Every now and then I think about how subtitles (or dubs), and thus translation choices, shape our perception of the media we consume. It's so interesting. I'd wager anyone who speaks two (or more) languages knows the feeling of "yeah, that's what it literally translates to, but that's not what it means" or has answered a question like "how do you say _____ in (language)?" with "you don't, it's just … not a thing, we don't say that."
I've had my fair share of "[SHIP] are [married/soulmates/fated/FANCY TERM], it's text!" "[CHARACTER A] calls [CHARACTER B] [ENDEARMENT/NICKNAME], it's text!" and every time. Every time I'm just like. Do they though. Is it though. And a lot of the time, this means seeking out alternative translations, or translation meta from fluent or native speakers, or sometimes from language learners of the language the piece of media is originally in.
Why does it matter? Maybe it doesn't. To lots of people, it doesn't. People have different interests and priorities in fiction and the way they interact with it. It's great. It matters to me because back in the early 2000s, I had dial-up internet. Video or audio media that wasn't available through my local library very much wasn't available, but fanfiction was. So I started to read English language Gundam Wing fanfic before I ever had a chance to watch the show. When I did get around to watching Gundam Wing, it was the original Japanese dub. Some of the characters were almost unrecognisable to me, and first I doubted my Japanese language ability, then, after checking some bits with friends, I wondered why even my favourite writers, writers I knew to be consistent in other things, had made these characters seem so different … until I had the chance to watch the US-English dub a few years later. Going by that adaptation, the characterisation from all those stories suddenly made a lot more sense. And the thing is, that interpretation is also valid! They just took it a direction that was a larger leap for me to make.
Loose adaptations and very free translations have become less frequent since, or maybe my taste just hasn't led me their way, but the issue at the core is still a thing: Supernatural fandom got different nuances of endings for their show depending on the language they watched it in. CQL and MDZS fandom and the never-ending discussions about 知己 vs soulmate vs Other Options. A subset of VLD fans looking at a specific clip in all the different languages to see what was being said/implied in which dub, and how different translators interpreted the same English original line. The list is pretty much endless.
And that's … idk if it's fine, but it's what happens! A lot of the time, concepts -- expressed in language -- don't translate 1:1. The larger the cultural gap, the larger the gaps between the way concepts are expressed or understood also tend to be. Other times, there is a literal translation that works but isn't very idiomatic because there's a register mismatch or worse. And that's even before cultural assumptions come in. It's normal to have those. It's also important to remember that things like "thanks I hate it" as a sentiment of praise/affection, while the words translate literally quite easily, emphatically isn't easy to translate in the sense anglophone internet users the phrase.
Every translation is, at some level, a transformative work. Sometimes expressions or concepts or even single words simply don't have an exact equivalent in the target language and need to be interpreted at the translator's discretion, especially when going from a high-context/listener-responsible source language to a low-context/speaker-responsible target language (where high-context/listener responsible roughly means a large amount of contextual information can be omitted by the speaker because it's the listener's responsibility to infer it and ask for clarification if needed, and low-context/speaker-responsible roughly means a lot of information needs to be codified in speech, i.e. the speaker is responsible for providing sufficiently explicit context and will be blamed if it's lacking).
Is this a mouse or a rat? Guess based on context clues! High-context languages can and frequently do omit entire parts of speech that lower-context/speaker-responsible languages like English regard as essential, such as the grammatical subject of a sentence: the equivalent of "Go?" - "Go." does largely the same amount of heavy lifting as "is he/she/it/are you/they/we going?" - "yes, I am/he/she/it is/we/you/they are" in several listener-responsible languages, but tends to seem clumsy or incomplete in more speaker-responsible ones. This does NOT mean the listener-responsible language is clumsy. It's arguably more efficient! And reversely, saying "Are you going?" - "I am (going)" might seem unnecessarily convoluted and clumsy in a listener-responsible language. All depending on context.
This gets tricky both when the ambiguity of the missing subject of the sentence is clearly important (is speaker A asking "are you going" or "is she going"? wait until next chapter and find out!) AND when it's important that the translator assign an explicit subject in order for the sentence to make sense in the target language. For our example, depending on context, something like "are we all going?" - "yes" or "they going, too?" might work. Context!
As a consequence of this, sometimes, translation adds things – we gain things in translation, so to speak. Sometimes, it's because the target language needs the extra information (like the subject in the examples above), sometimes it's because the target language actually differentiates between mouse and rat even though the source language doesn't. However, because in most cases translators don't have access to the original authors, or even the original authors' agencies to ask for clarification (and in most cases wouldn't get paid for the time to put in this extra work even if they did), this kind of addition is almost always an interpretation. Sometimes made with a lot of certainty, sometimes it's more of a "fuck it, I've got to put something and hope it doesn't get proven wrong next episode/chapter/ten seasons down" (especially fun when you're working on a series that's in progress).
For the vast majority of cases, several translations are valid. Some may be more far-fetched than others, and there'll always be subjectivity to whether something was translated effectively, what "effectively" even means …
ANYWAY. I think my point is … how interesting, how cool is it that engaging with media in multiple languages will always yield multiple, often equally valid but just sliiiiightly different versions of that piece of media? And that I'd love more conversations about how, the second we (as folks who don't speak the material's original language) start picking the subtitle or dub wording apart for meta, we're basically working from a secondary source, and if we're doing due diligence, to which extent do we need to check there's nothing substantial being (literally) lost -- or added! -- in translation?

Hey dogman, idk if you answered this
Who, out of both DSAF and Dialtown, was your favourite to write and/or create?
It's very hard for me to pick favourites with my characters because I don't tend to give characters a lot of screen-time unless I find a character interesting or fun to write. You've caught me in a talkative mood, so warning, there's an onslaught of text coming!
DSaF: Dave was the most fun to write for, as I remember it. I mean, the guy is the walking personification of chaos and even when he's being constructive (eg, rigging robots to do insane stuff), it's usually in a destructive capacity. Dave will do LITERALLY ANYTHING but contribute to society in meaningful/valuable ways.
In terms of what character-writing I was most 'proud' of, I was also pretty happy with Dr Henry Miller, as a villain. Namely the research he embarked on, described in his logs in DSaF 3 (which the fandom evidently agreed with, as I got really strong feedback on those logs.)
One issue a lot of people (including myself) have with canon William Afton is that he's this kind of mad scientist character but his research doesn't really seem to be... idk, going anywhere? Other than using remnant (soul nectar?) to make kids possess robots, it's kind of a mystery how he got to this point he did from running a bad fast food restaurant. William gets fleshed out motivations in TSE and even then, it mainly revolves around his relationship with Henry Emily, iirc. It's actually pretty accurate to how real serial killers think, imo, but there's a pretty wide berth between this kind of serial killer and becoming a sci-fi fast-food mad scientist... So, I decided to try to bridge that gap.
DSaF Henry's logs actually mention where the idea for his research came from, namely the fact that he existed in a world with normal scientific rules just like ours and seemingly discovered something supernatural, and he approaches it like an amoral scientist would - trying to figure out how to figure out more about the fabric of reality using the newly discovered phenomenon of possession. The 'joy of creation' phrase people pulled from Golden Freddy's phone call in FNaF 1 is given context - Henry is trying to find out what's on the other side (and eventually, how existence itself formed.)
There's other aspects to his character that make him more interesting too, like the implication that his research is partially an excuse for him to act on an underlying sadism (with scenes implying that he inflicts damage on others than can't be justified as assisting with his research.) His background as a dissident/quack laughing-stock scientist (thanks to pushing his soul theory in a best-selling book, which is considered pseudoscience) BEFORE he embarked on his journey to become a fast food tycoon also makes it less farfetch'd that he'd be capable of y'know, harvesting human souls intentionally to continue his research?
I had more for the character on paper that people haven't seen but some of it wasn't revealed due to it feeling a bit too disturbing to publish. None of the contents would've been all that controversial, more just too tonally disturbing when written about in detail (like a omitted part from his backstory/lore post where he managed to pick up a hazy audio of his wife + son's crying from the radio of the car his wife/son drowned in and reacted with genuine elation upon realizing he'd discovered a new scientific phenomenon (as this was the first time Henry witnessed soul-possession.)) Yeah.
I don't feel much of a need to revisit Henry as a character because as a series villain, he was pretty thoroughly-written and he did his job effectively... And his fate was well earned! (He even got an epilogue short-story a few years back, further cementing his fate!)
Dialtown: From the characters/writing that the fandom has seen? Tough to say. I genuinely really like every DT character. Gingi and Mayor Mingus are two of my favourite characters to write for because they're both really insistent and react to adversity in a really comically indignant way. Mingus is more like Gingi than she cares to admit in very specific ways, which is the core hypocrisy of her character - she's one of the most abnormal things IN Dialtown, and spends the game on a quest opposing abnormality that she, herself, can't stand.
Many absolute rulers have debilitating physical and/or mental cruxes and despite that, usually have the final say on what is/isn't okay, often guided by arbitrary preferences. It's funny to remember all of the ancient kings and emperors who dictated how others should act, talk and even think, when very many of them themselves were anything except a good reflection of their own subjects! It's an irony I quite enjoy and leads to a fun character to write for!
My favourite DT writing is probably some of my Callum Crown speech drafts. I have a definite bias here since Crown's character is based on many figures I've encountered in my own reading (and his story relates to topics I enjoy reading about.) A lot of that is real nerd shit that wouldn't be interesting to 99.9% of DT fans (like a long conversation where Crown + Milt discuss a campaign speech Milt wrote for Crown and they bicker about if the wording/arguments used are truly honest.) Again, not super relevant to Dialtown-proper, but it explains a lot about why the world of DT ended up the way it did.
Realistically, the story of Dialtown itself is basically a weird little epilogue to a story that ended decades upon decades ago, centered around a bunch of small-town nobodies circling around the carcass of the last surviving main character of the old story.
I'm also very happy with Gingi's character partially because I know more about Gingi's past/future than you guys do. Gingi has such rotten memory that Gingi's backstory before DT's story begins is basically a complete mystery. Thanks to Gingi never getting close enough to any humans before laying its eggs, there's nobody in Gingi's life that can fill in the gaps. Companionship means so much to Gingi because prior to meeting The Gang, Gingi is aware of a massive and unknown block of time that's a complete mystery precisely because Gingi had nobody in its life. To Gingi, this time was basically akin to being non-sentient or dead, and Gingi would never go back.
While I was making DSaF, I drafted a ton of other stories on paper. I considered making most of them, but decided not to for various reasons, despite getting some solid feedback from collaborators. Bits of almost all of those project ideas made it into DT, with Gingi having traits from several other main characters I prototyped years and years ago. This includes where Gingi came from and what exactly Gingi is. I don't want to mislead people into thinking Gingi is more important than it is, like Gingi is the key to unlocking DT lore (I promise there's a LOT of aimless scuttling/devouring in Gingi's past and relatively little else!) BUT: Of everything from those old scrapped projects, Gingi is what I decided deserved to survive the most. And that has to count for something.
One day I'd love to make sequels to DT and perhaps explore some of the stuff I've described above, like why the hell the world of DT is the way it is or maybe where the hell Gingi spawned from. Thanks

