crying your eyes out over the way you were just treated by your father when he lashed out at the thought of one william bonney. Your father, who deeply hates Billy, but is unaware of your love for the boy and his love for you. His words about Billy wrench at your heart and when you swallow down your courage and voice your opinions in favor of the infamous outlaw, your father berated you harder than he has before. His words were venom and you’ve got a thick skin but his words about how he’s gonna kill Billy, especially and violently more if he saw the outlaw around you, made your heart shatter.
Billy’s finding you in no time soon after it.
Almost like he knew something was going on.
“Hey pretty, ‘re you ready for….,” and he trails off once he gets a clearer look at your face, tears still falling from your eyes, your nose sniffly.
His lips move into a frown and he rushes over, grabbing your face in his hands. Billy’s a little too rough with it but you don’t mind, you actually needed to feel him and his warm, big palms covering your cheeks. “What happened? Did someone hurt you?”
It’s hard to respond at first since your crying is in full effect. Billy’s brow is furrowed and his jaw clenches. Thoughts race into his mind about the worst possible things that could’ve happened to make his pretty girl cry this much.
“Tell me,” his voice low and firmer than it was before, but his eyes seem to soften when you sniffle.
“N-no, not hurt. My father.” and that’s all you’d have to say for billy to know what you’re getting at. He loosens his hold on your face, rubbing his thumb to catch the tears as they fall slower.
“Oh, honey…listen ‘m gonna figure it out, okay? Even if that means stealin’ you away.”
You let out a breath at that as you try to calm your breathing. “He said he’s gonna kill you,” you whisper and Billy shakes his head almost immediately.
“He ain’t gonna do that. I won’t let him.” You roll your eyes at his words and Billy pats your cheek gently.
“Honey, ‘m serious. I won’t let him,” Billy says, leaning his forehead to yours as he softens his tone, “not lettin’ your father ruin us. I can’t…I can’t,” his voice breaks and you see his nose twitch.
Before you can respond, Billy is pulling you into his arms, embracing you tight. You return it, holding onto him like someone was about to drag him away. Billy presses his nose to your hair, your scent filling him even more than it did before as he kisses your head. “Can’t let you go,” he mumbles, his own eyes watering as he thinks about your father. Thinks about you and how much the world must hate him as hurdles keep being thrown at him.
He even says it to you in that moment, “the world hates me,” and he sniffs, making you pull back just in time to see his tears.
You can’t find the right words, but all you can think to do is press your lips to his, the salty taste of both of your tears lingering on your lips. When you pull away, your lips are still brushing his, his hands finding yours. “I love you, Billy. Even if the world hates you, hates me…I love you.”
He closes his eyes, taking your words. He tilts his head back, looking up at the night sky, scattered stars twinkling above. He makes a silent wish, a promise that he keeps to himself then looks back to you. Billy breathes in and out deeply, a stray tear falling down his cheek. He presses his lips to yours. His lips are chapped and bitten from his own teeth, a nervous habit you’d always remind him of, but he never stopped it. He kisses as though he might break you and while you both yearn for something harder, something more passionate, the gentleness seizes both of you up into platter of love. Billy’s pulling away from you only slightly to gaze into your eyes as he speaks in his entrancing drawl, “and I love you, pretty. More than anyone knows.”
let’s chat about billy, here :)

I've been thinking about how I could contribute to the ACD/Granada Sherlock Holmes fandom for a while, seeing as I'm neither an artist, a writer, or anything actually useful lol. But then I realized something I myself always treasure are curated fic recs, which I could actually do! I've read probably like 25% of all the h/w ACD and Granada fics on ao3, so I compiled a short list for anyone who is just starting out with the fandom. Without further ado, may I present
Eden’s Top Picks for Beginning ACD/Granada Fics:
(edit: i made a second list here!!)
The Adventure of the Doctor's Heart by mistyzeo 12k | Rated E Summary: Holmes has observed much of Watson's habits and tastes over time, which is why it surprises him when his friend objects strangely to a folk song sung at the conclusion of a case. Disturbed by the Doctor's unexpected display of emotion, Holmes becomes determined to lift his spirits by any means necessary, with mixed results. Notes: obviously if you're going to read canonverse h/w, you are going to read mistyzeo. this one is just so good and angsty and features music (!!). it's got some steaminess but it also has wooing. basically it has everything you ever need. this is my odyssey, my iliad, my hamlet, etc.
Cameo by what_alchemy 8k | Rated M | For Archive Users Only Summary: Holmes and Watson become embroiled in a case Scotland Yard refuses to acknowledge. A soulmate AU. Notes: i honestly skipped over this fic for a while, since i'm not the biggest fan of soulmate aus. do not make the same mistake i did, because this shit HITS. this fic has hit after hit: soulmate-mark based case for our main duo, angst, hiatus feels, MORE ANGST, and ofc a happy ending. ugh. read this fic if you enjoy being happy.
A Tide That Does Not Turn by tweedisgood 3k | Rated T Summary: Holmes is a very bad patient with a devoted doctor who adores him. Watson wishes it was safe to speak up, but his friend is a tide that does not turn. Notes: do NOT read this if you don't like angst... ok now i'm sensing a pattern. anyways this is the first hurt/no comfort fic i read for this tag and i literally have cried more than enough tears over it. poor, poor watson :( iconic author though, read everything they write!
The Adventure of the Glad Outlaw by radondoran 7k | Rated T Summary: While Sherlock Holmes solves the mystery of a student's disappearance, Dr. Watson is more puzzled by the changing dynamic between his flatmate and himself. Notes: cute pastiche! a nice little mystery and a nice little get-together. ahhhhhh.... this fic is like cotton candy to me, so sweet and fluffy. defo recommend
Hands by MinorObsessions (draculard) 1.4k | Rated T Summary: Naturally, there are some things Watson thinks about Holmes that don't make it into the books. Notes: i'm also in the star trek fandom, so if you know anything about that then you know that hands are kind of A Thing in both circles and ergo i now Have A Thing about hands. so this is a nice little ode to holmes' hands, featuring some doctoring by watson AND a nice reverse appraisal at the end. it's so sweet :)
Conductor of Light by ColebaltBlue  1.4k | Rated T Summary: A Victorian stiff upper lip won't prevent you from falling in love, but it might prevent you from realizing it. Notes: they finally get their shit together! honestly i would recommend this fic to anyone just starting out with h/w fics in any medium. the characterization and dialogue is A1, and their argument is really realistic to me, idk. also features the iconic HOUN quote for its title so props to that!
A (Mis)fortunate Man by sans_patronymic 1.5k | Rated T Summary: December, 1880. Watson writes a note which may be his last. December, 1899. Watson writes back. Notes: READ THE TAGS BEFORE READING. this was a gut-wrenching read but god i cried at the end for watson. don't worry, this one has a happy ending. ugh now i wish there was a second chapter where watson lets holmes read the letters. to sum up: oof, my heart
The Second Smartest Man in London by FairSinner 73k | Rated E Summary: Dr John Watson returns from Afghanistan to Victorian London, wounded, traumatised and alone. When he meets Sherlock Holmes, his life begins to seem worth living again. But Holmes is a man who despises sentiment and Watson cannot seem to expunge it from his heart. Notes: congrats, you've made it to the end!! so now i must confess that it's been a loooong time since i've read this fic, but the private note i left on my bookmark was just "holy shit", so i'm sure it's a banger. i'm also sure it has angst because i love angst and i love bookmarking angst so i can read it again and again and suffer infinitely. enjoy :)
anyways, now that i've put these all here i realized how much i enjoy angst and hurt/no comfort fics. if any of you guys have a favorite fic you want to link or want to plug your own writing, feel free to!

The Outlaw | Boothill (Angst)
⋇⋆✦⋆⋇ Synopsis: A forbidden love between an outlaw and penacony's star.
⋇⋆✦⋆⋇Tags: Boothill, Outlaw, Forbidden Love, No Happy Endings!
⋇⋆✦⋆⋇Note: This is based off of @/bladesdiary's Boothill Bot on Character Ai. Check out their bots, they're really well made!!
P.S This is pretty much a self-indulgent fic cause I cried buckets doing a roleplay with this bot.
Tumblr media
Being a member of an elite family in penacony is everyone's dream, being the center of it all, riches on all riches. You thought life couldn't even be more perfect, until you met him...
Boothill, an outlaw. A man that was both feared and wanted by all. It was a night of you just escaping this blasted reality, following where your feet led you, until you stumbled upon him on an abandoned building.
Since then, it has been a routine...Meeting up, chatting, it went on for 5 months up until...
The both of you fell inlove. It was so surreal, for once you felt happy. That building becoming a spot full of memories, escapades of forbidden love between an outlaw and penacony's star, you.
"You know, Darlin'...for a pretty princess you sure do have a spark in you" Boothill let out as he removed his hat and sat beside you by the edge of the building. You turned and faced him with a smug grin as you scooted towards him, placing your head on his shoulders as you sighed.
