Trigger warning to anyone who suffers with an eating disorder!!
I decided to write these headcanons because I've been having a really tough two weeks, and thinking of the twst boys makes me happy...
I hope this can maybe bring comfort to someone else, or at least provide some bit of entertainment. My intention is not to cause harm or trigger anyone. That is the last thing I want.

One more quick thing: I will be posting requests this week! I’ve already broken several promises that I made in regards to the time I’d post, and I feel horribly guilty. I’m sorry for the wait. I know I shouldn’t tell you to expect something on a certain day and then delay it for weeks. I should be honest about my efficiency, and I am sorry.
I'm also sorry for not responding to message (this applies to all my blogs...) I see them, but then forget about them, and then cower away because I feel like I'm already too late. I hope this little apology is enough to suffice... I'll apologize properly to every person when I find the courage. I know I shouldn't be doing this to people who've been kind to me just because I feel unwell. Please know that I am very sorry, and I'm trying to be more responsible and less careless to those around me.

So that's why your skin is so dry and you have bags under your eyes
He scolds you at first. He believes that you’re starving to get a good figure, and he tries to inform you that doing so is unhealthy and that being malnourished actually makes a person quite ugly.
As if you haven’t already heard all this before
You try to tell him that you’re not doing this to look good. At least, not anymore. Sure, it started out as a way to lose weight, but it soon became an obsession much more meaningful than beauty or weight-loss.
He doesn’t understand. Why would you deliberately hurt yourself like that? Especially when you’re aware of all these negative outcomes?
Nevertheless, he is still very worried about you
He wouldn't normally concern himself with such a personal problem, but he would feel so guilty if he just stood back and watched you whither away
So, he does, indeed, go out of his way to try and help you
He finds a psychology book about eating disorders in the library, and he reads it in its entirety
He is... quite disturbed. He never imagined that you could be suffering so badly.
He's smart enough to realize that he, himself, can't do anything to make you better
He encourages you to seek professional help, and he even searches for phone numbers you can call and therapists/counselors close by of whom you can see
You are really touched by his efforts to find help, and you promise him that you will see one of the counselors he recommended
But... several weeks go by, and you haven't done anything
Vil grows furious. Don’t you want help!?
He takes your lack of seeking help rather personally... He went out of his way to provide with the things he felt that you really needed. Don’t you appreciate that? Don’t you care about yourself? What more do you want him to do?
You try to tell him that you don’t want him to do anything, that you’ll find help when you’re ready--
Vil isn’t buying that
What does “ready” mean, anyways? When you’re already in the grave?
He’s a bit harsh on you... He points out the patches of dry skin along your neck and chest, the way the hairs of your arms always stand on end from goosebumps, the metallic taste in your mouth...
Are you happy with those things? Do you really want to live this way?
You try and try to explain to him that it’s hard to get help and go back to eating normally
It spirals into an argument...
Vil is done with this. He did what he could and got you the resources you need to begin recovery. Once you decide to get help, he will be there for you. He will be there whenever you reach out for support, comfort, or care. But, until then, don’t talk to him about it. Don’t complain about your misery until you have sought proper help. It’s your fault at this point, isn’t it?
Rook Hunt
He had noticed that you were very quickly losing a lot of weight
He was concerned, but he never imagined that the problem could be something so serious
You're actually surprised with just how much he's concerned. You thought that if there was anyone to romanticize such a disease, it would be him
But he seems to know more than you thought about such disorders
He begs you to get professional help, and he is quite a bit more pushy and earnest than Vil is...
You try to explain to him that no doctor or therapist could ever help unless you were READY and WANTED to be helped
Well, he doesn't understand why you don't want help
He's pushing and pushing you... begging you to seek a professional
You get so frustrated that you turn and leave. He just doesn't understand!
And now Rook is even more distressed. How will he ever get through to you? How can he ever help you?
Now, every time he sees you, he looks at you with such sorrow
He sadly remarks upon how your beauty is fading... and how he fears that your life may be fading as well
Your heart aches to hear such sincere worry... Your chest feels tighter than it normally does as you crumble with guilt
You promise yourself you'll get better... Just so you won't have to see Rook with a horribly sad expression whenever he passes you
You start eating more in front of him to ease his worry, which does work a little bit
You add about 400 more calories to your usual intake--enough so that your "recovery" becomes visible through the way you bounce with energy
But you stay up late at night, running laps and doing situps to burn off some of that intake
And you keep losing weight
In fact, it's worse now because your body is aching from the unfamiliar intake and exercise...
