Sketches of all my redone designs for my Phantom Thieves from my AU, Icarus! Lots of info down below on the cut, so if you want to know more about the details and inspiration, feel free to keep reading!

This includes Akechi’s design for his Princely/Robin Hood attire, BEFORE his Icarus attire you might have seen from my other posts! Check out the Icarus AU tag for more info! Icarus has a main focus on Akechi and his relationship to the thieves, but the AU is actually an entire rewrite with new designs, 3rd semester and epilogue/strikers/tactica stories, hence Zenkichi and Sophia’s inclusion.

I decided to include more motifs towards their persona’s and general vibes; and also just my own personal touches haha.

AKIRA - Not much has changed, I really like his design overall. I raised his boots to be like Arsene’s and changed his neck area.

MORGANA - I hate the OG pill shaped head, his new design is based heavily on the shape of Palico’s from Monster Hunter. Added a little more nod to Zorro/His persona motifs and also just made him cuter! Little hamburger headed cat.

RYUJI - I made him a little bulkier and gave some more weight to his outfit overall. I gave him heavier boots and a slightly buffer build to relate back more to his sporty style.

ANN - honestly was never too big on her latex outfit, I wanted to call back to a personal favorite female lead; Christine Daae, and used one of the versions of her Don Juan costume as inspiration. I remember seeing Phantom live and in many stage versions of her character, the Don Juan scene was a pure moment of female control, and she was truly working the Phantom and controlling every movement on the stage. Her presence is commanding, and I thought it was a very fitting tribute to Ann’s character as feminine strength. (I’m absolutely not referring to the movie iteration of Daae btw.)

YUSUKE - I referred to some historical art and legend of Goemon to add more elements of design to his outfit. When I color them, I want to add some really strong pops of color to his clothing to really drive the aesthetics and artistry home.

MAKOTO - Another totally redid outfit, I opted to give her a design which relates back to Popess Joan, and also Anat. I gave her a clawed hand on her right side and an uncovered hand on her left as both a nod to Anat’s hand raised in iconography of her from art history, but also to show the duality of Anat’s title as both a goddess of war, and of love. It also relates to the mythology of Joan and her nature as both a leader and a martyr. I changed her mask to a Venetian Commedia mask as well.

FUTABA - ok. I’ll be honest. I never liked her skin-tight outfit, it just doesn’t match her personality at all. Also, the high tech Egyptian feel never really sold me. I totally understand the tomb thing, but I truthfully think a dungeon/palace which was more like… tech/nerd themed would have been much more “futaba” the inspiration for this new outfit relates back to her persona, the Necromomicon, as well as her nerdy personality, and her affiliation as Alibaba (Ali Baba.) I wanted to go more lovecraftian, long sleeves and patterning designed to look more like lovecraftian tendrils, and big baggy pants and her classic shoes to match. The patterning on her undershirt will resemble a rib cage, both as a reference to her deathly “tomb” iconography, but also to Lovecraftian and Necronomicon lore. I think she matches the description of a nerdy, techie DND dungeon master more than the initial outfit, so that’s the route I took personally.

HARU - relating back to some fashions from 17th c France, where Milady’s story (the three musketeers) takes place, I kept her design relatively similar. I just gave her a little more iconography relating to the three musketeers and that general timeframe.

AKECHI - in his pre-Icarus outfit, I’ve given him a princely sort of outfit befitting of his two faced nature, and edited it to relate to Robin Hood a little more. I tried to keep it sleek and just generally very concealing and layered.

SUMIRE - i gave her some iconography relating back to one of her personas, who is an inference to Freya. I also included some more nods to classic Cinderella, with fantasy gown elements. Overall, relatively similar.

ZENKICHI - again, relatively similar, I really like his outfit. I just opened up the face some to show more personality and spiced up the outfit generally to keep it matching. honestly, les mis/Valjean was a hard one, but I also think his character could be heavily related back to Edmond Dante (Monte Cristo.) so I gave some nods to that as well.

SOPHIA - I turned her into a FINGIE!!!! I made her whole dress as a nod to her persona/to pandora’s tiles around her/the pillars. I wanted to make her small and almost unnatural since she’s an AI, and I thought having a little guy on the team would add some more variation.

hotline 1 character gamer thoughts.. bc i've been thinking abt it a lot. under the cut for convenience :-)

jacket: fighting and racing games, also more "chill" stuff like stardew valley but that's just bc he likes running around and doing fuck all. if he and gf play together, she's managing the farm like she's running the navy and he's just off fishing or running around in circles while digging thru ppl's trash and maybe doing things on gf's behalf if she asks him to. he can fuck you up in most arcade games tho; he particularly loves those light gun ones and he's like scary good at claw machines (which is great bc he can win beard or gf prizes :V)

gf: she and jacket share a lot of the same tastes; esp when it comes to fighting/racing stuff. they're both pretty equally good at fighting stuff (jacket's a little better) but she's way better at racing stuff ironically enough, even tho she doesn't actually know how to drive. also enjoys boomer shooters (jacket likes them too but not rly to play; he enjoys watching her play them tho) and beat 'em ups. also a little more niche but i think she'd also like those types of games where you have to sort things; thinks they're satisfying and helps with her compulsive need to sort things irl

beard: i don't think he's much of a video game person but i think that guy would love any sort of table top game. like i'm convinced he would rlly fw m:tg and dnd, y'k? things that require a lot of thought and maybe theatrics (and also things jacket would very much Not be into but i think he'd go w beard to competitions as like. his moral support lol). video games wise tho, he'd probs like. idk, minesweeper or 2048 LOL something that's just kinda supposed to keep you preoccupied rather than entertained. but also maybe smth like inscryption and buckshot roulette; i think he'd like the style of those and the strategizing aspect (maybe not story so much)

