the recent outpouring of s.eymour apologism i’ve witnessed on twitter recently seems a bit like goalpost moving...

im not going to link it bc i really don’t care . that much (any of y’all can dm me if you really want); but i’ve looked into the dynamic being spoken of a lot and i think ‘no words of b.oleyn’ speaks a lot to how this family saw themselves and what they had taken part in.

im going to try to put this more succintly / abbrev version of what i messaged a friend recently:

as to the levied charge of hypocrisy, the emotional reality when we speak to c.atherine of aragon vs a.nne boleyn vs j.ane seymour is just vastly different...

while i don't think anyone would say c.atherine’s reproductive history was not sad, there was at least, a buffer...

did the boleyns take advantage of the fact that she had no surviving sons? absolutely, without a doubt. arguably that is rather morally grey

but there is a HUGE difference btwn taking advantage of an opportunity that presents itself nine years after the queen's last pregnancy & stillbirth

and taking advantage and discrediting one ...what, a week? a month? after her last miscarriage... i judge the circumstances differently because they are different...

& im just not about humbly accepting this false equivalency being banded about , like...

there is a huge difference btwn encouraging a trial into the validity of a royal marriage again, near-decade after, vs a woman being arrested FOUR MONTHS after she has had a miscarriage

& whether or not the s.eymour involvement encouraged arrest specifically, clipping along at a nice pace to accept it and enjoying your sister living & dining in style as queen-to-be while the woman with that title about to be tried is confined in the tower... they're not the same, i do find it egregious and very different than the 1st scenario.

there were people ousted from power in every promotion the b.oleyns and their affinity rose. anne was made marquess after c.atherine’s exile. cranmer was promoted after warham died of natural causes. im sure g.eorge was made viscount at the expense of ... someone, certainly t.homas b.oleyn was made earl of ormond at the expense of some relatives. anne became queen after c.atherine’s demotion. e.lizabeth became princess after mary’s.

there were people executed for not recognizing the royal supremacy, which one could argue was the same as denying the b.oleyn marriage (it’s a grey area, arguably they were connected, but it’s hard to argue anyone was executed for eschewing the act of succession alone, more and fisher both pointedly said they were not against that element). but there’s hardly the brutal 1:1 that exists in regards to the b.oleyn downfall. henry & jane received a dispensation to wed on the day anne was executed, they were betrothed the next, wed ten days after that, and j.ane was queen. e.dward s.eymour was made viscount eighteen days after his technical predecessor (brother to the queen) , the viscount rochford, was beheaded.

‘but you’re just a hypocrite for admiring the b.oleyns and not the s.eymours’, eh, i think the reason that there are more fans of the former than the latter is that they operated differently & there were different circumstances surrounding their respective rises to power. to ‘win’ in this system always required ruthlessness, and it always meant someone else lost. ‘to the victor, the spoils’, sure, but ‘to the victor, the spoils’ hits different when the ‘spoils’ are inextricably tied to the reality of the orphaned children & widows of the judicially murdered upon the exact moment of victory (respectively, the moment of the betrothal of h.enry&a.nne, & the moment of betrothal of h.enry&j.ane...only true of the latter, and essentially-- what, thirteen days gone-- only true of the latter, even if one switches ‘betrothal’ to ‘wedding date’- -the closest it comes to for the former is the arrest of bishop fisher in march 1533, previous to annulment of henry’s 1st marriage).

& that’s what bothers people, as far as i understand it. this wasn’t game of thrones, this really happened. whether or not someone ‘agrees’ with the kind of language used to describe what happened, there isn’t any denying the order in which it did, nor the coinciding events. if it doesn’t disgust you, it’s your prerogative. if you believe animus towards the complicit actors/beneficiaries is mutually exclusive to animus towards the principal agent/s (depending on which theory you go by, henry himself vs henry and cromwell vs cromwell alone, although any besides the middle is a bit of a stretch imo-- henry was at the very least the final say/ultimate power), well, that is, too, but you would be incorrect, even if you have, at times, personally come across one or the other.

