that wants to try it out with him?
Getting deep with her mental illness
Everything about Chic and the murder he and his father covered for them
I want Jughead to ask if the webcamming and the kiss happened before their first time having sex. And Betty not lying and admitting that she hide it on purpose. Jughead being really pissed about and telling her something about sex being intimate and should happen with comfort and trust in a relationship.
And this time i want Jughead to hear her out but also call her out on her bullshit. I want to see where he stands morally and not accept everything she is saying.
After this happens i want them to be separated and have some time alone. I want them to go in to season 3 single. I would be okay if they are buddies too. That would be cool.
I want Betty to discover that she in fact has feelings for Archie. (Because lets be honest, she forgot her feelings for him in one episode lol) We can see some flirtation going on with them.
I want Betty to discover she is not okay and that she needs help. I want her to do something for herself and look what she has done to her friends and apologize. Apologizing to Cherly about being insensitive and blackmailing her to lie on court in favor of a man who covered up his brother's murder. Also not being there for her in hard times.
Aaand apologizing to Veronica (aka. her ‘bestie’) for kissing her man and not talking to her about it. Slut-shaming her, instead of talking about why she is mad at her she blames her for her parent's actions. Overall not being a good friend. I want her to admit that she's been not a good friend. She can even say it was due to confusion about what's going on about her mental health, maybe jealousy towards her (she can even say what she feels about the kiss and actually being hesitant about if she likes him or not)
And to Kevin cause she constantly pinpointing his sexuality for some fucking reason. And using him to catfish and stuff.
I mean of course to Juggy about being a bad lying girlfriend. After the apologize Juggy would break up with her cause that's too much.
I want Jughead to realize her boo is not an angel and needs to fix herself. And realize he is also not an angel, but a hypocrite and a selfish booy who can be better imo.
 Archie and Veronica
I actually find Bughead worse than Varchie but i want Varchie to break-up like in a serious way. Because i want Veronica to be a total rebel and cross with her family. And Archie siding with Hiram I want her to be like 'yes i'm a Lodge but that doesn't mean i'm a criminal' and actually side with the Serpents or at least help them. I also want Juggy and Ronnie have 'is this a date?' kind of thing where Veronica goes public about how she had enough with her family and she is not with them anymore. And i want Juggy to eat a burger and share her chips with her.
And Archie is a big reason to the break-up cause he was very deep with the Lodge family and he lost himself. And Ronnie can see he's turning into her toxic father and she doesn't wanna be like her mother so SHE breaks up with him.
Jeronica
I want Jughead to have moment with Jeronica about how he understands that she was obviously manipulated by her parents and she was naive about them. I want him to say 'we both are naive when it comes to our parents, second common thing we have' and they both laugh. And then he softly apologizes her and she is says it's fine while looking at him funny.
I want them to talk about Betty and how she needs help and actually all together they help her.
I want them to be friends and understand they are different but also similar.
FP and Alice
I want them to be a thing in the final episode. When Jughead breaks up with Betty i want them to be a thing. I don’t want the whole ‘my dad is dating with your mom’ thing in this season. I want that to happen in season 3 so that that can use a cliffhanger in the finale that make buggies go crazy lol. A cliffhanger which Alice comes to the trailer and talk about Chic cause he’s FP’s son. And they you know kiss and maybe even more. Than later try to hide it. And Betty and Jughead learn it. The drama they break-up for good.
Cherly and Toni
What can i say they are perfect. I want them to make each other happy, which they started to do already. Cherly shouldn’t be in that house. That’s all i’m saying.
Blackhood
So, a lot of people have talked about this and i agree. I hope the Blackhood was not actually the janitor or if he was i hope he's connected to Hiram some way. I hope he was the one (or Hermonie) who did all of this because crime needs to go up and the prison plan makes sense to people in Riverdale. It would also makes sense cause than Archie would be like 'fuck that i'm out of here'. Goes to Veronica and says let's make up. And she says 'it's too late lol'
Josie and Kevin
I want them apologize to Veronica. You might think Kevin didn't do anything wrong but he was enjoying that drama. And Josie, being a back stabbing lying friend who just being a hypocrite about feminism? She was such a good character earlier what happened?
