It was supposed to be a fun vacation; where you could escape your hectic life in New York. Just a weekend of cocktails and trashy music with your best friends. Instead you wake up on the morning you were supposed to leave with a shiny ring on your finger and a stranger beside you.
Your mother would be so proud of you.
The icing on the cake? You later find out that your new spouse is the heir to a country you have never even heard of. An heir that has been away for the past year, gallivanting around the globe, before they return to take the throne.
You couldn’t have just stayed in your beautiful apartment for the weekend, could you? No. Now you’re on a private jet flying to a country you only just googled. With a person that offered you everything you could ever want.
Pretend to be happily married until they can take the throne and you’ll be rewarded handsomely.
It’s only for a few weeks… nothing bad can happen, right?
Features
This story is 18+; please be aware of this before continuing further.
Reminder that this is a fun, romance focused story. This isn’t about the MC somehow conquering a foreign kingdom. You’ll have to look elsewhere if you’re expecting that (I apologize). Have fun with this modern day royal romance story!
Customizable MC: name, gender, appearance, sexuality, a bit of your background, some vices you may have, and a smattering of other things that’ll crop up as the story continues.
Romance 1 of 5 romance options; 3 of which are gender customizable.
Fall in love with the Royal that the whole world seems to have misunderstood or find happiness with a person that wasn’t expecting love. Or anything in between.
Keep tabs on what’s happening at home. As well as making sure your friends aren’t having too much fun without you. At least until they arrive for the Christmas festival.
Fall in love with the winter landscape of a county you’ve never even seen. Picturesque landscapes dazzling all those that look upon them.
Who will you kiss underneath the mistletoe?
Character Information Under the Cut…
Caleb/Carina Laurent, 28 (M/F)
-The Heir-
The heir to the Kingdom of Andoria and your new spouse. A charming individual that many assume to be a player of some caliber. Of course, you’re the first person to ever actually get close enough to figure out if that’s true. A first hand account of someone they’re not actively trying to sleep with. It’ll be an interesting couple of weeks in the castle.
Jamie Dornan // Margot Robbie
Kendall Pierce, 27 (M/F)
-The Guard-
Head of Security is only one of the many hats that this individual dones; Royal Babysitter is another one that is often fondly used. As Kendall enjoys mother henning their best friend. It’s only a small price to pay to have someone like the heir of Andoria in their life. Is a very warm and generous person to everyone they meet. Although they’re very protective of the Royal Family.
Keith Powers // Kat Graham
Damon/Diana Lewis, 34 (M/F)
-The Council-
The one person that is able to make sense of this mess; something that is desperately needed in a time like this. Their calm approach, and countenance, being the one thing that was desperately needed. It was only as you start to get closer that you start to realize it may be something else that causes you to react in such a way to their presence.
Eric Winter // Elizabeth Hurley
Holly Ellis, 25 (F)
-The Barkeep-
A vibrant individual that is mainly concerned about if she’ll get the next order right. She doesn’t have time to deal with the nonsensical issues that seem to plague the higher ups. Which might just be something that you need in such a time like this. Reminding you of a place that you had left behind but only time will tell how everything will end up going.
Victoria Justice
Ryder Li, 29 (M)
-The Reporter-
With the news of your marriage it was of no surprise that reporters would be flocking the small country of Andoria. You were surprised you hadn’t been completely swarmed when you stepped off the private jet. Ryder is just another face in the crowd, at first, but there’s something different about him. A genuine warmth that seems to set him apart from the rest of the individuals he calls coworkers. Maybe you’ll be able to discover if that’s just surface level.
Manny Jacinto
Notable Side Characters
Alexandra Laurent, 47 (F)
-The Queen-
The current ruler of Andoria; commonly referred to as Lexa within her close circle of trusted advisors and friends. She’s a fairly stoic woman with a heart of a gold. Who absolutely adores her people and her country with everything in her. Only her family, and her need to protect them, comes first. She’s more than welcoming to you but you can’t help but be nervous near her.
Kate Beckinsale (with a little bit of Angelina Jolie)
Kieran Laurent, 12 (M)
-The Sibling-
The younger brother to C and it seems charm runs in the family. With his dimpled smile, mop of curly hair, and warm eyes, you know that Kieran was going to win many of your friends over. His over excited personality definitely meshing with some people in your friend group. It’s a wonder to see C interact with Kieran; turning just as excitable as they see their favorite person in the whole world.
Marilyn Monroe, 28 (F)
-The Best Friend-
No not that Marilyn Monroe, obviously, but you try to tell her that when she’s drunk. Mary has been your friend for a very long time; since birth pretty much. Sticking by your side throughout everything and becoming roommates with you when you first moved to New York City. You now live in your own apartment, and she in hers, but you’ll always remember those chaotic years. And Marilyn makes sure you’ll have new memories to add in the collection.
Greta Scarano
Mulder (M) & Scully (F), 5 and 3
-The Babies-
A beautiful pair of Utonagan siblings, Scully being the more stoic younger sister of Mulder, that absolutely adore being near the Royal Family of Andoria. You will never see two happier dogs then these two when they’re finally allowed to run around the castle grounds; preferably with their human family close by.