"But you love me anyways" You smugly replied to which Boothill chuckled and lightly patted your hand in comfort.
"Well, of course I do" He replied, his tone taking on a flirtacious edge to it. "That wild streak is exactly why I love you."
You let out a chuckle, silence befalling between you and him as the both of you stared at the sky. Stars twinkling oh so prettily as Boothill would fiddle with your hand, seeking the warmth of it on his. As the moon shone down between you, a sudden thought flooded your mind.
"Hey Boothill..." You softly called out to him.
"Yes, Darlin'?" He asked as he turned his head to face you, the sight of you taking boothill's breath away as he gave you a fond smile. You looked at Boothill, gaze studying his features as you then cupped his cheeks. He hummed as he felt your skin on his.
"I was just wondering...What if my family found out about this, what would you do?" You let out.
As you posed the question about your family, his smile faltered as he looked at you with his brows furrowed. He knew the answer, he knew the consequences but it was all to scary for him to come and talk about it.
"I..." He started, voice trailing off. "I...Don't want to think about it." Your eyes slightly widened as he let go of your hand and answered you. You sat there, beside him before letting go of his face and looking away from him. Boothill looked at you with worry as you let go of him, he saw the distasteful expression on your face but he decided not to comment on it just yet.
"I want to go home..." You let out as you stood up, grabbing the cloak you use to hide your identity as you wore it again. Boothill followed behind you as he grabbed you by your arm.
"Nami..." Boothill let out as he looked at you, unsure of how to start and end this conversation. You looked at him with a blank expression.
"You know...I expected a different answer from you when I asked..." You let out with a tinge of coldness and dissapointment in your tone, Boothill's hand slid from your arm to your hand as he raised it to his lips, kissing it. Hoping it would appease you.
"Y/N, it's just too complicated. I don't want to think about it, am--" Before Boothill could even finish his sentence, you cut him off by pulling your hand away from his grip.
"If you don't want to talk about it now, then when are we planning on talking about it?" You let out.
"Am telling you, Darlin'...It's not that easy. For now, I want things to stay the same..."
"The same? Boothill, am getting sick and tired of this set up. I want to atleast take you out, I want to introduce you to my family, I want to be with you...!" You let out, tone slightly rising due to your built up frustration.
"Am just...Am scared" Boothill let out a mutter as he stood in front of you, lowering his head to avoid your gaze. You stared at him in confusion and dissapointment.
"Am gonna ask you again, Boothill. If the time were to come and my family found out, they told you to leave me and never show your face...what would you do..." You asked once more, tears threatening to leave your eyes as you let out baited breaths to hold it in.
"I..." He let out, pausing.
"Do you want me to be honest with you?..." He asked as he finally looked back up and met your gaze.
"Just spit it out" You retorted.
You could see how Boothill's hand formed into a fist as he looked at you, the loud whistling of the wind, started to become deafening as you waited for his answer. Boothill then took a deep breath before he responded.
"If they found out about us, I would leave." He let out, his reply piercing you straight in the heart. You stood there, dumbfounded
Taken aback, tears started streaming down your eyes as you looked at him with a blank expression. You were speechless and everything around you turned into an annoying buzz. For the first time, he saw how something affected you deeply. The guilt settling as it started to weigh in on him.
"I'm sorry..." Boothill let out. Snapping out of your trance you looked at him as you continued to wipe your tears away, hoping the tears would stop but no...It continued to flood out, with each sob you felt your chest tightening, as it started to get harder to breath.
"Fuck.." you let out in frustration as you continued to cry, Boothill looked at you with worry as he then reached out to hold you. You looked at him as you slapped his hand away.
"Don't fucking touch me...!" YOu yelled through gritted teeth, Boothill stared at you before he kept his head low.
"If I knew this would've happened, I wouldn't have fallen for your sweet promises and words!" You yelled again as you harshly pulled on the necklace you were wearing. A jaded necklace that he gave you. Looking at him, you threw it on the ground.
"Nami, am sorry but it's just..."
"Shut up!" You let out.
"Just...Shut up, I've heard enough and am done" You let out as you turned around and walked away. Boothill stared at your back, wanting to call for your name but it was inevitable. He sighed to himself as he then picked up the jaded necklace, and moving to sit down on the edge of the building.
Staring at the necklace, he gave it a small kiss before throwing it off of the building. His gaze staring ahead at the night sky, the once warm place, turned called and forgotten as Boothill got up and left. The wind howled as the lovestory between an outlaw and penacony's star tragically ended...
----
Grabbing the bottled beer, he chugged it down as he then looked up at the bartender who was staring at him with raised brows.
"What? Was it a bad story?" Boothill asked as he chugged down the beer.
"It was...something..." The bartender let out as he walked away and started serving the other customer's. Boothill sat on his seat and sighed to himself before his head looking up at the television hanging up by the bar.
"Just in! Penacony's Star, Y/N L/N has finally announced her wedding with the head of the Oak Family!--" The news anchor let up, Boothill chuckled to himself as he finished the beer he was drinking before placing a few credits under the empty bottle and leaving. It was indeed a bitter and painful end...
"Goodbye, Penacony" Boothill let out as he tipped his hat and walked away, continuing his journey with your name still looming at the back of his mind and heart. Hoping that he would see you again...

helloo since we're on the topic: top historical fiction (or adjacent) ? can be any time period I just really love your taste in shows/games/etc and am always on the lookout for history inspired media !
thank you!!! im rly glad im like. inspiring other ppl to engage w things im insane abt hudofajsdfdassfsad. anyways. i will probably expand that list bc i literally forgot every single thing i ever read. also i havent watched that many movies so far
ancient times: i havent really watched a lot of movies/series set in ancient times so far :(
rome HBO (2005-2007) (tv series) - OF COURSE. i personally think its one of the best series ever made. they combine political, miliatry history with the lives of every day people in an incredible way. they never let you once engage with the series through modern lenses. according to my teacher (a historian, archeologist & self described 'romaphile') its incredibly historically accurate, mostly the clothing, set designs, characterization, military practices, etc. except for the things they straight up made up, of course.
i really enjoyed gladiator (2000), i think its a masterpiece.
prince of egypt (1998) i guess?
all the asterix movies of course, all the animated ones and most of the live actions. but i wouldnt really call it historical fiction
ok i havent actually finished watching it for now but sebastiane (1976) - an erotic, x rated, gay interpretation of the martyrdom of st sebastian. its in latin also.
wait i cant believe i forgor about assassin's creed odyssey - so far the only one ive played. its so fun and incredibly immersive visually. especially pour moi who cries into the pillow about how ill never experience the ancient world. also you can b a faggot which is always fun. i have things to say about their portrayal of same-sex sexuality and slavery in classical greece but i get why they did that considering its supposed to like. appeal to a lot of people, and a more "historically accurate" portrayal (for example of pederasty or how common slavery was etc.) would b v difficult for a lot of their target audience. alas.
medieval and early modern era:
the name of the rose (1986) - my medieval history teacher literally showed us bits of this movie to teach us about monasteries and monks fhdosiasdjasd.
the borgias (2011-2013) - incredibly messy, lots of political intrigue, and so so fun to watch. about the history of the borgia family. filled to the brim with drama.
the three musketeers (1993) - my favorite adaptation, also coincidentally the one i grew up on. casting tim curry as richelieu was genius. he slays so hard.
i also like bbc's the musketeers (2014-2016) - a neat little series. very fun and entertaining to watch.
outlaw king (2018) - like i dont think most ppl heard of this movie. its about robert the bruce's fight to reclaim the throne of scotland. starring chris pine
vikings (2013-2020) - its fun. i havent watched the entire series tho. dont expect anything resembling historical accuracy
the northman (2022) - you will see something resembling historical accuracy
mihai viteazul (michael the brave) (1971) - a fun movie. very much romanian propaganda tho.
