Reacting to Contemporary Comics (Without Context) 3/?
Tumblr media
Back to zero context, but I'm so excited for this anyway
Is Balder's cape and boots blindingly white because he's supposed to be so pure and good? Weak. Boy's engaged to his half-niece, purity is gone I think (I guess that's the Christian perspective though, and he's certainly not that).
I'm pumped though. Spoilers for Thor #3 and my usual comic references
I like that this one has a bit of a recap
Bifrost is broken AGAIN?! I hate to say it, guys, but maybe y'all bought a lemon with this one
It won't happen, but god I hope Balder + Karnilla turns into OT3 and that's how Karnilla and Hela get together
THORI! Thori as the flower girl is perfect! Good job, Thori!
Obnoxious boi, why do you have a bow tie lololol
Arranged marriage. I guess we're forcing this OT3 another way
Tumblr media
Loki is loving this
Loki thank you for mentioning the quasi-incest
Oh wait I'm confusing Tyr and Balder. I thought Balder was already in Hel. I'm still shipping the OT3 though
But Tyr just said "My allegiance belongs to Queen Hela, not my father's mistakes and bastards," which is some utter king shit. If he wasn't trying to kill Loki at the same time, I'd be jumping sides frankly.
The best part about this comic is we are like six pages in and we've already explicitly established that all four brothers hate their dad. We love to see it.
Tumblr media
(I mean, for Thor, mostly. Even if most of his "I hate my dad" is a tantrum about getting his favorite toy hammer taken away.)
"I will slurp you up like a bowl of soup, you miserable bastard! Fenris is having uncle for dinner!" I'm crying. Move over, Loki, your doggie son and grandson are now my favorites.
Oh no the villain's hot. Positively flaming. I'm sorry. I am attracted to her, though.
Oh my god, the bulk of this issue was a fucking flashback
Tumblr media
Oh my god. Thor. What the fuck is this.
Skurge is ace. I don't make the fucking rules
Wait, no. Skurge is a sword lesbian. Ace sword lesbian Skurge
I like Skurge better in this than in Asgardians of the Galaxy. Better than in Ragnarok, too, frankly.
Tumblr media
I... I don't have words. What the fuck is this comic
Tumblr media
HELA'S FUCKING WHOMST???!!!
Did not see that coming
The real reason the bastard showed up at the end of Ragnarok
P.S. hey. Hey, guys. Guess what I found while reshelving the other issues I read last week?
Tumblr media
IT CONTINUES, BABYYY!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2024) #1-4 promo art. New series written by Jason Aaron, art by Joelle Jones (#1, Raphael), Rafael Albuquerque (#2, Michelangelo), Cliff Chiang (#3, Leonardo), and Chris Burnham (#4, Donatello).
A few thoughts, six months ahead:
- Following Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, and Sophie Campbell can't be easy. I'm cautiously optimistic, since Jason Aaron had a great, epic run on Thor (although I didn't care much for his Avengers).
- Having the first four issues focussing on each brother is an interesting choice. Reminds me of the microseries.
- Interesting choice of artists, too. Gotta thank Jamie S. Rich for bringing Joelle Jones to the turtles.

Note
do you have thor reading recs/guides/particular run or era to recommmend to get to know and appreciate the characters?
OOOH YES THANK YOU FOR ASKING
some thor fans and loki fans may disagree with what im gonna say here BUT. i think the run which best encapsulates why i love the character and the universe, as well as having essentially a very long guided tour through some of the most significant points of the thor sub-universe within the larger MU, is jason aaron's huge thor run from 2012 to 2019 (along with everything else happening in the thor universe at that time, covered by al ewing, kieron gillen, and marguerite bennett in a few also very good spinoffs).
this is the series where the God Butcher comes from, where Jane Foster becomes Thor, where loki is canon genderfluid in Agent of Asgard, where thor fights capitalism, and much more. it's not perfect, especially in terms of characterisation when some characters get thrown between their own miniseries and the main run, but it really encapsulates what I love about thor in his comics, and it's the run that, over the course of collecting the five huge paperback collections u can get it in, made me fall in love with this sub-section of the MU
proper reading order under the cut, plus brief explanations of crossover tie-ins and so on. it looks complicated but it's basically just cos marvel loves to re-start with a new #1 every so often to keep sales up, and because i think you should read the accompanying spinoffs. if you don't want to read the excess spinoffs (although agent of asgard is VERY good) just stick to things with 'thor' in the name.
Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #1-17
Loki: Agent of Asgard (2014) #1-5
Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #18-24
then the Original Sin event happens, the Watcher dies and a bunch of secrets are revealed...
Original Sin (2014) #5.1-5.5 (essentially a loki & thor miniseries tie-in, relevant to both series)
and THEN when Original Sin continues, Nick Fury (evil now, don't ask) whispers something into Thor's ear, and Thor drops his hammer on the moon and cannot pick it up! oh no.
Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #25
because the marvel universe never stops having big events, an event called AXIS happens immediately after, and results in a bunch of 'heroes' and 'villains' being 'inverted' - the 'villains' becomes 'heroes' and vice versa. both thor and loki are involved in this, covered in:
Loki: Agent of Asgard (2014) #6-11
and if you're wondering what happened to Angela after that Original Sin tie-in:
Angela: Asgard's Assassin #1-6
Thor (2014) #1-8 and Annual #1
THEN Secret Wars happens, basically 8 month timeskip and the multiverse is ending and another earth is about to crash into the main earth. don't worry about it.
Loki: Agent of Asgard (2014) #12-17
Secret Wars continues, the multiverse died and a new 'Battleworld' is created. basically it's a patchwork of all previous universes held together by Doctor Doom (don't worry about it). Marvel cancelled every single book and everything to turned into battleworld tie-ins:
Thors (2015) #1-4
1602 Witch Hunter Angela (2015) #1-4
... and then everything goes back to normal.
Mighty Thor (2015) #1-6
Angela: Queen of Hel (2015) #1-7
Mighty Thor (2015) #7-14
Unworthy Thor (2016) #1-5
Mighty Thor (2015) #15-22
Generations: Unworthhy Thor & Mighty Thor #1
Mighty Thor (2015) #23, #700-706 (they reverted to legacy numbering, don't worry, you didn't miss 677 issues of the series)
Mighty Thor: At the Gates of Valhalla #1
Thor (2018) #1-11
and then The War of the Realms begins, the big thor-centric crossover which ends the run. the issues of that main series and the concurrent thor series should be read in release order which looks like this:
War of the Realms #1
War of the Realms #2
Thor #12
War of the Realms #3
War of the Realms #4
Thor #13
War of the Realms #5
War of the Realms #6
Thor #14-16
and a concluding epilogue miniseries:
King Thor (2019) #1-4

Thor: Love and Thunder is based on Jason Aaron's Mighty Thor, and some people might like to read the comics a movie is inspired by before watching it, so I read through every single comic Jane Foster has been in since Thor: God of Thunder (2012) to create this reading list. Those are my personal recommendations and this is by no means an ultimate guide! Under the cut is the written list + some extra comments.
This list is accurate as of September 14 2021.