biker: oh this guy would fuck so heavy w typing of the dead. that and shit like guitar hero; i know at heart this jackass has a little bit of nerd in xem no matter how much xe may try to deny it. xe's also into boomer shooters/beat 'em ups/shmups but also xe typically gets tired of them relatively quickly so xyr library is like filled w games of those types that all have like a max of 5 hours on them each; very much does not give a shit abt secrets or any sort of story aspect. can fuck you up in tetris tho, xe'd probs do that shit that doremy does where he places blocks on the beat of the music. also weirdly good at pinball but refuses to admit it

richter: this man has 1000+ hrs on tf2 and almost all of them are on sniper. he spends most of his time on never-ending ctf servers and has gotten accused of being a bot more times than he can count. the only thing that can prove he's not is the fuck all rare unusual he got by accident and australium stock sniper rifle. he does not speak in VC. he does not type in TC. he uses voice commands and taunts only. he can and will single handedly carry your team to victory. you should uber him, and i'm not joking about that at all. he is a man to be feared. he also helps his mom with the sudoku and crossword in the paper every morning.

richard: i think it'd like uhm. weird art games. or i guess, as jacob geller puts it, games that are not games. that and weird/horror/unsettling(?) (j)rpgs. LSD dream emulator, yume nikki, ib, witch's house, who's lila?, IMSCARED, and anything that's sort of... meant to be an experience rather than an actual game (drawing blanks rn but presentable liberty obvs comes to mind). likes to ponder/analyze things and also enjoys things where you gotta fuck around w the files to find out more stuff, it's like a little treasure hunt to it. also think it would like firewatch, both for the story and also bc it likes watching the sunsets in that game.

don juan: boomer shooters also but its mostly the newer stuff that catches her eye; stuff like the new blood boomer shooter trio (ULTRAKILL, dusk, amid evil) and cruelty squad would b right up her alley (and she'd totally be a tryhard about all of them). she also rly likes puzzle games tho! stuff like bubble poppers and tetris/puyo puyo tetris especially, but she can also keep herself occupied for A While just by playing solitaire. oh and minecraft. i think she'd rly like minecraft. terrarria, too, esp either of them modded, i think she'd have a lot of fun w them. def one of those ppl who gets all the minecraft achievements by herself, no cheats, on the hardest difficulty. bc she can, mostly.

rasmus: also not as big a video game person but they can and will crush you at chess (DJ's not as good but they play together sometimes; they specifically go easy on her). not as big a fan of it but they do also enjoy tetris/ppt; they and DJ will play together sometimes and rich will watch that shit like it's coco melon lol. part of me also wants to say they might enjoy desk jockeys? like papers, please and death and taxes (and i guess by extension, things that can enact moral/philosophical quandaries), but also maybe not; i think they usually get a lot more entertainment out of books and cinema/movies than games

C's OC #1

Narul is a 23 year-old slave at the Palace of Labisa, the Great City by the Lake. He is a forestfolk, a person or group of people who have been mutated or altered by the effects of wild or ambient magic. His birth mother was a priestess, his father is a mystery. He was adopted by an enslaved woman as an infant, thus how he ended up in the servitude of King Hutbari. He is a giant of a man, literally, at just a hair under nine feet tall. He is additionally quite bulky, much much larger than even the biggest human. He is so massive that the door into the slave quarters had to be reconstructed just to fit him as he grew up. Aside from his size he is also just a bit rough in appearance, hairy and broad, picture a DnD Dwarf, just sized way up. He is inhumanly strong, a fact that causes him a great deal of distress. Because of his size and strength, Narul has the potential to be quite dangerous to normal humans, as he has been repeatedly reminded of since his childhood. Narul has a great deal of anxiety around his body and his potential to accidently hurt others, as such he is quite timid and careful. He has a tendency to mumble when he talks, which unfortunately due to his low voice, often makes it sound like he is growling. He is a gentle person, he likes flowers and abhors violence. He cries relatively easily and gets easily anxious or overwhelmed.Despite all of this he is fiercely loyal and kind. He doesn’t talk much but loves to listen to others. His fatal flaw is a healthy dose of self-doubt and self-loathing. Narul hates his body, it scares him, and he believes that it scares others. He is often self-deprecating, though not in a joking way. He feels an intense jealousy towards those around him that are able to live normal lives and pursue normal relationships.

C's OC #2

Mikrab is a spiritblood, half-human and half-spirit, a demigod. Mikrab is just over 1450 years old, his body is functionally immortal, though his mind is not. Time and loss has made him apathetic, and his memory has faded with the ages. He does not remember where he comes from, nor his family, he doesn't even remember his birth name, Mikrab is the Knoshic version of his original name (Like Juan vs. John), and his culture and language of origin have since gone extinct. While he does not relish in violence or destruction, he simply does not care if he causes it. He will kill and destroy for the sake of convenience. He wanders the world, not seeking death but also not avoiding it. He is lethargic and cold, save for moments of frustration, often with his predicament. As with all spiritbloods he is massive, though among spiritbloods he is on the short side, only about 7'8, and is a bit more lean in his build compared to the likes of Narul or Batricca. His supernatural strength and durability are what have allowed him to survive so long. Surprisingly, he is quite a skilled linguist and can speak in Kishite, Knoshic, Apunian, Korithian, Arkodian, Ikopeshi, and Namuti.