1670 (2023-) - such a fun series!!! incredible cast, shows respect to the actual history and the lives of historical people. really cute and funny.
caravaggio (1986) - a biopic about caravaggio.
wait i also forgor about pentiment - an intriguing, immersive, and incredibly beautiful video game! it has a lot of 'the name of the rose' vibes, with it being a medieval murder mystery taking place in a monastery. its incredibly touching and made me cry, and in the last few years i very rarely cry. also im 99% sure its an indie game? go support the creators!
vaguely-medieval/early modern fantasy:
mirror mirror (2012) - a retelling of snow white. a very fun movie imo, with incredible costume design. julia roberts plays the evil queen and she SLAYS. armie hammer is unfortunately in that movie.
stardust (2007) - one of my fave movies growing up. more modern-inspired but still.
the green knight (2021) - controversial i know but i actually loved this movie! i liked it both as a standalone movie but moreso as a 21st century adaptation to sir gawain and the green knight.
galavant (2015-2016) - !!!!!!! one of the most series ever! they manage to tackle such difficult concepts and conversations with a hilarious wit. so fun to watch. i listen to a lot of the songs still, and rewatch every once in a while.
disenchantment (2018-2023) - very fun to watch, especially the first season.
i also really liked the novel uprooted by naomi novik. its a polish-inspired fantasy.
modern era:
killers of the flower moon (2023) - of course. a masterpiece
aferim! (2015) - a romanian movie set in 19th century wallachia, about two officers, a father and son, who were sent by a nobleman to retrieve an escaped enslaved romani man. a lot of the people in the comments were calling the movie humorous and funny, maybe im missing smth (as im watching with subtitles n dont understand the original language) but it was a very difficult watch for me??
the handmaiden (2016) - need i say more
black sails (2014-2017) - a prequel to the famous novel 'treasure island'. not an easy series to watch. incredibly good.
the favourite (2018) - need i say more pt 2
the rabbi's cat (le chat du rabbin) (2011) - animated movie set in early 20th century algeria. a rabbi's cat learns to talk overnight.
the nice guys (2016) - a fun murder mystery set in the 1970s
o brother, where art thou (2000) - a retelling of the odyssey set in the southern us in the 1930s
victor/victoria (1982) - set in early 20th century paris. julie andrews pretends to be a man and takes on a job as a drag queen. extremely fun, extremely gay movie.
lady chatterley's lover (2022) - very much porn for moms but it was a nice watch imo
amulet (2020) - set in like. idk. sometime in the 20th century. this is a horror movie, deals a lot with misogyny, sa, and so on. i really like it, personally. a lot of people, mostly weird men, dont tho.
the great (2020-2023) - i have mixed feelings about this show. on the one hand, its really fun to watch. on the other hand, its basically ofmd for girls who have public mental breakdowns whenever someone claims corsets were oppressive. and theyre so weird about russians, jesus christ.
disses:
domina (2021-) - i just couldnt get into it, esp since i tried right after finishing rome hbo. it was kind of silly, and not in a good way. takes itself wayyyy to seriously.
i didnt like spartacus (2010-2013) - the dialogue was almost grotesque and the editing, especially the transitions, straight up killed me
damsel (2024) - holy fuck what a trainwreck of a movie. absolute waste of angela basset and robin wright. the only good thing were the costumes.
lancelot du lac (1974) - i just didnt like it at all. couldnt get into it. i guess it was way too french and artsy fartsy for me. a movie that was trying to say both too little and too much at the same time.
i didnt rly like bram stoker's dracula (1992) - i mean. it was a fine movie. it was definitely not the godfather. the movie itself was meh. the visuals tho? absolutely stunning

i hate to say this, i truly do, but despite how much it devastated me, i'm glad arthur morgan died on that mountain.
i mean, for 1. it makes sense in the context of the videogame. arthur was never mentioned in rdr, he was created for rdr2 and had to die at the end of it because he simply didn't exist in rdr.
and 2. arthur morgan has never known peace in his whole life. his mother died when he was young, and his father is implied to be abusive, i mean, arthur is glad that his father is dead, he's only upset over the fact that it didn't happen sooner.
he grew up as an outlaw, he didn't have a choice, he was born into it and then his father died, and even though he was again implied to be abusive, he is really the only person arthur had with him, without him, he had no one in his life.
he was an orphan, living on the streets and he would have died much sooner, whether by hanging or by sickness, if it weren't for the fact that dutch and hosea brought him into the gang, but it wasn't any better.
being in the van der linde gang comes with a $5000 bounty, a kill count, violent tendencies, being the third in command for one of the most wanted gangs in america and an inevitable death, where he wouldn't be lucky enough to die of old age, but rather of a shooting, or a hanging.
being in the van der linde gang came with losing two mother-figures (annabelle and bessie), a broken engagement, where like the star-crossed lovers they are, they always seem to find one another (mary), and the tragic loss of his son's mother and his son (eliza and Isaac).
it comes with never knowing peace from the government, but being under constant threat of kidnapping and torture from rival gangs and then dying by their hand.
and if you think about the current story of red dead redemption 2, where arthur is sadly witness to his gang, his family falling apart at the seams, where people who he considers to be his younger brothers and sisters dying in his arms, where he cannot comfort them into death, it comes to losing his last mother-figure and his pa, not being able to soothe them, to help them, not being able to go to them lest he die, by the pinkertons, by the bullet of micah, or by the bullet of his father-figure.
a man who raised arthur, a man who arthur looked up to and loved and put all his loyalty into, put his life on the line for him, only for dutch to choose a man so vile, a man who actively goes against everything dutch pretends to stand for (or used to stand for, depending on your interpretation) over him, and for him to be willing to shoot and murder arthur.
i mean, can you imagine arthur living with all that? the survivors guilt? the constant thinking of, what went wrong? would i be able to change that? would my being there have made a difference at all? why am i alive when people who had so much to live for, so much to give to the world, like sean, like lenny, like kieran, like molly, like hosea, like susan, like jenny, mac and davey?
he would question his whole life, on what happened to dutch (like we do) thinking was dutch always like that? was there signs that he was blind to? things he didn't see? living with the betrayal of the fact that dutch would have killed him on that mountain, with little to no hesitation, that his whole life was a lie and he was risking his life for a man who likely didn't believe in the morals he preached.
i mean, we already know that arthur changed because of the death of his son's mother and his son, and that it hardened him, that it changed him, that maybe before those deaths he was a lot like sean that he was happy, that he did once think better of himself and didn't hate himself the way he clearly does right now.
if arthur lived, it wouldn't be a happy life, it's likely he'd be left with nothing but a husk of his former self, the guilt and the betrayal and the regret gnawing away at him for the rest of his life, it's likely that.. well, it's likely that he would have died long after, by his own bullet.

'snow & dirty rain' by richard siken is so aziracrow-coded (the good omens brain-rot is so strong and so crippling)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Close your eyes. A lover is standing too close to focus on. Leave me blurry and fall toward me with your entire body. Lie under the covers, pretending to sleep, while I'm in the other room. Imagine my legs crossed, my hair combed, the shine of my boots in the slatted light. I'm thinking My plant, his chair, the ashtray that we bought together. I'm thinking This is where we live. When we were little we made houses out of cardboard boxes. We can do anything. It's not because our hearts are large, they're not, it's what we struggle with. The attempt to say Come over. Bring your friends. It's a potluck, I'm making pork chops, I'm making those long noodles you love so much. My dragonfly, my black-eyed fire, the knives in the kitchen are singing for blood, but we are the crossroads, my little outlaw, and this is the map of my heart, the landscape after cruelty which is, of course, a garden, which is a tenderness, which is a room, a lover saying Hold me tight, it's getting cold.
We have not touched the stars, nor are we forgiven, which brings us back to the hero's shoulders and the gentleness that comes, not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it. The lawn drowned, the sky on fire, the gold light falling backward through the glass of every room. I'll give you my heart to make a place for it to happen, evidence of a love that transcends hunger. Is that too much to expect? That I would name the stars for you? That I would take you there? The splash of my tongue melting you like a sugar cube? We've read the back of the book, we know what's going to happen. The fields burned, the land destroyed, the lovers left broken in the brown dirt. And then it's gone.
Makes you sad. All your friends are gone. Goodbye Goodbye. No more tears. I would like to meet you all in Heaven. But there's a litany of dreams that happens somewhere in the middle. Moonlight spilling on the bathroom floor. A page of the book where we transcend the story of our lives, past the taco stands and record stores. Moonlight making crosses on your body, and me putting my mouth on every one. We have been very brave, we have wanted to know the worst, wanted the curtain to be lifted from our eyes. This dream going on with all of us in it. Penciling in the bighearted slob. Penciling in his outstretched arms. Our father who art in Heaven. Our father who art buried in the yard. Someone is digging your grave right now. Someone is drawing a bath to wash you clean, he said, so think of the wind, so happy, so warm. It's a fairy tale, the story underneath the story, sliding down the polished halls, lightning here and gone. We make these ridiculous idols so we can pray to what's behind them, but what happens after we get up the ladder? Do we simply stare at what's horrible and forgive it?
Here is the river, and here is the box, and here are the monsters we put in the box to test our strength against. Here is the cake, and here is the fork, and here's the desire to put it inside us, and then the question behind every question: What happens next? The way you slam your body into mine reminds me I'm alive, but monsters are always hungry, darling, and they're only a few steps behind you, finding the flaw, the poor weld, the place where we weren't stitched up quite right, the place they could almost slip right through if the skin wasn't trying to keep them out, to keep them here, on the other side of the theater where the curtain keeps rising. I crawled out the window and ran into the woods. I had to make up all the words myself. The way they taste, the way they sound in the air.
I passed through the narrow gate, stumbled in, stumbled around for a while, and stumbled back out. I made this place for you. A place for you to love me. If this isn't a kingdom then I don't know what is. So how would you catalog it? Dawn in the fields? Snow and dirty rain? Light brought in in buckets? I was trying to describe the kingdom, but the letters kept smudging as I wrote them: the hunter's heart, the hunter's mouth, the trees and the trees and the space between the trees, swimming in gold. The words frozen. The creatures frozen. The plum sauce leaking out of the bag. Explaining will get us nowhere. I was away, I don't know where, lying on the floor, pretending I was dead. I wanted to hurt you but the victory is that I could not stomach it. We have swallowed him up, they said. It's beautiful. It really is. I had a dream about you. We were in the gold room where everyone finally gets what they want. You said Tell me about your books, your visions made of flesh and light and I said This is the Moon. This is the Sun. Let me name the stars for you. Let me take you there. The splash of my tongue melting you like a sugar cube...