Between (Fred Weasley x Slytherin Reader) - Part 2
Tumblr media
PART 1
Synopsis: Y/N Y/L/N never quite understood why all these things always happen to her. Nobody understood why she was put in Slytherin. But in her fifth year at Hogwarts, many things were cleared up. Your parents, your friends and also, that one should not be named, all these things explained the why. Her blood was stained, but she could not disagree more with the philosophies that made it like this. Between blood and love. Y/N had to make a choice.
Warnings: angsty; flirty.
Reader: Female
Words Count: 2.6k
Author's Notes: I'm sorry for taking so long to post this chapter, now I promise I'll try to post a new one every Wednesday. And of course, if you want to be taged in the next chapter, just reblog this! Also, get a little inspiration from The Riot by @ickle-ronniekins, a amazing imagine from a amazing writer.
Finally the vacation was over, Y/N could be one of the few witches from that school who was happy to return to Hogwarts. The girl couldn't stand to spend another day at her home. Her parents had been getting more and more rigid since the Malfoys' visit, what Narcissa said made them think about how they were raising their daughter. And overnight, Y/N was forbidden to talk about her friends who were not pureblood, and along with this rule came some amendments, which included not being able to put pictures of them in her room, or send letters. Family dinners became a must, and at every dinner, there was always a topic about blood responsibilities and how important it was. The girl had been so irritated by her parents' attitudes that even Cedric's death prevented her from starting discussions with them. There were several during the weeks that passed until classes returned.
Y/N will never tidy up her stuff as much as she does now. The girl angrily stuffed her things into the suitcase. The reason was a comment from his cousin about Muggle-borns and how a pureblood wizard could have the courage to marry one. It seemed to Y/N that the frequency of commentary on this sort of thing had increased near her. She put her green scarf inside the suitcase, and then closed it. She had just finished packing all her things, she was ready to leave her home as soon as possible. Only Brownie was missing, her dark brown owl. The girl chose this name because she found the word play between the color of her owl and the food funny, since good, if one thing her owl liked to do was eat. Then Y/N went down the stairs towards the owlery at the bottom of her house, near the greenhouse.
"Where are you going?" Y/N heard her older cousin, Margot, calling. The girl had brown eyes and long, dark blonde hair, all in a very thin and very tall body, and now she was in her seventh year at Hogwarts, Slytherin too. Y/N always thought that her cousin was a bastard daughter of her uncle Hanz. Considering that his uncle had brown hair and his wife, Amelia, was a redhead, but he always preferred not to comment on the matter. "Going to feed the muggles that I hide from you in the basement" Y/N replied sarcastically without even looking at her cousin and went on her way to the owlery. As it was beginning to get dark, any light that was on was easily noticeable, so Y/N couldn't help seeing the stove lights on. The only person who went to that place was Grandma Harriet. And without thinking twice, he changed his course a little and entered the greenhouse. The place had a high rounded glass roof and followed a straight corridor, also made of glass, for at least 20 meters.
- Grandmother? - Y/N asked curiously entering the greenhouse.
- Close to the aconite, honey - A voice came from the bottom of the greenhouse.
Y/N walked to the place where her grandmother kept the aconite. Grandma Harriet was a very superstitious lady, in her granddaughter's opinion, she read The Quibbler a lot. So inside the greenhouse, she had plants to fight any kind of threats, from a huge craving for pumpkin juice, to a dangerous werewolf.
- Grandma, the only werewolf I've ever seen was not exactly what you could call bad people. - Y/N said when the grandmother goes to prune the seedlings of aconite (plant that leaves a tame werewolf).
- Worry is never too much, when will you understand that, Y/N? - Grandma replied without taking her eyes off the plant with a half smile on her face.
Y/N didn't answer anything, just crossed her arms and laughed through her nose.
- You know my love, I noticed that you are more impatient than usual lately - The grandmother said finally looking at her granddaughter.
- Yeah, I believe I am more out of patience than usual - Y/N replied sitting on one of the wooden stools nearby.
- Can you tell me why?
- Isn't it obvious, Grandma? Look how my parents are acting! As if having no muggle in the family makes us better than others! As if muggles were disgusting people! I don't understand, I don't agree, and I'm very, very angry! Damn it, Grandma! One of my best friends was born muggle! - Y/N calmed down and took a breath before speaking. - I'm not like our family, Grandma ... Right? I'm not, right? - She took a deep breath again - I know I'm not, but ... I was put in the Slytherin ... What does that mean?!
Grandma Harriet smiled sweetly, she was, until then, the only Hufflepuff of the family, since the first of her at Hogwarts, when the first Y/L/N was drawn in a house that was not a Slytherin, they practically aborted the girl of the family.
- A very wise man once told me that it is our choices that reveal who we really are, much more than our qualities. You know Y/N, you were drawn in the Slytherin, not because of the blood, but because you are selfish, a little manipulative, you go over everyone to get what you want and you can be quite cold.
- Thank you very much for the part that touches me. - Y/N replied sarcastically.
- Did I say sarcastic? - The two laughed - But you are also ambitious, you are not afraid to take risks, you are a born leader, and we know very well that you have a certain appreciation for breaking the rules. You are not bad, my love, you are by far the most admirable person in this family. You know what your faults are, and knowing that, you choose to go against your own nature, because you know that it is not always the best thing to do. This shows me how amazing you are and you couldn't be in another house.
Y/N couldn't hide the smile that went from ear to ear. That was why Grandma Harriet was the most knowledgeable person in this family.
***
Y/N had been on platform 9 3/4 for a while. She always arrived 20 minutes in advance, she thought it was safer, she didn't want to risk missing the train and not being able to go to school. Then, passing by the station wall, she saw the scene that she loved so much, parents saying goodbye to their children, several owl cages and cats passing by people's legs, first years with sparkles in their eyes. The first year was the part that she liked most of all, it is no wonder that Y/N was a Slytherin monitor. In the sea of black cloaks she managed to spot a short girl with armed hair, she knew exactly who she was. And she didn't think twice before running towards her friend.
- Hermione! - Y/N just screamed out of everyone there.
Hermione looked back to see her friend running with a huge smile on her face. He was happy to see that Y/N had not died during the holidays, as she simply stopped responding to her owls.
- Y/N! Where have you been? Didn't you receive my letters anymore? - Hermione said hugging her friend.
- Oh Mione, you have no idea how things are at home, my parents are still going to kill me smothered - She laughed letting go of her friend.
- Wow, Y/N, is it that bad?
- You have no idea.
The two had continued to talk while searching for the cabin where Harry and Ron were. The boys had come in earlier to get a good cabin. The two found them and sat down together, Y/N on Harry's side and Hermione on Ron's side, facing each other. The trip started as usual, Hermione talking about the new books, Harry very quiet, probably due to the events of last year and Ron? He stuffed himself with chocolate frogs. Y/N was listening to her friend while drinking a pumpkin juice that her grandmother had given her before leaving. It was all very common, until a couple of red-haired boys hurried down the hall and locked themselves in the cabin of the four.
- What is this?! - Ron said very angry because the knocking of the twins on the floor made him drop his chocolates.
- We threw a stink bomb in the cabin of some Slytherin boys - said George.
- And they are not very happy with the result - Completed Fred, now looking at Y/N, well, she was a Slytherin - No offense.
- I'm not offended, most of them deserve it - The girl laughed when she saw 3 huge slytherin boys very angry pass through the corridor.
- You are perfect, you know? - Fred completed smiling at the girl.
"I know," Y/N replied with a wink. Everyone felt something strange in the cabin, and it definitely wasn't the stink of the twins' bomb.
- Did you hear the rumors about the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher? - Said Hermione.
- All I know is that the Ministry has been boiling after Dumbledore since ... - George started to say but did not want to be inconvenient with Harry or Y/N.
- Okay, you can tell what happened, everyone already knows the truth - Harry replied George somewhat dryly.
- Well, I heard that the ministry is going to send someone inside to Hogwarts this time. - Hermione concluded.
- I really hope not, Fudge is not what we can call a sensible person, he just denies the facts! - Y/N replied.
- I agree with you, Y/N, but I don't think Dumbledore would let anyone like that in - Ron replied, placing the last chocolate frog inside.
- That is not in his reach, Ron, as much as he is director, he still reports to the Ministry.
Sometimes Y/N was impressed about how much her friend knew. Not that what she said is absurd, but she speaks so naturally ... The girl was left wondering how breakfast conversations should be at her friend's house.
***
The rest of the way was as usual, unfortunately they had to split up when it was time to sit at the tables. Y/N then sat at the Slytherin table, alone, and in less than 5 minutes a blond boy and his entire troupe sat next to Y/N. The selection started, Y/N was happy to receive the new Slytherin students, especially one girl in particular who reminded her very much of herself. She had Y/H/C hair and Y/H/Cut, the only thing that differentiated Y/N from the girl, were the green eyes that the little one had, Y/N's eyes were Y/E/C, pulled from her mother. The two would easily pass for sisters. The ceremony followed, and it turns out that Hermione was right, Dumbledore introduced the new member of the teaching staff, a short, fat lady dressed in pink, who they discovered was Dolores Umbridge. She worked for the Ministry of Magic. Y/N was not much with the woman's face, she had a bad feeling about her.
At the Gryffindor table the feelings were the same, none of Y/N’s friends had liked the new teacher very much. But the thoughts of one of them were a little further away. Fred couldn't stop looking at Y/N, the two had been friends for years, ever since the girl entered Hogwarts, but this year, she had something different, she couldn't explain what it was.
- She will end up thinking that you will curse her if you continue to look at her like that, Fred - said George taking a piece of chicken.
- What? I ... Ah, I can't say, she is different this year, George - He finally answered stopping to face the girl and putting food on his plate.
- Yeah, she’s beautiful.
- Yeah ...She is, but that's not it yet. She looks ... distant. We have to do something, brother.
When dinner was over, Y/N was ready to escort her group of first year students to the common room. Leaving the room and heading towards the dungeons, where the Slytherin common room was located, Y/N was guiding the newcomers when Fred and George stopped her halfway.
- Darling, we have something for you - Fred said with a huge smile on his face.
- I think you will have to deliver me later, I'm kind of busy here - Said the girl pointing to the various little faces in front of her.
- How could I not notice before! George, we are facing customers right here - Fred smiled at the children in front of him.
- You are certain, my dear brother.
That said, the twins made as much propaganda as they could about their magic and different sweets, the children heard in wonder about the sweets that the boys talked about. Y/N has always admired how the twins had this gift, of making anything look enchanted. They spoke with passion.
- And I swear, it leaves you with pears to skip class! - George finished saying while Y/N waited.
- Can I take them to the common room now? - Y/N said impatient, or at least trying to pretend her best impatient face.
- Now ... You can, we'll give you your gift later. - George said. - Come on, Fred?
- Come on, George - Fred replied. - Ah, I almost forgot! - The redhead said and went to Y/N and kissed her on the cheek. - See you tomorrow, love.
Y/N was a little unresponsive, not what she felt when Fred gave her a simple kiss bye. The children giggled and some whispered things that Y/N couldn't understand. After the beautiful propagation of the Weasley twins, the girl finally took the children to the common room, and told them the password. Entering, the girl watched the faces of the children, it was always incredible to see her reaction when she saw that the windows looked out on the lake. He showed her where the female and male dorms were, and finally sat down in front of the fireplace, her job as a prefect was over.
“A lot of mess?” Y/N heard a familiar voice sit beside her on the couch.
- Not as much as I would like. - she replied, looking into Draco's beautiful gray eyes. - But the most beloved twins at this school did their advertising, and now the first year boys are dying to eat the gum that never ends.
Draco frowned, he didn't like the twins.
- I know you don't like them, Draco, but I do, they are amazing and very talented people - The girl continued to say looking at the friend beside her.
- They think Muggles are like us, Y/N! - Draco said impatiently without looking directly at his friend, stood up. - That's not how your parents raised you! You better than anyone should understand this! - The boy said and left his friend very angry and disappeared from view.
Y/N didn't understand, didn't understand why Draco was so submissive to his parents. The fact that the boy didn't argue with them, even when he didn't agree, drove her crazy. But no one, not even Draco Malfoy, spoke to her like that. The girl didn't wait twice and went up to her dorm, probably angrier than her friend. He lay in bed in anger that night. Who does he think he was to speak that way? Spoiled boy ... Fred would never do such a thing. Wait ...Fred? Since when did she compare Draco to Fred?.

