Winter Weebwatch #2
Alright, Week 2, second episodes, which we are getting to a lot quicker than we got the Week 1 episodes, hence why this post is going out, like, three days after the last one. Hey, maybe by the time we hit Week 3, we’ll be current! That’d be nice.
Several third episodes have already aired, and In/Spectre always seems to be subbed a little late, so we might skip over it for Week 3 and come back for it in Week 4.
Same seven shows as last week, those being Darwin’s Game, Plunderer, ID: Invaded, Pet, In/Spectre, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen and Infinite Dendrogram. Nothing has been dropped or picked up yet, but the season’s still young.
Darwin’s Game
Tumblr media
★☆☆☆☆
Haha, this time I’m reviewing the episode immediately after watching! My memory won’t pull the rug out from under me this time!
So, Darwin’s Game episode two sees … um … sees the guy … whose name begins with a K I think … doing something. Um. Oh! There’s a treasure hunt game with murdery elements on, but … but wait, that happens at the end of the episode? So what happens before that? I think there’s a guy who’s like a boxer with superspeed, and he steals the protagonist’s phone, maybe? But I don’t remember why. I …
God, this show is difficult to review. I swear I just finished watching it, but literally none of it has stuck. It just doesn’t take up any space in my memory, it’s like when you wake up from a dream and you remember it for like six seconds before it starts getting jumbled and confused.
One star again, I guess, because I can’t properly review something that I don’t even have a clear recollection of.
Plunderer
Tumblr media
★☆☆☆☆
Fresh off what might well be the worst first episode of the season, Plunderer proceeds to demonstrate that it could have won me over easily if it hadn’t decided to devote the first twenty minutes of the series to making me hate it.
So, episode two kicks off with a fight scene between the protagonist, Licht, and Skeezy Military Guy, and it’s honestly pretty fun, as is the sequence just afterwards where Licht pretends to be an amoral thief as part of a convoluted gambit to keep the deuteragonist, Hina, from being arrested for possession of an illegal Ballot. There’s even a kind of emotional arc in this episode, of sorts. If I hadn’t seen the first episode, I probably would’ve given this one three stars.
Except I did see the first episode, and the consequences of that still apply. I can’t really ever sympathise with Licht or even enjoy seeing him on screen because the very first thing we ever saw of his character was him committing sexual harassment. Despite what my reviews of Darwin’s Game might suggest, I have a memory longer than that of a goldfish, so no matter what kind of emotional moments or ‘Aw, see, he really is a good person!’ moments the show throws out, it’s not going to matter, because his introduction already soured me to him and, to be honest, to the show entirely.
Anyway, the episode ends with some random background extra revealing that he’s actually a major villain, and I guess Hina is going to track down Licht to warn him or something, and I’ve just emotionally checked out at this point.
Pet.
Tumblr media
★★★☆☆
Pet wins the coveted Most Improved prize this week, as its second episode retells the events of the first episode, but from the perspective of the psychic criminals. This is kind of a great move, as it shows us how these powers work, sets up rules and limitations, clues us into the character dynamic between psychic crime boyfriends Hiroki and Tsukasa, and their boss, the tyrannical and short-tempered but noticeably less powerful Katsuragi.
With this new perspective, events from the first episode are recontextualised, as we see how Hiroki and Tsukasa alter their victim’s memory, and also see how Hiroki is toying with Katsuragi (most noticeably, by making him believe he’s smoking when his cigarette is unlit), and the tension that arises from Katsuragi’s ostensible superior position juxtaposed against Hiroki’s vastly more powerful psychic abilities, setting us up for a future conflict down the line.
We also get to see Hiroki and Tsukasa’s co-dependent relationship, with Tsukasa relying on Hiroki in their work, while Hiroki is emotionally too tangled up in Tsukasa to function without him. That’s actually genuinely interested, and it’s compared and contrasted with the victim’s relationship with his best friend/possible boyfriend -- a relationship that Hiroki and Tsukasa are, by changing his memories, destroying.
The animation is still pretty bad, but it makes up for that somewhat with some stylistic flair and some interesting aesthetic choices.
Infinite Dendrogram.
Tumblr media
★★☆☆☆
Infinite Dendrogram picks up this week with Ray and his new person-weapon Nemesis attempting to level up. After learning about a war between the NPC nations of Altar and Dryfe that ended with Altar’s defeat, Ray’s first attempt to level up sees him making both a new friend in the form of another player named Rook, and a new enemy, in the form of a mystery gunman who shoots him down for no readily apparent reason.