We were in the gold room where everyone finally gets what they want, so I said What do you want, sweetheart? and you said Kiss me. Here I am leaving you clues. I am singing now while Rome burns. We are all just trying to be holy. My applejack, my silent night, just mash your lips against me. We are all going forward. None of us are going back.

Headcanon...?
Spoilers for a fic I will write eventually?
Do not read if you do not like made-up, author-indulgent backstories for characters who exist in the GFFA. This one is almost hard to post because it's kind of personal. Like, a story so plot driven that I am nervous people will hate my interpretation and my ships. Oh well, I guess, it's happening.
Tumblr media
A discussion in the Duros hoes chat, and then between me and @allsystemsblue, got me thinking about what is Cad Bane's real name? It sure as hell ain't Cad Bane. A lot of the fandom seems to agree on that. "Cad" and "bane" are both words in the dictionary that can be defined.
Cad: a man who behaves dishonorably, especially toward a woman. / scoundrel / rogue / rascal.
Bane: a cause of great distress or annoyance. / scourge / ruin / death.
We shall come back to this.
I have a scene mapped out for Stars Above in which I want Cad to run into his sister. I have a plan for his backstory that does not include this particular fanfic, but another, a series I am working on that will be entitled "Annuals of an Outlaw," and is essentially a collection of works I have outlined that will contain my version of Cad Bane's "story" from his beginnings on Duro in the Descent Ghetto, to after the Clone Wars and beyond.
Yes, it will have smut. And angst. Lots and lots of angst. Many character will appear, including Jango, Hondo, Aurra, Bossk, Embo, Zam, Dengar, Todo 360, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and even Boba at some point. Oh, and let us not forget Shriv Suurgav. :)
Yes, Shriv.
You cannot stop me. Don't even try. This is my magnum opus, and by God it will make sense narratively. Just you wait. Or don't. I don't care. I am still going to write this thing if it's the last thing I ever do.
First of all, I enjoy playing around with Star Wars name generators. That is how I came up with the name of my OC, Zulara. I started sifting through them, piecing last names together with other first names, and voilà, a new name appeared to me that caught my attention.
Originally, I was looking for Durese words that maybe meant something in relation to his occupation or personality, but none of them called out. It appears others had that same idea in the past, so it makes sense to go with something new.
Anyway, my name for Cad Bane is Lumoon Troks.
Here are the outpouring of thoughts I had on the matter before I could stop myself. I came up with this over the last hour or two, and I am digging it so far. Who knows, maybe I will change my mind. It's helping me to fill in a lot of gaps, anyway, that I had in the plot, and I am happy about that.
So, I am giving Bane siblings. Two much older sisters, two brothers who are 1-2 years apart, and a younger sister who is four or five at the time Lumoon finally leaves home.
His siblings call him Lu, or Moon for short. When they want to be annoying, they call him Moody Moon, or "Lemon" because of his sour outlook ( lemons are "canon" in SW, I checked).
To sum things up briefly, Bane's mother was a kindhearted woman and his father was a gruff workaholic. They both were employed in the factories and rarely had time to spend with their family, but had too many mouths to feed.
Cad gets into trouble quite often. He runs wild in the streets from a young age. Maybe he hooks up with the wrong crowd. Nothing too menacing; some petty theft, vandalism, etc, etc.
His father's angry about it. He refuses to take on work in the factories with him. He wants more for himself. He's not about that grind day in, day out life. Things get so toxic between them that he leaves to make his own way, stops coming home, worries his mother sick, and his little sister to boot.
So much so, his little sister ( talking maybe preschool / kindergartener age ) decides she has to "bring Moon home" and takes it upon herself to find him. She loves her big brother and sorely misses him.
This does not end well. At all. The worst possible scenario unfolds. The first of many tragedies in Cad Bane's life. It deeply affects him. He tries to go to his mother; she isn't the same Duros any longer. She coldshoulders him, ignores him, and she suffers from a broken heart.
Cad blames himself. "She went out to find you and never came home." This time, he really does leave and never returns. I am sure there is a final fight between him and his father that maybe seals the deal. He takes up random jobs, anything that pays, from sex work, to being hired muscle, to thieving, to murder, you name it, as long as the pay is good and it keeps his mind off his own problems.
He learns skills along the way, and he also learns from his mistakes. Things start being a little too easy. He's tired of being bossed around. He wants to be his own boss. So, that's exactly what he becomes.
He decides to try his hand at bounty hunting. He begins to make a name for himself, except, he hasn't. He needs a new one, something intimidating, striking, and rememberable. Plus, he doesn't want his birthname floating around; that makes him vulnerable, as well as the rest of his surviving kin.
Bane's mother, in the early days of his youth, used to scold him for misbehaving. She called him the equivalent of a cad in Durese, and it translated that way from basic, something along the lines of "Lumoon! Quit being such a cad, you naughty boy!"
It means something to him. He feels it embodies what he has become. It is also a tribute to his mother as well as a punishment; something he has to live with and that he brought upon himself.
The next thing you know, one of his many enemies makes a snarky comment, saying to him, "you are the bane of my existence," or simply, "you are a bane!" From there, his new name takes shape in his mind. He thinks if you put two and two together, it sounds kind of nice. It sticks. He starts to introduce himself like that, when before he had only referred to himself as Cad.
Another misfortune befalls him, which I mentioned I wanted him to run into his sister. This would happen off-world somewhere, years later, and during the reign of the Galactic Empire. She would say something to the likes of: "Mom died. She never gave up on you. She waited for you to come home, everyday. I didn't have the heart to tell her I had seen your wanted posters."
It tears him apart for awhile. His second great tragedy. Never getting to reconcile with the Duros who raised him and whom he loved. He harbors this for the rest of his life.
Of course, running in the streets, he learns not to trust people. He's jaded. He gets fucked over a time or two, badly, and by people he thinks he can trust. He develops a shell; a way of looking at the world that allows him to keep his guard up for his own protection.
In that same vein, I believe Bane can love and that he can love hard given the right circumstances. One of the many reasons he's kept from saying it, is because every person he has ever cared about has either turned on him or dies. The galaxy is a harsh mistress. He's afraid of a repeat scenario; he doesn't let himself get close. He tells himself he's better off alone, doesn't need anybody; he prefers to run without a pack.
That is, until he meets Jango.
And, that, my friends, is a whole other story, but I want to add that Cad Bane has bad dreams. Nightmares, even. Visions. Terrible things happen, old memories replay, he is haunted by his past. The sister he couldn't save; the mother he thought had stopped loving him; the father he was never good enough to please.
Hondo compares himself to a sun, and Bane is the moon. This would fuck with him psychologically, and cause him to react unexpectantly should the nickname stick - one that is reminiscent of his childhood. It is Hondo Ohnaka in my story that saves Bane from himself after Fett meets his untimely end.
Jango, Hondo, and Shriv may call him moody from time-to-time, or grumpy, but that also does not sit well, either, considering his past.
Once Jango dies, and once he fails at training Boba, Cad is even more a wreck than before. In my story, he also does not get to reconcile with his old partner and mentor after their falling out. He drinks himself stupid in the presence of Boba to the point the boy gets fed-up and they have their duel.
Bane, in my mind, can't accept Boba as Fett's son; he is a clone; he could never accept the clone contract from the get go - it put a rift in their relationship. This adds more fuel to the "look out for yourself" fire that is his quote in the Book of Boba Fett.
Sorry this got so long-winded, but, I had to get that out as it came to me. Now, to actually write the story all these ideas are for!

!(A letter to my future self)
As 2023 nears its end, with just a month remaining, and just two days away from my birthday, this moment, the opener of the last month, brings with it a hangover from the year, a realisation that I am no longer the same person I once was.
This year, in particular, has been a been quite a ride for me. From changing my address to changing the whole trajectory of my life, it has experienced it all. Receiving my Spotify wrap-up for the year, I'm reminded of the magic of music – how it can evoke the deepest of emotions, reliving the highest highs and the lowest lows. These songs have become a soundtrack to a year of transformation, from a self-destructive lifestyle to one disciplined by necessity.
It's astonishing how much one can experience in a year. This year has made me realise the breadth of time – how in just twelve months, life can flip upside down, leaving you a stranger to the person you were at the year's start.
Is every year like this? Probably not!! Does it happen often? Nope!! So, what makes it special? The tapestry of memories, decisions, reactions, and everything in between.