I want Kevin to find himself a goood man except Chic obviously.
And Josie with Reggie, they would be such little shits but with some decent moral codes pls thx.
Yeah, well that was it. I encourage you to add more cause i'm an idiot i forget, guys.
If you gave your time to read this ilysm 💕

If you haven't received the prompt yet: 001 for Riverdale, 002 for Bughead and 003 for Jughead. I'll give you some new prompts if you've received these already :P
I have not received these, thanks so much!  Let’s go!001 | Riverdale
Favorite character: Jughead, but Betty’s a close second
Least Favorite character:  Of the characters that actually recur, I’d say Hal because ugh.  Hal.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): bughead, choni, varchie, joavin, falice
Character I find most attractive: Toni is the most attractive, but I am personally the most attracted to Jughead, and it distresses and upsets me because.  Because Jughead Jones, what the fuck.
Character I would marry: I would not marry a single one of these disaster people.  I am not capable of the amount of crime required of a Riverdale relationship.
Character I would be best friends with:  Veronica, because she is one cool and nice lady who would cut a bitch for her friends.
a random thought: My favorite way to pitch this show is: a.) there exists an episode with a room full of wigs and it is exactly as weird as it sounds b.) an actual episode description: newly-minted junior gang leader Jughead Jones and future mob associate Archie Andrews drag race the leader of the gang the Ghoulies to get the drug jingle jangle out of the schools and off the streets and it is exactly as weird as it sounds.
An unpopular opinion: I really liked season 2b; it’s my favorite.  It’s like live action Durarara!!, full of crime and darkness and wtfery.  It is exactly to my tastes, and I love it.
my canon OTP: Betty/Jughead, hands down.
Non-canon OTP: This is a rare occasion where I’m on board with all the canon ships, so…Cheryl/Veronica/Toni?  Can I pick an OT3?  Let’s say I can
most badass character: Cheryl.  That girl is stupid competent and terrifying and I love her.
pairing I am not a fan of: B*rchie.  It’s just…not my thing.
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another):  The writers criminally underuse Josie and Kevin.
favourite friendship:  Based on what we’ve seen, Betty and Veronica or Betty and Kevin, but I want more of Jughead and Toni and, in an ideal world, Toni and Betty.
character I want to adopt or be adopted by:  Mary Andrews, who was smart enough to leave that helltown, can be my new mom
002 | bughead
when of if I started shipping it.  I genuinely do not know the exact point, but it was before 1x06.  By that time though, I was in deep and so excited when they kissed.
my thoughts:  Somehow this pushed its way pass almost all my other ships to be my all-time second favorite ship, and I’m still not sure how or why?  Like, they’re super sweet, but also full of crime and willingness to do anything for each other, and I think it’s the last part that gets me, but I’m not 100% on that.
What makes me happy about them: Seriously though, they would do anything for each other, and it is absolutely beautiful.  Also, they have so much in common and are clearly on the same wavelength.  Also also, the way they look at each other oh my god, have you ever seen anything so perfect?
What makes me sad about them:  The idea of unnecessary college-related angst and the possibility of them ever breaking up is DDD:
things done in fanfic that annoys me: When they don’t feel like themselves.  Like, Betty is too sweet without her spine of steel or Jughead is just mean as opposed to grumpy and kind of bitchy.  I’m also not a fan of role reversals for this ship; it just doesn’t feel right.
things I look for in fanfic: mutual pining, especially Jughead’s pining because that boy pines SO GOOD.  Also, crime is always a plus!
My kinks:  oh my god, these two…like, you could sell me on most kinks with these two.  But definitely varying levels of bdsm (preference for switch!bughead), choking/breathplay, knifeplay, edgeplay.  Jughead loving to eat Betty out and getting off on her getting off aren’t kinks, but they are things I very much enjoy.  Same thing goes for his love affair with her shoulder and their mutual tendency to cup each other’s faces.  That wig can choke though.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: hahaha, no.  It would take a different run of the show for that.
