This really was the best thing Eda could have done for Luz. Teaching her spells individually is one thing. Teaching her how to find spells is another.
Eda might not know much about spell glyphs herself if they’re not common knowledge, and she doesn’t really need to. If Luz knows how to look for spell glyphs on her own, she’ll become much more self-sufficient. And she won’t ever be truly trapped, because the very world around her will show her the way out.

And now, let’s continue the episode! Our next scene opens with...
Tumblr media
...uhhh... whatever’s going on here?? King is doing his best, that’s what’s going on.
Eda’s looking very cool, but what’s she getting dressed up for?
Tumblr media
Ah, that would explain it!
In all honestly, I’m not entirely familiar with what a chaperone generally does at a prom, though? That being said, there’s a fair chance that it’s the exact opposite of whatever Eda’s going to do.
Also, King’s little baby apron is incredibly cute.
Tumblr media
grommentators.........
Oh, that poster is amazing.
It appears that Gus has been forgiven for not interviewing King last episode, and they are now teaming up to provide grommentary commentary and wear sunglasses indoors! Truly, a feat only the coolest of dudes can achieve.

Amity’s day just keeps getting worse, doesn’t it.
But the real question here is, can Hooty even be destroyed..?
Tumblr media
Ah, of course - Amity’s too responsible to leave Luz to handle the fight on her own, not to mention she probably knows Luz well enough by now to guess that she’s completely unprepared.
Still, unless I’m missing something, Grom is going to be happening on the same day, which means that any training efforts are likely going to be about as effective as Eda’s last-minute training session with Luz in Episode 5. Which is to say, they’re probably not going to accomplish much with such little time.
Tumblr media
Luz: >:3
So that’s the otter suit of legend, is it? How in the world did she bring that over with her?? How much stuff did she bring???

Hello once again, everyone! Thanks for being so patient as I’ve repeatedly failed to pull myself together and return to blogging. But no longer, I say! It’s time for Wingsy Live Blogs to live up to their name and do some liveblogging!
So, I have some bad news and some good news. The bad news is I’m still not entirely sure I’m in the right mental state for liveblogging, because I’ve been struggling with motivation in general... more or less for the better part of a year now. But the good news is I’m trying to return to being active regardless, because I’m starting to worry that if I wait for the “right time” to start blogging again I’m never going to get back to it, and I really want to watch more Owl House! I want to see what happens next, and I want to meet all those characters I’m vaguely aware of but haven’t yet encountered in the show itself!
So, the remainder of this post will mostly be dedicated to the observations I had when I rewatched Episode 7 several months ago and never got around to posting, and I’m going to skip most of my observations on episodes 5, 12 and 15 for the time being, with one exception that’s going to get a post of its own, because it’s actually the one thing that caused me to put my liveblog of Episode 16 on hold, so I think it’s pretty important. Following this post and the next, I’ll be picking Episode 16 back up where I left off.
Without further ado, my observations from rewatching Episode 7:
Tumblr media
Now that I’ve seen a little bit of these kids’ parents, I’d be willing to bet that the twins picked up this whole "tough love" thing from them - the mother in particular seems very much like the “it’s for your own good” type. That said, I haven’t yet gotten to observe the entire family dynamic, so I can’t be certain at this point.
Tumblr media
Ah, I forgot about this line. Fun!
The most important thing in this scene, though, was obviously the offhanded mention of Azura’s “goth phase"...spur-of-the-moment lie or the actual truth? And more importantly... foreshadowing or innocuous statement..?
You know, I do wonder if Luz's little doodle implying she wanted to impress Amity that she drew in Amity's private diary that she absolutely would look at later did anything to endear her to Amity, perhaps leading her to trust Luz was being genuine?
Actually, now that I’m thinking about that, I’m almost surprised it never got brought up afterwards... or maybe that’s why a drawing of Amity’s ended up in the book that she knew she was going to have to return to Luz..? Hmmm...
Assuming Otabin is a Boiling Isles-only literary figure and that Luz had only just learned he existed, it's really cute that she addresses him as "beloved work of children's fiction" based solely on the knowledge that Amity and a few kids she doesn’t know at all are fond of his story.
Even having rewatched, I’m still unsure how Amity figured out what happened to Otabin?? It's not as if he was targeting Luz from the start - he went after Amity first - so did she just notice what was on the book when seeing him grab Luz, and then maybe assumed that Luz did it or recognised that Luz was in a better position to fix it..?
Tumblr media
Considering this line, and then Amity's sad look after Otabin vanishes... I wonder if she’s thinking about someone else she's not still friends with. Probably a stretch, but you never know!

