I've been thinking about how I could contribute to the ACD/Granada Sherlock Holmes fandom for a while, seeing as I'm neither an artist, a writer, or anything actually useful lol. But then I realized something I myself always treasure are curated fic recs, which I could actually do! I've read probably like 25% of all the h/w ACD and Granada fics on ao3, so I compiled a short list for anyone who is just starting out with the fandom. Without further ado, may I present

The Adventure of the Doctor's Heart by mistyzeo 12k | Rated E Summary: Holmes has observed much of Watson's habits and tastes over time, which is why it surprises him when his friend objects strangely to a folk song sung at the conclusion of a case. Disturbed by the Doctor's unexpected display of emotion, Holmes becomes determined to lift his spirits by any means necessary, with mixed results. Notes: obviously if you're going to read canonverse h/w, you are going to read mistyzeo. this one is just so good and angsty and features music (!!). it's got some steaminess but it also has wooing. basically it has everything you ever need. this is my odyssey, my iliad, my hamlet, etc.

Cameo by what_alchemy 8k | Rated M | For Archive Users Only Summary: Holmes and Watson become embroiled in a case Scotland Yard refuses to acknowledge. A soulmate AU. Notes: i honestly skipped over this fic for a while, since i'm not the biggest fan of soulmate aus. do not make the same mistake i did, because this shit HITS. this fic has hit after hit: soulmate-mark based case for our main duo, angst, hiatus feels, MORE ANGST, and ofc a happy ending. ugh. read this fic if you enjoy being happy.

A Tide That Does Not Turn by tweedisgood 3k | Rated T Summary: Holmes is a very bad patient with a devoted doctor who adores him. Watson wishes it was safe to speak up, but his friend is a tide that does not turn. Notes: do NOT read this if you don't like angst... ok now i'm sensing a pattern. anyways this is the first hurt/no comfort fic i read for this tag and i literally have cried more than enough tears over it. poor, poor watson :( iconic author though, read everything they write!

The Adventure of the Glad Outlaw by radondoran 7k | Rated T Summary: While Sherlock Holmes solves the mystery of a student's disappearance, Dr. Watson is more puzzled by the changing dynamic between his flatmate and himself. Notes: cute pastiche! a nice little mystery and a nice little get-together. ahhhhhh.... this fic is like cotton candy to me, so sweet and fluffy. defo recommend

Hands by MinorObsessions (draculard) 1.4k | Rated T Summary: Naturally, there are some things Watson thinks about Holmes that don't make it into the books. Notes: i'm also in the star trek fandom, so if you know anything about that then you know that hands are kind of A Thing in both circles and ergo i now Have A Thing about hands. so this is a nice little ode to holmes' hands, featuring some doctoring by watson AND a nice reverse appraisal at the end. it's so sweet :)

Conductor of Light by ColebaltBlue  1.4k | Rated T Summary: A Victorian stiff upper lip won't prevent you from falling in love, but it might prevent you from realizing it. Notes: they finally get their shit together! honestly i would recommend this fic to anyone just starting out with h/w fics in any medium. the characterization and dialogue is A1, and their argument is really realistic to me, idk. also features the iconic HOUN quote for its title so props to that!

A (Mis)fortunate Man by sans_patronymic 1.5k | Rated T Summary: December, 1880. Watson writes a note which may be his last. December, 1899. Watson writes back. Notes: READ THE TAGS BEFORE READING. this was a gut-wrenching read but god i cried at the end for watson. don't worry, this one has a happy ending. ugh now i wish there was a second chapter where watson lets holmes read the letters. to sum up: oof, my heart

The Second Smartest Man in London by FairSinner 73k | Rated E Summary: Dr John Watson returns from Afghanistan to Victorian London, wounded, traumatised and alone. When he meets Sherlock Holmes, his life begins to seem worth living again. But Holmes is a man who despises sentiment and Watson cannot seem to expunge it from his heart. Notes: congrats, you've made it to the end!! so now i must confess that it's been a loooong time since i've read this fic, but the private note i left on my bookmark was just "holy shit", so i'm sure it's a banger. i'm also sure it has angst because i love angst and i love bookmarking angst so i can read it again and again and suffer infinitely. enjoy :)

Rewriting Sherlock Holmes

These are some of my very favorite fandom takes on ACD stories! From reinterpretations of case details and resolutions, to romances that weave in pieces of the canon cases, and beyond. 