Well, at least you look better
At least you have Rook fooled
Or so you think. It'll only be a matter of weeks before he catches onto your schemes and grows so distressed once again
He tries to sit you down and have a talk with you... He just really wants you to get help
Epel Felmier
Poor Epel finds out after he witnesses you collapsing in the middle of the hallway when no one else is around
He panics and rushes to your side, trying to see what is wrong and how he can help you
You blacked out for several seconds, which is why you collapsed, but even though you have your vision back, everything is still very cloudy and you are too weak to stand up
This makes Epel panic even more
You try to calm him down, despite your weakness
"it's okay, Epel...! Just get me something to eat. Please, I need something to eat. Hurry!"
He is a bit confused, but he does what you say, and he rushes off to find you some food
While he is gone, you try to stand, but to no avail. Your stomach aches with hunger and you are cold all over. Your body just feels so miserable
He rushes back to you with an apple and places his hands on your shoulders in concern as you quickly eat it down
That apple... It's the best thing you've ever tasted, but it's gone too quickly, and your mouth waters for more as the last bites slide down your throat
Although it was small, it still gives your body such a blissful burst of energy. All your senses are ignited now that you have finally eaten something after such a long fast, and your head is hurting far less
You stand up and smile at Epel, thanking him graciously before turning to leave
Uuuhhhhh.... What was that?
You suddenly collapse on the ground and then are all better after eating a simple apple?
No way is Epel going to let you go just like that. He holds you back, demanding an explanation, for it surely seems you know quite a bit about this bizarre thing that just happened
You try to tell him it's nothing, just a strange thing that happened this one time
Well, then, how did you know how to fix it by eating something?
You quickly lie and tell him you get dizzy sometimes and fall due to low blood sugar
Well, now your story is inconsistent
He presses you for the truth, growing rather angry
His harsh tone begins to scare you, and you tell him... You tell him that, sometimes, you go days without eating, and it of course causes you to grow so weary that you faint
You watch as all the frustration quickly rushes away from Epel's face, leaving his eyes wide and mouth hanging open in shock
"That... That's really unhealthy..."
Oh, great. Not this speech again
But, it actually isn't a lecture about how this is such a "dangerous diet"
Instead, Epel pours out all his concern with a sad look upon his face
He knows that he can't do much, but he assures you that you can come to him if ever things become too tough to handle
You're touched by his offer, and you thank him for his understanding
But, now, everytime he's around, he watches you with care to see if you're doing alright and to make sure you don't fall over again
You hadn't expected him to worry this much...
If Epel ever thinks that things are getting out of hand, he will likely go behind your back to someone who can help for your sake

He really wishes that he hadn't found out because now he can't stop worrying
This is the kind of thing that would just be easier to ignore and shut away from his mind
But how could he possibly ignore something as serious as this?
He keeps telling himself that this isn't supposed to be his issue
But... It is his issue, isn't it? If you ended up dying and he knew all along about your suffering yet did nothing to help, than that would mean that he aided in your death, right?
He's really starting to panic. He doesn't what you dead. Not at all
But... What is he supposed to do???
He calms himself down and tries to think
Perhaps if he built you a mechanical body that didn't need food this whole thing would seize to be a problem...
No, bad idea
Well, that will be his last resort if nothing else works...
He messages you and tries to plead with you to please just eat and take care of yourself...
You message back, explaining to him that it really isn't that simple
He decides to ask why you're doing this, and he tries to show through his words how much he really cares
You feel comfortable enough in telling him some of the reasons why you think you started, and why it's now so hard to stop and all you want is to continue with it...
Idia is happy that you were able to open up to him this much, but what is he really supposed to do with this information? He's no therapist...
Well, being vulnerable with you emotions and talking about the problem is at least one step in the right direction, isn't it?
Idia continues to try to be a source of comfort for you, while also encouraging you to seek proper help

Ortho is a mess... so distressed. He can’t understand--he doesn’t have the capacity to understand such a disorder, and he is so frustrated that nothing he does is helping!
And he does everything
He exhausts himself trying to “fix your mind”
His eyes are wide, yellow irises shaking with misery
Knowing that you are willingly hurting yourself actually traumatizes him...
He can't wrap his head around such an awful mental illness. To him, it looks as though you're really trying to harm, hurt, and even kill yourself by your own accord
Something must be wrong with your brain, but he just doesn't know what!
The poor child is so upset. He's panicked and worried sick
And now you feel even worse
Sorry for ending on such a horrible note... I was originally going to have all the dorms, so Diasomnia would’ve come and saved the day, but I just didn’t finish them.

Learn How I Lost 150 Pounds in Just 4 Months
This is not just another fad diet book of which fill libraries, bookstores, and the internet, but the true story of how I lost 150 pounds in about 4 months (and kept the pounds off). A story, which I believe anyone who can walk, will benefit from.
