imagine : your f/o comforting you after a nightmare !

your eyes snap open with a sudden start, your breath hitching in your throat as you’re forcefully jolted from sleep. a bad dream, you think. hm. no matter the frequency of your nightmares, the feeling is still so jarring; waking up in a blind panic, your blood rushing icy in your veins as you tremble in the dark…not fun. you sit up in the bed, pupils darting around the room as you try to process your surroundings. you’re so unsettled and dazed that you barely register the sound of sheets rustling besides you.

“mm… hey…” your f/o murmurs hoarsely, stirred by your movements. they blink awake lazily before gazing up at you, and although their eyes are unfocused and glazed over with sleep, they still brim with sincere concern. “...are you okay?”

“mhm,” you nod softly, your hands still shaking a little as you try to calm yourself down. the familiarity of your darling’s presence grounds you in reality, and you feel your nerves ease ever-so-slightly. you take in a deep breath, wanting to reassure them. “just a nightmare. sorry…”

“ah,” your f/o hums in their sleepy voice, dismissing your apology. you’re never a bother to them. “c’mere”, they request, outstretching their arms languidly. your beloved looks so soft and sweet under the moonlight, instinctually jumping to your aid even when they’re too groggy to tell what’s happening, and you oblige gratefully. you can’t help but find comfort in their arms as they wrap them around you, your breathing and heart rate finally slowing to a normal pace.

your f/o pulls you toward them gently, cradling your body against theirs and allowing you to nuzzle your face in the crook of their neck. you inhale shakily before relaxing against them, their scent soothing you.

“shh, that’s it,” they encourage, their fingers caressing your back in a reassuring rhythm; tracing over your shoulder blades and ghosting against your skin. they press a soft kiss on the top of your head, feeling your tension ease up as you cling to them, your arms wrapping around their waist. “it’s okay, i’ve got you. you’re safe, i’m right here.” your f/o is full of affection for you, no matter the late hour.

as they continue their whispered endearments, their loving tone quells your anxiety fully, and it’s not long before you fall back asleep, snoozing peacefully in their tight embrace. your beloved smiles fondly at your resting form before shutting their eyes as well, content to doze off now that they know you’re alright. they may not be able to fix all of your troubles for you (much to their dismay), but you know that your darling will always be right by your side to help you through them.

Personally i think one of the main issues with anti ship discourse and generally exclusionary policies (especially within queer spaces but that’s a whole other post for another day) is that you cannot draw a line for what’s “correct” or “problematic” without hurting someone. We’ve seen it for ages with trying to exclude the “bad ones” and accepting the “good ones” and being obsessed with morality and purity

And all the label policing, thought policing and criminalization of fiction and thoughts distracts from actual real life violence and non-consensual /immoral acts. Once you start equating expression and coping through fiction and/or fantasies to real life desires and values we move away from harm reduction. When you start criminalizing thoughts/fantasies/kinks you deem immoral and marking them as just as bad as acting it out in real life you end up doing more harm than actually reducing/preventing it.

Believe it or not, most people actually know how to seperate fictional morality from decent humanity and empathy and common sense in real life. Why do you think morally grey characters, villain characters and dark romance/dark fiction is so popular?

Yeah sure, there might be people for whom fiction and reality blends together but i honestly think that that’s a problem that should be talked with a therapist about and is not caused by the fact that the taboo fiction exists.

I don’t personally like or agree with everything within proship spaces but i’m sure as hell not gonna harrass people for consuming certain media or accuse them of actual horrible crimes they have not committed.

Freedom in fictional media is important for self expression in many different ways - and media literacy is a critical skill all people should have

There is a vent in the last part (about pro ship:/+ wired shipping + block list) it's naturally negative so reading at your own risk.

So in the new Batman and Robin issue #7 Nika's sister making an appearance, got me thinking of other possibilities for sibling characters to come back.

