Linumi:

Bumi is the werewolf (big hairy man lol.) and Lin's the hunter. I feel like this is the most obvious.

At first I was gonna go with Lin as a mermaid, but then I remembered that Bumi was a literal naval commander and also merman! Bumi is a fucking vibe. He'd slay.

Lin is the least whimsical witch you will ever meet and Bumi is the familiar. What animal can he shapeshift into I wonder?

Barista Bumi. Idk why but I feel like this man can make amazing coffee. I can see it in his forearms. Lin is a canon coffee addict in my heart.

Like with the mermaid one, I at first was gonna have Lin as the teacher but I found the idea of cool guy professor Bumi and really strict TA Lin really endearing

Bumi is the Knight and Lin is the surprisingly competent princess. But i also love the idea of rugged knight Lin and soft Avatar's son Bumi. So like. I can go either way.

I can certainly see Bumi as a writer for some reason? Like he tells stories a lot, I think he'd be a decent writer. Lin being his editor would be really funny because I can imagine that Bumi just word vomits onto a page.

Oooh werewolf Kya! As a waterbender, she already has a connection with a moon, it's perfect. I think Lin would look cool with like, a Dawnguard style crossbow.

I mean. Kya feels more mermaid-y. Water connections and all. Also She's just so damn whimsical.

Tenzin as a gentle as fuck werewolf. Pema is ready to get rawdogged by a monster with a huge knot but Tenzin is too much of a sweetheart.

Tenzin would probably be a mermaid and Pema is the overly excitable fisherwoman who caught him and keeps him in a bathtub. (I just feel like Pema would be a monsterfucker. I feel it)

Mermaid Kuvira actually. I know Korra being a waterbender should be more mermaidy, but like. Deep sea mermaid Kuvira lives in my head forever.

unrelated to tot question, how did willow even get into hexside? Her dads canonically went to different schools (in Thems the breaks kids) and I may be misremembering this but pretty sure odalia said something like “we’ll make sure the girl never gets admitted into hexside.��

The only solution I can think of right now is Bump supremacy

Odalia did say that but it was a conditional threat. She would only become an obstacle in Willow attending Hexside if Amity didn't do as told and break off their friendship. She did so Odalia stopped paying any attention to Willow.

Gilbert and Harvey went to St. Epiderm and Glandus respectively but from what we know about both schools, it's not unlikely that they'd opt to send her somewhere else.

As stated by Raine, St Epiderm was both pricey (They could only attend on a scholarship.) and not in an ideal location (Their parents had to live by the Knee in order for them to attend and didn't like how cold it was.)

I don't know the details of the Parks' living situation. They're certainly not poor but they're not nearly as well off as the Blights. (Who also chose to send their kids to Hexside, implying it must be a school with a good reputation.) Plus idk if the Parks lived in Bonesborough all along or if they moved there for the sake of Willow's education but if it's the former, having to migrate to the Knee/sending their daughter to school so far from home would not have been the convenient option.

While Epiderm might have been a consideration when Gilbert and Harvey were deciding Willow's future school, I imagine Glandus was simply out of the question from the beginning. Harvey attended himself so he would well aware of the social hierarchy there. It was established in TTLGR that Glandus students have a dog-eat-dog mentality. The strong are expected to push down the weak.

Considering what a shy, sensitive, insecure, clumsy, magically challenged little girl Willow was, Harvey knew she'd be bullied relentlessly if they sent her there. And the Parks definitely give off the impression that they're very protective of their child and most likely don't believe in the idea that being put in that kind of situation will help her in the long run.

(Obviously she ended up getting bullied at Hexside too but neither Harvey or Gilbert were familiar enough with the school to know that.)

As for how Willow got admitted into Hexside at all, yeah. It was absolutely Bump.