Essential reading is bolded, I considered essential the books where Jane's the main character, important character moments, and events that directly affected the main books. I did my best to order these chronologically!
Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #12, #24: Jason Aaron's first Thor book!
Thor (2014)
Avengers: Ultron Forever, New Avengers: Ultron Forever, Uncanny Avengers: Ultron Forever
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (2015) #7-8
Secret Wars
Thors
Mighty Thor (2016) #1-7
Unbelievable Gwenpool #2: The art style on this one is just delightful.
All-New, All-Different Avengers #1-12: I'm not too fond of this book to be honest, I don't like how she's portrayed here, but it certainly happened.
Vote Loki
Mighty Thor (2016) #8-702: Unfortunately there are not actually 700+ issues of this comic, they just changed how they numbered them at some point.
Civil War II #1-3: Honestly just skip all the Civil War II stuff, especially if you're coming from the movies, I only included it in the list cause it affects ANAD Avengers.
All-New, All-Different Avengers #15: Jane is the focus of this issue, it's my favorite from ANAD Avengers.
Civil War II #4-6
Avengers (2016) #1-8
The Unworthy Thor #4: This book, also by Jason Aaron, happens at the same time as Mighty Thor and while it affects that story, Jane is only in this issue and only in a couple pages.
Doctor Strange (2015) #17, #18
Secret Empire #0
Avengers (2016) #9: This is another Jane-focused issue and it's fantastic, I think it's a really key character moment.
Secret Empire #9, #10
Generations: The Unworthy Thor & The Mighty Thor
Avengers (2016) #11, #672-674
Champions (2016) #13-15
Doctor Strange (2015) #381
Avengers (2016) #675-690
Mighty Thor (2016) #703-706
Mighty Thor: At the Gates of Valhalla
Thor (2018) #1, #8, #9, #11: Odinson takes back the mantle of Thor and Jane becomes a secondary character, however there are still some cool character moments.
War of the Realms
Thor (2018) #14-15
War of the Realms Omega
Thor (2018) #16
Valkyrie: Jane Foster
King Thor #4
Incoming!
Thor (2020) #10-13
King in Black: Return of the Valkyries
The Mighty Valkyries
Avengers (2018) #40-44
Thor (2020) #16
Thor & Loki: Double Trouble #3-4
Thor: The Worthy [C Story]

What do you think of the way "Immortal Hulk" works as a continuation of the theme of El Sombra ?
(I'm linking to my series of posts called "Downfall of a Dark Avenger" on Al Ewing's El Sombra, and it's eventual relation to Naoki Urasawa's Pluto, here to provide context: 1, 2, 3)
(Spoilers for Immortal Hulk and the El Sombra trilogy, and also Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto)
Tumblr media
I don't think "Immortal Hulk" is a straight-up continuation on the El Sombra trilogy or that it exists in reference to it, at least not in the way it exists in reference to the entirety of Hulk's existence as a character. But every writer, every artist, every creator, ends up cycling and recycling ideas and themes that speak to something deeper about their perception of the world. I'm thinking about this piece Kieron Gillen wrote on issue #5 of DIE, where he talks about a pet theory of his that every writer at heart has one true genre, or mode:
I'm a fantasy writer. I tweak reality into explicit unreality to better talk about reality. It's my major mode.
This is one of my pet theories - as in, while everyone is flexible, most writers have a core genre they gravitate towards. Brubaker is at heart a crime writer, as is Bendis. Ellis is a science fiction writer. Remender is too - though the lurid pulp side of it. The tell is "what does this writer do when they're doing a creator-owned book?".
As in, if you remember the limitations of the two main superhero universes, what comic do they write? It's for this reason that despite all his wonderful work on Thor and Conan, I think of Jason Aaron as a crime writer.
I think there's some truth to this, although I think "mode" is a better way to put it than "core genre", and while I wouldn't be able to pin-point exactly what would be Al Ewing's, when it was time for him to really say his piece on the foremost Monster Superhero of comics, a character defined first and foremost by a mind-shattering duality and their transformations into beings of unimaginable violence, righteous vengeance and unfathomable power, to rectify the wrongs of the world even at the damnation of their own soul?
Whether intentionally or not, he was bound to create a connection to a previous time he created a character who fit that description to a T, even putting aside all the times Ewing frames El Sombra as hellish in ways that would later echo in Immortal Hulk. Even the respective character arcs for El Sombra and Hulk:
Initially docile men with troubled family backgrounds (Diego, Bruce Banner), being reshaped by tragedy (The Nazi invasion of El Pacito, Banner’s childhood) and traumatizing memories related to said families (Diego’s brother cursing him on his dying breath, everything with Brian Banner),
Tumblr media
and following encounters with supernatural forces (The Desert, The Gamma Bomb), reshaped their fractured selves into fantastic, unkillable, horrifying beings of calamitous vengeance (El Sombra, The Hulk) set loose upon the evils of the world,
Tumblr media
and even despite the righteousness of their cause and how vile their targets are, they also undertake experiences that show us the readers the toll this has taken on their souls, and their surroundings,
Tumblr media
while frequently encountering characters with varied stances on what they’re doing, as well as malevolent counterparts working at the behest of their enemies (The Blood-Spider, Xenmu), and ultimately encounters with forces bigger and scarier than even themselves (Lars Lomax / The Leopard Men, The Leader / The One Below All),
Tumblr media
on their quest to defeat for good the ultimate evil in their lives that are to blame for their creation (Hitler, Brian Banner / The One Below All), but ultimately, their missions don’t end the way they expected, as suddenly all their mighty vengeance and righteousness falls short (El Sombra finds Hitler a dead brain and thus his life’s purpose stripped away by natural causes, the Hulks don’t get the answers from The One Below/Above All that they needed to put an end to their eternal suffering), and then they eventually make a decision that eventually causes a breakthrough in clarity:
Tumblr media
El Sombra mindlessly attacks the Leopard Man while wailing that he wants Hitler to be revived so he can kill him, and so devoid of purpose and unwilling/unable to find a new one, he’s given a new life as a brain in the ultimate death machine, a life he embraces without reservation, to achieve his final purpose in the cosmic tapestry of the work as Pluto The King of Robots. Savage Hulk chooses to forgive The Leader in spite of all that he’s done to hurt them, choosing to try and break the cycle of violence between the Hulks and the Banner-Sterns families, while Joe makes amends with Jackie, and this causes Banner to walk out with a newfound resolution.
There’s also points of comparison you can also draw between these two, and Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto, and I actually believe that the latter is more likely to have been on Ewing’s mind at some point. But in short, with all these similarities I listed, the main difference between El Sombra and Immortal Hulk, the difference that the entire story for these two hinges on, to borrow terms from the story itself, is that El Sombra / Pluto uitimately chose this,
Tumblr media
where as Hulk (and Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto, at the very end) chose this.

A Fan-%#&#$-tastically Good Story
A Reading Guide to Marvel Comics’ Loki
Tumblr media
This is an updated version of an old post that was getting a little unwieldy to edit. Same caveat as the original post: this isn’t every appearance of Loki in the last fifteen years, but it’s pretty dang close! I’ve tried to focus on trade paperbacks with the most commonly listed author, to make it easy for people to find them.