#'it could not have been FORESEEN' (re: the boleyn downfall)#to the fatal degree it came to #is that* what bothers people?#is that what people believe? bcus i haven't seen that outside of mantel (fictionally) positing it was jane that left the poison pen drawing #in anne's household #or is it that no one of the faction (as the argument goes there was) seemed to think it was a bridge too far when it did go that far #that no one expressed many qualms and the haste with which it was all done also seeming readily accepted #that they readily accepted all that bloodshed with no compunction for the 'greater good' of an aim that was never reached #'your worst sin is that you have destroyed and betrayad yourself for nothing.' fin.#and im speaking more to the faction in that sense #i have very little sympathy for the most complicit members of that faction.#i have a hard time shedding a single tear for carew in the same way i have a hard time shedding a single one for cromwell #'well all these people had to die but at least mary was reconciled to her father after doing exactly what anne had exhorted her to do for #two years! oh wai-'#*any qualms #*betrayed #more abbrev: well. failed step one #the closest we get to qualms is someone (idr who exactly)#saying it would touch henry's 'honor' if no one except smeaton confessed #well. sucks to suck .

okey so i need some tv recs for this hiatus 911 fan overall procedure fans i guess that's all the vibe i can think of to ask lol so hit me with your recs

EXCELLENT! So glad you’ve come to me Nonnie. I am honored. This is in no particular order but in terms of general procedurals with similar 911 vibes I’ve got a couple:

1. Sirens

It’s about a paramedic team in Chicago and it’s fucking hilarious. We're talking laugh out loud can still quote it from memory hilarious. There’s two seasons and each episode is about 25 minutes so it’s easy to get through. There is a British counterpart that is also funny but it’s definitely a different tone for sure.

2. ER

I always describe 911 to people as ER for first responders. Part of that is because it’s so episodic. It gets really melodramatic at times and there are a LOT of story lines but for the most part the general stakes keep to one episode at a time and the show gives you permission to let things go which is nice. I’m a fan of the earlier seasons as opposed to the later seasons but Angela Bassett is in the last season. Lots of great guest spots and very character driven.

**Characters do die in this show so be aware of MCD warnings. No one is safe in that show. Except maybe Noah Wylie but that's cus it's Noah Wylie.

3. Numb3rs

It’s an awesome crime procedural with a twist on it. The oldest brother, Don, is an FBI agent who has his baby brother, Charlie, help him solve crime using math. This show has all the tropes too. Brother relationship, found family, etc etc.

4. Psych

It’s a procedural with a much lighter tone. Shawn pretends to be psychic and solves crime. It’s chaotic and messy and wonderful and perfect.

**Gives me coming home from the pool and vegging on the couch summer vibes.

5. Castle

On the same side of the coin, it’s another procedural with a twist. Castle is a successful mystery novelist who helps solve crime. Nathan Fillion for those fans of The Rookie and there's a lot powerful female characters in it.

6. Murder, She Wrote

MSW walked so that Castle could run. This is an oldie but a good. Angela Lansbury is a mystery writer who solves crime. It’s super cool knowing that she insisted on hiring a lot of older guest stars so that they could continue to be in the union and get their benefits. Also omg the 80s/90s wardrobe. There's also a couple of episodes with other detectives and crime solvers when Angela started to get tired carrying the weight of quality television on her shoulders.

7. Drop Dead Diva

THIS is such a good law procedural. It has the added bonus as having the same casting director as 911 so you’ll see a lot of familiar faces. But Deb is a model who died and got reincarnated in the body of a plus size lawyer named Jane and it’s the most wonderful little nugget that just existed in its own space. It was SO ahead of it's time on certain issues and it deals with a variety of topics such as body shaming, slut shaming, mental health, etc in such a kind and compassionate and positive way.