Katie's OC

Djek Kagura is a young man (19 in the first book, 23 in the second two) with a shifty appearance, red eyes, and a constant squint due to poor vision. He grew up on the streets after his parents tossed him out to cut down on mouths to feed, only to later join the brutal Tunnel Wasp smuggling gang, which he later split from due to his aversion to violence and need to do what's right. As a person, he's always quick with a joke or snide comment, loves sarcasm, and lies like a fish breathes water. His bad habit is that he loves to annoy people on purpose. At his core is a deep sense of self-loathing and abandonment issues, but he covers these with humor. He tends to try to find peaceful solutions to situations and has a bit of a bleeding heart, even if he pretends to be tough. His friends mean the world to him and he's loyal to the point getting himself hurt in fights he can't win. Also, he's surprisingly in touch with people's emotions and always trys to make them feel better, even he does it with a bad joke or by irritating them to action. He has a weak form of sorcery, specializes in shadow magic, and has incorrigibly sticky fingers.

MK's OC

My OC (created by my lovely gf): Nellie is a clone in her mid-twenties, although she’s only been out of the vat for about six months. She’s reasonably tall and pretty skinny, with pale skin, short black hair, and narrow red-and-gold eyes, which she usually hides behind sunglasses. Nellie is a sweet, kind, and empathetic woman who cares very deeply for others and wants to help, to the point where she sometimes struggles to put herself first. She also has a deeply traumatic history of abuse by her genetic donor that still troubles her deeply and gives her struggles with intimacy, as well as an addiction to mindsplit that she’s trying to shake. She longs for a simple, happy life - a good job, a nice place to live, good food, and the chance to live as her true self (Nellie is a trans woman) is all she’s really looking for (and maybe a partner one day if the opportunity arises - she’s met a friend who’s cute but he’s also a clone of Belladonna’s dad so she’s a bit uncertain). Nellie also has empathic magic, although she hasn’t trained it much, which she mostly uses to see how others are feeling and help them where she can.

My OC

Ash Hathaway is a thirteen year old (at the start of Pt1) girl with telepathic powers. She's ambitious to the point of self-destruction, where she wants to try new things just to see where her limits are. Part of it has to do with wanting to prove herself - that she can do it. If someone says she can't do something, she's likely going to go out of her way to do it. She lives in the moment with only some hindsight and no forward thinking. She seeks pleasure and thrill and risk, with no regard to how this could hurt herself or others. Not that she doesn't care about people, but more of she just doesn't recognize danger. She wants nothing more than to expand her powers just to see how far she can go. Despite being able to read minds and feel the emotions of others, she struggles to empathize or understand exactly what she's feeling, usually misinterpreting what others are thinking. Overstimulation and frustration can lead to her seeking ways to avoid her problems and more dangerous behavior. Ash needs to be kept busy - have her do something productive and hands-on, and she will be fine.

Ash and Narul

I think Ash would feel a little conflicted about approaching Narul, considering his size, and she doesn't like feeling physically helpless. However, I think she would, because she also likes risk and after a bit of debate would decide she could use her telepathy to her advantage. Being able to read his thoughts, I think Ash would figure out that he's not a threat, even if she doesn't understand being timid of himself just because he might hurt someone. She does get the fear on some level, since she has done so before herself, but she's always just reassessed how to go about testing her powers. Why limit herself? She may try to teach Narul that. You can't learn if you don't try. Narul I think would be scared that he might hurt her, a child, in the process, so probably wouldn't give in. I think Ash would get his frustration in his own skin, since she's felt that way many times. However, she will never understand not wanting to see what he's capable of. But I think that Narul will ultimately remind Ash of her best friend, Lexi. Jealous easily, cries easily, easily overwhelmed, hates violence...just a million times more reserved than she is. Narul may be jealous that Ash even has a friend group, even if Ash manages to admit most of her friend group was constructed by Lexi. I think they'd be able to connect on some level, but ultimately not understand each other quite well.

Ash and Mikrab

I think Ash and Mikrab could help each other. Ash is always eager to learn more, and through telepathy, could help Mikrab potentially regain some memories. She would love to absorb the knowledge he has, maybe experience what the long life was. However, if he's lost the ability to care, Ash may do this without consent, even if she believes it would ultimately help him. I'm sure she'd sit on it for a while, but in an intense situation, in an attempt to stop him, she'd easily rip into his mind to try and access what he once lost. She wouldn't do anything that deep without consent on impulse, I don't think. Unless we're talking about Ash toward the end of TSP, then I think she would, and in a way she becomes more and more apathetic like Mikrab. So depending on the circumstances, Ash could help Mikrab connect with memory and emotion again as she learns new things and tests her abilities, or Ash's drive to do that will get her severely hurt, killed, or just in a generally bad situation.

Ash and Djek

Djek may intrigue Ash a bit too much. She may be able to sense he's lying, sense him covering pain with humor, etc wonder why, and peak into his mind. May get a bit overwhelmed by the self-loathing thing. She has used humor before to defuse situations, so they have that in common, but she does not exactly covering up her own pain with it. She will try to understand Djek, but her curiosity may get the best of her, and I'm not sure he'll like her experiencing his own self-loathing and calling out every lie he makes. I think they would clash, at least at first. Djek being in touch with emotions naturally would be an interesting comparison. I feel like they'd call each other's feelings out, read each other and make the other one irritated as a result. However, I do think that if they were in A Situation in which they were forced to work together or bond, they could do it. Ash definitely would be interested in Djek's magic, weak or not, and may even encourage him to test his limits.

