it's nearly 5am. do u ever wonder about how class 1A first reacted to deku calling bkg "kacchan". like before they knew that the two had history. before they had a sliver of context though I imagine it just made things more confusing. just a teenage guy calling another teenage guy (who's incredibly rabid at the start of the series, entirely self absorbed, arrogant, and unapproachable) this adorable, childish pet name with very friendly, almost intimate connotations. and it's plain to see that they have the worst visible relationship known to man. there's nothing that sparks joy at the moment. this so-called "kacchan" is going to bite midoriya's head off but he doesn't tell midoriya to stop. like what the fuck. imagine being 1A. imagine being kirishima, day 1, hearing that for the first time. imagine what went through his head. this guy called bakugou what now? and he got away with it?

I know everyone already talked about this chapter and I'm like. So late but. May I bring your attention to t h i s:

Like, while this chapter has so, so MANY todobaku content that is a total blessing, I'd like to point out how this single one killed me totally??

Everything about Bakugou in the panel is gold. His expression, the teasing/bickering that seems really like he's JOKING W I T H Todoroki like "you're really realizing just N O W, I thought you'd be better than that" but told in a way that seems almost PLAYFUL in a Bakugou-kind-of-way. So, yeah. Everything about him in this panel is awesome.

Like I think you should know him very well to notice the small things and little changes in the natural envolving he's having in his relationship with Todoroki. Like, I genuinely think they're friends now and Bakugou knows that and is obviously acting more friendly/close with him but is really subtle. And I think is really ic because, while, y e s, Bakugou is actually very feral and wild and intense and just, everything he does stands out in a way or another, you'd kind of expect him to be abrasive about showing love/affection, but I think showing affection for someone he cares or loves or likes (and I don't even mean it in a romantic way, I'm talking about all his friendships here) is always done in a subtle way. He's never loud showing affection, he always does it in small things. I feel like you have to KNOW him p well to notice, but when you do, it hits.

Is the other way with Todoroki, in my opinion. Because, while Katsuki is vocal and loud and outstanding in things he does EXCEPT for showing affection, Shouto is blunt and straight-forward in EVERYTHING. He feels something, he thinks something: he says so, he acts on it, he does it. Yeah, he's emotional too, and yeah, he can be subtle and soft, but most of the time I feel like he's never hiding the things he wants to say or do? He's even described as "ill-mannered" by Horikoshi. He's blunt and never really cared about whether or not this or that is wrong to say, he just says as he thinks. He's always honest in a clumsy and maybe rough kind of way. He's always, more so lately, being HIMSELF. So here is the fact that really KILLS me:

His expression. He's kind of smirking/smiling, and TEASING. His whole expression just kind of blows me away. Because he's being playful and he N E V E R does that kind of expression with anyone??? But I feel like with Bakugou, he has always been teasing him and all, but you can clearly--at least to me--see the change in their bickering. Is subtle but is THERE. It feels like between people that do it constantly, that are familiar with each other, and how not? They've come a long way, and they've spent a lot of time together. There was never really animosity between them so I think spending a lot of time together actually really got them closer (whether Bakugou likes to admit it or not lol) and you can SEE IT. Todoroki's expression says it all.

I just see a lot of potential in they working together in the future. They've already done it a LOT of times and is established that they make a really good team. Is clearly shown in canon. And their dynamic is pretty amazing and well-constructed and natural?? I just feel like Todoroki acts so different towards him--or maybe not THAT different, but is obvious that is clearly different in the way he acts towards him respect everyone else: he never really was rude with him aside the bickering or ocasional teasing/sass, he said they got along p well, and then they have THESE kind of moments? Idk, is p obvious to me Shouto acts different towards him. Again, with Baku is more subtle but is obvious Todoroki is growing on him and he knows deep down they work well together.

So I don't know, I guess I'm just saying there's lot of potential to unpack there, and their dynamic is really interesting whether you ship them or not.

Anyway. Sorry for the rant that came out solely bc Todo's smirk and face got to me like right in the feels lol. YOU JUST CAN SEE HOW CLOSE THEY ARE, THEY LIKE THE TEASING, L O O K AT THEM. ;-;

Seeing how satisfied he was with his solution of dying with Sasuke, we could say that what truly terrified Naruto (back when he fainted) was not Sasuke dying per se, but actually the idea of Naruto himself living after Sasuke, of Naruto living in a world without Sasuke.

Thinking about Naruto clutching his chest and falling on the ground at the thought of Sasuke dying. The thought of Sasuke getting killed is unbearable for him, but the idea of dying with Sasuke seems like a relief. The realest love

What really gets me about Naruto is that Kishimoto sat down and he wrote a story about children being used as tools and being taught to give up their ideals and be willing to kill other people for the state even if those people were their friends or family. And this was explicitly shown to be an awful thing like he created a plotline where Sakumo refused to kill his friends and was bullied into suicide and had Kakashi realize that his father’s choice to not kill his friends was actually heroic and not something to be ashamed of or looked down on. And then he had Kakashi tell Team 7 that friends were more important than the rules and he stressed that Naruto’s continued loyalty to Sasuke despite him legally being considered a criminal was a good thing.