reading is subjective: Robert Jordan and romance
I'm both amused and bemused by the juxtaposition of two regularly-expressed fannish opinions:
Jordan wasn’t good at writing romance
<insert WOT couple here> is my FAVOURITE SHIP OF ALL TIME!
I think there are few things at play here.
1. Romance is not one-size-fits-all in its appeal. I’m reminded of this whenever I venture into the romance genre, with all its different tropes and sub-genres. Even knowing which tropes and authors I’m more likely to like, I find that genre very hit-or-miss (perhaps because my narrative tastes and expectations were developed while mainly reading other genres).  But there’s obviously an audience for stories which don’t -- or which don’t quite -- appeal to me.
Different people want, and expect, different things from romance in fiction, and the borderlands between “I don’t like this” and “This isn’t any good” can get rather murky at times.
2. In WOT there are a number of romantic scenes which take place off-screen. Most obviously, sex scenes are implied fade-to-black affairs, but we are not shown -- for example -- the conversation Nynaeve and Lan after leaving Fal Dara (TGH:12) nor their “moonlit walks” while they’re at the Stone, and we get only glimpses of those three days, which Elayne and Rand spend kissing in corners and discussing rulership (TSR:9).
Why? Because other scenes took precedence? Or because Jordan wasn’t interested in / comfortable with / good at writing such moments? (I suspect “some combination of the above, varying depending on the scene at hand”.)
Given WOT’s length and the number of characters competing for page-time, there's some logic behind omitting scenes if they would have been too awkward or banal, or just wouldn’t have progressed the story enough. But it also means that there are potentially-important moments in characters’ relationships which we don’t see, and thus fewer opportunities to develop the connection between them.
3. These gaps leave quite a bit of space to read between the lines and for readers to reach their own interpretations.  Which could account for some differences in opinions.
4. Readers have strong, and sometimes wildly different, opinions of WOT characters. And how much one likes a character can influence how invested one is in their romantic relationship(s), which in turn influences how effectively one considers that romance to have been written.
This doesn’t guarantee anything, of course. Lots of Egwene fans are not a fan of her end-game romance, for example, and one can have a favourite ship but still have criticisms of the ways it was written. Or to have criticisms of other relationships in the story. But for myself, if I’m feeling invested in a fictional relationship, I’m much more inclined to view things positively. To want to view things positively.
5. It’s possible that some of the romances would have been more satisfying/convincing had Jordan been able to finish the series himself.
Team Jordan were bound to try to make Jordan’s plans work, whereas RJ would have had more freedom to throw his plans out the window in favour of better ideas. But I also think that Jordan had something of a knack for “romance that seemingly pops up out of nowhere”, and as the person who had laid the ground for these developments, would have been more capable of pulling them off than Sanderson was.

People complaining about 'queer baiting' when they ought to be more concerned about the amount of fetishisation that occurs when people ship two men lol
Hey Nonny,
I’m gonna assume you’re not trying to be a dick, and are coming from a good place, though you taking the time out to put this ask in a weird serif font is leaving me wondering if you’re trying to stand on a soapbox, but I’m going to ignore that for now, and I ask anyone replying to this post to please also grant that same respect. I only wish to educate, learn, and interact, after all.
I get what you’re trying to say re: queerbaiting, I really do. And fetishization is a problem, I agree.
Let’s tackle the queerbaiting first.
Let it be known to you that a large majority of the people calling “queerbaiting” are queer people and academics. I know the false stigma that “fandom is full of stupid little girls” still exists and is something that, quite frankly, this ask is implying and therefore helping to perpetuate. It’s not. Honestly, with this take you have here, you’re disregarding and invalidating the feelings of millions of other queer people who genuinely feel when something is queerbaiting because it’s something they have experienced over and over and OVER again and media just “LOL OOPS SORRY WON’T DO IT AGAIN”.
Disney is a perfect example of this. How many “first LGBT characters” has Disney had now? At least one a year for the past decade.
Listen, the people who initially called it out years ago for Sherlock were older folks who have lived decades of media constantly teasing gay relationships and then not following through with it at the end... literally “baiting” queer people to watch their shows because more people = more money.
Anyway, Gattiss confirmed he used homoerotic subtext to bait people, so I don’t know what else to say on this matter. That link also has some additional articles and sources that came out regarding the queerbaiting aspect of Sherlock, and they’re all good reads, so I do recommend checking them out.
Some other interesting reads, if only so you can gain some empathy for the others who DO see it as queerbaiting:
Gender and Queer Fan Labour on Tumblr: The Case of BBC’s Sherlock (Webarchive link, so give it a few to load)
The Elephant in the Room: Authorship, Queerbaiting and Sherlock
Queerbaiting in Sherlock
PODCAST: Queerbaiting in Sherlock
From Queer Reading to Queerbaiting - DiVA Portal
And as I’ve mentioned in past posts, I personally believe Sherlock IS queerrbaiting WITHOUT a confirmation in S5. They had the chance to stop it in S3, and instead they ramped it up. And yes, if you only watch Sherlock and omit S3 and TAB completely, I can see the queerbaiting argument null and void. But instead they made the episode that John was supposed to be getting married the gayest episode in the whole series, next to TAB. So I dunno, my friend.
Now, I shall discuss the very thin line of fetishization vs shipping.
I am not a professional AND I am a fairly recently-realized member of the LGBT community, so I don’t feel it’s my place to tell you what’s what.
There’s a really interesting Tumblr post by LGBT+ Weekly about this very thing that I think offers a “both sides” approach: Shipping and queer fetishization. And this interesting and on-point post here: About Fandom, Slash, and Fetishizing Gay Men.
From here, I can only offer my opinion, not fact, and I am open to being educated.
Yes, absolutely some people fetishize LGBT relationships. I’m NOT going to say there aren’t. But a majority of people ship ANY ship because it helps them understand themselves. It’s just that simple, and to tell someone that them shipping characters is bad / no good / fetishization can be harmful to them and make them fear “being gay”. Shipping characters is a way of disconnecting themselves from, well, themselves, and it’s a “safe place” to “come out” or discover themselves.
To me, you’re breaking down fetishization as “I like reading about two people fucking” and nothing beyond that, and not taking into account that many people like a pairing because of chemistry, or because someone sees themselves in a character and are exploring their own sexuality through it. If that’s the case, then I guess all M/F ships are are fetishizations? Why is it only M/M that people decry “fetishization”, when F/F is apparently not (clarification: it totally can also be)? So, is me liking Johnlock any different than my Zutara ship? Why?
Plus, the reason so many people ship M/M ships is because there’s just SO MANY MALE CHARACTERS ON ANY GIVEN SHOW.
I get what you’re trying to say, Nonny, I really do. And I know the definition of fetish. But AGAIN, these are characters, not real people, and you’re disregarding other aspects of shipping. Not everyone reads smut to get off. And even if they did, why is that so bad for some people? Personally, I read it because I enjoy reading stories about my favourite characters enjoying being together. I enjoy the dynamic, the possibilities, the chemistry and the love. That it’s never too late to find your person. That two broken souls can help heal each other.
Anyway, TL;DR of all this is:
YOUR experience is NOT someone else’s experience.
You didn’t see Sherlock as queerbaiting? Fine, but please understand there’s a reason so many other people DO and it’s not just fandom saying it. The general audience also has said it’s queerbaiting.
You see shipping as fetishization? Okay, and that’s fine. Your definition of fetishization means fictional people having sex, I guess. Maybe I’m just genuinely naïve, but... isn’t that kind of... TERF-y or homophobic? I mean... many people use same-sex shipping and assorted headcanons to help them understand themselves and their sexuality. And why is M/F shipping NOT fetishization, given the broad definition you’re implying by your ask? And I don’t want to get too deep into asexuality, but read up on aegosexuality. Are you then saying aces are fetishists too? Seems like aces can’t enjoy anything, I guess.
They’re fictional characters. Not real people.
Look, I’m stupid and naïve, I get that. And if I have the wrong take here, I’m genuinely interested in hearing your respectful thoughts, along with other people’s. Just, please respect and understand that everyone is not YOU. It’s rather selfish to think that your experiences are everyone else’s, if I’m being honest.
I’m not asking for you to “see my side of things”, just to have a bit of empathy, is all. It can go a long way in a world where just being who you are can get you killed. Fandom and shipping is an escape for a lot of people, because reality is a cruel son of a bitch.
All this said, Nonny, I just want you to be safe and healthy. If discussions of shipping and queerbaiting bother you, please black list the tags, get out of fandom, and please take care of yourself.

