31 days of Horror - Fresh Enough List: Day 1 - Deadstream (2022)

Welcome to the yearly list boils and ghouls. Let's start with something fun. Deadstream is a horror comedy but don't let that deter you from watching. While the laughs are there the film has a lot of good tension and scares to keep it firmly in the horror lane. Deadstream follows Shawn, a struggling livestreamer, as he decides to spend a night in a haunted house to save his channel and career as he has done a few of the text book youtuber screw ups and lost a lot of money. Yeah I know that's a pretty bare bones summary but half the fun of this movie is watching what happens to Shawn as well as figuring out what's going on in the house.

Now as a fan of found footage movies, i find this a pretty solid entry for that type of direction. The cast is small but feels bigger as there is heavy interaction between Shawn and his audience in his chat which helps to draw the viewer in to the premise more than earlier found footage could have. (also wont be the only found footage of a streamer we will be covering this month but that's not a bad thing).

Effects are on the lower end of quality but that didn't bother me. Yeah, they can look a little cheep but it adds to the camp factor of the low budget setting in my opinion. The acting is great. Shawn is just punchable enough that you still enjoy his character but i feel like the chat and his special guest are the real meat of the storytelling. Also feel i need to mention that the film is directed by the husband and wife duo of Joseph (also stars as Shawn) and Vanessa Winter. We will be visiting more from them during the month and they certainly deserve the shout out. Anyway, you can find Deadstream on Shudder so go check it out. It's a good way to kick off halloween proper.

This is almost a near perfect kdrama horror series. It has a fantastic storyline and all the characters are written on point. The acting is top notch as well. Now obviously the drama is very dark theme, it deals with exorcism’s and hauntings so it does sometimes get too bloody/gory so it might not be for everyone. If you’re a horror fan though this is definitely a must watch.

It's October 1st. That means it's Halloween Season

31 days of Horror - Fresh Enough List: Day 16 - Malum (2023)

I do love a good psychological mind fuck of a horror movie. That is what you are presented with in Malum. A remake of The Last Shift by the same director, Malum follows a rookie cops first night on the job and the last day of the precinct her father once served in. Not all is well in the city however. Her father did some not so great things so she isn't getting the warmest of welcomes. The city also seems to be dealing with some unrest of the very unnerving kind. Malum likes to play with your perception. You will be just as uncertain as our heroine as to what is real and what isn't. Am I being vague on purpose? Fuck yes. I want you to see this movie.