Ash and Nellie

Ash would probably accidentally sense Nellie is a clone, but she'd also sense she shouldn't reveal that to anyone. Her kind empathetic nature who puts herself last would remind Ash a lot of her friend Gwen. Hearing Nellie has empathetic magic would definitely cause Ash to be curious, and she'd ask her many questions about it. First, she may ask how she could learn to interpret emotions, but also may see if she can help Nellie expand her powers a bit more. Ash also has a bit of a developing addiction to telepathic probes that expand her mind and give her visions but start to take a toll on her - mentally, emotionally, physically. If Nellie is shaking off an addiction, I would hope she manages to convince Ash to stop using the probes. Cannot confirm if it would work or not - it may make Ash get irritated and want to use them more to prove she can do it. That last bit may cause a divide, but I think they'd mostly be interested in the other.

RWBY VTuber Personalities

I heard that yang is going to be joining Ruby soon as a VTuber!!!! And suddenly, the world feels a bit brighter! But, I would like to imagine how other RWBY characters would be like if they began Vtubing.

Weiss: Complains about how childish video games are. Gets obsessively over-invested and restarts after every mistake.

Blake: Also complains about how they are a waste of time. Leaves after 10 minutes but just leaves the stream going (after depositing a shadowclone stand-in).

Yang: BONZAI!!!

Pyrhha: Has never played a video game before in her life. Smashes the Dark Souls II speedrun world record on her first try while apologizing to every monster.

Juane: Nervously tries to act cool, begins to freak out, and just starts talking in his ASMR voice because he has no idea what else to do.

Nora: BRING! IT! ONNNNNNNN! HIYYAAAAAAAA!!!

Ren: Politely says hello. Finishes the Stardew Valley stream without saying anything else. Politely says goodbye.

Cinder: Leads other players to their deaths to loot their bodies, abusively manipulates other players to turn on each other, somehow manages to burn down the villagers in Animal Crossing, and tricks Finland into delcaring war on the Island of Mauritius on livestream.

Neo: Ren + Cinder.

Neon Cat: Most annoying anime reviewer ever. And yet I would be surprisingly open to it.

Watts: Pretends to play a video game while actually hacking the computers of all his viewers (all three of them) and stealing their credit card numbers. Hacks the game to make his skills appear amazing and talks about his own achievements. Because, you know, his ego.

Fox: Literally fighting blind in Smash Bros yet manages to win every match while cracking jokes.

Coco: Queen of Sims. Supersonic princess of Mario Karts. Influencer paragon of VTubers. Scarlet's rival.

Scarlet: King of Sims. Supersonic prince of Sonic Racing. Influencer paragon of VTubers. Coco's rival.

Velvet: Best teammate ever.

Qrow: Worst teammate ever. Livestreams a DnD game. His companions only roll nat 1s. Qrow is abandoned and is yet somehow able to beat the campaign by himself while drunk.

Yatsu: Ren + Juane.

Sun: Abandons all of his teammates in the middle of a quest to go chase after something shiny. All of his teammates die.

Neptune: Acts cool except on water levels.

Ooblek: Speedruns games based on historical events while spouting off how they are all inaccurate.

Port: Somehow manages to make Monster Hunter boring (although truthfully, I don't like violent games like Monster Hunter).

Oscar: Awkward, yet deeply profound, commentaries on anime. Surprisingly knowledable about farming games.

Penny: Lovable goofball capable of breaking speed run records and everyone's hearts.

I realized while writing this that I based most of these on their earlier character traits. Probably because RWBY characters are easier to stereotype earlier in their stories before they gain complexity and development (an intentional decision by CRWBY and a reason why RWBY has such phenomenal character arcs). Idk, what do you all think?

If I were to draw some more mock-up acrylic charms of Ryan with another character this time, who would y'all want it to be?

Atm, I have an idea involving Ryan and Rachel, and another idea involving Ryan and Mia. And since I did four (technically eight but whatever) charm designs last time, I will probably [hopefully] take the top two of this poll for the last two charm designs.

(As usual, I'll explain their potential charm design below the keep reading line)

Catherine Scratch-Patrickson - Thinking of her and Ryan looking cunty af. Just straight up rocking it in some fancy-ass clothing. Maybe they'll hold some glasses of alcohol (and Mike's Hard Lemonade), or they hold guns. Either works :)

Rocko Columbo / Jackie Snow - Thinking about a sort of hurt/comfort charm. Where one side is chill and happy, while the other is, well, the opposite. Either Ryan's hurt and Columbo/Snow is protecting him, or Columbo/Snow see that Ryan has hurt someone with how bloody he looks. Why I put Columbo and Snow together is 'cause uh... this idea could fit either of them lol. I'll probably do an extra poll (but on twitter) if this one gets 1st or 2nd.

Gazz Maloo - I got two thoughts: Either me drawing the two of them in matching leopard suits (from that day Gazz were hanging out with Ryan for quite a while and decided to dress like him), or a "He asked for no pickles >:(" thing with Ryan standing in front of Gazz.

Reid Dankleaf - Thinking of either drawing the Snitchleaf moment (Reid and Ryan got caught by the cops and the two began spewing whatever crime the other does (which could be a lie, or not :])), or draw them as their DnD character (return of fire mage Ryan outfit, and I'll get to draw Reid as a goblin).

Jordan Walker - The two of them happily chatting while at work, both of them a bit dirty due to working on fixing cars. Might make up a new casual outfit for Ryan for this one.

Flop Dugong - Them doing that pose where they glare (tho' in a friendly-ish manner) so hard at eachother that lightning goes between their eyes or whatever. Basically just some sort of rival pose.

Juan Carlos "Flippy" Hernandez - The dap-me-up pose as they wear their racing outfits 💃 That's basically it.

stranger things rewatch details/thoughts pt 3 (s3 ep1-s3 ep8)

-El kept the baby mask from her sister and its up in her room!