I really wanted to give this episode three stars, I wavered back and forth on it for quite a while, since this is still a really enjoyable episode, but ultimately I had to scrape off a point for two reasons: The first was the inclusion of some really jarring and irritating fanservice in the form of the antics of Rook’s Embryo, Babylon, which just threw me out of the episode and grated on me. The second is the scene where Ray’s brother Kuma informs him that the war between Altar and Dryfe was lost largely because when Altar’s NPC king (and remember, NPCs are sapient in this game apparently) said he would not be giving out loot rewards to players who assisted in the war, players just outright refused to help.
Which is kind of … wow. Thousands or maybe hundred of thousands of sapient AIs perished because players, who were at no risk of serious injury or permanent in-game death, refused to help out unless they got ultimately meaningless in-game rewards for doing so. It wouldn’t even as if they would be killing other sapient NPCs, since it’s clarified that Dryfe uses non-sapient robot soldiers. To make this a more bizarre turn that frames the entire playerbase of this game as sociopaths, apparently a bunch of players did fight for Dryfe, which offered rewards to them for doing so, and those players actually did murder a bunch of sapient NPCs.
I’ve elected to be fairly forgiving with the absurdity of this show’s premise, but that one worldbuilding detail kind of pushes it into the red for now.
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen.
Tumblr media
★★☆☆☆
Not a whole lot happens in episode two.
Actually, nearly nothing happens in episode two. There’s a very brief explanation of the magic system, and a short sequence that sets up the next few episodes, as Orphen is blackmailed by his sorcerous former friends to assist them in hunting down his sister Azalie, and apart from that it’s alllllllllllll flashbacks.
The flashbacks don’t really communicate anything that couldn’t have been communicated in other ways, though. I mean, in general I really don’t like flashbacks, given that they bring a story to a grinding halt, but these flashbacks are just sort of pointless. We see that Orphen was a student at the Tower of Fang, which we knew, and we meet a few of his friends, which we meet again just afterwards so it’s kind of pointless, and we get some explanation of how the Sword of Baldanders, the weapon that turned Azalie into a dragon, got to the town that Orphen is currently in -- only for us to be told the same thing in exposition a second later.
The pacing of this show is just not … great. After two episodes, it feels like there’s been maybe one or one and a half episodes of content, and I know that doesn’t sound like it’d drag too much, but I have the attention span of a horsefly, so.
ID: Invaded.
Tumblr media
★★★★☆
Continuing on from last week’s episodes, ID: Invaded -- now on its third episode, since again, it aired two episodes at once in its first week -- picks up with a new case, that of a bomber who mixes fireworks into his explosives, creating brightly coloured displays as he murders people. Diving into his mental world, Sakaido finds himself on a tower surrounded by a waterfall with dozens of people, as a sniper picks them all off. As he attempts to find clues, his progress is hindered by constantly dying, causing him to reset his memory and start over each time.
This is kind of an opposite situation to Infinite Dendrogram, where this would have been a solid three star episode, being entertaining, engaging, occasionally even thought-provoking and atmospheric (such as in the scene where Sakaido is thinking back to the aftermath of his daughter’s death, pointing out as he remembers it that his recollection of it, in which his daughter is able to talk to him before she dies, the body is recognisable, and the mortician praises her bravery, is incorrect), if not for a few small things.
In this case, it’s the final scene that pushes it up to being a four star episode. With the bomber in custody and in the cell opposite Sakaido’s, a solid four or five minutes are devoted to a harrowing sequence where Sakaido uses what he learned in the bomber’s mind to talk him into committing suicide. It’s an atmospheric, tense, and remarkably upsetting scene, made all the moreso by the voice actors’ excellent performances.
In unrelated news, for those keeping count, the surrealist director Ei Aoki references this time around is Koichi Mashimo, director of the impressively surreal and atmospheric .hack and Tsubasa Chronicle animes.
In/Spectre.
Tumblr media
★★★☆☆
So, after a first episode that was kind of all over the place, the second episode actually settles into something like a single genre, establishing itself as a light-hearted supernatural mystery with some romance elements. Which is fine, and it does it well, and I’m happy to not constantly be getting genre whiplash anymore.
This week’s episode sees Kotoko summoned up to the mountains by a snake spirit who wishes to know why a murderer tipped the body of her victim into the snake’s swamp. The main bulk of the episode is taken up by Kotoko and the snake’s interactions, with Kotoko acting as prosecutor and presenting plausible theories as to why the killer did what they did, and the snake picking holes in those theories and shooting them down.
It actually kind of works, to be honest. As Kotoko explains her theories, we’re shown them happening on screen, and since the snake points out some pretty reasonable flaws in them, it feels like a nice, even back-and-forth debate, as the two make point and counterpoint. Written well, debates like that can be really compelling viewing, and this episode actually is written really well.