Mostly I’m thinking about Respawn since he is Joshua Williamson's own character. And He made Respawn appeared in the last issue of Robin(2021), he also brought back Mara in that run too (just some appearance in the later issue).

And now Joshua Williamson is writing Batman and Robin, so naturally he can bring some characters back in this run. He had said in an interview that he might have figured out a way(try) to bring back Maya.

Throwback to 2022 of this old wip/art I made, is about what I think the emo teens of Lazarus squad dynamic would look like.

I imagine Nika and Respaw are irritated/tolerate with each other but would stay for Damian because Nika is Damian's girlfriend and they want to stick together. Meanwhile, Damian likes to include his half-brother in some fun activities (Respawn is acting reluctant bc of his own issues but he actually likes to have friends and feel include).

I haven’t finished this art bc I was going to add more wips (with other characters like Rose and Hawke) to make it a post. I didn't finish this art back then bc I was afraid Talia fans would be mad at me for drawing Respawn.

Trust me, I hate that Talia gets associated with Deathstroke like this, but I think Respawn is a confused/mistreated teen character and Damian (bless his heart and soul) still wants to be his brother regarding the whole mess. I will explain/talk more about my thoughts on Respawn as a character and his situations once I finish these drawings and get ready to post them.

Writing/typing words is harder than drawing for me personally. Drawing is like channeling my energy into a picture and forming an atmosphere and hopefully people will understand what thoughts and feelings I was trying to convey. Writing is using more brain powers to choose the correct and cohesive words, so people would not misunderstand what I'm talking about. Especially when English is not my first language, and even so I normally don't talk(write) much in my mother tongue either…(I'm not a quick thinker, it took me a longer time to think things through, writing literally exhausted me physically and mentally more than drawing.)

It doesn't mean I don't enjoy writing, it's just not my first choice to convey thoughts… but considering I can't draw everything I have in my mind and it takes even longer time to finish any art, I just need to write down things first from now on. Tumblr is the only place I can think of that has this longer text feature blog post and I'm more familiar with this platform format. So I will still be here posting my fan content.

I must say I will forever hate respawn x flatline as ship, cus I know who started this ship and their reasons behind it—Don’t let the new character develop naturally as the story goes, let’s put them in made-up weird situations first so I can prop up my own ship!😍 And get both of the new characters out of the way, since no one would defend them so I can fanon the hell out of them by making them look bad all around!🤞 (What if I stone you first hand🪨🪨💥)

And I will continue to dislike/against any shipping Damian's sibling to Nika. I simply don't like the unnecessary sibling conflict just for romance tropes! So go away boooo I hate you‼️ Not to mention the ignoring of different age range multi-ship hide behind poly… that's straight up proshipping I hate you even more!!👎

Also for people who said Nika should be crush on Damian's mother instead of him… I hate you twisted proshipper rotten smooth brain‼️‼️ She dating a boy her age and has mutual connections with him, why would she crush on her boyfriend's mother instead?? Just because Nika is a big fan of Talia??? So you telling me young ppl can't idolize adults normally without being labeled as romantic nowadays huh??( Not saying you can't crush on adults, but why crush on your boyfriend's mom? ) Your weird ass mind is showing with this ass hc be fr. Again, why would you imagine that? You just wanted to push a fake narrative of Nika being wired so you could have an excuse to make Talia and Damian dislike her (which is not true), but in fact is YOU are the weird one projecting your twist thoughts/hate onto Nika‼️💥🪨🪨

Honestly I can’t understand the problem with proshiping. (Idk if is spelled that right) maybe I’m missing something here but I can’t figure out why someone would unfollow someone else simply for making content? What’s the big deal? What’s so bad about it?

My opinion:

Reading comprehension is currently at an all time low rn. People don't understand unreliable narrators, or dark subjects. They don't know how to curate their feeds to avoid the things they don't like, no they expect others to do that for them. To keep them safe.

People don't want shades of grey, they want black and white. In a world so soul sucking and out of their control, they want a villain to blame and groups to control. And if you create content they enjoy, then you must be flawless and held accountable for every single thing you do. Or else.