Why Doc Ock WOULDN’T be a goddam rapist!
Tumblr media
I can’t believe I have to spell that out, let alone outright explain it. But fine, let’s talk about why Otto’s actions in Superior with MJ are way out of whack for his character.
Basically, Doc Ock wouldn’t view using MJ’s feelings for Peter or her history with him as rape. I just don’t think he’s so dumb not to realise that that’s immoral and him taking advantage of her, which he wouldn’t do.
Now, Doc Ock has  taken advantage of people, including women, before and even visited violence upon them. But there is a big difference in each of those situations.
Obviously with Betty Brant, Aunt May, Felicia, Mary Jane and certain other women, Otto has kidnapped them or threatened to harm them. But this has been a strictly functionary action on his part. Person A is of value to Person/People B. Otto wants something from Person/People B, therefore he will threaten Person A in order to get it from them. It’s a clinical and functionary decision. He would (and has) done this with male abductees. It’s not a signifier of his feelings towards women as a whole.
By extension in his pettier moments he’s attempted to harm people as a form of revenge. But it has never been strictly gendered. He bears the world malice in general.
Let’s get a bit more specific though.
With Aunt May he was ostensibly being himself (in personality and  body) whilst omitting the fact that he was a super villain. However, his main use of her was as a means of escape and furthering his one true love, science. He wasn’t pretending to be someone she knew. He wasn’t putting on the face of someone who looked noticeably younger or different from himself so that could never have been a factor in May’s affections for him. And he wasn’t sleeping with her!  Yeah, that’s kind of a critical difference between his relationships with Anna Maria and Aunt May. Hell, it’s highly unlikely he felt legitimate romantic feelings for her. More likely he had a soft spot for her because she reminded him of his own dearly departed mother.
And let’s remember he displayed lingering affection for May even after she ceased being useful to him. He privately praised her kindness.
Tumblr media
He sought to connect with her at Christmas and chose to leave when he realized he’d spoil the holiday for her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was upset when he learned she was in a coma and had flowers sent to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What about Black Cat? He clearly liked her and forced her to remain in his hideout. Later he nearly beat her to death. The difference here is that Otto never forced himself upon her or tried to use deception to get her into bed. His attempts to kill her only occurred after she betrayed and stole from him, going on to team up with his enemy and actively work against him. Again, this wasn’t a gendered thing on his part. He was avenging himself on a specific person for specific slights against him.
We then come to Angelina Brancale, a.k.a. Stunner.
Along with his associate, Carolyn Trainer, Otto planned on creating a virtual reality construct that could interact with the real world. This construct would be of Otto himself and assume his place in order to avoid Otto risking his life. They needed a test subject though, someone who wasn’t going to be missed. Otto selected Angela Brancale who was enamoured with him and would’ve done anything for him. Angela went through months of sometimes painful experiments with the end result being the creation of an interactive avatar of her own.
This was Stunner, the super strong, beautiful, Amazonian companion to Doc Ock. Stunner reflected the obese Angela’s ideal self-image.
Superficially this one might seem like a clear-cut case of exploitation. To a certain extent it absolutely is, but it is more complicated than that. For starters it’s obvious that Angela wanted  to become Stunner and enjoyed  being her. There is also no indication that Otto strictly speaking forced or tricked her into doing anything. Yes, she was selected because of her affections to him and how she wouldn’t be missed.
But we do not know if she was briefed about the potential ordeal she would have to go through or if she had the option of bowing out at any point. Carolyn Trainer referred to her as a ‘trooper’ for putting up with all the experiments and the pain they entailed. Carolyn is a villainess but it at least implies that Angela had agency in this situation. Angela and Carolyn later teamed up and seemed civil with one another, which further implies that there was no ill-will between then. If Angela had been tricked or lacked agency that’d unlikely be the case.
Additionally there is no evidence to suggest before or during Angela’s transformation into Stunner that Otto was having sex with her or using sex to manipulate her. There isn’t even any evidence that they were having sex after she became Stunner.
As final food for thought, he genuinely loved her when she was Stunner and it seemed that he connected to her because he understood the suffering she endured due to her weight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, and of course, Otto wasn’t pretending to be someone or something he wasn’t with Stunner. If anything he was startlingly vulnerable with her.
The only other significant relationship Otto had pre-Superior was with his fiancée. However, there is 0 evidence of him manipulating her during their courtship. He wasn’t even a villain at that point so he’d have had nothing to lie to her about.
Let’s also consider the following regarding Otto’s interactions with women.
This is the man who literally tried to cure AIDs just to save his ex fiancée Mary Alice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the guy who kidnapped Betty Brant and Aunt May to lure out Spider-Man and then offered them tea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the guy who was pleased to see Peter and MJ happy together because it meant his enemy was back to his upbeat and normal self and would thus continue to be the adversary he Doctor Octopus deserved.
Tumblr media
And yet @danslott-blog, Slott-stans, Superior-stans, Spider-Fans who are none of those things and just people in general are willing to accept that this  guy would be a rapist?
We are happy to say he really  wouldn’t even imagine that sex with MJ or Anna Maria would be morally reprehensible?
Just creatively speaking, not in terms of his character or personality, we’re happy to say THAT guy would play in that ballpark and be depicted this way? Shall we be chill if Carnage was outted as a pedophile while we are at it too?
Of course the counter arguments to the above would be that his attempts to sleep with MJ at least were attempts to prove his superiority over Spider-Man. Or to avenger himself upon him in some way.
First of all the entire concept of Superior is broken. It postulates that Otto is seeking to prove himself better than Spider-Man by becoming an improved version of him. But the problem is that the logic doesn’t line up there.
If the only way he can prove himself better than Spider-Man is by literally becoming him  and in turn turning him into Doctor Octopus, that’s tantamount to admitting Spider-Man was always better than himself. The only way he could have won is by becoming the guy he always claimed was inferior to himself.
Second of all in regards to his attempted ‘conquest’ of MJ, sleeping with her wouldn’t even prove his superiority. It’s made clear by issue #2 that he’s merely interested in MJ for sex and no other reason. He accesses Peter’s memories of being intimate with MJ and experiences the sensation of her body that way, being implied to masturbate during this internal screaming. Afterwards, he states he’s got her off his mind and the story clearly conveys that he’s going to turn his attention to other romantic/sexual pursuits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So he only wanted to sleep with MJ and nothing else. Not even that, he just wanted to know the sensation of sleeping with MJ and was content to access Peter’s memories and wank off to that end internal screaming intensifies.
By this logic then he’s proven himself if anything inferior  to Peter. And no, I’m not making some kind of judgement about masturbation. My point is if Mary Jane consented to sleep with Peter, but has not done that with Otto, then by definition Peter would have accomplished something Otto would not have. If you remove sex from the equation and just said Otto was trying to ‘win’ a mere kiss from Mary Jane and she didn’t do that, but she had done so for Peter, then by definition Otto would’ve failed where Peter has succeeded.
The fact that he was content to move on from her by simply browsing Peter’s memories (from his POV Peter’s ‘accomplishments’ if you will) means that he was never trying to sleep with MJ to prove his superiority in the first place. He was just a horny creep. Nothing more.
Not to mention, he is aware Peter had slept with Mary Jane and done so on multiple occasions. How would even regularly sleeping with her prove himself superior? It’s just sex. He’d know that. He’s both an adult and an incredible clinical person who clearly knows how to romance a woman. One of his biggest regrets in life was giving up his fiancée.
So Otto would be aware that sex would be no proof of his superiority and it wouldn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. What would really  prove himself superior would be having and maintaining a relationship with MJ that was either longer lasting or over all better than the one she held with Peter.
But he’s not interested in that because he moves on after wanking off. And he is trading off of trickery to even get his foot in the door in the first place. This isn’t a case of him being a younger or more attractive man and using his own charms and traits to court her.
He is only got as far as he did because he looks like someone she knows, because she believes he is that person, because he’s using Peter’s memories to pander to what she likes (like her favourite movie) and circumvent what he knows will turn her off. Hell in ASM #698 he jumps immediately into a relationship with her but it’s obvious to both him and MJ that the emotional groundwork for that had been laid in preceding months.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So even if Otto was enough of a slimeball to not consider this rape, a man that intelligent and egotistical would still recognize that sex wouldn’t be a badge of superiority on his part.
If anything his own romantic life would be something more worthy of pride.
Let’s say we accept for the moment that Otto conforms to stereotypical standards of attractiveness. Well then what would be more impressive from your POV?
a)    Wooing a stunning actress/supermodel when she believes you are someone else she knows, someone much in their 20s or early 30s, very in shape and at least fairly handsome
Or
b)   Being a rotund, arguably ugly (but at least typically unattractive) middle aged man and wooing a relatively attractive woman your age, a younger more attractive woman who was immediately smitten by you and a younger woman smitten by you that your own genius transformed into a veritable vision of stunning beauty?*
Yeah, obviously the latter right?
Also, the idea that sex with MJ would constitute a form of revenge is highly out of character for Otto.
That is more of a Norman Osborn tactic. Otto actively despises Norman’s ideology, as elaborated upon in Superior Team-Up #11-12. In those issues Otto and Norman endeavour to work together in spite of a philosophical disagreement. Otto feels that Spider-Man should be defeated through science whereas Norman feels they should attack his soul.
To prove the point Norman infects Otto’s old fiancee Mary Alice with a deadly virus (read: AIDs, this was the 1990s) so Otto will understand the torment they could inflict upon Spider-Man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Initially Otto seeks bloody revenge upon Norman. However, he defies Norman by instead reaffirming his original belief. He sought to defeat Spider-Man through science and thus prove his philosophy superior to Norman’s.
Tumblr media
Okay. That wasn’t published at the time of Superior #2 so let’s say we ignore it.
Even doing that, Otto had been defined for decades as someone who wouldn’t go in for such spiteful attacks on his enemies.
In Spec #221 (part of the ‘Web of Death’ storyline) Peter himself states he doesn’t believe Otto will target his loved ones, even though he just learned his secret identity.
Tumblr media
Hold them hostage to lure him out? Okay.
Maim or kill them for revenge? He’s just not that sort of guy.
Or at least he wasn’t until this  creepy ass scene from ASM #700. Among other things, he specifically refers to the prospect of sex with MJ as ‘another victory for the Master Planner’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s try coming at this from a different angle then.
If Otto believes himself to be  Peter Parker because he inhabits his body, perhaps he doesn’t regard sleeping with MJ as unethical at all. She is giving her consent to Peter Parker and he is  Peter Parker now.
That’s a rather huge stretch to make about the character considering he actively tried to hide the fact that he was secretly Otto Octavius from so many people in Superior.
Moreover, during ‘Dying Wish’ it was clear (due to mischaracterization) that Otto was doing what he was doing for revenge, that was even partially why he wanted to sleep with MJ (see above). He wanted to ‘have something Peter hadn’t had in a while’ (...ugh...). Furthermore in ASM #700 he was bombarded with Peter’s morality (or some shit like that, I don’t know...) and this convinced him to be a good guy.
But that was seemingly thrown out the window when Superior started as he seemed to just be a bad guy who battled crime to again be superior to Spider-Man. He wasn’t honouring his fallen comrade and didn’t have his moral compass as seemed to be implied in ASM #700 because if he did why was he still trying to rape Mary Jane?
Shit in fact in Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 he’s LAUGHING at Peter’s demise and the fact that he’s gotten away with this. He refers to Spider-Man in the third person as he does this. This event also happened literally the day after ASM #700, so it was less than 24 hours since he had been blasted with Peter Parker’s memories and resolved to be a ‘hero’.
Tumblr media
Not to mention in various issues he clearly refers to himself and Peter as separate entities. In Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 his thoughts drifted to MJ and he called Peter a fool.
Tumblr media
He does the same in Superior #2 where he refers to Peter in the third person.
His dialogue utilizes quotation marks when using Peter’s full name; “Peter Parker”. This demarks how he is making a distinction between himself and the real Peter Parker. He is acknowledging himself as a pretender.
Tumblr media
In Superior #4 internally reprimanded ‘Parker’ for never finishing Grad School. At the same time he negatively compared Peter’s efforts to when he received his own doctorate, referring to himself as ‘I’.
Tumblr media
In Superior #10 he referred to Peter as a separate person, referencing how he expunged him from his mind in the prior issue.
Tumblr media
He also chastises Peter as a ‘reactionary fool’ who allowed ‘his’ enemies to make the first move. Where ‘Parker’ dealt with symptoms he plans on dealing with the disease. He even refers to himself by name as Otto Octavius.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he runs into MJ he wonders what ‘Parker’ would say and gripes that fooling her was easier before he purged ‘his’ (meaning Peter’s) memories.
Tumblr media
In Superior #21 he refers to his “…life as ‘Peter Parker’…”. He’s clearly making a distinction between the real Peter Parker and himself as a pretender.
Tumblr media
In the same issue, when Stunner blames him as Spidey for murdering Doc Ock, it takes Otto a moment to register what she is talking about. He then attempts to reveal the truth to her. He starts by saying “I’m actually…”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These moments when taken with all his other unethical actions in Superior also undermine another defence of Otto’s raptastic efforts in Superior.
This is the idea that ‘he’s changed’ in the interim leading into Superior. Now  his attitude towards women and morality is different so it’s believable for him to act this way.
Let’s ignore how again, Superior Team-Up disproves this. Otto’s actions clearly showcase that he in fact has not changed as a person. He’s not grown or evolved. He just happens to be crime fighting now as a form of ego boosting and to prove himself better than Peter.
More importantly if Otto was going to so noticeably change in his attitudes to women then we should have seen that happen!
You can’t just jump forward and tell readers to just accept a character has had a change of heart and is now open to the idea of fucking rape!
How, when and WHY did he change to be this drastically different predatory creature? This wasn’t like how Aunt May or Norman were different when the former was resurrected and the latter was written by JMS. Those were extrapolations of aspects of those characters that were already there. This was essentially something wholesale new and starkly against how he was previously defined. Its akin to what Slott did to Ben Reilly in ‘Clone Conspiracy’ or to Ashley Kafka when he had her declare someone irredeemable (even though she believed Carnage  was redeemable).
Finally, lets pretend to ignore all of the above.
Let’s say Otto being a rapist would be entirely believable.
That doesn’t mean you should actually DO it!
Doc Ock is a classic goofy mad scientist archetypical villain, even if he was (allegedly) on a redemption tour in this story. Adding something so creepy, disturbing and vile from the real world to his character taints his character. It took him to a bad place where he was peers with the likes of Purple Man and Doctor Light. It makes him practically irredeemable. Maybe a skilled writer on a MAX book could pull off a redemption arc for a rapist or attempted rapist. But not only is Slott not that skilled, but he’s played it for comedy!
Tumblr media
Frankly, unless you have seriously  done your research on this topic you shouldn’t even be touching it.
To touch it so casually for humour  is seriously FUCKED UP!
I don’t even want  this topic really raised in mainline Spider-Man titles period personally but to do it like this?
*gagging noises*
Not to mention it was entirely unnecessary.
Otto had attempted to mass murder half the planet in an arc just the year before Superior. Surely that  is enough fuel for a redemption story, you don’t need to make him a rapist/attempted rapist on top of that.
But no. Gotta milk that crass shock value for all it is worth!
Shit, the topic with MJ was handwaved within one issue!
Fuck Slott.
Fuck Superior.
Fuck everyone who defended this disgusting garbage!
*This also dismantles the myopic idea that an older man who looked like Otto would be jumping at the chance to have sex. That’s another defence I’ve heard. The fact is multiple women found Otto attractive as he was.