There’s also some nice character development moments early on, with Kuro turning down Kotoko’s offer of accompanying her to visit the snake, only to insist she take a thermos of soup and a jacket with her, and later wandering up to meet up with her anyway. Mamoru Miyano doesn’t have the easiest job here, playing someone who is meant to have extremely flat affect and yet still make them interesting to listen to, but he pulls it off pretty well.

North America Has A God Infestation
Fandoms: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard - Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan, The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan, The Kane Chronicles - Rick Riordan
Relationships: Magnus Chase/Alex Fierro, Annabeth Chase/Percy Jackson, Anubis/Sadie Kane/Walt Stone, Thalia Grace/Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano, Nico di Angelo/Will Solace, Look Inside Too Many To List
Characters: Annabeth Chase, Magnus Chase, Look Inside Too Many To List
Last time I saw my cousin, Annabeth, she told me that not only were there Norse gods, but also Greek, Roman, and Egyptian gods. She texted me last night, saying that she told some friends about me and that everyone was going to meet up at a Starbucks in Boston.
I am currently sitting at a table in Starbucks with Annabeth. Soon, a large group of strangely dressed people walked in and sat with us. Annabeth stood up to introduce everyone.
"Alright," said Annabeth. "The girl with the SPQR shirt is Reyna, Praetor of the 12th Legion, daughter of Bellona. The girl next to her with the silver circlet is her girlfriend, Thalia, Lieutenant of the Hunters of Artemis, daughter of Zeus. Next to them Nico, son of Hades and his boyfriend Will, son of Apollo. The girl in linens is Sadie, eye of Isis. The guy wearing the same thing is her brother, Carter, eye of Horus. The guy next to me is my boyfriend, Percy, son of Poseidon. Everyone, this is my cousin, Magnus, son of Frey."
"Okay," I said. "I'll do my best to remember that."
"I thought it would be a good idea for us to all know about the other gods so that we aren't suprised as much later. Sadie, is Walt going to come?" I was confused at the last part.
"Who's Walt?" I asked. "Walt and Anubis is my boyfriend. It's complicated," said Sadie, right before a man who's head kept changing from a man to a jackal appeared in an empty chair.
“We are Walt and Anubis," said the person/god.
Just when I thought that the day couldn't get any weirder, the Nico kid said "Jules," and a zombie crawled out of the floor. "Jules, go get us a lot of coffee's," shoving a pile of bills at him.
"I feel outnumbered. Mind if I call someone?" I asked. When nobody (as in no one) objected, I grabbed my phone and hit Alex's speed dial.
"Hi! I'm in a really weird meeting. Will you come? It's at the Starbucks about a mile east of the Midgard entrance to Yggdrasil. Thanks! See you in a bit. Love you too! Bye!" then I hung up.
"Alex will be here in a moment," I said, addressing our weird group. About 30 seconds later, a girl walked through the door, changing to a boy about a foot from the table. I stood up, catching his lips in a kiss.
"Hello, Alex."
"Hello, Magnus," he said. I pulled out the empty chair next to me and he sat down.
"Everyone, this is my boyfriend-" Alex shifted into a girl, "Girlfriend, Alex, child of Loki. If you hadn't noticed, some of Loki's children can shapeshift." Jules set down 23 espressos before sinking back into the ground.
"Why are you changing from a boy to a girl?" asked Percy, who is then slapped in the head by Annabeth.
"It's called genderfluid, idiots. I'm assuming you four," she pointed at Will, Nico, Thalia, and Reyna, "know what that means, but whoever doesn't, look it up." she said, crossing her arms across her chest, leaning up against me.
"I'm sorry about, Percy, Alex he's an insensitive idiot. He's been going on about the fact that he's not Nico's type since Nico came out." said Annabeth. I noticed that at some point, everyone had acquired nametags, and I sighed.
"Samirah al-Abbas, I don't know what you are, but get your butt over here and say hi to everyone."
Suddenly, a horsefly buzzed over and landed on the chair I pulled out. Then it grew to a girl, who grabbed an espresso, chugged it, and grabbed another, sipping it slowly.
"Everyone, this is Sam, daughter of Loki. She's the one that brought my soul to Valhalla. Sam, do you know where Hearth and Blitz are hanging out? I figured I might as well invite them if they aren't here already. Also, doesn't Thor owe us a favor? I want lamb chops." Everybody looked very confused.
Sam replied with, "Well, the goat just appeared next to you, and Blitz and Hearth are behind those curtains. Come out you two."