First let me back up a bit and explain how a middle-aged 6 0 male with a medium to large frame got to be 335 pounds. Well, it wasnt hard and didnt seem to take all that long. It was eating lots of fast food, burgers, and little to no exercise over the course of a few years. Sound familiar? In my 30s and 40s I was fairly active with scuba diving and just in my job itself. Then all of a sudden my job changed to where I sit at a computer eight hours a day (and still do), instead of being a busy technician building and testing things.
With age also came the slowdown of my bodys metabolism (I am now 54), coupled with a sit down job and eating lots of fatty burgers and other high calorie meals. Especially bad was eating big meals just before going to bed. It didnt take long to find myself at 335 pounds. I blew up like a big fat whale and my huge belly hung way over my belt line. I had to buy 3X shirts and 50 waist trousers to go around my bulk. I looked and felt just awful.
The time came when I finally said enough is enough! I was not feeling good, was out of breath all the time, and could hardly walk up the stairs to the bedroom. I went out and bought a good digital bathroom scale and weighed myself the next morning (undressed and after using the bathroom). The max limit on the scale was 330 pounds. The scale gave me an error message (a big fat capital E). That meant I was heavier than 330 pounds! Oh my God I thought! It cant be! That morning, I weighed myself at work on the shipping scales. My weight was about 340 pounds fully dressed and after eating breakfast. That meant my true morning weight was around 335 or so.
Steps I took to lose the pounds
I knew I didnt want (or could afford) to buy expensive exercise equipment. Nor did I want to spend a lot of money to join a health club. There had to be a better way. I did some research on the internet about aerobics and metabolism (the rate at which the body burns fuel) and came to the conclusion the answer to my weight problem was to increase my metabolism through aerobic exercise, and by changing my eating habits. The strict definition of aerobic is with oxygen. The body uses oxygen to burn fuel. Aerobic exercise improves oxygen consumption by the body and burns fuel more efficiently. I learned that aerobic exercise (like walking at a brisk pace for 20 or more minutes without stopping), will increase the bodys metabolism (perhaps up to several hours), even after you stop exercising. This is just one of the added perks of aerobics.
I would encourage everyone reading, to search the internet on metabolism and aerobics. There is much more information there than I can possibly put here, or need to. The information is abundantly available no need for me to re-invent the wheel.
After getting freaked out when my new digital bathroom scale went Tilt, this is what I did
1. I created a spreadsheet on my home computer so I could track and record my weight each Saturday morning (you can choose any day you wish, as long as you are consistent on when you weight yourself). Once a week is best.
2. I researched the internet about losing weight, and learned about metabolism, aerobics and aerobic exercise (and how they affect the body and calories). I figured I should be about 180-185 pounds for my height and frame, so I adjusted my daily calorie intake for that body weight. No special diets to speak of, just calorie intake adjustment, although I do try and eat healthy foods most of the time.
3. I invested in a good pair of walking shoes. This is critical!
4. I measured out one mile (using the odometer of my car), and timed how long it took me to walk one mile at a brisk pace (brisk pace meaning walking fast enough to elevate my heart and respiration rate). It took me 20 minutes to walk one mile. A 20-minute mile is not all that fast, but fast enough for someone weighing 335 pounds. And 20 minutes is the minimum workout time for aerobic exercise to be beneficial to the heart. My course was nothing more than the sidewalks of my neighborhood. Partly homes and apartments, and partly businesses.
5. I walked one mile per day, everyday, for about the first month (a 20-minute walk after dinner). I noticed my energy level was building and I felt better. After about the first 10 days, my digital bathroom scale began to give me a number instead of the big fat E error message. Definite progress!
6. The second month I increased my distance to one and a half miles a day (or a 30-minute walk after dinner). The soreness in my legs gradually disappeared.
7. I continued this pattern of increasing the distance by one-half mile until I was up to six miles per day (doing three miles before work and three miles after work). Six miles a day may be a bit extreme, so you may want to adjust your walks accordingly. But it worked for me and got to the point where I could walk three miles without breaking into a sweat. The pounds melted off!
8. After I lost nearly 100 pounds, I scaled back to four miles a day (two before work and two after work). I walk the miles faster too, about a 17-minute mile).
9. After 4 months, I reached 185 pounds and thats apparently where my body wants to be. I continue to walk four miles everyday, watch my daily calorie intake, and have stabilized at 185 pounds.
Do I still eat a big fat juicy burger and ice cream once in awhile? OH YES! I love that stuff! But I religiously weight myself each Saturday morning and my weight seems to be happy and steady at 185. I dont deprive myself of the foods I love, but I have learned what, when, and how much I can eat and get away with. One has to experiment and adjust accordingly.