Part 1: 2007-2015
Tumblr media
Thor by J. Michael Straczynski (volumes 1-3)
Thor, now king of Asgard and wielding the Odinforce, is returned from the void after Ragnarok. He decides to bring back the rest of the Asgardians and establish a new Asgard floating above Broxton, Oklahoma, but Loki has plans of his own –  or rather, her own.
There’s a lot in these, but particularly there’s a good amount of time devoted to Loki’s origin and how he came to be adopted by Odin. I highly recommend these! They’re quite good, and if you’re new to the Marvel Comics universe (if you’re coming from the cinematic universe, for example) it’ll give you a good idea of who the characters are and how they fit into this world.
Tumblr media
Thor by Kieron Gillen (Complete Collection) and Siege by Brian Michael Bendis
With the help of Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers, Loki works to bring new Asgard crashing down – but the heroes bring chaos that not even Loki is prepared for.
Thor: The World Eaters by Matt Fraction
In the wake of the siege of Asgard, Thor misses his brother. Oh, and Galactus wants to eat Earth or something.
These are transitional, and there’s a lot less focus on Loki overall, but I still recommend them. Siege is a big Avengers crossover event, Gillen’s book and Siege contain the end of Old Loki, and World Eaters contains the beginning of Kid Loki. If you want to skip them, the next entry in this series will recap them.
Tumblr media
Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen
The complete(ish) adventures of Kid Loki. The old Loki is dead and in his place is a new Loki: a child with no memories of his predecessor’s evil. But Asgard doesn’t trust him, and old Loki left behind plenty of schemes. Some crimes can never be forgiven.
If you want these in paperback and you can afford it, there is a pair of lovely and sadly out-of-print omnibus books, but for the rest of us peasants, there are five volumes to keep track of:
Journey Into Mystery: Fear Itself
Journey Into Mystery: Fear Itself Fallout
Journey Into Mystery: The Terrorism Myth
Journey Into Mystery: The Manchester Gods
The Mighty Thor / Journey Into Mystery: Everything Burns
Tie-ins:
The Mighty Thor by Matt Fraction (volumes 1-3) -- While Loki and Leah are doing their own thing in Journey into Mystery, Loki’s having some adventures with Thor on the side, as well. If you want to read about them, this is where to find them.
Tumblr media
Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen
Loki schemes to manipulate a bunch of teenage superheroes into helping him regain his full power as the group is pursued across the multiverse by the sinister Mother: an extradimensional entity invisible to adults, who manifests as murderous doppelgangers of the teenagers’ parents.
At least digitally, these are available now as a single collection: Young Avengers by Gillen & Mckelvie: The Complete Collection (But one comic didn’t look that great so... enjoy the original three trade paperbacks -- the full collection has the same cover as the last volume, sans volume title.)
Tie-ins:
A+X 005 (collected in Marvel A+X TPB: Equals Awesome) -- Directly before the events of Young Avengers, Loki appears in issue 5 of Marvel’s one-shot crossover series A+X, in a teamup (of sorts) with Mister Sinister. I can’t find the trade paperback anywhere, but it’s just a one-shot side story and he only appears in the one issue, so unless you’re really invested in finding out the fate of Doom’s Loki clones from Siege or you want to read the rest of the Avengers/X-men teamups in the book, you can skip this.
Tumblr media
Loki: Agent of Asgard by Al Ewing
Loki makes a deal with the All-Mother of Asgard: for every mission he takes on for them, they will strike one of old Loki’s crimes from the books. Since the old Loki was reborn when Thor called the Asgardians back from the void, he has been scheming and struggling against the vicious cycles of his past. Loki has done terrible things to become the god he is today -- and now he is determined to wrest back control of his destiny and write his own story at last.
Or die trying... again.
Original Sin: Thor & Loki -- The Tenth Realm by Jason Aaron and Al Ewing
Loki takes a break from dealing with the All-Mother’s missions to accompany Thor on a mission to the sealed-off tenth realm to find their long-lost sister.
These are available as a single complete collection digitally (Loki: Agent Of Asgard - The Complete Collection), and I highly recommend it, as it also contains the relevant parts of the elusive Marvel Now! Point One 001 one-shot prequel comic (without which, the beginning of Agent of Asgard is rather abrupt.) Otherwise, if you want the three original volumes, don’t skip Original Sin -- it’s not recapped in Agent of Asgard, and without it the transition from volume 1 to 2 is very confusing. Think of it as volume 1.5.
Tie-ins:
Ms. Marvel 012 (Collected in Ms. Marvel Vol. 3: Crushed by G. Willow Wilson) -- (Takes place before Original Sin.) Loki makes some mischief in Kamala’s neighborhood -- and her love life! -- in the Valentine’s Day issue of Ms. Marvel. One-shot, can be safely skipped.
Avengers & X-Men: Axis by Rick Rumender -- The full Axis alignment-swap event. Relevant parts are included in the trade paperbacks for Agent of Asgard, but there’s more Loki content in the full event! It can be safely skipped.
Angela: Asgard’s Assassin (Collected in Angela: Asgard's Assassin Vol. 1: Priceless by Kieron Gillen) -- Loki has a brief part trying to help Thor hunt down their sisters when Angela steals Odin and Freyja’s new baby daughter, Laussa. Recommended if you liked Angela from Original Sin and/or if you’ve enjoyed the rest of Kieron Gillen’s work so far. If you’re just here for Loki, you can safely skip it, he ducks out of the adventure pretty early.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl 007-008 (Collected in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Volume 2: Squirrel You Know It’s True by Ryan North) -- Somewhere between the end of Axis and the end of Agent of Asgard, Loki helps Squirrel Girl trap Ratatoskr, the wicked squirrel-god of gossip – never mind that he’s kind of the one that let her out to begin with! While you can skip this one, I actually really recommend reading it unless you’re super not into SG. Loki gets a fair few more little teamups with her (including some that span multiple issues), Thors appear (in both Worthy and Unworthy flavors), and Ratatoskr stays relevant. It’s pretty easy to find single issues digitally if you don’t want the whole tbp. (Loki appears in the second half, in issue #8)
Tumblr media
Honorable mention:
Tumblr media
Thor and Loki: Blood Brothers by Robert Rodi and Esad Ribic -- In an alternate universe, Loki has waged war on Asgard and won, and now he must decide what to do with his new crown and his captured enemies. To secure victory for all time, all he must do now is execute Thor -- so why does he hesitate?
A heavy deep dive into Loki’s character, his past, and his relationships that, while not canon to the 616 comic universe, has greatly informed both the comics and cinematic adaptations of Loki. A piece of Loki history, and the source of a lot of common fanon.
-
I’ll link to part 2 when it’s finished. Until then, enjoy this updated guide!
I don’t know that I remember some of these well enough to give good content warnings for them, but I definitely remember Siege in particular having some brief but surprisingly extreme gore, so you might want to skip it if that’s gonna bother you. (And maybe World Eaters, if that contains the dream arc?) Tenth Realm and Asgard’s Assassin also both contain babies in mortal peril.

