...I now wonder if Illusion Magic would be better described as Mind Magic.
Adrian Graye (who can only cast Illusion magic) uses it to read minds (or at least memories), and the whole "Illusions can't affect reality" makes perfect sense if they only affect perception.
And Gus picking up on that mind reading trick so quickly implies that this isn't some super obscure skill only Adrian knows. That it's maybe something all Illusionists know about.

Huh I'm kind of curious. All the other coven heads were set free or not arrested. Only Gray was. What did he even do?!
Tumblr media
WEEELLLLLL...
Okay. It’ll behoove me to start with the beginning. Which is to say I need to mention the general overarching situation within the Illusionist Coven.
Long story short (if I can manage...) is that the Illusionist Coven suffers from the chronic problem of @$$holes getting into authoritative positions. Reason is the entirety of the coven falls into one of two camps. Camp One is people who just really like illusion magic and want to do fun things and find reasons to use it. Camp Two is people who really like what illusion magic can do for them and use it to manipulate others and get what they want.
While camp two is the minority, it is unfortunately filled with very crafty people who are driven enough by their wants to claw their way into positions that will better allow them those wants. In other words - the Head Illusionist is almost always some kind of @$$hole because it’s those types that really want those positions and are willing to use their illusion magic to get there, stay there, and cause problems for any who challenge them.
The other Coven Heads are quite used to this.
Tumblr media
So someone like Adrian isn’t immediately going to blip their radar because he’s just another of a long line of arrogant snobs who got himself up higher than the other arrogant snobs. The reason that matters, though, is a general rule of thumb is coven heads don’t stick their noses in each other’s business. Kind of like, “Don’t tell me how to keep my house and I won’t tell you how to clean yours.” sort of thing. So, they may not immediately realize there could be misconduct going on. Now, if someone from within the problem coven reaches out to make such a claim and provides enough evidence, the other coven head or heads can then take it upon themselves to investigate. But suffice it to say, with the way things were inside the Illusionist Coven and the fact it's just kind of always been that way, no one reached out.
But then the Trials happened.
Every single coven head – even Darius, Eberwolf and Raine – had their Tenure Record brought before the Arbiter and subsequently exposed to the public.
Low and behold, Adrian had a LOT to be bashful about. And not in a good way. Because his tenure record was a LOT cleaner than a LOT of people remembered. AKA, he was falsifying the information. And, well, since he was on trial anyway, this was the perfect opportunity for those in his coven who felt he'd wronged them to finally speak up.
So, they did.
His only saving grace was he didn't have any sexual misconduct to his name, but the list of grievances against him was still impressive. From extortion of coven members and civilians (civilians being the term for random, off the street individuals that aren't involved in coven business), embezzlement of coven funds for personal use, general apathy and ineptitude towards coven affairs and needs, verbal and sometimes even physical abuse towards coven hands and members – the list goes on. Now, if it had been one or a couple instances of this nature, it's possible they may have been overlooked. In other words, has he had a few unsavory instances that are outweighed by his overall performance?
The answer was no.
He brought almost no benefit to his coven by holding the station of Head Witch – as the "good" elements of the record were soon found to be the result of Coven Hand efforts, or exaggeration, or completely fabricated events. The only thing really that could be said he'd done for his coven was foster growth. The Illusionist Coven had in fact grown by a third under his seven-year tenure.
However.
A lot of that was found to be the result of manipulation and suggestive guidance of younger, impressionable individuals. This was bad enough, as it was looked down upon to "trick" people into a coven for a multitude of reasons.
Going around forcing coven sigils onto CHILDREN was in fact a literal crime.
An individual must be a legal adult, seventeen years of age in the Isles, before they can receive a coven sigil. There are exceptions to this, such as a child prodigy who can be clearly seen as dedicated to the craft of their choosing with almost obsessive ardor. However, a proper evaluation must be done, of both the child and their parents or guardians, before such an allowance can be made. Even in such instances, the age is barred at fourteen.
Basically, he was a shitty person and his crimes caught up with him.
So yes, he was the only one of the Coven Heads who got arrested and is serving several sentences behind bars.
The person who's replaced him, however…
But that's a subject for another time~

