i'm not gonna say this again bc it doesn't really matter, but every other day somebody incorrectly tags one of the medieval illuminations that i post with #marginalia. not all images/illuminations in manuscripts are called marginalia! only the ones in the margins of a page are (and marginalia can also be annotations, comments, etc.). most of the images that i post would more accurately be described as "miniatures".

now that we've got this out of the way, i can share a cool linguistic fact that i just learnt! the word "miniature" doesn't etymologically derive from latin "minor"/"minimus" (meaning small, less, etc). it comes from "minium", meaning red lead, bc that was used for painting! the similarity of "miniature" to "minor" just kind of weirdly influenced people's understanding and usage of the word "miniature"??