MCOC Wishlist Blog Character Spotlight KNULL
by Marco “Prophet of Knull” Garcia ed. Other Gabe
BACKGROUND
Knull is an ancient malevolent deity whose existence predates the universe itself, and was originally content to drift through the endless abyss that existed before time.
He used his weapon, the Necrosword, to combat the Celestials who disturbed his darkness. With this sword Knull severed the head of a Celestial. That head is now Knowhere, a popularly-known Marvel location and a battle zone in the Marvel Contest of Champions Battlerealm.
Wanting an army, Knull then constructed the aliens we all know, love, and sometimes hate, the Klyntar race of gooey symbiotic aliens.¹ Later, after a debacle with the Mighty Thor, the symbiotes rebelled against their “God” and trapped him on a desolate planet, later known as Klyntar. There the God of Symbiotes waits and plans his escape, hoping to one day lay waste and bring Darkness to the universe.
“The End is near. God is coming….”
Tumblr media
Editor’s note: the next several sections are designed to familiarize the reader with Knull’s worthiness to be featured in a video game, compared with the myriad other Marvel characters from whom Kabam could choose.
POPULARITY
Technically, Knull has been around since 2013, and appeared in Thor: God of Thunder Vol.1 #6 by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic, as he was a shadowed figure from whom Gorr the God Butcher steals All-Black the Necrosword.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was then revealed by name by his creators in Venom Vol. 4 #3 by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman in 2018.
Knull has had huge fan buzz around him since his inception and his name is only getting bigger. Despite fewer than a dozen appearances initially, Knull headlined the King in Black line-wide event that began in December 2020, from the minds of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman.
Tumblr media
Editor’s note: Arguably named after Knull, the King in Black initial release was considered critically to be a high-stakes situation, due to the perceived hype. Its comics made regular appearances in bestseller lists after the event launched, suggesting the Knull name and story, in conjunction with the strength of his creators’ reputations, was strong enough to sell books. Overall the King in Black arc has also gotten good critical reviews.
KNULL AS MATERIAL FOR OUR MARVEL GAME
Editor’s note: these character spotlights usually explore several factors to determine whether it is reasonable to expect Kabam to seriously consider the character as a candidate for addition to Marvel Contest of Champions. Among these factors are inclusion in other similarly-marketed games, mainstreaming in comics and other media, mentions in MCOC lore, Kabam conversation, or community rumors, and pure hype among summoners.
OTHER MARVEL GAMES
Knull has been featured in other games already: first in the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile app,² then in Marvel Future Fight. In Marvel Puzzle Quest, Knull was originally only part of the backstory description of the playable Prophet Carnage character, but was eventually released in his own right in May 2021.
KNULL AND THE BATTLEREALM
Arguably no direct mention of Knull has happened in either [Marvel Contest of Champions or Marvel Realm of Champions], but it can be said he was alluded to in the motion comic that accompanied the release of Cosmic Ghost Rider and Red Goblin in October 2020.
Then, when story mode Act 7 was released in December 2020, this dialogue was revealed, which has been strongly speculated to be a reference to Knull.
CLAIM TO FAME: KNULL IN OTHER MEDIA
Knull has not enjoyed a reference in any Marvel Cinematic Universe content to date. Hel has only been mentioned in the Disney XD cartoon Spider-Man: Maximum Venom with a retelling loosely based on his comic book origins.
UNIQUE WAYS KNULL COULD FIT INTO THE MCOC META
Knull could be a massive boost (editor’s note: synergy hub) to many Symbiote champions or champions in general. I see him as a Cosmic [based on what I was told by co-creator Ryan Stegman], with massive damage. Being the creator of symbiotes, Knull could outfit any [non-#Symbiote] champ with a “Klyntar symbiote” of their own to enhance their kit or base numbers. He could also operate with #Symbiote champs similarly to the way Apocalypse enhances Mutant champs. He could also work as a counter to Symbiotes or anyone who would have ever been bonded to a Klyntar before in canon, which would include most of the Spider-Fam!
Knull’s kit could alternately introduce a #Codex tag to add to certain non-#Spiderverse Hero champs who have famously bonded to symbiotes (paging Red Hulk or even Deadpool).³
A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN?
No mention of Knull ever came out of the Kabam team or anyone related to MCOC. Then again, Kabam never likes to tease big-name additions like Knull would be. Mid-September 2021, one data miner claimed that Knull is forthcoming.
WHAT DO SUMMONERS THINK?
Summoners seem to dig Knull. He was the winner of the first Tournament  of Battlerealm Future, March Addness 2020, which was co-hosted by MCOC Wishlist creator Other MCOC Gabe and Unofficial MCOC Podcast veteran UMCOC Deacon on Twitter. The tournament pitted hundreds of characters against one another for votes from Summoners expressing who they would prefer to enter Marvel Contest of Champions. He cleaned house throughout most of the tournament, earning his addition to the MCOC Wishlist, where he has risen into the top 50 most wanted champions.
Due to recent ramblings by the author, and the introduction of Red Goblin to Marvel Contest of Champions, people have warmed up to the idea that Knull might actually be coming to the contest. (Even community-renowned comics expert CTMCOC agrees!)
Once below rank 250 on the MCOC Wishlist, Knull now stands as the #31 most-wanted champ, with over 550 Summoner upvotes as of this writing.
KNULL: CHAMPION BUILD IDEAS
PROBABLE CLASS
As mentioned above, Knull is a canonically cosmic entity or deity who purports to predate the universe itself. This forms a strong case for the MCOC Cosmic class of champions.
POSSIBLE ABILITIES
Like many Cosmic champs’ builds, I can see his relying on many Active Buffs with massive damage and defensive potential due to Symbiotic Armor. Perhaps as Knull collects Codices, he gets stronger and this mechanic could be used in game as persistent charges. The more Codices he gathers, the more potent his Buffs could become. He could utilize Fury, Aptitude, Armor, Cruelty, Precision, and other critical-damage-enhancing Buffs. Bleed and Armor Break Debuffs are likely as Knull breaks down his enemies with bloodthirsty ferocity.
POSSIBLE SYNERGIES
Knull's status as the God of the Klyntar could enhance all #Symbiote champions just as Apocalypse does for Mutants.
Venom could get a unique synergy called “Daddy Issues,” allowing Venom a 2% attack boost for every Buff converted on his sp2 but as passive Fury stacks. I imagine Carnage with something like a “Prophet of Knull” Synergy allowing 95% resistance to incinerate effects, allowing him to heal from Incinerates, since Carnage has no weakness to fire when he is operating as Knull’s prophet in the comics.
Knull could also be built to spend Persistent Charges to enhance #Symbiote champions in order to increase their stats and enhance their buffs.
It would also be clever to have a Synergy with Void called “Knull and Void” allowing Void access to a non-stacking Armor Break Debuff, such as on his Heavy Attack. More debuffs for Void would be devastating.
Knull could also enjoy a basic “Enemies” synergy with Thor and Silver Surfer. A great champ to release in conjunction with Knull would be Gorr the God-Butcher, a notable Thor villain, played by Christian Bale in Thor: Love and Thunder, and the other best-known wielder of All-Black the Necrosword.