Quick update for everyone: I have been feeling a little sick for the past few days, so the liveblog of Episode 16 is briefly on hold until I’m either better or at least feel up to continuing. It shouldn’t be too long, though I’ll keep everyone updated! The source of the sickness isn’t anything to be concerned about either, so worry not!

You know, I wonder if these two ever had to do the Grom fight thing? Though if only one person is chosen per year, it would probably be just one of them.
Also, is that a colouring mistake, or is Emira’s outfit a slightly different colour than usual? That’s interesting, especially given her next line.
Tumblr media
Ah, the eternal struggle of being a sibling. It’s probably worse when you’re twins, though!
Tumblr media
Oh hey, looks like Luz did come prepared! At the very least, she’s put some amount of thought into this.

Ah, so she was genuinely trying to dissuade Luz. Yeahhh she definitely could have done better there.
But dramatic mirror-gazing aside, I do agree with her here: Luz isn’t taking the situation seriously enough, and I worry that it’s not going to end very well for her if she doesn’t look before she leaps. Experience may be a good teacher, but it’s not always a pleasant one.

Before anything else, I have to take a moment to celebrate the reveal of the remaining two tracks. Heck yeah!!
Since Viney is wearing a dark blue outfit in her flashback, I’m guessing that the “healing” track is the dark blue one. Wow, I was way off on that one! With this new knowledge, I imagine that the strips of fabric shown in the coven’s symbol and the banner earlier in this episode are actually bandages. That’s a neat little detail! And it definitely makes sense that healing would be considered an important enough ability to be the focus of one of the main 9 covens. I was sort of wondering how healing magic might factor into all this, and now I know.
Meanwhile, I’d hazard a guess that the “beast keeping” track is probably the orange one, given what’s been shown about it up until now. It seems the pig creatures that represent that particular coven aren’t the only beasts that can be kept by witches in this track, which leaves me wondering how many other beasts there are...
And now, onto the real focus of this bit!
I think it’s interesting that each of these magic combinations are reflected by Luz and her friends in some way. While Willow wasn’t exactly happy in the abomination track, she’s been in both the abomination and plant magic tracks, and Luz herself just tried to use oracle magic while in the potions track. Plus, the two classes she mentioned to Principal Bump earlier were most likely from the beast keeping and healing tracks respectively.
That aside, this sheds quite a bit of light on what Principal Bump said previously. “No witch” studies more than one track not because it’s impossible, but because no witch is allowed to. Students are punished for innovation (though to be fair these guys did make a bit of a mess in the process) and for thinking outside of the neat little boxes that each track pushes them into.
It’s a natural extension of the coven system; if students aren’t restricted to a single track from the beginning, they might not take as easily to being restricted to a single coven. But those who are different and those who want to do things differently will always find a way to get around the rules, regardless of how strictly they’re enforced.

I'm not sure why this took me so long to realize. Amity is the same kind of nerd Luz is. The Boiling Isles has manga. Amity in episode three was trying to be Willow's anime/manga *rival* to antagonize her into proving herself as good as Amity. And she chose that tactic *because* she's a nerd and she picked it up from anime/manga.
Ooooh, that's a neat angle I hadn't really considered for the introduction scene before! Some of Amity's actions in later scenes definitely suggest she's taking her dramatic cues from somewhere else...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...not to mention the scene where Luz challenges her to a duel in Episode 5. With all that considered, her deliberately trying to provoke Willow into a rivalry is quite a plausible interpretation of what she's doing in her introduction!