They think if something makes them uncomfortable it must be destroyed, not realizing that content that makes them upset can be cathartic for another. Trauma isn't some easy thing to deal with, the brain gets all twisted up. Fiction is a safe way to explore one's own trauma, to relive it in a safer setting.

This is also me being charitable, because some people just wanna hurt others. Some people are just mean because they like being mean.

Afterthought: No one gets to decide how much trauma someone goes through to EARN the right to create dark stuff :/ People will ask that, never ever EVER tell strangers on the internet your trauma, because it will never be enough for them. You don't even need to be 'traumatized' to explore dark content, or need it to cope, you don't have to prove that you were hurt enough to earn that right.

(Sorry, brain dump ahead)

I need to tell y’all something, but I feel like only my older followers will understand what I’m talking about

When I was writing my informative paper on proshipping and anti shipping, including all the arguments for and against each side, I realized something very important.

I have family that I live with. I have friends with their own families. I have pets. I have a job now with coworkers who I care about. And while none of these things give a shit about fiction and internet morals (hell, I’ve had conversations with just about everyone I know about this stuff, and we all agree for the most part), I would give a shit if I was doxxed and put the people in my life in danger. I realized that if I post that document, and the right people saw it, I would put them in danger. I’m not willing to be a martyr for fandom drama. I’ve seen what antis are capable of doing, I’ve seen how they’ve indirectly killed people and how they’ve directly ruined lives. I don’t want that. I care about, not only my own well being, but also the people who I care most about. That’s not to say that anti harassment and anti censorship aren’t important to me, by any means. But my real life takes precedence over my internet life.

If there’s one thing I learned from that paper I wrote (but didn’t post), it’s that the internet is cruel and unjust. It’s that I could never feel comfortable with myself if I labeled myself as an anti. I made it clear that I’m proship, and that paper I wrote is the reason I’ve come to this conclusion. I did my own reaserch, form an unbiased standpoint, while choosing to side more with antis, and I came out of it as proship. My tastes in fiction have not changed. But my understanding of the topic did change. That paper has nearly a year’s worth of research put into it, and it would piss people off. It would, more importantly, piss off antis. I’ve seen what happens when antis get pissed, and I’ve been on the receiving end of the mild version of it. Many times. I’m not willing to go through the version where they don’t hold back. My paper included many documented examples of it, and since the time of writhing it, there have been so many more. I’m not going to be another one of those people who have their lives ruined over stupid fandom discourse.

It’s more than just internet drama to me though, regardless. I know that this is more than just fandom. At its core, it’s all forms of fiction and what is and is not acceptable. It’s about bullying and harassment, and how it keeps getting worse as time goes on. Not just internet harassment either. It’s happening in the American school system every day, people I knew when I was in high school were forced to drop out, get their ged, or do online schooling because of the real world harassment they were receiving. The way that my generation, and the generation bellow me, views other people is appalling. Bullying is just “funny”, and I can’t stand it. The internet is at the core of this issue, of course. It’s taught impressionable minds that other people are like npcs. Cancel culture has taught us that if you step out of line, even for non-issues, then you are the scum of the earth and deserve what’s coming to you. And if you see someone who steps out of line, you need to be ruthless. It’s better to attack other people, so long as the negative attention isn’t on you. Even the older generations are affected. This isn’t something we should be ignoring, but we are. Antis in fandom spaces might seem like it’s not a big deal, but it’s a rabbit hole that runs deeper than people realize.

My paper made me realize this, it made me realize that society sucks, the government sucks, the internet sucks, and I’m pro-freedom to do whatever you want so long as it doesn’t hurt real people. At the end of the day, I’m not going to be a martyr. I refuse that role. You shouldn’t want to be a martyr either. Be kind to people, that’s what’s important. Create spaces where people know they are safe to do whatever the hell they want so long as it doesn’t hurt real people. Stand up for real people who are being hurt by others. Stop harassment, stop hate. I’m tired of seeing people hurt each other over fictional characters who don’t exist. Don’t put yourself or others in danger. Block people who spread hate, and don’t give them a platform to be hateful.