I'm not here to tally my achievements or losses. In fact, writing this down is a first for me. But for once, let's not keep score, let's not try to get one better, try not to reach somewhere. Instead, let's embrace the moment and recognise ourselves. Find that inner calm that others can sense. Be unconventional – be a monk with a stylish haircut, be a priest in shorts and a T-shirt or a father in jeans and a hoodie. If it's hard to imagine, then be the one to break the mold. Be the outlaw, the outcast, the nerd who knows nothing of Star Wars or the MCU.
In life, we should allow ourselves the simple joys – laugh a little, cry a little, sleep a little, walk a little. When you find yourself at a crossroads, dare to take the road less traveled. Maybe you will find something interesting, some long lost memory, a forgotten friends, someone you were madly in love once, something you didn't even knew you had.
Be curious to explore beyond your comfort zone. Set sail on new adventures, for each journey is a quest to find the missing piece of your life's puzzle.
Life's meaning isn't something to be found but experienced. Embrace the chaos of possibilities, much like a chessboard at the start of a game. With every move, new worlds of possibility unfold. Chess, like life, is an intricate dance of choices and consequences, endless in its variations.
Never underestimate the importance of the seemingly small. You might have missed those particular opportunities that led you to become an Olympic shooter, or a traveller, or a vineyard owner, or a rock star, or a planet-saving physicist, or an IIT graduate, or the million other things, but you are still in some way all of those people.
As you age, you'll realise that much of what once seemed important fades into insignificance. Emptiness isn't a void; it's a canvas for existence. Use it to shape your life's meaning.
We are all just wandering through the tundra of our existence, assigning value to worthlessness, when all that we love and hate, all we believe in and fight for and kill for and die for is as meaningless as images projected onto a screen.
These thoughts might seem disjointed, but perhaps that's the essence of life – a puzzle we're all trying to solve. Our lives are a tapestry of reactions, decisions, and their consequences.
Life is a kaleidoscope – it's anything and everything you want it to be. A topsy-turvy ride, a roller-coaster ride, a ride full of useless decisions and nonsense reactions, a life full of regrets and mistakes, and it still can be a life worth living for.
And if you think you can ask me questions and get some sense out of all the things I have written so far, well, I will think about it tomorrow, for tomorrow is just another day.

Game asks: 5, 9, 14, 22 😁✨
Thank you, love!
5. Game(s) coming out that you’re looking forward to
First of all, Dragon's Dogma 2! It coming out in this year's March was such a delightful surprise. The original game from a decade or so ago was really interesting and in many ways innovative, though it has remained pretty obscure to larger audiences. Even I came across it pretty much by chance.
It's not that I mind the recent trend of tactical/isometric RPGs (though I've never been that big a fan of turn-based, as someone who grew up on the OG Infinity Engine games, RWP all the way), but an open-world action-adventure is still a welcome change (Starfield, bless its heart, doesn't count). I've also never been into the JRPG genre, but DD is an interesting case because while it's a Japanese production, it doesn't feel like a JRPG, aesthetically or otherwise.
Anyway, feast your eyes on the latest trailer!
youtube
There are others that I'm looking forward to as well, like Awoved, Broken Roads, Star Wars: Outlaws, and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 (though with the developmental weirdness and the complete overhaul of the entire concept of the game that followed, I'm more cautiously curious than excited now). But realistically, I only expect one or two of them to actually come out this year.
Oh, and there are some cool visual novels coming out that I'm looking forward to as well, like Made Marion (currently in Early Access with Robin's route already playable), Call Me Under (which I hope has avoided the issues the studio's last two games, Errant Kingdom in particular, had), Imperial Grace, Tenebrae, and When Stars Collide.
9. A game you played completely blind with no prior knowledge of and enjoyed/loved
Huh. It's pretty rare for me to go in completely blind, though I usually don't go out of my way to look things up either as the joy of discovery is a big thing for me. But... I guess I could say the first Dragon's Dogma? I did not have many expectations, and while it wasn't the most brilliant thing ever and had some frustrating mechanics, it was super enjoyable (until the endgame bits ugh, but that's a me issue I guess).
Oh, and Enderal, of course! It's safe to say I Had No Idea What I Was In For.
14. A song that’s sure to hit your nostalgia buttons
Hah, how nostalgic do we want to get? Though a song specifically narrows things down a little, hmm.
Honestly, the first one to start playing in my head was Malukah's gorgeous Beauty of Dawn for The Elder Scrolls Online, but my brain also protests because a ten-year-old game is apparently not old enough for it to count as nostalgic. 😂
Something really old, then? How's A Pirate I Was Meant To Be? 😎
22. A game ending that’s really stuck with you
Well. The thing is, I'm apparently chronically allergic to finishing games. It's not that I lose interest, exactly, I guess I just don't like things to end or something? So I'm basically what you might call the complete antithesis of a speedrunner, I have to do literally everything else first and I often find myself loading an older save if I feel like the main quest is proceeding too fast (depending a little on the type of game, of course). 😅
So this is a bit of a challenge for me. Also, endings are tough in any media from a writing standpoint, truly satisfying and impactful endings are difficult to pull off.
But... even though I haven't technically finished it, I think I have to say Enderal. I mean, there are several possible endings, but they're all emotionally impactful, make sense, and will haunt you for a long time afterwards (as does the entire game, really).
Talk to me about video games?

Any actor’s directorial debut is daunting. But for “Roswell, New Mexico” star Michael Trevino, things were significantly easier thanks to his leading lady, Jeanine Mason, who apparently was “saving” him on the daily.
In Monday night’s episode, directed by Trevino, we meet Outlaw Liz (Mason). She’s a parallel version of the Liz Ortecho we’ve come to know and love, who acts on her darker impulses. Thanks to the chemical compound she inhaled, Liz is trapped in her mindscape, battling for dominance. That mindscape, of course, is an old western town, in which Liz is the sheriff, haunted by Outlaw Liz.
Mason took on double duty for the week and according to Trevino, needed very little direction from him.
“I literally was just behind the monitor, because I know how talented she is,” Trevino recalled to TheWrap. “And then I see her play this completely different character, making complete opposite choices, and they’re believable, and she’s making it look easy. And I know it’s hard, but she’s making it look so easy. I was so, so thankful for — I remember everyday just being like, ‘thank you’ because she’s saving me!”
Of course, a little advice from a seasoned vet didn’t hurt either. Because for Trevino, this directorial debut has been a long time coming — he shadowed his old “Vampire Diaries” friend Julie Plec way back on the “Roswell, New Mexico” pilot. So he made sure to pick her brain on some key aspects. But more on that shortly.
For now, Trevino is just basking in the excitement of his episode finally being out in the world.
“It’s never easy. But when it’s all said and done and you get to that final day, it all comes together? There’s no better feeling,” he said.
You can check out TheWrap’s full conversation with Michael Trevino below.
Note: This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and length.
Michael, I always like to begin my interviews the big question. So, tell me what it’s like directing your character as a horse?
(laughs) You know, working with animals can prove to be difficult. But I will say, working with Kyle the horse, like myself, just the utmost professionalism on set, ever. Greatest horse ever. And the performances were all there. It was easy. Very easy.
More seriously though, this is your directing debut. This is huge for you. Is it something that has been in the works for a while, that you’ve wanted and you waited for?
It is something that I’ve been working so for a while. I have, since our pilot episode — I shadowed Julie Plec when she directed our pilot. And since the pilot episode, I communicated to the powers that be, and made it very clear that if this show were to go for a few seasons, I would like an opportunity to direct. And they said, “OK, we’ll see.” And I said, OK, well, I’m going to stick around video village, and I’m going to be around on days when I’m not working, filming. And I’m going to learn.
So I did that for the four seasons. But to prove that much more that I was that serious, I shot a short film after season three in Albuquerque with some of our crew that we use on “Roswell.” And I think after that, they saw how serious I was and they gave me an opportunity in season four here to finally get behind the camera. It is, you’re absolutely right, it is a big deal. I don’t take it lightly. I’m just so grateful and happy that it finally happened, that people are going to see this episode. And now hopefully, this leads to more opportunities from another TV show.
I really like your approach of, “I’m just going to be present. I’m just going to be next to you until you decide to give me a shot.” Because that’s how I approach things as well, and it’s good to know that it works.
Yeah, I’m telling you! It’s like, you don’t have to ask — show people, right? Actions speak louder than words. And so like, there were days where they’d just look around and be like, “Oh, he’s still here!” Even crew was like, “What are you doing?” I’m like “Shadowing,” and they’re like “Huh!” So it’s also that level of respect that you get. So when I finally got my shot, I truly believe it was earned. And I had the crew’s respect and support when you get up there.
Absolutely. And I mean, shadowing Julie Plec, what a terrible way to start right? I mean, if only they’d given you someone more experienced… Come on, that’s amazing!
Yeah! I mean, if you’re gonna shadow anybody, Julie Plec’s a good person to shadow to let her know how serious you are about directing.
Well, tell me about shadowing her. What was the biggest thing that you picked up from her? Because that’s not an experience everyone gets, to be next to her as she’s doing these things. So what’s the one thing that stuck with you?