- she also has a large poster of a bird on a beach

- the first store when they walk into Starcourt has a very creative name. "Camera Repair"

- the girl behind Max in the movie theater is MAD annoyed at them. they talk (before the movie starts), and she shushes them. they pass snacks, and she shushes them. rude

-the Scoops Ahoy menu sign quite literally calls it an "Ocean of Flavors"

-i wonder if Will remembers much of the events of s2, or at least the possesion/exorcism. it seems to flood back to him in the theater

-ah wait, Yurtle WAS relocated! totally forgot, could've sworn he was a goner.

-poor "lard-ass". hope he's okay

-Hopper's hatred of Mike is too funny I kinda hope it continues, even if he does loosen up

-god Hopper reminds me so much of my dad. he went as him for Halloween a few years back, and I was s3 El :)

-did Dustin follow Steve's advice in getting Suzie? pretend not to care?

-a buck 25 for a scoop of ice cream sounds fantastic

-a lot of cosplayers forget this with "Scoops Ahoy" Robin but the letters on the You Rule/You Suck board are multicolored. red underneath, black traced slightly off. in Graphics that's a technique used to create a 3D effect, and I'd like to think that was her intention bc she seemed that artsy :)

-God I adore how much you can see the amount of love in Hop's eyes when he's watching Joyce help a customer. when will someone look at me like that oml

I’m just going to ask you for this now before I forget but for character Tuesday, do you think you can do Maehara this time 👀

Character Tuesday, Maehara!

I actually started this last night and had to go to work so I was going to finish it later, but then my allergies decided to wake me up at 3:30 and I usually post this at 4 so I figured "why not" and finished it up now and I'm only posting it 40 minutes later than my usual time. Definitely some Maehara vibes for you, lol. Enjoy the ask! Thank you, Hailey for sending it.

1 – Favorite color?

Red, because it's flashy. He doesn't always look the best in it, but I totally see him being the type to get a red convertible for the attention.

2 – Hobbies?

Hanging out at the mall trying to pick up ladies.

3 – What are their strengths?

He knows how to compliment a lady. Trust me, not everyone knows how to legitimately do that. Living in the moment, and able to think quickly on his feet because of it.

4 – What are their weaknesses?

Committment. Long-term anything. I imagine he's the type that has to study all night the night before or he'll start to forget things. Unorganized. (Or as I like to call it, a particularly organized mess on purpose.)

5 – Favorite food(s)?

Junk food. Any of it. I can see his body not being able to keep up after his teen years are over and him going on one of those strict diet and exercise routines and then finally in his 30's being one of those dads that sneaks in a bacon cheeseburger in the middle of the night because it "doesn't count if no one's watching". I see you Maehara. 👀

6 – Least favorite food(s)?

Those protein bars and shakes that taste like chalk or are just plain flavorless. Avoids them like the plague.

7 – What would be their dream job?

Talent scout. What better job than to check out attractive and talented people all day?

8 – What is their DND alignment?

Neutral good. He's a good person at heart and has both lawful and chaotic tendencies. He isn't afraid to stand up for what's right, but he's also not afraid to "bend the rules" a bit either. I imagine Isogai had a large part in the lawful side even existing.

9 – What is their hidden talent?

He's double jointed. He probably showed this off a lot to people when he was younger just to get the "gross!" reaction but when he started liking girls and actively going after them, he hid it. Didn't want them thinking he was gross on the first date. 😉

10 – List a personality quirk of this person.

He's a romantic, in a quirky way. Of course he knows how to sweep a girl off her feet, but he also envisions them in sweet scenarios. If a girl wants to sing, he'll imagine he's backstage at her concert with a boquet, or if the girl is into tennis, he imagines going to all her games and when she wins the championship, their eyes meet despite all the chaos surrounding them. He does this in the moment and it's what makes his conversation during dates so flawlessly perfect. In the singer's case, "you have the voice of an angel. I could only wish to give you a flower worthy of your lips." In the case of the tennis player, "your focus on the ball is astounding. I could only hope to catch even a second of that gaze." But he never tells them about his scenarios. They are secret moments and then he forgets them.

11 – List something strange/weird/unexpected about this character that their loved ones probably don’t know about them.

He has something that belonged to the first girl that ever broke his heart. It's the one thing he never forgets. He'll pull it out of its hiding place if he happens to not have a date on certain holidays and then swears he'll never let someone else hurt him like that again. And then he'll sit there and remember why he fell in love with her.

12 – What is their complex? (Sister, inferiority, etc) Explain.

Don Juan complex, which basically means he desires to have many sexual encounters with people. It specifies with a man wanting to be with many women, but I'm sure it still applies if that man is bisexual.

13 – What is their main sin of the seven deadly ones?

Lust times infinity. Just kidding, kinda.

14 – How would they be as a parent?

Okay, so, because I think he eventually becomes bi and that he also feels that gender is irrelevant, especially in love, it depends on the kid. If the kid is soft spoken and shy, ultimate protective dad. Interrogates anyone who dares date them. Makes the date PROVE they will take care of his baby. Age holds no bounds. He'll do this if his kid's 40. If the child is confident or outspoken and sociable, he constantly gives them advice on how to pick up others. Constantly talks them up and shares dating stories. When the kid's younger, he'll talk about all the wonderful things they'll do, such as dating all the pretty people and how he's gonna have trouble beating them off with a stick. I think he'd do this no matter what. He'd be so lost if his kid ended up being asexual. 😆 He'd be like "who the hell'd you inherit that from?" And then constantly asking questions, trying to understand, and failing to do so.

15 – What is their main love language?

Touch. He's always the first to initiate and it always has more thought behind it than others would expect, but the person's reaction would tell him everything he needs to know about them. It would say they were interested, or not, and he can tell from a single touch, a bump, an accidental brush of their fingers. I think it's why he's been so successful, at least enough to get known for dating a lot of people.