I’m rambling, but for me, there’s no real good outcome unless people suddenly realize that being hateful because of fiction is dumb. I’ve become tired of trying to explain to antis why it’s dumb, there’s no way to talk to many of them. I also can’t risk the safety of others for an issue that only I’m focusing on. There’s other problems in the world, and in my personal life. I just want to be kind, at the end of it all. And I want others to feel the same. But then again, just being kind to others would solve a lot of the worlds problems if everyone followed that rule.

I need to shut up now though, sorry for the dump lol

I made a mistake and posted something I shouldn’t have that was a breach of privacy on my behalf (and was in the wrong to do so) without knowing the history behind a particular infamous/“proship” artist. The tweet in question was a photo of their booth at the convention I went to this weekend with the caption “my jaw fucking dropped.” It was meant for my active followers, but it should’ve stayed confined to dms with people who I knew wouldn’t instigate anything else. I only vaguely knew about lunasol through the grapevine (mostly just that they had a reputation and one of their tweets that reads like a villain monologue that I found funny) and I had no idea that they had been ran off of Twitter and attempted suicide due to constant harassment and threats of doxxing. I honest to god had no clue.

However, despite me apologizing, acknowledging that I was wrong, deleting my posts and owning up to my mistake, this artist’s group of supporters keep finding new ways to put words in my mouth and turn what I say against me. And like. I don’t even know what to do at this point? Because no matter what I say or what I do, in their eyes I’m always gonna be “the bad one” and they’re gonna continue to send me death threats until I deactivate or kill myself. If I say nothing, I’m not owning up to it. If I say something, I’m fishing for attention. If I say “hey please stop sending me threats on all my socials,” I’m playing the victim. If I tell these people “hey what you’re saying isn’t true” or defend myself at all against false claims when defense is due, I’m not “genuine enough.” It’s a lose lose situation.

I’ve directly apologized to the artist in question and I’m not gonna post all of the intricate details about it, but pretty much they don’t want to hear it. I can understand not having the mental energy to reason with someone you’d put your defenses up for, but when I reach out in an attempt to reconcile with the hurt party and stop something that’s gone too far and they essentially tell me to go fuck myself, there’s not much I can do at that point either. Some people will never like me, and not everyone will accept an apology. That’s okay.

Basically. I was very stupid and I’m paying the price now

Hi, if you don’t mind me asking, how exactly is kyman not a proship? Like, it’s shipping a jewish person with a n@tzi/antisemite. I’m not accusing you of shipping for that reason, but it’s hard to look at that ship as anything else. Also I’m genuinely curious, but what is the general appeal of the ship to kyman shippers anyways? Like I don’t really ship any of the sp characters anyway, but I can understand why many ship style, bunny etc because those characters do actually have moments and interactions in the show where they are caring for each other or bonding together which can be interpreted as them liking each other. Cartman is constantly ridiculing Kyle for his heritage on a daily basis, humiliating him, attempting to kill him at certain points, I mean basically just making his life a misery. I’ve seen some examples a few Kyman shippers have tried to use to as Kyle and Cartman liking each other, but they normally don’t make sense as within the context of those examples it’s clear that those reasons are anything but that. However, one episode that really makes me question it is Ginger Cow, like after everything Cartman put Kyle through in that episode, I just can’t understand how it could be shipped after that ( there are other later episodes that also make me question this, but the shit Kyle went through and was treated because of Cartman makes me feel so sorry for him and I can’t see any reason to how people can ship them after it). I hope you know when I’m saying and asking you all of this, I mean absolutely no judgment. These are simply reasons why I can’t ship it or understand why people ship it, but I’m interested to know why some people do and if there are reasons besides mine or that debunk some of what I’ve said.