You know, I’ve known Julie Plec for so many years here now. We go back to Vampire Diaries, and she wasn’t directing then, but now she is. And I do remember on the pilot, you know, it is about story for her. But also, it’s about these relationships. So when there is the romance or that connection, we really want to see those beats, and moments very, very clear. And we want to fall in love with this couple. So when they fall out of love, we’re just as hurt and damaged because of it. So those moments, they need to be very clear.
And on top of that, transitions. And what I mean by that is going from one scene to the next scene, make it as seamless and cohesive as possible. But also let your frames and your shots be beautiful. So just let the transition, so the episode flows as neatly and tightly as possible. Work on those transitions to go from scene to scene. If we’re leaving this scene, and this is what we’re ending with, what are we coming into in the next scene? She is a stickler for those and so you got to really be on top of that.
And you get a really fun setting to do those transitions in. You get to direct an episode with the wild, wild west mind scape. What were your thoughts upon finding out that part?
Well, it was mixed feelings. It was the feelings of joy and excitement that like, “Wow, this is a huge episode, and this landed on 4×09, which was my episode.” And then just as much of it feeling daunting, and me a bit terrified of like, “How the hell am I going to shoot this? What am I doing?” And so you just go to work. You get that week of prep, and you use every minute of your life to plan out each scene as best as you can. And you have a plan in place to do the coverage and to tell your story.
So, yes, I’m very lucky. I don’t know if that was a gift, or I just got lucky with 4×09 being a big episode. Or maybe because I’m a member of the family, as a director for the first time, they were like, we’re going to give you a big episode. And they trusted me with that, which I’m still to this day, extremely thankful for it. But it is a big episode.
Well let’s talk about being a member of the family. Because not only do you get to direct the rest of your Roswell family that you’ve been working with for four seasons, but you’re also directing some new friends, because you’ve got new characters this season. So some of these people, you know their ticks, but then the others are a little bit newer. How did that stretch you?
I do. I do. And for me, I just was very transparent with the cast, who are my friends, but also with them saying, like, “Whatever you need from me, let me know. Or if I’m coming at you in a way that doesn’t work for you, let me know. Let’s get ahead of it here.” And everybody was just very supportive and helped me out. If there was ever any moments of me struggling to give a note or to find a moment or beat in the scene, we were all on top of it. Just super, super collaborative.
And you know, our newcomers to this season are just such professionals and awesome, and it’s been a joy to work with them this season. But I would say we have a very special guest star for this episode in Shiri Appleby.
I was going to say! She’s a legend.
Yeah, who has been the OG member of the Roswell family. And what’s more amazing is, you know, we all know she’s directed a few episodes for us already. But this is the first time with her in front of the camera, in our world, playing in the sandbox with us. And so that was just such a special moment and super thankful for her for making it out, being a part of the show for us. But it is a big moment where we have our two female leads in Shiri Appleby and Jeanine Mason, and I think it’s very special.
Yes, let’s talk about Jeanine Mason. She’s incredible. And you get to introduce dark Liz in this episode, which I think is an actor’s dream to play an evil version of themselves.
Yes.
But from your directing standpoint, is there pressure to introduce this villainous version of our hero, who people have come to love over four seasons? Was there was there any apprehension there?
No, Jeanine was super excited. Because like you said, you play a character for at this point, four seasons, four years. And now you’re able to play the same person, but like, complete opposite? She was incredible in this episode.
Because I have to tell you — man, I mean, being number one on the call sheet and working day in and day out, it’s tough enough already. And for you to play two characters on top of that, doing scenes opposite yourself, you’re learning the lines of two separate characters who are totally different from one another. It is incredibly difficult. And she did an amazing job. I literally was just behind the monitor, because I know how talented she is.
And then I see her play this completely different character, making complete opposite choices, and they’re believable, and she’s making it look easy. And I know it’s hard, but she’s making it look so easy. I was so, so thankful for — I remember everyday just being like, “thank you” because she’s saving me! You know, it’s my first time directing an episode. I gotta make sure not only is this story being told through the lens, are these performances being told? And she came in so prepared. Which isn’t a surprise, but you just, you see it on a different level of her playing two characters, playing Liz and then having to go change, put on different makeup, change and become Outlaw Liz. And just knock it out of the park.

Star Saga Star Trek AU
Episode 1 Part 3
1.1 | 1.2
The stares when he walked into the mess hall didn’t bother Tobias at all. He’d expected as much, being the only one not in a uniform, and probably being known by enough of the officers for his departure from Starfleet Medical and time in the Maquis for the rumors to really go flying. What did bother him was the lack of options the replicator had. Sure, it was programmed with food from hundreds of different worlds--but only a few samples of each. He’d just wanted some tacos, but instead he was forced to find an empty table with only a small bowl of tomato soup. He took a spoonful, and made a face. He should have gone with Vulcan plomeek soup instead. It probably would have tasted more flavorful.
Someone stopped by his table. He ignored them, thinking they were probably just looking for somewhere to sit. Instead, the person pulled out another chair and sat down across from him.
“So, is it true?”
He looked up to see a plate of spaghetti and meatballs and a person with brown skin darker than his looking over them at him with what he could only describe as a mischievous look.
“Is what true?”
“Well, everyone has been saying a lot of different things about you. I thought I’d see if I could get the inside story.”
Tobias grunted, pushing his bowl to the side. “Who are you?”
“Ryan Faris. Lieutenant. Helm officer.”
“And what exactly do you want to know?”
“For starters, why you’re the only person in here not in a uniform.”
“I’m not in Starfleet.”
“Really.”
Tobias’s human upbringing made him a bit more sensitive to sarcasm than the average Vulcan, but he still wasn’t entirely sure if Ryan was being sarcastic or not. His tone didn’t sound like it, but that mischievous glint in his dark brown eyes made him question otherwise.
“I thought you went to the Academy?”
“I did.”
“And Starfleet Medical?”
“Yes. But I dropped out.”
“To join the Maquis?”
“Why are you asking about me if you already know?”
Ryan shrugged, shoving a rather large serving of pasta into his mouth. “Just trying to put the pieces together.” He chewed for a moment--not long enough, in Tobias’s amateur medical opinion--and swallowed. “Why’d you join them?”
“Personal reasons.” Tobias glanced around the mess hall, counting how many looks were being thrown their way. Ryan didn’t seem to notice. Or maybe he just didn’t care.
“What kind of personal?”
“That’s none of your business.”
“Some people say you were failing out anyway and just decided to become a Maquis for fun. Some people say you did it because you were having a passionate love affair with one of the members.”
“Do they?” He muttered, pulling the bowl back just so he’d have something to do with his hands. Humans weren’t the only ones who liked spreading rumors, but they did seem to be the best at it. The others just went along for the ride.
“My personal favorite is that you were given an assignment to infiltrate the Maquis while at Starfleet Medical. And that your arrest was just to make it more credible.”
“Well don’t let me shatter your illusion.”
Ryan laughed, taking another bite. “And here I thought an outlaw would be more fun.”
“I’m not an outlaw.”
“Sorry, former outlaw. Whatever.”
Tobias shot him a glare, but he wasn’t phased.
“Anyway, one of the consistent things people say is that you don’t like Starfleet.”
“Is it required?”
“Just seems a bit odd that you’d be here on a Starfleet ship, helping out with a mission if that were the case.”
Tobias didn’t say anything. He took another bite of his soup instead. Now it was cold and bland, but it still tasted better than this conversation.
“Everyone says you’re a bad luck charm. A bad influence. That anyone with sense would stay away from you.”
Tobias’s hand tightened around the handle of his spoon, hovering just above the liquid. He wasn’t surprised. And really, he shouldn’t be disappointed. What should he care what Starfleet people said, or even thought about him? But it still stung, somehow. Maybe because it was that very hypocrisy that had driven him away in the first place. Starfleet--and the Federation in general--prided itself on being so tolerant, so forgiving. They didn’t execute people. Prison was for rehabilitation, not punishment. There was no crime so heinous that pushed someone past the point of redemption. Those concepts were preached and touted as the very heart of Federation society. But in practice, that was hardly the case. If he ever even suggested applying to Starfleet again, he’d be laughed out of the room by the most decorated admirals. People given awards and metals for perfectly embodying Federation values were among those who whispered and stared--including Voyager’s very own first officer. He’d been reluctant to shake Tobias’s hand when they were introduced earlier, and wiped it on his uniform immediately afterward. Like he’d catch some Maquis cooties if he wasn’t careful. It made the anger under his skin flare up again, turning into gooseflesh down his arms.
Structure, logic, function, control, he thought, taking a deep breath. A structure cannot stand without a foundation. Logic is the foundation of function. Function is the essence of control. His hand loosened. I am in control. I am in control. The anger faded. Not entirely, but enough to make it the usual background noise again. He wasn’t even sure if that was the actual purpose of that Vulcan mantra, but it worked for him.
“And what do you say?” He asked.
“That I like to come to my own decisions instead of just listening to what other people tell me. And that I’ve never had much sense.”
“That’s not a very comforting thing to hear from the person responsible for flying this ship.”