16 – How do they act around a crush?

It goes one of two ways depending on how long he's known them. Less than a week, no different than he would picking up any other girl. If it's someone in 3-E or even Isogai, I think he avoids them. He'd be afraid of getting hurt because they already know too much. He'd fumble his words. Everything would come out wrong. Oh, the angst! He'd say something stupid and go run away to the bathroom and cry about it for being so uncharacteristically uncool. And then he'd convince himself it wouldn't work and move on to the next person. 😅 Poor dude.

17 – How do they act when they are in love?

There are two answers for this.

1. The love he thinks he knows.

He's flying over the moon. He's telling everyone about them. He's bragging about them. Millions and millions of pictures are taken. Spends lots of time with them. Gets into trouble with them. And then the honeymoon stage ends and he moves on and the girls call him out on his committment issues.

2. Real love.

He constantly feels sick. His voice gets caught in his throat. He's weak in the knees. He's nervous. He's scared to touch them or hold their hand, but doesn't want to leave. He's a lost puppy hoping the person will take care of him, and he's loyal in return, never wanting to leave. He's at a loss for words, and the words that come are all jumbled up. He's so in love, he's lovesick all the time. He'd be happy just to be in the same room as them, staring at them. It's so intense it's scary, and he never wants it to stop.

18 – How would they react to a confession of love?

"I know. Wanna go on a date? I'm totally free tonight/right now." 😉 (Says this whether or not he's actually free. It's not often when they approach him instead of vice versa.)

19 – How do they show their love/affection?

He's strikes me as a huge cuddler. I also imagine he's good at displays of affection via gifts like flowers and chocolate or last second vacations where they just take the train without a destination in mind and see what happens, but not on anniversaries or anything. It needs to be random.

20 – What is their idea of a good time?

When he is completely lost in the moment. It doesn't matter what he's doing or who he's with, but the moment needs to overtake any other worries or thoughts holding him back. He needs to be engaged and laughing or screaming or making out or whatever the situation calls for. But any time he's lost in the moment is a good time for him. It's all about living life to the fullest in that second, or minute, or hour. Those moments that seem to last forever are his favorite.

21 – Describe their ideal date.

You know, this is actually the question I'm answering last? 😅 I couldn't really come up with anything unique and I feel like I'm a broken record, but his ideal date is one where he finds a way to wisk both him and his date off into the moment. It'd be filled with lots of sporadic decisions that happen to work out. They pick a destination and end up stopping along the way for something better, and some fancy restaurant ends up with a cancelation and they're able to skip the 2 month reservations and get in at the last second. Anything that just... sweeps him away. That's the ideal date.

22 – How do they handle drama?

By adding to it. I fully see Maehara being the center of drama and unknowingly, or even knowingly, adding to it. It's legitimate. I mean, that thing with Kaho and Seo wasn't really his fault, but it was certainly centered around him. And I don't blame him for being hurt by it, but it's not hard to imagine that there's many scenarios that happen that way in his life, allbeit less brutal, but being a promiscuous loverboy doesn't exactly lead a drama free life. 😅

23 – What is their sexual preference/sexuality?

I've lightly mentioned this in passing before, but I fully believe Maehara is a hypersexual bisexual. I see him preferring women mostly, but after some self reflection, I think he'd be open to men too. I also see him being the "man" in all cases though, which is why I think he'd prefer women. I don't think he'd like being the one that's pursued. Being the pursuer isn't necessarily gender specific, but men tend to be the pursuer more often and as flattering as it is, that's the fun part for him. He has to be the pursuer. He has to be the one that brings the flowers, that picks the date, that works hard to impress the person. It's the fun part for him.

As a sidenote, I do think he'd be willing to try out an open relationship with someone. I don't think it'll work long term though. As far as marriage and settling down, he's monogamous, but I don't see him settling any time soon. No, he strikes me as a guy that's gonna try everything and everyone first. 😉

24 – What is their BDSM tag? (Brat, sub, Master, vanilla, etc)

So this one's kind of hard. I see him being on multiple sides for controller/controllee for different things, but I think this is the best way to explain him. He's a Hunter/Master. Put simply, Masters like controlled environments. Maehara isn't one who follows all the rules, which is distinctly not a Master trait, but he does like things certain ways and anything that deviates can be a turn off, which is a Master trait. Maehara wants to be the pursuer. I can see him wanting to be catered to in certain ways, like slaves take care of Masters. However, he wouldn't want the responsibility of controlling/caring for the slave per se. But in all other aspects, he's very Hunter-ish. Hunters live in the moment, follow carnal instincts, care more about the game than the rules of obtaining it. On a scale of 1 to 10 though, 10 being extreme, he's very light. I'd say 1 or 2 in Master and 3 or 4 in Hunter. Remember, this is more in terms of dynamic. I don't think he's very kinky, but he's explorative, so he'd probably have a lot of fun stories to tell before he settled down.

25 – What is their phobia or greatest fear?

It's a minor fear, but I think it goes along with Isogai's really well. He fears the unlived life. Now that I'm thinking of it, maybe Maehara was affected by the death of Isogai's father just as much. They were best friends growing up, so I'm sure he was close to him, and I've described Isogai's father as a person who loved what he did every waking second. In Isogai's father's case, he loved giving his time and money and love to those in need, especially his family. Perhaps Maehara interpreted it as simply loving life, so he grew to live in the moment. You know, I like this idea, so it is now my new headcanon. Maehara lives in the moment because of the effect Isogai's father had on him. 💙

26 – What is their emotional damage?