Upcoming DC Movies: Complete Release Calendar
https://ift.tt/3u2VfrU
The DC Extended Universe is in full swing! With a healthy schedule of upcoming DC movies in development, the DCEU isn’t going away anytime soon, and there’s still lots to look forward to.
So, it’s time to take a look at all of the DCEU superhero movies that will be released over the next few years. And trust us, there are a ton of them on the way, and we expect more details will be announced as we go forward. We have all the release dates for every one of ’em right here, as well as official details, the most interesting rumors, and suggestions for further reading where appropriate.
Thanks to HBO Max, Suicide Squad 2 is on schedule for August 2021, with The Batman, Shazam 2, Aquaman 2, and more due in 2022. There’s a bright future for the newly revitalized DCEU movies!
Here’s how this works, because the schedule is getting a little weird. We’re starting with the DCEU movies that officially have release dates attached to them. Then we’ll get into the stuff that we know for 100% certain is in development, but that don’t have release dates yet. Then we’ll get into some of the long shots, the projects that are announced but quiet or seemingly dead, at the bottom.
Keep in mind that many of these are the CURRENT release dates as of this update, and all of these are subject to change. We’ll keep updating this with more information as we get it…
Our first trailer. Warning: gore & adult language & supervillains & adventure & heart. Can't wait to see it in a theater with all of you on August 6. #TheSuicideSquad pic.twitter.com/HdqlGVP0lB

David Ayer going to be too busy with other projects until further notice, and none other than James Gunn (of Guardians of the Galaxy fame) has stepped in to write and direct Suicide Squad 2. This is now called The Suicide Squad, which indicates something of a soft reboot, but expect this to remain a DCEU movie.
The cast is positively bonkers.
Returning from the first film we have Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, and of course Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn Scheduling issues forced Will Smith to bow out of the project as Deadshot.
But then that new cast is wild! John Cena is Peacemaker, with Idris Elba as Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian will play Polka Dot Man. Daniela Melchor will play a genderswapped version of Batman villain Ratcatcher…and there’s more, including Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark! We have a full breakdown of the cast right here.
Pandemic be damned, this one arrives on HBO Max AND in theaters simultaneously, so that August release date isn’t going anywhere.
The Batman
March 4, 2022
So, speaking of movies that had their release dates shifted because of the coronavirus pandemic, The Batman recently had to move from June to October of 2021 after its filming was put on hold fairly early on, and now it has had to vacate its October release slot for March of the following year, thanks to the aforementioned Dune reschedule, and also another production halt after star Robert Pattinson was diagnosed with Covid-19. Fortunately, principal photography has wrapped and this is now well on its way to meeting that release date!
The Batman solo movie has Matt Reeves as director. Robert Pattinson is the new Batman. Not only that, this movie will likely kick off a brand new trilogy of Batman movies. Expect a more low-key, detective focused approach to the Dark Knight than we’ve seen in previous movies.

In addition to Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jeffrey Wright will play Commissioner Gordon. Jayme Lawson has a mystery role. Andy Serkis is Alfred Pennyworth. And then there are the villains to contend with! The Batman will feature an all-star rogues’ gallery of villains, with Paul Dano as the Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
DC Super Pets
May 20, 2022
OK, fine, this isn’t a DCEU movie project, and it’s an animated movie. But unless you have no soul, how can you resist Krypto, Streaky, Ace, Comet, and the rest of the amazing super pets? They had better be fighting the Brain Globes of Rambat in this movie, otherwise, we riot.
You can read more about DC Super Pets here.
Black Adam
July 29, 2022
Originally slated to be the villain of Shazam, Black Adam will instead be played by Dwayne Johnson in a solo movie. The character is certainly strong enough to sustain his own movie. Adam Sztykiel (Due Date, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul) is writing with Jaume Collet-Serra set to direct.

Black Adam Powers and Abilities Explained
By Mike Cecchini
This is the kind of thing that could work as a nifty prequel to further flesh out the mystical world of Shazam if they choose to go that route. More importantly, this movie will feature the DCEU introduction of the Justice Society of America, including Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher!
We’re currently on the lookout for more info, but Black Adam is supposed to start filming in early 2021, which seems unlikely at this time because of the global coronavirus pandemic. This film had been scheduled for December of 2021, but lost that date with all of WB’s recent release date shuffles. It’ll happen, it’s just a question of when.
You can read a little more about the Black Adam movie here.
The Flash
Nov. 4, 2022
Andy Muschietti (of Warner Bros’ IT movies) is the latest director to try and get The Flash movie to the screen. This project has had a really rough road. Christina Hodson, who clearly made the studio happy with her Birds of Prey script, is writing.