It's mentioned by Amity that in order to pass the Hexside entrance exam, you need to be able to cast at least two spells. I always saw this as just a formality to prove the child has a functioning bile sac, rather than an expectation for the child to be already talented before they even start school. So like, even if they're bad at magic, they have the potential to improve. This was Bump's mentality, I believe. Principle Faust probably had higher standards for the former exam but I figure Bump definitely changed a lot once he became principle, namely that every student have the opportunity to learn and excel even if they're not immediately perfect.

(Bump most likely had his faults tho. Ableism seemed pretty normalized on the Boiling Isles when it came to witches who couldn't do magic. So like. A kid like Hunter would probably have been turned away if he tried to enroll in season 1. Although Luz being a human and proving she could do magic in an alternative way definitely opened Bump's mind a bit. So from this point, I imagine he'd be more lenient in allowing students who aren't biological witches.)

So like. Willow could, at the very least, cast a plant based spell. Maybe something simple too, like a light spell (Amity once said disparagingly, that a light spell was something even a child could do.)

So I definitely see it as Willow just barely scraping by. She managed two spells, though she could only do one of them well. But Bump probably wouldn't turn away any witch kid with magical potential unless he could not see a single feasible way for them to improve at Hexside. (eg. a kid with no magical ability whatsoever.)

The same as last episode's reaction, I notes everything down at the time it was happening so these are my literal first reactions to each news

Hunter and Alador (I keep forgetting that's his name) fighting is 10/10, its just 2 grumpy tired nerds fighting

BUT I ALMOST CRIED! I am famous for not crying at shows, BUT THIS ALMOST GOT ME. Thinking about King's words "So happy I had you as a big sister" STILL gets me to teary stage. DAMN

THAT WAS SO GOOD, BUT AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I will definitely post a more... cohesive and easier to understand post in actual sentences and not just screams BUT this is my honest true reactions

Again, I thank you to the people who have followed me through, it motivated me to keep updating? Which is great because WHEN I rewatch this, I am excited to go through these notes and go "AWW", so whilst I am unable to rewatch this show again for the first time, I CAN see how I reacted, which I think is quite nice, don't you?

Now we got the feelings out of the way, ONTO SEASON 3 EVERYONE! The final stretch of our (virtual) adventure!

I really need to start sharing my weird ass TOH au I have

It’s a very l o o s e The Last Of Us x The Owl House AU in basics like

Emperors Coven is now a Branch off of the Fireflies with completely f’d goals (thanks belos).

Belos wants to use the Cordyceps fungus to further “human evolution” (man is committing multiple crimes in human experimentation) and has some how made it WORSE

The emperors coven is known as the “Torchlights” (creative I know right/s) And now our coven heads (+Camilla) are now Head Scientists/Doctors/Security

Camilla is part of the Torchlights because of Luz, similar to Ellie she is immune and Belos said to Camilla that he’ll let her live as long as Camilla does what she’s told. She works with any animals based subjects (since she is a vet in canon)

Luz’s story line with Eda and the others is her canon development mashed with Ellie and Joel’s. She escapes the Torchlight facility and Meets Eda and who is traveling West to the primary Torchlight facility at the invite of Raine Whispers (They are requesting her assistance to actually retrieve Luz to get Camilla and her out of there before Them, Darius and Eber enact their take down of the Torchlights, They where shocked to see that Eda had already had her with her. Saves the trip back I guess)

Lilith, Willow, Gus, and Amity are all residents in a safe zone similar to the one Tommy had going. Lilith is an ex-torch light here, cause of it her and Eda’s relationship is strained.

Eda isn’t cursed here but she was thrown into testing cause of Lilith, and she was lucky to get out unscathed. That and she may have left eda to literally die multiple times via hordes of infected.

Lilith doesn’t join the travel party till later. Willow, Gus and Amity jump at the opportunity to get out of the safe zone, having all spent their entire lives in it. Amity and Luz still have that beginning conflict, but hand to hand combat. Amity is like convinced this girl is gonna dies, she can’t fight, she can’t barely shoot. Amity wins their scuffle and it goes pretty similar to canons but it’s more of “you’ll never make it out there. Admit it” and “I wouldn’t, but I’m still gonna try.”