**Gives me late summer 'I haven't moved from the couch and omg it's season three' vibes

8. Scorpion

A team of geniuses (with neurodivergent representation in action genre scenarios) who help solve crime and crisis situations for homeland security. Lots of found family feelings! SO MANY! Big time character driven show.

9. White Collar

A white collar criminal agrees to help solve crime with the FBI agent who arrested him. Neal is so whumpable and it's one of the few times I've seen a fandom really embrace the idea of a poly relationship in fanon? Idk I wasn't really in it but the fics I saw all seemed to agree that no one would complain if Peter, Neal, and Elizabeth all lived happily ever after with their golden retriever. NOW, I will say this is a Jeff Eastin show and he has a tendency to take the amazing female characters in the show, throw them in a blender, and then bring them back as Frankenstein's monster bride and act like he didn't just ruin their character and it drives me fucking insane. BUT those first couple of seasons are fantastic.

recently I read Jane Wilson Joyce’s translation of Statius’ Thebaid and I’m just so (screams for ten years) about all of it. so. Apmhiaraus and Apollo.

this isn’t how the actual scene itself goes, but more of an exploration of. you know. themes. or more accurately, the culmination of a bunch of thoughts/feelings I had while I was reading it. congrats, you’re favored by the gods! an esteemed seer from a family of seers. no one will heed your warnings because the forces at play eclipse mortal lives. what’s a human being to a plague? what’s a human being to a god that behaves the way that it does. you know you’ve been betrayed. violence devours violence devours violence. a cursed house brought all of you onto the stage against your will because it’s a plague, it’s war, it’s an infection, and you cannot exit the scene because the infection will take everyone, the events that set this in motion happened both now, somewhere else, and long before you had a say in any of it. you don’t want to die, but you’re favored by the gods! so you will be spared/denied a natural death to preserve your honor (there’s a moratorium on burials, so even if you died like the rest, it would still be wrong), and the site where you fell into the underworld will become sacred ground. you never wanted to be here in the first place.

Having just come back from seeing Thor: Love and Thunder for the second time (once in IMAX and once at my local independent cinema) I’m now ready to mercilessly deconstruct the top five dumbest criticisms of it that I’ve seen floating around so far...

1. It’s too short - Being the first Marvel film I’ve seen in ages to be under 2 hours, I can’t believe the amount of people citing this as a reason they didn’t like it. Not everyone wants to spend hour after hour fossilizing through fight-scenes which could have been significantly shorter and still good. Keeping the film to a reasonable length meant I didn’t have to hire a dog-sitter/be racked with guilt about leaving my 20-month-old samoyed by herself all evening.

2. There are too many jokes - Before I’d even seen it, I saw someone claiming it was like 80% jokes and only 20% plot and my response was “So?” I can now confirm it’s more of a 50/50 split at least, and it’s actually, genuinely funny. The entire cinema was in stitches both times for at least half the film. I’m so sorry if you watched the Nolan Batman films when you were like twelve and decided all superhero films had to be dark and edgy, but some of us would take joyful himbo Thor over intense brooding Thor any day of the week.

3. The scene with Heimdall’s kid was somehow transphobic - This is by far the dumbest one, because there is nothing about it which suggests it’s a dig at self-IDing trans kids. Heimdall’s son decides he wants a more earth-sounding name, so he wants to be called Axel. Thor is quite understandably miffed and wants to keep calling his dead friend’s kid the name his father gave him to honor his memory, but eventually relents. There is no evidence what-so-ever that Axel was afab, or that it’s a gender thing, it’s a freakin’ Guns n’ Roses reference, you morons.

4. Ragnarok was better and/or Taika was somehow the wrong choice of director - Actually, this is the dumbest one, because it seems to be echoed consistently by people who A) Didn’t like Ragnarok either B) Haven’t actually seen it C) Have never watched a Taika Waititi film that wasn’t in the marvel canon or D) All of the above. You’re entitled to your opinion, but if it’s based on any of the premises above, you’re wrong, and I’d like to counter it by saying I don’t ever want to watch another Thor film that wasn’t directed by Taika Waititi. Though I really hope Loki is in the next one.