Crisis On Infinite Earths Confirms DCEU Movies With Ezra Miller Cameo
By Kayti Burt
Ezra Miller will reprise his Justice League role as Barry Allen. Kiersey Clemons is Iris West. Ron Livingston will play Barry’s father, Dr. Henry Allen (replacing Billy Crudup who played the role in Justice League). But here’s where things get crazy…Ben Affleck will return to the role of Batman for this movie. And Michael Keaton will ALSO return to the role of Batman for this movie!
How is this possible? Because it’s based on the DC Comics Flashpoint story, which for the purposes of the movies will be used to create a big screen multiverse. Wow.
Oh, and it that’s not enough, this movie will introduce Supergirl to the DCEU, played by Sarah Calle!
This movie has had an extraordinary amount of trouble getting off the ground, so let’s see if the combination of Muschietti and Hodson keep this one on schedule for that release date. Or any release date. But pre-production is well underway, so it looks like Ezra Miller’s Barry will finally get his day in the sun.
Aquaman 2
Dec. 16, 2022
After it made a billion dollars at the box office, you bet your trident that Aquaman 2 is happening! Right now the plan is for James Wan to remain involved and start developing the movie, but he won’t decide whether or not to direct it until there’s a script in place. Fair enough. Patrick Wilson seems set to return, though, and of course, Jason Momoa will be back.
You can keep up with all our Aquaman 2 news right here.
Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods
June 2, 2023
Shazam 2 is now officially called Shazam: Fury of the Gods and…that’s about all we know about it right now.
One thing is for sure, though, this movie will retain the look, feel, and charm that made the first one so successful, since both director David F. Sandberg and writer Henry Gayden are returning. And this time we’ll have an entire Shazam family to help out!
Wait…did we mention the Sinbad cameo? No, really!
Now, let’s get into the projects that are in the works, but don’t have release dates yet. We’ve grouped these roughly in the order we expect to see them based on how far along they are.
Blue Beetle
There’s a Blue Beetle movie in the works. And unlike the character potentially appearing in the Booster Gold movie (more on that down below), this one would focus on Jaime Reyes, the magical tech powered teenage hero who wields the scarab of original Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) is writing the script, with Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) directing.
There’s no release date yet, but this is scheduled to begin production in fall 2021, so maybe we can pencil in a 2023 release date.
Read more about the Blue Beetle movie here.
Untitled Superman Project
Ta-Nehisi Coates is working on a Superman feature film with J.J. Abrams producing. No other info is currently available, but it appears to be a reboot.
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates told Shadow and Act when the news was announced. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”
Will this continue Henry Cavill’s time in the role, or will it take a new approach? Will this be a completely different take on the Man of Steel altogether? Time will tell!
Zatanna
One of the most powerful magicians in the DC Universe is getting her own film, with a powerful writer attached. Emerald Fennell, who wrote and directed the brilliant Promising Young Woman has signed on to write a Zatanna movie for Warner Bros. No other details are available at this time, but you don’t sign an Oscar hopeful for a movie like this unless you’re serious about getting it moving.
The New Gods
Ava DuVernay will direct a movie based on Jack Kirby‘s New Gods. It’s not clear yet whether this will fit into the continuity of the other DCEU movies, but really, it doesn’t need to. The New Gods is a cosmic story of such incredible scale that there’s no reason to try and connect this to earthbound concerns. Tom King, the DC Comics writer who has made waves with his work on the New Gods-centric (and Eisner Award-winning) Mister Miracle series, is co-writing the screenplay with DuVernay.
The New Gods is the story of two worlds, the warlike Apokolips and the peaceful New Genesis, each populated by immensely powerful beings with fantastic technology. Darkseid is the evil dictator of Apokolips, and he swaps sons with Highfather, the leader of New Genesis, and each child is raised on the opposite world. Darkseid’s son, Orion, becomes a troubled champion of New Genesis, while Highfather’s son (raised by Darkseid) revolts and becomes the super escape artist, Mister Miracle. This barely scratches the surface of what this movie is about. We tried to get into more detail about it here.
The Trench
Aquaman director James Wan and producer Peter Safran are working on developing other corners of Arthur’s world in addition to Aquaman 2. The Trench will focus on the terrifying piranha-like beasts seen briefly in the first film, and will be a smaller-scale, more horror-focused movie, and one that won’t feature any of the main characters from Aquaman. A different approach to superhero movie worldbuilding, for sure. Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald are writing.
Read more about The Trench here.
Supergirl
Oren Uziel is working on a script for a Supergirl movie. It’s not clear what kind of ties this will have to the currently dead Man of Steel franchise, especially given the uncertain state of Henry Cavill’s future as Superman.
But one thing is for sure, the DCEU does have their Supergirl! Sasha Calle will be introduced as Kara in The Flash movie, and presumably she’ll lead this one, as well.
Green Lantern Corps
Fairly or unfairly, Green Lantern has the most working against him. The 2011 film failed to kickstart the DC Universe as planned, and received a lukewarm (at best) critical and box-office reception. There are, of course, ways around this.

New Green Lantern Series Expands Cosmic DC Universe
By Jim Dandy
One way is to simply not make Hal Jordan the central Green Lantern of the movie. Thisone may focus on as many as three Green Lanterns, with the main focus on a kind of buddy/cop movie with John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Geoff Johns is writing the script, but there’s no director in place yet, however Johns should be turning in his script soon and that will allow the director search to kick off in earnest. There’s also the recent announcement of an HBO Max Green Lantern TV show to consider. It remains to be seen what (if any) connection that will have to this movie.
We have more details on the Green Lantern Corps movie right here.
Plastic Man
This one is a little further off in the future as all they’ve done is hire a writer. But there is definitely a Plastic Man movie in the works, with Amanda Idoko (ABC’s The Mayor) working on a screenplay. We have some more details on it right here.
Blackhawk
Steven Spielberg has long wanted to make a Blackhawk movie, and he’s finally going to get his wish. And if it was your wish to see Steven Spielberg direct a DC movie, you’re also in luck. David Koepp is writing the screenplay. We have more details on this one here.
Batgirl
Joss Whedon was originally supposed to write, direct, and produce the Batgirl movie, one that was reportedly based on Gail Simone’s recent New 52 take on the character. He has exited the project and now Christina Hodson is writing. There is no director at the time of this writing, and rumor has it that this will be a project set to go direct to HBO Max.
Deathstroke
Joe Manganiello has long been cast as Slade Wilson, known to DC fans as Deathstroke. He even made a cameo in one of the Justice League theatrical post-credits scenes back when that was supposed to set up a Justice League 2 that never happened. But it turns out that the original version of that cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League was meant to set him up as the villain of The Batman solo movie (that is no longer the case),
Deathstroke was also once set to get a solo film, written and directed by The Raid‘s Gareth Evans. Despite Manganiello returning for a brief scene as Deathstroke in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it doesn’t seem likely that his solo film is happening anymore, which is a real shame as he would have been great in the role.
Justice League 2
Justice League 2 isn’t likely to happen at the moment given how the first film underperformed at the box office. It once had a release date, but that long since evaporated. Still, “The Snyder Cut” generated considerable buzz on HBO Max, and featured a teaser scene that was very much meant as a preview for what the director was looking for in his dark vision of Justice League 2.
Nightwing
The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay has been tapped to direct a Nightwing movie. Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) is working on a script. No other details are currently available, and this one doesn’t have a release date yet.
Justice League Dark
At one time this was called Dark Universe, until Universal came along and ruined that name with their failed horror movie shared franchise. This one will feature the supernatural characters from the DC Universe. Characters like Swamp Thing, Demon, Deadman, Zatanna, and even John Constantine.
Guillermo del Toro was attached to this one for quite some time, but had to leave the project. Then it was Doug Liman. Now J.J. Abrams is involved as producer for what will likely be an HBO Max series.
And now for the long shots…projects mentioned, rumored, or that haven’t had any movement in a while.
Man of Steel 2
Never officially announced, with no director or writer ever attached…another solo Superman movie starring Henry Cavill seems pretty unlikely at the moment. Especially considering that Henry Cavill appears to be finished as Superman, there’s an excellent Superman & Lois TV series on the air, and the aforementioned movie in the works from Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Cyborg
OK, to be perfectly honest, the Cyborg movie almost certainly isn’t happening. Ray Fisher made his first (very brief) appearance as Vic Stone/Cyborg in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and played a crucial role in Justice League. At one point he was supposed to feature in The Flash solo movie, too, but it’s not clear if that’s still the case.