I look forward each day to my walks. In fact, I get a sense of accomplishment after each walk. A fringe benefit I guess. Another fringe benefit is that walking is a great stress reliever especially after a hard day at the office. All in all, I am in much better health. That 150-pound barbell I was carrying around all day is gone. My heart and cardiovascular system is much healthier all due to walking.
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits (other than the obvious health benefits) is that the people in the neighborhood and the storekeepers stop me all the time and comment on how I look. These are the people who would see me walk by their homes and stores each day. They saw a once very fat person transformed into a thin person.
The bottom line
I was sick of being obese and I knew it was killing me and that I needed to do something and quick. I was a sure candidate for a heart attack or stroke. After doing a little research, I found the best way for me was aerobic walking coupled with a change in eating habits. There other types of exercises that will work too, but I believe nothing is as good for the human body then walking. The benefits are enormous and the cost is, well, the price of a good pair of walking shoes and comfortable clothes. Its enjoyable too! Forget those expensive boring indoor treadmills! Go for a walk in the great outdoors!
If you can walk, have a place to walk, by all means go for it! If you are like me, you will increase your energy a hundred fold. Start off slow at first if you are way out of shape, a few minutes a day. Walk briskly and swing those arms. Increase until you can do a mile, then a mile and a half, and so on and so on until you reach your goal weight. This is a lifelong commitment, so dont stop after reaching your goal weight.
My family and friends at work all say I am half the man I used to be. They are not very far off! I went from wearing 3X shirts and 50 waist trousers, to wearing large shirts and 34 waist trousers. Yeah, I had to buy all new clothes but I didnt mind the expense one bit.

How to Intermittent Fast and Which Type of Fasting Is Right For You
Intermittent fasting has taken the world by storm. No longer is it the province of fitness freaks. No longer do you get weird looks because you skipped the break room donuts. Now you’ve got grandmothers trying it and doctors recommending it. It’s here, the benefits are legion, and you’re interested. But how should you do it? Are there different types of intermittent fasting? Are there different benefits associated with the various flavors of IF?
Thinking about fasting, reading about fasting, and reciting the benefits of fasting are all pointless if you don’t know how to go about doing it.
First, the most fundamental concept central to all the flavors of intermittent fasting is not eating. Skipping meals, skipping entire days of meals, letting yourself get a little hungry. There’s no getting around that. It will happen. let’s go over the different variations of fasting. I’ll give a quick rundown. Each involves not eating for a period of time, unsurprisingly.
A couple other rules that apply to all the given methods:
Sleeping hours (provided you don’t sleep-eat) count as fasting hours.
Eat well regardless. While some fasting plans tout their adherents’ ability to eat crappy food and still lose weight, I’m not interested in fasting solely as a weight loss method. Keep your food Primal as possible.

12:12, 16:8, 18:6, or 20:4 Intermittent Fasting
As the names suggest, these breakdowns of intermittent fasting involves fasting for either 12, 16, 18, or 20 hours and taking in all of your food for the day over the remaining window of hours.
How to find out which fasting length is the the best one for you? There’s only one way. You have to experiment.
You can start with a 12:12 intermittent fast, which comes with the benefits of intermittent fasting and is easy to do for most people. You stop eating a couple of hours before bedtime, and delay breakfast a couple of hours after waking. If that works well, extend your fasting period the next day, and repeat until you find the eating and fasting pattern that feels good.
Lots of diets have added more detail to the intermittent fasting model, but bare-bones intermittent fasting is simply a shorter feeding period.
If you’ve heard of Leangains, Martin Berkhan’s incredibly popular fasting protocol, you’ve heard of 16:8 intermittent fasting. How does it work?
A daily 16 hour fast during which you eat nothing containing calories. Coffee, tea, and other non-caloric fluids are fine. Some people get away with a little cream in their drink.
A daily 8 hour eating window.
Three days of weight training, ideally performed at the tail end of the fasting period. To improve performance and muscle protein synthesis, you have the option of consuming 10 grams of branched chain amino acids 10 minutes before the workout.
Always eat high protein.
On training days, eat more carbs and less fat.
On rest days, eat more fat, fewer carbs, and slightly reduce calories.
Most people begin their fast after dinner (say, 9 PM), workout in the afternoon (at around 12 PM), and break their fast immediately post-workout (at around 1 PM), but you can use any schedule you prefer as long as you hit the 16 hours of fasting.
Your post-workout meal should have about 50% of your day’s caloric allotment (a real feast).
Who should try it?
12 or 16 hours isn’t a long time to wait for a meal, which makes intermittent fasting a great model for anyone who wants to experiment with fasting. One benefit of fasting this way is that it’s not that long a fast – you eat every day. It is totally doable. Whether you add the detailed lifting days and carb days is up to you.