•.•.•
Editor’s note: this concludes Marco’s commentary and notes on Knull as a potential champion. Anyone tracking the conversation about future champs knows that the name of Knull comes up frequently among Summoners, and his rise in every voting event in the community tends to support the notion he is greatly demanded by Summoners and would make an excellent addition to the game.
This article was originally drafted almost entirely in late 2020, and has been dug up and completed in September 2021 after MCOC Trucos released a purportedly datamined leak suggesting Knull “is Coming” to Marvel Contest of Champions in October 2021. -OG

NOTES 1. The Klyntar alien race is most popularly represented by Venom, and his fellow Klyntar aliens Carnage, Scream, and the other names associated with their stories of superhuman symbiosis and “Venomization.”  2. Spider-Man Unlimited was well ahead of the curve announcing Knull for a video game in 2018. It got there by virtue of attempting to release almost every noteworthy Spider- and symbiote character as playable video game characters. Knull was not yet a character most people would consider important for gaming. 3. A codex (pl. codices) is the term for the biological traces a Klyntar symbiote leaves in its host’s system after separating from that host.

Hi, I really loved your post with the monsters as Birds of Prey! Was wondering if you had any thoughts on the Foxes as Marvel or Mcu characters? I feel like I could see Dan as Carol Danvers and Andrew for sure is Jessica Jones, idk about the rest.
oh wow old post!!
haha unfortunately i’m not really a comics person so i don’t feel like i can really give the best analysis possible, but i have seen most of the mcu movies and bits and pieces of the netflix show so i’ll try my best. also im using dc characters too bc i want to
1. Dan: I think your instinct with Dan as Captain Marvel is spot-on (at least uhhh,, based on the movie lol sorry comics ppl). Her direct, forceful powers and fighting style are definitely reminiscent of dan’s no-nonsense leadership approach. similarly the themes of overcoming sexism and acceling in a male-dominated industry in the captain marvel movie is pretty much the same as dan’s story establishing herself as the first female exy captain (tho sports is way more valid than the military). plus there’s a lot of emphasis on love and friendship between women that dan is ALL about. also lashana lynch would be a god tier dan wilds fc. Dan could also def have that lawful good Okoye from Black Panther energy. Loyal, disciplined, no-nonsense leader. no powers except discipline. no hair. also danai gurira in 2012 with the dreads and the sword and the cape on TWD was definitely part of my middle school sexual awakening
2. Kevin: Aquaman. this is based pretty much exclusively on the fact that jason momoa is my #1 kevin fc and also that Pasifika kevin is phenomenal and mandatory, actually. otherwise i think he has a decent amount of stick-up-the-ass cyclops energy. or dick grayson nightwing energy but i don’t have any evidence for why. kinda looks like him tho
3. Andrew: andrew gets the most characters bc he’s my favorite. i think ur jessica jones instincts are absolutely correct, both in her storyline (i only watched the first season) and her powers. i’ve seen some powers au and the tendency seems to be giving andrew like,, psychic powers or the like, and i don’t really agree. andrew is a very direct character. he’s pragmatic, he confronts problems head on, and he doesn’t muck about in details. to me this really translates best into physical powers like super strength that help u big punch straight thru all ur problems. also i def think andrew would be not just a solo hero but a mercenary (or a detective) because he’s not altruistic enough to be a standard vigilante. he doesn’t care enough about other people to hang out on rooftops all night waiting for Crime to occur. there’s a price for that.  which brings us to the NEXT andrew hero: deadpool. maybe in personality more of a drugged andrew but the superpowered mercenary is really a perfect fit for andrew. also, healing powers have a decidedly tragic poetry to them on andrew. already he’s self-destructive, if he had a healing factor his concern for his own well-being would be so beyond rock bottom it’d be in the earth’s core. even worse when you remember that with a healing factor, as opposed to indestructibility, you still feel all the pain. which brings us to Wolverine and X-23, who have the same thematic points as deadpool but are much more of a personality match and they have knife hands, which i really think andrew would appreciate. ending that sadness train and onto another tho, andrew’s aesthetic and Vibes fit the Winter Soldier just SO well (just that movie tho, not really civil war or anything past that) and a reinterpretation of the captain america story using the twinyards would be incredibly interesting. and finally, one last hero that would work really well for andrew: rogue, only remove the angst around not being able to touch people, andrew would love that. one touch and their comatose? baller. don't fucking touch him.
4. Matt: Shazam. I didn’t see the shazam movie but my dad and brother did and they said it was very funny and all the trailors looked like it had a lot of fun himbo energy and i really think that fits. in terms of matching himbo disaster energy i think i’ve heard good things about comics hawkeye (not mcu). thor?
5. Aaron: Mr. Fantastic. now this might be a stretch but aaron is a character who uses a skin-deep veneer of anger to cover the fact that he’s actually quite pliant and bends to other people’s wills. and he’s a doctor or w/e. he could alse be like,, antman. he’s smart right? hank pym not paul rudd. katelyn can be wasp
6. Seth: Arm Fall Off Boy. no i will not elaborate.             ..... ugh fine, but i'm using my favorite piece of superhero media of all time: x-men evolution, the one where they're all teenagers in public high school. seth can be lance alvers/avalanche who’s a bit of a jerk and has a lot of issues with authority and has a rivalry with cyclops very reminiscent of seth with kevin, but still there’s the recurring theme that he’s lashing out because of low self-esteem and a bad situation and he’s a surprisingly sympathetic character who i’m very fond of. his power is earthquakes but i think the name makes that pretty self-explanatory
7. Allison: Iron Man. cocky, bitchy, and rich rich rich. sounds like allison to me. then to elevate it a level higher: emma frost, rich bitch extraordinaire. also if allison had telepathic powers she would be unstoppable. plus one more bitchy, morally-gray blonde (but chaotic this time): Harley Quinn
8. Nicky: Okay so I do wanna give a quick shout-out to Northstar, the first openly gay comicbook superhero, who’s a speedster which I’d actually say fits Nicky pretty well. However, if i had to choose a superhero to represent nicky in presence and powers it would have to be Jubilee from x-men (... from what i’ve heard lol. i’ve never actually consumed any of her Media hahaha anyway) she’s a joyful, energetic presence and her powers are setting off fireworks which i think is a good balance of nicky being a supportive cousin-parent AND a chaotic train wreck garbage trash man. also gonna throw in johnny storm for a cheap 'flaming' joke
9. Renee: Thunder/Blackbird from Black Lightning bc she’s a fufkin lesbian lol. (i don’t watch the show but i do follow nafessa williams’s tag). now the fr ones i’m gonna do together because to me they have the same Vibes so i chose them for the same reasons. Wonder Woman and Storm who to me have the same  reserved, impartial, regal energy. honestly ethereal and somewhat otherwordly, and quite literally goddesses. also op as hell.  black widow and her “red in my leger” looking for redemption story also fits thematically.