Crisis on Infinite Earths Ending Reveals New DC Multiverse
By Mike Cecchini
Basically, though…let’s be completely real: this movie isn’t happening. There hasn’t been any movement on it in years, despite once having been assigned an April 3, 2020 release date. As far as we can tell there has been no additional movement on this movie in years. It’s probably dead. Too bad, since Ray Fisher was great in the role.
Harley Quinn
Yes, there’s also another Harley Quinn movie in development! Well, at least there was at one point. Whether this is a solo project or something else remains to be seen. Keep in mind that while very good, Birds of Prey didn’t set the world on fire at the box office, which means that Warner Bros. might be a little more wary than before about additional solo projects for Harley, even with Margot Robbie’s star power. As for what shape this movie was supposed to take in the first place, your guess is as good as ours!
Gotham City Sirens
David Ayer is looking to direct a Harley Quinn and friends “girl gang” movie. Geneva Robertson-Dworet is writing, with Margot Robbie producing. It’s not clear where this stands on anybody’s priority list these days. Ayer has moved on to other projects, and as mentioned above, Birds of Prey wasn’t quite the financial success that Warner Bros. had hoped for. It’s possible that Gotham City Sirens has been put in a drawer for the time being.
Booster Gold
Flash and Arrow executive producer Greg Berlanti is going to executive produce and possibly direct a Booster Gold movie. Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class) will write the script.

Joker: 6 Actors Who Have Played the Clown Prince of Crime
By David Crow
Early reports described this as a “superhero buddy cop movie” that would involve Blue Beetle. We’ll get you more updates on this as they become available, but keep in mind there hasn’t been any movement on this in a long time, and the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle movie is probably taking priority for the studio.
Deadshot
Warner Bros. knows they have one of the biggest stars in the world already in costume, so they’re reportedly considering a Deadshot solo movie, as well. But with Smith now having left Suicide Squad 2 this project seems like it may not ever materialize. Unless, of course, switching Idris Elba’s role (he was originally intended as Smith’s replacement as Floyd) means they’re keeping the door open for him down the road.
Lobo
The Lobo movie may attempt to be the DCEU movies’ equivalent of Deadpool. Jason Fuchs must have impressed Warner Bros. with his work on Wonder Woman, because he’s on board to write the script for this one. Michael Bay might direct. But with Lobo appearing on Krypton season 2 and a TV series for the character that had once been put into development (but is probably dead), this might be less of a priority for the studio now.
We have some more info on the project here.
Joker & Harley Quinn Movie
At one point there was yet another Joker-centric flick in the works. This one, a Joker and Harley Quinn movie is absolutely part of the DCEU movie continuity would pick up where Suicide Squad left off. There are currently no additional details available on this one, either. This probably won’t happen, however.
Warner Bros. is very happy with how their R-rated, out of continuity Joker movie performed both critically and commercially, and with Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar win, it’s a safe bet that they’re at least quietly hoping to make him their definitive Clown Prince of Crime for the foreseeable future…even though Joker was never intended to be part of the DCEU.
Not to be confused with…
Jared Leto Joker Movie
Honestly, we’re having trouble keeping track of all these, but yes, there was also yet another Joker solo movie in development focusing on Jared Leto’s version of the character in the works at one point. Apparently, this has long been canceled, but we’re keeping it here to be safe for a little longer.

We’ll keep updating this with more information about upcoming DC superhero movies as they get announced and information becomes available.

The Best and Worst Films of 2019.
Tumblr media
We are THREE days away from the Academy Awards and I know this is way overdue, but I made the deadline and have brought the films to watch and avoid that came out last year. We will be counting down from the films that were best all the way down to the worst.
2019 was the best year for film in a long time and I will go down saying I LOVED my top 26, I liked 27-65 and I only disliked/hated four films I saw last year. Overall an excellent year of endings to series, a great year for original films, and we are in for one of the most competitive Academy Awards yet. So here it is, counting down from best to worst, the 69 films I saw in 2019:
Avengers: Endgame - NOW AVAILABLE ON DISNEY+ nominated for 1 Oscar, one of the best films I have ever seen in my life and my current all time favorite comic book film.
Ford v Ferrari - nominated for 4 Oscars including Best Picture. Wow, wow, wow; what a movie, see this movie ASAP. Hands down the BEST performance of Matt Damon’s career, a definite snub for Best Actor, directed by 2017′s Logan’s James Mangold.
Jojo Rabbit - nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress, this film gives you all the feels. Border lining on the edge of offensive, this story is about a little boy growing up in the Nazi Regime learning that everything he loves about Nazi Germany and what he believes about Jews just doesn’t add up.
Marriage Story NETFLIX ORIGINAL - nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress, this cast brings it in this tragic story of marriage and divorce. I’m rooting for my boy Kylo Ren Sunday Night even though I know Joaquin Phoenix is going to win as the Clown Prince of Crime.
Bombshell - nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress (GO MARGOT ROBBIE), this is based on the true story of Roger Ailes’s firing at Fox News due to Gretchen Carlson’s accusations. Robbie gives the performance of her career and Charlize Theron plays a very convincing Megyn Kelly starting the “Me Too” movement.
The Two Popes - NETFLIX ORIGINAL nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. This true story and Netflix original is about Anthony Hopkins portrays Pope Benedict leaving the position and asks the now Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce) to fill his shoes.
Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood - Nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (guaranteed win), and Best Original Screenplay, Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece is LOOSELY based on 60s Hollywood during the time of the Manson Family murders.
The Irishman - NETFLIX ORIGINAL Nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Two Best Supporting Actor Nominees, Scorsese brought it in this four hour Netflix Orginal.
1917 - Nominated for 10 Oscars including guaranteed Best Picture and guaranteed Best Director, 1917 takes place in real time and is shown in two takes. Brilliant cinematography and direction, this is one to see in theaters.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood - Oscar Nominated for Best Supporting Actor, this movie brought me to tears. I grew up with Mr. Rogers and Tom Hanks absolutely kills it in this role.
The King NETFLIX ORIGINAL
Parasite - Nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. This Korean Film has the craziest plot I have ever seen in a movie. See it. You will be blown away.
Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker - Nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Score this was quite the underwhelming finale compared to Endgame, I mean a 42 year buildup and it just did not hit home like it should have. Now they ended the big three’s (Luke, Han, and Leia) arcs very well and FREAKING KYLO REN has become my all-time favorite character. We all need to thank Adam Driver for carrying this trilogy on his back as Rey, Finn, and Poe’s arcs where just meh. I do believe JJ did everything he could do with what he was given with The Last Jedi. All the fan service was amazing and very appreciated like bringing back Wedge, Lando, Han, Young Luke, Young Leia, Red 5, and Palpatine back for last ride. I will be in line at Target at 7am to pick up their exclusive packaged Ultra 4K Bluray and yes, I’ve already started the paperwork on financing the Best Buy exclusive complete Skywalker saga (I’m not joking).
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie NETFLIX ORIGINAL
Honey Boy PRIME ORIGINAL - 2019 was the comeback of Shia LaBeouf’s career. This movie was written by him and loosely based on his life. LaBeouf plays his father and brings the best performance of his career.
The Report PRIME ORIGINAL
Spider-Man: Far From Home
They Shall Not Grow Old NOW AVAILABLE ON HBO
Uncut Gems - Snubbed by the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, the Safdie brothers deliver a masterpiece and the performance of Adam Sandler’s career.
Togo - DISNEY+ ORIGINAL
Frozen II - Nominated for Best Original Song, if it doesn’t win, lets riot.
Knives Out - Nominated for Best Original Screenplay, this Rian Johnson directed film was snubbed from every other category due to everyone remaining pissed off about The Last Jedi.
Toy Story 4 - NOW AVAILABLE ON DISNEY+ Nominated for Best Animated Film and Best Original Song, another underwhelming finale (that no one asked for, because we already got it with Toy Story 3), I still loved this movie and it is well deserved for best animated film but not more deserving than the snubbed Frozen sequel.
Little Women - Nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress, Florence Pugh and the rest of the cast delivered in this reboot and this was a film I thoroughly enjoyed at home.
Richard Jewell - Nominated for Best Supporting Actress
The Peanut Butter Falcon
The Farewell
Harriet - Nominated for 2 Oscars including Best Actress
Klaus - NETFLIX ORIGINAL Nominated for Best Animated Film
Dolemite Is My Name - NETFLIX ORIGINAL Eddie Murphy’s triumphant comeback delivers. Definite snub, this is not the last we will see of Eddie in the coming months with Coming 2 America and Eddie’s much anticipated standup special
Missing Link - NOW AVAILABLE ON HULU Nominated for Best Animated Film
Joker - Leading the Oscars with 11 Nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (guaranteed win), Best Director, Best Cinematography (Guaranteed win), Best Score (guaranteed win); Joaquin Phoenix delivers a career-defining performance (that still does not touch Heath Ledger’s) in a quite underwhelming plot with beautiful cinematography and a masterful score, this movie is turning the tides for the comic-book film genre.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile - NETFLIX ORIGINAL Another gem from Netflix, Zac Efron gives the acting performance of his career as Ted Bundy.
Glass NOW AVAILABLE ON HULU - The final film in the Unbreakable trilogy that no one asked for...yet we didn’t know we wanted. This film was highly anticipated for a sad (yes, tears) ending to same great characters. Glass does not hold a candle to Unbreakable, nor Glass, but it is still loads of fun.
Dark Phoenix - They say they save the best for last...well it X-Men’s case, they don’t. This film was a polished turd with great acting from McAvoy and Sophie Turner.
Murder Mystery - NETFLIX ORIGINAL Oh look, another movie where Adam Sandler went on vacation with his buddies and said “lets get Netflix to pay for a Eurotrip by making a movie,” and then you get Netflix’s Murder Mystery. Looks like they will be paying for another vacation with 2021′s Murder Mystery 2. No, I am not kidding.
Wine Country NETFLIX ORIGINAL- This film had literally all the SNL power women except for Kristen Wiig...I wonder why? JK, horrible...no wonder it went straight to Netflix
Us NOW AVAILABLE ON HULU - The worst and most overrated movie of the year. I was so excited, I went to the theater opening night. What a disappointing follow up to Get Out and a complete waste of time. Do not watch this movie.

