(Part 6) MILGRAM x AVOIT bluetooth earphones collab: Mikoto and Kotoko voice lines

Wet Beast Wednesday: platypus

Since I've been designing original Pokemon for a hypothetical Australia-based region I've been doing some research on Australian fauna and one of them (which I made into a starter) is the famous platypus. Join me and we will learn why these animals are so weird I don't blame the European naturalists who thought they were hoaxes until presented with a live specimen. I mean you can blame European scientists of the time for a lot of things, but doubting the platypus isn't one of them.

The first preserved Platypus specimens brought to Europe were thought to be hoaxes made by taxidermists attaching parts of different animals together, like the Fiji mermaid or jackalopes. Its pretty clear why they thought this as platypi (there's not definitive plural of platypus and platypi is the one I refer) look like real-life chimeras. A mole-like body (indeed, they were originally thought by naturalists to be species of mole) with a duck's bill, otter's feet, and beaver's tail. In fact, platypi are none of the above but are instead one of five surviving species of monotremes, the smallest and most basal lineage of extant mammals alongside the marsupials and placentals. Monotremes possess many traits distinct from other mammals and taxonomists currently believe that the monotreme lineage split off from the lineage of live-birth giving mammals prior to marsupials and placentals diverging from each other. Differences that monotremes have from all other mammals include a lower body temperature, lack of external ears, different jaw and inner ear structures, a cloaca (combination of the excretory and reproductive tracts into a single hole), more reptile-like embryo development, and the fact that they lay eggs instead of giving live birth. Many of these traits (especially the cloaca and laying eggs) are believed to be holdovers from pre-mammalian ancestors and thus monotremes are highly valued by scientists studying mammal evolution.

Platypi are semi-aquatic animals found in rivers and streams along eastern Australia and Tasmania. They are the only living members of their genus and family, though fossil relatives have been found. Their size varies based on habitat and ranges from 0.7 to 2.4 kg (1.6 to 5.3 lbs). Males average 50 cm (20 in) and females average 43 cm (17 in). Platypi are covered in fur that traps a layer of air to insulate them while swimming. The fur is bioflourescent, producing a blue-green glow when exposed to ultraviolet light. The tail is used to store fat and will glow larger in a well-fed individual. All four feet are webbed, the front feet more so. The style of swimming used by platypi is unlike that of any other amphibious or aquatic mammal. Other mammals use their hind feet and/or tails for propulsion. Platypi instead use their front feed for propulsion. The hind feet and tail are only used for steering. When on land, platypi curl up their front toes and walk on their knuckles to protect the webbing between their toes. The eyes are small and weak and are not used when hunting.

The bill is the most important organ for finding prey. All living monotremes are capable of electroreception, the detection of electric fields. These fields are produced when prey contracts its muscles and the platypus is sensitive enough to detect very small prey. The electroreceptor organs are located on the bill and run in lines from front to back. The distribution of the organs in distinct lines allows the platypus to determine the direction of the source of an electric field by sensing which line feels the field most strongly. The bill is also covered uniformly in mechanoreceptors used for touch. Platypi hunt by digging their bills through the sediment at the bottom of the water and detecting prey. This method of hunting and use of electroreception allows platypi to hunt in very murky water. Prey consists primarily of worms, insect larvae, and crustaceans. Platypi are born with teeth in their bills, but they fall out quickly and are not replaced. Some fossil species apparently retained their teeth into adulthood. The insides of the bill are lined with ceratodontes, plates covered in rough, keratinized surfaces that are used to grind up food.

As if all that wasn't strange enough, platypi are also one of the few species of venomous mammals. The male platypus has spurs on the hind feet that inject venom. This venom is powerful enough to kill dogs, but is not fatal to humans. Instead, it causes swelling and increases sensitivity to pain. This can last for weeks to months and can be agonizing. Female platypi are born with the spurs, but they never develop venom and fall off by their first birthday. Males use their spurs to fight over territory and mates.

Platypi live in simple burrows dug along the water's edge around 30 cm above the surface of the water. They are often hidden behind roots or plants. Platypi spend most of their time in the burrow sleeping for up to 14 hours a day. When not sleeping, they spend most of theer time in the water hunting. Dives last up to 30 seconds with a 10-20 second surface interval. Platypi will travel up to 7 km (4.3 miles) from their burrows to hunt. They maintain territories and will attempt to chase competitors of the same sex out. Males have larger territories than females and their territories usually overlap with those of 3 or 4 females. Platypi are nocturnal and crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) but have been known to come out on cloudy days. They are typically active for 12 hours per day and spend most of that time hunting. A platypus eats up to 20% of its body weight daily. Platypi are preyed upon by snakes, goannas (monitor lizards), various birds of prey, and possibly crocodiles and invasive foxes.