HGPC 17 - 21 | Koi to Producer 2 - 6 | Appare 5 - 8 | Fugou Keiji 4 - 6
...only just realised I was missing some tags. They should be there now or soon.
HGPC 17
Why do I get the feeling the Sawaizumi family will be held hostage one day…? (Maybe I’m just being negative?)
The episode title mentions Chiyu by name, so I wonder why the translation didn’t…
Customer service! You can’t get away from it, even in COVID times…! (Impressive!)
Hmm…you can actually read part of the booking for the Smiths in the book if you know the kanji.
I thought the Smiths would speak in English, but they actually speak in fluent Japanese if the word “susume” was any indication.
Ah, Sukoyaka sweet buns! (from the other episode about the festival)
HGPC 18
Don’t burn down your house with scented candles, kids!
Also remember to use your knees when lifting heavy boxes! (<- says a charity store volunteer, who does this stuff on the regular)
These days the mascots usually have a human form. I wonder if this is implying that particular direction…? (I woke up today and was craving a certain oneshot I’d read during my scanlation days…if it is, it would fill that niche nicely.)
I wonder if the kids will recognise this Ashita no Joe parody…?
HGPC 19
“…since you were young?”
Oh! Element of Wind again!
Koi to Producer 2
This almost feels like Victor is assigning a school project to Protag-chan…it’s a bit sad, really.
It’s nice they let Protag-chan have a personality.
It’s fine if you can’t read the katakana, but Gavin’s name is Haku in Japanese, so it throws out the immersion somewhat…also, I know I shouldn’t be complaining – I’m the target audience here – but do these guys look kinda similar or what…? (partially kidding)
High school sweethearts, huh? “Childhood friends” is my favourite angle of a romantic relationship, but it gets so overused by harems it comes around to being boring…!
I-Is this Stand My Heroes…?! (LOL…?)
Can we not with 1st person cam…?
As cute and dorky as this stuff gets…how does Gavin never get found?! Does nobody ever look up in this city?!? (I thought Evolvers were meant to be a secret…?)
GPS tracker? That’s no better than large corporations using your location data…Isn’t that creepy…?
Hold on, when did she get his phone number? You would assume it was before this entire chase after the boy happened, but still…?
LOL, the English on the board.
This anime is gonna cause me some frustration, but it gives the good stuff in roughly equal measure. It seems to omit the fact you interact via phone with your bois for intimacy (in the game).
Koi to Producer 3
LOL, that’s so clearly Gavin…
By googling, you find out Uptown and Queens are in New York.
Ohmygosh! Did the creators know I love the trope where only people with superpowers can move in certain circumstances?!
Uh…his name is Kira in Japanese? Did someone read the katakana wrong?
Pictured: Depressed bishonen eating bad pudding. (…That joke sounds better in my head. I forgot what meme I was meant to be parodying there, but I had a meme in mind.)
Lemme guess…this man (I dunno if it’s one of the previous bishies with an identical face or a new one) is looking for MC-chan. *sigh* Update: Yep, just Victor again. To be honest, I don’t like anyone who calls harsh words “their sign of love” – love should be honest and upfront. That’s how it becomes heartmelting.
Koi to Producer 4
Okay, in order, it seems to be hexadecimals, Javascript (you can tell from the “const”), some kind of profiles which are apparently for human lab rats (which seem to have some kind of nonsense filler text), a DNA model and DNA bases (ACGT).
The text on the screen says something along the lines of this being an official broadcast of this man’s arrest and this man was a genetic researcher. Obviously, if I wanted to put more attention into what it meant, I would, but I won’t sweat the details this time (because it doesn’t seem to impact the plot).
The guy’s name is Minor because minor key (geddit?)…that’s my guess.
I started playing the game due to this anime, if you didn’t know, and I unlocked an expert in ch. 2. I thought he was Minor, but turns out his name is Spine (an older man).
The diary, true to form, contains details about either one case or several cases, two involving children. The bottom of the 1st page says “if it’s fake, I’ll laugh”.
Hey, I once told Crunchyroll I wanted an anime about hacking (so is this a dream come true? I reveal all in the next sentence!). Hackers don’t congregate like this…they’d be too conspicuous, even with the secret hideout!
The code in the top left appears to be…C? I think? (Note they declare “unsigned int”.)
Kiro sometimes reminds me of Masayoshi (SamFlam)…it puts a derpy smile on my face.
*blah blah blah I’m Key* - Wuh…? F*** you, Kiro!!! (There is such a thing as piling too much cool stuff on to a character, y’know – I’m guilty of it in my own writing.)
3684 isn’t a very safe password (says someone who once aspired to be in cybersecurity).
What bugs me is that Simon is a perfectly fine name…it’s just a bit boring. Kiro/Kira I get (a bit), but Lucien/Simon…? *shrugs*
Ohh! Based MAPPA! Thank you for making this adaption look great!
Koi to Producer 5
Oh, I got an SR in the game recently and it has a line like, “Only a fool stays up all night to do others’ work. Victor talks like that a lot…
The sign so obviously says “Renka”, meaning “love flower”. “Loveland” really is a step down from that…
Where’s Gavin’s guest badge…?
“Happiness Noodle Store”…?
“…the end of our first year…”
If this weren’t a Chinese work by origin (or Japanese work by translation), I’m sure Protag-chan would have gone after Gavin, despite being told the contrary.
Kanya = Minor. I’ll take a note of that.
One of the books behind Minor says “Gale Start”…hmm…
That GPS tracker is still unintentionally creepy, IMHO.
Koi to Producer 6
…oh. (dejected) Probably a beach episode or something.
What the actual heck was going on with Lucien…? It’s like he was having a tiny stroke there…
Lucien’s power is listed as “???” in the game. I thought he was an aura-reader when he said “show me your colour”, but that shield thing he did means he might just have various psychic powers…? *shrugs* We’ll find out eventually.
Running in heels is hard…
LOL, that’s so clearly recreating a CG from one of the cards.
This is the 2nd time this has gone pseudo-isekai. As much as I like to joke about it…I fully expect someone to be sent to another world at this point.
I couldn’t possibly see Victor on any kind of game show, come to think of it.
Appare 5
This guy’s middle name is “Rich”! That’s silly!
A boombox from the 19th century…makes sense, somehow.
I only just (?) realised Al has a tiny tie on his usual outfit.
Back to the beginning already…just start!
Appare 6
…I just realised Appare mouths “I got it!” in the OP.
Al Lion (sic…?)
Isn’t Sofia in that train…? Update: She might have been, she might not. Hard to tell when they don’t confirm.
This series seriously could’ve done with a dub…Even with weird hokey Hetalia accents, it would be good stuff.
These bunches of people at designated points…reminds me of the book I was reading while in Japan. The Long Walk by Stephen King (part of a compilation). It still gives me shivers down my spine when I remember it.
This “leave in the middle of the night” thing reminds me of the Amazing Race.
“Valley of Despair” is made-up, but Death Valley exists. It’s one of the hottest places on earth, hence the name.
LOL, Kosame scores himself one (1) prarie dog and two (2) Hototos.
I thought Appare was being inconsiderate at first…but he’s being considerate, in his own way.
Oh! I didn’t realise, but Saito Soma is Al.
Appare 7
“It’s not one plus one, but one times one!” – LOL.
Hybrid engine? In the 1900s? Hmm…
LOL, I think Al just did a hadouken.
This stuff’s like an animated Galaxy Brain meme! It’s amazing!
I managed to successfully predict – without watching ahead – Appare would catch himself with his traps.
Kosame with his hair down…is rare. Not exactly attractive because we have to care about the racers rather than lust after them (and the artstyle actually prevents me from doing so, because it’s deliberately quite cartoony), but it’s rare.
Appare is surprisingly childish…that’s what makes him more than a Sheldon Cooper, I think.
The spelling of the place is actually “Ely”, if Google-sensei is any indication. C’mon, subbers! You’re American (most likely)! Can’t you put in the legwork (or the Google-fu) to discover what place in Nevada this is?!
Subbers make characters say “shit” a lot in this show, hmm? (contemplative)
Now this evil guy here *points to screen*…that’s hair I like.
Appare 8
I just love this OP…don’t you?
I like how the steam/gas boat/car has Chinese numerals on its dial.
Kosame means “small rain”, so “heavy rain” is obviously to contrast that.
The Hototo joke never gets old.
I thought I just saw someone leave the saloon…
Nice hair + terrible face = bad equation.
I can almost imagine the wee-oo-wee-oo-ooooooo…wah-wah-wahhh…(You know the one sound snippet, right? The one theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - or whatever movie it is – that maybe involves a tumbleweed rolling across the screen, and then a huge shootout? If you don’t know it, play a sample on this Wikipedia page!) playing in the background.
It’s convenient the prarie dog didn’t appear when Hototo (old) had his revenge spree.
I noticed there’s a bit of a mark under Kosame’s left eye…it suggests that he’s been crying (or maybe it shows tiredness from the race…?), but it’s not that noticeable.
So that’s the real Gil…and tose were his henchmen that threatened to hang everyone bar Kosame. Got it.
(notes to self) So, for charting a course with Appare Ranman!, it’s Los Angeles -> Death Valley -> Ely -> Denver -> ??? -> New York. Got it.
Fugou Keiji 4
“Daisuke-sama” isn’t “Lord Daisuke”, it would be “Sir Daisuke”, I think…but “lord” has a proper translation in Japanese.
The truck has a Shinagawa licence plate. Anime really does like Shinagawa, huh? (Based on ID: INVADED and this.)
I think it’ll be interesting to see Kambe handle this without HEUSC.
The board for Sanchome (which is equivalent to a suburb…or a county, I guess?) has posters saying stuff like “take your dog poop home” and “let’s protect the environment!” (technically, it says “let’s protect the region/area!”, but that doesn’t translate right. There’s even a flea market. Still, those posters don’t have any big hints…not that I know of so far.
I kind of forgot that dude was the gardener for Kambe’s house…er, mansion.
I noticed a poster in the kouban says haru (spring) on it. That’s probably the same one that Haru’s name is signified by, assuming that’s not in combo with another character or few.
Oh great…the sister is an overbearing one.
Ahh…he doesn’t like natto. So that’s the problem. Daisuke is childish (like Appare)…Note I don’t like natto either, but I wouldn’t run away from home (or similar) because I was fed natto.
I noticed Kambe uses shinseki (which doesn’t refer to close family). “Relative” is a correct translation of that word, I just wanted to check that word was the right one for the context.
There’s a green tea bottle by the sink…I don’t think I’d mistake that shade of green for anything else.
LOL, I didn’t think we’d actually get to see Kambe with his hair “down”, so to speak. It’s…an interesting look, for sure.
Oh my gosh! It cost him (Haru) $15!!! (LOL, cheapskate…says the cheapskate…*suddenly droops and stops laughing*) Update: Sorry about the sudden downer there. I was having what the kids these days call a “woke moment”…at least, I think that’s how they use that term.
…I’d watch that crime drama. It’s funny.
Just realised Kato has an older model of phone than Kambe does.
This episode was kinda like a Tokyo Sonata kind of thing, huh? The sensational in the middle of the not-so-sensational…”sensational” for this show, anyway.
Those kids look like the ones from Erased.
*lightbulb goes off in brain* What if the dog went to Kambe’s…?
Can Suzue actually hear HEUSC while Kambe is using it…? $2.46 though…that is cheap, in comparison to the ham.
This was the cheapest episode so far (about $550)…probably because it was an insight into Kato’s life, more than Kambe’s.
Fugou Keiji 5
The flag seems to be based on Cameroon’s (which is in Africa, not America) and the “Arita Kinen” seems to refer to Arima Kinen, meaning this episode is set around Christmas-ish. Credit goes to Kambe Zaibatsu on this show.
I-It’s a Humvee!
Polyadoll (sic)…?
The Poliador guy speaks perfect Japanese…(?)
The star! It’s a key thingy!
I thought Kamei was the 1st Division dude with the reddish hair. Turns out it was the blonde…? Update: Redhead is Hoshino.
Ummmmmm…he was reading porn…? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh…okayyyyyyyyyyyyy…
…oh, the costs for Kambe’s tuxedo are on there. So’s the cost for repairing the bike Suzue rode.
Fugou Keiji 6
I never knew there were so many money proverbs to be used as episode titles…
What is Kambe doing with his hands…? He’s not even using the computer.
Imura seems to use a Windows 10 with Cortana on the taskbar.
HGPC 20
What’s with all the Naruto running this episode…?
HGPC 21