Time for a little more nighttime liveblogging! I’m getting more and more apprehensive about where this episode is going, but I’m sure Luz will be fine. Eventually. Probably.
Tumblr media
Is... is she aiming to win by confusing Grom so much it can’t figure out how to retaliate? Or is she trying to find a way to scare it back??
There’s a slim chance that more unorthodox tactics might actually be effective against it, since I imagine that the students chosen to fight would generally be more serious types. (Unless, say, Eda was chosen at some point while she was still attending Hexside..? She did kind of give off the impression that she has firsthand experience with this sort of situation... but it’s possible she was just being dramatic. It would be hard to say for sure either way unless it comes up in the episode, though.)
Tumblr media
gee I wonder what the source of Luz’s worst fear could possibly be

Are those... Luz’s school books? Does Hooty personally store them and get them out every day for her?? That’s very nice of him, actually. Thanks, Hooty!
Tumblr media
And in this shot, we see Willow and Gus being so disturbed by Hooty that their faces go way off model for some reason and it’s incredibly amusing to me. possibly because I’m a little tired
It appears that Gus still hasn’t gotten over the disastrous interview from last episode... but Willow’s last interaction with Hooty, as far as I recall, was in Episode 6, when the friendship trio took him on an exciting joyride, which absolutely does not justify this treatment whatsoever, and
...I’m sorry, I just can’t get over their faces oh my god
and their little flinches when he hoots right next to them as loud as he possibly can...
With that, and King being an Actual Cat, I’ve reached the opening for this episode! We’ll pick this back up tomorrow, or at least as soon as I can get back to it.
For now, goodnight!

Alright, who wants to welcome in the new year with a bit of liveblogging? I’m once again getting started a bit late, but let’s see how this goes!
Tumblr media
Ah, sounds lovely.
...was the original school perhaps built over some sort of old prison or containment facility for this creature, and that’s why it’s inexplicably buried under this particular building? Or was it created in some way after the school was already standing, and the only way they could think to get rid of it was to lock it in the basement??
Also, on an unrelated note what kind of spell is this..? It looks to be the same thing Eda used back in Episode 1, so I’m curious about what category of magic it falls under.
Tumblr media
Why does it have to be a student specifically, though?? Wouldn’t an experienced teacher be more effective against something like this?
Given that Grometheus takes the form of a creepy baby and then a clown, I’ll hazard a guess that the forms it takes represent its opponent’s greatest fears. I’m sure this is going to be great fun for Amity!

oh nooooo not the sad music... she’s got to be missing her mom too but she’s probably afraid of saying even that much
Tumblr media
So... is communicating solely through emojis normal for Luz? If not, that in itself might be suspect, though it could easily be written off as her being unusually busy.
The more important issue here is probably that the emoji she’s using is the exact opposite of how she’s actually feeling (oof) and that it’s really easy to lie over text and now that I think about it, have they even called each other at all since Luz left? I can imagine why Luz might be hesitant to call, but I’m a little surprised the subject hasn’t come up at all, since texting clearly isn’t an issue.
That being said, Luz has ample motive and plenty of opportunity to make excuses to avoid awkward phonecalls, so it’s possible she’s just been dealing with that issue the same way she’s been dealing with everything else involving her mom.
Tumblr media
Aaaaand that serious mood lasted all of five seconds. We can always count on you to lighten things up, Hooty!
...hold up, is that Luz’s signature on the picture in the background there? I wonder when she made that? (I must also wonder if it was visible in an earlier episode and I’ve just forgotten since, because that’s quite plausible all things considered. I can always go back and check, though!)

Eda’s little smile... cute
And wow, King suddenly got very enthusiastic about helping Eda get ready. I guess he’s fine as long as he doesn’t have to deal with clothes?
(Actually, wait, why was he complaining earlier about how he doesn’t wear clothes when the poster with him and Gus that he showed off immediately afterwards depicted him wearing clothes? It’s true he doesn’t make a habit of it, but he’s clearly willing to try clothes on when the situation calls for it, so was he just complaining for the sake of complaining?)
Tumblr media
Oh, I think Eda knows you pretty well at this point! What she appears not to know is how to successfully discourage you from making questionable life choices. But that’s not exactly her area of expertise to begin with, so... at least she made an attempt??
(Important but mostly unrelated question: do bad boys qualify for the Bad Girl Coven?)

You can see the exact moment her brain goes from “aw man, boring summer camp” to “what if summer camp... wasn’t boring??”
Guess she did figure out how to think inside the box after all! Just... maybe not the box her mom wanted her to.