10. Neil: okay lazy answer first: the flash or quicksilver. get it? because they run fast? and neil run too? yea i like to think i've proven myself to be better than such a surface level interpretation but worth the mention ig. so for srs now, mystique and her shape changing powers would be an interesting interpretation of neil's identity issues, but i wanna push it a step further. nightcrawler would actually be possibly the MOST interesting hero to apply to neil 1. because powers still very movement go fast place to place 2. because of the thematic focus on neil's unusual looks and the lengths he goes to hide them, very much in line with the way nightcrawler will use a hologram-projector in order to look human, yet in both cases it's only a surface-level illusion, and 3. his parentage. here, mary would be mystique, which i also think works very well considering mary seemed to be the far more effective chameleon on the run than neil, and also fits with her place as a morally grey character, as mystique herself is often a villain or an antagonist, with her own agenda and shadowy motives. then nathan matches well with nightcrawler's father: azazel, a literal demon, and also where kurt gets his appearance. it's a shockingly coherent narrative between the three of them. then, to also give neil some powers that aren't contingent on his fucked up geneology and rather on his own merit and abilities, Black Canary and her sonic voice parallel the way that neil began to anchor his identity and take ownership over himself through his voice and his sick roasts
and 1 extra, wymack: batman, on account of his altruism, his dedication to second chances, and his many, many adopted children
---
anon, ik it's been a sec since you sent this, so i hope it gets back to you. i had a fun time with it and it prompted like,,, 7 different au s that i'll never write

The Losers: Chris Evans, Idris Elba and Zoe Saldana’s Forgotten Superhero Movie
https://ift.tt/3CsNhNU
Even The Losers get lucky sometimes. Before the DCEU was formed to compete against the ever-expanding, cash cow that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the approach at Warner Bros. was far looser. With the booming business of comic book adaptations in full swing, the studio was throwing money at several eclectic comic book titles like Watchmen and Jonah Hex, trying to stay competitive and seemingly more adult than their rivals. Hence before leaving to create his own superhero project, Hancock, wrier-director Peter Berg started penning an adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s The Losers, bringing in French director Sylvain White to helm the picture.
Produced by Joel Silver, The Losers centered on a team of elite, black-ops Special Forces operatives betrayed by their handler. Director White connected with the material immediately.
“What appealed to me about The Losers was that it wasn’t the typical superhero-with-superpowers thing,” White told MTV. “It was based on real characters—realistic characters—and based in reality, like a lot of the European graphic novels that I had grown up reading.” The director worked with creators Jock and Andy Diggle to refine the script and lend their expertise with design to give the film a distinct visual palette that changes with new locations.
Frequent Silver collaborator Idris Elba was cast as Captain William Roque, with the cast being rounded out by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, coming off his turn as The Comedian in the studio’s adaptation of Watchmen, Zoe Saldana, fresh off of starring in the highest-grossing film of all-time, Avatar, Chris Evans, still mainly known for playing the Human Torch in Fox’s early Fantastic Four films, and rising actor Columbus Short. While current audiences would go on to become intimately familiar with most of this cast, their names didn’t generate enough buzz in 2010 to get folks into the theater. The Losers only made about $30 million on a $25 million budget.
Of course a tepid response at the box office does not mean that a movie is destined for obscurity. Just recently hitting Netflix and ready to capitalize off its now A-list cast, The Losers is currently the most popular film on the streaming service. Besides the even greater interest in comic book properties, the cast of The Losers have gone on to such success that they revitalized interest in one of DC’s almost-forgotten adaptations. Let’s look at where the cast of The Losers have been since the film’s release in 2010 to explain the sudden spike in love.
Idris Elba
While Elba, a star of British television via Luther, had already made an impression with American audiences by 2010 thanks to 28 Weeks Later, Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla, and a guest stint on The Office, Elba’s star would rise considerably after his appearance in The Losers. In 2011, Elba would join the MCU as Heimdall in Thor, who’s role in the Thor films would expand as the franchise progressed. Elba would also pop up in prominent roles in blockbusters like Prometheus, Pacific Rim, The Jungle Book, and Star Trek Beyond. Away from blockbusters though he really broke out with a SAG-winning performance in Beasts of No Nations, and starring in fare like Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game.
More recently, Elba stole scenes away from Jason Statham and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the villain in Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw. Finally, things have come a bit full circle for Elba, as he’s set to appear in another DC adaptation over 10 years after The Losers, portraying Bloodsport in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan
In 2010, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was probably most well-known for his roles on television in series like Supernatural and Grey’s Anatomy. That all changed after Morgan was cast in an adaptation of the “unfilmable” graphic novel Watchmen as The Comedian. While his time onscreen in the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons adaptation was minimal, bringing such an iconic comic book character to life earned Morgan a deeper cachet with the Comic-Con crowd. Morgan would work steadily in films like The Possession and the Red Dawn remake, but he arguably made a bigger impact on television portraying yet another iconic comic book character on AMC’s The Walking Dead, Negan.

Morgan received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the villainous Negan upon his debut, earning the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Guest Performer in a Drama Series, MTV Movie and TV Award for Best Villain, and Saturn Award for Best Guest Starring Role on Television. He’s been going steady as Negan since while doing other occasional comic-con friendly projects like Rampage.
Zoe Saldana
Zoe Saldana was on top of the world in 2010, and in the time since, she’s only become more successful. After appearing in the buzzy Star Trek reboot in 2009 and a little film called Avatar, the former Center Stage star would go on to headline her own action film Colombiana. However, that would seem like small potatoes compared to what would come in 2014. Saldana was cast as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s riskiest adaptation to date. Would audiences get onboard with an off-beat space opera featuring C-tier Marvel characters? Turns out, yes. Gamora not only became the heart of the Guardians, but the character would feature prominently in the grand Phase 3 finales Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
In the shadow of that, Saldana has starred in more Star Trek sequels, an ill-advised TV remake of Rosemary’s Baby, and as Nina Simone in in Nina, a performance did come under fire for due to the lightness of her skin. Still, Saldana now has leading roles in the two highest grossing films of all-time, and is still expected to star in Guardians and Avatar sequels. Not too shabby.
Chris Evans
Speaking of the MCU, Chris Evans wasn’t floundering in 2010, but he did seem to be stuck in a bit of a rut, typecast as handsome smart alecks prior to The Losers. In fact, his big mainstream break is probably the less than classic spoof comedy, Not Another Teen Movie (2001); afterward he played Johnny Storm in Tim Story’s lukewarm Fantastic Four movies in the mid-2000s; in fact, arguably his most amusing role up to 2010 was when he appeared as a douchebag movie star in Edgar Wright’s genre-bending comedy, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010).

That said, The Losers found him playing against type as an awkward tech expert. Perhaps his chance to show a different side of himself led to his life-changing role as Steve Rogers in the MCU’s Captain America. Anchoring the Avengers franchise for eight years, Chris Evans rose to the top of the A-list, and used that newfound celebrity to help get passion projects like Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer and Rian Johnson’s Knives Out made. Evans is one of the most popular celebrities on social media right now and looks to continue his profitable relationship with Disney by voicing Buzz Lightyear in the animated origin film, Lightyear.
Columbus Short
Perhaps the only member of the cast not to launch into the stratosphere after The Losers, Columbus Short has had a few issues that have prevented his rise. Short booked a role on the popular ABC series Scandal, but personal issues derailed his involvement in the show. In 2014, as part of a no-jail plea agreement, Short pled guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence and performed 30 hours of community service. Short also avoided jail by pleading no contest to a felony assault charge after throwing “a running punch” at his in-law during a family gathering at a bar.