“Shel’ter” #52 Spring 2020 - Stray Kids Interview
Introducing Stray Kids, the group the world is closely watching
They entered 2020 with the start of their world tour. They began their new year promising their big leap, and with that burning power, "Stray Kids” debuted in Japan. Their outstanding vocal and dance skills. And, their genius producing skills. The world did not miss the group that will take over the next generation of K-pop.
Bang Chan
BC: I’m the leader, Bang Chan. My appeal point is... umm, what is it?
LK: His physical is crazy.
BC: Ah, really... Thank you!
Along with his dance skills which uses his physical strength, he is in charge of vocal, rap, and producing, the Stray Kids’ brain.
Felix
FX: Hello, I’m Felix. My charming point is my freckles.
The members say “the most pure!”. From Stay’s he is called as the “pollution free boy” as he is so pure. The deep voice he omits which cannot be imagined from his sweet visuals are also one of his charming points.
Han
HN: I’m Han in charge of rap. My appeal point is, do yo know the animal called the quokka? My face looks like it!
His comforting high tone voice is his special feature. A multiplayer who is capable of rap, vocal, as well as creating music.
I.N.
IN: I’m the youngest makne, I.N.
Q. Is he the younger brother character?
Members: Not at all!
HN: I.N. is just so cute, that we pour all our love to him. I love you !
He is the youngest member, but as a man from Busan, he is also very diligent. He’s also very skilled at singing trot!
Q. It is your first time being on Shel’ter, but how was the photoshoot?
SM: The outfits were Disney themed, so it felt like I went back to my childhood. Looking at the clothes made me feel happy.
HJ: We took photos from a new angle today, so I’m excited to see how it turns out.
LK: I also did some poses that I’ve never done before, so I wonder how it’ll turn out.
Q. Please look forward to it! What kind of fashion are you normally into?
LK: (Energetically) Training pants!
Members: Hahaha!
IN: It differs at the time, but I always want to wear cute outfits.
Q. Who is the fashionista in the group?
LK: (Again, with a lot of energy and raising his arm) Me!
BC: No, thats a lie.
LK: Yes...it’s a lie haha.
BC: Ahh, Han has great taste
HJ: It’s always “too much”!
HN: To explain the difference in fashion taste between the members and I, the members are dressing in the 21st century fashion, and I’m dressing in the 22nd century fashion!
Q. That’s super advanced!
HN: Yes, exactly haha.
LK: His fashion today was shocking as well... he was wearing wearing both leopard and checkered print! But apparently, those were pyjamas...
Members: Hahaha!
Q. Who takes care of beauty the most?
HJ: (Looking at the other members) Probably, its I.N. right? He takes care of his skin a lot.
IN: I actually research on the newest beauty news, and try new ways to care for my skin as well. Oh, and I really like to change my hairstyle, and I have done a curly perm as well. I think I’ve done everything besides a bald head!
Q. According to the members, which hairstyle suited him the most?
HJ: Sakamori! (hairstyle when the top is tied and it looks like a water fountain)
BC: That I.N. was really cute!
IN: Hahaha!
Q. Even besides fashion and beauty, is there an item that you need for you to get hyper?
HJ: Bracelets! I always stack a couple.
IN: For me its rings. I always wear at least one everyday.
SM: I need white sneakers to complete my style!
FX: I don’t really have a lot preferences in terms of fashion, but I like bags!
CB: Ah, bags for me too!
Lee Know
LK: I’m Lee Know. My charming point is my cute face.
BC: Thats a lie. (Sees LK looking at him with puppy eyes) Its a joke!
In contrast with his perfect visuals, his dynamic dance moves are charming. He is also quite cheeky during interviews.
Seungmin
SM: Nice to meet you, I’m Seungmin. I’m in charge of vocals, so my charming point is my cool voice.
Although he is the lead vocalist, his dance moves that showcases his sports ability cannot go missed. He is also great at aegyo.
HN: I need my phone to get hyper...
LK: Phone! Me too!
BC: I always have a lot of things with me so there are a lot of things I need, but if I have to choose one, it’ll be my computer which I make songs with.
--- Of course, because leader Bang Chan along with rapper Changbin and Han are part of 3RACHA, the unit which creates all of Stray Kids’ songs.
--- If you directly translate Stray Kids, it becomes “Kids that are Stray”, not to be seized by chosen standards, and to demonstrate the uniqueness and freedom. The album that such group has decided to debut in Japan with, “SKZ2020″ also happens to be their best album as well.
Q. What kind of album is it?
BC: The albums and and singles we’ve released so far are songs that define our group name and have a lot songs with different colours, so we really focused on making the setlist to show who we are. Out of all songs, the songs such as “Levanter”, “Double Knot”, and “My Pace” are songs that easily showcases our message, and we sang them in Japanese. Through these songs, we hope we can create a good time at concerts. Okay, clap your hands!
Members: (Clapping) Waaaah!
Q. Anything you payed attention to when singing in Japanese?
HJ: I rap, but I actually found it easier to do so in Japanese. In Korean, we have a thing called patchim and there isn’t as much in Japanese so I think it was easier. As it was my first time recording in Japanese, so there was some difficulty, but it feel a little strange.
Q. What it easy to express emotions as well?
HJ: I tried really hard when we recorded in Korean, so those feelings existed as a base. So when I sang it in Japanese, I thought of upgrading those emotions and expressing that.
Changbin
CB: I’m Changbin. My charm point is my gap! (t/n: Gap refers to difference in someone’s appearance and personality)
As the main rapper, he is cool and performs his dark rap on stage, but off stage, he is cheeky and know for his cute character.
Q. Which song in SKZ2020 do you have special feelings for?
LK: Hellevator which implies our beginning is the perfect song for our Japan debut as well.
CB: The Japanese version of My Pace is a energetic and has a really good beat to it. Please listen to it, as it is a song I think that makes you think of running across the stage with our fans.
BC: Changbin says such good things! He’s cool!
SM: I remember singing I am YOU which everyone, so I have good memories
HN: I like Astronaut, as it is a song that makes you think of how adventurous it is, the more you listen to it. When you listen to it when you’re feeling down, it helps you feel better.
IN: My favourite song is MIROH. I love the melody!
FX: MIROH for me too! Its a song that allows me to be happy, and it is a song that gets STAY hyped as well, so I have good memories!
BC: Um... I like all songs so its hard to pick just one... for example, Grow Up is a song we always sing on stage with STAY, so I want to sing it in Japan as well!
HJ: Ahhh, its so hard to choose... As we are given the opportunity to debut in Japan, we would like to do many concerts in Japan. Through out music, I would like to communicate with the Japanese STAY’s, maybe with events such as street performances.
Hyunjin
HJ: I’m Hyunjin. I’m in charge of dance. My cool visuals are my charming point haha.
Because of his sweet face, he had many fans even before his debut! Utilising his tall frame, his sexy dance is charming.