My happily ever after for them:  There are only two acceptable outcomes.  1.) Escaping Riverdale and living full lives literally anywhere else. 2.) Staying as co-gang leaders and fighting for the Southside community.  One of them can be a gang lawyer or something, idk.  The point is: crime!
003 | Jughead Jones
How I feel about this character: I love him.  He is so dramatic and full of self-righteousness and devoted to the people and things he cares about.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Betty.  That’s it.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: I love his friendships with Archie and Toni, but I think I’m more interested in the one with Toni at this point. Unless his relationship with his dad counts, then I pick that one.  Might shift to JB once we meet her though.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I loved him cutting off Penny’s tattoo in 2x09.  It was such a great moment of crazy and desperation and a desire to protect.  It weirdly worked too, even if there were serious repercussions later.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:  I want Betty and Jughead to solve a crime by committing one.  I also want to watch FP try to parent his son.
my het ship:Betty/Jughead
my fem/slash ship: Jughead/Sweet Pea
my OTP:  Betty/Jughead
my OT3:  Oh god, I am so bad at this.  Uhh…Betty/Jughead/Veronica?
my cross over ship: Jughead/Mikado Ryuugamine (Durarara!!).  They both seem like such nice young men, but then…
my kink:  See the Betty/Jughead answer, honestly.  But also, is the way he looks at her a kink?  It feels like it should be.
a head cannon fact: Jughead has either been in love with Betty for like 3+ years or since she said she believed him about his dad, there is no inbetween.
my gender bend:  None, really. But girl!Jughead would have the most beautiful hair, much like boy!Jughead.

I finally watched the 4.17/18 god we don't expect nothing of the writers and they still find the way to disappoint us. I think my feelings are related to the fact that while the kiss was something impulsive the sneaking around afterwards wasn't, we'll never know the answer of was Betty was thinking to do ; like god "we cant do this not here" girl she wanted to follow cheating or what? Or admiting that she can't stop thinking about A those moments break my heart; but I must admit that all the +
+episode was Betty who put a limit to Archie: when she rejected Archie "help" in the blue and gold, "we need to make sure if this Is what we want", " isnt we can't do something more" (also I think betty didn’t imply that she wanted to have sex with him btw she said they couldn’t do anything more aka kiss again she was in such a guilty and confused head space i’m sure that was the last thing on her mind) and when she ended the things with him, still dont make her actions better but I think we +
+ still dont make her actions better but I think we should give her that at least. I watched a lot people sharing her thoughs and feelings about this with you and I love how smart, wordy, lovely and and positive u answers is, so the people felt confident with you (and with a lot of bhs on here) of share their feelings even about a storyline of a TV show even on anon specifically since rvd and bh is a escape and distraction for a lot of people
Thanks for the kind words, anon!
Riverdale and Bughead are absolutely an escape right now for many of us and there is nothing wrong with that!  I am sorry that this storyline was so terrible. :(
I have tried hard to understand where Betty was coming from based on the limited emotional development they gave us in 4x18 but many of her actions are still inexplicable to me. I have accepted that much of what happened between Betty and Archie were driven by plot reasons rather than character-based reasons. The point was to scatter the Core Four and then bring Varchie and Bughead back together again after seven years to rebuild. But like if this was all a hypnosis orchestrated plot by Charles and Chic? It would make no sense, but also it would make the most sense lol.
I have also chosen to accept Cheryl’s explanation as being the best explanation as to Betty’s state of mind and actions (i.e. that she got swept up in the fantasy, and felt that this could be her last chance to explore something with Archie before graduating). And I certainly don’t hold the writer’s terrible choices against Betty (or Archie, for that matter, whose actions are just as inexplicable and OOC for me).
anyway, here is a cute bughead gif, anon:

Riverdale’s Mothmen Saga Reveals the True Monsters Among Us
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This Riverdale review contains spoilers.
Riverdale Season 5 Episode 17
“People believe what they want to believe.”
It’s no secret that Riverdale has trouble sticking the landing. With the notable exception of the debut season’s finale, each year has seen the resolution of its respective core mystery solved in an acceptable, yet not entirely satisfying manner. (Please don’t get me started on how things wrapped up with the Gargoyle King).
