So if a guy has low muscle mass combined with average-to-slightly-above-average amounts of fat, their BMI will be reported as normal. Skinny fat guys are walking around thinking they’re healthy. Nonetheless, as we’ll see here in a bit, a skinny fat person might have all the health issues typical of the obese. The underlying issue of skinny fat dudes is that they lack substantial muscle mass AND have average amounts of fat (which, in men, gathers primarily around the waist).  The Biggest Problem With Being Skinny Fat The biggest problem with being skinny fat is that it can deceive you that you’re perfectly healthy when you’re actually not.  A skinny fat person has a low muscle-to-fat ratio, and muscle helps your metabolic health by doing things like clearing glucose from the blood. So if you’re skinny fat, you may not look fat, but you likely have all the same health issues an obese person would have, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This is why obesity researchers often call skinny fat “normal weight obesity”; a skinny fat person has a normal weight and BMI, but when you look at other markers of obesity like insulin and blood pressure, they’re essentially obese.  What can make being skinny fat even more of a health hazard is that the fat that a skinny fat guy accumulates is often visceral fat. Visceral fat is a fat that lies deep in the body and grows primarily around our internal organs like the liver, colon, and pancreas. Visceral fat makes and releases proteins that inflame your body and constrict blood vessels, contributing to maladies like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. So visceral fat is no bueno.  So your health is the biggest issue with being skinny fat. But it’s also just not a great look.  You’ve got chicken legs and scrawny arms with a belly to boot. When you wear a t-shirt, your arms don’t fill out the sleeves, but you’ve also got a pooch showing through your midsection.  Doesn’t inspire thumos.  How to Stop Being Skinny Fat When most guys try to stop being skinny fat, they work on not being fat first. They’ll reduce calories and do lots and lots of cardio.  But this will just make you skinny. Remember, skinny fat is caused by a lack of muscle mass combined with average-to-slightly-above-average body fat.  Instead of focusing on being less fat, focus on being less skinny by increasing your muscle mass.  How do you increase your muscle mass? Two ways: 1) strength training, and 2) nutrition. Strength Training If you want to stop being skinny fat, you’ve got to strength train consistently for months. Compound barbell lifts like the squat, bench press, shoulder press, and deadlift will give you the most bang for your buck when it comes to strength and muscle gains.  If barbell training isn’t your thing, you’ve got other options. Bodyweight exercises, dumbbell routines, and resistance bands all provide muscle-boosting benefits.  Strength training works, but you have to do it consistently for a long time. Don’t expect to see a drastic decline in your skinny fatness in just a few weeks of strength training. Expect it to take a few months. It seems like a lot of guys who are trying not to be skinny fat give up on their training after just a few weeks. Don’t do this! Keep going. Be consistent, and the results will come. As you increase your muscle mass through strength training, you’ll create a virtuous cycle that will allow you to increase muscle mass while reducing body fat at the same time. The American Medical Association (AMA) has warned against using the Body Mass Index (BMI) as the sole metric to determine whether an individual is overweight or not—citing “historical harm” from the measurement.
BMI is measured by dividing an individual’s weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. It does not measure body fat directly. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 among adults aged 20 and above is seen as “healthy.” BMI between 25 and 29.9 is seen as “overweight” while a value of 30 and above is classified as “obese.” In a June 14 press release, the AMA said that BMI as a measurement tool was “racist” as it has largely relied on data collected from generations of non-Hispanic white populations.
The organization said that the relative body shape and composition of human beings differ across racial and ethnic groups, genders, sexes, and ages. These factors are “essential” when applying BMI. The AMA warned that BMI must not be used as a “sole criterion” to deny any appropriate insurance reimbursement.
Though BMI is “significantly correlated” with the amount of fat mass in the general populace, it loses predictability when applied to an individual, the group stated.
The AMA is now suggesting that BMI be used in conjunction with other factors like measurements of visceral fat, body adiposity index, body composition, relative fat mass, waist circumference, and genetic or metabolic factors.
“There are numerous concerns with the way BMI has been used to measure body fat and diagnose obesity, yet some physicians find it to be a helpful measure in certain scenarios,” said AMA Immediate Past President Dr. Jack Resneck.
“It is important for physicians to understand the benefits and limitations of using BMI in clinical settings to determine the best care for their patients.”