Platypus mating season lasts between June and October every year. During this time, males will compete with each other for mates using their venomous spurs. Some males will maintain territories and force other males out while other males are more transitory and will go looking for mates. Females only mate with a single male every season. Strangely, females have two ovaries but only the left one is functional. After mating, the female will retreat to her burrow. While most egg-laying animals will lay they eggs as soon s they are formed, platypi retain their eggs internally for 28 days before laying them, after which they will continue to develop for 10 days before hatching. Most layings result in 2 eggs. The female curls around her eggs to incubate and protect them. Newborn platypi are called puggles and they are blind, hairless, and defenseless. As with other mammals, they feed on their mother's milk. Platypi do not have nipples and instead, the milk is secreted through the skin and into grooves on the mother's belly, where the puggles lap it up. While the puggles are developing, the mother spends less time out foraging, though she will increase the time foraging as her offspring develop. Weaning happes at 3-4 months, after which the juveniles will leave the burrow and set out on their own. Mothers have been observed laving behind soil plugs at the entrance to their burrows while there are offspring are in them. They are used to squeeze off water as the female returns to her burrow, preventing cold water from reaching the offspring.

Platybi are classified as near threatened by the IUCN, though some argeu they should be reclassified as endangered. Their habitat range has decreased since European colonization of Australia and they are threatened by habitat loss, dams, pollution, and bycatch. Aboriginal Australians historically hunted them for food and Europeans also hunted them for fur, which was outlawed in 1912. The platypus was and is culturally relevant to Aboriginal peoples sharing its range, particularly the native peoples of the Murray river. There are multiple Dreamtime stories of the platypus, many dedicated to explaining how it ended up the way it is. In one, originating from the upper Darling river, a female duck named Daroo or was either seduced or kidnapped by a male water rat named Biggoon or Bilargun. After escaping, she laid two eggs that hatched into the first platypi, inheriting their mother's bill and webbed feet and father's body and fur. Another story from the same region says that the land animals, water animals, and birds all wanted the platypus to join their group and tried to convince it to join. The platypus decided that it didn't need to join any of the groups to be special, but still wanted to be friends with all of them and so took on traits from all groups.

Gah, all this shout out stuff I'm seeing for my artist mutuals is so cute and deserved so lemme also do it cuz i love them 😔✨💛💛💛 [I actually have SOO many people i love and adore its ridiculous, but i'll keep this "short" by shouting out the very small circle I followed when i first started to make fanart 👉👈]

And by "Short" i mean im gonna add a cut cuz i never shut up :3c @booigi-boi ~the~ #1 Ted spankofski artist [no room for argument, this is just factual.] The way they draw face's and poses, and hair, and clothes, and joey in general is just absolutely incredible!!!! [The moment I saw her art I was just awestruck, and so ridiculously inspired to start drawing again that it's ended up with me right here now... so if you hate me blame her /J] She just has such beautiful line-work and an ability to create such expressive fun pieces, along with having such a talent of using minimal shading and yet making every art piece look totally decked out. Just!!! its literally all so beautiful. incredible. amazing. [Imagine this goes on for way too long and its incredibly obnoxious.] 🐐💛✨ [She's also just a very neat person in general]

WHEN ARE THE REWATCH PARTIES?

The Rewatch Parties are every other Saturday, at two different times, so that as many people as possible can participate directly! The schedule for the current round of Rewatch Parties is:

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?

Here on Tumblr, we will be using the tag "Blinky's Rewatch Party." You can use the tag to liveblog your rewatch, or wait until the story is over to post any and all thoughts at once. If you can't make either of the chosen times, that's okay! The tag's not going anywhere; simply watch and post your thoughts whenever you can. And remember to check out the tag to see what other people are saying!

If the Tumblr tagging system isn't your ideal communal watching experience, that's cool too. We're set up on several other social media platforms that you are welcome to check out!

Also you can follow this blog! It's not super necessary, but it will make keeping up with any updates easier. Also, likes and ESPECIALLY reblogs of any and all posts are greatly appreciated--I don't really care about notes for notes' sake, but since the whole point is to keep people watching Nightmare Time, I'd love for the parties to reach as many people as possible!

What’s something you learned this year?

ive learned a lot of things this year wbwbw but i guess something real notable i learned was 1920s fashion (that is, the cuts the colours the materials, how the styles changed over the decade) !! prior to this year i hadn't thought 1920s fashion was my can of worms (1890s-1900s dress my beloved <3) but now i really like the 1920s in terms of its fashion wbwbw (i even designed a whole set of costumes for an exam performance set in the 1920s !)

Epilogue, Part 2 of 2 -- Letters from -H

Rabbit receives the first postcard a week and a half after Becile Manor burned to the ground. It has an illustration of a jackalope on the front, posed sitting with its head up, and the writing on the back is made up of sharp, straight lines.