He laughed. It was a very jolly sound, the kind of laugh you’d expect from someone who had never been through hard times in his life. Which wasn’t hard to believe, given how close Earth was to a utopia these days. For some people, anyway. “One of the people,” he corrected. “Lieutenant Stadi is the other.”
“I thought Voyager only needed one person at the helm.”
“Well that’s all it needs. For typical flight, anyway. But in tight situations, when we need more maneuverability, it works best with two.”
“And Voyager has better maneuverability than most Starfleet ships, from what I’ve heard.”
“Oh yes. It’s the bioneural circuitry. Cuts reaction time by… a lot.”
“Thanks for that precise answer.”
Ryan’s mouth twitched. “You do have a sense of humor! Are those pointed ears justs for show?”
“No,” he answered flatly. It was a rhetorical question anyway.
“Attention senior officers,” Captain Janeway’s voice came over the com loud and clear, “please report to the bridge.”
“Well, so much for all the fun we were having.” Ryan stood up, pushing his empty plate aside. “But duty calls.”
Tobias’s com badge clicked.
“Janeway to Jackson.”
He tapped on it, hidden just underneath his jacket. “Yes Captain?”
“Please come to the bridge as well. We’re approaching the Badlands.”
“On my way.”
“Come on,” Ryan said, patting him on the back. “I’ll escort you so you don’t commit any more crimes on the way.”
Tobias wondered if he’d be thrown off the ship and back into prison if he punched Ryan right there and then.
It probably wasn't worth finding out.

Ride or Die by OlivieBlake (A03)
Overall Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: The Death Eaters are an outlaw motorcycle club run by Tom Riddle, a notoriously ruthless leader who works the brotherhood into high stakes criminal activity after the death of their previous president. Draco Malfoy is heir to the throne, but his life abruptly changes when fate lands him in the hands of a young doctor.
Major Themes: Muggle AU/no magic at all, crime, star-crossed lovers vibe, Draco is down soooo bad, lots of smut, a sarcasm and wittiness all you can eat buffet.
Reason for Rating:
- I really enjoyed this story despite the fact that I don’t usually seek out Non-Magic AUs. It didn’t actually bother me that this was a Muggle AU because of the world building, characters, and story. Unlike some Muggle AUs where the characters are placed in a similar position to their magical counterparts, this fic is essentially a total deviation from the original HP story line. For instance, Draco and Hermione (and other characters) are meeting for the first time in this fic instead of some other Muggle AUs where they knew each other in school. Despite it’s deviation, this works extremely well for the fic and I enjoyed the progression of certain characters relationships because they had never met before.
- As for Dramione and how it is written in this fic, I’m pleasantly surprised. If you love a slow-burn this probably won’t be for you as the characters get together very early on. However, I recommend you to try this even if you do like a slow burn and I’m going to explain why… Although they get together early on, their story makes sense and doesn’t feel like it’s been rushed. Personally, it works because this isn’t supposed to be an enemies-to-lovers so there really isn’t a reason why they CAN’T get together sooner. Furthermore, it works because they do try to pull away, but they just can’t help but be pulled back to each other. AND WOW, that last aspect is really what I think made me go crazy over this fic on top of the fact that Draco is an absolute simp for Hermione in this. Like genuinely I loveeee when one side of a pairing would do absolutely anything for the other and cannot stop thinking about them. Makes me swoon.
- As for other characters, the author did such a great job of making you care for characters other than our main Dramione pairing. Which, believe me, is a hard feat. Usually I see characters other than Dramione purely as side characters and that is all; however, this fic made me actually care about the well-being of TWO other relationships. That genuinely made me laugh because I’ve never done that before. Literally I love Harry so much in this I thought about him AFTER reading it. I will say though, a lot of side characters can and might come across as Out Of Character, but like I mentioned before, this fic is almost so deviant from the original story it kind of isn’t the biggest deal that some side characters don’t act like they would normally.
- The world building in this is actually so enjoyable. I love the way the magical is turned muggle and doing so realistically and not seeming so ‘on the nose’.
- The story line (aside from the romance plot) is the reason for the slight point reduction of my rating. I want to preface that it isn’t necessarily a bad story line and for the most part it was the reason for some of my favorite character interactions. However, I deducted because near the end I felt my attention span for reading about it slipping away and I began skimming.
- I really loved the writing in this fic. The characters interact very naturally with each other which is so pleasing as someone who is obsessed with good dialogue. IMO there is some cringey dialogue, but I feel like that comes with the mafia territory. The relationships (lovers, enemies, friends, etc) are so good and I love how the author really uses micro-expressions and actions to Show rather than Tell. Finally, I think most people will enjoy that the writing style changes from time to time (i.e. court transcript, text messages, going back and forth between time) to really give you a STORY. And I bold the word story because it is truly story-telling that this fic gives.
Overall: This was a fic that I could not put down for two days and literally didn’t do anything with my time but finish it. Despite being a Muggle AU, which I don’t usually pick out, this was such a pleasant surprise of world building, character, and writing. I’d recommend this for readers who are feeling like all the Dramione fics they’re reading are melding into the same enemies-to-lovers/slow burn blob because it truly is something so different and yet still just as addictively enjoyable.
Again, this is ‘Ride or Die’ by OlivieBlake on A03.

Angsty Poem Prompts
I originally made this prompt list for personal use, but decided to make a rebloggable version. Feel free to use for your own writing prompts. 🥰
From Snow and Dirty Rain by Richard Siken
Leave me blurry and fall toward me with your entire body.
Imagine my legs crossed, my hair combed, the shine of my boots in the slatted light.
We can do anything. It’s not because our hearts are large, they’re not, it’s what we struggle with.
the knives in the kitchen are singing for blood, but we are at the crossroads, my little outlaw
and this is the map of my heart, the landscape after cruelty which is, of course, a garden, which is a tenderness, which is a room, a lover saying Hold me tight, it’s getting cold.
We have not touched the stars, nor are we forgiven
which brings us back to the hero’s shoulders and a gentleness that comes, not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it.
The lawn is drowned, the sky on fire, the gold light falling backward through the glass of every room.
I’ll give you my heart to make a place for it to happen, evidence of a love that transcends hunger.
Is that too much to expect? That I would name the stars for you? That I would take you there?
We’ve read the back of the book, we know what’s going to happen.
The fields burned, the land destroyed, the lovers left broken in the brown dirt.
And then it’s gone. Makes you sad. All your friends are gone. Goodbye Goodbye. No more tears.
I would like to meet you all in Heaven.
But there’s a litany of dreams that happens somewhere in the middle.
Moonlight spilling on the bathroom floor.
A page of the book where we transcend the story of our lives
Moonlight making crosses on your body, and me putting my mouth on every one.
We have been very brave, we have wanted to know the worst, wanted the curtain to be lifted from our eyes.
The dream going on with all of us in it.
It’s a fairy tale, the story underneath the story, sliding down the polished halls, lightning here and gone.
We make these ridiculous idols so we can pray to what’s behind them, but what happens after we get up the ladder?
Do we simply stare at what is horrible and forgive it?
Here is the river, and here is the box, and here are the monsters we put in the box to test our strength against.
Here is the cake, and here is the fork, and here’s the desire to put it inside us, and then the question behind every question: What happens next?
The way you slam your body into mine reminds me I’m alive
but monsters are always hungry, darling, and they’re only a few steps behind you, finding the flaw, the poor weld, the place where we weren’t stitched up quite right
I crawled out the window and ran into the woods.
I had to make up all the words myself. The way they taste, the way they sound in the air.
I passed through the narrow gate, stumbled in, stumbled around for a while, and stumbled back out.
I made this place for you. A place for you to love me.
If this isn’t the kingdom then I don’t know what is.
So how would you catalog it? Dawn in the fields? Snow and dirty rain? Light brought in in buckets?
I was trying to describe the kingdom, but the letters kept smudging as I wrote them
the hunter’s heart, the hunter’s mouth, the trees and the trees and the spaces between the trees, swimming in gold.
Explaining will get us nowhere.
I was away, I don’t know where, lying on the floor, pretending I was dead.
I wanted to hurt you but the victory is that I could not stomach it.
We have swallowed him up, they said. It’s beautiful, it really is.
We were in the gold room where everyone finally gets what they want, so I said What do you want, sweetheart? and you said Kiss me.
Here I am leaving you clues. I am singing now while Rome burns.
We are all just trying to be holy.
We are all going forward. None of us are going back.

Ooh! You'll have to excuse my enthusiam becasue I'd love to hear your answers for 💖 (What do you like most about your own writing?),😐 (What embarrasses you most about your own writing?), 😈 (Is there anything you enjoy doing that you think your readers hate?), and *of course* 🖊 (Post a snippet from a current WIP).
I'm going to start with 😐 (What embarrasses you most about your own writing?) because the rest will follow from that I think.
I live in a perpetual state of embarrassment and mild shame that I only write one thing. I am a one trick pony, and even if I've become pretty good at that trick. (perhaps excellent, I do like my ability to do it). (this is sad somewhat sarcastically) I can really only do one thing and it's not a serious thing. It's an embarrassing thing.