The entire table was staring at the dwarf and alf, especially the alf as he was making strange hand motions while Magnus went to hide behind the dwarf.
Samirah introduced everyone. "The one making strange handsignals is Hearth, he's deaf, that's sign language. Magnus, Blitz or I will translate. Right now he's saying things to Magnus and I that I refuse to repeat. The one with fashion sense is a dwarf, son of Freya. His name is Blitz, and he is Hearth's boyfriend. Watch your back, the alf is a magician. He can also read lips. The goat will introduce itself."
"I am Marvin, Thor's reconsumable goat." I grabbed Jack from my necklace.
"Woah! Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Norse!" said Jack, causing everyone to jump up and grab a weapon, before slowly sitting down and disarming themselves.
“Everyone, this is Sumarbrander. He goes by Jack. This is the Sword of Summer, traded for love by Frey. Jack, can you make Marvin chops?"
About 10 minutes later, with help from Thalia, we were eating lamb chops.
"Okay," said Annabeth, "at this point this is a meet and greet. Anyone want to invite anyone else?"
"Sam, would you mind getting Thomas Jr?" Sam flew off to Valhalla, returning with someone that made everyone gasp.
"Is that Thomas Jefferson Jr?" asked Annabeth.
"Yes. Everyone meet my friend, Thomas. Please ignore the uniform and gun. I can't get him to leave them."
Next, Thalia whistled very high pitched and a group of teenagers walked in. She bowed to the first one, along with the other Greeks.
"This is Lady Artemis and her hunters. Do you mind moving us to a secluded area in the woods and rerouting guests?" Artemis complied, and then they were all in a clearing. Reyna IMed Frank, who shadowtraveled with Hazel, landing next to Nico.
"This is Hazel, daughter of Pluto, and Frank, Praetor of the 12th Legion, son of Mars." said Reyna.
Sadie called Freak, who came towing a boat with a lot of magicians, who all quickly introduced themselves. Carter bowed his head and began muttering in Ancient Egyptian. Sadie turned to Artemis and warned her that her Egyptian opposite was coming.
In a bright flash, a teenage girl was standing there. Carter introduced her as his girlfriend, Zia. Then, her voice grew deep.
"Artemis. It has been centuries."
"Hello, Ra," she said.
Percy let out a taxi cab whistle, and Blackjack appeared in the sky, followed by Tempest, who was carrying Jason and Piper, and Festus, who was carrying Calypso and Leo. They introduced themselves, and Jason hugged Thalia.
It took a while, but eventually, everyone shared their stories. When we were done, Artemis transported everyone to the Midgard entrance to Yggdrasil, where most of the Norse entered the world tree. She sent her hunters off with Thalia before going to the entrance to New Rome, then the 21st Nome, and last but not least, Camp Half-Blood. On Changing Direction, or The Statement of Purpose That Did Not Get Me Accepted Into Grad School.
I learned to write from a janitor when I was eleven years old.
He was thirty-something with an eyebrow ring and he coached the junior high boys’ basketball team. He had bright blond hair that fell over his ears in waves and he was tall, so tall that you could see him above the heads of students and teachers as he pushed a mop bucket of sudsy water through the halls at the end of a school day. His name was Bob.
I had a best friend named Lindsay and by the time we were in the sixth grade at that small Catholic school where Bob worked, in a quiet lower-middle class neighborhood outside Buffalo, we had become restless. We took to making up stories and inventing exotic characters who lived in big cities and played in rock bands. We wrote about things we had no idea of; suicides, drug abuse, gay sex, anything that broke the mold of our daily morning prayers and afternoon bus rides. We walked around the neighborhood after school and told these stories out loud, turning around every so often to make sure that the invisible gaggle of our characters was still trailing along behind us. After a while we began to use the blank pages at the backs of our school notebooks to keep track of them all. Their names, ages, hair colors, relationships and hobbies, and a brief synopsis of the lives we’d given them:
“Sully, 25. Green eyes, long dark dreadlocks. Lost his baby daughter in a flood and now lives in a cabin at the top of a hill in the woods because he’s afraid of the rain.”
One day after school Lindsay and I were sitting in the empty cafeteria whispering and scheming over our notebooks when Bob came in with the pusher broom that looked like a giant cloth caterpillar. He stopped and leaned on the broomstick when he saw us there.
“Are you girls writing?” he asked.
“Sort of.”
That was all he needed to hear.
Besides being a janitor and a basketball coach, Bob was also a poet, a frequent contributor of work to national magazines and an active member of the local writing scene. When he caught us planning ways to torture and subsequently redeem our list of characters that day in the cafeteria, he was working on his first collection of poems, to be published later that year.