Question for my favourite Owl House fans:
In the event of a zombie apocalypse, what coven would you want to be in?
(No you can’t control the zombies with abomination) (also you can’t be in the emperors coven that’s hax)

Realizing it's my own fucking story and I can worldbuild however I want is SO fucking dangerous I could say that curses are incredibly easy to perform in this world but they require you to know someone's face to cast them and then it'd be a small leap to say that masks helmets and other face coverings are commonplace because of this and bam I'm already like halfway to never having to draw a fucking face again

Say, do guys remember how in the first season of owl house when Gus sneaks Luz back into Hexide, he tells her about how he sometimes uses his illusion magic to write his notes for him? If illusions can write things down...does that mean that the illusion can be solid? I mean...they have to be if they can leave an impact on the world, such as writing things on paper, And if its true that the illusions can be solid then doesn't that mean that illusion magic can be used to make abominations without ACTUALLY using abomination spells? Or Making weapons that can actually hurt people? Or ingredients for potions and it would work?
In the episode where Gus tags along with Bria and Mattholomule to the goulderstone ruins, Bria says that illusionists are useless witches and that they would only use the stone to do high def party tricks, but what if she wasn't wrong? (the party trick part, im trying to explain how theyre technically the most poweeful) What if a goulderstone would make the illusions tangible? Wouldn't that make it possible for an illusionist to do all magic JUST by using illusion spells and no one would blink an eye? Wouldn't that mean that illusionists are actually the strongest witches and not the weakest?
If Adrien, Gus or the twins got their hands on a goulderstone then the sky would be the limit to their powers, they would literally be able to do anything with a twirl of their fingers, I know there were a lot of what ifs in this post but this could be big if those kids get their sh!t together😭

Alright, random idea, but what if Belos' slime-like form like, sort of possessed the Collector? And thanks to that possession, Belos now can use the Collector's powers? And then started using the Coven Heads as puppets? And their puppet form reflects on their Track?
Raine as a wooden puppet who has strings instead of eyeballs and moves like an actual puppet.
Darius as a goopy puppet that has the same face as those goopy fellas and only communicates in groans.
Adrian as a puppet that looks like a shattered mirror, like he has an eye of Gus, a part of his face looks like Hunter, the other part looks like Darius and such things like that, and it changes every few milliseconds.
The Healer Coven Head? She's a med kit that jumps/slides around.

I don't know how old the post was, but I like the idea of the construction and illusion covens having a small philosophy differences that leads them to butting heads.
With this in mind I now like to think that Mason and Adrian just hate each other because of all that.
I already headcannon that Adrian and Raine hate each other because of how different they are with performances and personality, but to add Mason to the mix here is really funny to me for some reason.
Adrian just has a lot of enemies. Raine, Gus, and now Mason lol.
I hadn't thought about bards in that equation yet!
So, I would think that Bards and Illusionists usually get along just fine, because they are both the creative type and often work together.
Usually. Because yes, Raine and Adrian can't stand each other.
Now, talking about Bard and Construction Magic, I'd say there is a bit more respect between those covens:
Playing an instrument is more physical than casting illusions and the effort and training needed is more apparent to a construction witch.
And of course, instruments need to be constructed, so bards are more likely to gain an appreciation for good craftsmanship.
But there are definitely also some bards that are elitist jerks, and some construction witches that see bards as weaklings.
Back to Adrian and Mason, I'd headcanon that the reason they don't get along is not because of their covens "rivalvry". Mason has no patience for such nonsense.
Mason dislikes Adrian because the latter is a terrible leader, and should never have been given the title of head witch. Mason can't stand incompetence.
Adrian on the other hand is fully on board with the whole rivalry between their covens and might even stoke the flames a bit if he can.

Well, no time to waste - I’m back and ready to continue this thrilling episode!

By this I’ll assume she means “we were once inseparable best buds but a tragic conflict and/or irreconcilable difference of opinion tore us apart”.

Principal Bump: well that was really rude but I can’t just say that to her
Does being at the top mean treating everyone around you like a potential servant?