And he showed how Konoha came to be that way–like he showed Hashirama telling Madara that they would create a place where children wouldn’t have to kill each other and the entire narrative demonstrates that that’s not what Konoha became, in fact the context for that story being told was that Sasuke was confronting about Hashirama about how the conditions that allowed for the Uchiha massacre to happen were created, about how the village became a place where a child would kill their family. Kishimoto showed Madara telling Hashirama that he was leading the village in the wrong direction and that the Uchiha clan would not survive if Tobirama became the hokage and both of those things are shown to be completely true. Konoha as an experiment for creating a place without child soldiers where the Uchiha and Senju could coexist peacefully failed, that’s explicitly shown to be true.

And (intentionally or not on Kishimoto’s part) the narrative shows the cycle through which Konoha’s failed ideology is perpetuated throughout the generations–Hashirama goes from someone opposed to killing and war to someone who says he would kill his own family for Konoha. Kakashi goes from someone who learns the lesson of loyalty and friendship being more important than one’s orders to someone who is willing to essentially abandon Sasuke if he doesn’t simply get over the massacre of his clan, has killed huge numbers of people for Konoha and acts resigned to the current system. Even Itachi to some extent, as little sense as his storyline makes, supposedly starts out being opposed to war and senseless killing and then follows orders to kill his clan (although for some awful reason those aren’t framed as contradictory…). Even Naruto goes from someone who opposes the shinobi system to someone who blindly accepts it. The storyline is full of people initially opposing aspects of the current system and then lying to themselves about Konoha in its current state being something worth being loyal to despite the pain it has caused them and those around them, and then trying to convince or manipulate others into being loyal to it as well. Kakashi and Itachi do this to Sasuke, and Naruto does it to numerous people throughout the series. In the case of Itachi, his attempt at manipulating Sasuke is directly labeled as wrong.

Even the villains who actually do kill many people (unlike Sasuke) are shown to be products of the current system, being pushed to extremes by the suffering they experienced at the hands of the villages and the shinobi system and by the fact that their attempts at peacemaking were met with further violence (in the case of the Akatsuki).

So Kishimoto creates this intricate depiction of a fucked up system and the mechanisms by which it operates. And then he creates Sasuke, a character who is incredibly honest despite being repeatedly lied to, who respects people’s autonomy and doesn’t manipulate them into serving his purposes (like with Team Taka) despite being manipulated and objectified by others, who refuses to kill innocent people initially despite being expected to, who is motivated by love and loyalty, who sees the inherent cruelty of the current system and seeks to learn about its roots so he can change it, who refuses to ignore his own anger and suffering and blindly support Konoha—he creates this character who breaks out of that cycle and opposes the system that the entire series has shown to be terrible. AND THEN HE PORTRAYS HIM AS A VILLAIN

sometimes i think about how naruto believed for the longest time that power and authority are the only ways (for him) to be acknowledged, because he'd never been taught anything else. and then i think about how sasuke, someone whom naruto viewed as having all the talent and acknowledgement in the world, sacrificed himself for naruto, way back in the land of waves arc. and naruto wondered why, why would you do that for me, and sasuke answered, "my body moved on its own." i think that this moment had a lot of potential to deeply destabilize naruto's worldview. if the popular prodigy cares so deeply, so dearly, for the lonely loser that his sacrifice was just plain instinct, then what does that say about naruto's belief that he could only receive acknowledgement (read: affection) by fighting for it? what does that say about konoha, if sasuke loves naruto when they couldnt?

tl;dr canon naruto deserves to hate konoha, and he and sasuke shouldve been murder husbands working to revolutionize the shinobi world

i guess part of what bothers me about naruto and sasuke becoming hokage/shadow hokage is that it really plays into the concept that idealistic youth will eventually grow into conservative adults who abandon their dreams of a better and more equitable world in favor of more ‘sensible’ principals. like as a genin naruto spurns the idea that shinobi should be just weapons of violence and insists that he’ll embrace his own creed that uplifts the vulnerable and protects those he loves. sasuke scorns konoha’s cruel treatment of those it considers outsiders and expresses his desire to abolish the bloodthirsty system that induced his family’s mass execution. and they were absolutely right, even if their visions were treated as irrational. it’s so disheartening to see characters who once stood so strongly by their morals simply abandon them in order to continue contributing to the cycles of violence that robbed them of their families and innocence, alienated them as children, and forced them to watch their friends die needlessly before they ever reached adulthood. ideals of justice, equity, and compassion shouldn’t be seen as things that ought to be grown out of in order to achieve status as community leaders—in fact, it’s quite the opposite and i think sasuke and naruto would agree!!