Alas, this trend has been broken by the latest episode “Dance of Death.” My initial impulse was to balk at how the series once again knocked on the door of allowing a supernatural denouement and ran away when it hit me, having the Truck Stop Killers be related to the Coopers/Blossoms — even tangentially — opens up creative possibilities for the show to try to tackle the impact of grief and generational trauma.
No, seriously.
This isn’t exactly new ground for the series, which has attempted in its own hamfisted way to comment on issues of loss and mourning since the very first episode. With the notable exception of its tribute to Fred Andrews (which tragically was written as a result of Luke Perry’s untimely passing), Riverdale often misses the mark when it tries to be profound.
The most recent example of this are the fifth season’s plotlines about Archie’s ongoing struggles with PTSD and, although it’s mainly danced around, human trafficking with the Truck Stop Killers. There is so much worthwhile to be said about these issues, and in the latter’s case Big Sky handles the subject with respect. But occurring on a series in which characters perform divinations that transform water into maple syrup diminishes the huge weight of these subjects.
Truth be told, this is a problem in which Riverdale faces every time it attempts to mirror real life problems. Think about it this way, what if the series intended for its Jingle Jangle plot to be a serious commentary on the opioid epidemic instead of lightweight entertainment? That would feel wrong, yes? The writers should stick to the glorious bullshit that is Riverdale‘s bread and butter (inexplicable dance numbers, palladium hunts, anachronistic gangs, glamorege eggs, etc) instead of brushing up against reality too much.
Or, better still, using said bullshit to strengthen the characters and storytelling.
Simply put, if Riverdale is going to have the cojones to try to tackle real life issues, it must do so in a way that enlightens and entertains while being true to the show’s own bonkers aesthetic.
Enter “Dance of Death.” A “Betty and Jughead solve a mystery” epic, this installment has the pair discovering that the Truck Stop Killers are actually an inbred offshoot of the Cooper/Blossom family. These murderous yokels embraced the Mothmen mythos to cover their tracks and scare off any potential investigators. And their plan worked, for a while. In the most Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? that this series has ever gotten, Jughead returns to talk to Old Man Dreyfus (John Prowse), in reality the ringleader of the murderous gang who just might have got away with it if it wasn’t for those meddling twentysomethings. It’s all so ridiculous that it takes your mind off of real-life horrors experienced by those society has thrown away that are handled with lip service here.
(A quick aside, the Starkweathers wearing Mothmen armor while attacking Jughead, Betty, Fangs, Tabitha and Toni was the coolest sequence this show has pulled off in ages).
As nice as it is to have stopped the Starkweathers, Betty still has no closure on her sister. So she asks Dreyfus about Polly’s fate. In a moment of humanity he draws her and map and as the episode closes, we see Betty and Alice in hysterics upon discovering Polly’s body in the trunk of a forgotten car in a junkyard. Their worst fears have come true.
With two episodes left this season, the core mystery has been resolved in a satisfying and (mostly) contrivance-free way. As much as I wish that bona fide alien Mothmen were flying around Riverdale, such flights of fantasy remain the domain of the Little Archie and Life with Archie comics — at least for now. With this show the future is anyone’s guess.
Next week’s episode includes performances of material from Next to Normal, the Tony-winning musical that deals with issues of mental health in a haunting way. Incorporating this material into the trauma currently being experienced by the Coopers is inspired. Whether or not it is a successful experiment remains to be seen, so join me back here next week when I’ll doubtlessly have more to say about Riverdale, the real world, and the tenuous storytelling that sometimes connects the two.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Riverdale Rundown
FYI: If you or anyone you know needs help, the National Human Trafficking Hotline is 1-888-373-7888.
Tabitha’s friend and former Chok’lit Shoppe employee Lynette “Squeaky” Fields is an obvious reference to Manson Family associate Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme.
This episode was directed by Penelope Blossom herself, Nathalie Boltt.
R.I.P. Chad Gekko.