Anyways, now to answer your question. The n*zi thing is obviously the biggest glaring issue in this and I do agree that it’s a problem, kyman is by no means perfect. However I would also like to point out that cartman was a child, and this really depends on how you view kyman and this can vary from person to person but I feel like over time cartman has grown to mature over his antisemitism, hell he even went from someone who liked h/tler to someone who thinks he was awful. I feel like this all depends on how you view it and how much you the viewer are willing to forgive him for past actions. Additionally, I don’t actually think cartman hates jewish people. This is just a theoryyy and by no means confirmed but I think that the main reason cartman makes fun of jewish people is to get a rise out of kyle (eg: Smug Alert!). cartman has been shown to literally make fun of butters for being jewish despite butters not in any way being jewish. I feel like intention really matters i dont think that cartmans hatred for pretty much any group of people (except maybe hippies) is actually stemmed from actual discriminatory hatred, hell some of the worst his racism gets is stereotyping. Which is still a form of racism but it’s also something to consider. Cartman has said himself he doesn’t hate people of color, he hates hippies. Now do I think just because he doesnt hate minorities that doesnt make him racist?? no, absolutely not, hes still a fat intolerant racist fuck. Again, kyman is NOT healthy by any means, it is extremely toxic.

Many antis, and even some kymannies claim that kyman is abusive, however i have a lot of points to counter this. I firmly believe that abuse requires a power imbalance, which I dont think kyman has. Many people claim that cartman is the main problem but.. no?? kyle is also toxic and mean as hell to cartman, now ill admit its a bit more justified and hes not as sinister as cartman but i dont think its enough so to create a power imbalance. I think that theyre mutually toxic and i also think they thrive off of that. now again, and i know im repeating myself but i need to make this clear. just because its not abusive doesnt make it okay or healthy.

Now that I’ve admitted that its got its problems and such, on to your next question… why do i like it if its so bad? This ones both an easy answer and extremely long.

The first thing I’d like to talk about is that I find it extremely interesting to take characters that HAVENT shown any romantic or caring feelings towards eachother and put them together because it can make an extremely interesting story. I read more 50k+ fics than one shots n such and I feel like I’ve found kyman fics to be the most interesting because yeah, they do hate each other. This creates a huge block for the author to find their way around and usually they find some really interesting ways to do it. I’m definitely in preference for the “oh fuck wait do i like them?! of all people, fuck” trope than cute friends to lovers. My favorite ship of all time is actually shin soukoku from bsd for the same reasons :). I’ve always found enemies to ???? to lovers more interesting than anything. Not because I particularly like the relationship but I like the story behind it and knowing that they had to go through so much to get there. Having little canon care for each other is essentially a blank slate, meaning that the author can do pretty much whatever they want to get them to like each other without even needing an au.

Anyways, there are actually many reasons from canon that I have for liking them so much. The first and main reason is that they have a back and forth dynamic i feel like they both thrive off of. Cartman loves getting attention from kyle and I feel like kyle with his chronic savior complex gets something out of having someone he can shit on for being a horrible person. He keep talking about how they should stop hanging out with cartman but.. he never actively does anything about it. The only time he really did was during fatbeard and that is something but you’d think that if he hated him so much he wouldn’t sit with him at lunch and still hang out with him regularly.

The main episode that made me like kyman was crack baby athletic association. It didn’t start out great but I also think that it shows that they can get along. Now this doesn’t happen often but It’s an interesting point that it’s possible. There are plenty of episodes that have made me like it (crack baby athletic association, into the panderverse, le petit tourette, jewpacabra, smug alert, cartman finds love, tonsil trouble,) and there are plenty of episodes that have made me dislike it (passion of the jew, ginger cow, cartman finds love, tonsil trouble, imaginationland, etc)

However I don’t think that they.. completely hate eachother? You mentioned how many kymannies use parts of the show as evidence that aren’t really that good at making a point. So here some of my own moments that I think display at least some form of care.