In an interview with Access Hollywood Live, Short shared that substance abuse due to the stress of family issues and personal loss had led to his departure from Scandal. However, Short has appeared to move past his personal struggles and can next been seen portraying Martin Luther King Jr. in Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Storyand returning as Quadir Richards in True to the Game 3.

Comic Thoughts: Power in ‘The Mighty Thor’ vols. 1, 2, & 3
Some background:
About a month after the pandemic started, I reached out to a coworker/friend who is into comics, too. I asked for a DC story/graphic novel I should read that we could then discuss. Thus our 2-person comic reading club was born. We’ve read some Superman, Black Widow, and Green Lantern. And now we are reading Jason Aaron’s The Mighty Thor.
Reading The Mighty Thor as graphic novels (and after going through breast cancer) is different from reading them issue by issue. It’s clear Jason Aaron has some views on power.
Volume 1 - Masculine vs feminine power
Volume 2 - Corporate power & greed
Volume 3 - What it means to be a god
Volume 1 - Thunder in Her Veins
Masculine vs feminine power
This first volume is as much about Loki as it is about Thor. And I find Loki’s story to be more compelling than Thor’s.
Loki has 2 fathers who see him as “less than”. For Laufey (and Odin), power is about brute strength, not intelligence. Loki is lesser because he is not as big and strong as a Frost Giant should be. Loki has to use his mind, his magic, his understanding of people to get what he wants.  In this volume, Loki can’t seem to decide if he is trying to earn Laufey’s love or if he wants to annoy him. It doesn’t matter all that much as it is secondary to his true goal, joining Maleketh’s group as they conquer the realms one by one. But to do that, he has to get the approval of daddy Laufey, who make it clear he does not like Loki’s powers. Despite “passing the test” (i.e. not getting killed by a bunch of Frost Giants), no one on Maleketh's team trusts him. Given how many Loki’s there are, he can’t exactly trust himself either. Only one thing is for certain, Loki is a survivor.
With Thor, Odin cannot stand the fact that a woman is using Mjolnir. He wants her dead and the hammer back where it belongs - with his son. And yet every time Mjolnir presents itself, Jane has a choice to make. She can pick it up and have her cancer treatment be ineffectual, or she can ignore it and the people who need her help. She picks up the hammer every time, slowly killing herself not for glory or to gain power over others but instead to provide help.
Volume 2 - The Lords of Midgard
Corporate power & greed
We discussed this the Friday after the company we work for announced that there would be layoffs but before anyone was told whether they were being laid off or not. It put the story of Dario Agger’s greed and complete disregard for others into sharp focus, amplifying the feelings of anxiety and of being “cogs in a machine” that could be discarded with seeming ease.
Agger is the CEO of Roxxon Energy.  He had a plan to destroy Manhattan and everyone on it if something happened to him. He did not care about those who worked for him. He did not care if he destroyed planets to get the resources he needed. He is every energy company CEO that has known for years that people are causing climate change but are doing their damnedest to convince everyone climate change does not exist.
The message is clear. Corporations don’t care about people, they care about profits. And Agger is the personification of “If I can’t have it, no one can.”
There is a bit at the end where his lawyers want to sue the company that made the jets (as a way to claim it was faulty technology and not a pre-determined process that almost destroyed Manhattan). One notes that the company is a subsidiary of Roxxon Energy. The solution? Sell the subsidiary and then sue it. It’s all slight of hand and optics.
Later Dario Agger shows up in Immortal Hulk. There he represents the Mark Zuckerbergs of the world. Profit is the most important. And if it means convincing people to believe in a reality that doesn’t actually exist, then so be it.
Volume 3 - Asgard/Shi’ar War
What does it mean to be a god?
This volume is all about the power of gods. Brief Synopsis: Loki bruises the egos of the Shi’ar gods, causing them to challenge Thor to determine who the best god is.
The Shi’ar gods see power as destruction. They create a tsunami so that the people will pray to them. Other challenges include getting someone to kill their child, spreading disease, and just generally causing pain and suffering. The Asgardian gods are little better. They are a society of warriors after all. But Thor, having all of Jane’s experiences, sees her role as bringing relief and healing.
During the challenges, particularly the tsunami, there is the notion that the gods bring hardships, and we pray for them to spare us then pray more in thanks when they do. But there is no deliberate choice on the gods’ part as to who will be saved. It’s just a game. We are playthings for them when they get bored.
But Jane is still human and knows first hand from having cancer how arbitrary it all is. She is a doctor first, god second. (A god who does not believe in gods.) She’d rather help people than be seen as all-powerful, particularly if power equates to destruction.
Given all of that, I know Jane would want us all to wear masks.

Pride Month’s LGBTQ Character of the Day: Loki
Yes, Loki of Asgard, brother of Thor. A character who has been around for as long as Thor had comics A character who had some many shitty things like stealing Sif’s body.
We aren’t talking about this Loki. I mean we ARe...but we aren’t. Because that Loki has died. And then was reborn as an innocent but powerless child, who just wanted everyone to love him and his big brother Thor to be proud of him. Kid Loki had a series of adventures in Journey Into Mystery from issue #631 to #645 with some crossovers along the way, leading to becoming a comedy in 30 chapters.
Or a tragedy in 31.
I will not spoil what has happened and what kind of crime that cannot be forgiven was committed, but it did shape the course of Loki’s life from that point on. And since JiM is an excellent book that I will always recommend, I advise reading it...especially since two books that landed Loki the entry here shamelessly spoil the ending.
In Young Avengers Loki has assembled a new team of teenage superheroes as a part of a scheme. And joined them. Things did not work as planned and Loki was forced to abbandon form of a child and...basically regenerate like Doctor into a Teen Loki. That Loki, among other things, was openly interested in both genders, explaining he has more Old Nordic view on sexuality less as identity and more as sexual acts. In subsequent series Loki: Agent of Asgard this also extend to gender identity, with Loki freely assuming female form and even undergoing another “regeneration” into Loki who was even more at ease with and accepting of being genderfluid (regarding pronouns, Loki preferrs appropriate to current form, so he/him when presenting as male and she/her when as female). Interestingly this book’s antagonist was basically a classic evil Loki, through time travel shenanigans. Also, between issues #5 and #6 takes place a miniseries Thor & Loki: the Tenth Realm in which Loki teams up with Thor to rescue their long lost sister (and, as explored in her own books, a wlw icon) Angela from the titular realm. It has a beautiful scene where Odin acknowledges Loki as his “child who is both [male and female]” and assures he still loves her.
I cannot with good heart recommend books in which Loki has been since Agent of Asgard ended. Jason Aaron basically ignores Loki being bi or genderfluid and is VERY clear he would rather be writing old, eeeevil Loki. Gerry Duggan mostly used Loki to just push the plot for his Infinity Wars storyline. Admittingly, it did involve Loki tricking a villain into trying to solve “finite resources” dilemma MCU Thanos had without killing anyone, by... fusing people and giving us such wonders as Stephen Rogers, the Soldier Supreme, Siggurd Stark, the Iron Hammer or Howard Odin, CEO of Asgard. So if you want more Loki content, pick up Duggan for silly stuff.