5. Some nonsense about Jane Foster’s character arc, idk - I‘ve seen people claiming Natalie Portman must have been disappointed with her role, because, of course, I’m sure she preferred it when she was purely there as a love-interest or spent half the film in a frickin’ coma. I’ve seen people claim she didn’t look sick enough (a criticism that was never made of Peter Quill’s mother in the first GotG film, despite her being literally on death’s door) and while it’s a valid point, Hollywood films rarely allow women to look anything below fully made up and gorgeous with a few dark circles under the eyes, so what were you expecting? Weird hill to die on I guess.

He would definitely drool or have some problem speaking due to his multiple tongues. However, during his 'spring fever' as we'll call it, he grows, and his tongues fit normally into his mouth. During the rest of the year, though, they're more of an inconvenience than anything. He might have pockets in his mouth where they rest, but still somewhat have a mind of their own. Also, he has a harsh tongue if he really were to say what he thinks. If he really wanted to, he could be harsh; he could make you cry, even. He bottles up his anger and suppresses his rage until his ruts, then he lets them out however he chooses.

Laughing Jack-

He has bowls and drawers of poisonous candy. Like, do not take candy from him, no matter what charm he uses, or what charm he even has, should I say. He would offer it to you once you meet, sweet talking his way into your naive heart, and trying to poison you. Luckily, EJ has his way with making sure LJ's victims, of which there are lots of, don't die. Or, at least making them last as much they can. He often targets the younger members who work under Slender but isn't opposed to targeting some of the older ones, so long as they haven't heard of his tricks.

Jeff t.K-

He doesn't use deodorant or cologne, and only showers after extremely bloody missions; especially if he likes their house. Often, he'll steal things from his victim's homes and give them to people he likes (BEN, E.J, Toby). Most of the things he steals consist of clothes, drinks, hygiene products (such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, and perfume/cologne), and random trinkets. Often, he gives the clothes to Toby, and the hygiene products to E.J and BEN. The trinkets are distributed between BEN and Toby. He's smelly, okay? Stinky. Musty. Mentally ill eighteen-year-old homicidal maniac. And we love him, isn't that right?

'Ticci' Toby-

He drools, mainly due to bad muscle control and his gash. Gets super jittery around certain people, mainly woman. He gets nervous around females, considering that he has never really experienced love from a anyone, let alone a female. So, when he gets the chance to be a round Jane or Natalie or even Nina, he gets nervous and doesn't really know what to say or do. He cries a lot and often hyperventilates, especially when he thinks about Lyra, but that's only when he's alone. When he gets the chance, he visits her grave, leaving flowers and telling her about his life and what he's been up to. He's asked, countless times, if Slender could resurrect her, or bring her back in any way. Spirit form, even. Slender says he won't.

BEN Drowned-

His room is a pig sty. There are clothes everywhere and it has a kind of smell. The smell isn't necessarily bad, but it smells more like him than anything else. Kind of smells like weed and body odor, but not intolerable. He keeps Funko-Pops and has a mini fridge filled with energy drinks, G-fuel, and Powerade. That's all he drinks. He doesn't drink water. Why would he? It's not like he need to. Although, it's not like he needs food or drinks, either. Very sarcastic and not attentive.

Helen Otis/Bloody Painter-

He has multiple rooms that only he is allowed in. His art studio is the only one you or anyone else is allowed in, and even then, you still have to have permission to be there, along with him accompanying you. You aren't allowed to touch his art supplies nor his art. You are allowed with permission to his studio, but only when you are used as a muse, and solely for that reason. When you are his muse, you cannot speak, whine, or object. He claims you should be honored that he's chosen you, that you are his object of desire, and painting you is a treat to him. He says you are 'akin to an angel' and that perfection has made you its vessel. God complex.