Gus is a stealth master STRAIGHT UP. This man could sneak by infected no problem (and people too) he’s a melee master, shank central.

Willow has learned as much medical know how as she can, one of her dads being one of the medics for the safe zone. She uses her knowledge of nature to her advantage. She can think of 50 ways to poison you with local fauna, or she can literally surplex you cause buff willow supremacy. She knows her way around a gun when needed. She takes up Teaching Luz how to shoot with just a hand gun cause eda only has a shot gun and rifle and it wasn’t going well.

Amity.. Amity is definitely interesting in this AU. She’s definitely smart and sharp as a tack, and a skilled sharp shooter but she definitely prefers a bow and arrow. Hunting professional (Ed and Emira Taught her) despite her age she’s part of the hunting parties and stuff and is seen as a very established citizen with her family. Odalia and Edric are basically the same, they where high class before all this went down and Odalia is still trying to be. Alador is still building things, straight up an engineer. Amity and willows situation is still pretty much the same.

Hunter,, my poor boy. He’s still a clone by technicality. He’s technically Evelyn and Caleb’s kid.. but like he’s made from “genetic material” belos has frozen and uses to basically keep making these ‘kids’. Hunter is like the 12th one to happen. Is the oldest one. (Most never lived past 3 and usually their where 2 or 3 at a time. But Hunter is an only kid atm.) he’s still 16 here. A literal walking experiment, he is immune like Luz but holds a altered strain connected to one belos has placed in himself and allows him to basically fuck with his mind. (And control it if needed but it’d nearly kill hunter.) He was basically a child soldier until the Hexsquad basically snatched his ass and he had to choose between being mauled by clicker or joining this weird found family. He’s secretly a NERD.

Flapjack, Hooty and King are here as HUMANS. Hooty is this weird lanky dude that travels with eda until they get to the safe zone, he stays with Lilith until they meet back up later. Flapjack was a doctor that was close with Caleb and Evelyn! And has been keeping close tabs on hunter. Came looking for him when he went missing, becoming yet another me member of the strange group. King is a little kid Eda found and has been raising as her own!

I have so much but it’s a whole lot and I’d love to see if y’all would wanna see content of this!

Do all nightfolk share a religion? Are there any religions that are "false", or are there any gods nobody believes in? Does their popularity affect them?

there's no one overarching religion; there's many, many, and all are centered around the outer gods with few minor. there are a near countless amount of gods that have either been forgotten (both hydre and nocturne fall into this category) or 'killed' by other gods, fate-touched heroes, eaten by the worldeater or the thousand-head hydra. nightfolk tend to believe in their own gods, but there are some who believe in others outside of them - abrahamic gods, japanese spirits, african gods and spirits, native american, etc; there's always cultural mixing, of course! - though this is a much, much rarer occurrance and it's not so much about belief as it is that nightfolk gods are, well, nightfolk gods.

they don't really...name? their religions? they name everything else though. but, for example, nightfolk who worship sanguinach the bloodweaver are called sanguinarians (clerics from certain healing houses are also commonly referred to as bloodweavers). nightfolk who worship mausza and the sightless eye are referred to as oracles or fateweavers colloquially, even though both titles are specific to the upper ranks of their clergy. worshippers of spira thornis are simply referred to as thornisians or thornisian hexbreakers (which is a bit redundant since spira thornis is the hexbreaker; nightfolk legitimately do not care). anyone involved with artyr myrdin is referred to as a member of the 'circle'. followers of the face-eater are either hunters, shifters, or weres, and don't call themselves by any special names.

now, i'll say this: if you've noticed, in all my character bios, effectively all my muses hate sanguinarians. they're largely zealots, tend to believe explicitly in vampire supremacy as sanguinach and the nightfather intended, are extremely violent, lots of terrorism and human sacrifice going on there, orgies - it's all very culty. there are regular people who happen to worship sanguinach but are primarily and strictly healers, separating religion from practice and are, y'know, normies about things (some people do adhere to their oaths).