This is also not too extreme in my opinion, but it hits deep. That girl that broke his heart is something I think hurts him because she's the one that got away. It was his first love, even though it was so young, and it's shaped who he is in many ways. It's why he's afraid of committment. He's afraid of actually loving someone with all his heart, so he keeps it guarded. It's why I chose to go where I did with the loveydovey questions. The moment he realizes he actually likes someone, it's that "shit just got real" moment and he's terrified it'll end. I think this'll be easily overcome as he ages though, but like I said, it hits deep.

27 – How do they handle emotional pain?

Starts drama, like in that situation with Kaho and Seo. I don't blame him, but he is an active part of the drama. Lol. He's not afraid to call someone out on how they hurt him and he's not afraid to do this in front of other people, so yeah, he starts drama, whether or not that was actually his intention.

28 – How do they handle physical pain?

Like a champ! I think he's one of those tough guys that brushes it off unless there's a cute nurse, then he'd totally blow it out of proportion just to keep her around to nurse him back to health. 😆

29 – What would bring them to kill someone?

Another hard one. In some ways, I think he'd find it easy to do. In others, I don't think he's even capable of it. It all comes down to the moment. Does the moment call for it? Is it necessary? For example, if 3-E didn't love Korosensei at the end, I think he'd be perfectly okay killing him. If he were a soldier in war, he'd have no problem following through. If he's not though, then he wouldn't. I hope that makes sense.

30 – How would they react or change after they’ve killed someone?

Maehara strikes me as the type of guy that lives with no regrets, and with the answer to 29, each situation is different and comes with varying consequences. With that said, I think he'd find himself thinking about it at random and just be stuck in that moment for a while, silently watching it happen all over again. So it would haunt him, but he'd let it go, believe it had to happen, and move on. He wouldn't actually move on though. I think he'd find himself stuck in that moment over and over again throughout the rest of his life, but it wouldn't stop him from living, or at least trying to.

If any of this goes against canon, know that I answered these questions without any major research on Maehara. I think he'd be proud of me for going in unprepared. 😆 Anyway, I hope it doesn't stray too far away from anything. Feel free to let me know!

THE PERMANENT RAIN PRESS INTERVIEW WITH WESLEY MACINNES

Wesley MacInnes can’t stop creating. An actor, musician, writer and director, storytelling has been close to his heart for years and at different stages in his life. This past fall, he starred as Owen Schultz in Netflix’s gritty sci-fi series The Imperfects, and has continued to make music (under Wes Mack) and push his boundaries as an artist.

You've been acting professionally for around 13 years. What initially sparked your passion for the arts and pursuing it as a career?

With acting, it was something that had always been of interest to me, in that I loved film and art in general, but I was more adamant about music from my earliest days. Acting really got a hold on me in university when I dropped a 2nd year quantum mechanics class to take a theatre / acting one. I loved both of those classes but it was the acting one that ended up sparking me to take all the possible theatre classes at UBC as well as getting involved in a bunch of theatre productions and plays while I was there. Being in that world of theatre, paired with my growing love of technical filmmaking really pulled me in.

I loved it tremendously and in an odd bit of life timing, I walked out of my very last university course before graduating, got on the bus, and went downtown where I filmed a single scene and a one line role on The Vampire Diaries which began my career in film. Notably the character was named Peeing Guy #1. So you know he’s cool, right?

You starred as Owen Schultz in the gritty sci-fi drama, The Imperfects. It's always fun to dive into a new character; how did you prepare for this role?

Owen is very near and dear to me, perhaps because I see him quite similar to myself. Most of my prep for Owen was in casting myself deeper into the geekiest parts of my life (of which there are many – playing DND this week!) and letting myself imagine what different versions of myself would concoct as a hero identity, given the chance.

Owen is kind of a geek who LOVES superheroes and is creating his own idea of a superhero. I like that it’s all happening in real time as we meet him. The powers are new. The branded shirt is new. He doesn’t know yet what kind of hero he wants to be so we get to see him grapple with those decisions. And as a guy who has grown up immersed in sci-fi and fantasy, it’s a thought process I’ve already gone through many times. For me, being Owen was just tapping into it.

What was your experience like on-set, and working with the talented cast and crew? Do you have any key memories that you come back to?

I had a lot of fun on this one. Owen was a chance to really play and be improvisational and the team on the show really let me run with it. From exploring Dr. Burke’s lab like a kid in a candy shop, to diving into a comic book laying around at Juan’s, to punching out a painting and losing my sh*t, there was a lot to play with. I really enjoyed pushing the buttons of the core cast, all of whom had a very different relationship with their powers when I met them.

I think one of my favorite moments though was my final scene with Juan / Iñaki.

You share memorable scenes opposite Iñaki Godoy (as Juan Ruiz). What was Iñaki like as a scene partner and person?

As I said… I LOVED it. Iñaki is both a tremendously fun and kind person as well as a deep and versatile actor. We got along great and when it came time to shoot our last scene it felt like something really special happened. On the page I think the scene read as far more heated and confrontational, but the more times we played through it the tone began to change. The scene was all about the paths we’d taken from our childhoods to where we stood that day. It was really vulnerable and getting to push Juan to admit some of what he’d lost along the way felt really important to his arc and to Owen’s identity.

We had a laugh with Dennis Heaton (creator of the show) that Owen was hitting Juan with the “with great power comes great responsibility” speech, which obviously I love. Honestly, it was a great day because we had the time and space to explore something universal to all people going through changes and that, in the end, it shifted from confrontational to something closer to meeting in the middle.

While the show was not renewed for a second season, why would you encourage viewers to tune in?

Alas. Can’t win em all. I think we told a cool, quirky and unique underdog story, and sometimes those can take time to find their full firepower. I wouldn’t count The Imperfects out just yet.