Women may have better success with slightly shorter fasting windows—12-14 hours long instead of 16 hours. To understand why, check out my post on women and fasting.
People with steady eating schedules will have more success than people with erratic schedules. A huge benefit of intermittent fasting is the hormonal entrainment induced by regular feeding times. Once you get locked into your routine, your hunger hormones will adapt to the schedule, and the fasting should get easier, or even effortless. For this reason, it’s a good idea to get a feeding schedule and stick to it.
OMAD — One Meal a Day
Ori Hofmekler’s plan is based on the feast-and-fast concept:
Eat one meal a day, at night, and make it a big one. A real feast. You have three or four hours to eat until full. So it’s basically 20/4 hours.
You can occasionally snack on low-calorie raw fruit and vegetables during the day, but try to limit protein as much as possible until the feast.
Exercise during the day, in a fasted state.
Who should try it?
People who have trouble sticking to a stricter fast will do better on the OMAD, as it allows light eating during the time leading up to the feast, but I wonder if you’d be squandering some of the benefits by eating.
Alternate Day Fasting
Researchers often use this method in lab studies:
Eat normally one day (last meal at, say, 9 PM Monday).
Don’t eat the next day.
Resume eating the day after that (at, say, 9 AM Wednesday).
It works out to a 36-ish hour fast, although there’s plenty of wiggle room. You could eat at 10 PM Monday and break the fast at 6 AM Wednesday for a “mere” 32 hour fast.
Who should try it?
People who have no trouble going to bed hungry. With other intermittent fasting methods, you can always manage to get to bed with a full belly; with ADF, you will be going to bed on an empty stomach several times a week. That can be tough.
That said, the therapeutic benefits to serious conditions will most likely really be pronounced with this way of fasting. The casual 20-something Primal eater who lifts heavy things and enjoys going out with friends? Probably not ideal. The older Primal eater interested in generating some autophagy and maybe staving off neurodegeneration? It might just work out. And while I’m not able to tell a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy what to do, I’d guess that the longer fasts will be more beneficial in that regard, too.
Eat Stop Eat
Put together by Brad Pilon, Eat Stop Eat is really basic:
Once or twice a week, don’t eat for 24 hours.
Start your fast in the morning, at lunch, or at dinner. It doesn’t matter as long as you don’t eat for 24 hours.
Break your fast with a “normal-sized meal.” Don’t try to make up for the lost calories by feasting.
Exercise regularly.
Who should try it?
People interesting in fasting for the therapeutic benefits (cancer protection, autophagy, life extension, etc.) would probably get a lot out of this method, as opposed to people interested in the body composition benefits.
Going a full 24 hours without food is a much tougher slog than going for 16 hours. In my experience, going lower-carb and higher-fat makes longer fasts easier, so I’d have to say a low-carb Primal eater would do better than most.
But my personal favorite way of implementing fasting?
WHEN — When Hunger Ensues Naturally
I’m not going to put any bullet points here, because none are required. Instead, I’ll give a few scenarios:
I wake up bright and early on a Saturday morning. It’s about 65 degrees, the sun’s out, my dog is walking around with the leash in his mouth, and Red Rock Canyon is kinda calling my name. I’ve got my coffee already and I’m actually not all that hungry from dinner. You know what? I’ll go on that hike, skip breakfast, and really work up an appetite for lunch. Or not. If I’m hungry afterwards, I’ll eat. It’s a fast, but not really.
I hit the gym, put in a light workout, then swing by the beach for some sand sprints. I’m toast by the end and have to stagger back to my car, but I’m not hungry. Even when I get home and smell the grilled salmon, I have no desire for it. I might eat later that night, but only if my appetite returns. I’m fasting post-workout only because it doesn’t occur to me to eat, not because I’m following a plan.
I’m away on business, stuck on a layover that’s turned into a delay that’s turned into an overnighter. The only food available is a Kudos candy bar – I mean, healthy granola bar (they seriously still make these?) from the mini fridge, a greasy pizza joint on the corner across the street from the hotel, a Chinese takeout place next to the pizza joint, and a slew of fast food restaurants some ways down the road. It’s late, I’m tired, I had a Big Ass Salad before I left for LAX… you know what? I’m just going to skip the “meal.” I’ll figure out something at the airport in the morning (20 hour fast) or once I land (24 hour fast). And I’ll be okay either way.
That’s eating When Hunger Ensues Naturally.