Bob immediately took us under his wing, giving us copies of his newest poems on sheets of computer paper. They were flowing rhythmic pulses of spoken art that I didn’t always understand but loved nonetheless. He gave us each a notebook, spiral bound with a rainbow colored peace sign on the thin cardboard cover, that was to be used for writing only; Bob told us that our stories should have a place of their own, not crammed into the back of a notebook filled with math problems or history definitions. But even those empty notebooks didn’t last long. All we did was write, during class or silent reading time, scribbling away at our desks, pausing to chew the end of a pen while our classmates either stared, glazed over, out the windows, or studied diligently and put their heads down when they were finished. During each lunch period Lindsay and I would trade off notebooks and see what each other’s characters had gotten up to. When each story was finished we would hand them off to Bob, who would quickly return them with pages of red-inked suggestions and praise.
“Explain this further- why such hostility between father and son?”
“Love the description of the summer house on the lake- you truly are a poet!”
He spoke of us to writer friends of his, sometimes sharing our stories after we gave him our flushed and flattered permission, and later that year, when he gave us our own copies of his collection of poems, we found our names included in the short list of acknowledgements:
“To Erin and Lindsay, my prolific proteges.”
We stayed in touch with Bob after moving on to high school, trading pages through the mail in stuffed manila envelopes. He edited and released two collections of poetry from writers from all over the city, including two pieces of mine in each. By the time the second volume came out I was in college in Boston, studying music and devoting all my time to playing, listening and songwriting. I began to study CD lyric sleeves as though they were books, digging through the rhymes and imagery to find stories. I began to keep a journal of essays chronicling my new life in a new city, keeping meticulous track of everything I saw and everyone I met. I felt the stories swirling around my head like autumn leaves caught in a cyclone wind and, after I’d practiced my scales and arpeggios, I hurried to my notebook to get the details down on paper.
A few months later I graduated and moved from Boston to Brooklyn to New Jersey and finally to Nashville. In those years I have been a hostess, a barista, and a recording engineer. I’ve worked in kitchens and grocery stores, in offices and malls. I’ve spent some overnights folding denim in the middle of Manhattan and others cleaning bathrooms in the largest recording studio in the country. I’ve had ten different zip codes in nine years. I have taken a lot of buses, a lot of trains, and a lot of notes. It is true that during much of this time I’ve felt aimless. I’ve felt like a failure and a wanderer. I have questioned, sometimes frantically, everything I had believed to be my strengths, everything I had thought I was meant to do.  But through it all, I have always kept writing. I’ve scribbled in notebooks on subways and texted paragraphs to myself walking down city streets, my fingers working feverishly while I tried to avoid hitting street lamps. I have gone home to one tiny apartment or another and pulled up new documents on the computer screen, written essays and stories about the ways in which I’d been moved, and somehow getting it out of my head through the movement of my hands has always encouraged me to keep going.
During the lowest part of my post-undergrad journey I was living in a mouse and horsefly infested apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. I was half-heartedly going to job interviews at music houses and studios and taking two connecting trains into Manhattan to work full time at Gap. I went home every night and made a plate of spaghetti and butter, sitting on my twin sized bed and thinking about all the people I had seen that day and the endless stories and supporting characters that each of their lives offered. I marvelled at the smallness of myself in the midst of them and, simultaneously, how essential I was. How essential each person was in an unfathomable web of relationships and of cause and effect. It was at this lowest point that I decided I had nothing left to lose. I gathered up the stories of the people that I’d known, some for decades, some only briefly, and began to write a novel.
That novel, Rooms of The House, is about a family in the modern American rust belt, its members dealing with mental illness, bankruptcy and foreclosure, and the acceptance of each other and themselves. It tells of daughter Margot’s journey from her hometown to new cities, from her childhood friends to the colorful cast of her early twenties, and how each place and each person plays a role in helping her realize that there are some things that cannot be changed.
I know that there are still more stories for me to tell, the imagined lives of the thousands of strangers’ faces I have passed along my way: The woman who asked for a sample of decaf at my coffee shop just to have an excuse to talk to someone for a while. A landlord in Boston who I once walked in on as she cried on the phone in German. That man with the scar on the subway. That pair of kids in the street. And after taking miles of winding and crooked paths, I see my own story laid out straight in front of me. After years of wandering, I have finally allowed myself to hear what  Bob the janitor told that eleven-year-old girl. I remember once when he handed back one of the notebooks I gave him to be filled with his remarks and suggestions I saw that he had written something in bold red letters on the blank inside cover, a testimony I am finally ready to take heed of: “YOU ARE A WRITER.”