The AMA’s BMI announcement comes as there has been a growing attempt to disregard the issue of body weight. Terms like “weight bias” have sprouted up as a form of discrimination, with doctors feeling pressured to avoid mentioning weight.
There are also “don’t weigh me” cards that patients can hand over to doctors during an office visit stating, “If you really need my weight, please tell me why so I can give you my informed consent.”
In a May 2021 commentary, Martha Rosenberg, an author whose work has been cited by the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, warned that recent movements like “fat acceptance,” which seeks to normalize obese and overweight bodies, is a “dangerous idea,” citing the negative health consequences resulting from excess weight.
Research has found that as BMI readings climb, an individual’s chances of contracting chronic conditions like heart disease and high cholesterol also rise.
Many experts see BMI as a helpful tool to predict health risks. “The best way to think about BMI is as a risk-prediction tool,” Brad Dieter, an exercise physiologist, told Health.
“Think about it like age. Regardless of what else is going on, the older you are, the more likely you are to have a chronic health condition… The same is true with BMI. The higher your BMI, the more at risk you are for a poor health outcome,” he said.
AMA’s attempt to disregard BMI is happening while similar attempts are being made in gender as well. Johns Hopkins University recently courted controversy for describing a woman as a “non-man.” The university was eventually forced to take down the glossary.

Also on the topic of work and getting deep and i need to rant,
During a meeting at work today we were talking about new health benefits that the job offers and they mentioned getting testing done to see if you qualify for new offers based on how “healthy” you are, and in order to qualify as “healthy” your BMI needs to be at a certain place.
As someone who has struggled with an ED my whole life and is currently in recovery it absolutely infuriated me that those types of comments are so common, and that diet culture is so normalized.
BMI is absolute crap just so you know, it wasn’t even made to measure the human body in the first place and it will never accurately measure your body so don’t listen to the doctors when they tell you that, doctors don’t know the first thing about nutrition and how your body manages food.
Basically my rant is that you shouldn’t listen to anything doctors tell you about your body weight or the food you eat (unless it’s a serious medical condition or problem) the people who are really specialized for it are nutritionists and dietician’s
No food is unhealthy, every single food group and food item you have has a function and a purpose for your body to help it do the things it needs to do, don’t cut out certain foods diet culture deems unhealthy cause it’s all crap
And don’t go on diets (unless it’s medically needed) they will never work and they will end up doing damage to you in the long run, keto is crap, intermediate fasting is crap, etc…
Just eat what you want whenever you want, you should never have to put thought into what you are fueling your body with
It will always amaze me how little the world knows about Ed’s and the damage that they do and it’s honestly so disappointing

I am so over HAES. I do think it is interesting that studies are showing that it is protective to have a higher BMI in seniors. (Between 25-35). So, it really is more like BMI is more fluid than we may have thought. You look at a 22 year old with a BMI of 23 and you are going to see someone (probably) unhealthy (or fast approaching) but that same BMI in a 70 year old could signal much higher chance of mortality vs a higher BMI. The funny thing is we always see the 22 year olds with BMIs greater than 25 going on about their “great” health while eating Cheesecake Factory. Yes it’s really interesting but if you think about it, it really makes sense. Older people struggle more to take up important nutrition and is prone to get sick more often. Even some lose their ability to taste foods. So it’s important to have some stored fat in case something happens that makes eating harder.
I would think that HAES would run these studies dry, but most of them also mention that higher bmi in younger people is bad for their health so I guess that’s why they don’t use these studies to make a point. Or they just nitpick the points they like as per usual