Timothy Wright/Masky-

He smells like sweat constantly. He smells like sweat or cheap cologne and doesn't give two fucks. He smokes at least a pack and a half of cigarettes a day and Brian tries to get him to get down to one or half a pack. Of course, he's tried, but it never seems to stick. It's just a stress thing, he says. Once, he tried to go cold turkey, but ended up breaking two of Toby's fingers. He did not apologize. He has a rusty ass blue truck he shares with Brian, and it smells like cigarettes and beer. Scars are all over his body, and he hates them. Is very good at roller-skating (I hope you've seen the video of him skating; it's amazing). Used to roller-skate but stopped after he nearly rolled his ankles. Brian was recording and still has the video. Shows the video on his birthday.

Brian Thomas/Hoodie-

He is a master shit-talker. Gossiping is his first language; he can and will do it anyone with no shame and has no issue saying it to their face. If you need someone confronted, then he'll do it for you in case you don't want to. He isn't judgy unless he has a reason to dislike you. Knows another language, probably Russian or Romanian, and will speak that language when he's talking to himself, which he does often. He knows how to take care of almost any animal and will do so. Rants and talks about everyone with Tim. Tim is very tired. He literally is attached to Tim at the hip; he is always with him. Tim's getting food? Brian's coming. Tim's coming to the party? Better believe Brian is there. He side-eyes the hell out of people underneath his mask; without his mask, too, honestly. Has no shame. Will be loud and obnoxious wherever he pleases. Makes a mess when he cooks and doesn't clean it up. 'I do the cooking, you do the cleaning', he says.

everymanHYBRID-

Habit-

Absolutely drools. This motherfucker has the best and worst hygiene out there. Smells horrible but his teeth are perfect. He doesn't shower. Has a hoard of Reese's in his room at all times and doesn't see it fit for anyone to know about it other than him. Hits people with his little purple and orange claw thing. Like Brian, no shame. Loud, irritating, and condescending. The perfect way to describe him. (This isn't even a hc, it's just in the show), but he constantly asks how you're feeling, but just brushes it off and says it's because of some miniscule thing you did. Picks out all your flaws but won't make a move to help you. Your hair is messy? You're ugly, but he won't tell you what's wrong with it. Something in your tooth? He'll tell you to look in the mirror until you notice. His ego is way too inflated for him to help something so fragile and pathetic; so pathetic, even, that it doesn't know its tiniest of flaws like he does. God complex.

2023 Fic In Review

3. What's something you learned about yourself as a writer?

That I'm not as bad at this as I thought. For a really long time. For so long I had convinced myself I couldn't do this by myself, that I was doomed to forever be a beta/editor and support other people in their writing because I couldn't finish something on my own that was the level of... compelling? epic-ness? story-ness? that I wanted to be. And here I am, going into 2024, writing the fic teenage me always wanted to write.

4. What piece of media inspired you the most?

I've been learning so much about what pieces of media have been so formative to me, and I keep coming back to Jane Eyre (1997) being just imprinted on my psyche next to the Canon fairy tales of Snow White, and Ever After. (as well as many others)

7. What character(s) captured your heart?

I would die for Floris Baratheon and her quest to show up her father that she can fell the great stag and wear it's antlers.

9. What fic meant the most to you to write?

I mean I keep beating a dead horse here, but Maiden has been such a game changer for me. It truly is just... so much of what I've ever wanted. Honorable mention goes to Boy With a Broken Soul (Heart With a Gaping Hole) that I'm also deeply fucking satisfied with and just... so surprised with how damn long that fic got. I want to do more with it in the future. Not sure what I'll do with it though.

2. How many fics did you work on this year? (They don’t have to be finished or published!) Oh man...I have notes and little bits of two paragraphs here, a page or five there, but most of those will never go anywhere and I'm sure I've forgotten most of those ideas already but for knowing that they're in the depths of my Google Drive.