The Truth of the Musgrave Ritual by @mydwynter

This retelling of the Musgrave Ritual takes Holmes & Watson from friends to lovers, after a comment from Musgrave, an old school friend of Holmes. I recently rewatched the Granada series and got SUCH an urge to read this after watching the Musgrave episode. Mydwynter does such a great job with the tone! 

Hound by okapi

This one takes some liberties with Hound of the Baskervilles -- both with the details of the case and of our detective’s personal life. Here, Holmes & Watson have come to an arrangement that suits them both. Sir Henry, however, threatens to disrupt their happy situation. There’s a moment here that always sticks out to me: ‘“Does he always return his own cigarette case at two o’clock in the morning?” he asked with one raised eyebrow and a smirk.“Yes,” I replied and poured us another drink.’ Maybe one of my favorite confirmations of coupledom! 

The River Variations by withoutawish

This is one of my all-time favorite fics! I re-read it over and over again. It’s a modern take on the Three Garridebs. In my experience, a lot of Garridebs fics use John being injured as a catalyst for a relationship beginning. In this fic, it works differently -- their relationship, in a way, leads to the injury. This fic has it all: there are some lovely lines, some lovely moments, and quite a bit of angst, as John & Sherlock figure out where they stand. There’s a rare John mind palace appearance, a Sherlock who puzzles over John’s intentions, and a great ballet allegory. What’s not to love???

I keep coming back to this fic! This is another that, after rewatching the Granada episode, I HAD to read right away. Lifeonmars reimagines the case in a really creative, modern way, fitting the BBC Sherlock setting. There’s a truly stunning moment of realization for John, based heavily in canon. It’s one I can feel viscerally, along with John, thanks to the great writing. It opens a whole new way of seeing for our boys. Bonus points for Sherlock’s hidden strength, tongue-in-cheek references to the original, and a great display of John in all his conductor-of-light glory. 

That Which Gives Extras by Kate Forsyth

I may have saved the best for last. This retelling of the Naval Treaty is one that I truly will never tire of. When an old school “friend” of Watson’s finds himself in serious trouble, Watson is forced to deal with the consequences of a youthful fling. This fic has an interesting dynamic, where the main conflict divides Watson & Holmes. However, they come together (very dramatically -- at a train station -- be still my heart!) and of course solve the case. Do yourself a favor & read Kate’s work, if you haven’t already.

Mental Health Series - Autism

Let's talk a little about Mental Health? BBC Sherlock, as other series, just flirt a little with the theme, using it for comic relief or plot proposes. Consequently, it doesn't develop the subject satisfyingly, fixing on stereotypes and creating, most of the time, a superficial or even inaccurate representation. But thank god fandom gave us fanfiction, so we could fix that.

This series will contain an edit picture, a little text talking about the subject of the day and a fic rec with fanfics that abbord the theme.

The conditions and disorders in this edits are the ones that were explicitly mentioned in the series.

AUTISM

"Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that involves persistent challenges in social interaction, speech and nonverbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviors. The effects of ASD and the severity of symptoms are different in each person.

ASD is usually first diagnosed in childhood with many of the most-obvious signs presenting around 2-3 years old, but some children with autism develop normally until toddlerhood when they stop acquiring or lose previously gained skills. Autism is a lifelong condition. However, many children diagnosed with ASD go on to live independent, productive, and fulfilling lives."