i got off track--

as far as popularity goes - yes and no. it's not so much about popularity or anything like that, but purpose and results. most adherents get some kind of blessing or curse, depending on denomination - but because there are tangible results to their efforts and tenets, rewards even, it's much easier for them to choose who to worship and commit. of course, often times, that's what grandma and dad were, may as well be too - kind of a lot of that actually. some indoctrination, brainwashing even. no one's hands are clean. most try to pick the lesser evil because there aren't really any good options for them, in terms of religion. worshipping the face-eater sounds nice until you (seemingly) randomly fly into a monstrous rage, hunting and killing anything in your path. worshipping sanguinach sounds cool until you're releasing a herd of blackwyrms into a crowd and watching as children get torn to shreds, mhmm. worshipping mausza and the sightless eye's all starry and aesthetic, until you are quite literally silenced, spiritually shackled, and forced to fulfill their wills or risk watching everything and everyone you ever loved die in some fashion.

they're all generally high risk, high reward types, the main six outer gods? yep. most certainly once mages, all of them. absolute pains in the ass-

well, wait. so the whole outer gods thing is in itself a religion, i suppose. i guess there is sort of a framework there, it's kind of like mmm s.kyrim, now that i think on it.

Critical Reread - ACOTAR Chapter 2

Join me on a reread of A Court of Thorns and Roses

Chapter 2

F/eyre feeds her family.

“Mortals didn’t possess magic—didn’t possess any of the superior strength and speed of the faeries or High Fae.”

It'd be a lot more interesting if the humans in this world possessed something the Fae do not. The Fae Supremacy in this series is out of control.

“But then again, my mother hadn’t made them swear anything when they stood beside her deathbed.”

I really wish we got any kind of reasoning for this at all. Especially since F/eyre says she was the most distant from her mother. Could have been an interesting scene to have her ask Papa Archeron at some point.

“Elain sometimes just … didn’t grasp things.”

I am so curious about Elain's POV, though it's entirely possible that her attitude during the cabin years won't come up at all.

“No, she just spent whatever money I didn’t hide from her, and rarely bothered to acknowledge my father’s limping presence at all.”

Bad look for my girl, Nesta.

“Some days, I couldn’t tell which of us was the most wretched and bitter.”

As much as Nesta is awful during this time, it's nice to see that F/eyre deeply understands the bitterness Nesta feels. And it's also a hint that F/eyre can be unpleasant too.

“No one bothered to confirm they’d heard me, anyway.”

I always wonder how much of this part is written for a book where Nesta and Elain don't get a bigger part down the road. There are hints of goodness in them, but it's just so bleak and hard to come back from.

“and that Nesta was sometimes prone to leaving far out of his reach.”

“He just let me walk into those deadly, eerie woods that even the most seasoned hunters were wary of.”

HE LET HER HUNT. HER DAD. WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE PROVIDER.

“I glanced at Nesta’s still-shiny pair by the door. Beside hers, my too-small boots were falling apart at the seams, held together only by fraying laces.”

SJM is doing the most to make sure we feel bad for F/eyre, but she's totally in control of their money. If they have new stuff and F/eyre doesn't, that's because she chose to sacrifice her own needs for her family.

“You stink like a pig covered in its own filth. Can’t you at least try to pretend that you’re not an ignorant peasant?”

OMG Nesta.

“she didn’t have time to do anything with me at all save contemplate how my budding abilities to sketch and paint might secure me a future husband.”

Why in the world would this woman charge her with taking care of the family if she only recognized her artistic abilities?

It makes even less sense that she had her make this promise before they lost their wealth. Why would the feral youngest child be in any position to protect her high society family?

I do wonder if the promise is even necessary. F/eyre has enough motivation with not wanting her family to die, even if they are awful to her. And by this point she isn't trying to keep them together, she's trying to marry her sisters off. And there isn't any kind of pay off where we get to explore F/eyre's relationship with her mother.