In kenny dies, kyle is willing to hold cartman, now I know this was primarily manipulation on cartmans part, but I think its also good to note how kyle reacted to this situation. He hates cartman more than anyone and when he cried he held him, now im sure kyle would do this for almost anyone but its especially interesting when its someone he hates. He had enough care that he would be willing to show a sense of vulnerability in return.

Also, cartman has told kyle he loves him twice according to my knowledge. One of the times was genuine. In le petit tourette after kyle tries to sabotage cartman’s event but it backfires because cartman was scared of it and he unintentionally saved him. What i find really interesting isn’t kyle saving him because that has nothing behind it, but instead how cartman reacted. He grabs on to kyle and tells him he loves him. “You must, really care about me” I know that this moment doesnt last long but it’s still worth mentioning because I fully believe it’s genuine. Cartman has absolutely no reason to lie here, hes vulnerable and scared.

Pretty much the entirety of the faith hilling episode, they have something in common and they work together. It really showcases that even if they hate eachother theyre still, something. As said in the casa bonita episode “We’ve been through a lot together, and I know that might not make us friends but it makes us something” and I am aware that this is just a manipulation tactic but I think it also is a good point. They might not be friends but they are something, there is something there beyond just hate. They can get along, and they do tend to stick together through all of the drama that happens throughout the show and it’s nice to know that thats there.

So essentially think of ships that already have moments together as sprouts, all they need is a little more care to bloom. However Kyman and other ships with only some moments like those are more like seeds. The creator needs to add more for it to grow like the others. I found that the way that they do that is very interesting because there isn’t a set way that they learn to get along.

Addionally yes ginger cow sucked ass and thats a perfectly good reason to hate the ship, this is just why i choose to anyway.

okay, gotta be honest here. being proship - being a comshipper - being a comshipper to cope with the specific trauma i have endured - when people go online and say “i don’t support comshippers except for if you’re coping with trauma”… it doesn’t actually help me the way you think it does. see the issue therein is that i shouldn’t have to tell people that i’m traumatized at all. i shouldn’t have to divulge private details of the things i have been through against my will to prove to someone that i have the license to ship and draw fictional characters. it’s invasive, frankly, it’s private, no one is entitled to know those details about me. i don’t want to share upsetting chapters of my life story with strangers over pixels. even if by that logic i would be completely allowed to ship what i want - i don’t want to have to divulge it at all. by forcing people to share private traumas publicly and be judged on if they’re horrifying enough to “count”, making them relive details of them… you aren’t being the ally you think you are, man.

“Remember,” said Donnie, “Stay in the boat.”

Raph gave a grunt that could have been either acknowledgment or annoyance, it was hard to tell. He kept his stare fixated on the murky water in the tunnel ahead of them. From somewhere down the shadowed corridor echoed the sound of sloshing water and guttural hisses.

Above them, safe on a maintenance platform that was riveted to the sewer wall, April trained her camera on the same tunnel that Raph was fixated on. The beam from her camera was hardly bright enough to illuminate anything other than the immediate area, so the tunnel remained shrouded. Even so, Donnie could see the mechanism in the lens focusing and retracting as she tried to zoom in and catch a shot of what lay in the darkness beyond.

“So they’re like pets?” she asked.

“They’re not tame enough to be considered such, no,” said Donnie. He adjusted the rudder. “We just make sure they have enough food to support their broods. And we keep exits to the drainage tunnels shut, so they can’t escape into the wild.”

“And why, exactly, does your family like to maintain a colony of sewer gators?”

“Keep out humans,” said Raph. “And for wrestling practice.”

“Yes, Raph does enjoy agitating the gators and tussling with them every once in a while,” said Donnie. “Which he is not going to do today, right Raphael?”

Raph shot him a dirty look. “I would win.”

“We all know that,” said Donnie. “But the point of today is to make sure our team wins. Both of us, in the boat, crossing the finish line. Those are the rules.”