Loki has an upcoming series launching in July. 3 first issues are now up for preorder. I cannot tell what quality it will be but I am hopeful it will remember Loki is an LGBTQ character and a hero...okay, an anti-hero, not a villain.

Best of Marvel: Week of February 12th, 2020
Best of this Week: Thor #3 - Donny Cates, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson and Joe Sabino
Tumblr media
Thor has lived for a millennium and has fought in thousands, if not millions, of battles... but the one he will remember most was against his brother in arms: Beta Ray Bill.
That’s the tale that Donny Cates is spinning as we see the fallout from the last issue of Thor as Beta Ray Bill comes to find his brother standing side by side with the Eater of Worlds, Galactus. Their stare down is intense and readers can feel the vortex of thoughts in both of their minds. Nic Klein and Matt Wilson frame their confrontation excellently with a pulled out shot, showing them both with Bill floating hesitantly and Thor standing still, unaffected by Bill’s appearance. In the background looms the World Eater with neon oranges coloring his body while all of them are in space.
Cates does an amazing job of portraying Bill as someone who cares for his people, specifically Thor, given Odin and the Thunder God gave him a home and people after Galactus destroyed his. He tells Thor that he will have his revenge against Galactus for corrupting his brother’s honor and attempts to strike the Thunder God. Unfortunately for him, with the Power Cosmic, Thor backhands Beta Ray Bill into the recently destroyed planet of Clypse.
Tumblr media
It’s an excellent show of power as Thor barely moves an inch and as Bill crashes, Klein draws an excellent pair of panels showing Bill being flung into the ruins of the planet, with Wilson offering amazing and dynamic oranges for the subsequent explosion and an awesome DOOM lettering from Joe Sabino as Bill hits the surface. The next panel shows Bill trying to stand with his armor and helmet in absolute tatters. Thor then comes to him and says that in the past they were equals, but with the Power Cosmic and his new All-Father abilities, he is far beyond what he was.
This is absolutely true as well. In their first meeting in The Mighty Thor #337 (1983), Bill was able to overpower Thor and use Mjolnir as a weapon against the Thunder God, thinking he was a threat to Bill’s fellow Korbinites. Soon after, the pair became the greatest of allies, even brothers when Odin forged a new hammer for Beta Ray Bill called Stormbreaker and allowed him to fight through the cosmos as an Ally of Asgard. However, it has been quite a few years since then and Thor himself has gone above and beyond his capabilities from their first meeting.
In the almost forty years since that story, Thor has beaten the Mangog and Thanos back-to-back (Thor, 1998), knocked out the Phoenix Force (Avengers vs. X-Men, 2012), fought back against the forces of the Collecter for a straight two years in order to reach a hammer from another universe (The Unworthy Thor, 2016) and repelled an interdimensional invasion from Malekith the Accursed (War of the Realms, 2019). He is now the All-Father of Asgard as well and Bill has lagged behind.
Tumblr media
Thor tries to calm his brother by using the Thunder to transform into his non-Power Cosmic form, showing Bill that he is completely in charge of his own decisions. Wilson does an awesome job of using blue to contrast the raging fires of Clypse and Thor looks absolutely heroic and badass in his new costume with his regular, non-glowing, hair. Galactus blasts at Thor, telling him that he is not above the Power Cosmic, but Thor overpowers him with Mjolnir alone as the scene is colored with intense white and purple hues.
Bill calls Thor a traitor for choosing to help Galactus and gives the Thunder God a nice whack across the face that BOOMs out in his anger. Beta Ray Bill is angry and where he might have been holding back before, he questions Thor’s integrity for siding with a monster like Galactus and the two have a savage fight against each other. It’s intense and paints their formerly friendly rivalry in a new and painful light as every strike is filled with venom, rage and anguish. Both men even have great points during the fight as they speak between punches and hammer swings.
Bill tells Thor that he is a king and he has an army at his very command. He could have sent forces to the edge of the universe and fought to his last to stop the Black Winter from taking another Universe. The most powerful line comes when Bill says, “You could have come to ME!” and this hits far harder than every thunderous blow the pair have made to each other. Thor did have options and he always has his brother as the two have fought side by side through worse.
Tumblr media
Thor needed Bill’s help when Asgard was about to crash into the Earth during Secret Invasion (2008) and Bill even offered Thor Stormbreaker when the Thunderer found himself Unworthy. Bill has always been there when Thor has needed him, but this time Thor has chosen to go to the shadows rather seek help from his friends in the light.
Thor owns up to the fact that he has to become something almost evil because there’s a far larger picture that Bill isn’t seeing however. The Black Winter has destroyed Universes and it will destroy this one too unless Thor allows Galactus to consume the planets that he’s heralding him to. Thor understands the responsibilities he has as King of Asgard and he is completely right. Bill is an idealist in this situation, but realistically Galactus, having survived the previous Winter, is their last hope (at least until something better comes along later down the line).
After smacking each other around for several pages, Thor attempts to throw Mjolnir at Bill and the Korbinite catches it, trying to keep it away from Thor. The Thunder God attempts to call it back, threatening to take Bill’s arm if he keeps fighting against him, but Bill does not relent. Klein frames this as not just a struggle of power, but of honor. Thor initially stands firm, trying to reason with Beta Ray Bill, but Bill is steadfast and struggles against the weight of Thor’s power. We get a pulled in shot of Bill holding on through sheer will before he tells Thor that he truly is unworthy of Mjolnir.
Tumblr media
Klein then gives us an amazing shot of Thor lowering his head, a moment of pained realization as Bill’s words strike him to the core as he’s unable to say a word against it. But it is for only a moment as Thor then calls Stormbreaker to his hand and we get an almost heartbreaking and powerful double page spread that is best read for yourself.
Overall, this was yet another phenomenal issue of Thor in what I believe is an absolutely worthy successor to Jason Aaron’s years long epic with only three issues released so far. Donny Cates understands the sheer power that these characters wield and scripts them to great effect. He also understands their personalities and strives to give us a badass story that leans on Marvel’s past while also creating a new history in the process. I honestly haven’t felt this energized about a Thor story since The Unworthy Thor almost four years ago and I feel the same gravitas from this story as I did from that one.
Nic Klein, Matt Wilson and Joe Sabino absolutely pull this issue together with their excellent pencils, colors and lettering respectively.  Klein has an excellent eye for scale and fight scenes in particular which gives this book a grander feel while also highlighting the brutality that Thr and Bill are capable of as warriors. Wilson accentuates Klein’s lines with stunning colors that pop off of the pages and create the intensity and heat from the raging fires and crackling lightning. Sabino places word balloons and sound effects to give the book a voice and sound for every hard hitting action or line of dialogue.
Tumblr media
With all of them together, this book is the Perfect Storm of what a great Thor comic can be and the awesome potential of singular events taking place in one issue. So far, I’m absolutely enthralled with this book and the cliffhanger from this issue absolutely ensures that I’ll be back for more - High Recommend.