I feel like this is the closest we get to F/eyre also being "wretched" as she previously states.

The Owl House Finale: my thoughts

! spoilers, obviously !

I thought it was alright.

Which is pretty sad considering how freaking good the show was.

Now it's difficult to make a list of things I liked and things I didn't like and you will see why.

But for tradition's sake:

things I liked

the overall idea of it with Belos taking over the titan's corpse and all that, pretty dang awesome

not making the Collector an actual villain and instead showing how they're really just a child lashing out because he doesn't know how to deal with these complex emotions

the amount of lore we got on the Collector and titan magic

the ending/post-credit scene, seeing everyone happy and healing without it being a super cliché "and suddenly everything's okay" thing was cool, the character designs were on fucking point and I especially liked the scene with Hunter and Willow at Flapjack's gravestone

Raine being an absolute BAMF, I love them and they fucking rule

Hunter and Darius reuniting, short but sweet

on that note: Darius and Alador in the credits?? hello, sassy middle-aged dads having a thing™??? love to see it

Raine and Eda reuniting, just these two, man

King's genderqueer/genderfucked/whatever parent? marvellous

Luz and Amity getting their happy ending without some random, annoying pseudo break-up plot point or something thrown in there

now, things I didn't like

The pacing was fucking atrocious and really dims all the other aspects I liked, just scene after scene after scene.

In a big character-driven finale like this it's vital to give the emotional impact time to develop, to let it breathe, let the audience sit with a hard-hitting scene like when Luz 'dies' going up against Belos.

And this obviously isn't Dana's or any of the team's fault, it's clearly because of the mouse and the way it disrespects and seems to straight up despise its own creators.

Especially for a show like this where we get the most amount of openly shown queer affection in the final minutes of the final episode of a show that was cut short for "not fitting the brand". Of course Owl House is revolutionary in its portrayal of queerness in a Disney show but the shadow of the mouse looms large and can be felt even here which is just, it's tragic, man, seriously.

The pacing is also what causes my other big problem with the finale: the hollow victory.

Well of course Luz has defeated Belos at the end, has liberated the BI, healing can take place, rebuilding can start.

But it feels hollow. Of course Luz epically destroys Coloniser McGoo and seeing Raine, Eda and King stomp on him was funny. But I feel there was a distinct lack of catharsis here.

Now this might be because from the beginning of this show I've been firmly in camp villain-enjoyer and was really excited about how they were gonna develop Belos as a villain but I didn't like the lack of "depth" regarding him we got in the finale.

Now I'm not talking about the Philip Wittebane sob story or the power of love, friendship and redemption or anything, puritan fascist man can rot in fucking hell forever, but it feels like Luz didn't actually defeat him.

Belos went from representing a larger system of beliefs about the world (human supremacy, colonisation, religious dogma, the absolutely batshit ideas underlying the concept of killing and then resurrecting your own brother "for his own good", etc.) to just like big kaiju slime wreaking havoc and spitting magic fire.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good epic fight against just a huge gross monster that wants to destroy the world (which yes, Belos ultimately is) but not when that happens at the cost of your villain's complexity.

Because now Luz has destroyed this huge evil slime thing, but that could've been any other villain or monster, it lacks that narrative oomph of defeating Belos as a character who represents bigotry, intense selfishness, abuse and ultimately a worldview in which some people are destined for annihilation due to their perceived inferiority.

This is because, at least in my opinion, Belos' strength as a villainous character isn't his magic or anything like that, it is his prowess in manipulation and the way he can make other characters believe that his depraved views are correct. I much rather would've liked that Luz and him had had a verbal standoff before actually fighting, him preying on her fears of being just like him and having those resolved together with his defeat instead of being seemingly resolved in that Collector dream sequence at the beginning.