HOW TO BE READY FOR SEPTEMBER
AND WHY IT IS THE PERFECT MONTH FOR FRESH STARTS
Tumblr media
Hey! It’s been a long time since I wrote a master post here... And I’m really sorry about that. I had a pretty busy summer and honestly, I wasn’t that inspired. I barely had time to manage my new studygram (btw it would mean the world if you follow me!!).
However, I’m back now, stronger than ever as I got the opportunity to live tons of new experiences this summer... Good and bad. I learned a lot and I’m grateful for everything this period brought to me.
Now, let’s get to the true subject of this post, which is how to get ready for September!
Why September ?
Because September is a month that I personally love since it means that a new school/uni year will start, and I think it’s the best season to try something new or to switch your routine a bit. I’ve always been better at taking new initiatives in September than for the NYE and I noticed that every year I apply the same kind of ritual.
We’re in the middle of August right now and I think it’s the best moment to prepare yourself a bit so you can start September in the best way possible :)
I also think you can link this article to a previous one that I consider super important and you can read it here if you haven’t already done it! :)
Step 1 - Reflect
Take a step back and think about what you did during this last year. If you were at school, think about what you want to get better at, what skills you may want to improve and/or which study method really worked for you and which didn’t.
Think about your current routine and/or the one you have right now and ask yourself if it will be sustainable once you start school, or how you’ll be able to do it whilst going to school every day.
This will let you reflect on what you learned during this year, what you’d like to know more of, and what mistakes you may have made. Be thankful for every experience you have faced, and always remember that experiences make you grow as a person. Don’t criticize yourself, don’t judge, just observe, say « thank you » and use this as a way to become more mature and closer to the person you want to be.
Also, don’t be afraid to be honest with yourself as this “reflection” time will really help you to set up your goals for this new fresh start.
Step 2 - Write down your goals
What do you want to improve? Do you want to start a new routine? Do you want to get rid of a bad habit? Do you want to get better grades in maths?
Write down everything and be as clear as possible. You can also separate each goal by its specificity. I like to make 3 columns, one for each kind of goal :
My new routine goals : ex. Waking up earlier, eating more home cooked meals, doing homework right after going home, etc.
What I want to stop : biting my nails, neglecting maths, etc.
What I need to maintain : day-by-day planning, studying a little every day, actually reading the textbooks, etc.
The most important thing is that your goals have to be achievable. Start slowly but surely!!
Think about how you’re gonna achieve what you want, find new strategies, do some research and/or ask for tips!
You can also start working on your goals right now so it will be easier once school starts. For example, my goals for September are to be able to wake up earlier, going to the gym more often and also trying to do more meditation. In order to achieve that, I’m already changing my routine because I have a lot of free time so I can “test” this routine and see if I’ll be able to stick to it once I start uni again. I’ll then adjust it in function of how it feels :)
Don’t be afraid to dream big!!
Step 3 - Get into the mood
September means a new start, and new starts mean that you’re allowed to change your environment! Here’s my non-exhaustive list about what you can do :
Review some topics that have to be well known for the incoming year. You’re late with the math program? It’s the best time to get in touch with it again! I know it may be super boring but you’ll be much less stressed when you start the year :)
Download apps and/or buy some books that will be useful for the incoming year! Ask to previous year students what helped them and ask for advice ! You may know super useful tips you never thought of!
Upgrade your studyspace/bedroom (check my article about this!) - it’s like buying new workout clothes : it motivates you much more. I remember when I switched my desk and bed I actually wanted to spend all my free time in my bedroom!
Buy new stationery - new planners, pens, agendas, notebooks! Of course, don’t buy tons of useless stuff and make sure you’ll actually use them (even if having 10 super cute notebooks seems really tempting :P )
Make a September playlist!! I always love doing this, most of the time I add happy and motivating songs so they get me in the best mood ever :D
Make your vision/dream board!! This is the most amusing and creative way to help you visualize your goals! Save images/pictures/quotes that you like, and print them or make a collage and make it your new computer wallpaper or hang them in your bedroom. You just have to put it in a place where you’ll be able to see it every day!! By doing so, you’ll actually wake up every morning seeing your dream board and you’ll start the day feeling more inspired !
Talking about inspiration, I think September is a good moment to get rid of toxic stimulations. We may not notice it but most of us tend to spend a lot of time on social media. I don’t know you but I had a period in my life where I just woke up in the morning and the first thing I would do was checking Instagram and most of the time I fell so upset about my life when I was seeing all the “dreamy” pictures taken by “influencers”. It made me feel so bad that one day I decided to unfollow all these pages that made me feel like crap. For each page/person that you follow on social media, try to ask yourself if it actually inspires you or it just makes you feel bad/anxious about yourself. Unfollow every page that doesn’t bring you anything positive or that is not helping you get motivated. Follow instead pages that support the same things as you and that inspire you to be the best version of yourself!!! Remember P-O-S-I-T-I-V-I-T-Y is the key to success :)
Start a bujo, and plan your year ahead. Write down all due dates, exam dates, vacations and everything you want! Make reading lists, movie lists, new recipes, challenges, etc. I find it to be so practical and also creative.
Start a new TV show! Since I started this studyblr I discovered Gilmore Girls and I absolutely love it!! It’s really relaxing to watch and Rory Gilmore is definitely my inspiration character haha. Just remember that watching 3 seasons in a row is a bit anti-productive :P
Get informed about college applications/internships/jobs or everything related to your academic future. It’s always better to be informed soon so you can already prepare yourself.
Start a studyblr/studygram : I found it to be the best source of motivation I’ve ever had. Starting this blog is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!! This community is honestly amazing and I love how supporting and genuine it is! I find it to be so inspiring and you guys share so many great tips!
So that’s it! I know that you may be very upset that school/uni/work starts soon but you can make this new start more fun! Personally, I always get a bit stressed in September because of the all coming deadlines but following these tips always helped me figure out what I need to do or what habits I need to change in order to SLAY this new academic year :D
I hope these tips will help you and that you’ll have a great fresh start on your first day!