Leo smirked as he set the oars in place on the boat he and Mikey shared. “Last year, Raph almost ditched our chances when he tried to dive overboard just to wrestle the alpha.”

“He looked at me funny,” said Raph.

“And I’m glad you had it in you to forgive him, otherwise we wouldn’t have won and I would have been angry with you all year,” said Leo.

“I still don’t see why we have to decide the teams with rock-paper-scissors,” Mikey grumbled. “I always lose the first round, and I never get to be on Raph’s team.”

“Don’t worry, little brother,” said Leo. “Things are going to be different this year.”

“Bold claim from the boat that doesn’t have Raph,” said Donnie.

“Mikey deserves a win.” Leo smiled. “So I promised him one.”

April quirked an eyebrow at the confidence in his voice. Even though this was the first time she’d witnessed the Lair Games, she’d heard enough of the boys’ explanations and retellings to have an understanding of how the events worked. Apparently, Raph was undefeated when it came to Sewer Gator Slalom.

Unlike a typical slalom, there was no set course and the waterway lacked any markers or flags for the teams to loop their boats around. Instead, the ‘slalom’ part of the game referred to dodging the gators themselves, as they were abnormally large, aggressive, and protective of their territory.

Raph, however, was able to keep any of the oversized alligators from attacking his boat just by sheer intimidation. He would growl at any of the approaching predators and lash out, chasing them away before they could attack. It left a clear path for the boat to sail easily through the tunnel, so whichever brother happened to be on his team was guaranteed a win.

Donnie latched an oar into its eyelet and swung it experimentally. He caught the side of Leo and Mikye’s boat, making it jostle in the water. “Mikey wins the firecracker game every year, so there’s nothing wrong with Raph having a signature event.”

“Except when I never get to be on his team!” Mikey fumed.

“Funny, you don’t seem to care about teams when it comes to your relay of chaos,” said Donnie.

“You all could still try and run if you wanted, you’re just too slow to keep up with me and you know it!”

“Shh-shh,” said Leo. “You’re riling up the gators.”

Sure enough, the booming echoes of the argument bouncing off the tunnel walls seemed to have increased the amount of splashing and hissing coming from the waterway. Leo turned the spotlight lantern on the prow of the boat towards the sounds. The beam caught a flash of a massive spiked and scaly tail as it disappeared beneath the surface.

Donnie watched as April leaned over the safety railing – probably trying to get a closer shot of the giant alligators. “If you go in headfirst, I’m not diving after you,” he called up to her.

“Are you sure I can’t ride along? Get a closer shot?” she asked.

“We need a perfect winner’s photo as we cross the finish line in victory,” said Leo. He struck a pose. “Be sure to get my good side.”

“You don’t have a good side,” said Mikey.

“Don’t worry about trying to get Mikey in the photo,” said Leo.

“I’m gonna torch your room,” said Mikey.

“Try it, and I will chuck you overboard before we get to the first archway.”

“Ah, team-building banter,” said Donnie. “Please, keep at it. If you take each other out now, Raph and I can go straight to the victory lap.”

As the boys continued to bicker, Splinter clambered up the maintenance ladder to join April on the platform and unfurled the starting pennant. “First team to retrieve their flag from the alligator lair and return to cross the finish line wins the event. Both members must be present and accounted for, and all persons and appendages must remain inside the boat. No explosives, quantum engines, or portals permitted.”

“Sound like you’ve already prohibited very specific methods of cheating that would apply to each of them,” said April.

“You understand us so well already,” said Splinter. He smiled and raised his arm. “On your mark, get set, ROW!”

Leo and Mikey each heaved on their own set of oars, while Donnie manned one array on his boat and extended the spider arms from his battleshell to reach the second. Raph never did any rowing. He crouched at the bow, eyes narrowed, a low growl rumbling intermittently in his throat.