Chernobyl is the only show who gives us a wide variety of beautiful (shipable) persons, from nerd-twink Dmitri to pure-twink Leonid.
Do I have to make a list of Chernobyl’s badass yummy tragic shippable men?
Oh well. I’ll make a list of Chernobyl’s badass yummy tragic shippable men.
Because I’ve never seen a show with SO MANY badass yummy tragic shippable men in such few episodes. And some of them had only one memorable line. One. Line.
Do I start with Dyatlov? Watch me start with Dyatlov.
Tumblr media
I remember… he was the second thing that impressed me when I watched ep 1 (the first was Valery leaving many bowls to his cat and committing suicide right after. I had to re-watch the bowl scene.) I was so struck by his guy-next-door looks, I was like “what the hell am I looking at, why does he look so familiar? Why does he not look like… an actor?” And then the detached way he’d say “Akimov…” as his voice trailed off, a voice so cold yet calm and mesmerizing. I’ve never seen such a realistic “villain” before and, just to play the devil’s advocate here, it still kinda bugs me that Mazin talks about him as this super nasty irredeemable villain. I have the impression that even in the recent podcast he talks as if HBO Dyatlov and the real Dyatlov are one and the same. Lack of time to explain himself maybe? Jared starts poking into that with his mention of an excerpt in the script of the court scene where we were meant to feel some compassion for Dyatlov (34:55) (his “history and motivations”). That part was omitted in the script btw, but if anyone has seen it…
And of course there’s the deleted scene here. That we will probably never see.
Tumblr media
I do understand that an auteur has to support his choices no matter what, and Mazin’s choice is Dyatlov = villain. But I do believe he is kinda absolute with some things, conveniently overseeing them, even saying that he didn’t give Jared any jokes because “Legasov wasn’t funny” (46:32) .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wut? 1:14
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If he had said “I didn’t write Legasov as funny” he would have kinda owned it but the use of the past tense (”wasn’t”) implies that he meant the real Legasov. Same goes for Dyatlov I guess.
Akimov.
Tumblr media
His relationship with Toptunov. Enough said.
Tumblr media
Akimov wears a wedding ring and that feeds lots of “forbidden relationship” fics and I love it.
On to Toptunov. Yeah. Twinkest twink I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media
And I mean these guys are on fire, and we had to watch the very last episode to find out.
Tumblr media
Steamy Toptumov fics? Bring them my way.
Then we have Vasily.
Thank god I hadn’t seen The Terror before Chernobyl so I watched Adam Nagaitis’ Igantenko with pure eyes.
Tumblr media
To this day it hurts to watch his scenes. All of them. And it’s even worse to read his story in “Chernobyl prayer”. Soooooo much worse. Not only because it’s a true story but because his wife’s description makes you feel the pain. How a decaying body can suffer, and the people taking care of it.
I understand some fans were kinda bummed that the show didn’t dig deeper into his and Lyusya’s love story. Makes sense. But to me they’re the definition of tragic puppy love and it hurts as it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then my beloved Sitnikov with his exasperated, confident “Follow me”. I mean.
Tumblr media
Another ring-bearer that one.
Tumblr media
Aaaaaah look at that handsome confident face marry meeeeeeee.
Bryukhanov. Another guy-next-door. Had me staring at the screen, listening to his every-day high-pitched husky voice and I was like “Did that guy jump right out of that seaside pastry shop where I was with my dad  back in the summer of 1985?”. Did they use a time machine to bring him to the show or something?
Tumblr media
And now I’m finding out he has a fan base. Fuck yeah.
Fomin. Ok I legit knew that guy but I couldn’t put a name on his face
Tumblr media
He was James Potter. ^^ And oh, he has worked before with Stellan and Emily in Breaking the waves. Somehow you feel compelled to trust that face, never mind if in “Chernobyl” he was cowardly and scared as a rat. The way he yelled “It was Dyat-lov!…” as they took him away, so beautiful, so dramatic.
And now, on to the main course.
DMITRI.
Oh my paws and whiskers.
Tumblr media
He cares about Ulana SO MUCH that he follows her around on a Saturday like a puppy. Bringing her coffee and who knows what else.
He even jokes about her dedication. But oh look, he’s dedicated too.
Tumblr media
Comrade, I don’t wanna say it out loud but I’m crushing on you.
Tumblr media
You can see Ulana is almost afraid to look into his eyes when she asks him what he’s doing there. She knows.
But of course there are so many things keeping them apart. There’s the age difference - people would call her names even if they wouldn’t call Dmitri the same names if their ages were reversed. There’s their professional relationship that shouldn’t be compromised. There’s that ring on her finger that Dmitri doesn’t know if it’s a wedding ring, an engagement ring, or an ex-lover’s present. Does she even have eyes for him? Dmitri doesn’t know.
Even meatier stuff.
PIKALOV.
*screaming*
Wanna love a character because of a single line and the way he delivers it? Yeah, Pikalov is your man.
Tumblr media
The steady decisive pause before his statement. The honour, the nobility, the self-sacrifice. If you didn’t know by then that “Chernobyl” was going to be the show with the biggest number of small but honourable characters, you got your first hint with Pikalov.
Another overlooked but honourable character. Shchadov.
Tumblr media
And he has lots of power bottom potential.
Alrightz. Fan favourite time. I don’t even have to go into details. Glukhov.
Tumblr media
Thank you, Mr Ferns, for being the only character in the show to deliver both noble heroic lines as well as eye candy.
Next: TARAKANOOOOOOOOOV.
Tumblr media
Big dick energy right there. His resigned pauses between sentences, the way he sucks in the smoke, his authority as he greets each and every soldier. Stunning.
Pavel.  *cries* 3
Tumblr media
If you swear to never watch the dog scenes again there is so much shippy potential in that one. Pacho prompts, here I come!!
Bacho, his war code of honour and his “I’m happy every day”.
Tumblr media
You *know* he’s not happy but it doesn’t matter. What matters is how he’s trying to convince everyone else that he is. His perseverance. There’s a war to be won, even if he knows he’s losing.
Last but not least: Stepashin. Give me Roose Bolton in a minor courtroom role anytime, ANYTIME.
Tumblr media
Honourable mention to Charkov because yeah, you know me. Because I just can’t get over this man.
Also C-V-B. Also dub con. Don’t judge me.

Girl, Woman, Other. Bernadine Evaristo.
This review is also featured here on Goodreads.
Girl, Woman, Other sees Bernadine Evaristo take us through the ever-changing landscape of what it means to be just that: a girl, a woman, other. With the added twist that all of her characters are also black. Evaristo has a fantastic talent for creating characters that appear to leap out of the page and start gesticulating at you, reprimanding you for your totally not woke political opinions. She makes some bold stylistic choices here, choosing to omit speech marks and full stops from her prose. Whilst this is initially rather disconcerting, it adds a beautiful layer of poeticism to her writing and I found myself wanting to experiment myself with a lack of speech marks in my own writing. This novel has a lot going for it; the prose is engaging; I was able to see a spectrum of black female/other lives in one place in a way I have never seen before. From my perspective, while I don’t feel Evaristo necessarily raised a lot of issues beyond the obvious (racism), I was taken out of my comfort zone as I would not usually ever reach for a narrative about someone born long before myself (I usually find this very boring). However, Evaristo narrates a striking picture not only of how far we have come as a society and a people, but also how far we still have to go in terms of tackling societal inequalities. A novel lacking much in the way of plot, Girl, Woman, Other. is necessarily character driven, and most of Evaristo’s characters are eccentric, whimsical fusspots with difficult backstories. Of these, my favourites are Amma, Morgan, Hattie and Shirley. For me, these characters were most interesting because they represented something I had never before interacted with in a contemporary narrative. Amma is a polyamorous, middle-aged, lesbian playwright, Morgan a gender-free trans activist, Hattie a weathered old battleaxe living on the border of Scotland and Shirley a fastidious, cripplingly boring schoolteacher (while this does not sound appealing on the surface, it is in essence her dullness that makes Shirley so interesting). Evaristo takes us through their lives, what led them to become the people they are, their personal struggles and failures, their drives and motivators. While all of these women (and other) are black, this does not then imply uniformity of experience; Hattie had a enormously different time of growing up near Newcastle in the 1940s to Shirley, who was raised in the heart of Peckham thirty years later. Especially of import to me was Morgan, who shed light on what it means to be trans and non-dysphoric, something I had never really been able to comprehend before. For me, the release of this novel as a collection of short stories represents the growing intersections and intricacies of being a black woman in the UK; a well-written and welcome exploration. The satisfying conclusion of the novel ties all of the characters together whilst also being emotional enough to make me cry myself to sleep. I highly recommend reading it no matter your background. That being said, while I think that this is a revolutionary novel, there were some things that did not really work for me. I believe that Evaristo has much more success writing older characters than her younger ones, who lay a little flat for me. The sections from Amma’s daughter Yazz’s point of view vexed me; while she is my age, to me she seemed excessively immature, annoying and cringey running around calling her group of friends squad and carrying out her own little disempowerment Olympics. The friends in question also appeared to have little chemistry and it broke my suspension of disbelief to be wondering how all of these girls that did not seem to like each other too much or have very much in common wanted to spend so much time with each other. While Yazz discusses Waris, her black Muslim friend, at length, I do feel that her role in the novel was a little tokenistic as Evaristo never gives her the voice for her own narrative. I find her being the only black Muslim woman mentioned at all very disappointing, especially considering the large proportion of black women in the UK that follow Islam. Personally, I find this to be yet another way that black Muslim women are silenced in two different communities that should be holding them up. Evaristo clearly wants to give Waris personality; the amount of times she mentions her wearing a sequined hijab in the conclusion of the novel was almost irritating. For me this comes across as tokenistic because some of the narrative voices were admittedly very unmemorable and even boring, all the while we are being told that Waris is a dynamic character yet she is never given expository opportunity to express this herself. I would have loved to read more about what made Waris, a defiant black Muslim woman from Wolverhampton, who she was, but that just didn’t seem to be on the cards here.

Loki - mythology or mcga, your choice
Tumblr media
Even though some will be the same cause like,, even though they’re not the same character, they’re the same character lol
-Myth-
Sexuality Headcanon: Pansexual
Gender Headcanon: Genderfluid (Fluctuates between binary and nonbinary genders)
A ship I have with said character: Loki X Sigyn of course
A BROTP I have with said character: Loki and Thor Best Bros 5Ever. Skadi is also a good friend of Loki’s but she acts like she can’t stand him
A NOTP I have with said character: Nothing is impossible for Loki but if I had to choose someone who would never succumb to his charm in any way I’d say,, Heimdall
A random headcanon:Every time I imagine his first meeting with Sigyn I end up with a cover of “Once Upon A Dream” from Sleeping Beauty lmao
General Opinion over said character: I’ve said and implied repeatedly on here that Loki is my favourite character in the Norse myths, and he is my favourite for so many reasons.        1) He’s just,, a Bastard™ and I love bastard characters. I’ve seen many people, specifically on here, who love him for the same reason. Like,, he’s a bastard but he’s Our Bastard™     2) He’s the one who keeps the plot of the myths going in many, many cases. 3) He’s extremely versatile: He helps as much as he inconveniences, his story has as much silliness as it has tragedy. 4) I‘ve come to see him as the patron god(ess)/deity of the LGBT+/Queer community because of his explicit gender fluidity/nonconformity (which is also the reason I feel so connected to him). And just,,, I love him ok? ok
-MCGA- //HHOOO boy get ready I have so many feelings about this bitch//
Sexuality Headcanon: Pansexual
Gender Headcanon: Genderfluid (Fluctuates between binary and nonbinary genders)
A ship I have with said character: If both of their characterizations hadn’t been completely botched in the second book I’d say Loki X Sigyn again but,, the verbal abuse + the fact that she has 0,001% of a personality just ain’t it chief (And it ain’t it in many ways, because Sigyn is actually the goddess of fidelity, meaning she stays beside Loki out of her own will, not intimidation or anything else. She could leave if she wanted to, and Loki knows this because despite everything, he’s not dumb. He wouldn’t treat his only chance at omitting most of his torture + staying sane like that.)                                                     On a lighter note, an IRL friend of mine and I have this inside joke “shipping” him with Randolph lmao (Because let’s face it,, the amount of homoerotic undertones there is Something Else re: the epilogue -the fact that he calls him “my dear friend”, which is in itself, a very Gay form of address to me for some reason, and later on in the series “Randy” like,, back at it again with the pet names. Loki has more chemistry with Randolph than with his own wife through the series lmao. I know it’s meant to be read as “oh look what an evil bitch he is” but,, we read it our own way lol)
A BROTP I have with said character: Again, him and Thor. Because Thor said he missed Loki and he seems to be the only one of the Aesir to actually have some sympathy left for him. Plus I’m sure Loki misses Thor too. Also, again, he and Skadi tbh. Even if Skadi speaks negatively of him when Magnus and co. are staying at her palace,, I mean she’s a giantess, and most if not all giants Magnus has encountered have lied to him for some reason so,, I wouldn’t be surprised if she did too. I have no proof but I have no doubts either.
A NOTP I have with said character: Again, there are no NOTPs that come to mind with him. I’d say Heimdall again. And any of the Empty Cups at that
A random headcanon: He actually has a heart, and agreed to help Randolph reunite with his family because he saw his own family’s tragedy in them. Also, back to Sigyn, I refuse to accept she has actually been abused to the point of not talking. And, being married to a trickster, she probably is one too. What I’m trying to say here is the “Oh my poor wife hasn’t spoken for millennia” or whatever was actually a facade Loki and Sigyn both set up so Magnus and co. and possibly the gods wouldn’t suspect a thing from Sigyn, who is actually part of the threat Loki poses (And as I said in a previous post about my headcanons, actually planned Ragnarok along with him) (I know, what a reach lmao)
General Opinion over said character: My opinion on him obviously changed as I read the books. At first, I saw my favourite character from the myths being a charming, albeit ominous ally to the protagonist and I loved that. But then he became a villain. A charming villain nonetheless. He’s a horrible person (At least towards Magnus and Co.) but an amazing villain. And I obviously still love him even after finishing the series. The only complaints I have are about his characterization (because I refuse to believe he’s actually a cold-hearted bitch who verbally abuses his wife) (I know I’m making a lot of reaches here but there are things I just *refuse* to believe. And that’s what headcanons are for, kids!)