I really like to write pregnancy fic. I checked the tags and it's about 20% if I go by number of fics. My long fics (with very small exceptions) are about pregnancy, so really it's like 1.5 million words of my 2.5 million word count. (about 60%) That's embarrassing! So embarrassing. I should write real things that are important. (like plotty dark fic or slow burn and sex).
So I am embarrassed about that often, I'll get a new idea and its inevitably a babyfic idea, but I shouldn't writee it I already have all these babyfics and I should...
but writing is fun and if this is what I want to write, I can let myself be happy. Even if it's embarrassing.
I teach middle school and one of my *very* determined students found my AO3 and he asked me if I felt bad about it and...really it's very tame. It's not something HR would bring me in about. I write pretty vanilla mostly f/f babyfics. So also embarrassing but not really?
😈 (Is there anything you enjoy doing that you think your readers hate?)
I am inevitably writing the *wrong* thing. I've written many different pairings and I kind of go through phases. There's a Stargate Atlantis phase, a Star Trek TNG and Voyager phase, Once Upon a Time phase, Agents of Shield phase, Once Upon a Time again, Star Trek Discovery, Agents of Shield again, and Star Trek Discovery again. (this is where we are now).
Sometimes someone will very politely ask me to write something I haven't written in awhile, and...it's gone. At some point, I really enjoyed that pairing, and now it's just out of my head.
Some readers really hate pregnancy to and I do it a lot. Some people don't want to read about that, which is totally fine!
I was on a discord server where I had to spoil pregnancy and it absolutely was not the intent of the request, but it was such a shame thing. This is bad, you can't talk about it anywhere. Not even the NSFW channels. Most things had a place you could talk abut triggering topics but that one had to be spoiled on the whole server and it just took the fun out of it. I think that's more of a shame than an embarrassment, but they're connected.
I used to write Swan Queen (which is the big pairing in Once Upon a Time) and then I wrote Dragon Queen, which is tiny, and then I had some friends who liked Dragon Outlaw Queeen, and I wrote that, and that was a big thing. That got hate. (not my readers so much but)...that was messy.
I'm getting better at just doing what I want. (My current long fic is a Michael/Laira, so it's a tiny pairing, it's a pregnancy fic, so it's tiny tiny tiny and I love it, so that's what counts.).
💖 (What do you like most about your own writing?)
It made sense to do this one last. I love vulnerability. Frequently, I will see a character and I can't wait to see how she deals with vulnerability. Laira was like that. I was in love with her from the beginning of the season, and then she and Michael where working together, and I kept hoping she'd get injured in the last couple episodes (this was not what it was about and I'm not mad about it, but if it had been Laira gets injured on the bridge I would have been there for it) Episode 10 where she's SO vulnerable emotionally was what made me realize I wanted to write her and Michael, and then @aleksandrachaev wrote them together and damn.
I like exploring vulnerability. Sometimes it's intentional (rare, it's hard to offer to be vulnerable), often it is forced (injuries, illnesses, pregnancy). One of my favorite fics about (former emperor) Philippa, Michael and Tilly has Philippa injured, and balancing how much she cares about Michael and Tilly, how much she hates having them care about her (and actually, they all love each other very much it's just hard to talk about).
I don't know if I'm good at it, but it's what I love the most. Those are the fics of mine I reread. Certain parts of Quantum are my favorites, the fic where Laira's sick on Andoria...little things, and I love them.
(Laira is much easier to look after than Philippa.)
Someone needing to be taken care of and getting it, especially from a village of people who love them is one of my most favorite things about my own writing, and whenever I can do that. I'm happy.
Thank you so much for asking!

Borderlands’ movie adaptation stars Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis in sci-fi journey
Borderlands, the video game franchise that defined the looter-shooter genre, is poised to get its own cinematic universe — and it’s about time. All six base games in the series are well-loved by fans for their fantastical lore and quirky characters, who you better believe will be making their on-screen debut with director Eli Roth’s upcoming film adaptation of the franchise.
Tumblr media
There’s still a way to go before the film hits theaters this summer. In the meantime, IGN sat down with Roth and Randy Pitchford, founder of Gearbox Entertainment and an executive producer on the movie, to talk all things Borderlands ahead of tomorrow’s first official trailer release.
And if that weren’t enough, IGN can also exclusively reveal the new poster for the Borderlands movie, as shown below.
From the way Pitchford and Roth interact, even on a video call, you’d think they were brothers. They both exude the same fun-loving goofiness that makes Borderlands, well, Borderlands. To me, this was best exemplified by the way the two creative continued to interrupt one another with comedic anecdotes about their time on set.
But jokes aside, the two mesh well on a professional level which bodes well for this video game adaptation. Roth was given extensive creative liberty on the project while Pitchford was on stand-by as a resource to provide deeper insight on the original series.
Tumblr media
Obviously, it’s Randy’s baby, it’s his brainchild, and it’s everybody’s brainchild,” Roth said. “You’re stepping into a world that is so beloved and the fans are so hardcore that you think, ‘Okay, well, I really don’t want to screw this up.’”
Thankfully, Pitchford was open to pretty much everything. Roth recalled how Pitchford was even receptive to the idea of keeping Claptrap alive and entertained the Cabin Fever director’s various suggestions for how the robot might be able to expel bullets: “Is it like a tail goes up and… are they little rabbit pellets?”
In truth, it’s a blessing this adaptation was made, and it speaks highly to Pitchford’s faith in Roth as a director. Since the start of his career in the games industry, Pitchford said he’d been turning down requests to adapt his studio’s work into film. Ari Arad, who is now the producer of the upcoming Borderlands movie, came to Pitchford with several iterations of the script before the deal was sealed.
“Finally, we were playing League of Legends together one day, Ari and I. He was the support and I was the ADC,” Pitchford explained. “We were talking on chat, like on Discord, about the possibility of a movie while we were playing.”
(In an ironic twist, the Gearbox Entertainment founder clarified that he was playing as Caitlyn, who he says “was completely ripped off from Mad Maxi from Borderlands, by full comfortable admission of the Riot team.”)
From there, the two began to play video games together frequently, which gave Pitchford the confidence to finally sign off on developing a film adaptation of the Borderlands series. (So I guess business deals don’t happen on the golf course anymore.
Tumblr media
As in the game, the upcoming film will take place on the fictional planet of Pandora for an action-packed adventure featuring some of the franchise’s most beloved characters. In this all-new interpretation of the video game series, viewers will see the red-headed outlaw Lilith unite with a team of unlikely heroes to locate a missing girl who could change the fate of the universe.
“At a certain point you just have to pick, these are our characters, this is the story we’re going with, and let’s just make the best one possible,” Roth told me, reflecting on the decision-making process of what characters would appear in the upcoming film.
Because the movie is not canon to the video game series, the creative team behind the Borderlands movie had free reign to select from the unique cast of characters across the franchise — some of whom don’t appear until later games in the original storyline.
The film features a star-studded line-up of performers led by Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett as Lilith alongside Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Kevin Hart as Roland, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Gina Gershon as Moxxi.
Other additions to the full cast list include Edgar Ramírez, Bobby Lee, Janina Gavankar, Olivier Richters, Cheyenne Jackson, Benjamin Byron Davis, Charles Babalola, Steven Boyer, Ryann Redmond, Paula Andrea Placido, and more.
“I was like, ‘Find me the weirdest, gnarliest people. We’ll put them in the movie.’ And everybody, they loved it,” Roth said.
Roth and Pitchford shed light on what it was like convincing some of these actors to say “yes.” We obviously had to find out what made someone like Blanchett pull the trigger on a project like this, and the answer is, honestly, heartwarming.
In our conversation, Roth likened the Tár actor to one of the three greatest female performers in history. Their working relationship dates back to the director’s 2018 fantasy film, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, in which Blanchett starred alongside Black. So, when it came time to figure out who would be a fitting lead for the Borderlands cast, there was no doubt in Roth’s mind that the Oscar winner was the best pick.
“I think with me, she has permission to go a little bit weird and a little bit insane because it’s like, ‘Well, it’s Eli,’” Roth said. “It’s just like, ‘Let’s go have fun.’ But she’s obviously very serious about her character.”
For Curtis, the decision to join the cast was largely spurred by her gamer daughter, who is a fan of the Borderlands franchise, saying “‘Mom, you have to do this movie,’” as Pitchford recalled.
In Black’s case, the roots run even deeper. Back in 2012, he brought his son to E3 when Borderlands 2 was first being teased. Black asked Pitchford for a demo of the game, and the Gearbox founder told him that he would have to play Claptrap if a film adaptation of the franchise were ever to be made. The Nacho Libre star, of course, readily agreed.
“Whether you’ve played a Borderlands game or not, it’s a fun movie. It’s a really, really fun movie,” Pitchford said.
Borderlands will be released in U.S. theaters by Lionsgate on Aug. 9, 2024.