With their boat riding higher in the water due to less weight, Leo and Mikey pulled ahead. Beyond them, tell-tale swells in the water outlined the shape of three submerged alligators as the first defenders of the lair veered towards the boat that was in the lead.

Leo hauled forward on one oar and back on the other, sending the boat into a sharp turn that would steer them out of the way. One gator turned to follow, while the other two swerved toward Raph and Donnie instead.

Raph’s growl crescendoed. One alligator diverted aside, heading back toward the first boat.

But the other, heftier and bolder than its companions, continued on a beeline towards them, its mouth gaping.

Raph bared his teeth, growled, and punched at the gator’s head.

The heavy smack snapped the reptile’s jaw sideways, and more than one tooth went skimming across the surface of the water. The gator let out what could only be called a yelp – a sound Donnie hadn’t known they were capable of – and veered sharply away, its nose crooked and bloody.

Donnie smirked as the waterway in front of them cleared.

Deeper into the lair, the situation only compounded. More alligators slinked off their concrete shoreline nests to crowd the water, torpedoing toward Leo and Mikey the moment they heard Raphs snarls or caught sight of his bared teeth. Soon, Donnie and Raph had pulled neatly into the lead while Mikey and Leo were slowed by the ever-growing swarm of gators encircling their boat. They practically had no clear water to steer through anymore.

Donnie gave them a sarcastic salute with one of his spidershell arms.

The far end of the tunnel was now in sight, and Donnie could see the flag dangling from its hook. No alligators blocked their way, this would be an easy snatch–

“Hey, Raa-aaph!”

Several yards behind them on the other boat, Leo dangled Mrs. Cuddles over the stern of his boat, the tip of one stuffed, rainbow ear pinched between his fingertips.

Raph gasped.

“Wait, Raph, no!” said Donnie. “That’s not your real Cuddles, it’s a decoy, don’t fall for it–"

Leo dropped the stuffie.

Mrs. Cuddles hit the surface, and the water churned with snapping teeth and thrashing jaws.

Raph dove headfirst overboard, thrashing through the water with all the grace of an elephant in a bathtub. He charged into the center of the mass of alligators, bellowing, throwing punches and kicks as well as was possible in twelve feet of murky sewer water. Gators snapped and writhed all around him, sending up geysers that caught Donnie in their spray, drenching him and slogging the bottom of the boat.

At the center of the living maelstrom, shredded pieces of colorful fabric and clots of sogged stuffing spread across the surface like the detritus of a shipwreck.

Before Donnie could even holler for his brother to get back here – to salvage the whole situation – an alligator rammed into his Raph-less, defensless vessel. It capsized.

The only consolation Donnie had was that Leo and Mikey weren’t far behind in taking a dunk with him.

Long minutes later, Donnie, Leo, and Mikey all finally managed to extricate themselves from the frenzy of the alligator lair and flounder back to the starting line. They dragged themselves dripping back onto the walkways.

“I hope you’re happy,” said Donnie, fixing Leo with a scathing glare.

Leo wrung out his mask tails. “I think Gator Wrestling should be a new event for next year.”

“That’ll just be another category for Raph to win!” said Mikey.

“If there are even any alligators left,” said April. She was panning her camera across the water. “I think you may have inadvertently decimated your colony.”

Scales, claws, and teeth floated across the surface. The growls and hisses from the gators had faded to almost nothing. From the darkened archway of the reptile lair came a nasty crack, followed by a heavy splash.

Silence.

Out of the darkness, the bulky form of a familiar snapping turtle came cutting through the canal. Raph slogged up onto the walkway, the lower half of a gator’s jaw in one hand and the remains of Mrs. Cuddles’ ear in the other. He stomped toward Leo.

“Hey, buddy,” said Leo. “Guess what? Donnie was right, that was just a decoy. Your real Mrs. Cuddles is totally safe back in–gaaahh!”

The newest event added to the Lair Games was not, in fact, Gator Wrestling.

Instead, it was Punt-a-Leo.