This is the most natural, most effortless way of “fasting,” at least for me, because it allows a person to eat intuitively. Although most people will eventually acclimate to more regimented fasting schedules, and many may even need and thrive with that structure, I prefer a more fractal, loose, random pattern of “missing” (in quotations because I don’t feel like I’m missing anything, and that’s the whole point!) meals. I have no data on whether it’s as effective or more effective than the more popular methods, but I do know that I’ll often fast for 16 hours and eat for eight, or skip an entire day of eating, or sometimes (but very, very rarely) even approach a full 30 hours, and it seems likely that this random pattern of eating characterized the eating “schedules” of our ancestors.
In short, we’re all doing the same thing, chasing the same goals. We’re all skipping meals, reducing calories, staying active, and all the while we’re doing this without feeling miserable and restricted. "Fit Feature: Katie Kates" - By MikeCon Photography
Here's my second fitness feature.  It's the Musclemania Fitness Pro Katie Kates.  Read her incredible story and see how this "Fit Mom" does it all.  At first she was hesitant about doing a photo shoot, however she took the leap and I loved working with her.  She and her husband Nick are hilarious!  I love to laugh and joke on photo shoots, and these two kept me in stitches with the banter between them!  Once you read her interview, you'll see exactly what I mean...I'm loving all of her responses!!!
Q: Describe your life before you started training.
A:  My diet consisted of xing teas, pepsi, and any and all junk food.  I’ve always been really active and would still go hiking, dirt biking, wake boarding, or rollerblading but I did those things for fun and only actually worked out 1-2 times per week.  Those workout sessions consisted of WAY too much cardio and light lifting with a lot of reps.  I had very low self-esteem and was always focusing on being smaller. 
Q:  How different do you feel now compared to then?
A:  I wouldn’t change who I am now.  I love lifting and it’s truly a passionate hobby of mine now.  While it makes me look good, I primarily train for the mental factor.  It is my form of stress release and is always the cure for my bad moods.  I’m not only confident now, I’m comfortable in my skin which is so much more important to me.  My hope is that exuding confidence will make a positive impact on how my daughter will eventually see herself and perhaps not struggle as I did at a younger age.
  Q: Was there is pivotal moment that motivated you to start training? If so, what was it?
A:  I started working out after my daughter was born. I was 20 years old.  Originally, it began with just trying to get back to pre-baby body (which wasn’t anything great to begin with).  This means, I did countless hours of cardio.  I would go for 3 mile runs daily and sometimes more if I could push myself. I’ve never been a great runner so I struggled with anything over 3 miles.  I did eventually work my way up to a half marathon but I’ll NEVER do that again.  My legs hurt for a week afterwards.  I also started to develop issues with my shins that made running more difficult.  It was at that time that I started to get more serious into lifting.  With running being more difficult I started lifting 3 days a week.  Once I started I was hooked. 
Q:  Do you remember your first training session? How different is your training today?
A:  I’ve been lifting for quite some time although never seriously until my 20’s.  I would go lift at the gym with my mom as early as 15 years old, and also took weight training in high school.  I’ve always loved being strong “for a girl” but never really focused on making myself any stronger.  Again, my goals physically were to always be as small as possible.  That said, my weight training consisted primarily of low weight with a lot of reps and cardio.  Now, I focus on strength and muscle growth and the only cardio I do is either while I’m prepping for a show or things that I happen to do for fun such as, rollerblading or hiking.  My training sessions are vastly different.  I love to focus on strength sets which is lifting 90% of my max weight for 5 sets of 5 reps.  That said, your body always needs change so I will also rotate in more hypertrophy weeks where I’ll lift 80% of my max weight for 4 sets of 10-12 reps. 
Q:  What has been the most rewarding aspect of training for you?  Why?
A:  The most rewarding aspect of training is the psycho-social impact it had on me.  I’m more confident and all around happier.  I also have a better relationship with food than I ever have.  I know see food as fuel and not as the enemy which I felt for so many years. 
Q: What has continued to motivate you throughout your training?  Why?  
A:  Stress relief is my primary motivator for why I continue to train.  Looking good and feeling good are just an added bonus.  Additionally, in 2014 I began competing in bodybuilding competitions.  
Q:  What have you had to overcome to get to where you are today?  Did that change you in any way?  If so, describe how.
A:  I wouldn’t say that I’ve encountered barriers that kept me from succeeding.  I’m an Aries and as such have the tendency to be very goal oriented and driven.  When I set my mind to something I make it happen. The only opposition I face rather consistently is the lack of support from my parents who don’t approve of my lifting routines and or bodybuilding competitions.  But I do those things for myself and at this point in my life, my happiness became more important than their approval. I routinely get comments regarding, “you’re going to injure yourself, why do you want to get bigger, and couldn’t you be spending your time doing other things?”  I have my opinions and they are more than welcome to theirs but it will not deter my decision. 
Q:  What is the number one lesson you have learned about health and fitness through your training?