The contrivance of the week was how Archie was trapped in a mine fighting for his life and no one thought to call Betty or Jughead.
Veronica must have caught wind of Josie calling her dad a “little bitch” a few weeks back, as she does the same here.
Speaking of Hiram, it is clear that the writers have been making him into a “silly cartoon” of late. The reasoning? So he can come back more villainous than ever. (We see his transformation beginning when he torches the picture of his family). That combined with the fact that the October 6th finale is titled “Riverdale R.I.P.” indicates that his reign of evil might just be getting started. Sigh.
The Starkweather clan’s name is a reference to famed American serial killer Charles Starkweather. His actions were so appalling he was even name-checked in Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
Archie doing his best Captain America impersonation by launching a trash can lid at Chad was amazing.
Where was Reggie at this episode?
Given the variety of fake products that inhabit this show’s universe, it is always strange when a real product placement (in this case, Chime) is featured.
This episode’s use of Wagner’s Flight of the Valkyries during Veronica’s confrontation with Chad was inspired, if a tad cliched.
“Another brush with death to add to your ever-growing list” says Veronica to Archie, tongue firmly planted in cheek.
Any episode in which Dr. Curdle Jr. gets multiple scenes is a quality episode.
Britta Beach (Kyra Leroux) does not originate in the Archie comics, and I wish her coming out story had a bit more time to gestate, but its understandable why it didn’t. What with a million other plots serving main characters happening.
“This religion’s got a little too fringey, even for me,” declares ex-cult member Kevin Keller.
Fangs gets his leg caught in a bear trap and is home for supper. Sepsis must not exist in Riverdale.
This was a huge week for Riverdale shippers, with Varchie, Bughead, and Tangs (or is it Fhoni?) all getting some huge couples moments.
With Kevin leaving the Church of Jason, I again fear that his character will return to seedy hookups and/or being backburnered. Again, Casey Cott and the character both deserve better.
With Cheryl now able to harness the power of Mother Earth herself, will this series finally embrace supernatural happenings in an undeniable way? Archie’s ghost helpers in the mine can be written off as a manifestation of his PTSD. But isn’t it way more interesting if they were actual spirits? Gaia knows the neighboring Greendale is a haven for the otherworldly…

Bughead 6 horror fic
6. I’m infected–stay back.
Kind of pulled a small little plot device from the Afterlife With Archie series, but it’s literally so small that if you blink you’ll miss it.
Feel free to continue sending in some horror prompts! I have 9, 49, and 46 for Bughead and 3, 10, and 18 for Varchie.
Enjooooy. :)
It’s dark outside, which isn’t really all that telling these days. More often than not it’s dark outside. Grey clouds surround them, the sun always looking like it’s about to set. The world finally looks like all those post-apocalyptic video games that she used to play with Archie and Jughead. They would laugh and talk about how if a zombie apocalypse ever happened, they’d be the ones to survive.
Now there were only two of them left and no one was laughing anymore.
Veronica had died early on. It was the “death” that had hurt the most. It was the first time she ever felt real pain, the first time she ever had to hold someone in her arms as she watched the life fade from their eyes.
Then it was Cheryl. Reggie. Kevin. Archie.
One by one they all died. Or not died, not really. It was more like they had become someone else, something else. She remembers the shock she had felt the first time it happened. She had made peace with the fact that her best friend had died, she was ready to accept it. And then suddenly Veronica wasn’t dead anymore. She was writhing around on the floor and when she opened her eyes again, they weren’t hers. It was the when the reality of all of this had finally sunken in.
Betty tries to remember what the sun looks like. She tries to remember the days where they would all hang out together, laughing and joking around about stupid things that didn’t matter. She thinks of Reggie and Archie, always teasing each other about something. She thinks of Veronica and Archie, the perfect couple that they all knew would get married someday. Cheryl and Kevin, their scheming and the way they would swear they hated each other, but everyone knew they were the closest of friends. Their group of friends hadn’t really made sense at all, but it was them.
Now it was just her and Jughead.