Because it now seems like Luz' emotional arc is divorced from her fight against the main villain of this whole show which to me feels very unsatisfactory. A villain or obstacle is what drives the narrative, it's what provokes the protagonist(s) into action and especially Luz and Belos had this well-written dynamic with both being humans but extremely different from each other, yet Luz feeling terrible because she helped Philip discover the light glyph. That was cool, that was interesting and removing that element feels kind of boring to me.

It makes it feel like Belos and the system he represents were never really defeated, like Philip Wittebane is dead as he should be but the concept of "Belos" lives on, which could've been interesting if properly developed, but then again there wasn't enough time to do that.

Ultimately I feel it's on a surface level a pretty decent finale for a series like this, it hit all the right beats and tied this amazing show up as best as it could.

On the other hand I personally feel that it was hindered from being a finale this awesome show truly deserves by the mouse. Imagine how good it could've been if it had the time to develop the plot at a slower pace, if the show could've taken its time to develop the lore and the emotional beats of the story instead of giving last-minute exposition dumps and trying to fit all its eggs in one basket over the course of a measly 45 minutes.

It was good, but it could've been great, and that's just tragic.

I'm looking forward to any future projects by Dana Terrace because her and the team are truly brilliant artists and I hope their next projects will work out without all this corporate meddling.

Finally I want to say that obviously this was all just my opinion, I'm not pretending to speak the ultimate gospel truth and if you loved the finale that's cool, if you hated it that's also cool, you can have whatever opinion you like. This wasn't some sort of essay to convince anyone of my position, it was just me rambling about a show I like and maybe over time my opinions will change, this show is by no means a hill I'm willing to die on.

I've got a midnight thought.....

Modern!Quaritch as the poacher, hunting only for the "sport interest". The house is full of trophies, and storage is full of knives and guns.

Spider is taught to skin deers and rabbits since childhood, but always was aware of father's strong interest in sensless murders. Former ranger Jake Sully also is against Quaritch's hobby. And he would call the police, if not the Spider's pleads to let his harmless dad to do his harmless dad's things.

(And it's not like Spider ever chose his own father over Jake Sully, just family matters and so on)

Among the trophies Quaritch has a present from his old friend: a tiger's skin, too grotesque for this house, but it's just there. Spider looks at skin and wonders how to make it a metaphor. Quaritch sees it as a rug.

Someone get's shot in the end.

But thank you very much for this midnight thought >:) I have been spinning it in my head since getting it-- and it's honestly uncanny how well Modern!Q fits the mold of trophy hunter. I've been in a house before that had the heads of a dozen different species from Botswana just fucking hanging on the walls, among a bunch of art they brought back from there and other places, and a massive Trump Pence flag. It was a highly unsettling and disturbing moment to say the least and luckily I only had to be there for a few hours-- and they too, also had twelve point bucks and pelts hung among their other taxidermy. Because hunting isn't bad, it's vital, but when it's done without purpose or honor it's absolutely fucked up, especially poaching and trophy hunting done by people like that, travelling thousands of miles and paying thousands of dollars to land a kill on animals they have no right to and then hanging them up beside that massive symbol of white supremacy without a single passing thought to why it's not just bad, it's a cruel type of evil.

BUT but I know this is about Modern!Q poaching in America instead, so back on track (still too easy to imagine him owning a house like the one above and not seeing a problem with it though) but God, yeah, absolutely bunker full of way too many weapons and Quaritch constantly hunting when he doesn't need to and off-season/illegally, going for game that's endangered, too. At the same time the practicality of teaching Spider to hunt and dress game for eating, to skin and probably the tan hides as well. And then Jake, being a former ranger in this verse, yeah he'd totally be against the poaching of course-- but I love that Spider is so tied up in pleading for him not to do a thing about it because Family Matters, Daddy's got his hobby, and Spider being the one to call both his dad harmless and his activities harmless is so interesting because it would pan out like that as he tries to rationalize it all in his head (and rationalize other things if this universe also includes the darker aspects in some capacity). You do get jail time and/or prison time depending on the level of poaching you do (had an uncle get caught for hunting alligators without a license before I was even born, and I know he spent a few months locked up, not to mention all his guns and some property seized) so it would stand that Spider doesn't want to see that happen, and maybe doesn't fully understand the gravity of the effects. He knows there's good hunting where the freezer gets full and they have venison and rabbit, and then there's the stuff Daddy drags home that winds up on the wall, that he burns and hides the carcasses, and does his own taxidermy for, that Dad gets animal hides and horns and bones he's never seen before from his friends just like a certain tiger pelt.