I published 10 (which is way more than usual for me!) and I've worked on/started four that I feel committed to finishing and posting eventually, as well as one more that I'll either write in the next week or watch it disappear into the ether (pretty sure there's not gonna be an in-between option for this one). This has been a year of hyperfixation whiplash, which, combined with ADHD, has had me spiraling all over the place with ideas and then promptly getting distracted and losing the momentum.

8. Did you write for a new fandom or ship this year? You know, I didn't—this was actually the year of me returning to some very, very old roots! I've written and posted my first 24 fic since, Christ, idk...2006? And then my first BSG fic since 2011, my first Doctor Who fic since 2012, and my first Star Trek fic since 2013. I wasn't expecting this but it's been pretty wild and fun! The TNG cast reuniting on Picard and then having David and Catherine back as the Doctor and Donna on Doctor Who were extremely inspiring external factors, but BSG and 24 were basically whims. I signed up for a BSG exchange in honor of the 20 year anniversary because I thought it would be fun to dip my toes back in that pond and then absolutely panicked when I realized I had to actually write BSG fic in the year of 2023, and then I started the 24 fic during a rewatch awhile back and @starg8rocks reminded me of it a few months ago and inspired me to finish it.

So, in short: no new fandoms, but lots of old ones!

10. What fic made you feel the happiest to work on? I mean, the blood sacrifice (aka the Succession yacht vs. orca crack fic) was pretty entertaining to me personally. I'm also just having so many feelings about Doctor Who deciding that the 2023 message is "rest, recover, and reconnect with all of your friends". So, while it was quite bittersweet and partly the result of me actively rejecting the premise that Sarah Jane Smith is dead in-universe, it was mostly just lovely and cathartic to write what falls away is always and offer two characters I adore a soft, quiet moment of care and connection.

15. Rec a fic you wrote or posted in 2023. The two fics that I agonized over most this year were let your faith die, bring your wonder (BSG, Laura Roslin gen) and we even flew a little (Succession, post-s3 but pre-s4 Roman/Gerri). Between one being in an older fandom and being gen vs. shippy and the other being posted just before season four of Succession started and catapulted the entire fandom, me included, into a new era of fic, I'm not shocked that neither of them got as much love (comparatively) to others I posted this year, but I like them. They're both fics I'm a bit self-conscious about and felt unhappy with when I posted with but I think that's largely because they took so long and stressed me out more than anything else I wrote this year—I liked them more upon revisiting.

Insulting her, as well as her family, all as some sort of proof that his love was strong? Enough to overcome such reservations, the barricade of propriety which he had defended for so long. She had not been enough, not even close, and now she was to believe his affections had changed?

And worse, that Eris would accost her in private, putting her name at risk for the sake of his…feelings. Never had Nesta wanted to strike a man so much.

“While I appreciate the struggle you have been through,” Nesta finally managed, fighting against the roaring in her head. Oh how she wished to rage and rage, to tear him down as he had so viciously done at every opportunity. To strike while he was so obviously weak. “I must decline. Most ardently.”

OH MAN. Top 5 EVER??? Ugh, this is tough... most of the stuff I've watched in the past 5-10 years has been all marvel movies or disney, so this might be a bit biased. Overall I'm a big fan of fantasy/sci-fi/animation and don't tend to venture outside of those genres much.

Loki (an obvious choice) - Dark World Loki was the best Loki, and I'll die on this hill.

The Goblin King from The Labyrinth - ohhh man, little me had a BIG crush on him.

Belle from Beauty and the Beast

Jane from Disney's Tarzan (she is literally my spirit character, I feel like I'm a mix between her and Belle so I identify with both very much they are very personal to me).

Truman from the Truman Show - I grew up on Jim Carrey movies, and this one has a special place in my heart. He's just such a positive yet strong character throughout his entire ordeal and I love that.

Honorable mention: Darth Vader - not because he's necessarily a good or very fleshed out character, but he's just incredibly iconic...? This was a fun one to answer, because I kept thinking of really great movies, but the characters themselves don't necessarily count as the best for me. So it was a good lil' mental exercise.