Jughead who sits on the floor in a heap, his gun lays next to him and Betty knows that she’ll have to hide it from him sooner or later. He’s covered in a cold sweat, his eyes look sunken in and the dark circles around them already make him look like he’s one of them. He’s shivering and Betty wants so badly to cover him with her jacket.
“You need to get out of here,” he tells her through clenched teeth. “It’s only a matter of time before I… I…”
It’s getting harder for him to finish his sentences and she knows what that means. It means he’s right. There’s only a matter of time before the bite takes over him completely. Her eyes glance over towards his neck, the blood that had been gushing out of it freely is now nearly black.
“I’m not leaving you,” she tells him sternly. “Remember? We made a promise, Juggie. It’s me and you until the end.”
He looks at her brokenly and she tries to hide the tears that begin to gather in her eyes. It felt weird to see Jughead like this. Over the past year, he had become stronger and harder. He wasn’t the lanky boy from high school anymore. He was broad shouldered, muscles replaced his once small arms, and she knew that under his shirt he was just as built. They had to adapt to stay alive and he adapted alright. It felt wrong to see him this way, so defeated and small. She would do anything to go back to the way things used to be.
“No,” he croaks out. “I’m… I’m done, but you…” he coughs, “you can still make it out.”
“Not without you,” she says sternly, kneeling next to him. “Not without you. I won’t leave you, Jughead.”
“Betty,” he says gently. “Please.”
“You’re all I have left,” she finally says, the thought scaring her. Jughead is all that she has now. If she loses him, she loses everything. She’ll be all alone and that scares the absolute hell out of her. It wasn’t so bad when she had him by her side, but now? Now she felt like she would give up completely if she lost him. “You can’t do this to me.”
“I don’t want to become like them,” he whispers. His hand twitches and moves towards the gun that’s next to him. Before he can even do anything, Betty yanks it out of his reach.
“No!” She yells out, furious. “Don’t you dare! You do not get to die on me!”
“I’m dead either way. Once this takes over me, that’s it. I’ll never be the same.”
“Yes, you will,” she tells him. She reaches out, hoping to touch his cheek, but he throws himself backwards, away from her grip.
“I’m infected,” he reminds her. “Stay back.”
“I don’t care.”
Before he can stop her, before he can even think, she throws herself forward and presses her lips against his. She can’t get infected like this, he has to bite her. So she keeps her lips pressed gently against his. They’re clammy and cold and she can taste that familiar metallic smell, but she doesn’t care. She has to do this if she’s going to leave him. She has to give him a reason to fight.
When she pulls away, tears are running down his cheeks and it makes her smile. He’s crying so he can still feel. Her Jughead is still here.
“I’ve wanted you to do that for years,” he admits to her, trying to smile. “And of course you do it when… when it’s too late.”
“It’s not too late.” She stands up, grabbing Jughead’s gun and throwing it over her shoulder by the strap. She grabs his ammunition as well. “I’m going to find a cure, Juggie. I swear to God, I will find a cure and then I will come back for you. I’ll come back for you and for everyone else.”
Jughead smiles at her, but his eyes are starting to glaze over. “I love you, Betty Cooper.”
“Remember that,” she commands. “Remember that you love me. When you finally turn, remember me; remember this moment. Remember that I love you.”
He nods and she can only hope that he means it.
“I’ll come back for you, Jughead. I promise.”
He doesn’t answer this time and as much as she wants to break down and cry, she doesn’t. She knows that by this time tomorrow, he will be one of them. She knows she doesn’t have that much time, but as she walks away from Jughead and out towards the horizon, she remembers that she has something to fight for right now.
This can all be undone, she knows it can. She doesn’t know how, but she does know that there’s one person who might be able to help her; a blonde girl she had met briefly once upon a time, a girl that the town whispered about. Sabrina Spellman. If Betty could find her, then she could end all of this. She could save Jughead and everyone else.
She hears a loud groan and she closes her eyes. It’s getting darker and she knows what that means. It means they’ll be out, waiting for fresh meat.
Out in the distance, she can see a group of them walking towards her. She loads up Jughead’s gun and stands up straighter.
“Alright,” she says to herself. “Let’s do this.”