I saw one of these while we were stopped headed east. No one else believes me. But I remember your stupid cowboy song, and I know you know I’m not lying this time.

The second postcard is from Sun Valley, Idaho, but is not postmarked from there.

Goddamn, there’s a lot of stars.

More postcards trickle in, their return addresses tracing a path east, then north, then east again, then sharp south. Soon, there are envelopes mixed in with the postcards. They contain one or two photographs, written on the back in the same hand. The first photo is of the Becile’s grumpy engineer, squinting in the flash of the camera, and reads:

I found this camera in a real nowhere’s-ville shop. Szarka had some real funny things to say about how old it was, forgetting I was around when these things were on 35mm. Joke’s on him. More to follow.

Later:

Skully’s learning to drive. Here’s the ditch he drove the van into on his first day.

Then an old garage appears, all dusty glass and cracked blue paint on concrete. Instead of writing on the back of the photo, a short letter is included:

We finally made it to Szarka’s old place. His mother locked the door on the rest of us while she grilled him, but it was easy to pick. We weren’t about to let him get torn to shreds all alone. Guess she found something respectable in that. She doesn’t like us, but she’s letting us stay a little while. I already hate this small town business.

A few days later, there’s a news clipping:

BAD NEWS ‘BOTS: COAL FUELED AUTOMATONS CAUSE RUCKUS AT LOCAL FARMER’S MARKET

And a note:

Hey, no such thing as bad publicity.

Three weeks later, the postcards are coming from Chicago.

We had to split from Smallville after we ran into trouble with the locals. We’ll be back, sorry to say. Szarka’s ma said she’d kill us if we kept him away another ten years. That’s trouble for later. Right now, we’re taking the Windy City for all it’s worth.

I feel right at home.

At some point, Hare sits down with The Jack and The Skull.

“I’m remembering things,” Hare says to them, rolling a half dollar between his knuckles. He still won’t have his jaw looked at, but a new metal patch adorns his right eye socket. “I don’t know if I still would if Locksmith’s last little present hadn’t knocked something loose. But it wasn’t just seeing things.”

“The city is so different,” The Jack says quietly. “But there’s small things, like-- like the way certain streets curve, or the color of the sunset. I remember, too. I remember being here with you.”

“I don’t,” The Skull says. “But maybe that’s not surprising.”

“What do you mean?” Hare asks.

“It may have only been for a second, but we all saw who we were. And I wasn’t related to you two.”

“So maybe you grew up somewhere else,” The Jack says.

“Maybe,” The Skull mutters, and then is silent.

Hare flips the half-dollar and snatches it out of the air. He walks over to The Skull, jabs a finger in his chest.

“Skully, you listen here. I’ve been me a lot longer than I was him. And I’m gonna keep on being me, and you’re gonna keep on being you, and we’s brothers, through and through. You don’t ever doubt that, OK?”

The Skull looks back at him, then he grunts and knocks Hare’s hand away. “As if you’d ever let me forget. But The Jack’s got a point. I don’t think I was ever here, before.”

“What do you remember?” The Jack asks. “If anything?”

The Skull’s eye-lights flicker off. “Trees,” he says. “Trees and mountains.”

Two months later, they’re out of Chicago, heading toward the East Coast. The Skull drives part of the way, the heartbeat of his Green Core pulsing faster when the rolling peaks start to show in the distance. Within a few days, he stands alone at the peak of a Blue Ridge mountain and fills his bellows, and he imagines he can smell the pines and mist. His tears are silent, and he wipes them away before he returns to his waiting family.

“We can go,” The Skull says to them.

“So soon?” The Jack asks in concern. “Are you sure--”

“Everything that was here for me is long gone,” The Skull says. He puts a hand on The Jack’s shoulder. “I need to take care of what I have now.”

Rabbit’s got quite the collection of postcards and letters from -H, now. She flips through them sometimes, shuffling them and reading them at random.

Dee scared the crap outta us when we got to the Everglades, practically threw herself in the water. We’ll be dry cleaning her for weeks! First time I think I’ve heard her laugh like that, though.

Szarka asked us if we’d ever consider taking in another ‘bot. Turns out the man’s always wanted to build one of his own. I told him, I’m not sure we’re cut out to be godparents, and he’s got a ways to go before he’s ready to raise his own ‘bot. But we’ll see. World’s full of surprises. Hell, he might even get good at that guitar one of these days.

Szarka’s got himself a Blue-Cored boyfriend, some kind of dancing ‘bot, a real goody-two-shoes type. Don’t worry, we’ll make a scoundrel out of him yet.