One of the most common headcannons on the fandom, an autistic Sherlock isn't a discussion exclusive to the BBC Sherlock fandom. The debate includes not only the Canon, but other adaptations like Elementary, Granada Holmes and Miss Sherlock. In the BBC Series, this is hinted on a conversation between John and Lestrade in The Hounds of Baskerville.

A Case of Immortality by KCS, 2k, General: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson meet for the first time since the close of World War I, finding that though the world has changed certain important things have not. 

The Relevance of Goodness by maynecoon76, 1k, General, Hiatus:  One friend offers him safety, the other believes him dead. At the end of the day Victor Trevor begins to understand Sherlock Holmes’ decision. POV Victor Trevor.

Sixfold in Scarlet by methylviolet10b, 3k, General, domestic, angst and humor: Five times Holmes should have called for Watson, and one time he did. Inspired by the initial conversation between Holmes and Watson in “A Study in Scarlet.”

Observations in Endurance by Maimat, 5k, General, H/C: During a chase, Watson falls and is left behind just to find himself face to face with the gang they where chasing: “Now thoroughly soaked and cold, I reminded myself several times that I was the one who instigated my confinement down here as an alternative to being murdered.”

The First Irregular by aristofranes, 5k, General: Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective to … nobody in particular, actually, is struggling to make his mark on the world of criminal investigation. But, when his pocket is picked, Holmes spots a business opportunity that might just help to revitalise his flagging fortunes.

Notes: not-your-mother's vampire au, that's for sure. definitely read the tags before getting into this but man, this fic is so, so good. features not only vampire!holmes but also dark!holmes and it's a ride from beginning to end. ugh i want to talk more about this fic but i can't spoil anything!!

Into darkness then without a candle by Solshine (@/thehumantrampoline on tumblr) 10k | Rated T Summary: At first, Moriarty is just a disguise, like all the rest in his wardrobe; a helpful alias to bring Holmes closer to the evils he duels. And then the disguise wins at the Reichenbach Falls. AU inspired by the stage play, “The Secret of Sherlock Holmes." Notes: i can't even get into this. I CAN'T EVEN GET INTO THISSSS. there are no words. if there were, the word would be: UGH. this is such a unique fic and watson really pulls through in this. I CAN'T EVEN GET INTO THIS RIGHT NOW.

Back to Edinburgh by mightymads 4k | Rated T Summary: The Jezail bullet in Watson’s leg causes him so much pain that he is on the verge of despair. London doctors deem it impossible to extract the bullet without inevitable nerve damage. Holmes finds a surgeon in Edinburgh, who agrees to help. It is none other than Professor Joseph Bell. Notes: Dr. Bell says 'gay rights'! also Scottish Watson for the win! this is such a beautiful story, Watson really gets to take the center stage while Holmes gets to worry for his well-being. oh how the tables have turned. plus lots of ACD's personal life mixed with Watson's own, which I think makes this such a unique fic. it's just really nice to read. *chef's kiss*

The Red Notebook by Garonne 10k | Rated T Summary: Holmes is dead, or seems to be. Watson starts to write, and Mycroft starts to read. Holmes/Watson slash set during the Hiatus. Mycroft's POV. Notes: i LOVE Mycroft POVs, and this is one of my favorites. also i love fics that depict watson's stories as completely false, like Moriarty is not real and 'The Final Problem' was just john's way of coping. STELLAR FIC.

Some Power of Selection by wordybirdy 12k | Rated E Summary: John Watson is a struggling doctor in recent practice on London's Upper Wimpole Street. One dreary Wednesday, an urgent telegram summons him to 221B Baker Street, where he meets a sombre and initially taciturn gentleman by the name of Sherlock Holmes. Sparks immediately fly – but not of the positive, life-affirming variety... Notes: enemies to lovers AU for the win! Stamford is such a knob in this one, truly. but that's okay, our heroes figure themselves out anyways. great banter in this one, if you like rom-coms then this is the fic for you!