Blog tour! Let’s talk a bit about The Last Story of Mina Lee by Nancy Jooyoun Kim
THE LAST STORY OF MINA LEE Author: Nancy Jooyoun Kim ISBN: 9780778310174 Publication Date: September 1, 2020 Publisher: Park Row Books
Tumblr media
THE LAST STORY OF MINA LEE (on sale: September 1, 2020; Park Row Books; Hardcover; $27.99 US/ $34.99 CAN). opens when Margot Lee’s mother, Mina, doesn’t return her calls. It’s a mystery to twenty-six-year-old Margot, until she visits her childhood apartment in Koreatown, Los Angeles, and finds that her mother has suspiciously died. The discovery sends Margot digging through the past, unraveling the tenuous and invisible strings that held together her single mother’s life as a Korean War orphan and an undocumented immigrant, only to realize how little she truly knew about her mother.
Interwoven with Margot's present-day search is Mina's story of her first year in Los Angeles as she navigates the promises and perils of the American myth of reinvention. While she's barely earning a living by stocking shelves at a Korean grocery store, the last thing Mina ever expects is to fall in love. But that love story sets in motion a series of events that have consequences for years to come, leading up to the truth of what happened the night of her death.

Excerpt:
Margot
2014
Margot's final conversation with her mother had seemed so uneventful, so ordinary—another choppy bilingual plod. Half-understandable.
Business was slow again today. Even all the Korean businesses downtown are closing.
What did you eat for dinner?
Everyone is going to Target now, the big stores. It costs the same and it's cleaner.
Margot imagined her brain like a fishing net with the loosest of weaves as she watched the Korean words swim through. She had tried to tighten the net before, but learning another language, especially her mother's tongue, frustrated her. Why didn't her mother learn to speak English?
But that last conversation was two weeks ago. And for the past few days, Margot had only one question on her mind: Why didn't her mother pick up the phone?
****
Since Margot and Miguel had left Portland, the rain had been relentless and wild. Through the windshield wipers and fogged glass, they only caught glimpses of fast food and gas stations, motels and billboards, premium outlets and "family fun centers." Margot’s hands were stiff from clenching the steering wheel. The rain had started an hour ago, right after they had made a pit stop in north Portland to see the famous 31-foot-tall Paul Bunyan sculpture with his cartoonish smile, red-and-white checkered shirt on his barrel chest, his hands resting on top of an upright axe.
Earlier that morning, Margot had stuffed a backpack and a duffel with a week's worth of clothes, picked up Miguel from his apartment with two large suitcases and three houseplants, and merged onto the freeway away from Seattle, driving Miguel down for his big move to Los Angeles. They'd stop in Daly City to spend the night at Miguel's family's house, which would take about ten hours to get to. At the start of the drive, Miguel had been lively, singing along to "Don't Stop Believing" and joking about all the men he would meet in LA. But now, almost four hours into the road trip, Miguel was silent with his forehead in his palm, taking deep breaths as if trying hard not to think about anything at all.
"Everything okay?" Margot asked.
"I'm just thinking about my parents."
"What about your parents?" Margot lowered her foot on the gas.
"Lying to them," he said.
"About why you're really moving down to LA?" The rain splashed down like a waterfall. Miguel had taken a job offer at an accounting firm in a location more conducive to his dreams of working in theatre. For the last two years, they had worked together at a nonprofit for people with disabilities. She was as an administrative assistant; he crunched numbers in finance. She would miss him, but she was happy for him, too. He would finally finish writing his play while honing his acting skills with classes at night. "The theatre classes? The plays that you write? The Grindr account?"
"About it all."
"Do you ever think about telling them?"
"All the time." He sighed. "But it's easier this way."
"Do you think they know?"
"Of course, they do. But..." He brushed his hand through his hair. "Sometimes, agreeing to the same lie is what makes a family family, Margot."
"Ha. Then what do you call people who agree to the same truth?"
"Uh, scientists?"
She laughed, having expected him to say friends. Gripping the wheel, she caught the sign for Salem.
"Do you need to use the bathroom?" she asked.
"I'm okay. We're gonna stop in Eugene, right?"
"Yeah, should be another hour or so."
"I'm kinda hungry." Rustling in his pack on the floor of the backseat, he found an apple, which he rubbed clean with the edge of his shirt. "Want a bite?"
"Not now, thanks."
His teeth crunched into the flesh, the scent cracking through the odor of wet floor mats and warm vents. Margot was struck by a memory of her mother's serene face—the downcast eyes above the high cheekbones, the relaxed mouth—as she peeled an apple with a paring knife, conjuring a continuous ribbon of skin. The resulting spiral held the shape of its former life. As a child, Margot would delicately hold this peel like a small animal in the palm of her hand, this proof that her mother could be a kind of magician, an artist who told an origin story through scraps—this is the skin of a fruit, this is its smell, this is its color.
"I hope the weather clears up soon," Miguel said, interrupting the memory. "It gets pretty narrow and windy for a while. There's a scary point right at the top of California where the road is just zigzagging while you're looking down cliffs. It's like a test to see if you can stay on the road."
"Oh, God,” Margot said. “Let's not talk about it anymore."
As she refocused on the rain-slicked road, the blurred lights, the yellow and white lines like yarn unspooling, Margot thought about her mother who hated driving on the freeway, her mother who no longer answered the phone. Where was her mother?
The windshield wipers squeaked, clearing sheets of rain.
"What about you?" Miguel asked. "Looking forward to seeing your mom? When did you see her last?"
Margot's stomach dropped. "Last Christmas," she said. "Actually, I've been trying to call her for the past few days to let her know, to let her know that we would be coming down." Gripping the wheel, she sighed. "I didn't really want to tell her because I wanted this to be a fun trip, but then I felt bad, so..."
"Is everything okay?"
"She hasn't been answering the phone."
"Hmm." He shifted in his seat. "Maybe her phone battery died?"
"It's a landline. Both landlines—at work and at home."
"Maybe she's on vacation?"
"She never goes on vacation." The windshield fogged, revealing smudges and streaks, past attempts to wipe it clean. She cranked up the air inside.
"Hasn't she ever wanted to go somewhere?"
"Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. I don't know why, but she's always wanted to go there."
"It's a big ol' crack in the ground, Margot. Why wouldn't she want to see it? It's God's crack."
"It's some kind of Korean immigrant rite of passage. National Parks, reasons to wear hats and khaki, stuff like that. It's like America America."
"I bet she's okay,” Miguel said. “Maybe she's just been busier than usual, right? We'll be there soon enough."
"You're probably right. I'll call her again when we stop."
A heaviness expanded inside her chest. She fidgeted with the radio dial but caught only static with an occasional glimpse of a commercial or radio announcer's voice.
Her mother was fine. They would all be fine.
With Miguel in LA, she'd have more reasons to visit now.
The road lay before them like a peel of fruit. The windshield wipers hacked away the rivers that fell from the sky.