A photo of The Jack braiding Dee’s hair, Tatters in her lap, sitting by the van. Szarka and The Skull sit on folding chairs beyond them, talking, watching the fireflies. Hare writes on the back: I don’t want anybody to worry about us.

There are days I don’t think about Pops at all.

It’s funny.

I don’t envy you anymore.

And one day, years later, Rabbit hears a sharp whistle behind her. And she turns to smile, because all the postcards in the world couldn’t replace the troublemakers come home.

They’ll die someday.

Of course they will. Some, sooner than others.

But not today.

Not yet.

Because with a bit of luck, they got out. They got another chance. Not because they deserved one-- chances aren’t deserved. Not because they needed it-- so many who need them don’t make it. Not because they loved enough or hated stronger or by anything they could have planned.

It was just luck. Just a good hand of cards on a stacked table.

And when all your life is a game of chance

well

i imagine quite a few followers of mine, over the last few days, have been looking at my blog and wondering to themselves, 'what is milgram, and why won't she shut up about it?'

well, lads, this post is for you.

WHAT IS MILGRAM, AND WHY I WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT IT: a masterpost

milgram is a bit difficult to explain. here's the short version: imagine the popular reality show 'survivor', only instead of real people, it's anime characters. instead of a desert island, it's a magical jail that makes you sing. and instead of an assortment of swimsuit-clad hotties, it's ten highly unstable individuals who have all been, to some degree, involved in a murder. does that clear things up? no?

well, here’s the long version:

a teenager called es wakes up in an eerie, mystical prison, in a guard's uniform, with no memory of who they are or why they're here. the helpful mascot character, a talking rabbit named jackalope, explains that this prison is called milgram, and es is its sole guard and jury. the prison contains ten prisoners, all of whom had committed some sort of murder, although the prison's definition of 'murder' can be a bit loose. none of the prisoners are quite sure how they got there, either, but it's clearly detached from the outside world, and they have no means of contacting anyone from home.

es' job is fairly straightforward. they have to get to know each prisoner, and then decide whether to 'forgive' or 'condemn' them. (this is often translated as voting 'innocent' or 'guilty', but rest assured, everyone is actually guilty. the question is not whether they've committed the murder -- it's whether they're considered justified in doing so.) there will be three trials: for each one, each prisoner will offer their testimony, and receive their verdict. their future in the prison will be affected accordingly.

the prison has a nifty schtick: the prisoners don't testify, exactly. instead, they're connected to a special machine that takes their innermost thoughts, feelings, and memories... and turns them into absolute bangers, paired with epic anime music videos. yes. their fate is decided based on the music video produced by their brain. what happens to those forgiven, and those condemned? well... that will be revealed in time.

that's that for the in-universe setup. in reality, milgram is an interactive multimedia franchise that delivers its story primarily through a series of youtube music videos. the songs are composed by renowned vocaloid producer deco-27 and the videos produced by otoiro. if you're into vocaloid at all, that's probably all you need to know it looks and sounds awesome. (if you're not: i'm telling you that right now.) each character's video has a distinct visual and musical style tailored to their personality, which makes for a very unique and diverse experience. and seriously, all those songs slap.

but the key gimmick is this: es is you. after each character's music video is released, a poll goes up where the viewers can vote to decide whether to forgive or condemn. the majority vote is then canonized, and future story developments will be affected by it.

milgram also explicitly urges you not to vote based strictly on morality. you can vote for whatever reason you'd like. maybe you just find this character cool, and want them to have a good time. maybe they annoy you, so you want them to suffer. maybe you just think this particular verdict would make for some really neat story developments! there's no right or wrong, which makes for some really fun and varied fandom discussions.

another aspect that makes it really engaging to me, is that the music videos -- meant to be the fruit of each character's subconscious -- are rarely straightforward. most of them require some degree of analysis on the viewers' end, and there's no concrete canon explanation provided for most of them. this creates really rich and interesting community discussion! nothing like watching a video for the first time, having no idea what to make of it, and scrolling down to read some passionate fan's frame-by-frame, 5000 word breakdown. it's awesome!

with ten prisoners (plus es, who is not nearly as much of a blank slate as the story would initially have you believe), every fan is guaranteed to find their own little blorbo. each character is incredibly fucked up in their own special way! they're all professionally voice acted and, in addition to their songs, have accompanying voice dramas where you can get to know more about them.

with the first two trials (=seasons) out of three complete, now’s a good time as any to jump in!

OKAY, SO HOW DO I GET INTO THIS THING?

first, a warning: in case that wasn't clear from all the murder, this is not a feel-good series. your favorite blorbo will inevitably turn out to be a horrible person who does horrible things, and will have horrible things happen to them. the videos include, in addition to the obvious violence and murder, themes of abusive relationships, bullying, suicide ideation and child abuse. and that's just off the top of my head.