A:  Food is fuel!!!! Like so many women I was convinced that you had to starve yourself to get the body you wanted.  That food was the #1 enemy and I needed to follow up my meals with intense sessions of cardio. Now, I use food to fuel my workouts and build muscle.  I actually struggle to consume the sheer amount of food that I need in order to accomplish those things. I’m bulking now and am consuming upwards of 2400 calories per day with meals scheduled as frequently as every 3 hours. 
Q:  What do you wish you had known when you were 16?
A:  That I’d get a bigger bang for my buck lifting heavy than doing cardio! LOL!  I wasted so much time!  
Q:  Do you have a quote that you live by? If so, why this one?  
A:  Go big or go home along with anything worth doing is worth doing right.  These two kind of go hand in hand I think.  If you’re going to put effort into something, put forth all of your effort, never do things half assed!!
Q:  What was your reason for taking health and fitness to the level you have? Why is it so important to you?
A:  Sanity. I have a rather stressful full time job and balancing that with being a mom, a student (I’m currently in school to get my bachelors), wife, friend, competitor and coach can be hectic.  I can’t complain because I did it to myself but there is a level of stress that comes with all of that and training is my avenue for relieving stress. 
Q:  What advice would you give to women wanting to get into the best shape of their life?
A:  Lift heavy and stop doing so much cardio.  Every body is different and I do think that cardio has its merits for cardiovascular health and can be an important tool for people that carry extra body fat.  That said, lifting heavy will burn fat more efficiently and you’ll see results more quickly which in turn will give you motivation to keep going which can be really difficult when you first begin training. 
Q:  What is the most important thing women need to remember when training?  Why?  
A:  Same as above, along with using food to fuel your workouts.  You HAVE to eat to lose fat, and to build muscle.  Don’t starve yourself! It is actually more detrimental to starve yourself in multiple ways. 
Q:  We all have days where motivation is low – how do you overcome these? Have you always been able to do this?
A:  Sometimes it’s a matter of telling myself, “get it done and you’ll feel better when you get done.” Other times, I simply take a rest day.  Your body needs to take rest days in order to recover and build muscle. If you’re constantly tearing it down and not allowing it time to rebuild, all of your lifting could mean nothing.  That said, I have 1-2 rest days built into my routine but I take them when my body needs them and it varies from week to week.  If I don’t have the motivation one day, I’ll simply have a rest day and come back the next day ready to go. You have to find that level of balance in your life or you can risk burning yourself out. 
Q:  Do you enjoy training alone or with a partner?  Why?
A:  I train better alone. I’m an introvert which means I get my energy from being alone.  I’m the furthest thing from a social butterfly.  I like to put on my headphones, blast rock music and get to down to business.  Partners can be a great motivator but I push myself harder when I’m alone without any distractions.  
Q:  What would you like to see change in the health and fitness industry?
A:  Fit people advertising supplements or workout regimens that they don’t use or don’t know work.  Example, Fit Tea….I don’t think I need to expound on that one.  Also, as I’ve mentioned several times, stop telling women they need to do hours upon hours of cardio!!
Q:  What would a perfect Sunday involve for you?
A:  Spending the day at the lake with my family or out dirt biking.  Anything and everything BUT “adulting.”  My characteristically scheduled and controlling self would like to negotiate this be the perfect Saturday though….or Sunday knowing Monday I’ll be off of work... LOL, Because I NEED one day to get ready for the work week or my life is a mess.  I have to have order and structure in my life! LOL!
Q:  Contest history - do you have a highlight? Why?
A:  I started competing in 2014.  My first show was in NPC and I was NOT ready but everyone has to start somewhere right?  I came in 7th place in figure…Yikes! BUT, I did get on that stage and that was my first step.  I then spent the next 3 years putting on more muscle. I then competed again in 2017 at the Colorado Musclemania Rocky Mountain where I placed first and overall in figure.  That started the fire that kept me going.  I went on to compete in the October Colorado Musclemania Championships where I came in 1st and overall in figure and obtained my Pro status.  The highlight will be this November where I will be competing in 2 shows.  The first will be the local Colorado Musclemania Championships where I’ll be competing for the first time in the women’s physique category.  The second, will be 2 weeks following in Vegas at World’s where I will make my Pro debut in Figure.  AHHHHH SO EXCITED!!