Jake Sully as ranger/former ranger has me 😳 sorry, I'm just thinking about the uniform if he was still a ranger okay listen djdksksk (not me also trying to conjure up Quaritch trying to get goody goody with park ranger Jake Sully in the past so he can pull the wool over his eyes trying to get away with shit) but fuck, I am rambling so nonsensically about this idea, it just has me Thinking. And it would totally end with someone getting shot, and I like to think the tiger rug would be a centerpiece to the whole story, something that came from blood and then blood gets spilt on it again. Who's blood it is? I don't know, but it's someone's and it's fresh.

spn has never had a coherent understanding of class, and generally references surface level “aesthetics” of white american working class masculinity as a proxy instead (lumberjack flannel, steel-toed boots, american-made cars, dean not trusting cops, a passing acknowledgement of childhood poverty that the brothers suffered, their dad being a vet, etc), and even that fades further into the background over time, particularly the cop thing. but with the Men of Letters introduction in S8 they revive that a bit with the MoL vs hunter distinction, except the economic realities of class are absent entirely and only cultural signifiers like education are used as the basis of their conflict.

I’ll have to rewatch all the MoL-focused episodes again to double check, but as far as I remember the most meaningful critique Men of Letters offer about hunters is that they’re just kinda violent? They don’t interrogate the supernatural, they just kill it. But that doesn’t necessarily stem from a moral objection to killing supernatural beings; they’re more so concerned that hunters don’t collect samples or take notes before killing something and therefore “waste” their time tracking the supernatural (I’m thinking in particular of Henry Winchester calling hunters “brutal apes” who “shoot first and ask questions never”). And then with the British MoL in S12, they object to the methodology hunters employ in tracking down & killing the supernatural, arguing that US hunters are “lazy” and don’t do their jobs efficiently enough.

if you then combine this with spn’s premise (it is the moral right of white men to track down and destroy deviance in American society to protect “civilisation” as an exercise of their own masculinity), what you get is an eerily accurate representation of white supremacy’s legacy in academia. the Men of Letters are symbols of white supremacy just as much as hunters are, but they legitimise themselves through the logics of scientific inquiry and the argument that studying the interior of colonial states is an inherently noble pursuit that should be exercised by the state in order to further its own agenda. where conflict arises between these two arms is purely cultural resentment borne out of a right-wing distaste of academia - Men of Letters are effeminate and weak because they do their white supremacy in libraries and labs (domains that are traditionally associated with liberal tolerance and “high class” people) instead of in the streets like real men. none of this conflict is ideological because there is functionally no difference - they are both in service to one another and in fact require each other in order to reproduce themselves. The Men of Letters provide institutional legitimacy to the goal of wiping out the supernatural (read: deviant), which hunters then carry out. Their squabbles are only ever petty in nature because there is little else for them to fight about.

(percy jackson au) percy jackson au? check. “road trip” (technically quest but u get what i mean)? check. enemies to friends to lovers? check. this fic follows the plot of the lightning theif (albeit loosely), but everything is explained enough where you don’t have to read percy jackson to understand what’s going on. basically after moving to the usa, george gets taken to camp halfblood where he learns that a) gods exist. b) he’s the son of poseidon and c) he needs to prove that he didn’t steal zeus’s master bolt.

(royalty/camelot au) my favorite piece of dnf media of all time. dubbed the official dnf camelot au, where dream is the heir to the throne and george is a servants son with a secret that couldp get him killed. these childhood friends grow up together and learn trust, love, and acceptance.