The Five (+1) Movies To Catch For the New Year
WOKE! 2020 Film Awards PReviews
by Lucas Avram Cavazos
It is a mighty and yet daunting task this ‘2020 thing’ that is upon us. I think inherently we all know that some things are going to shift, others will change, some will expand and a lot more are likely to im/explode. Despite the factuality of it all, one constant I will always turn to, and recommend to you my lovelies, is cinematherapy. It goes without saying that some upcoming movies, which are either now or soon to be at our local VOS movie theatres, are also about to sweep some awards and with Oscar nominations going live this second week of January, I believe the movies below will soon be water cooler twawk, so me here at A Bitter Life brings you a BCN in VOSE look at the five (PLUS ONE!) films to catch before awards season intensifies.
In fact, it was a rather decent year for some great fare and not such a hodgepodge of Marvel and Disney movies forced down our throats every other week. The film I must start off with on this 2020 Film Awards Preview would be the excellent South Korean film Parasite ####-1/2, unanimously chosen as the winner of this year’s Palme d’ Or at Cannes and easily gracing the top or near-top of most film critic’s lists this year, as well it should. Telling the story of a South Korean family, the Kims, who slowly become interlopers within the confines of the uber-wealthy Park family. Starting off with one of them acting as a tutor, they slowly find a way to fill a need for the Park family, all while acting as non-related good Samaritans…that is until a botched getaway vacation and an underground bunker with a tale to tell reveal themselves and send the two families into a quagmire that must be seen and lived to be believed. (Now playing all over BCN/CAT/ESP)
Next up would be my personal favourite this year, though very closely followed by the aforementioned film! Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ####-1/2 became, at least for myself, a redeeming factor in the oeuvre of Quentin Tarantino after the meh! feelings given off by his last big screen outing a couple of years ago. Taking the tragic, real-life story of the Manson Murders that ended the life of Roman Polanski’s then-wife Sharon Tate, director Tarantino buckles his audience into their seats and sends them into a time zone tunnel to 1969 Los Angeles. One of the things that has always revolved around a Tarantino movie is the element of revenge. Here, we have a different take on a true event, but the concept is widened by the director using actors Brad Pitt, Leonardo di Caprio and even Margot Robbie as conduits of a bygone era that give a peek into a mindset and time that usually must be lived to be remembered. The fact that we, the viewing audience, feel like we were actually there in ’69 and then also given the chance to make up our own mind as to a possible different ending to the Manson family murders is mere evidence of a great director/writer who seamlessly gives us a choose-your-own-adventure saga with superb cameos. Excellent cinema once again. (Soon on DVD/Blu-ray & VOD)
The next big film that has increased the star power and respectability factor of Happy Gilmore, uh I mean, Adam Sandler is the ever-loved and heralded film Uncut Gems ####.  If we have to put some truth to power, it must be noted that part of the film’s appeal is that it is such a New York City film. When you then throw in the elements of a thriller mixed with the Diamond District of Manhattan AND a run-around plot that also includes ballers and entertainers like Kevin Garnett and The Weeknd playing themselves, what you get is a peek into  what feels like a true-life crime show playing out in front of your eyes. Add in the ever-excellent Tilda Swinton and Natasha Lyonne, as well, and even despite the long 2-1/4 hour running time, what you get is Adam Sandler, under the direction of the Safdie brothers and along with the good graces of Netflix (who will also be distributing the film in Europe), becoming the new Comeback Kid. (To be released in BCN/CAT/ESP via Netflix on Jan.31)
While we’re on the subject…Netflix. Whatever your thoughts may be on the streaming site service (and others like it), it goes without saying that VOD services have become the wave of the future. Home cinema and entertainment centres/systems are what make for the latest in silver screen viewing. For the last three-plus years, the world cinema system (not to mention film academies and award outlets) have had to adapt to a new reality few probably ever even thought of before this new digital age. Just a few days ago, perhaps showing a bit of wane after receiving the most nominations, only two actress winners took home trophies, Olivia Colman as The Queen in The Crown and Laura Dern for A Marriage Story, reviewed below. With that said, famed director/ writer/ producer Marty Scorcese decided to go the Netflix route for his (likely) last mafia opus The Irishman ####, detailing the life story and inner workings of the Philly mob, while also detailing intricacies of the Teamster unions, Jimmy Hoffa, the Kennedys and the inner workings of the US mafia and its many minions. Financed by Mexican firm Fabrica de Cine (mad side-eye and furrowed brow) amongst Netflix and other studios for international rights, the production of the film apparently ballooned up to (and some reports even say, well beyond) $160 million. With just under 8€ million reaped at the worldwide box office (taquilla) coffers, it’s fair to say that this film in all its glory should have been edited to a slightly shorter length and intended for movie theatres. It has had a fairly great response by viewers on the streaming site du jour, but even Sandra Bullock garnered hella more viewers with her formulaic thriller Bird Box earlier in the year. As a student and tutor of history, the elements of the film that stood out to me went beyond the impeccable performances, specifically by Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa, but of course De Niro and Pesci as Frank Sheeran and Russell Bufalino, as well, but it was Scorcese’s capturing of that forgotten time around which we find so many Trump supporters harkening to, and it details the trials and tribulations of the working class then…and perhaps, even now. That aside, I abhorred the expensive de-ageing CGI process to make the Italian acting kings look younger…just vile. It was like they suddenly became animated secondary characters from a dropped scene in Spielberg’s Tin Tin film a few years ago…bloody odd for a live-action mafioso epic. Still…Scorcese is the only working director who can capture that essence of a time gone by and dress it in Hollywood’s finest if overly-priced storytelling. Which brings us to the other Netflix gem to catch…but only when emotionally prepared.  (Now streaming on Netflix and select screens)
Marriage Story ####, a.k.a. that likely Oscar-nominated film that will require too many tissue moments, also makes its way to this list. Trust, I can get my heart strings pulled quite easily if the right sentiments abound, so I was non-plussed going into this because I had already heard from my film fest peops that it was a bit of a tearjerker. Undeniably, there is a brutally-displayed realness that envelops the main characters of this film, particularly actresses Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern. Helmed by the wonderful Noah Baumbach, Johansson gives a near-best performance as former teen actress turned TV actress Nicole Barber, who separates from her NYC theatre-directing husband played by Kylo Ren himself, Adam Driver. When she takes a role and moves to LA, along with their child, things become even more real. There is a gutsy bravado that clearly makes itself beyond relevant, as the melancholy yet funny film continues, and I, for one, could hardly keep the sobs at bay with the ending of the film. This is the stuff that ‘rom-drams’ need last their heart, not that paltry shite fed to too many simpletons by Nicholas Sparks. (Now streaming on Netflix and select screens)
Aaaaaaaaand…lastly, Knives Out ####-1/2 rightly fixes itself into a final slot on this list because it is one of those long-lost wonders of vintage cinema…a star-studded quasi-whodunnit with wit and thrills and superb, serio-comedic acting by everyone involved. A mere smattering of those actors would be Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Spanish actress and Golden Globe nominee Ana de Armas, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette and even Don friggin’ Johnson! Following an investigation into the sudden death of famed mystery writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), who had just invited main members of his family to his mansion for his birthday celebration, we see the touches of a perfectly poised ensemble film. Director/writer Rian Johnson has really stepped up to the plate with the best of the new directors and fresh off his box-office behemoth Star Wars: The Last Jedi from a couple of years back, his helming a film like Knives Out really plays his hand heavily in his diversity and directing tenacity. The fact that he also wrote this fine piece of script and dialogue makes him even more worthy of a possible director nod and it goes without saying that the cast is undoubtedly the finest ensemble piece made and released in the last year, and if you’ve been seeking a classic feel of a film with a smart, sharp modern twist, this film will satiate any of those olskie-olskie longings of a nostalgic murder mystery that makes you feel good after you leave the cinema. (Now playing in BCN/CAT/ESP)