please tell me who sans is (i only know that he is naked sometimes) and whats happening in the video game world i know 0 things
LORD I AM SO SORRY FOR YOU
okay.. how do I condense this down... stick w me
basically undertale was an indie video game released in 2015. it had a really unique and funny cast of characters and it was praised for its use of gameplay mechanics and subversion of RPG tropes. (x)
The game gained massive traction around this time, with its peak being January-ish 2016. I myself was a HUGE fan of the game, it was a proper hyperfixation for me. (my introduction to tumblr was under the name sansy-girl, so.)
In the game, depending on your actions, you can choose the route your character takes. For example, to get the “true pacifist” ending or the “real” ending, you have to never harm anyone during your journey and make friends with everyone. Even one person being omitted will ruin your ending and give you a neutral ending. However, you could take a “genocide” route, where you kill everyone you come across (It’s also known as the No Mercy route, if that helps..)
This route is notoriously difficult and extremely emotional. The game does not take you killing the characters lightly, and once you’ve finished this ending, your game file is permanently destroyed and all future endings will result in a fourth wall breaking moment where a character will condemn you for your actions in the genocide route.
This is where Sans comes in. Sans, in the pacifist route, is a seemingly harmless skeleton who loves puns. He’s fiercely protective of his little brother, and is generally a funny character. However, he oftentimes breaks the fourth wall and can be genuinely creepy.
In the genocide route, he is one the final bosses and is EXTREMELY difficult to beat. This is where megalovania (x)  comes in, as that’s his theme for his boss battle.
He, alongside another character, are aware they’re in a video game, and it’s implied that he knows whenever you reset his world.
Anyways, after the game’s release, he became a fan favourite character, mine included.
It got to the stage of people creating “sans skeleton ocs” with blogs gaining massive traction and storyline based ask blogs on these OCs. (x) Seriously, there was so many. Anyone who was anyone had an Undertale AU.
here’s one of mine, because I have no shame (the taller skeleton. yes. he was shipped w another version of sans. (art wasn’t by me! I don’t wanna link their blog bc they r probably hella embarrassed too but if u really wanna know just ask)
Tumblr media
Because this happens to every fandom, soon people were drawing NSFW art (under the name of Undertail) of all the characters, especially sans. I’m unlucky enough to have seen some of this art and please, for the love of god, don’t look it up.
Sans slowly became of sort of.. meme? after this? sans had an infamous line saying “do you wanna have a bad time?” and that was certainly memed to death (x) (x)
It’s easy to lose track of sans from here. Some point last year someone posted the “fingers in his ass” video (x) and he was a meme on TikTok for a while too.
If you’re still... confused about sans I reckon reading this would be helpful: (x) actually I should have just linked that at the start cuz does a much better job explaining than I ever will LMAO
if you’re still reading I’m so sorry

New to fandom, just caught up, and falling down the rabbit hole of fabulous meta posts. Currently descending into the Hell that is your #Pining not Praying tag. I'm going to have to do a s9-10 rewatch or perhaps will stumble upon meta detailing this as I go along, but do you think its possible that the Mark of Cain blocked the longing/praying from Dean to Cas? That perhaps a part of Cas' descent into depression in s9-10 was he couldn't hear/feel how much Dean really did feel/long/prayer for him?
Oooh no, I hope you’re okay XD
Since there isn’t really any comment on how much Cas does and doesn’t feel (although I suppose if you’re wandering through that tag you’ve possibly seen the comparisons to the Rit Zien in 9x06, who could feel pain *as if it were a prayer* and use it as a GPS…) basically anything we say about it is just headcanon. But I think that was a pretty common thought at the time, or at least that while Dean had the Mark he was less inclined to feel longing towards Cas… It was mostly used as an angsty fan fic device to sort of describe Dean having bad radio reception for Cas. Although if you assume the first part that the pining thing is a thing, then assuming at the very least that’s a good metaphor for their relationship at that time. >.> There are only a few times implying that there’s a constant connection between Dean and Cas, or at least an exploitable thread of worry… If you get deep end in that tag you’ll find all the stuff about 11x21 and how it seemed to use the connection as an actual main plot mechanic. Which I’ve taken as confirmation that Cas maybe does feel the connection a lot of the time when Dean is worried about him (and whether he means to or not, 10x10′s dialogue confirms that Dean spamming Cas’s inbox with messages through season 12 presumably also was spamming his internal inbox :P)
Basically I don’t think we’ll ever get a statement on it unless they really are reading our blogs looking for what we think is actually important and devote serious time to explaining it AND confirming it’s an ongoing mechanic that pretty much exclusively happens between Dean and Cas, and like Cas and Sam or Claire once each >.> Idk if it’s at the back of my queue or just posted but there’s a funny post by @thejabberwock showing 2 times Cas popped up and just rolled ahead chatting to Dean, paused and looked around, and asked where Sam was :P It’s just kind of a side effect of all the character dynamic stuff Cas and Dean collected, where because they interacted almost exclusively together for the start of Cas’s time on the show, they have all these weird couple things that they do now, in terms of repeated character interaction tropes >.>
My favourite recent use of this is in 12x10 where Dean was trying to call Cas, and Ishim had stolen Cas’s phone, and right on the next scene Cas suddenly felt like getting his phone out and looking for it, tipped off by Dean trying to reach out to him. Which means Yockey may know and have been exploiting it to explain why Cas wasn’t answering his phone… Depends on if he turned that detail up while learning the show in order to write it, or if this is something in their guide book on how to write all this stuff. :P It does sort of reassure me that it’s just a part of the whole bigger picture now, even if it’s mostly useless and they still omit things like the Winchesters praying to Cas when they’re captured and could really do with some help. I think the only way to explain them not doing it in 12x09 was that they had no clue about the GPS part of it, and that there must be a finite range if you’re not actually praying directly >.>

Jordan’s first novel was written in the late 70s and sold twice, but never actually published until now. It’s hard to judge what I would have thought of it if it had been the first book of his that I’d read.
And I have no idea whether or not I’d recommend this.
Since The Wheel of Time is one of my favourite series -- something I’ve spent a lot of time rereading and analysing -- what I found fascinating about Warrior of the Altaii were the differences and similarities between it and WOT. In terms of the protagonist, prose and plot, it feels very different: its first-person narrator is a warrior and leader, already fully grown into his adult roles; the story revolves around why and how the nomadic Altaii try to take a city; and it’s all over by page 350.
But many of the worldbuilding elements are variations on things which are also in WOT: interactions between people from very different cultures, nomadic tribes living in a harsh landscape, ruling queens, a city that’s never been taken, magic that’s only done by women, travellers from a different world, detailed military strategies, matter-of-fact nudity for prisoners and magic rituals, corporal punishment, implied off-screen sexual assault… (That last one was unnecessary, ugh. At least WOT does a better job of acknowledging the horror and trauma of assault, and it’s also a much smaller percentage of the whole story.)
The Altaii are like proto-Aiel: they live on the Plains, not in the Waste, and they have horses and swords but also they have ideas about honour, humour, pain and death which are very Aiel-ish; the story ends with them facing changes as aspects of their lifestyle become no longer important or relevant. (Oh! And there’s a bit about an unborn baby who was fathered by an Altaii man but will be raised by non-Altaii parents. I would like to take this moment to say how relieved I am that Rand did not have this as his parents backstory.)  There’s also a character who was a bit proto-Moiraine and another who was a bit proto-Elaida -- and not just because their names begin with M and E respectively.
If I hadn’t read WOT, I would have still found the worldbuilding interesting but probably not enough to make up for not really connecting with any of the characters.  There are some very tense sequences, but other scenes, like the battles, failed to captivate me because I wasn’t invested in anyone’s survival.
Wulfgar is an oddly emotionless protagonist. That sort of thing can be really effective if a character then changes, or else if it becomes apparent that their lack of emotion is just a mask. But that’s not the case here, and it meant I found Wulfgar a hard character to get to know.
Jordan’s women are interesting -- they have different personalities and motives and types of power. They have the potential to be nuanced characters but are just not given enough space. I think I would have liked this story a lot more if it had been from Elspeth’s perspective.
Harriet’s introduction and the copyright page both mention a map. There was no map in the book I borrowed from the library.
I've seen this book in a bookshop on two occasions this week and each time forgot to check whether those copies had maps or not, so I don’t know if the map was omitted for the paperback Pan Macmillan printing or if there was just an error with the book I read. (I have encountered random glitches in books before but I suspect it’s the former.)
I had a grand plan of liveblogging this but quickly gave up. The only photo I have a caption for is the second one:
An oddly stilted greeting between two men who are supposedly close… it reads more to me as a disconnect between tone and content rather than “our culture is different!” (which, knowing Jordan, is very likely what he was aiming for). OR MAYBE I’M BEING TOO HYPER CRITICAL FOR PAGE TWO and should shut up and keep reading…

Boxing day sales hit the internet earlier than christmas day
Tumblr media
january sales? The internet bargain hunt is already on! Stores bring ahead income as thousands and thousands of consumers forget about the festivities to seize a deal hundreds of thousands of britons will hunt for on-line deals nowadays as internet stores pass ahead traditional boxing day sales fears of lacking out on cut-charge deals imply many will dismiss christmas day traditions inclusive of a turkey dinner internet purchasing on christmas day is predicted to be up via eleven in step with cent on last 12 months to a new excessive of £728million
by way of sean poulter for the day by day mail
Tumblr media
tens of millions of britons will hunt for on-line deals nowadays as net shops circulate the traditional boxing day sales ahead. Many will even disrupt their christmas day celebrations in the stampede for discounts of extra than 70 according to cent. Fears of lacking a reduce-fee deal will pressure the net shopping frenzy, which has already captured a report percentage of festive spending on the rate of the high road. So-referred to as ‘bargain anxiety’ is pushing apart traditions like spending time with the circle of relatives, going to church, taking part in a turkey dinner or looking the queen’s speech. Scroll down for video