Last year, you starred in Paramount+'s Guilty Party opposite Kate Beckinsale. What did you take away from working on that project?

That was another really fun group of people and a set that encouraged so so so much improv and experimentation, which for me is the dream space as an actor. What I took away from that one is that Kate Beckinsale is a great actor, lovely person, and a total badass BUT that she is cool with me throwing Froot Loops at her head.

You've been acting in the B.C. film industry for years. What can you say about its current state, opportunities, and the range of projects/genres?

It is an everchanging beast to be sure. I think with the rise of streamers there is a ton of opportunity and a lot a of neat shows being made. I think for me more than anything I try not to get overly caught up in the state of industry. I pay attention when it comes to elections and governmental support in the form of financial policy and tax incentives as they are fundamental to film anywhere in the world. However, I try not to zoom in too far into the minutia because I think as an actor or industry member you can get sucked into feeling that the sky is always falling.

I’m happy to be a part of the BC film industry. I love so many of the folks working here and I’m proud of the work we make.

You're also a musician! Tell us about your love for the country genre, and merging it with pop music. Did you always know you wanted to make country music?

I grew up in Alberta (which is surely a hotbed of the genre), and while there are chunks of country music that I’m not wild about, I think the stuff that draws me in is in the warmth and organic side of production, the songwriting that celebrates life in its simplest form, the love of the outdoors and small-town living, and the elements from classic rock that tend to live in country these days. Mix those together and I’m happy either plunking my guitar out at my cabin, or standing up on a big stage.

You have new music coming soon. What details can you share?

My new album will be out in 2023 with a few new singles. It’s a project I started right when the pandemic began and was a totally different process than anything I’d made before. I think adapting leads to good things and I think the songs I’ve made cover the distance between big and loud and tiny and quiet, and will take people on a very cool journey. Happy to be making music.

Tell us about your songwriting process. Where do you find inspiration from, and do you find a lot of value in writing sessions and collaborating with others?

I find the best way for me to write songs is to either make breakfast, shower or drive my car hahaha. I think Spielberg was quoted as saying driving helps him write and I think where that all comes from is that the conscious mind is great at many things but often gets in its own way in art and creativity. I find when I’m doing some other task (like mentioned above) it allows the subconscious mind to take all the musical ingredients I have floating around in my head and make them into some kind of sonic cake. That’s the cake I like to bake. The best ones seem to come out of nowhere like that so my whole thing becomes just dropping everything and capturing them when they show up.

I do love co-writing, be it in music or film. I find it’s a great way to take your own best pieces (as described above) and grow them into something bigger and better while avoid falling into your own traps. Take John Lennon and Paul McCartney. I think you might be able to say that Paul pushes things to be light and poppy and happy, and John pushes for darker and moodier and stranger. On their own they can write great songs, but together those pieces combine and balance out to legendary stuff. Now we can’t all be John and Paul, but I love the process all the same.

Who are some of your favourite bands or musicians? Who have you been listening to recently?

Hmmmmm Props to Harry Styles on a very cool and creative record. Noah Kahan is always making amazing music that I love.

You performed at Harrow Fair in Ontario in September. How great was it to be back performing live?

Oh boy it felt really calming in my soul. Exhilarating body rush, but calming in the soul. For 90 minutes I was right where I needed to be doing just what I love to do. Getting to connect with people like that (who themselves had been also away from live stuff for ages) felt wonderful and like such a breath of fresh air. It was a riot up there.

I’m glad I rehearsed a lot though because man… the cardio is real.

Between acting, directing (being behind the scenes) and making music, have you ever felt more strongly about pursuing one over the others? How do you find a healthy balance?

They live in balance in me. There are definitely days when one feels easier or harder, but the love for both is all from the same place. It’s just making art and telling stories. I just wish I had infinite time to do more and more.

I’m no longer sure that I have a healthy balance hahaha. I try to do what feels good and keeps the car driving forward, which is even a bigger balance between music, acting, writing, directing and honestly living life. I’ll let you know when I have that one all sorted out.

You're from Calgary but are currently based in Vancouver. What are some of your favourite places to visit (whether it is for food and/or an activity) in Vancouver?

Well first I will need to shoutout a few spots in Calgary that are my absolute favorites. Best pizza in that city: Spiros. Best burgers and shakes: Peter’s. I’m missing those both right now and I’m really hungry presently so now they are all I can think about… shoot.

In Vancouver I think one of my very favorite spots is Granville Island. There’s enough food there to sink a ship… they also have the Aquabus which I LOVE and is this cute little trolley boat that bops around the harbour and for like 8 bucks or something you can head out on a quick tour and get across to different downtown spots. Jolly old time.

We know you're a Calgary Flames fan. How long have you been following the team, and who's your all-time favourite Flames player? What's your prediction for the Flames this season?

I sure am. Some of my favorite early memories were watching the Flames play with my parents, and going to games with my dad and later my friends too. Fun fact: when they score, they set off massive fireballs in the rink and it is extremely hot on your face for a second. Just a hoot!

I’ve been a fan since I can remember. Favorite player all time is a bit of a deep cut. Trevor Kidd was their goalie back in the late 90′s and I was a big fan. Went to his goalie school for a couple years. Jarome Iginla is always surely a wonderful one. Great human and player.

As for this season, I’m never much for predictions but here’s hoping we can smoke the Oilers and win it all!

Our signature question: If you could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why?

It’s either chocolate or ‘cosmic time and space travel.’ And I’ll explain why. With chocolate I would be my favorite flavor. However, with 'cosmic time and space travel,’ which I’ve just invented now due to the open-ended nature of the question, I would have a sort of godlike timeless position in the universe and could do and change anything. So, one of those would be great.