Q:  Tell everyone about your diet:
A:  Because I work Monday-Friday, I meal prep on Sunday’s which mean majority of my meals are boring and redundant.  I get my variation for dinners and also on the weekends.  It’s a blessing in disguise to have to eat this way.  I always aim to drink at least 1 gallon of water a day.   Below is an example of what my current diet looks like while bulking. 7 AM - I love the Jimmy Dean Light breakfast bowls.  Their fast, convenient, and taste great. 10 AM -  4 oz. of chicken, ½ cup of rice or pasta, 1 cup of veggies 1 PM -  4 oz. of chicken, ½ cup of rice or pasta, 1 cup of veggies 530- Protein shake with a carb of some sort or a protein bar 7- Dinner (whatever I feel like making that day) consisting of some form of protein, carb, and vegetable with a glass of red wine or on really hectic days scotch on the rocks.  
Workout week Monday – rest or abs Tuesday – Lower hypertrophy day-quad focus Wednesday – Pull hypertrophy day Thursday- Lower hypertrophy day-glute focus Friday –Push hypertrophy day Saturday- Heavy lower day Sunday – Heavy upper day

Alcohol is my weakness.  Eating healthy isn’t the hard part for me, its alcohol consumption.  During bulk or off season I will have 1 alcoholic drink a day.  What is your favorite non-cheat food?  I think the word cheat depends on the diet structure for the person.  In my world of flexible dieting, pasta is a non-cheat food so I would have to go with that.  What is your favorite home-cooked meal? Who cooks it?  Tamales!  My mom and I will get together and make a big batch of tamales almost every year.  What are the staples in your fridge?  Eggs, prepped chicken, prepped veggies, prepped rice/pasta. What is your favorite body part to train?  Why? Hands down, Legs! What is your least favorite body part to train?  Why? Biceps or abs.  They're just not my strong suit, but it has to happen. Do you prefer to train outdoors or indoors?  Why?  Indoors- too hot for me to focus outside which effects my endurance and ability to push harder.  Describe the atmosphere in your favorite place to train – what can you see/feel/hear etc.?  I’m attached to my gym.  It’s a locally owned AnyTime Fitness in Castle Rock and it feels like home.  It’s usually not too hectic and I can always get the equipment that I need for my workouts.  Its low key and I can put my headphones in and just lift.  People are primarily there to work out so I don’t have a lot of people interrupt me to chat which I prefer.   Do you prefer cardio or weights?  Why?  LOL!!!  WEIGHTS!  What is this cardio you speak of? ;)  Do you have a favorite book? Why this one?  Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson…It’s hilarious! What is your favorite feature?  Why?  Eyes or legs.  I have big eyes.  My boss once told me, “Your eyes are so big and with short hair like you have, your facial expressions are very noticeable.”  Mind you, she was saying this while telling me I needed to work on controlling my facial expressions in meetings!!  LOL!!  I can’t help what my face does when people talk!  Got to work what you got though   My legs are strong and I’m proud of the muscle in them.  Name five (5) things you can't live without:  Attention!!  HAHA My husband and my daughter understand this.  I’m the weirdest introvert.  I want to be left alone by most people but I want my family to pay attention to me all the time!  LOL.  Okay, actual things: My airpod headphones Chucks Wine Coffee Does sarcasm count? haha!! Name three (3) things most people don’t know about you: I love to dirt bike I’m legally deaf in my right ear I’m have a very real and inexplicable fear of moths…go ahead, laugh, my 8 year old daughter does.  I’m not crying, you’re crying!!  Also, I’m still afraid of the dark LOL!  I very obviously shouldn’t be a mother but here I am! haha What is on your bedside table? A salt lamp, chapstick and my glasses.  I’m quite the piece of work.  Not only am I afraid of the dark, I’m blind without my glass and when I turn on the light to find them, it attracts moths and I nearly die.   What is your best beauty secret?  People are afraid of people without eyebrows…my secret is too always have my eyebrows on.  LOL!  My eyebrows seriously don’t grow so I have to legitimately paint them on in the morning.  God my husband is a lucky man! HAHAHA Aside from that, I never sleep with makeup on my face…I guess that’s a secret?  Sorry Mike, I’m really bad at these.  <It's okay Katie...you're doing fine!>  
Who inspires you?  Why?  People who are unapologetically themselves.  People who don’t care what others think of them, who say what they feel, stand up for what they believe and kick ass along the way. Those are my kind of people!   Who is your fitness and body role model? Why?  I have so many!  I follow a lot of very inspiring and bad ass women on Instagram.  They make me want to try harder and be better. I’ve also am a huge fan of our local Norma Jean Watkins.  She’s a mini bad ass and I love her. Hey girl, heeeey!!!!   What do you have in store for the future? What do you want to improve on?  I was asking myself this question earlier this week and quite frankly, I don’t know.  I have my goals set for this year but who knows what next year will hold and what will shape those goals.  As for this year, I’ve got a clear plan in place and nothing’s going to stop me.   I'm currently preparing for: Musclemania Colorado Championships on November 4th AND Fitness America Weekend in Las Vegas on November 17th-18th.