Maximum retailers are selling widespread fee cuts of fifty in step with cent although some are going to 70 according to cent and higher on person gadgets. The income stampede comes as figures from the workplace for national statistics screen consumer spending rose to a report £278. 2billion within the three months to september – three in line with cent higher than the same period last yr. Experts say the financial healing, reduced petrol charges, low unemployment and rock-backside interest quotes have boosted consumer self assurance. The perfume consists of delicate freesia, peach blossom, with a base of vanilla, white need to and sandalwood. Historically, christmas eve changed into the time while panicking men could be seen racing round department shops snatching up gifts. However the upward thrust of internet shopping has changed our habits. Amazon even offers identical-day transport services in some areas – sometimes within the hour. But for the excessive road it’s been awful news, with bricks and mortar investors suffering a pointy fall in customers in recent weeks. Yesterday, the amusement store recreation issued a profit warning and style chain bonmarché has already finished the same. Spending on visa cards is concept to have hit a height of £1. 3billion between 1pm and 2pm the day gone by whilst three. 2 million transactions came about. Why such a lot of families fall out once they get collectively
Tumblr media
why households combat at christmas has been explained through a scientist – and she has even give you a call for the phenomenon… hypercopresence. Professor melanie sales space- butterfield stated conflicts flare while family contributors are pressured to live at close quarters having spent all yr aside. Over christmas they have to percentage the equal house, the equal toilet and put up with young youngsters stampeding across the place. Family members become cranky as their autonomy is taken away through a tight schedule of walks, meals and video games. Professor booth- butterfield, a communications expert at virginia university, stated rows happened when human beings attempted to ‘strike out’ to reclaim their independence – and that hypercopresence happened when you get what she called a ‘big dose of own family straight away’. Professor booth-butterfield stated it became like a long-distance courting but in place of a lover coming domestic, you spend christmas with own family. She stated: ‘when you are in a relationship you anticipate to be together a number of the time. You don’t tend to expect to be together 24/7. Hypercopresence takes place when matters are very controlled and scheduled.’
Tumblr media
professor sales space-butterfield put it right down to the ‘abcs’ – alcohol, lavatories and kids. The extra people and the smaller the residence, the extra the stress. Supply to charity rather than to buddies? They might not thank you
within the persistent struggle to consider unique present ideas, it’s become commonplace to present a donation to charity in place of a gift at christmas. However doing so may want to harm a friendship, lecturers warn. Whilst it could seem a great manner to avoid buying some thing in order to most effective come to be inside the bin, a observe has discovered that the pass could backfire. Researchers found the recipients of ‘worth’ gifts had been as much as 27 per cent much less satisfied than expected. Many charities provide ‘socially accountable’ alternatives to standard presents including presenting a goat or bird to a villager in a growing us of a, or planting bushes in a conservation challenge. Researchers on the college of southern california asked 151 humans to either make a £25 donation to charity on behalf of a friend, or ship a connoisseur espresso bog down of the identical value. However the givers overestimated how appreciative buddies would be – and underrated how angry they could be. Recipients had been a whole lot less glad with the socially accountable presents than expected. And at the same time as givers expected their thoughtfulness to be rated at approximately seventy four consistent with cent, the true discern changed into forty eight in line with cent. Best mainly near pals are probable to understand a accountable gift, the authors stated. Dr lisa cavanaugh, writing in the magazine of organisational behaviour and human choice procedures, said: ‘socially accountable presents honestly have the capacity to mirror a virtuous identity for the giver. This very excellent, but, might not be valued by using recipients as tons as givers suppose.
‘a recipient might also perceive a present as saying extra approximately the giver than approximately the giver’s dedication to the relationship.’ two-hour queues to choose up m&s groceries
Tumblr media
angry marks & spencer shoppers confronted waits of up to two hours the day past after they arrived to collect pre-ordered turkeys. Many used social media to post photographs of lengthy queues each outside and inside stores. M&s seems to had been quick of manpower after it reduce returned on hiring seasonal body of workers this 12 months to keep money. Scott rose, who went to cheshunt in hertfordshire to pick up his meals, wrote on twitter: ‘2 hours to pick out up a turkey, received’t be back next yr m&s.’

Why offer a service you can not deliver?’ in beckenham, south-east london, queues almost reached the car park even as team of workers in handforth dean, cheshire, handed out mince pies to sad consumers. Other supermarkets have been mobbed yesterday. Waitrose stated tills were almost 4 times busier than an average wednesday. Sainsbury’s and tesco took on hundreds of greater team of workers to cope. Bluewater purchasing centre in kent stated it become trading ‘as standard’ after drivers faced waits of up to 6 hours to depart its car park on monday. Flaws of Avengers: Endgame
!!!!!!!S P O I L E R S!!!!!!!! (obviously)
Ok guys i am preety late to the party and all these are propably already said but i really need to get this off my chest, so beware my long bitching. Of course it was an overall really good movie, BUT as the 'end of an era' that it's supposed to be, i can't accept such blatant mistakes. I'll clarify.
Let's start with small... Plot holes, i guess:
1. Ok marvel i know you have not the slightest idea of your very own universe but please explain to me how every planet the characters visit has the exact correct composition of chemicals in its air to perfectly sustain human life and also the exact perfect gravity's acceleration for them to move on with no problem? And before y'all cringe and come for my life with 'nothing makes sense anyway, why tf do you even care about that?' i will have to argue that as long as they care enough to use physics theorems to somehow base the whole quantum nonsense, i think they should care about something so simple that even people with no physics education will find stupid.
2. Why did they need pim particles to go back in time when they could just use the time stone they had already retrieved? I honestly haven't thought of it during the movie but my brother pointed this out and honestly he was right. Ok...
3. If for Scott the time he spent in the quantum realm was 5 hours, which is in let's call it normal time 5 years, then exactly how was Steve missing for normal time a minute or so and he returned having lived at least 40 years? I mean nothing about the quantum realm makes any sense, and if it's not supposed to fine, but if you try to retionalise the irrational at least stick to the rules you yourself set, i don't know...
And now, moving on to what trully matters:
4. WHERE THE FUCK IS LOKI??? like really? They are telling me that one of the most beloved, if not the most beloved character can't be brought back to life or at least have some dialogue in his past form, but past Gamora who was later killed too (before the snap)can exist in a different timeline perfectly well with no repercussions? Really now?? so you're telling me that the russos were like 'oh loki the most loved character who had all the potential to contribute greatly to the plot? Yeah let's give him no significant role whatsoever, sure the fans will appreciate that'. I mean for fucks sake we see thor literally run outside his brother's cell, the brother he mourned, the last member of his family and he doesn't spare a single glance? And yes i know he was supposed to not interact with anyone but in the end we have that whole scene with his mother, which was of course impactfull and emotional, but let's be realistic; wouldn't it be thousand times better if the interaction was with Loki? Some funny/emotional dialogue to have thor move past his grief? Like his mother was great but she wasn't as important a character as loki and yet she gets so much more screentime than -i will repeat over and over- such a beloved and significant character as loki?
5. NATASHA'S DEATH. I will not even stick to the fact that dear nat who was constantly shat upon for 10 years, who didn't even get the chance to be her true badass self in infinity war, who is an original avengers' member and yet still hasn't got her own movie, was one of the two people to die. Let's somehow move past all this to the fact that SHE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. the whole battle with clint was beautiful and emotional and i love their bond but she died before the battle even began. Tony died too (let's not dwell on this pain), but saved the universe first. Everything before, during and after his death was epic. What did Natasha get in comparison? Not even a proper funeral as far as we know. Thanks a bunch Marvel.
6. Bruce banner. Ok cool that he was able to balance hulk and bunner but do we really have to him being hulk all the time? Isn't the very concept of hulk the 'i get angry i smash things'? I wanted to see banner the human being able to control banner the hulk, without them being constantly merged.
7. Why is thor so... I don't know... Disrespected? His pain induced condition is mostly treated as comedy relief and he doesn't get a single epic moment like in infinity war in the last movie we get to see him. Ok...
8. STEVE FUCKING ROGERS. Ok this was the finishing blow for me. He is one of my favourite characters. In all honesty, if he was done justice i propably wouldn't be here wasting whoever's is reading this time with my bitching. So beware level over 9000 bitching here.
- Him fighting with Thor's hammer was great and all till the point where it was practically implied that the captain we came to love can have no impact with just his power. If it's the last time we see him fight, i think his most crucial moment should have been him being 123% steve Rogers. Now most will remember him as 'the one who couldn't do anything against a thanos with no stones mind you if he didn't have the hammer'. And don't get me wrong, i know that the very fact that he even lifted it is proof of him being worthy but dude we been knew, you don't have to have him fight with it for most of the final battle. (One could even argue that he's in a way stealing Thor's spotlight)
- Why isn't he shown grieving? Of course the captain America wouldn't let his weakness show in public but on his own or to his friends i think we could have the slightest mention of bucky or sam. Everyone (apart from bruce but he didn't really lose anyone) is shown to grieve. Even carol who gets the minimum screentime is shown to grieve over fury. And before you argue about the therapy group we all know he mostly spat things he didn't believe himself for the sake of others. Ok... I don't know if I'm the one who is far-fetching this, or they did fail.
- The whole living the life he didn't get to. Ok... This is a controversial issue, I'd say. For me, i didn't really like it, but since it had to be done, i think they should have been more meticulous. I know they wanted captain out of the picture so they had to nullify him somehow. I also know that he only ever loved peggy (Who wouldn't love peggy carter?) But the way it was handled, gave me the impression that no other bond Steve has built after he was awaken and even bucky mattered enough for him not to come back old enough to barely be able to be a part of their lives. It made me feel that they were over-pushing the whole loving her thing, when it was according to previous captain America movies a thing of the past. It felt to me like everything that cap has gone through was instantly negated as if it never mattered, as if it was a mere mistake, as if he could never be happy unless he was with peggy. And they have crafted his bonds with others really good for this to seem true. I don't know how to explain it, but the pain cap has gone through has shapped who he is and negating all that as if they don't matter isn't it kinda destroying his character build up? I don't know anymore...
-But ok even if we stick to it being hella romantic, what are the consequences of that great a disturbance in time flow? Imagine the impact an alive captain whould have to everything. Or was he just a war hero and then settled down and nothing? What of Peggy's family that is implied in catws and in series agent carter? What of Bucky? Did he even care to save him from hydra's torturing that was happening then? And so on. (Shit ok even i think I'm expecting too much from them at this point.)
- JAMES BUCHANAN BARNES!!!!!! I don't know where to begin with this. Ok maybe they have forgotten what two out of three captain America movies were about? They must have. Because there is absolutely no other rational explanation as to why they fucked up this beautiful bond. The only dialogue we get is a repetition of a previous one? In what reality, whould bucky allow steve to go return the stones alone? Isn't he a man out of time too? Literally name a logical reason as to why bucky didn't even suggest to go with him. Isn't he the only one he cares about at this point? Why isn't he running to him when be comes back old but urges sam to? Like wtf? Why is steve not shown to react to him at any point when he literally broke the avengers apart for him? Why is their only interaction so emotionless compared to all other reunions? Why is marvel trying to sell their bond but gives it no attention? I DON'T UNDERSTAND! (Ok I'll just ignore canon again. I'm used to it.)
Anyway that's all i can think of right now. Propably omitting much more important issues too. All in all it was a really good movie. Tony/ steve interactions 11/10, epic final battle etc But to me those are much more crucial mistakes than the very ending should be allowed to have.
